Friday “She Gets It” Open Comments

I know that there are some Beckophobes in the group, but I found this story on his web site and thought to myself “How does a young student get it and all those older, more intelligent ‘leaders’ don’t?”
Jada Williams read a book, took the time and effort to learn the vocabulary of what she was reading – and actually had some independent ideas! She didn’t just spout what was expected of her. She chastised the educational system and how it was failing her and her generation.

I now understood what had been to me a most perplexing difficulty- to wit, the white man’s power to enslave the black man…. From that moment, I understood the pathway from slavery to freedom. My thoughts: This type of thinking is somewhat still prevalent in our society today. Most white teachers that I have come into contact with, over the last several years of my life, have failed to instruct us even today….When I myself sit in crowded classrooms and no real concrete instruction is taking place. It makes that saying “history does repeat itself” all the more true. For white teachers to be able to be in a position of power to dictate what I can, cannot and will learn, only desiring that I may get bored because of the inconsistency and the mis-management of the classroom and remain illiterate and ignorant; or better yet distracted because some children decide to misbehave because they don’t understand, and ashamed to ask for help.
/snip
So, I feel like not much has changed, just different people, different era, the same old discrimination still resides in the hearts of the white man.

According to the interview, her teacher was upset that she was being “lumped in”. I don’t believe it’s just the white teachers; I believe it’s a class of teacher, not a race. I’ve met plenty of black educators who didn’t have their students’ best interests in mind. The teacher’s name was never mentioned, but obviously she must have believed that she was guilty of failing her students, as per Jada’s paper. Having my experiences with Handsome Son’s educational troubles, I fully understand the intimidation tactics they describe in the interview. Jada closes with these thoughts:

In closing, my suggestions to my peers, people of color, and my generation to try achieve what has been established by the African Americans and Abolitionists that paved the way for us to receive what’s rightfully yours. Blood, sweat, and tears have been shed for us to obtain any goals, which we may set for ourselves. Never being afraid to excel and achieve, because our ancestors have been bound for so, so, so, so, so long. We are free to learn, and my advice to my peers, people of color, and my generation- start making these white teachers accountable for instructing you. They chose this profession, they brag about their credentials; they brag about their tenure, so if you have so much experience, then find a more productive way to teach the so-called “unteachable”.
/snip
A grand price was paid in order for us to be where we are today; but in my mind we should be a lot further, so again I encourage the white teachers to instruct and I encourage my people to not just be a student, but become a learner.

If I remember correctly, it was Dr. Martin Luther King who believed that education was the pathway to empowerment for the black people. I believe it’s a pathway for ALL people, but I understand he had a specific focus group. I blame the educators whose fealty is to their bosses, union or otherwise, or to their puppetmasters, rather than to their students. They have created an ill-informed, or completely uninformed, populace from which certain political groups draw their power.
On my Wall of Wit and Wisdom, I have a two quotes:
“A nation under a well regulated government should permit none to remain uninstructed.
It is a monarchical and aristocratical government only that requires ignorance for its support.”
— Thomas Paine

“Dependence begets subservience and venality, suffocating the germ of virtue, and prepares fit tools for the designs of ambition. — Thomas Jefferson
Jada is understanding the first and well on her way to understanding the second. That makes her a danger to those who would prefer that she mute her intelligence.
You go, girl!

Since there is no longer any right or wrong, any black or white, and left or right, any good or evil, and so on, how could there ever be any education. What good is all the money we see being thrown at the educational system today? Like so much of the rest of our bloated government who sees its only job as stacking more and more new regulations on top of the old ones, it may be time to knock this house of cards down and start over. The fact that some individual was able to overcome all the obstacles placed in her path and learn to think for herself in spite of the system is to her credit.

Fisker is an electric car company (you KNOW what’s coming next, don’t you?) that recieved $529 million in stimulus funds and then built a plant in Finland. (I think Shamall is the only person in the country who actually GOT a stimulus job). Big buzz about thier fancy sports car (everybody in the world has been craving an electric sports car made in Finland). Big movie stars and singing sensationshave revcieved them as gifts. Consumer Reports got one to test.

DETROIT (Reuters) — A $100,000-plus Fisker Automotive luxury car died during Consumer Reports speed testing for reasons that are still unknown, leaving the struggling electric car startup with another blow to its image.

“It is a little disconcerting that you pay that amount of money for a car and it lasts basically 180 miles before going wrong,” David Champion, senior director for the magazine’s automotive test center, told Reuters.

    180 miles? Quicherbitchin. That’s like—four battery charges.

Well, I experienced a first last night – I finally got to see ZZ Top live in concert at the rodeo. They put on a pretty good show and played for about an hour, all of their top hits. It dawned on me that the newest one was probably around 20-25 years old, when you play the same songs for 25+ years you tend to get pretty good at it. Got to bed around midnight and up before 5 this am; needless to say I am doing the alligator impression today.

I blame the educators whose fealty is to their bosses, union or otherwise, or to their puppetmasters, rather than to their students.

