I’m dragging myself out of bed and saying “Holy Crap, It’s Monday Again!” I’m a little sore from digging, was up late, and now I’m rubbing the sleep from my eyes and trying to make sense of my hair.
While I wrestle my hair into something that doesn’t resemble road kill, whiy don’t y’all come in? I’ll make tea when I’m fully awake. Just don’t mess with Barf Kitty. You’ll regret it. She’ll never leave you alone.

Were any of the hamsters up early enough to see the moon in the eastern sky, this moonth is rapidly closing. In the next couple of days it will rise closer to dawn and be just the skinniest sliver in the sky hanging over the eastern horizon. When the moon re-appears Sat or Sun in the western sky just after sunset, we will be in the first of the Biblical months and the start of the Biblical festivals of Passover, Feast of Unleavened Bread and First Fruits is just about 12 days hence. As we calculate the season, based on the phase of the moon, this year Passover will be on Thursday 05April and the First day of Feast of Unleavened Bread will be on Good Friday. I should note that our reckoning does not coincide with the Hillel calendar.

What I teach my students each year (so that can impress their parents):Easter is always the first Sunday following the first full moon following the spring equinox. Then you calculate back to determine when Lent begins.
I’m supposing that goes back to calculations of the Jewish festival of Passover, since Easter and Passover are always linked.

#11 TT: Not wanting to pick a fight, merely for clarity:
1) Ex 23:14 (some renderings differ by a verse or 2) states clearly that these are HIS feasts, not Jewish feasts. He was speaking to all of Israel at the time, the separation between Judah (the Jews) and Israel would not happen for several hundred years. HE commanded that all of Israel perform these feast FOR HIM. Every believer in Messiah is part of Israel, (See Eph 2:12, they are grafted in).
2) The beginning of months occurs when you have the new moon (darkness) a couple of days prior or the first after the vernal equinox, one of the “witnesses” as to the correct season is the barley being “green in the ear”. This will only happen around the time of the vernal equinox. Green in the ear means that the grain heads have formed and are full but not ripe, but will be in a week or 2. It is in the month of aviv or springtime. The beginning of months is 6 months prior to the “head of the year” and we can analogize this as a civil year vs fiscal year.
3) Easter and Passover occur around the same time of the year, but Passover is always dictated by the phase of the moon, while Easter is always on a Sunday.
4) The High Sabbaths are dictated ALWAYS by the phase of the moon and are completely independent of the day of the week. Conflating the day of the week with the High Sabbaths goes against what Scripture dictates.Once again, I put this out there for clarity’s sake, not to pick a fight.

Gotta go see Mom today. Turns out I forgot to bring her Fixodent. She’s about out of chew glue.
AND I need to meet with the social worker – Mom’s freaking out over what she thinks she knows, which is probably wrong. For example, she thought she was getting a sleeping pill, but it was a statin for her cholesterol. So she hid those little buggers instead of swallowing them.

ABC does it again: ‘B!tch’: ABC’s War on Women
On April 11, ABC launches a new sitcom titled “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 ,”…
/snip
“Slut” will cost you advertisers. “Nappy headed ho” will cost you your job.“B**ch” not so much.
Remember, it’s okay to wage open warfare on some women — you know, like conservative Christians.
From the comments on the above story:
When did including profanity in show titles begin to slip past the FCC?
Would it be okay for a Conservative to produce a sitcom called “Obama’s B**ch”?
It could be about the First Lady.
Or Hillary.
Or Biden.
Or Axelrod.
Or Carney.
Or _____ (fill in the blank)
It would be highly inappropriate, but that’s the point.
I’m sorry, but that comment brought a smile to my face.

We’ve been looking for a machinist for quite a while. We finally got the resume of a decent candidate who’s been out of work for a while. We got it through the Texas Workforce Commission. We interviewed him and made a good offer. He didn’t accept. It appears he’s just sending out resumes so he can keep getting unemployment checks. We need to quit extending unemployment benefits.

