Friday Presidential Resemblance Open Comments

Here’s an interesting article on PJ Media by Roger Simon, titled “Which Former President Does Barack Obama Most Resemble?”

The conventional wisdom, especially on the right, is that of all past presidents Barack Obama most closely resembles Jimmy Carter. Both men, after all, presided over parlous economic times and chose ultra-typical liberal solutions that did not work, apparently worsening the situation and leading to, in Carter’s own term, national “malaise.” Both men also had to deal with serious challenges from Iran and did so, to say the least, ineffectually.

I think that at one point, Carteresque was a best-case scenario. We’re well past that, into uncharted territory. Without spoiling the article too much, Simon has another recent president in mind.
My personal opinion is that if one were compelled to choose only one former president and limit the choices to numbers 1 through 43, the choice would be #28 Woodrow Wilson. Wilson gave us not only the Fed, but ultimately the UN. He was an academic who thought much more highly of himself and his knowledge than was warranted. He thought that our Federal system of government was highly flawed and favored a parliamentary government because our system of checks and balances impeded progress and made things too complicated. Wilson believed that he was selected by God to be president.
That’s if I had to choose only one. If one were to choose attributes of various presidents to create an Obama-like Frankenpresident, whole new vista open up: Nixon’s paranoia, LBJ & FDR’s free-spending socialist ways, Carter’s general ineptitude especially as it related to the Middle East, Buchanan’s indifference to how current events were shaping up to a complete disaster for the country in the very near future, Clinton’s willingness to evade the truth, Wilson’s unwarranted high opinion of himself.
I can’t think of a single actual good quality of Obama relative to any former president. His supposed eloquence is nothing more that high school speech class public speaking lessons on steroids and without a teleprompter is simply painful to listen to. His “cool” is simply manufactured or bestowed on him by sycophants.
What do you all think? Let’s hear your thoughts for both single person and multiperson.

Nixon? I get the Isolationism and the comparison of Watergate to Fast and Furious, but the later is NOT being covered by the Lame Stream media (and will not be). There will be no threat of impeachment this time.

Yup, a man for the middle class alright; What You Get at a Fundraiser With Anna Wintour and Sarah Jessica Parker

Tickets cost $40,000, about as much as the average person makes in a year. For donating all that money, what kind of party favors do these guests get? We can’t afford to attend ourselves to find out firsthand, and even if we could, journalistic principles would bar us from going in the first place.

This was the topic that Klein was “quibbling” about:

A quite dispiriting spectacle. And more than a bit confusing. Why, just this week the estimable Jeb Bush averred that the Republican party had become so rigidly right-wing that today it couldn’t even nominate Ronald Reagan.

Huh? It just nominated Mitt Romney who lives a good 14 nautical miles to the left of Ronald Reagan.

Goodness. Four more months of this campaign and we will all be unhinged.

If you think the Left’s assault on liberty and freedom began in the 1960s or with FDR, well, think again.

The roots of modern liberalism reach deeply into the 19th century. Wilson was the most evil, reprehensible of presidents and only by the grace of divine intercession (his stroke while in office) was America spared the worst of his nightmarish vision.

The mentor of the then young Woodrow Wilson at Johns Hopkins University, Ely was a dedicated opponent of individual liberty, personal responsibility, free markets and classical liberal principles of limited government. Indeed, he was a moral relativist who believed that “the end justifies the means” and championed socialism, fascism, racism, eugenics, colonialism, imperialism, historicism and militarism. As in his converting Wilson to “Progressivism,” Ely was highly influential in developing the “social gospel movement” of many liberal Protestant denominations in the U.S. in deifying the State as the agent of God. The essential tenets of the “social gospel” were to abandon the orthodox Christian teachings of natural law and the divinity of and salvation through Jesus as the Christ for a secularized “social salvation” of “social justice” achieved by regimenting society into a statist “heaven on earth.” Ely championed racial supremacy, war, and government control of schools, health care, employment, business, immigration, marriage and the family, housing, food, welfare, security, energy, and all other aspects of human life. His books became the key textbooks for the teaching of countless students across the country including many, many Protestant clergy, and to this day, the Episcopal Church (USA) honors him as a “saint” in their liturgical calendar with a feast day on October 8th.

Rick Perry occasionally stumbles into the right thing now and then.

Peter Robinson, Hoover Institution Fellow and producer of the great Uncommon Knowledge video interview series, was a young, 30 year old speechwriter for President Reagan when he wrote the famous 1987 “Tear Down This Wall” speech delivered in Berlin. The State Department, Colin Powell and Howard Baker all demanded the famous phrase be removed, but Reagan overruled them.

Robinson just flew to Austin this week to interview Governor Perry. On Wednesday, Perry officially made Robinson an Honorary Texan. He was so excited by it, he posted a photo over at Ricochet.com.

