    Jefferson Davis dies
    December 06, 1889
On this day in 1889, Jefferson Davis, former president of the Confederate States of America, died in New Orleans. Davis, born in Kentucky in 1808 but later a senator from Mississippi, was first in Texas as an army officer during the Mexican War in 1847 with Zachary Taylor’s force on the Rio Grande. In 1854, while Davis was United States secretary of war, he recommended the Texas or thirty-second-parallel route for construction of a railroad to the Pacific Ocean, and in 1856 he sent camels to Camp Verde to test the animals’ suitability as military transportation. After Reconstruction a movement was launched in Dallas to purchase a homestead for Davis and invite him to move to Texas. In 1875 he was offered the presidency of the newly established Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas. In declining the appointment, he wrote of his hopes of revisiting Texas, but he never did so.

    Stupid, Dangerous Republicans

Congressman Burton used this hearing to rehash a series of some of the most thoroughly discredited anti-vaccine positions of the past decade. Burton is a firm believer in the myth that vaccines cause autism, and he arrogantly holds the position that he knows the truth better than the thousands of scientists who have spent much of the past decade doing real science that proves him wrong.

    and,

    Burton:

“It wasn’t so bad when a child gets one or two or three vaccines… Mercury accumulates in the brain until it has to be chelated.”

Bang bang, two false claims in 10 seconds. First he claims that mercury from vaccines “accumulates in the brain”, a statement with no scientific support at all. Then he claims that chelation therapy is the solution – a radical, potentially very harmful treatment that no sensible parent would ever force on their child. Unfortunately, some quack doctors have experimented with chelation therapy on autistic children, despite that fact that it can cause deadly liver and kidney damage, and one of them caused the death of a 5-year-old boy in 2005.

Hamous’ old home district representative, Republican Bill Posey of Florida, wandered off into the pseudo-scientific tall weeds with:

Congressman Bill Posey from Florida was just as bad as Burton, demanding a study of vaccinated versus unvaccinated children, a standard talking point of the anti-vax movement. (Congressman Posey: do you even realize that your question is almost identical to what Jenny McCarthy asked five years ago, on the Larry King Live show?)

These men are dangerous fools and need to be sent home.

    A MESSAGE TO MY LISTENERS
    Posted by Laura
After more than 9 years with the distributor Talk Radio Network, I decided it was time to move on. After much thought and reflection, I have decided to pursue my first loves–modern dance and the xylophone. In the highly unlikely event that these efforts do not prove fruitful, I intend to return to radio.
Seriously–to the more than 300 stations that carry the Laura Ingraham Show and to all my loyal listeners, I feel the time is right to expand and retool my radio program and to explore other syndication options, which I am now actively pursuing. During this brief hiatus, my team and I will continue to deliver thought-provoking and entertaining analysis via my website lauraingraham.com and twitter @IngrahamAngle. And of course, I’ll be doing my regular appearances on Fox News. I anticipate making an announcement concerning the show in the near future. Stay tuned!

Yanno it is a little thing, but I resent KSEV saying that Laura is on vacation on one hand and then saying the listeners were clamoring for a daytime version of Mr. Savage so KSEV put Savage in her slot. What is wrong with simply telling the truth?

Excellent commentary by G. Murphy Donovan at American Thinker:

The David Petraeus saga is another urban legend; a myth about a great man felled by a single flaw or indiscretion. The truth is that Petraeus is a bit player in a larger, uglier drama, the political corruption the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) and that exclusive four star glut that sits atop the military. And the rot didn’t start with Petraeus.
Recall Army Chief-of-Staff George Casey taking to the airways to rationalize the Fort Hood Islamist massacre in 2009. Somehow “diversity” and Muslim sensitivities were more important than twin dangers of domestic sedition or troop safety on American bases. Casey was thrown at the Sunday chat shows, like the more recent Susan Rice mendacity tour, to spin a politically correct message.

  22. Tedtam Avatar

Yeah, I pointed out this notice last Monday, after I noticed that Mike Savage was in her slot. KSEV is saying “Laura is out this week,” not saying she’s on vacation (not that I’ve noticed), but I can see where the implication can be drawn.
I think this was the same radio network that Savage left, also.

Maybe it’s just that time of the month or something, but I yearn for the good old days when there was occasional discussion of substantive issues here. Or maybe things haven’t changed here at all and I’ve just gotten a lot smarter, but that’s not very likely, or maybe everyone has just given up all hope. I hate to admit it, but I just about have. Even the U.S. Energy Department no longer deems America’s benchmark oil grade as the best guide to global prices, as rising production swells national stockpiles.
The Energy Information Administration in Washington dispensed with West Texas Intermediate for its price forecasts in its Annual Energy Outlook 2013 released yesterday, adopting North Sea Brent crude instead. It’s the first time the department has used Brent, reflecting “a growing discrepancy” between WTI and global crude prices, it said.

Another Stupid Republican or Why We Need to Get the Federal Government Out of Education Totally

Student Loan debt in the U.S. recently crossed the $1 trillion mark, with a good chunk of that owed to the U.S. government. In an attempt to streamline the whole process, a soon-to-be-introduced bill would replace the current system of debt collection with automatic payroll deductions tied to the borrower’s income.
Similar systems are already in place in the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand, and Wisconsin Representative Tom Petri plans to introduce the idea to Congress as soon as this week, reports Bloomberg.
Rather than paying huge fees to third-party bill collectors, the government would debit borrowers’ paychecks at an amount capped at 15% of income after basic living expenses.