Bristol Palin made a blog post:
In a post on her new blog and in clear, sincere language, Bristol appeals to the president’s highest, noblest instincts — most especially his instinct to protect his daughters, the instinct he cited as the reason he felt compelled to call Sandra Fluke to apologize for Rush’s insults. She writes:
If Maher talked about Malia and Sasha that way, you’d return his dirty money and the Secret Service would probably have to restrain you. After all, I’ve always felt you understood my plight more than most because your mom was a teenager. That’s why you stood up for me when you were campaigning against Sen. McCain and my mom — you said vicious attacks on me should be off limits.
Yet I wonder if the Presidency has changed you. Now that you’re in office, it seems you’re only willing to defend certain women. You’re only willing to take a moral stand when you know your liberal supporters will stand behind you.
But…
What if you did something radical and wildly unpopular with your base and took a stand against the denigration of all women… even if they’re just single moms? Even if they’re Republicans?
Good post, Bristol, nobody should hold their breath though.

I’m not sure if this Maher (or any other comedian) apologies for their acts stuff is sticking. But keep flinging; hope springs eternal.
An interesting interview with Peter Wooley who came up with the insult in Blazing Saddles that Maher channeled without the alliteration. I hope he doesn’t have to apologize too.

Staying home and sitting on your ass for $10/hour is apparently more attractive than actually working for a living for a decent wage.

Actually you got it somewhat wrong, merely stating facts, not bragging.
I worked aerospace for 19 years in Houston, then left to go to the oilfield when Bush cancelled the Shuttle and 13,000 jobs. I could see the writing on the wall.
The oilfield was good for a year then the price dropped significantly, and after making a boatload of money went on unemployment – top dollar $400/week that went into the Texas economy.
After 6 mos unemployment returned to aerospace on a stimulus job.
Still with the same company I keep one foot in aerospace and one foot in oilfield. These last two weekends were the first off since early December. Folks may have noticed my increase in posts. 😉
Oh, and I just got a Navy job, I can’t disclose until after the press release. There are people out there living underneath overpasses, I do not begrudge them unemployment, I am lucky, and some might say, blessed.

I reiterate, if his staying home and sitting on his ass for $10/hour is more attractive than working for you for $15/hour; you may not have wanted the individual.I’m guessing at the dollar amounts, if our machinist made $15/hr in his previous job, he’s drawing $7.80/hr on unemployment

At the expense of $800 sucked out of contractors like me. Which would have worked better? Texas unemployment is a tax, based on your employment record. I seriously doubt you will ever pay it.

Then let’s pay unemployent $20/hr to not work and so that way we can not hire even more lazy people?
Is it me or is Shamaal not recognizing, perhaps on purpose, the humasn nature to do the least amount of work as possible while still living comfortably? That working requires one to work against human nature and that’s how one becomes a better person? Hamous’ offer was by choice and the person who received the offer made a choice. Perhaps, just perhaps, that person would have taken the job offer and chosen to fight human nature, thus improving himself and others if his unemployment benefits were no longer going to come in?
Why the person turned down the job is pure educated speculation but continuing to fund unemployment benefits does create laziness and in the end nobody really “benefits” from them. I think that’s the main point Hamous trying to make yet Shamaal can’t come to openly acknolwedge that. Isn’t that “trolling”?

Clearly I am misunderstanding you. Are you claiming that you are paying $800/week per ex-employee for them to receive $400/week.
I recall only the first $9K being taxable at 2.7%. And that used to be zero until the economy went south and Perry increased it. I think he’s on his third tax increase, but I could be wrong. -

Based upon what I see in NJ & NY, this guy is collecting his unemployment and doing contract machine work for cash – not what he used to make, but more in his pocket without deductions. He’s actually making more than he did when he was formally employed.

We are declining work. That hurts. But we have just over three quarters of filing hiring reports to our nlrb compliance officer. The fear of being penalized for hiring the wrong people is all too real.Must be nice. The Obama Economy still has the constructon industry on its knees, and on unemployment. It is getting better. I was out of work for 6 weeks the frst year of his Presidency, a 5 weeks the second year, and only a month so far this year. But I ran out of work at lunch today, there will be none tomorrow, and might have some on Wednesday. And, as a contractor, I can’t collect unemployment the same way other folks do.

Sorry, I honestly believe folks work to to meet their needs and those they are responsible for. I’m a regular pollanna.
A simple poll might demonstrate what I mean.
Anyone on this forum who would rather take unemployment at $10/hr than work for $15/hr. Come-on, show of hands.
See, none and I think the group of folks here are a good cross section.Let’s tray another poll: number of folks here who would accept unemployment if they didn’t have to?
As I expected.
I’m afraid I do not share your pessimism regarding the character of your fellow man or woman. If that be trolling, then I’m guessing I’m moving under the bridge.