Perry’s timing was perfect on the 25th anniversary of that Reagan speech.

One of the reasons that American libertarians as a political movement never amount to anything is that they can be incredibly intolerant people. This may seem counterintuitive, but while a great many fiscal and social conservatives are willing to seek compromise in common purpose, libertarians are forever in search of hills to die on for their noble and incorruptible principles, particularly when it comes to locally grown produce or which is the best Von Mises book (Human Action you say? Poseur!). Libertarians form factions within factions, cliques within cliques, and the more libertine they are, the more oppressively dull.– Ben Domenech

    Heh.

As nearly everyone knows, the Wright brothers invented the first controllable airplane. Many people may be vaguely aware that this feat was accomplished without benefit of Federal aid. Few, however, are aware that government-funded efforts to develop a heavier-than-air flying machine prior to the Wright brothers’ venture were a total failure.

In the period preceding the December 17, 1903 Wright brothers’ triumph at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the U.S. government spent $70,000 on a grant to Dr. Samuel Langley to develop a heavier-than-air flying machine. The award of this grant followed standard bureaucratic procedures. Dr. Langley, director of the Smithsonian In stitution, was one of the most renowned scientists of the time. When Dr. Langley became interested in investigating flight he was able to marshal tremendous technical and financial resources.

The selection of Langley as the recipient of government funding was technically unassailable. It was the type of decision that a well motivated government bureaucracy would make time and again. The credentials were impressive. The funding was more than adequate. Yet, despite the head start and more lavish budget enjoyed by Dr. Langley, it was the Wrights who succeeded.

On October 7, 1903, the aircraft developed by Dr. Langley’s team was deemed ready for a test flight. The aircraft was to be launched [p. 309] from a catapult on a houseboat in the Potomac River, with Charles Manly serving as pilot. Excitement filled the air as the houseboat reached the launch site. A large crowd gathered, fireworks were set off, and newspapermen jockeyed for position in the hope of witnessing the momentous occasion of man’s first flight.

Hopes were raised and hearts quickened as the aircraft’s engine roared to life. At full throttle the craft was released from restraint and lunged along the catapult track toward launch. A few seconds of glorious acceleration were followed by an unceremonious plunge into the Potomac by the would-be airplane.

The pilot and aircraft were salvaged and preparations were made for another flight. On December 8, 1903, with diminished fanfare, another test flight was attempted. Unfortunately the aircraft became entangled in the launching mechanism, was severely damaged, and toppled into the river.

Little more than a week later the Wright brothers successfully flew a heavier-than-air machine. Disappointed at being bested in the effort to develop an airplane, Dr. Langley, in a fashion that has come to characterize the persistent failure of government undertakings, laid much of the blame on “inadequate” Federal funding.

While Dr. Langley was engaged in epitomizing the typical government approach to problem solving, two young entrepreneurs were experimenting with their own airplane. The Wright brothers had no Federal money to support their research. Instead they used $2,000 of the money they earned from their bicycle business to develop their flyer. They worked on the flyer in their spare time while managing their bicycle shop. On numerous occasions the Wright brothers actually refused financial assistance from private contributors for fear that it would take them away from their business and make them complacent. Wilbur Wright told his father that the demands of his business forced him to be more cautious about the use of his time, and to carry out his experiments in the most expeditious manner possible.Conserving Limited Resources.

#51 Hamous, you are correct. The Wright Bros. received no government funding for development. (Also, neither brother held an official high school diploma.)

In the fall of 1905 they wrote directly to Secretary of War William Howard Taft, complaining that they had received scant attention from the army. The War Department refused to consider purchasing their product/design unless the government was provided with detailed drawings and descriptions of their flying machine up-front. The Wrights refused to divulge their IP or conduct a demo flight without a firm contract for purchase (contingent on a satisfactory demo flight.) Ten days later, the Wrights peddled the same offer to the English, and later to the French and Germans. Those countries, along with the U.S. initially insisted that a contract include an exclusivity clause. The Wrights were awarded patents in several European countries prior to receiving one from the U.S.

Were Orville and Wilbur libertarians? 🙂

Malone was so obvioulsy pandering that it became an insult to my intelligence.
“Jet Thief One” might be the kind of catchy phrase one could use to sell something like soda pop, but as an inspirational theme to motivate and inform it lacks a very great deal. He spent time criticizing individuals rather than championing ideas.

Machowicz has the passion that Malone so obviously lacked, particularly for the Constition. While some may denigrate ideas like “waking up the warrior within”, many more of us feel that as long as we find ourselves in a struggle for the future of the country, waking up the warrior within is a good idea. One of the reasons Conservatives are falling in behind Romney is that the see him as being willing to fight and fight hard and so will forgive him some of his faults.

