Weekend Baby Open Comments

(PS: This is NOT Darren’s baby, though I’m sure his is just as cute.)

Darren gave us the great news last night:

Around 9:30 Aedhun Rean Zechiel was born. 7 lb 14 oz and 21 1/2 inches long. All seems well. Thank you all for thoughts and prayers.

I think we’re all very happy that everyone made it through the pregnancy and the delivery okay.

Some pics are on Facebook and when I can I’ll get my unsavy tech self to post them on my website and link them here.

We’re holding you to that, Darren!

I haven’t been up this early in a while. Why, less than 10 years ago, I would be arriving for work in Sugarland at 7 a.m., after a 25 mi commute. We’re approaching the time of year when the moon would still be shining bright when I left for work. It was nice for the couple of weeks when I would reach the massive concrete highway overpasses at Beltway 8 over the Southwest Freeway at around dawn. All that pale concrete would take on a rosy glow and look too pretty to just be roadway supports.

New Jersey has asked that folks refrain from frowning on their drivers licenses. It honks up the facial recognition software.

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission has cracked down on drivers smiling in their driver’s license photos because their smiles could interfere with new facial recognition software.

Another government agency charged with the public good, unclear on the concept of normal business practices.

A new local police order will force prostitutes working day and night behind Amsterdam-style, neon-flashing windows, a feature of the trade across north-eastern mainland Europe, to cover up and quit sexually-charged posing before passers-by.

I suggest the interested parties get together and hash out a treaty.

I thought it is illegal to solicit donations, proselytize, or conduct commerce in roadways, particularly State ones (FM, SH, etc.).
Some wino selling papers out in the middle of FM529 just about caused a wreck between him out in the road and the idiots buying a paper. If the dude wants to get hisself killed, who am I to stop him? My problem is that he’s causing a hazard for others.

TT alluded to this condition a couple of years ago, ie that there needs to be X amount of water flowing through the sewer lines in order for them to be able to carry away that which is flushed. In Zimbabwe they have been in drought conditions and have experienced water outages over the last several days. The solution to the now-clogged sewer lines is a city-wide synchronized flush.

I just returned from a trip to the farmer’s market on Airline. I walked into Canino’s and was disappointed, as the prices weren’t as great as the hype. It’s been quite a while since I was there, and I forgot about the vendors in the back. I bought some stuff at Canino’s and pushed my basket through the doorway into the warm and crowded “other side”.
I snagged two buckets of rosemary plants, two plants each. The plants are at least about 18″ high. Price $6.00 each container. (One will be a gift for friends.)
Colored bell peppers (I love) for 50 cents each. Normally, they retail at twice that. Lovely’s favorite “momma dish” is my bell peppers & onions with sausage, over rice.
A big bag of oranges for $5.00.
Almost got mangoes, but I think I can get them at a better price with some price flyer matching. They had some big ‘uns, though. I probably should have gotten them.
But then, I got a ripe pineapple for a buck, and a watermelon at an okay price $3.00. With the bananas and plums, I got plenty of fruit for a while.
Before I went there, I went to Southwest Supply (surplus furniture liquidators) for a bed frame for our king size bed. It’s been sitting on the floor for years, which, given it’s current position in relationship to the dome roof, is probably a good thing. Hubby however, decided he wanted a frame. The cheapest I could find was online at $45, before shipping. I remembered this liquidation place and drove up there. I found their showroom, with all the brand new, pretty stuff in the air conditioned show room. I asked for the frame, and I was quoted $69. I wandered around, looking at their inventory and calling Steve. He said to just come home and order it online, we weren’t in that big a hurry. On the way out, I asked the sales lady if she could match the $45 price. She refused, but said if I drove around to the baaaaack, and go inside the warehouse, they might be able to help me there. I drove around, found the warehouse, and they guy popped up and offered to sell one for $20. While his helper retrieved the frame, I wandered around. Wall to wall, floor to ceiling in the back, there were tables, chairs, armoires, drawers, sofas, and other stuff lined up cheek to cheek, so to speak. This was obviously not the “new stuff” they were selling in the front showroom. Some of the pieces were pretty good, almost new shape, while others would be refinishing projects.
They had commercial kitchen equipment that had just been yanked out of a restaurant (needed cleaning, but in working condition). He said they had the commercial mixers and stuff from a bakery one time, and that they were doing more business with Landry’s, so there’d be more commercial baking equipment, and just check in from time to time to see what they had. I thought of the bakery Lovely wants to have someday, so I called her. I’m sure she thought I was cute, and told me she’d “keep it in mind”. Yeah, well, wait until the time comes and she starts pricing brand new equipment.
They had lamps and dishes and all sorts of small items – a whole array of coffee makers (Cuisinart, I’m assuming out of hotel rooms). The coffee makers were $5.00 each. There were some large mirrors, but I don’t know the price on them. They had four working refrigerator/freezers for $199 each.
So, all in all, a rather profitable day, in a frugal sort of way. I saved about $40+ on the bed frame, and managed to get some deals on veggies and fruit. So now, I gotta figure out what I’m cooking for dinner.