Shmug, I was pulling numbers out of the air. I don’t think I crossed the line of hyperbole you routinely use.
Somebody is forced to pay unemployment and state sales taxes. I doubt you ever will. Other than the 8 odd percent depending on the county in which you reside.

No wishing to be rude but you can’t hire a REAL Machinist for $15 an hour, you might get a CNC operator for that and he will be supervised by a real machinist. That said, I know three different machinist that have left the industry in the last 15 years because it’s so hard to find a good paying job, and NO they’re NOT drawing unemployment. I don’t know what a real machinist would make today but it would have to be $25 to $30 bucks an hour.

Understood; I wasn’t.
Employers pay 2.7% on the first $9K or $247. It used to be less.
Why does Texas charge that amount? I don’t know, ask Texas. There’s an election coming up along with a primary.
If it doesn’t make sense financially, I’m afraid that’s you call. -

I know better, BUTT if I made a “butt load” of money and wound up without a job, I sure as HE!! wouldn’t draw unemployment, ESPECIALLY not for 6 months!!! $400 is not enough to live on and I could make that mowing grass, (if I had to) AND I have enough $$ saved up for those rainny days to get me by. Way too many people abuse the system and milk the unemployment as long as they can….~ 6 months, isn’t that interesting.

A guy who has found that he can survive on $10.00 an hour he doesn’t have to work for, while collecting food stamps and has the time to sell garage sale items on Ebay and at flea markets, collect a couple hundred a week standing on a street corner with a cardboard sign, pick up cans in the bar ditch, and still have time to go fishing will not be jumping at the chane to change things, even if does mean more money.
Tell him that $10.00 an hour is going to stop coming in and I guarantee things will change.

Of course the underground economy didn’t exist prior to 20 Jan 2009.
I can honestly say I did not know a single unemployed person of any age in northern New Jersey or NYC for the 5 years prior to Obama’s election. Now I know dozens of all ages and though I am an optimist by nature, it is getting worse here.
I am not interested in debating again the distribution of blame for the current set of events.
I can tell you I have talked to half a dozen, blue collar, loyal Democrat, life-long union types in the last week or so who have told me they will vote for any warm body the Republican Party nominates.
They are broke, their grown children are broke and their union halls are empty and there are no limousine liberals like Katrina vanden Heuvel riding around throwing newly minted 100 dollar bills out the window.

I’m a proud 100% unemploymenter. Several near misses through the oilfield bust years finally got me in ’92. Ashamed to do it, went and filed for assistance but a week later found a job in a new industry, haven’t looked back since. Thank the Good Lord for rewarding my hard work.

When I was on it, it was 6 months. The states had just received a 6 month extension from the federal government but Texas hadn’t geared up the phone lines for the demand so I lost out on 3 weeks. And yes, I was almost forced to sell my new oilfield car.
Given my salary, $400/wk barely covered my house payment, and this was when Ike went though. I, like most folks in this situation, dipped into my savings and I didn’t break clear with the IRS until last year. Borrowing money from the government is easier and cheaper than paying income tax.
And no Hamous #111, farting unicorns don’t pay unemployment, employers do at the rate I posted previously.
Looking for work involves 3 contacts a week, Monster. com is sufficient. I understand that after 6 mos, the commission take a much harder look at your efforts. Having special skills made it that more difficult. Hiring returned after the New Year, and my choices were contract work in Abu Dhabi, my present job or another aerospace job.
I make no apologies for being on welfare, I suspect there others here in the same predicament. You do what you gotta do. I have to many friends from Aerospace out of work that aren’t going back, I do not begrudge them unemployment. From the taxes I pay and what I contribute to the Texas economy, the state has more than made back their investment. -

Blog Post of the Week from the indispensable Gerard VanderLeun:
Environmentalism, The Autopsy
The death rattle of environmentalism will be deafening.
It has too much political momentum and fanatical devotion to go quietly. The environmental establishment is a billion-dollar a year business, and there are plenty of stupid guilty rich people, idiot Hollywood celebrities, and direct-mail dupes to keep the agitation machine going for many years to come. — | Power LineAnd as we learn in the holy book of Dylan:
“I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I’ll watch while you’re lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I’ll stand o’er your grave
’Til I’m sure that you’re dead”Stand o’er, I think not. Dance is more like it.

