I hope I do not get stuck in the mountains of southern NM. We had to abandon our rear wheel drive SUV about a half mile from our rental house. I could not make it up a snow/ice covered dirt road. I put the tire chains on the rear wheels with the assistance of two firemen that just happened to… Read more »

Bonecrusher sorry to hear about the extra money you had to shell out to the Lone Star State. It sounds like they are assuming a private party sale (which it was) on a vehicle in pristine condition both mechanically and paint/body. I once bought a vehicle for a company I use to own from a dealer in Ohio. They did… Read more »

It could end up just being Romney and Paul on the Virginia ballot.

It could end up just being Romney and Paul on the Virginia ballot. Four Republican presidential candidates – Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry and Ron Paul — submitted paper work in time to qualify for Virginia’s March 6 primary ballot. . . . Rep. Michele Bachmann, former Sen. Rick Santorum and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman did not submit… Read more »

Might could be Bonesy, but it ain’t gonna happen. The Jimmy Dick brand’s gone sour. Huntsman is polling 10 times higher than Gove Goodhair in NH and if he doesn’t pull at least a strong third in Iowa, he’ll be coming back to Austin in time for Valentines Day.

#78 Sarge: So it will be Newt, Romney, Perry, and Doktor Kookoobananas. Dr. Kookoobananas, enough said. Romney has had every position on every issue and still can’t bring himself to admit that Romneycare in Taxachussetts is a disaster. He has a huge ego problem that will not allow him to admit a mistake, kind of like the JugEared Jackass. He… Read more »

Not that I agree with the practice, but I believe the vehicle tax thing was changed several years back, primarily because people were selling cars for thousands and claiming the sale was only a few hundreds. The practice was so obviously widespread that the county tried to come up with a way to recoup those sales taxes that were going… Read more »

#46 BC The general rule in the new car business is to never give more than $1,000 for any car with more than 100K miles on it, maybe up to $1,500 under unusual circumstances. Any car dealer that claims to offer more than that is lying. They just bury the overage into the price or financing of the new vehicle… Read more »

It’s certainly possible, but they may have used a more cold tolerant type of meter. I also think it is required by building codes in the northeast for all meters to be in the basement.

#40 Hamous: Kelly Blue book $3500, sales price $2500, tax value $4080. The $2500 price was fair IMHO for a vehicle with 200k miles, fading/peeling clear coat on the paint and several dents. On the plus side, the vehicle was very well maintained, so the mechanics were great. The bigger issue is that there should never be a sales tax… Read more »

#40 Hamous There are several trade pricing publications for the used auto industry. The arbitrary value assigned was almost double what I paid for the vehicle.

It’s not really an arbitrary value since it is based on the blue book value. But I wholeheartedly agree, it is double taxation to be paying sales tax on used items.

Darren, If the gas company is doing a mainline supply repair, it will allow a air to get into the lines. They may have a leak somewhere they need to fix or a valve that needs to be replaced. They can’t turn the gas back on with air in the line because it would blow out all the pilot lights.… Read more »