I just can’t believe Patrick installed a novice – and one with no local perspective/history – into the important morning slot. There’s nothing wrong with giving someone an opportunity – and Patrick admirably has a history of doing so – but Mack better pick it up or he’s out of there very soon.
It could be a case of a severe lack of qualified candidates.
Let’s face it, there are only two or three top notch national shows.

He apparently has ties to the local area, although I am unfamiliar with his enitire bio. Some friends of mine ran into him in a Taco Bell near Ellington about 4 years ago. They were in uniform and he came over to say hi. It was at the same time that Future Weapons was on the air, and they were impressed that he would do such a thing.

A guy who’s had two television shows is not exactly a novice, but its not without precedent that has met with success. The first time I met Edd Hendee it was while standing on the concrete slab of what would later become Taste of Texas (we did the drafting on the building). Edd was a total novice when he went on the radio, and we all sit here today bemoaning his absence.

Someone needs to give him some decaf. I found myself turning off the radio completely as I drove down to Sweeny to meet a prospective tenant. As much of a talk show junkie that I am, the silence was preferable to the in-your-face I was getting from Mack.

I wish him well. I just may not be able to take his intensity all the time. And I also, wish he’d cover more material. I get bored listening to the “audience participation” on the same topic for as long as he’s holding the topic alive. There’s more going on in the world, even the local one, than what he’s discussing.

“I wish you could travel around the world with me, 600,000 miles so far just as Vice President,” Biden said, adding that he wished he could show them cities in China.

“If I blindfolded Americans and took them into some of the airports or ports in China, and then took one of them to any of your cities in the middle of the night just so that they could see it,” Biden said. “If I said, ‘which one is in America and which one is in China,’ most Americans would say, ‘That great one is in America.’”

    “It’s not.” Biden said emphatically.

According to Bidden: Great cities = Chinese cities. Say, that would be a good source for satire, no?

In fact, I rather agree with Richard D. Land, the president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, who calls Mormonism a fourth Abrahamic religion, along with Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Being set apart from Christianity in this way could give Mormonism a chance to fashion its own legacy.

Christianity, you’ll recall, had to fight the same battle. Many early Christians grew up reading the Torah, living the law, observing the Sabbath and thinking of themselves as Jews. They were aghast to find that traditional Judaism regarded them as something else entirely.

In addition, these Christians had to defend their use of additional scripture and their unconventional conception of God and explain why they were following a bumpkin carpenter from some obscure backwater. Early Christianity’s relationship with non-Jews was even worse. Roman writers frequently alluded to rumors about the cannibalistic and hedonistic elements of early Christian rites. One after the other, Christians went to the lions because they found it impossible to defend themselves against such outrageous accusations. They did eat flesh and drink blood every Sunday, after all.

Interesting perspective. What I think he’s doing is simply narrowing down the definition of “Christian” which people in mainstream Christianity use against the LDS to claim the latter are not Christian. The irony is that these definitions are not biblically based. “Christian” is mentioned in the Bible only in conjunction with those who followed Christ. This broad definition of “Christian” is good enough for me.

And now, for our (not so religious) featured program.

The NY Mets must want to avoid a similar scene:

A doctor in a psychiatric hospital was enjoying a fair degree of success in treating his autistic patients, so he went to the director of the hospital, asking to take them to a baseball game as a reward.

The director wanted to see exactly how much success the doctor was having so he asked him to show him.

The met the next day in the autistic ward. The patients were busy doing their own things and the doctor called out, “Listen up, nuts!”

They all immediately stopped what they were doing and gave him their rapt attention.

“Face the flag and hands on hearts, nuts!”

They all stood facing the flag, hands on hearts as if the National Anthem was being played.

    “Be seated, nuts!”

    They all sat down.

    “Carry on, nuts!”

They all resumed what they were doing before. The director gave his consent for a field trip to a baseball game.

At the game, everything went very well. All the patients were very well behaved and the director was duly impressed. The doctor got up to use the restroom. When he returned, the entire section was in utter pandemonium.

He rushed over to the director and asked what happened.

“I don’t know. The guy selling peanuts came by and they all went crazy urinating all over each other and the nearby fans.”

President Obama is obviously not content with Shamaal’s presentation that deportation of illegals is up under his administration.

Since yesterday’s much-hyped “reframing” speech in Ohio was so widely panned (and rightly so, as Guy points out), Team Obama needed something epic to replace the unflattering headlines. And hey, if it’ll appeal to a major, potentially-swing voting bloc, more’s the better. So Obama did what he does best — circumventing Congress — and had Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano release new, DREAM Act-like guidelines that relax deportation standards. Now, illlegal immigrants who meet certain criteria may stay here, and obtain work permits:

The Obama administration will stop deporting and begin granting work permits to younger illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and have since led law-abiding lives. The election-year initiative addresses a top priority of an influential Latino electorate that has been vocal in its opposition to administration deportation policies.