I cannot argue that we are in a great recession and folks are out of work. And if your union friends choose to vote Republican, more power to them.
Of course, as I understand one side of the story, it was unions that got us into this predicament.

Shamaal, we just have a difference of opinion on the roll of Gub’ment. Even though I’ve given them barrels of money, I do not expect my fellow taxpayers to take care of me because I didn’t plan ahead. You’re older than me, I know that because you were on the Enterprise in 71,(so you said) I was in high school that year and when Ike came through I owned my house free and clear, I can’t imagine being over 50 and NOT owning your own abode. But that’s just me. FWIW; I have a nice house, 2100 Sq Feet (basically a one story with a 350 Sq ft loft that is worth about $125,000, not exactly a mansion but plenty good enough for our family. I could have bought much more house but, WHY?? To impress someone who made less money than me and was in debt up to their eyeballs? Nope. not me. 😉

Hamous, report the guy to TWC for declining a bonafide job offer. I did that all the time withthe Katrina immigrants who stood me up. I do not know if the state ever took any action, but I took pleasure in reporting them.
I remember when I bought a business with employees that I paid close to 3% for the first year. I successfully fought all unemployment claims and that percentage shrunk to approximately less than a tenth of a percent by the time I sold the business.

Letter to a Men’s Helpline…
Hi Bob, I really need your advice on a serious problem: I have suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me. The usual signs: if the phone rings and I answer, the caller hangs up; she goes out with the girls a lot. I try to stay awake to look out for her when she comes home but I usually fall asleep. Anyway last night about midnight I hid in the shed, behind the boat. When she came home she got out of someone’s car buttoning her blouse, then she took her panties out of her purse and slipped them on. It was at that moment crouched behind the boat that I noticed a hairline crack in the outboard engine mounting bracket. Is that something I can weld or do I need to replace the whole bracket?

The usual signs: if the phone rings and I answer, the caller hangs up; she goes out with the girls a lot. I try to stay awake to look out for her when she comes home but I usually fall asleep. Anyway last night about midnight I hid in the shed, behind the boat. When she came home she got out of someone’s car buttoning her blouse, then she took her panties out of her purse and slipped them on. It was at that moment crouched behind the boat that I noticed a hairline crack in the outboard engine mounting bracket. Is that something I can weld or do I need to replace the whole bracket? -
Shamaal, we just have a difference of opinion on the roll of Gub’ment. Even though I’ve given them barrels of money, I do not expect my fellow taxpayers to take care of me because I didn’t plan ahead.
That is a difference, the State of Texas does expect employers to partially support the unemployed. My guess it’s the price that is paid to ensure a reasonably stable workforce through boom and bust. That the workforce also votes probably also enters into the equation. 😉 AFAIK only one state requires employees to pay unemployment.
My only debt is the house, and I put the money in savings as opposed to paying off the house, we just have different financial strategies. -

My only debt is the house, and I put the money in savings as opposed to paying off the house, we just have different financial strategies…… No I also put money in savings and before I had my house paid off I could have used a small portion of it to make the payments if need be. There is nothing wrong with making a house payment when you have more than enough to pay it off if the interest rate is low, but, you said, and I quote;
Given my salary, $400/wk barely covered my house payment, and this was when Ike went though. I, like most folks in this situation, dipped into my savings and I didn’t break clear with the IRS until last year. Borrowing money from the government is easier and cheaper than paying income tax.
You also said;
I make no apologies for being on welfare, I suspect there others here in the same predicament. You do what you gotta do.
That, my friend is where we are very different! I’ve never asked for a damn thing from anyone that I didn’t earn and never will. In my 58 years, I’ve worked, (not counting the farm) since I was 15 and have been out of work for one 3 week stretch in the Carter years and I made my own way. Oh, and when Jimmah’ the P-Nut Head finally killed off general aviation back in the early 80’s. I was the guy that turned out the lights in Wichita and moved to Texas.