My dear, after all that walking around bargain hunting today plus the successful purchases hauled home, you must be tired. How’s about hubby taking you out for supper? 🙂

  28. Tedtam Avatar

Hubby’s been working on some electrical stuff here, getting ready for our next inspection. He’s whupped – moving some of the outlets were not easy. His back is hurting, and he’s going to one of our rental units to investigate a probable water leak.
I told him I was feeling a little sick to my stomach as I left the farmer’s market, wondering if he’d be home to help me unload the car. He told me what he had to do, and I told him to go ahead and do what he needed to do, that I’d manage. He was still home when I got here, and hauled in the heavier items for me.
I’ll be cooking dinner for him.

In 2010, juvenile homicide (<17 years old) was the lowest since 1980. Generally speaking it goes up during Republican Administrations and down during Progressive.

Amazing how things can work out well unexpectedly. Late Tuesday afternoon we received a check for the current retail value of the now-crunched Lucerne (Lucy 1.0) from State Farm, I deposited the check Wednesday morning, and Thursday morning the bank said the funds were available. Thursday evening an ad in the Fort Bend Herald by the Hyundai dealer in Rosenberg featured a 2009 Lucerne Special Edition with only 27,642 miles on. Wow.
Spouse read the ad Friday morning after I mentioned it and started hunting online, found the CARFAX report on it and the other Lucerne the dealer had (2008 with much higher mileage). Went to see it early Friday afternoon and drove it around several miles on the usual roads the dealers in that area use for test rides, then bought it with minimal dickering. It could be Lucy 1.0’s twin (same color and interior) but with extras that did not show in the pictures. It looks practically brand new with only a few very minor blemishes, and it has some bumper-bumper warranty left as well as the longer power train warranty.
The Hyundai dealer bought it at auction, it had one owner, and we are wondering if it was part of that person’s estate. No way to tell. It cost more than the insurance claim payment of course, but not significanlty more. 🙂 Maybe Santa came early this year.
Buick dealers in the area would fist fight to have it in their lot, for they have few recent models of any Buicks available. This likely explains the sight-unseen unsolicited by mail offers we’ve had on Lucy 1.0 and Lucy 2 (2010). Wonder how much of this is the result of Cash For Clunkers wiping out many perfectly usable cars of all makes.

It looks like the NHL is locking out the players again. I used to watch the Flames games, looks like not this season.

Despite the N.H.L.’s record financial growth in recent years, which reached $3.3 billion in revenue last season, the dispute centers on the owners’ wish to reduce the amount they pay the players. Under the expiring contract, players received 57 percent of revenue. The owners’ latest offer would leave them with 47 percent at the end of a six-year agreement, the equivalent of a 17.5 percent pay cut. The players have offered to accept roughly 53 percent.

The Lord bless you, your wife, and any children still living at home. This situation can be a difficult row to hoe, much depending on the nature of the medical situation. But you already know that. Been there with both parents in decline in their apartment nearby. My widowed Mom lived with us after living alone was impossible, until there was an opening for long-term care in the rehab section of the hospital in Richmond. That was the best of all possible situations for her and for us. She passed away in 2001.
Fellow Hamsters have encountered similar difficult circumstances. Maybe some of us can offer support enlightened by our experiences. 🙂

    There’s always hope.
My resident manic/depressive addict stepdaughter seems to have turned her life around for the first time in fifteen or more years.
Year before last she embarked on a major change in her nursing career. Kidney dialysis is a highly specialized, complex specialty. But she ended up working for a couple of psychotic bitches with Napoleon-type complexes. They forced her out. Inherently vulnerable and unstable in these situations, we just knew she was headed back into a multi-year, extended blue funk, but she worked her way through it. Then her ex boyfriend committed suicide. Amazingly, she held up quite well.
Now, she’s been hired to work her specialty in hospital/critical care settings – pretty much the elite position in her field, working solo in ICU’s and critical rehabs.
She even has a little swagger, now.
    We’re cautiously optimistic.
We’ll keep you and yours in our prayers, GJT.

