I ran across this picture recently. Guess who the dude next to Col. Sanders is?
This immediately conjured up memories of this one:
Can you guess who these people might be?
Lots more here.

A slow start for the future of Texas.First producing oil well in Texas comes in
September 12, 1866
On this day in 1866, the first producing oil well in Texas came in at a depth of 106 feet at Oil Springs in Nacogdoches County. The Melrose Petroleum Oil Company, which had been organized in December 1865 by Lyne Taliaferro (Tol) Barret and four partners, began drilling in the summer of 1866. Taliaferro, a Nacogdoches County merchant born in Virginia in 1832, had first contracted to lease 279 acres near Oil Springs in 1859, but the Civil War put a temporary halt to his exploration. The first well produced about ten barrels a day, but the low price of oil and the political unrest accompanying Reconstruction made the development of the field unfeasible. Barret suffered extensive financial losses and returned to the mercantile business in Melrose. Later he saw the field developed with an oil boom in 1887. Barret died in 1913. Though he received little acclaim during his lifetime, in 1966 memorial markers were dedicated at his grave in Melrose and at Stephen F. Austin State University to mark the 100th anniversary of the drilling of the first producing oil well in Texas. -

Early colony holds first election
September 12, 1844
On this day in 1844, just nine days after reaching their new settlement, Henri Castro, empresario of the Republic of Texas, and his first thirty-five colonists held an election to choose two justices of the peace, a constable, and the settlement’s name, Castroville. Henri Castro, a learned, wise, and humane man, received contracts for two grants of land on which he was to establish 600 families. In the management of his colonies, he is more comparable to Stephen F. Austin than any other Texas empresario. He had an unbounded faith in the capacity of intelligent men for self-government. During Castro’s colony’s first year the population grew to 2,134. Although the colony suffered from Indian depredations, cholera, and the drought of 1848, the population increased sufficiently for the formation of Medina County in 1848. -

Seems like Obama is “too busy” to see him, but he still has time to smooze with Letterman………..Obama Announces Letterman Appearance on Day He Snubbed Netanyahu
by Christian Toto 11 Sep 2012
President Barack Obama will be visiting one of his biggest fans soon – late night talker David Letterman.
The president will chat with the “Late Show” host during a trip to New York City next week, according to the National Journal. Letterman’s nightly monologues mostly spare the president from satirical ribbing, saving his most cutting remarks for the Romneys … or even former President George W. Bush.
The news comes on the same day Obama told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu he couldn’t meet with him due to a scheduling conflict.While this is going on.

Russian ships displayed at DNC tribute to vets
By Sam Fellman – Staff writer
Posted: Tuesday Sep 11, 2012 17:16:10 EDT
Retired Adm. John Nathman speaks on stage with military veterans during the final day of the Democratic National Convention on Sept. 6 in Charlotte, N.C. Experts say the ships in the background are Russian.
On the last night of the Democratic National Convention, a retired Navy four-star took the stage to pay tribute to veterans. Behind him, on a giant screen, the image of four hulking warships reinforced his patriotic message.
But there was a big mistake in the stirring backdrop: those are Russian warships.
While retired Adm. John Nathman, a former commander of Fleet Forces Command, honored vets as Americaβs best, the ships from the Russian Federation Navy were arrayed like sentinels on the big screen above.
These were the very Soviet-era combatants that Nathman and Cold Warriors like him had once squared off against.
βThe ships are definitely Russian,β said noted naval author Norman Polmar after reviewing hi-resolution photos from the event. βThereβs no question of that in my mind.β
Naval experts concluded the background was a photo composite of Russian ships that were overflown by what appear to be U.S. trainer jets. It remains unclear how or why the Democratic Party used whatβs believed to be images of the Russian Black Sea Fleet at their convention.
A spokesman for the Democratic National Convention Committee was not able to immediately comment Tuesday, saying he had to track down personnel to find out what had happened.
The veteran who spotted the error and notified Navy Times said he was immediately taken aback.
βI was kind of in shock,β said Rob Barker, 38, a former electronics warfare technician who left the Navy in 2006. Having learned to visually identify foreign ships by their radars, Barker recognized the closest ship as the Kara-class cruiser Kerch. βAn immediate apology [from the committee] would be very nice,β Barker said. βMaybe acknowledge the fact that yes, they screwed up.β -
It looks like this explains why our diplomats were over run.
In Benghazi, a large mob stormed the U.S. consulate, with gunmen firing their weapons, said Wanis al-Sharef, an Interior Ministry official in Benghazi. A witness said attackers fired automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades at the consulate as they clashed with Libyans hired to guard the facility.
Outnumbered by the crowd, Libyan security forces did little to stop them, al-Sharef said. -