Shamaal;
Sorry, I honestly believe folks work to to meet their needs and those they are responsible for. I’m a regular pollanna.
Yup, but they do so by overcoming human nature which is to do nothing. The number one thing our bodies are made to do naturally (that requires thinking) is to rest as soon as we get up, we are fighting nature tendencies ofthe body. It’s am atter fothe soul overcoming the bod; not allowing the body to control the soul.
Anyone on this forum who would rather take unemployment at $10/hr than work for $15/hr. Come-on, show of hands.
Keep those funds coming and I’ll take that in a heartbeat. Then again, I’ll also so something on the side to make even more money. Are you willing to pay my $10/hr for 40/hr /week? If so then I’ll be happy to accept it. Now, if you were to condition that I cannot work at all or make any extra money by my own efforts, then I would not accept the offer. My guess is that the person Hamous cited would be making a few bucks here and there while being “unemployed” and collect my money for doing nothing. You may think that’s benefiting him but I sure don’t.
Let’s tray another poll: number of folks here who would accept unemployment if they didn’t have to?
When I was on unemployment my check got docked according to how much my work at the time paid me. in other wods, I could have stayed home and collected just as much money had I not obtained a jobinthe first place. That was tempting but it would have been wrong. With the system we have, of course I’d want anyone here who became unemployed to accept unemployment the benefits they are entitled to but I do recall Hamous saying that we need to stop funding the unemployment benefits. He’s absolutely correct, it’s been way, way ,way, overdone.

#125 Super Dave
I hope your good fortune continues, more than 50% of bankruptcies occur as a result of someone getting ill.
I started washing dishes when I was 15 and joined the Navy when I was 17 in 1971. This was my first experience with unemployment. It did what the Texas government intended it to do – keep me in Texas.
And as another example of my unrepentant bad moral character, except for the oilfield work, I have always been on government contracts. In the Navy, on a FMS contract in Saudi Arabia, teaching sailors software programming and most recently NASA. Over thirty years on the public dole, dependent upon the government. Again, I make no apologies.
I don not understand your point about the house, I make more money on investments than I did if I bought the house. Merely a different financial strategy.
I’m interested in hearing about how Jimmy P killed general aviation, it’s an interesting cautionary tale. -

Great, another deadbeat 😉
Unemployment did what it was supposed to – keep us in Texas.Look, I ain’t making the argument that there isn’t abuse or freeloaders. How much abuse is acceptable before throwing the baby out with the bathwater?

We’re going to have to disagree, I really have bought into that Protestant work ethic malarky. Maybe it’s the yankee upbringing.
It’s simple physics, a body at rest in Green Bay freezes around the 15th of November, unless of course, it moves toTexasa warmer climate. 😉 -

At this rate, the babys are gonna be in the bathwater till their college years, then they’ll be fully groomed to join the Occu-Toddlers.

A British math teacher was convicted Monday of harassing his German neighbours with loud wartime music and Nazi salutes.
Wait a minute ……….. I saw this episode.
Most interesting quote from article
“I was not aware that among these matters were incidents where I was alleged to be racist and I was accused of Nazi abuse.”
Nazi abuse is illegal in Britain? I remember a time when it was part of our national duty.

Another wardrobe malfunction, apparently she lost her left ………. errr….. hubcap.
Alberta’s Wildrose party campaign bus is getting a re-do after the first version went viral Monday for its unintended display of leader Danielle Smith’s twin tire decolletage.

I suppose the government took away his concealed handgun license as well.

Warning:
This story is sophomoric and juvenile, but it does explain the long lines at some of the exercise machines.Since then, reports of so-called “coregasms,” named because of their seeming link to exercises for core abdominal muscles, have circulated in the media for years, according to the researchers.

Yes, I know it may be animal cruelty, but it may also qualify him to be the governor of Massachusetts.
Trucker Klaus Metzger, 41, is facing animal cruelty charges after he strapped a dog to the outside of his cab because he could not stand the smell of it breaking wind, say police in Switzerland.

Hamous;
Look, I ain’t making the argument that there isn’t abuse or freeloaders.
Which..is…what…Hamous’…post…was…about. That also goes to my point, you ignore the main point of posts to diatribe us into arguing with you and you use conservative ideals to pivot against others here in order to argue a liberal point of view.

Late good evening Hamsters. Brother-in-law and wife depart for Madison tomorrow morning–if we don’t have a frog strangler before spouse can get them to InterGalactic that is and United isn’t tied in knots over bad weather. It’s been a fun visit, though we’ve been on the go much more than usual. Don’t think we could keep up that pace for very many more days without a break.
Have been able to peek in at Hambone now and then. 🙂
G’night all. Stay safe and dry tomorrow.