The first real exposure the soon to be teacher gets on his/her way to earning credentials is the “publish or perish” rule in the university. The university profs are heavily pressured to publish or risk not gaining tenure, the focus is anything but teaching the students in the class room. In some universities, they have tenured profs who are paid big money to teach a couple of classes and usually a TA performs the task and the prof seldom darkens the doorway. The students are attracted to the university by the “renowned professor” but the professor doesn’t teach, he does research or writes books and the students get a bait and switch pulled on them. It seems that the business of education has lost its way and forgot how to actually educate instead of indoctrinate the students.
Perhaps this is part of the explanation of the growth of the home-school phenomenon.

From the OC block quote at the top.

They chose this profession, they brag about their credentials; they brag about their tenure, so if you have so much experience, then find a more productive way to teach the so-called “unteachable”.

Yes there are some really poor teachers out there, but I think the root of the educational morass lies at the feet of the parents. The next line is the key.

[snip] so again I encourage the white teachers to instruct and I encourage my people to not just be a student, but become a learner. [emphasis mine]

Sometimes there exists some truly intrinsically self motivated children that can rise up all on their own accord, however, the majority of their peers need a good kick in the pants from their parents. The parents need to start stressing the importance of education at a young age. All it takes is a couple of class clowns to make it extremely difficult for the teacher to do their job. I find it amazing that there is zero tolerance on some of the most innocuous and absurd things, yet the administrators are enfeebled when it comes to dealing with these clowns. I used the word enfeebled, but perhaps that is incorrect. Maybe it is purposeful.

#35 – I’ve always loved Marcia Ball – she epitomizes real musical SOUL (even if it’s Zydeco or Blues in the moment)

one of my faves – think I just posted it recently but timeless lyrics nonetheless:

Most music videos start with a highly produced studio track and then have a performer lip sync to that for endless takes. This project didn’t use that method. We didn’t even use a metronome.

Good afternoon Hamsters. Gloomy, windy, and misty start with 54 at 6, down to 52 at 1 pm and rain clouds moving closer. Wind has teeth today.

Thank you Tedtam, Katfish, Shannon, and Texanadian for the wildflower reports yesterday. Hoping for some sun next week to bring them out.

An unfortunate squirrel got hit by a car on the road that goes by the entrance to our subdivision. When I first saw it this morning, the remains were attended by maybe 5 vultures test pecking to see if it was suitable dining, and they hopped or flapped out of the way as I passed. On the return about 45 minutes later, the flock had grown to maybe 15, and the body had been moved to the opposite side of the road. The majority of vultures was perched on the backyard fence of a home overlooking the road, and the rest were still test pecking below. This yard is the domain of a small terrier and a small pet pig, and the pig was on patrol along the fenceline, looking up at the vultures perched above on the top rail. It looked for all the world as if the pig was sneering at them. 🙂

In Houston Friday evening, he will be dining with Democratic elected officials [in River Oaks] and some 60 well-heeled supporters from around the state who will have paid $38,500 for the privilege. The private event is sold out.

Wasn’t too long ago this was Scary Barry’s mantra:

It appears that the White House is adopting what is probably the most powerful slogan of Occupy Wall Street: “We are the 99%.”

That reference to the growing gap in income and wealth between the super-rich and the rest of us was invoked by a top administration spokesman during a press briefing Sunday about President Obama’s bus trip to Virginia and North Carolina. Politico reports:

She has a Weathernator 3000. Squack would end up freezing his own climates off with one of those. In the hands of a truly crazy wimmin such as say, edtamtay, a Weathernator 3000 could prolly whip up a cyclone that would send sheets of locusts raining from the heavens upon the heads of the heathen masses.

#38 Shannon and #39 GJT, The little piggy down the road is cute and not a computer-generated critter like the increasingly annoying Geico pig. It was amusing the first time around in the school carpool but has since lost it bigtime. The live piggy is small, not overweight, and plays with the small terrier who also lives there. They are cute to watch and are obviously friends. As for the vultures hanging around the deceased squirrel, about the nicest thing that can be said is only their mothers could love them.

I don’t know how they figured this one out. In my experience, you don’t get close to possums. One dang near took off my dog’s shoulder one time. I can’t imagine who was stupid enough to think “Let’s take this wild animal with the razor-sharp teeth, force a knitted sweater on it, and then put it on a snowboard and start it off down the mountain. Before we do that, let’s make sure our insurance is paid up and our wills are in place.”

Have I ever mentioned that I like possums and think they quite interesting, even attractive? Wouldn’t want one for a pet, but I believe if an orphan baby possum is raised in captivity, it grows up tame and trainable.

Orphaned baby possums do grow up to be interesting pets. They are no more trainable than cats but will eat roaches. Cats aren’t even good for that. Possums also like their escargot tartar and you can pick ’em up by the tail. Try that with a cat. They are not legal to keep as pets, or used to be, and finding a vet who will look the other way and treat them is a problem.
