Well, the solar flare has erupted, and we are both cursed and blessed by the event:
Airlines have rerouted flights, NASA had some safety calculations to do, and satellite owners/operators chewed a few nails. But it’s scenes like this that make me wish I had a ticket to the northern climes.
Here’s a video of a similar event, from space.
I tried to include video from the International Space Station, but for some reason it wouldn’t let me embed the code or even copy the link. So you’ll have to search for it on your own. The astronaut narrating their feed had some interesting information regarding the colors and structure of the aurora, but that’s life, I suppose.
Enjoy the video.

Who are they trying to fool. Everybody knows that the aurora is really nothing more than our magnificent and beloved dear leader expressing his generosity by sharing his halo with the rest of the planet.

One of the reasons I like belonging to that hammock camping group is the fact that many of the members are talented amatuer videographers. This morning, I took a nice little trip to Mt. Rogers in Grayson Highlands State Park in Marion, Va.
Its amazing that these days, for a couple hundred dollars, people with talent have access to tools that allow them to do what only professionals working for motion picture companies could do just a decade or so ago.

For those who are interested, Byron York gives a thorough and fair report on the Gingrich Ethics case here. Keep in mind that York has previously written pieces critical of Gingrich and cannot be considered a supporter in any sense of the word.
The Gingrich case was driven in significant part by a man named Ben Jones. An actor and recovered alcoholic who became famous for playing the dim-witted Cooter in the popular 1980s TV show The Dukes of Hazzard, Jones ran for Congress as a Democrat from Georgia in 1988. He won and served two terms. He lost his bid for re-election after re-districting in 1992, and tried again with a run against Gingrich in 1994. Jones lost decisively, and after that, it is fair to say he became obsessed with bringing Gingrich down.
Two days before Election Day 1994, with defeat in sight, Jones hand-delivered a complaint to the House ethics committee (the complaint was printed on “Ben Jones for Congress” stationery). Jones asked the committee to investigate the college course, alleging that Gingrich “fabricated a ‘college course’ intended, in fact, to meet certain political, not educational, objectives.” Three weeks later, Jones sent the committee 450 pages of supporting documents obtained through the Georgia Open Records Act.
York later interviewed Jones.
There’s no doubt the complaint was rooted in the intense personal animus Jones felt toward Gingrich. In 1995, I sat down with Jones for a talk about Gingrich, and without provocation, Jones simply went off on the Speaker. “He’s just full of s–t,” Jones told me. “He is. I mean, the guy’s never done a damn thing, he’s never worked a day in his life, he’s never hit a lick at a snake. He’s just a bulls–t artist. I mean, think about it. What has this guy ever done in his life?…Gingrich has never worked. He’s never had any life experience. He’s very gifted in his way at a sort of rhetorical terrorism, and he’s gifted in his way at being a career politician, someone who understands how that system works and how to get ahead in it, which is everything that he has derided for all these years. So I think he’s a hypocrite, and I think he’s a wuss, and I don’t mind saying that to him or whoever. To his mother — I don’t care.”
Lets keep in mind here that this trenchant evaluation of Gingrich’s achievements was being made by a guyy who is most famous for playing “Cooter” on the Dukes of Hazard.

I think I have discovered why actors are usually so wissin liberal. The fact of the matter is that they have no moorings, no foundations and they spend their entire careers pretending to be something which they are not. Because they work so diligently at deception (acting is deception by definition) they usually fall for the deception of socialism/collectivism. A liar gets a spirit of lying on them and therefore they are prone to believe lies and reject the truth.

HEADLINE: Pelosi On A Gingrich Presidency: “That Will Never Happen”
OK, so please tell us why.
Pelosi: “He’s not going to be President of the United States. That’s not going to happen. Let me just make my prediction and stand by it, it isn’t going to happen.”
King: “Why are you so sure?”
Pelosi: “There is something I know. The Republicans, if they choose to nominate him that’s their prerogative. I don’t even think that’s going to happen.”
Isn’t she so gracious, she is going to allow the Rs to pick whomever they wish. What is it that she “knows”, how to apply cosmetics, how to conduct insider trading based on congressional info not available to the public, how to lie about being spit upon during one of her victory marches, how to lie in the general sense, how she and the Ds fabricated an ethics complaint against Newt?? Please tell us Nanzi, what exactly do you know?