Cell and aircards operate on 2 different frequencies. That being said they also are limited to the power output the signal is sent at. Oblivious the aircard is less and might need a “booster” to help pick it up for that ravine you have elected to reside yourself in.

I’m with hammy – lose the air card & tether your computer to your iPhone. I did that with my work phone (Windows 🙁 ) in Yerp. Worked great. They told me I had unlimited data. I didn’t.
Someone quick calculate how much my bill almost was… 5GB (3GB over) @ $9.50/MB.
I do have unlimited global data as long as there’s no tethering involved.

Short answer – Maybe, maybe not.
From what our guys over here at the meatball have mentioned , when tethered to the cell it presents a whole set of other problems one being ya can’t take/get calls while puting. An ya know me and my yob, gotta be on BOTH the puter and phone at the same time so tethered cell ain’t in my vocabulary or tool bag. Kinda like the grass ain’t greener on the other side of the fence necessarily. But one has to look at the pros & cons and decide what one wishes to live with.

If one truly believes the specious argument that there is a causative link between the political party holding the White House and the behaviors described, then it’s clear what party shouldn’t be near the Oval Office if one seriously wants murders committed by juveniles or suicides to decrease. BTW, Hammie, I was in your hood today. Fundraiser up on Irvington, then I rode through the city down Irvington, then Fulton. Lots of activity – looks like the Fulton projects have been cleaned up a bit.

    Count me as one.
Although I never planned on watching 60min. Haven’t watched Isvestia on channel 11 for 15 years at least.

Your entry was certainly no worse than my #3 in the weekend WAF. It’s blank, because it was a post intended for the OC thread, and I had to delete it from the WAF. Can you spell chagrin? 😳

Let me ask the sane among us: has Roe v. Wade been reversed or rendered void during Republican administrations?

They’ve been cleaned up, like they do every 20 years or so, but still a lot of crime. Same old story. If you’re perpetually dependent on government you will not succeed. Projects can never succeed. Unless you have the responsibility of home ownership you have no stake in the game.
The only reason they cleaned them up this time is to make the Toy Train look good.

Yeah, the Toy Train is a disaster on that route and on the east side. Harrisburg will forever be changed. Rode through both of them today.
Agree about the Fulton projects, I’ve seen them cleaned before and they always fall back to crime and chaos. Liberalism does that, seeks the lowest common denominator.

Lovely called me earlier to tell me that one of her best friend’s wedding has been postponed indefinitely, and that this very beautiful young lady may be permanently breaking up with her intended.
I promised to keep my end zone celebration dance private.
The intended is a controlling, self-absorbed, insensitive, stingy jerk. All of us have had our turns trying to discourage this engagement. I don’t know what happened, I’m just glad it did.
When she gets over this hopefully permanent break-up, I’m sure Lovely & Co. will be lining up eligible young men for her to date. She’s had guys interested in her, really good prospects, but continued her relationship with the CSAISJ. She could have any guy she wants, but she doesn’t seem to understand that fact.
I’m keeping her in my prayers, that her future continues to improve in outlook.

I’ll ride the train…if they ever finish it. Five years of disruption now. At least two more years to go. But I will ride it downtown. One of the stations is at the end of my street, about a 1/4 mile walk.

Did Metro ever start collecting train tickets? I remember they didn’t when the first one rolled up and down Main St because they wanted it to look as full & utilized as possible.

It’s good seeing folks having fun while campaigning.

Captured on video, this is the moment the Second Lady lost her cool at a New Hampshire campaign event, giggling like a schoolgirl as the crowd roared with delight.
Passionately describing Mr Biden’s work ethic she began: ‘I’ve seen Joe up close,’ making a wide motion with her hands, before blushing as she realised the innuendo she had just made. ….
    It didn’t stop there, however.
Having planted the seed, every sentence seemed laden with sexual reference, so much so that Mrs Biden was barely able to continue as spectators fell apart were uncontrollable laughter.
