A Hollywood dude who epitomized cool. One who I doubt would be out yapping about global warming or some smelt in an estuary somewhere.
More pics here. A few you wimmins will prolly like.

Gotta keep those wimmen folks happy – or at least I used to think that way. I finally figured out that if she wasn’t going to be happy there was nothing I could do to change that. Only problem is that it took about 20 years to figure it out.

Erick Erickson at Red State makes a defense of Rick Santorum.
The Drudge Report put up a story about Rick Santorum’s speech to Ave Maria University in which Santorum said Satan was attacking the United States. The speech was giving in 2008, but is largely consistent with statements he has given in the past few weeks.
I agree with Rick Santorum. I also think that this is a Romney leaked piece. Given the close ties between Matt Drudge and the Romney camp, that’s an easy guess. I also think it will hurt Santorum who apparently has Gingrichitis, a disease the frontrunners all seem to get where they mouth off on any topic under the sun once they are the front runner.
Focus on this topic does not help Santorum and is largely irrelevant to being President. Nonetheless, I feel compelled to defend Santorum given how clueless some of those attacking him seem to be on the specific points he made and also given the cluelessness of a lot of reporters trying to put his remarks in context or explain them.
Its very informative, particularly the part about who “Main Line protestants” are
But Santorum does a better job himself.
“‘I’m a person of faith. I believe in good and evil,’ Santorum said in response to questions from CNN…
“‘If somehow or another because you’re a person of faith and you believe in good and evil is a disqualifier for president, we’re going to have a very small pool of candidates who can run for president,’ Santorum said…

From the “breaker of wind” last night:
Last year the yard scrapped Vincennes, the cruiser that shot down a civilian Iranian Airliner based on self induced case of mistaken identity, one of the darker blots on the US Navy.
I recall that the airliner in question was radioed repeatedly to change course and they refused. Imagine the damage that airliner could have wreaked on the Vincennes or any other ship had it made a kamikaze move. The airliner may have been filled with innocent civilians, it was piloted by a jihadist. From the Iranian perspective, if the plane was not shot down, it takes out a ship and the blame is on the ship, if it is shot down Iran gets a PR victory – either way Iran wins. They consider the loss of their airplane and the civilians, a casualty of war; nothing to get upset about.
This, hopefully illustrates the difference in mindset between the west and the mid-east – the west views the above as abhorrent and totally unacceptable, mid-east simply views it as a tactic. -

There was yet another big shindig at the White House last night.
Full set list: “In Performance at The White House: Red, White and Blues”B.B King, Trombone Shorty, Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck, Mick Jagger, Shemekia Copeland, Susan Tedeschi, Gary Clark, Jr., Keb’ Mo’, Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes
I’m sure they all simply decided to show up and play for free. I wonder if anyone is actually keeping count of how many such “events” have taken place during 0’s term? What is the count for previous administrations?

I went and got my ashes this morning to begin my Lenten observance. The lady behind me was getting all stressed out because of the special occasion Catholics that showed up. They didn’t know how we line up for Communion and caused all kinds of confusion.
I gave her one of my comforting hugs to get her through it all.
McQueen – he’s great eye candy, and I like a man who’s a man. He’s of the pre-metrosexual era, God bless him.

There seems to be a general feeling of “under-whelm-ment” with respect to the 4 remaining R candidates. I think I understand why:
1) The LSM has been relentless in their one-sided, unfair, biased attacks against the Rs
2) The Rs have each been relentless in attacking each other instead of 0
3) Advertising works, that is why we are inundated with it. What was the line in 1984. . .’a thousand repetitions is a truth’? So if the LSM is determined to tell everyone how much the Rs suck and the R candidates are accusing each other of being “sucky” AND the LSM steadfastly refuses to even address even the most basic of 0’s flaws and questionable history, positions and ambitions, not to mention incredibly destructive decisions; what other conclusion can the lesser informed/interested draw other than ‘the Rs all suck?’ -

And, since Shamaal posted the quote about it being a “dark blot”, it also shows the mind set of the liberals vs conservatives. I’m sure Shammy didn’t mean to leave out the facts which you presented.
If I’m a plane, and I’m told by a ship with really, really big guns and manned by people who know how to use them to change course, I’d change course. Unless, of course, I’m trying to make a point with my death.