15 questions you will never hear Obamaniation asked.
5) When you took office, gas was $1.79 per gallon. Since then, you’ve demonized the oil industry, dramatically slowed offshore drilling, blocked ANWR, and killed the Keystone Pipeline. Now, gas is $3.34 per gallon. How much higher do you anticipate driving gas prices?

Newt responds to Nanzi’s not-so-veiled threat:
“I have a simple challenge for Speaker Pelosi…you know, put up or shut up. I mean, I have no idea what she’s talking about. I don’t think she has any idea what she’s talking about, but bring it on,” he said.
“My life has been looked at by lots of people and I’ve been around a long time. And I just think that when you are a left-wing Democrat, the prospect of a Gingrich presidency is really sort of like a nightmare,” Mr. Gingrich added.

Well, this is a barometer of our government: Citizens becoming non-citizens in growing numbers.
According to National Taxpayer Advocate Nina E. Olson, approximately 4,000 people gave up their citizenship from fiscal year 2005 to FY 2010. Renunciations increased sharply within the past three years, from 146 in FY 2008 to 1,534 in FY 2010. And during the first two quarters of FY 2011 alone, 1,024 Americans ditched their citizenship.
First the corporations leave, and now the citizenry.
That whirring sound you hear? It’s the Founding Fathers spinning in their graves.

From the British paper The Telegraph we have this story:
HEADLINE:Fried food heart risk ‘a myth’
It is a “myth” that regularly eating fried foods causes heart attacks, researchers have found, as long as you use olive oil or sunflower oil.The studies really do not support the fried food/heart disease connection. Down in the comments section it get kind of interesting as cholesterol and statins are discussed.
One of the things that is known but ignored is that our own bodies produce 90-95% of our systemic cholesterol while only 5% or so comes from heavily cholesterol laden foods. the natural question should be “why is the body producing the cholesterol?” and what is the purpose of the cholesterol in a “normal” body?
The answer is that the body produces cholesterol as a response to systemic inflammation. The cholesterol represents firemen at the scene of a fire; removing the firemen is not going to treat the cause of their arrival and is risky at best. The issue is diet; our diet contains too much sugar, highly processes grains (white flour and polished white rice) and we tend to consume too much alcohol while at the same time consuming too little wild sourced foods, like wild fish or venison or grass fed beef. This diet issue causes a rise in a substance called arachidonic acid in the body. A diet high in wild fish (farm raised fish are fed grain and the omega 3 fatty acids are not present in the same quantity and quality as wild) and wild meat and fresh fruits and veggies will make the body have lower arachidonic acid levels which will lower the systemic inflammation which will lower the systemic cholesterol levels without the damaging effects of the statins.
When the arachidonic acid to omega 3 ratio is closer to 1:1 systemically your health will soar, many people whose ratio is more like 40:1 have cancer and alzheimers and heart disease; I think the average American is closer to 12:1. Buy a fish oil supplement and take a bunch preferably morning and evening, fish oil omega 3 is the only one that can cross the blood/brain barrier and actually nourish your brain. This articlespeaks about systemic inflammation but it trashes fatty red meat, if the beef is grass fed (that means no feed lot fattening) or wild game it is really good for you. -

I guess someone got tired of the problem. I know that I’d like to walk in my neighborhood more, but we seem to get a large number of “dump dogs” here, and more than one of them is a pit, which I absolutely do not trust. Animal control won’t come out unless you have them trapped. Our backyard neighbor has a stray pit that likes to sleep on their porch, and can get aggressive if they come out while it’s there. They’ve been trying to get animal control out for a coupla years now.
He used to be a bailiff, I’m pretty sure he has a gun. If a stray was aggressively coming at me, I think I’d have the gun with me for protection. Maybe he’s a big animal lover, or maybe they’re making friends with it.