The policy change, described to The Associated Press by two senior administration officials, will affect as many as 800,000 immigrants who have lived in fear of deportation. It also bypasses Congress and partially achieves the goals of the so-called DREAM Act, a long-sought but never enacted plan to establish a path toward citizenship for young people who came to the United States illegally but who have attended college or served in the military.

If I recall bob42’s posts way back when he should support this move by Obama as well.

Anb when Shamaal points out the following:

Notably, the policy does not offer citizenship; in fact, it’s pretty similar to Marco Rubio’s iteration of the DREAM Act (as an aside, keep an eye out to see how the left receives Obama’s new policy, since they were so quick to stamp Rubio’s plan as bad for immigrants).

I’ll need to remind him that I once posted that I was confused as to what Rubio expected to accomplish by his version of the DREAM Act. I remain confused.

The roots of modern liberalism reach deeply into the 19th century

Yes, through John Stuart Mill to John Locke. With a short breather at the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Now that we got the 19th Century labeled, let’s move on to the 20th ………….

Wilson was the most evil, reprehensible of presidents and only by the grace of divine intercession (his stroke while in office) ….

Divine Intercession? I can hardly wait for the interpretation of God’s intercession when he sent the pretzel assassin to Bush 43, caused the World Trade Center to collapse, or a Shuttle to disintegrate over Texas.

Now we get to the heart of the hit piece scholarly article.

Ely was a dedicated opponent of individual liberty, personal responsibility, free markets and classical liberal principles of limited government.

That would be this Richard Ely

“I condemn alike,” he declared, “that individualism that would allow the state no room for industrial activity, and that socialism which would absorb in the state the functions of the individual.” He argued that socialism was not needed, and “the alternative of socialism is our complex socio-economic order, which is based, in the main, upon private property.” He warned that the proper “balance between private and public enterprise” is “menaced by socialism, on the one hand, and by plutocracy, on the other.”

Sounds like another one of those “right when I agree with him wrong when I don’t dichotomies.”

    But what about Obamacare?

Outside the courtroom, Holley stood next to community activist Quanell X who said that Holley’s family has been unable to buy medication for “mental and physical problems.”

“I believe with the proper guidance, proper therapists and him taking the meds he needs to be taking, he will be the same man he’s been since the initial incident,” Quanell said. “Once he stopped taking those meds, this young man became somebody else. It’s unfortunate, it’s tragic and we’re still disappointed with this recent arrest.”

I’ve been thinking more and more about my saxophone. I’d really like to start playing it again. There’s something really special about creating beauty literally out of thin air. My horn is so tarnished it’s sad. I had a really good line horn. The pads are all dried out and I’m sure the keys need lubricating and cleaning. I checked, and it’d be about $1500-2000 to get it completely overhauled. For a Selmer like I have, it might be worth it; for the use I’d give it, probably not. I can find some student-intermediate use horns for about $400-600. Since it would be for me, I can probably get by with one of those. I guess when the time comes, I can sell my current horn for almost nothing to one of the refurbishers, with tears for the memories I created with the instrument and hope that someone else would enjoy it as much as I did.

And it will take a while to get my lip back in shape. A saxophone embochure isn’t as tight as a clarinet player’s, but it still requires some “training”. And I’ll have to practice my fingering and my scales, but it’s like riding a bike. It shouldn’t take long.

That must be the same 737 I boarded in Ulaanbaator, Mongolia on my way to Beijing. When I started to strap in, there was only half a seat belt. IMO, making the announcement on a Friday, means that the Romney camp has to wait for the weekend polls before responding and maybe even attempting to top. It also means that we’ll have to wait to see how this polls with American Catholics and the other religious groups that have been pushing for a more reasonable immigration policy.
The other side of this is how does the right react? Already Steve King is threatening a lawsuit.

Ah ha!!! I was hoping Rubio would not go down that road; but, alas, he is. I’m all for allowing certain illegals to stay but the border *MUST* be secured first. That is paramount to overall mmigration reform. And the government will do nothing for the people so long as the people let it do what it wants.

Mar this down as my first notable disapointment with Rubio.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said the more lenient policy is “welcome news” for those immigrants who will benefit, though he was quick to knock the administration for acting unilaterally.

“Today’s announcement will be welcome news for many of these kids desperate for an answer, but it is a short term answer to a long term problem,” the Cuban-American Rubio said in a statement. “And by once again ignoring the Constitution and going around Congress, this short term policy will make it harder to find a balanced and responsible long term one.”

That is simply an incredulous thing for Rubio to say. That’s more absent minded than George W. saying he sacrificed the free market in order to save it.