As you know, John Glenn is from Ohio. Did you know that the Wright brothers were also from Ohio as well as the first man on the moon Neil Armstrong? It sounds like people will do anything to get out of Ohio.

One candidate saying “he’s not this”… and another saying “well, you’re not this”…ad infinitum… Rick stayed on positive campaigning for a while, but now he’s down there with the rest of them…..
Both sides having humongous fights over free birth control pills for all…abortions for none…sonograms for all.. My feeling is that neither side should be in there. These issues are between the woman and spouse (if available),her God and the doctor. This is no place for outside meddling.

Wow.
Who would have seen this coming?
Senior sources said that the first official figures indicated that there had been “manoeuvring” by well-off Britons to avoid the new higher rate. The figures will add to pressure on the Coalition to drop the levy amid fears it is forcing entrepreneurs to relocate abroad.

TEHRAN (FNA)- The wife of Martyr Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan Behdast, who was assassinated by Mossad agents in Tehran in January, reiterated on Tuesday that her husband sought the annihilation of the Zionist regime wholeheartedly.
“Mostafa’s ultimate goal was the annihilation of Israel,” Fatemeh Bolouri Kashani told FNA on Tuesday.
Hey, wait a minute ! I thought the goal of the nuclear program in Iran was peaceful – you know, making electricity so Iranians can watch Ahmadinejad on TV walk around looking like Peter Falk in Columbo. Obviously, I was wrong.
But if you decide to devote yourself to a project focused on the mass murder of Jews, bad luck will find you, one way or another.

Any problem with folks like the lady at Tedtam’s church who had the vapors over “special occasion” Catholics showing up?
The way we process to receive Communion is a little different from most churches. We used to have traffic issues at the side aisles at our church, so one of our past pastors started a traffic pattern that starts at the side aisles, then moves from back to front of the center pews. Most churches start at the front and work their way back. So the E/Cers (Easter/Christmas Catholics) and the Ashes & Palms Group are unfamiliar with the normal flow. This causes a lot of confusion as people try to cut in line and stop and start the movement towards the sacrament. We’re happy they came, but it would be nice if they came more often, so as to be familiar with our customs.
One reason I didn’t want to attend tonight’s bilingual service is for the same reason, but on a much larger scale. We have a lot of Mexicans in our parish, many of whom only show up a few times a year, and I guess their cultural attitude towards orderly lines hasn’t changed. Last year their was a literal tidal wave of people rushing to receive ashes – no lines, no gracious gesturing for people to go before, nada. People were trying to maneuver themselves in front of others (so they could leave) and refused to surrender to any semblance of control. There was a cloud of people around the side aisle distributors of ashes, and I almost lost it.
Our pastors needs to manage the chaos, but they have never thought about describing the procedure and setting expectations before mass starts.

The contrarian scientists who signed the highly controversial “No Need to Worry About Global Warming” op-ed piece for the January 27, 2012 issue of the Wall Street Journal have now responded to their critics.
One might infer from the Trenberth letter that scientific facts are determined by majority vote. Some postmodern philosophers have made such claims. But scientific facts come from observations, experiments and careful analysis, not from the near-unanimous vote of some group of people.
The continued efforts of the climate establishment to eliminate “extreme views” can acquire a seriously threatening nature when efforts are directed at silencing scientific opposition. In our op-ed we mentioned the campaign circa 2003 to have Dr. Chris de Freitas removed not only from his position as editor of the journal Climate Research, but from his university job as well. Much of that campaign is documented in Climategate emails, where one of the signatories of the Trenberth et al. letter writes: “I believe that a boycott against publishing, reviewing for, or even citing articles from Climate Research [then edited by Dr. de Freitas] is certainly warranted, but perhaps the minimum action that should be taken.”

Our Whiskeypalian brethren are kicking it up a notch:
At St. Thomas Episcopal Church in College Station, Christians observe the start of Lent in a much more delicious way than most parishes: tacos.
“I’ll be at Fuego (near University and Texas in College Station) on Ash Wednesday doing an ‘ashes to go’ event from 10am to noon,” Montgomery announced on the church’s Facebook page. “Ashes, prayer, tacos…a winning combination (I know I know it’s a fast day, but dang those tacos are good!)”
Then there’s the Methodists (AKA Baptists who can read):
CINCINNATI (AP) — An Ohio church is offering a drive-thru Ash Wednesday blessing for parishioners who might be pressed for time.