Not so good morning Hamsters. Yesterday’s events in the Arab world that get a pass from Obama and his minions plus the memory of 9-11 throw a shroud over America today. Yea for Mitt Romney’s most appropriate comments. Mitt and Paul need to continue standing up for America with all they’ve got while Obama cowers somewhere and sends minions to make lame apologies and statements. Disgust doesn’t begin to describe it. However that will have to do for the moment. π

Will the events of yesterday cause the LSM to remove their O colored glasses and start reporting the truth instead of openly campaigning for JugEars? Will the Spitter and the rest on his channel stop humping O’s leg? Will the events of yesterday cause the VMG to wake the hell up and realize that we have the well tanned reincarnation of the Jimmah Cawtah presidency but only 10 time worse and vote ABO/RMoney in the next election?
We all know that the polls are skewed in the sample, we all know that the “educational” system K-12 and university, has been indoctrinating students in hard left ideology to the detriment of actual learning; how much of this indoctrination is getting blown out of the water by the events of yesterday? -

Not too friggen likely as it was the locals who perpetrated the act o war.
What a stunning Foreign Policy achievement, eliminate the one force that is keeping the radical islimists in check (qadaffi) and somehow one is then surprised that the islimists start behaving like the murderous, blood thirsty savages they have always been.
Ditto that for Egypt and soon Syria. -
And the best our president can come up with is that he condemns the actions?
He verbally condemns the actions for the consumption of the American press, on back channels he confirms that he will do nothing to punish this action or make any changes to stop future such actions.
Obama is neither powerful nor brilliant; he is a sock puppet for those who wish to destroy the USA so they personally can achieve more power and (cue twisted maniacal voice)RULE THE WORLD -

I understand two of the dead in Benghazi were Marine Embassy Guards.
Did they do enough to stop the attack this time? -
I wonder where they got this idea?
But, Occupy was such a good idea. -
One of the young ladies from my church is a missionary in Libya. She just got there a few days ago and due to lost luggage had to go to the airport yesterday to pickup her luggage. She was able to share her faith with the hotel worker that drove her and he seemed very responsive. Her group is stuck in a hotel, by suggestion of the US Embassy, and not able to move about freely. Please pray for her and her group, they will be looking for apartments to live in once they are allowed out of the hotel and then beginning their ministry in earnest.

They have more courage than I do. While I’d love to travel to the Middle East and see the ancient sites, I am too chicken to put my life on the line like that. I’ve shared my story before, of the coworker from Iran who was not Muslim. Nope, my life is worth something, despite what the radical Islamists say. My missionary work is here, among the teenagers in my church. Some of them are about as unchurched as those Muslims in Libya, unfortunately. They are just missing the hate.
I will keep them, and all missionaries, in my prayers. -
I can’t get to this link from here, but I ran across it last night. Hope it’s the one I’m thinking of…

