Nope, I don’t drink, I just work ungodly hours. I’ve been pushing into the wee hours now for several weeks, and the strain has caught up with me. I have a meeting I attend every Monday night, and I had the hardest time staying awake. Driving tends to perk me up, but when I got home I could barely stand. Walking upstairs was a challenge, as was getting to the bathroom and back. I think it took all of five seconds (maybe) for me to fall asleep when my head hit the pillow. I didn’t even hear Hubby’s alarm clock, nor did I wake up when he turned on lights and went through his morning routine. I could probably use another five hours of sleep.
I woke up late this morning, and I feel hung over. My head still isn’t right, and my eyes are having a hard time focusing. But the first thing I did after my morning ablutions was to look and see if the Couch was open.
Egads! My friends left out in the cold! So I stumble to the door, unlock it, and welcome you all in. Please pardon me while I get my breakfast and inject some caffeine. Another day begins.

Good Morning All
My head still isn’t right.
I notice that this is a stand alone sentence, thus not requiring any explanations or excuses.
🙂
(Sorry, I just couldn’t resist) I promise to go light on you the rest of the morning.

Take your sweetheart to Starbucks for Valentine’s Day.
An anti-gun group is attempting to organize a nationwide Valentine’s Day boycott of Starbucks over the coffee chain’s gun policy.
Starbucks does not ban guns in its stores; rather, it defers to local laws. The National Gun Victim’s Action Council (NGAC) says that amounts to a pro-gun policy that endangers customers.
“Starbucks allowing guns to be carried in thousands of their stores significantly increases everyone’s risk of being a victim of gun violence,” NGAC CEO Elliot Fineman said in a news release. “Open and conceal and carry are among the reasons there are 12,000 gun homicides each year in the U.S. If we had England’s gun laws we would expect 375 gun homicides each year—97% less than we have. England’s gun laws are based on protecting public safety, ours on maximizing sales for the gun industry.”
The Starbucks policy hit the headlines in 2010 when gun owners decided to exercise their rights at national chains. Many responded by banning guns, but Starbucks refused. At the time Starbucks explained:
While we deeply respect the views of all our customers, Starbucks long-standing approach to this issue remains unchanged. We comply with local laws and statutes in all the communities we serve. That means we abide by the laws that permit open carry in 43 U.S. states. Where these laws don’t exist, openly carrying weapons in our stores is prohibited. The political, policy and legal debates around these issues belong in the legislatures and courts, not in our stores.
But NGAC’s Fineman said it is just a bad policy, and hopes its boycott can change it.
“Starbucks steadfast support of the NRA’s lethal pro-gun agenda damages its ‘socially conscious company’ brand,” he said.

And why would one want a gun in a restaurant? Here’s one reason.
Spartanburg, S.C. (CNN) – A customer at a South Carolina restaurant took matters into his own hands when two men tried to rob the place.
It happened early Saturday morning at this Waffle House in Spartanburg.
Authorities say two masked men came in and ordered the customers to the floor and the employees to a back room.
One of the customers had a concealed weapon.
He reportedly pulled out his gun and told the two men to wait for cops to show up.
Sheriff’s say the suspected robber, a 19-year-old, then turned his gun toward the diner.
That’s when the customer shot and killed him.
“From all the witnesses…that wasn’t his first reaction was to grab the gun and start shooting. He absolutely tried to make them stop and he would have been just fine waiting for us to get there and arrest these two guys,” says Sheriff Chuck Wright.
The second suspected robber got away, but was caught by authorities later that night.
Sheriff’s say the customer who fired the shot will not face any charges because he was acting in self defense.