She ought to be a Texan (another link from Drudge):
Moments later, she said she saw Willis run into her backyard and try to scale her fence. Granville grabbed her .38 Special revolver and followed him.
“My adrenaline was just flowing at 100 mph,” she said. “I just said, ‘Stop right there (expletive), or you’re going to be dead where you stand.”
Granville held the man at gunpoint until police arrived.
… she had to drink a glass of wine after the incident to calm her nerves.
Yeah, I’ll bet.

#27 TT: Flaxseed oil is fine, olive oil is better. Start taking the fish oil capsules and preferably twice a day. You will get more benefit taking one in the morning and one at night than you will 2 in the morning. I take 3 grams of fish oil, plus C complex, B complex, 10000 units of D3, mornings and evenings.

Good morning Hamsters. Monsoon Deux has just arrived here at 10:10, dropping out of a purple/gray sky. The weather folks tell us to expect heavy rain in the next hour(s) as more is pulled up from the Gulf by that very strong low pressure in SE Texas. Thunder rumbles in the not too far distance and slightly shakes the ground. The strong wind gusts of last night are gone. Static on the radio is continuous. Horses are tucked in the barn, hatches battened down, spouse is telecommuting today, and I guess that about takes care of things here.
Happy Birthday mharper42 and many more. Stay safe and then go out for dinner once this mess passes.

TT: Did you finally get some rest last night; you know like in bed before 9pm and not out before 6am?
Nope. To be about 1:00 am, up at 7:50 am. Didn’t sleep well. I was still awake to hear thunder between 1:30 and 2:00 am. Must have drifted off fitfully sometime after 2:00 am. I remember waking up several times. Hubby’s alarm went off at 5:30 am. I hit the snooze button the first time, managed to turn off the alarm the second time. After that, I was too awake to sleep well. I think I got about a half hour around 7:00 am.
I’m surprised at how perky I am. Must have slept very fast.
I see a nap in my future.

On a brighter note, I’m close to rewarding myself with a massage for reaching a personal goal. There’s a massage college who’s students need some practice. At this point, I don’t need a professional massage therapist; I’ll take a bumbling student and I’ll still feel better.

Willis was charged with fleeing and eluding law enforcement, driving with a suspended license, use of a vehicle to commit a felony, possession of marijuana, possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute. He was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail on Tuesday and released after posting $7,500 bail.
Does anyone other than me see a real problem with the bold sections? Why was this slime-ball let out of jail at all, let alone on a measly $7500?? They should have added at least a zero to the bail amount.

Perhaps one day, pretty much no one will work and we can just force a few selfish, workaholic rich people to pay for everything.
A good analogy for the rich is a pinata. You just keep whacking them and they drop treats for all of us forever and ever. Like a pinata. Yet this could all be ruined by the crazy people out there who want to shrink government, and thus reduce its ability to care for us.This is a pretty good example of satire.

Puddles forming everywhere, but at least no wind to blow water under covered areas. Lightning flashes and thunder punctuates every so often and shakes things closer now. Rain pounds stratight down in Texas-sized drops, gutters overflow and become waterfalls, the digital rain gauge just flipped over to 1.04″, but that has to be less than what’s in the plastic one on the paddock fence. Sooo glad we got the culverts cleaned out on Sunday on the road behind our pastures, ’cause if this keeps up very long we shall be a lake again with house and barn islands. The weather folks said there would be training of the storms coming up from the Gulf. The train is here….
Gauge reads 1.29 now.

