A long piece of rope represents three dimensionally a series of waves floating in space, as well as producing sounds from the physical action of their movement: the rope which creates the volume also simultaneously creates the sound by cutting through the air, making up a single element.

When I was a kid, around 6 or so, I was riding in the car with my mom and observed a similar phenomenon with the car’s radio antenna as we were going down the road. There were places where the antenna was still and other places where is was moving in big circles. I was fascinated by it, mom didn’t think much of it.

If I understand many of the opinions expressed here, even if he is married with children and loves his partner wife; he would still be considered the spawn of Satan and drummed out of many churches.

Clearly the author does not understand the views expressed. Having a desire is not sinful in itself, the sin happens when one acts in a sinful way in fulfilling that desire. For example (this is a fictional example, it is for illustration only!) I have may have a desire to “do” my secretary (who is not my wife). If I dwell on that desire and do the deed in my mind (lust for her), I fall into sin, if I act on the desire and do the deed with her I fall into sin. If the idea pops in and is summarily dismissed, no harm and no sin. The same holds true for over-indulgence in alcohol, or taking what does not belong to you, etc. Simply having the desire is not the issue, the issue is how one acts on it.
I seriously doubt anyone on the couch would condemn anyone who merely had the desire for sin (whatever that particular sin may be) yet did not dwell or act on it. To the contrary, I submit that most, if not all, would be congratulatory and supportive of the individual in his victory in overcoming that sinful desire.

Again, I advise everyone to the scifi story “With Folded Hands”. It’s about 40 pages or so. Jack Williamson.

    Synopsis

Jack Williamson’s novel, The Humanoids (1949), is considered of the most important stories about robots and humanity. Many previous stories about robots, excluding Asimov’s, portrayed robots as evil beings bent on the destruction of humanity. The robots in The Humanoids have exactly the opposite problem–they are too benevolent. Their Prime Directive is “To Serve and Obey, And Guard Men From Harm” but they take it too far. Asimov’s robots are often in the position of saving humanity from itself, but these robots turn humans into docile sheep by following their programming too closely. They do not allow any risky behavior, they do not allow unhappiness, they do not allow anything new or exciting: they basically do not allow humans to be human. This story is similar to many utopian/dystopian novels such as 1984 and Zamiatin’s We where humans are kept under control for their own protection, but it leads to a stifling of the human spirit, freedom, and creativity. A group of humans rebel against this tyranny but the robots soon learn how to make them happy as well.

This novel is an expansion of the original influential story “With Folded Hands” (1947) by Jack Williamson. The title refers to the only thing left for humanity to do: sit with folded hands as the robots take care of all their troubles.

I went into a convenience store in Willis with a six year old nephew many years ago (he’s grown and has a kid of his own now). The man standing in line in front of us had his voice box removed and had one of those electronic voice boxes held up to his neck hole talking to the cashier. I saw the kid’s eyes get big as he started tugging on my arm and was hoping he would keep quiet long enough, but alas it was not to be. He finally blurted out “Uncle Mark! That man’s a robot!”

Michelle Malkin has another great article about the squishy Rs relative to O-care. There is a way to help promote younger people and those who are not covered by health insurance through their employer, and that is to give all individuals who purchase individual/family coverage outside of employment, the same tax breaks that a company gets. If we keep our current income tax code (which I do not favor) then health insurance costs should be an off the top deduction, even for those who do not itemize. Further, the state insurance cartels need to be broken up and allow insurance to be sold across state lines. The increased competition will drive costs down and combined with the tax deduction, the individual will now have a positive incentive to obtain health insurance instead of the negative force of the 900lb govt gorilla.

Radley “The Agitator” Balko takes David Brooks to task on his NYT op-ed, The Follower Problem.

In this particular column Brooks specifically calls for allegiance to our political leaders. This makes me wonder if Brooks owns a television or regularly reads a newspaper. Our politicians are clownish, ridiculous people. Even if you’re the die-hardest of die-hard blue- or red-staters, in your most honest moments you have to concede that Nancy Pelosi and John Boehner are absurd human beings. If they didn’t hold positions of power, you’d want nothing to do with these people.

    From Brooks:

You end up with movements like Occupy Wall Street and the Tea Parties that try to dispense with authority altogether. They reject hierarchies and leaders because they don’t believe in the concepts. The whole world should be like the Internet — a disbursed semianarchy in which authority is suspect and each individual is king.

Maybe before we can build great monuments to leaders we have to relearn the art of following.

#18 Hamous, you’re a good follower. David Brooks would be proud of how well you sing the fringe authoritarian songs. As usual, your argument has a fundamentally flawed premise.

Just like Bobo, he figures if he keeps portraying all Christians opposed to special rights equal treatment under the law for homosexuals as the American equivalent of the Taliban…

I consider them far from “equivalent” but the religious right wing fringe does in fact share some philosophical aspects with the authoritarian fundie Muslims. Both desire domination and the integration of religion and government. And both irrationally consider gay people to be a threat to “society.”

Neither have much appreciation for the demonstrable benefits of keeping government and religion separated.

Wrong once again Bobby! Speaking as one who is both “religious” (at least from your POV) and who is right wing, I can state with a fair amount of certainty that aside from a very few, small, nutcase cults, nobody wants to integrate religion and government. I surely don’t. I do however believe that in some areas involving morality, the legal system should reflect the viewpoint of the majority. Please note that nobody here has ever once come even close to advocating for the criminalization of homosexual activity. You can continue to carouse with whomever you would like as far as we are concerned. Just keep it to yourself.