Rand Paul’s statement at being detained by TSA:
I was detained by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for not agreeing to a patdown after an irregularity was found in my full body scan. Despite removing my belt, glasses, wallet and shoes, the scanner and TSA also wanted my dignity. I refused.
I showed them the potentially offending part of my body, my leg. They were not interested. They wanted to touch me and to pat me down. I requested to be rescanned. They refused and detained me in a 10-foot-by-10-foot area reserved for potential terrorists.
My detention was real and I was repeatedly instructed not to leave the holding area. When I used my phone to inform my office that I would miss my flight, and thus miss my speech to the March for Life, I was told that now I would be subjected to a full body patdown.
I asked if I could simply restart the screening process to show that the machine had made an error. I was denied and informed that since I used my phone, to call for help, I must now submit or not fly.
Finally, the airport head of TSA arrived after I had missed my flight. He let me go back through the scanner and this time the scanner did not go off. The only comment from TSA was that some of the alarms are simply random. So passengers who do everything right, remove their belts, remove their wallets, remove their shoes, their glasses and all of the contents in their pockets are then subjected to random patdowns and tricked into believing that the scanners actually detected something.
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/jan/23/tsas-intrusions-undermine-security/
Yestersday’s explanation from Big Sis and gang. Notice they say they must pat “resolve” all irregularities” Now that Rand has been told that the have random alarms, and it seems to be true since his second trip thru did not alarm, What will Big Sis say in response? Her only choices now seem to be that they do random alarms or their equipment is shoddy and not dependable.
TSA has defended its treatment of Rand Paul, saying that its employees in Nashville followed its normal procedure with the senator, who has often sharply criticized the agency’s pat-downs before he refused one Monday morning.
“When an irregularity is found during the TSA screening process, it must be resolved prior to allowing a passenger to proceed to the secure area of the airport,” the agency said Monday in a written statement. “Passengers who refuse to complete the screening process cannot be granted access to the secure area in order to ensure the safety of others traveling.”

#6 OTL: The “issue” could and should have easily and quickly been resolved by simply allowing him to be re-scanned. Because this most reasonable of actions was not taken, one can only conclude that simply passing the scan was not the objective of the TSA. This is clearly but one more log on the pyre of abuses that the TSA has committed and let’s not forget a couple of weeks ago where they stripped searched a couple of 80+ year old wimminzes in 2 different airports. This agency, along with the entire Fed system is completely out of control and drastic action is needed to jerk the jerks back in line. I seriously doubt that the Romneyrroid has the stones to take that kind of drastic action; at the same time, I seriously doubt that the Noootskie will hestitate. Neither Rick nor Ron will be a presidential factor in all probability that makes the choice for me much easier.

Crony capitalism at its worst under JugEars.
HEADLINE: Buffett’s Burlington Northern Among Winners From Keystone Denial
Warren Buffett’s Burlington Northern Santa Fe LLC is among U.S. and Canadian railroads that stand to benefit from the Obama administration’s decision to reject TransCanada Corp. (TRP)’s Keystone XL oil pipeline permit.
With modest expansion, railroads can handle all new oil produced in western Canada through 2030, according to an analysis of the Keystone proposal by the U.S. State Department.
“Whatever people bring to us, we’re ready to haul,” Krista York-Wooley, a spokeswoman for Burlington Northern, a unit of Buffett’s Omaha, Nebraska-based Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK/A), said in an interview. If Keystone XL “doesn’t happen, we’re here to haul.”
/SNIP
Shipping oil using tank cars on rail costs about $3 more a barrel than pipeline transport, using prices in North Dakota, a differential “unlikely” to slow the development of oil sands crude if no pipeline is build, the State Department said. The gap is shrinking as larger storage terminals are built, the agency said.So it cost $3.00 more per bbl to ship via rail than pipe and Warren Buffet is long on railroads and long on JugEars access, and we are supposed to think that nothing out of the ordinary is going on.. . . . . .hmmm. What do you think will happen to that price when the Canadian tar sands kick into high gear and there is a dramatically increased demand for tank cars? Would a reasonably prudent person with a bare minimum of economics education assume that the price will go down, stay the same or go up when demand increases and supply lags behind?
Let’s not forget about this little tidbit from the article:The rail option, though costlier, would lessen the environmental impact, such as a loss of wetlands and agricultural productivity, compared to the pipeline, according to the State Department analysis. Greenhouse gas emmissions, however, would be worse.
What happens to the sacred environment when a derailment happens and those tank cars rupture and spill that foul substance on the pristine prairie?? Isn’t is well known that the safest, most economical way to ship liquids is via pipeline? Let’s not forget that using rail involves burning diesel fuel and that contributes to gore-bull warming right, oh, wait, I forgot, its OK when the Ds are running the show but ifn an R wanted to do it it would cause at least a 10degree increase in the mean global temps.