Making my rounds in Northeast Washington County there is heavy tree damage, many blocking roads.
Northwest Washington County apparently had the worst of it – roofs lost, out buildings blown away, severe tree damage.
A co-worker from the Lomg Point area had a stack of steel for a soon to be erected barn held down with ten railroad ties. That steel is now strewn for several miles across highways and neighbors’ pastures.
70 mph winds were measured at Brenham Airport in South Washington County. -

We’re getting heavy rain here in NW Houston. I was at an Arbor Day ceremony earlier this week and the timing is perfect for a good soaking rain on those newly planted trees. They’re well mulched so their fill dirt shouldn’t wash out. Shame I didn’t have my own plantings ready in time. I am still prepping the spots to put in 2 new trees. Still, this rain will be good for my mature trees. I’ve started watering them once a week when it doesn’t rain at all. Thanks for the birthday wishes — I would not get out in this weather for anything short of needing open heart surgery!

Tonight’s class is on “Sin & Virtue”. This is always interesting, as the students always ask questions like “If I hold my right arm over my head before I make an incomplete confession because I forgot something I did when I was three, and hopscotch out the door after my penance, then run into the street and get hit by a car, will I go to Heaven or Hell?”
The patience of Job, I have.
Although my web search on the concept of Purgatory has turned up a few interesting tidbits. I went from there to a page on demonic visitation, which brought back a real scary night for me. I don’t think I can share much of that information with the students.

2.6″ in my rain gauge, and hardly any standing water left in sight, so most of it is on its way back to the Gulf already. I’m with Adee, I’d rather have it more spread out, but I’ll happily take what we got today.

Happy Birfday Mz mharper42!!
Well the storm finished rolling thru this neck of the woods round about 10:30 or so and left us with almost 4 inches in the gauge. WHOOP.!! WHOOP !! the tanks are near full. When I left to go to town my lower pastures looked like a lake had set in for a long stayover. Upon my return, alas, most of it had run the creeks to the San Bernard and off to the Colorado and points south headed for the Gulf. And yes, the tanks are successfully holding back their wonderful abundance of the wet stuff. Kritters, including the fishes, are doing the “happy dance”
UPDATE: It’s official … the front gauge reads 4.1 inches and it’s starting to mist again. Bring it on!!

Prediction: When the convention comes around there will not be a current contender with 50%+1 delegates. The first ballot will not produce 50%+1 votes for anyone, at that point all delegates are released from their pledge and the process is blown wide open. There is no telling who our nominee will be and he/she may not be among those currently running.

Sorry if this was posted already but I read this earlier and just heard it referenced on Hewitt. I went to Drudge and it’s the top headline so I thought I’d post it now before it dies down. Yesterday Shannon posted a great article whic hshowed Gingrich as Reagan’s lieutenant. This article makes me wonder if there’s another side to Newt being Reagan’s commanding soldier.
Gingrich and Reagan: In the 1980s, the candidate repeatedly insulted the president. By elliot Abrams.
In the increasingly rough Republican campaign, no candidate has wrapped himself in the mantle of Ronald Reagan more often than Newt Gingrich. “I worked with President Reagan to change things in Washington,” “we helped defeat the Soviet empire,” and “I helped lead the effort to defeat Communism in the Congress” are typical claims by the former speaker of the House.
The claims are misleading at best. As a new member of Congress in the Reagan years — and I was an assistant secretary of state — Mr. Gingrich voted with the president regularly, but equally often spewed insulting rhetoric at Reagan, his top aides, and his policies to defeat Communism. Gingrich was voluble and certain in predicting that Reagan’s policies would fail, and in all of this he was dead wrong.
On attacking Reagan poignantly:
The best examples come from a famous floor statement Gingrich made on March 21, 1986. This was right in the middle of the fight over funding for the Nicaraguan contras; the money had been cut off by Congress in 1985, though Reagan got $100 million for this cause in 1986. Here is Gingrich: “Measured against the scale and momentum of the Soviet empire’s challenge, the Reagan administration has failed, is failing, and without a dramatic change in strategy will continue to fail. . . . President Reagan is clearly failing.” Why? This was due partly to “his administration’s weak policies, which are inadequate and will ultimately fail”; partly to CIA, State, and Defense, which “have no strategies to defeat the empire.” But of course “the burden of this failure frankly must be placed first on President Reagan.” Our efforts against the Communists in the Third World were “pathetically incompetent,” so those anti-Communist members of Congress who questioned the $100 million Reagan sought for the Nicaraguan “contra” rebels “are fundamentally right.” Such was Gingrich’s faith in President Reagan that in 1985, he called Reagan’s meeting with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev “the most dangerous summit for the West since Adolf Hitler met with Neville Chamberlain in 1938 in Munich.”
Yikes. I sure hope Newt meant that meeting with Gorbachev was *potentionally* dangerous “since Adolf Hitler met with Neville Chamberlain in 1938 in Munich”. Chamberlain sought appeasement; Reagan sought absolute victory through strength.
The second point to make is that Gingrich made these assaults on the Reagan administration just as Democratic attacks were heating up unmercifully. Far from becoming a reliable voice for Reagan policy and the struggle against the Soviets, Gingrich took on Reagan and his administration. It appears to be a habit: He did the same to George W. Bush when Bush was making the toughest and most controversial decision of his presidency — the surge in Iraq. Bush was opposed by many of the top generals, by some Republican leaders who feared the surge would hurt in the 2008 elections, and of course by a slew of Democrats and media commentators. Here again Gingrich provided no support for his party’s embattled president, testifying as a private citizen in 2007 that the strategy was “inadequate,” contained “breathtaking” gaps, lacked “synergism” (whatever that means), and was “very disappointing.” What did Gingrich propose? Among other things, a 50 percent increase in the budget of the State Department.
To be fair, I do believe I heard Hewitt say that Elliot Abrams is on Team Romney and his criticisms against Romney are focused on foreign policy whereas Shannon’s post was focused on Gingrich’s domestic successes. But one other point here is that Abrams “was an assistant secretary of state in the Reagan Administration and deputy national security adviser in the George W. Bush Administration”. This goes to Hewitt’s question as to why do so many people who knew Gingrich intimately not like him and so few come out an defend him? Romney has over 70 congressional endorsements and Gingrich 11.