The issue with homosexual marriage, as I have stated before, and you have never tried to address, even once, is that now there are a few gays who want not just tolerance, but approval. You, and others who keep fanning the flames of this issue, want society to say that we accept and approve gay relationships just like we accept and approve traditional relationships.

To those who claim that it simply is not possible to “legislate morality” I submit that each and every law ever written is a legislation of someone’s morality on a given subject. All laws are legislations of morality; the big question to ask now is: On what objective standard of morality are you going to base your laws? I would submit that THE STANDARD today is as it was and that is the collection of writings between and including Genesis and Revelation. This standard, of course, prohibits the squishy moral relativism and evolution so ardently promoted by Bobo and the stain.

I’d like to thank filmmaker Danny Boyle, architect of this year’s opening ceremonies at the London summer games, for finding a way to encapsulate everything I despise about the modern Olympics. Boyle has done us a favor. Could anything better represent the vacuous idiocy of the guilt-ridden peacenik agrarian delusions of the modern Olympics than creating a pricey set-piece of man vs. weeds, and then blasting this “Tempest-inspired” tale to the eyes of the developing world. “See, we’re not like the rest of these bloody Westerners,” it says; “we reject our industrialism and accept that moral demand to produce less carbon and live simpler – and we’ll prove it by blowing $42 million on a super-sized ‘let’s play farming’ playset.” Guess what folks: conservation is a luxury good. Percent of England’s GDP which comes from agriculture: Two. Know what a nation which decides to reject the advancements of centuries of human endeavor to return to the halcyon days when we worshiped the gods of the crops can’t do? It can’t afford to spend millions of its children’s money so pepper-pot NHS nurses can chase geese around a taxpayer-bankrolled stadium. -Ben Domenech

Licensing requirements most often originate from within an industry/profession. Certainly there is a self-serving aspect, but it also allows the credentialed licensee mobility within the industry and across state lines and theoretically protects the consumer.

The problem lies in government viewing it as a revenue source.

It is a control issue as well, they can create all sorts of requirements to make you toe the line or you lose your license. I have my hands on people sometimes using considerable force, if there are ever any complaints they happen right then and there and an adjustment is made. The object, in my practice, is to treat the underlying dysfunction and stimulate the body to repair itself. The body wants to repair itself anyway, I just help remove the roadblocks. All of my business comes from word of mouth, as do most therapists; ifn you start not performing and failing to accomplish the objective you will not have any business.

My next door neighbor spent years building this car almost from scratch. He would like to sell it to someone who will use it as it was intended.

It’s a Factory Five kit and he has over $100,000 buried in it, but it was a labor of love for him, a project he took up after his first wife died an untimely death.

Here is a very detailed description and history of the car with a beautiful set of photos. The asking price is $39,000.

If you know of anyone who would be interested in a handmade work of art like this one, please pass this on.

I do not have any as I have very little in the way of attachable assets. My house, to my understanding, is not attachable. I am very selective as to whom I will work on and if I have any reservations, I usually only work on them once, if I do at all. I am blessed at this time to be able to not have to depend on therapy income as I have a day job. The last time I looked at acquiring liability ins, I think the rate was $5-600/yr for $1mil coverage/per incident and $5mil lifetime.

President Obama has increased his lead over Mitt Romney to 24 points, 59-35 percent, up a little from 57-37 percent last month, according to a new Siena College Research Institute poll of registered voters released today. Big majorities say that Obama will do a better job than Romney on keeping the country safe from terrorism, fighting for middle class families, tackling health care, resolving Social Security and Medicare, and improving the economy. Obama also bests Romney on creating jobs, making the federal government work more effectively and addressing the deficit, albeit by smaller margins.

One of Mrs. Shamaal’s favorite shows is House Hunter International. Some couple buys a ridiculously small house overseas for an obscene amount of money. Tension is created by giving the illusion that the couple is selecting a house when, in fact, they must purchase a house before they film the show. I must admit, I do like the scenery and all, but the false drama does tend to wear on one.

The blog Hooked on Houses is giving fans a dose of reality about the HGTV series “House Hunters.” According to an interview with a former participant, Bobi Jensen, much of the popular show, which has been on the air since 1999, is faked.

Good find! It’s rare to see a coal industry site pointing out how inefficient it is to use Coal fired energy plants, even as standbys. In Texas they fire up natural gas plants when demand exceeds supply. They burn much cleaner.

Argonne National Laboratory, under the stewardship of the Department of Energy, just released a study that found wind energy does not reduce carbon dioxide emissions from electricity generation as much as expected due to the need to ramp up fossil fuel plants when the wind is not blowing. It takes more energy and thus more carbon dioxide emissions to ramp a coal plant up and down than if the same coal plant is operated at a continuous, efficient base-load level.

This is not a new finding. A study by Bentek Energy[i] identified this phenomenon about 2 years ago, and the findings are summarized by IER here.[ii] The difference in the studies is that Argonne evaluated Illinois electricity market data and Bentek evaluated the analogous situation in Colorado and Texas. But, the findings are essentially the same.

Phenomenon ? Are they kidding ?

Republicans are dropping the job-killing meme for the health care plan.

I understand that they will call it Health Care Change and blame it on the sun getting hotter.

Speaker John Boehner recently told Republicans in a private meeting to change their tone on health care and fast: stop using “job-killing” to describe the Obama health care law.
Instead, emphasize that the law drives up costs and makes things worse for small businesses.
Why? The job-killing message was polling poorly, sources said.