A bit of interesting news from our northern neighbors courtesy of
http://mjperry.blogspot.com/From Fargo ND radio station KFGO:
A meeting was held of the North Dakota Sheriffs & Deputies Association in Bismarck, and as part of this meeting we had an opportunity to sit down with law enforcement officials from western ND to discuss what they are going through with the oil impact. Here are some oil issues from western North Dakota.
MP: There are 35 in total, these are my “Top 12” issues facing a community where the economy is booming, the jobless rate is less than 1%, and there are bound to be some “growing pains.”
1. Traffic accidents, especially fatal traffic accidents are of very high concern. At one location on Highway 85 south of Williston, a traffic count was conducted in October of 2011. In one 24-hour period there where 29,000 vehicles through the intersection, with 60% of the traffic being semi trailer trucks.
2. Traffic is typically backed up for ½ to ¾ of a mile. One person stated that he recently sat at an intersection on Highway 85 for 30 minutes waiting for an opening in the traffic to cross over.
3. Rents in Williston currently range from $2,000 for a one-bedroom apartment to $3,400 for a three-bedroom apartment.
4. Williams County allows three campers per farmstead, the farmers almost all have three campers on their property and are charging $800 per camper per month for rent.
5. The Walmart in Williston no longer stocks shelves, they bring out pallets of merchandise at night, and set them in the aisles, and customer shops from the pallets.
6. On January 1, the Williston Walmart had 148 campers overnight in their parking lot.
7. The Williston McDonalds just announced that they will pay new workers $15 an hour, a $500 immediate signing bonus and full medical benefits.
8. The local restaurants are full and with limited staffing, they usually just have the drive through open. The restaurants that have inside seating are now experiencing an hour wait at all times.
9. The local Motel 6 in Williston now rents rooms for $130 per night.
10. Trinity Hospital in Minot has just hired 115 nurses from the Philippines, because they cannot get enough local nurses to apply.
11. The Williston General Motors dealership has now become the No. 1 seller of Corvettes in the upper Midwest.
12. The Williams County jail has increased bookings by 150%, with a 100% increase in the inmate population. Bonds of $5,000 to $10,000 are typically paid with cash out of pocket. The Williams County Sheriff stated that a couple of weeks ago he received a $63,000 bond in cash carried into the jail in a plastic Walmart bag.

I state that to call any of that crapola “fashion or beautiful” is to seriously mis-use the words. I will grant that to use the word “Daring” to describe that may be close as in “daring to call it fashion.” Perhaps if daring is simply a code word in the “fashion” industry for “really stoopid crap”, then it all kind of makes sense.

This is the operative section of the linked article that should be able to trigger RICO statutes:
The collective-bargaining component of Walker’s plan has yielded especially large financial dividends for school districts. Before the reform, many districts’ annual union contracts required them to buy health insurance from WEA Trust, a nonprofit affiliated with the state’s largest teachers’ union. Once the reform limited collective bargaining to wage negotiations, districts could eliminate that requirement from their contracts and start bidding for health care on the open market. When the Appleton School District put its health-insurance contract up for bid, for instance, WEA Trust suddenly lowered its rates and promised to match any competitor’s price. Appleton will save $3 million during the current school year.
Appleton isn’t alone. According to a report by the MacIver Institute, as of September 1, “at least 25 school districts in the Badger State had reported switching health care providers/plans or opening insurance bidding to outside companies.” The institute calculates that these steps will save the districts $211.45 per student. If the state’s other 250 districts currently served by WEA Trust follow suit, the savings statewide could reach hundreds of millions of dollars.
Hundreds of millions of dollars over how many years?? Where did all that excess money go? Why hasn’t a full accounting of all the moneys been demanded? When will the Rs start playing real hardball against these totally corrupt unions and correctly apply the RICO statutes?