Another Bush crony who is also working for the Romney campaign is crticizing Gingrich?
Well, I guess we have no reason to doubt him—–
Tom Delay came in to Micheal Berry’s show tonight and criticized Gingrich as well. Yep, this Tom Delay.
Perhaps Hewitt is not listening to everybody who knew and worked with Newt.
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Former Rep. J.C. Watts, who was one of the top leaders in the Congress in the 1990s and is one of the most famous black Republicans in the country, repeatedly praised former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in a speech here on Thursday.
“I’m going to do everything within my power to see to it that it’s Newt Gingrich,” Watts said of the GOP nomination process at the conference for the Southern Republican Leadership Conference.
J.C. Watts is a true Conservative hero and served on the ethics committee that investigated Newt. If anyone knows all the skeletons that Granny Rictus McBotox claims to know, its J.C. Watts.
Atlanta, GA – Former Iowa Congressman Fred Grandy today announced his endorsement of Newt Gingrich for President of the United States.
“I am proud to support Newt’s campaign for president,” Grandy said today. “I believe that his optimistic, solutions-oriented message is resonating well with the people of Iowa and with all Americans.
“As someone who worked with Newt while in Congress, I also am saddened to see some of his former colleagues attack his leadership style. Newt’s leadership is the major reason Republicans won control of Congress in 1994 and enjoy a majority today. I believe that Newt is the best candidate to unite our party as we seek to unseat Barack Obama next year.”
There are others if Hewitt would just do a simple Google search.

DarrenHindsight being 20/20 and all, it looks pretty silly for Newt to have been critical of Reagon’s policies fighting communism. Take note, Newt was to the right of Reagon if these accusations are true. Not a good thing for the Romney camp to bring out if we are trying to find out who is the most conservative of our nominee choices.

John Tyler was born in 1790. He became the 10th president of the United States in 1841 after William Henry Harrison died in office. Tyler fathered Lyon Gardiner Tyler in 1853, at age 63. Then, at the age of 71, Lyon Gardiner Tyler fathered Lyon Gardiner Tyler Jr. in 1924 and four years later at age 75, Harrison Ruffin Tyler. Both men are still alive today.