I don’t think I’ve given up hope so much as resigned myself to the inevitable outcome. There may have been a slim chance of recovery before November 6, but now it’s clear that the American people like big government.
So here’s what I think we should encourage our Republican congressional delegation to do:
    1. Make it abundantly clear that they believe Obamanomics will bankrupt the country. Proclaim it from every hill that this is the wrong way to go.
    2. Accept the fact that Bronco and the “progressives” won the election and acknowledge their “mandate” to govern.
    3. Enter into the congressional record their objections and then vote affirmative on every piece of spending and taxing legislation Bronco and the Dems put forward. Every single one. Give them exactly what they want.
Let’s drink our bottle of castor oil and puke this mess out so the grown-ups can take over and clean it up after the apocalypse.

    Is chocolate the new Viagra?

A mug of hot chocolate before bed is not usually seen as a prelude to an evening of whirlwind passion.
That may be about to change with the introduction of a ‘turbo-charged’ type of chocolate said to have Viagra-like properties.
The world’s largest chocolate-maker has developed a technique to concentrate levels of key plant chemicals called flavanols.
These are found in cocoa beans but are normally stripped out in the chocolate-making process.
Swiss-based chocolate giant Barry Callebaut is said to be just weeks away from getting the go-ahead from the EU to claim the ‘turbo-charged’ chocolate boosts health by increasing blood flow.

Timothy P. Carney at the Washington Examiner:

Illegally downloading a couple dozen songs can earn you a million-dollar fine. Setting some Robert Frost verses to music can make you a criminal. Software or hardware that could possibly be used to copy DVDs — illegal. And thanks to congressional action every couple of decades, Disney still holds a copyright over Mickey Mouse, whom Walt first created nearly a century ago.
The law and law enforcement around copyright has moved far beyond its purpose of promoting arts and sciences and has become a textbook case of collusion between big business and big government.

    and,

This paper upset some powerful interests. By Saturday afternoon, the RSC had pulled the memo from its website and officially retracted it. The reason, according to two Republicans within the RSC: angry objections from Rep. Marsha Blackburn, whose district abuts Nashville, Tenn. In winning a fifth term earlier in the month, Blackburn received more money from the music industry than any other Republican congressional candidate, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Blackburn’s office did not return calls seeking comment.
Lobbyists for the music and movie industries also called the RSC to express disapproval, according to Republicans involved.
The staffer who wrote the memo, an ambitious 24-year-old named Derek Khanna, was fired — even before the RSC had decided on other staffing changes for the upcoming Congress. The copyright memo was a main reason.

Randy Barnett, prominent law professor and scholar, posted this at the Volokh Conspiracy:

I have worked with Khanna (profiled here), who is also an evening student at Georgetown Law, and found him to be a very bright, principled and committed individual who did not deserve this fate. Here’s hoping he lands at an outfit that can make full use of his considerable talents and initiative.

    I’ll re-enter the fray for a moment.
I hate to say I told you so about BonerCO but I told you so. Unlike a financial prospectus, a politicians past performance is reflective of future returns. So what happens is the “old status quo” guys are exacting revenge on Tea Party candidates cause these guys are rocking the boat.
So my question to no one in particular whatcha doin to hold Boehner’s feet to the fire? Watcha doin to the rest of the entrenched “status quo” to hold their feet to the fire? I’ll end my snark here and now. I have done my time in the trenches and I ain’t talkin about participating in blogs either. Just like Hamous, I am gonna enjoy life till it is time to clean up after the inevitable. This country I live in now is not the country I spent time in the service for. Fortunately i do not depend on the gubment for my happiness and substance. I do not even depend on myself. If it is God’s will, only he can turn this sinking ship around.

Earlier this week, House Speaker John Boehner led the Republican leadership in stripping four outspoken conservative members — Justin Amash (R-MI), Tim Huelskamp (R-KS), David Schweikert (R-AZ), and Walter Jones (R-NC) — of their coveted positions on the House Budget and Banking Committees.

First District Rep. Tim Huelskamp says he has only limited answers for what he calls a “vindictive and petty” move by House leadership to remove him from key congressional committees.
U.S. Congressman Tim Huelskamp (R) from Fowler explained on Wednesday why he is getting the boot by leaders like John Boehner. The Kansan is now off two key committees, including the Agriculture Committee.
And apparently the reason for doing so is they have created a targeted vote list,” said Huelskamp Wednesday. “And if you didn’t vote with them a certain amount of times they’re going to punish you and there was four of us they decided to punish. And there’s been additional discussion this morning (Wednesday) from the Speaker of the U.S. House indicating he might do the same to other folks if they don’t get in line in the future.”

If a certain someone was still here he just may like this approach. Just remember, getting Prop 8 passed was all about fear mongering…(yeah, right).

Leaders of the Mormon Church launched a new website on Thursday which, despite saying the church is still opposed to same-sex marriage, encourages churchgoers to be more compassionate in discussions over homosexuality.
Officials from the church insisted that it had not changed its stance that marriage can only be between a man and a woman, and that being gay is still a sin, reports the Washington Post.
The website, however, goes on to appeal to gay and lesbian Mormons not to leave the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
    (snip)
“Reconciling same-sex attraction with a religious life can present an especially trying dilemma,” reads the website, written by leaders of the church. “Anyone who lives in both worlds can attest to its difficulty. But with faith, love and perspective, it can be done.”