This is the operative section of the linked article that should be able to trigger RICO statutes:

Romney has tried to paint Newt as an insignificant back-bencher in the Reagan Revolution.
That is simply inaccurate.
It should also be noted that within 24 hours of Mittens calling for Newt to release his contract with Freddie Mac, Newt put it on the web. Mittens tried to intimate that Newt was a lobbyist.
At the same time, Mittens called for Gingrich to release the House Ethics Report. Apparently his grasp of both the issue and how government works is somewhat lacking.
It was published and available for public consumption in 1997, and put on the web shortly after.
I should be noted that Newt was completely exonerated of all charges, somthing Mittens failed to mention in his Iowa ads, and continues to forget to mention.

I hadn’t thought of RICO, but it sure looks like the school districts were getting robbed through a joint venture of the unions and the insurance companies. Unions = corruption, simple.

Just picked this up at a silly website I won’t link to.
That’s why my boyfriend, who’s not exactly a people person, claims he’s starting a nihilistic social network called “Quitter.” (Posts are zero characters, and you’re asked not to join.)

Good afternoon Hamsters. Have been doing all the errands this morning before any serioius rain shows up. Prime trip was to the feed store for grain for the mares, as the bins are almost empty in the barn. That was accomplished without incident and only a few sprinkles fell briefly, but the sky to the west was getting darker. Increasing static on the radio means a peek at the radar is a good idea. Rain is in the area in varying intensity, but so far it has missed us. The main event is yet to come later tonight and tomorrow.
The debris from the last monsoon that surrounded culverts behind our pasture has been removed just in time for possibly another one tomorrow. We’re grateful for the rain, but a bit more spread out would be better.
Wisconsin’s Grandsons of Liberty are getting great help from Main Street Patriots’ True The Vote expertise in vetting voter registration rolls to vet the recall election petition signatures for Governor Scott Walker, the Lt. Governor, and four state senators. Sam Malone interviewed a Grandsons representative on his morning show today. Seems True The Vote has a sophisticated vetting computer program that can be adapted for Wisconsin’s purposes and will save a tremendous amount of time in checking the purported 1 million signatures turned in. The Unionistas and Progressives in Wisconsin are not happy about that I’m sure. Poor babies. May they learn not to mess with Texas when Texas lends a helping hand. 🙂

#48 Simple: Once again you have missed the freaking point. This was a payoff to Buffet for his support. It is freaking crooked as a dog’s hind leg, just as loaning Petrobras money shortly after Soros invested in Petrobras thus netting him a huge payoff. #53 TT: That is something that should happen more often. The “compensation” for jurors in Harris County must be addressed.
1) Start off with free parking in the building
2) Increase the stipend to $50.00 for showing up and make it $100/day thereafter + they have to provide lunch and Kosher if necessary.
As it is now, it costs $.50 to show up for jury duty if you drive once you pay for parking and that does not count the fuel you burn to get there.
These simple steps will cause many to actually serve as the time spent actually puts some money in the pocket. $100/day does not cover what many make when at work but it does take some of the sting out. -

My wife found out that our dog (a Schnauzer) could hardly hear, so she took it to the veterinarian. The vet found that the problem was hair in the dog’s ears. He cleaned both ears, and the dog could then hear fine. The vet then proceeded to tell Andrea that, if she wanted to keep this from recurring, she should go to the store and get some “Nair” hair remover and rub it in the dog’s ears once a month.
Andrea went to the store and bought some “Nair” hair remover. At the register, the pharmacist told her, “If you’re going to use this under your arms, don’t use deodorant for a few days.”
Andrea said, “I’m not using it under my arms.”
The pharmacist said, “If you’re using it on your legs, don’t use body lotion for a couple of days.”
Andrea replied, “I’m not using it on my legs either. If you must know, I’m using it on my Schnauzer.”
The pharmacist says, “Well, stay off your bicycle for about a week.” -

I disagree, jury service should not be paid beyond the current token $6 which might cover parking. (Most people donate that $6 back to the system at the end of the tour.) I don’t know that bored unemployeed folks like the “slacker” make good jurors. If you are empaneled at lunch time, you will be fed at the court’s expense. I don’t like being called for jury duty, either, but I do it because I take the “duty” part seriously. -

#58 M42: The duty is serious. The people always have the option of donating the fee back. To cost someone a day of work and make them pay for parking for “serving” on a jury, is abusive. When the $6 or 7 stipend was introduced that would pay for lunch and parking and maybe a beer on the way home; now it actually costs over and above the day lost at work which is simply fundamentally wrong.