If I take yer drift, you are glad the woman’s car is apparently being damaged by reflected sunlight? If so, that’s not very compassionate. Sure, there is some irony with dueling greenie-weenie crapola, but bottom line is, the car was being damaged. -

Schadenfreude is not the same as irony. It means taking joy at the pain of others. I really don’t care what kind of car people want to drive, but there is a liability issue if someone else is damaging it.

I always find it amusing to discuss sin with my class. We discussed the nature of sin, why it’s bad, how individual sin contributes to social sin, the differences between mortal and venial sin, the consequences/punishment for sin…and then it began.
“Is birth control a sin?” When I said yes, in the eyes of the Catholic Church, about half the class emitted a synchronized gasp. Looks went in all directions and a few heads started bobbing. I dipped briefly into the Catholic view on sexuality and moved on.
“Is xxxx a sin?” I said yes, and a few more gasps. This happened a few more times. I prevented it from getting into a detailed nitpicking session, but I didn’t hold back any answers, either. They are so transparent.
And a little frightening.

I don’t have but about 15 mins of radio time in the morning, so Joe Pags is fine for that. I would listen to Rush but I’m rarely able to from 11-2. I care who’s on 2-5 because I can usually start listening during that shift. Then 10pm till ZZZZZ is important to me. Hugh Hewitt is the best I can find right now. I think Dennis Miller is on then too, but he’s telling show biz jokes while the bow of the Titanic is lifting up out of the water.

Pretty good publicity if you want to attract thrill seekers.
Following a test run of the of the UK’s newest rollercoaster, due to open in just 49 days, some of the test dummies were left ‘alarmingly’ damaged following collisions with some of the rides ‘extreme “near miss” spots’.
The theme park, located in Surrey, have confirmed ‘drastic measures’ have been taken to amend the problems after an emergency response team were called out to fix the ride.
Some of the mannequins were left without any arms or legs following the hell-raising ride which promises to leave thrill-seekers ‘exposed and vulnerable to the extreme near misses and gut-wrenching inversions as it rips through the sky on its mission of complete annihilation.’ -

Hewitt did not say “everybody” but clearly those who knew Gingrich personally are heavily slanted to not liking him.
Norm Coleman: Read Romney campaign response citing Ramesh Ponnoruu. I didn’t want to take this to a “hey, look at all the conservatives supporting Romney” level but that seems to be where you want to take it. There’ strong concervatives supporting Romney and theyr’s strong conservatives supporting Newt. The best of luck to both of them. For future reference, please note I made the disclaimer of Abrams being on Team Romney. I’m all in for Romney but I want to be open about my sources. And if your do not like Delay or McCain I do not see how Newt will better them overall.
Still, bakc to point, those who knew Newt do not seem to like him. There are exceptions of course but by and large they don’t seem to.

Mitt Romney is rich; this much we know.
But would he be the richest president ever?
In terms of raw dollars, yes. If you adjust for inflation, though, the answer is no.
In fact, the wealthiest president appears to have been one of the nation’s most beloved Commanders in Chief and the nation’s first president, George Washington.
Multiple studies have estimated Washington’s net worth, in today’s dollars, at more than $500 million, due in large part to his Virginia plantation at Mount Vernon being so vast and so fertile.
Gee, that’s not fair. 😉

Take note, Newt was to the right of Reagon if these accusations are true. Not a good thing for the Romney camp to bring out if we are trying to find out who is the most conservative of our nominee choices.
He may have been to the right of Reagan but incorrect nonetheless. I will agree that focusing only on Newt’s view foreign policy does not present an accurate picture of Newt. I can make anyone look bad just by focusing on what they did bad. But I do think this is a justifiable point on Newt to bring out. I find Romney’s foreign policy much in line with Reagan’s. In the case of Lebanon, perhaps even better.

I can make anyone look bad just by focusing on what they did bad. But I do think this is a justifiable point on Newt to bring out. I find Romney’s foreign policy much in line with Reagan’s. In the case of Lebanon, perhaps even better.