There’s never any end to this insanity…
A new kind of outdoor advertisement is being tested on Oxford Street in London’s West End. The interactive advertisement uses a high-definition camera to scan pedestrians and identify their gender before showing a specific ad. The built-in system has a 90% accuracy rate in analyzing a person’s facial features and determining if they’re male or female.
The £30,000 display is set up by Plan UK, a not-for-profit organization that helps children in third-world countries. Female passersby will be shown the full 40-second video of its ‘Because I’m a Girl’ campaign that promotes sponsoring a girl to receive proper education in a developing country. Males won’t be able to see the full ad and will be directed to Plan UK’s website instead. The purpose of this was to show men “a glimpse of what it’s like to have basic choices taken away.”
The ad campaign will run for two weeks and hopes to raise quarter of a million pounds in donations during the next four months.

The old, traditional Lutheran Ash Wednesday and weekly, Wednesday night Lenten services were so meaningful. I used to be the Cantor occasionally. I loved the chanting and “high church” experience.
Now they turn it over to the Comfirmation kids.
It’s distracting. Atrocious.

The astounding selfishness of the charity putting up this display boggles the mind. They want to raise money to educate poor girls in the Third World, but are going to deny half the people passing by this ad the opportunity to participate.
They hope to raise 250,000 euros by showing it to women only, but will end up depriving the children who would benefit from raising 500,000 euros or more by allowing everyone to see the ad.
Words can’t describe how painfully stupid this is.

The old, traditional Lutheran Ash Wednesday and weekly, Wednesday night Lenten services were so meaningful. I used to be the Cantor occasionally. I loved the chanting and “high church” experience.
There’s always Holy Mother Church waiting for you with open arms.
Although there are still more than a few of the 60’s flower-child priests running around, but fortunately not many of them are pastors.

15 Oletimer,
I could not have expressed it better. None are talking about the deficit. Pro-Life and Pro-Choice rants are so much better…neither requires the hard choices of balancing a budget and possibly making someone mad.
Ron Paul is the only one talking about the deficit; too bad he is such a loon.

Seriously though, people getting up to get their licks in on some goober who tries to screw with operation of a flight does more for airline security than Janet Incompetano and all her TSA dolts put together.

“This brings us to what is fractured, which would be the previously sound relationship between the U.S. Government and religious entities that—for the past 230 years—have been considered efficient and helpful co-deliverers of social services beneficial to the public good, but are suddenly become public hindrances. On January 31, the administration amended the policies of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program: those working for church-related schools, or charities are no longer eligible. An administration-supporting associate informs me that the move “was showing sensitivity to the establishment clause.” As a similar explanation seems to lay behind the administrations refusal to allow the USCCB’s continued assistance in providing aid to victims of human trafficking, I suspect such “sensitivities” will soon render ineligible for federal loans those students attending church-related schools. One wonders if such a hyper “sensitivity” will eventually find religious interests ineligible to parade (or protest) on public streets.
This is of a piece with the administration’s unprecedented assault on First Amendment rights to freedom of religion and the exercise thereof, a move calculated, some believe, to eventually push the churches out of the public arena altogether and redefine freedom of religion as mere freedom of worship. That notion seems a great deal less paranoid than it did, even a week ago as, at a recent congressional hearing, Connecticut Rep. Rosa DeLauro appeared to suggest that religious liberty doesn’t extend beyond the right to worship.”

#4 and #12, regarding the Vincennes.
Let me know if a fact comes near.
The Vincennes was chasing Iranian gun boats and tracking 3 planes (including one that hadn’t taken off yet) and the combat crew chose behaviors from each that supported their paranoia. The final insult was believing an a civilian airliner that was ascending was actually descending despite the plots in the CIC and two other ships. The reports afterward referred to the skipper as “picking a fight.”It is a blot, the United States apologized and offered compensation. Naval professionals were upset that no one was held accountable, but hey, it was the Reagan administration.