Man, the white shirt guy was a lot more patient that I would have been. Not like I would have won a confrontation, but I would not have waited that long to do something. Since I’m a girl, I probably would have screamed loud and long to get a teacher to come running.
Or kicked him in the nuts.

It should also be noted that within 24 hours of Mittens calling for Newt to release his contract with Freddie Mac, Newt put it on the web. Mittens tried to intimate that Newt was a lobbyist.
Decide for yourself.
Your link says he was retained as a consultant. The question is the nature of his consultation. Did Newt, for example, advise Fannie t osupport certain policies and then influence legislators to support legislation which would bennefit Fannie from supporting the policies he said they should supprt? If so, that’sa lobbist effort. I heard on Hewitt tonight that Newt did admit to Mitt that a lobbyist was hired and I read somewhere last night that Newt Newt reported directly to that lobbyist.
I should be noted that Newt was completely exonerated of all charges, somthing Mittens failed to mention in his Iowa ads, and continues to forget to mention.
Newt didn’t mention it either. So how can he be expected to deal with Iran. 😉

Well, nothing much has happened here on the north bank of the Brazos at Richmond regarding rain other than a couple of interludes of light mist. But the fog sneaking up from the coast will surely blanket our area before any storms show up overnight. In anticipation of some nasty stuff coming through or nearby, similar to the monsoon two weeks ago, we’ve removed smaller items from the front and back porches and the patio to safer places. Next- door neighbors had their substantial patio furniture flung into their pool by that storm. Better to move a few things than have missiles launched.
Not watching the State of the Union Show nor the GOP rebuttal. Was somebody picking names out of a phone book for that? 🙁 There will be sufficient post mortems in the blogs and on the radio tomorrow.

Newt Gingrich’s decision today to bash Mitt Romney for hiring former Charlie Crist loyalists and employees doesn’t seem to be sitting well with Sen. Marco Rubio, who drove Crist out of the Republican Party before beating him at the polls in 2010.
Said Rubio: “Mitt Romney is no Charlie Crist. Romney is a conservative. and he was one of the first national Republican leaders to endorse me. He came to Florida, campaigned hard for me, and made a real difference in my race.”

Like Newt in Shannon’s #4, it looks like Romney bucked the establishment. Probably cuz he doesn’t smoke cigars like they do.

Rubio: “Not only do I want to vote for Romney in the Forida primaries, I can and WILL vote for Romney in the Florida primaries”. That should balance out Sarah Palin’s South Carolina comment. 😉

51 Boney,
I don’t think Berkshire Hathaway will go out of business if BNSF does not get to haul Canadian Shale/Tarsand Oil Extracts. B-H has every right to lobby for business; it does not mean that they will get it.
My company sells reciprocating engines and gas turbines. We are an industry leader in lean burn Low-NOx technology and yes everytime the NOx & CO limits are tightened we will benefit.
We are not out there lobbying for stricter controls, but only a poor businessman would not prepare for change and opportunity. I am in favor of the pipeline. My company will sell a lot of the equipment used to build and operate the pipeline, but if it falls thru…do we punish everyone else. I’ll hedge my bets and own stock in B-H and my company.
Every major corporation and special interest group in this country floods the Super Pacs with money in an effort to influence who will be President next. They all want something or some favor. What else is new?

You quote a Faux news article?!
The article compares Obama’s contributions from 2001 to 2004 and compares it to Romney’s 2010 to 2011.
While it is expected that these clowns will pull your leg, folks don’t have to wave theirs about so.

The Atlanta Jewish Times editor who wrote an inflammatory article regarding the President, Mossad and other flights of fancy has resigned. I’m not sure what the lesson learned is.

I caught Mitch Daniels GOP Response speech and it was good. He isn’t charismatic but he’s a good speaker and the ideas were sound and clearly expressed. It was almost Reaganesque, actually.

Shamaal;
The article compares Obama’s contributions from 2001 to 2004 and compares it to Romney’s 2010 to 2011.
So, what should have been the percentage of obama’s charitable contributions? 2%, 3%, push it to the extreme 4%? for a Liberal, that may be asking way too much.
