For all Catholics and many of the more liturgical Protestants, the Gospel reading yesterday was the Annunciation (Lk 1:26-38)
The angel Gabriel was sent from God
to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph,
of the house of David,
and the virgin’s name was Mary.
And coming to her, he said,
“Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.”
But she was greatly troubled at what was said
and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
Then the angel said to her,
“Do not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God.
“Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,
and you shall name him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,
and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,
and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever,
and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
But Mary said to the angel,
“How can this be,
since I have no relations with a man?”
And the angel said to her in reply,
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore the child to be born
will be called holy, the Son of God.
And behold, Elizabeth, your relative,
has also conceived a son in her old age,
and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
for nothing will be impossible for God.”
Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word.”
Then the angel departed from her.
Reading this always makes me think how utterly and completely holy and obedient to God’s will Mary was. How many of us would have the faith and courage to do what she did, especially knowing that turning up unmarried and pregnant at the age of fourteen or so would likely have resulted in her being stoned to death? Even if an actual angel showed up to tell you about it?

Actually, Boehner was part of booting Newt out of GOP leadership in the House but I thought you were presenting subsequent lame GOP House majority leaders/Speaker ofthe house. But, then again, I don’t think Trent Lot was ever either.
I mentioned Boehner because I don’t see him as all that.
53 Darren says: December 19, 2011 at 10:57 pm Sarge #45; Tom Delay, Dennis Hastert, Trent Lott. You forgot John Boehner. John Boehner was not in the Leadership that booted Newt out. But those freaking clowns and a few others were. Like I said, the fact that those are the guys who booted Newt out is an argument FOR Newt,… Read more »

You forgot John Boehner.
The whole thing would be amusing if it weren’t so serious. Romney and his establishment sponsors are never going to be successful in getting him past 18-20% anywhere other than New Hampshire, and quite likely has already made it probable for Ron Paul to win Iowa.
IIRC, the same bunch that ran Newt off also made Dick Armey uncomfortable, saw Bill Archer out the door, and gave John Kasich a bit of a noodge, too.
49 Texpat says: December 19, 2011 at 10:05 pm #45 Sarge ain’t that the truth. I find that, given the type of Republican Leadership that replaced Newt and what they “accomplished” after they got rid of him, the fact that those clowns ran him out of office is a recommendation FOR Newt—not one to use against him. Churchill was likewise… Read more »

Wow, Hammy, how did you get this one past yourself, when the rule plainly states that “If your comments contain any racist bent to them they will be deleted and you will be banned” ?
Wow, just wow.
Tom Delay, Dennis Hastert, Trent Lott.
I’m sooooooooo freakin grateful that a sensible crop of Republicans were able to take over after the disaster Newt created. Things were grooooooovy.
It did Conservatism soooooo much good.
We need more pubbies like that.
Yah.
And then Tom Delay took over and everything was perfect.

Thats true but I think the author’s point was that Newt got the boot by his own party only four years after he started.
#17; All Catholic churches around the world have the exact same readings every day. It’s part of the whole small “c” catholic thing. I like that. In the LDS Church although the Sacrament Meeting talks vary (local members are asked to talk and the Bishop ultimately has the say as to the topic) all the lessons are the same. Anywhere… Read more »
I was just reading my Catholic Herald. It seems that the family grew by almost 2,500 new Catholics this year – the second largest group of any diocese in the country.
And now they get to celebrate the wonderful celebrations of the season with their new communities.
Welcome home.

Pretty sure it hasn’t changed.

What was your LST handle, Boneyman?
I remember someone on the LST pages trying to bring me to task for daring to make the claim that there really isn’t a dimes worth of difference between Nazism, fascism, or communism as they all have complete governmental control over all means of production and very strictly centrally controlled economy, freedom doesn’t much exist. After that any difference that… Read more »

And it looks to me like there’s a Honky in the wood pile somewhere in Holder’s Barbadian ancestry. I blame his and Obama’s white blood for their idiocy.
In these austere times, I for one, am happy to be able to provide The One We’ve Been Waiting For, his children, and their cow a wonderful $4 million vacation so he can Deliver Us From Our Peril.
And while we insist on hyphenating Americans let me point out that “African-American” refers to the descendants of African slaves brought to America in the 17th through 19th centuries. Barack Obama is not an “African-American” so, you know, you’re not in fact both “African-American”.
Why do Barack Obama and Eric Holder hate Mexicans?
Likely criminal Marxist morons.
And idiots.
No, it’s the fact that you’re both Marxist morons. Idiots.
#20 That is correct. Still, most of it passed the House. I think the only one that didn’t was congressional term limits.
Looks like corrupt US AG Eric Holder is running out of excuses.
He’s finally personally trying to resort to the race card.

#19 Hamous: Ifn I recall correctly, THE CONTRACT called for 10 items to be roll call voted on in the full House; the Newtsky never guaranteed that they would pass, only that they would be voted on. As I recall, all 10 items were voted on the floor of the house within the first 100 days, that means the contract… Read more »
Supporters of Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney have to face one inconvenient truth; they both failed when given the chance to govern. I don’t know about Romney, but Gingrich got pretty much all of his “Contract with America” passed through the House. Much of it got through the Senate as well. Clinton vetoed a couple. The SCOTUS overturned the line-item… Read more »
#12 Shannon: What about Gorbachev? Gorbachev’s primary utility in the events of the late 1980’s & early 1990’s was that he did not get in the way. “Glasnost” was just enough of an opening that allowed the camel’s nose under the tent. In a sense, he rode the events of the day, while the other lead and drove those events.… Read more »

There are videos that are way more creepy than that one, although it does provide us with a good example of a true useful idiot toward the end.
In other news of world leaders passing, Vaclav Havel has died. The former dissident playwright, who suffered from prolonged ill-health, died on Sunday morning, his secretary Sabina Tancecova said. As president, he presided over Czechoslovakia’s transition to democracy and a free-market economy. He oversaw its peaceful 1993 split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. He was a giant among men.… Read more »
Wow. Aside from the performative displays of anguish–possibly sincere, in a bizarre way–note the total lack of interaction among mourners at monuments to recently deceased North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Il. Orwell’s great insight into totalitarianism was that it destroys all capacity for human intimacy, and replaces normal emotions with manipulable mania–and here’s further, chilling evidence. I think that sums it… Read more »