Not sure about parties, but White House travel records confirmed MooChelle’s had sixteen vacations in three years.
I’m not sure why folks keep track, but it’s obviously important to you. President Bush went to Crawford 77 times. It got so bad near the end they’d invite foreign dignitaries to meet them there and call them “working vacations.”
Glad to have helped. -

You can listen to shameless’ cheap shots at the Reagan administration or you can read a rational analysis of the Vincennes/Iran Air FLT# 655 tragedy at the link and at least have a basic understanding of the difficulties of the rudimentary technology of the day.

I am intimately familiar with the story and use that paper along with the Achille Lauro sinking during HMI classes I teach. But it is interesting that the discussion is now shifting from some bogus meme about disregard for human life in Muslim countries to “the crew was a victim of the technology.” The facts are still as I represented them.
Nevertheless, the aircraft was ascending, was displayed realtime as ascending, was tracked by two other ships as ascending, yet the CIC called it out as descending. Not mentioned in the paper was the skipper’s other command issues. -

Speaking of facts:
President Obama signed an extension of the Obama tax cuts into law.
The $143 billion measure that Congress passed overwhelmingly on Friday continues the 2 percentage-point reduction in the tax that funds Social Security, a cut begun last year to aid the nation’s struggling economic recovery. It also extends jobless benefits for between 63 weeks and 73 weeks, and averts a big cut in the reimbursements doctors get for treating Medicare patients.

I don’t attribute every bad move of the US military in the last 3 years to Barack Obama, nor do I accept every dumb action of US command during 2001-2008 was the direct responsibility of the Bush administration. This isn’t about White House responsibility nor was it represented as such. This is conduct prejudicial to the service. When military commanders make bone-head decisions the military handles it. In my day it was the annual court-martial of the ensign who lost the DASH helicopter. The White House specifically interfered in military discipline, not just in this case but in the unfortunate incident in Beirut. In both cases military commissions made recommendations, and in both cases they were ignored. And yes folks were upset, as I stated.
As to your non-attribution of every “bad move of the US military in the last 3 years to Barack Obama ….” no representation was made that you did. And is non-germane to the discussion.

I don’t make gratuitous assertions about the influence of the Obama White House on military ops without evidence and I think yours are bullshit about Republican administrations. At the very best, they’re just your personal opinions.

How did the Commander of the USS Sides put it:
Cmdr. David R. Carlson, who commanded the frigate USS Sides in the Persian Gulf the day the Vincennes shot down the Iranian Airbus, wrote in the U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings magazine that the Vincennes had “no good reason” for shooting down the airliner.
Of course the topic didn’t come up when the skipper of the Vincennes was awarded the Legion of Merit.
But, that might be an isolated incident. Lets look at the Lebanon Bombing in Beirut.(a) The Commission is fully aware that the entire chain of command was heavily involved in the planning for, and support of, the USMNF. The Commission concludes, however, that USCINCEUR, CINCUSNAVEUR, COMSIXTHFLT and CTF 61 did not initiate actions to ensure the security of the USMNF in light of the deteriorating political/military situation in Lebanon. The Commission found a lack of effective and supervision of the USMNF security posture prior to 23 October 1983.
(b) The Commission concludes that the failure of the operational chain of command to correct or amend the defensive posture of the USMNF constituted tacit approval of the security measures and procedures in force at the BLT Headquarters building on 23 October 1983Again, no action taken.
Oh and the commander of the USS Stark that you mentioned?
Relieved of command and recommended for courts martial
Summary:
Shot at by an ally that was being supplied by the administration – Relieved of command and recommended for Courts Martial
Shoot down a commercial airliner that posed no threat – Legion of Merit
The Beirut results are well known -

I caught about 230 minutes of the debate before going off to my one year old cousin’s party. Romney seemd to do very well, Santorum, not so much, and then there wasa little fit over earmarks. First off, who cares that much considering the debt ofthe nation? Second off, stupid voters don’t have a clue and arguing over how to earmakr, what a good earmark is and a bad ear mark is, etc. will turn them off. Third, stick to the main issues. Fourth, let’s get some conservative moderators for these debates, please.
The party was good but now my rear lights, brake ligt included, are permanantly on. I’m gonna chec the manual to see if I can pull a fuse outwhen not driving and then pik up a new one tomorrow after work. The care’s still got about 83,000 miles to go before hitting the 300,000 mile mark which is when I prefer to trade it in.