Did they do enough to stop the attack this time?
More than they should have been expected to with less of what they should have had.
-
I have a missionary cousin who’s been in Kenya for about six months. Recently, someone hacked their email accounts and started sending out extremely threatening letters to everyone in their address books detailing how they will be tortured and killed. Needless to say the family (we all received the email) is very concerned with their safety.
Every time I hear some deranged Muslim claim “martyrdom” for blowing up himself and hundreds of innocents I have a hard time living up to my Christian calling. -
Statement released by the US Embassy in Cairo:
The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims — as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others. [emphasis mine]
Maybe the Muslims need to put on their big-girl panties and butch up.
-
So — Cairo Embassy does not condemn the killing of 4 Americans in Libya. Just condemn bad-mouthing of Islime.
-
In reply, the White House issued this statement:
“We are shocked, that, at a time when the United States of America is confronting the tragic death of one of our diplomatic officers in Libya, Governor Romney would choose to launch a political attack.”
The Muslims are not the only ones who need to find some big-girl panties.

I’m a big girl, and I’m sure I have a few extra I can send. Perhaps we should start a “Panties for Obama” mail-in?

Let’s recap:
Obama starts his “foreign policy” efforts off by apologizing in Cairo
Turns his back on Mubarek without having thought about consequences and what our next steps should be
Actively supports airstrikes in support of rebel factions in Libya to depose Big Mo – despite Big Mo having been more than a little bit cooperative since Saddam Hussein got whacked without having thought about consequences and what our next steps should be
Obama refuses to meet with Netanyahu in the near future while he is visiting on UN business
Obama announces he will be appearing on Letterman
Happens on 9/11 (while ” the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy.”)
Relatively small mobs, not widespread protests
Embassies/Consulates sacked & burned
US Citizens murdered (at least two of whom had diplomatic cover)
Proximate cause was (by most accounts & reviews) a really stupid and bad movie that “denigrated” the pederast prophet, Mohammed
Embassy in Cairo issues statement saying that we are sorry that some guy had to go and hurt the feelings of the Muslim nuts and force them to sack our Embassy & Consulate
Romney issues statement and holds press conference in which he strongly criticizes both the Muslim nuts and our spineless President
Obama issues statement criticizing Romney for criticizing him

There’s always been “something not quite right” about the crazy aunt anyway – I mean besides the whole shovel thing. -
The Administration said the “death pictures” were actually Libyans dragging the ambassador to the hospital. From what I’ve seen of these animals, they usually pull out the cell phones when they have a trophy, not a victim.

We shouldn’t hurt the feelings of Muslims in other countries, but in this country if a Catholic University doesn’t want to pay for abortifacients and contraceptives, they are hatefully ignorant and just trying to take away a woman’s right to control her own body.

I don’t claim to have any foreign policy experience, nor do I have any expertise in the Middle East, its politics, its religion, and the like. I do not have a secret plan that would serve our country and supplement its middle east policies (assuming it has some). Yet I would submit that I could put something together in fairly short order that would be better than what our current administration has. Any takers?

You’re on if you watched Lawrence of Arabia and read T E Lawrence’s
Seven Pillars of Wisdom. That would be way ahead of Obama. And not a whole lot has changed in the Middle East since Lawrence’s time except the tribes became countries, have oil and wealth, modern conveniences and toys, but still pretty much a tribal mindset. -

I’m watching “Burn Notice” and Michael Shanks is a character in tonight’s show.
~~~~ He’s dreamy ~~~~ -
Who is Michael Shanks?…..never heard of him, TV/Movie star β
Michael Shanks played “Daniel Jackson” on Stargate: SG1, of which I own the complete ten seasons in DVD form. He’s played a bad guy on Nikita, and now he’s playing a bad guy on “Burn Notice”. I’ve seen him in a few other shows.
I loved his Daniel Jackson character, but I like him doing just about anything.
~~~~ Heβs dreamy ~~~~
But then, I like Richard Dean Anderson in SG1, too. If a man ever aged well, he has! -

That sounds like a great idea. Maybe we could have it here at the Dome. I’ll have to clear it with Hubby. The place is big enough…and there’s more room in the back yard now. Although I’ll have to clear my veggie garden – it’s just a big hairy weed patch right now.

It’ll be cool by then, the party invitations can say: Bring a yard tool and get cracking!
