Wednesday Lakewood Open Comments

Just in case you people just can’t get enough of Joel & Victoria Osteen, we have good news. They are in discussions to produce a new reality TV show.

“It turns (mission trips) into an entertainment model, where you feel good watching it, people feel good doing it and Joel Osteen gets exposure,” said Richard Flory, an expert in American Christianity at the Center for Religion and Civic Culture at USC. “In an era where media exposure is the Holy Grail, this is to be expected.”

Yay.

I think a closer analogy would be that they are to Christianity as Tiger Woods was to marital fidelity.

#7 Texanadian: That would seem to me to be an ironclad case for some retraining of the current workers. It is also indicative of really crappy management. One of the things that I must have missed is what was the total passenger throughput before compared to during the strike. How many supervisors were on the floor covering the strikers, were there more than normal? What is the ratio of workers to passengers before and during the strike? That way actual performance can be measured.

The good folks at Lakewood Church are free to do as they please, and I appreciate the fact that they allow me to do as I please, so whatever they want to do is fine with me so long as I don’t have to pay for it. Surely there is something going on out there that makes better gossip that what the Osteens are up to.

For instance, even though our bucket has a hole in it, we are apparently now going to help bail out Europe. Obama condemns an attack on the “English Embassy” in Tehran (now if Rick Perry said that, would it make the 10 o’clock news?) Iranian missile and nuclear facilities have suffered a rash of accidents resulting in explosions lately – guess they are getting careless with their handling of sensitive materials. Etc.

#11 TT: I beg to differ with you there, missy.

I think the public has come to realize that #Occupy is the Woodstock of the current era.

    1) Woodstock was a celebration of music, the Occupy morass is a protest against Capitalism and the faith in the Elohim of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
    2) Woodstock was an event scheduled by a willing landowner and tickets were sold, the participants were invited (for a fee) to attend and the musicians were, I believe, paid to perform. that the event was overrun with people wanting to attend does not approach the violation(s) that occurred around the country with the Occu-terd protests.
    3) Woodstock was a weekend event and then everyone went home, the Occu-VSRs showed up and refused to leave.
I am sure there are many more substantive differences; comparing the Occuliars to Woodstock is really dissing the Woodstockers.
I said all of that as a preface; this in no way means that I approve of the behavior of the Woodstock crowd once on site. When you really compare the two, there is no comparison.

By the comparison to Woodstock, what I was referring to was (1) it’s the “place” to be for young and impressionable and empty minds, (2) the anti-establishment statement involved, and (3) the general sense of lawlessness and liberal yahooism that permeates the event.

#15 Pyro: About those tree dwelling protesters; after the cops gave clear and specific orders to vacate the tree the Bonecrusher method of removal would involve the use of tasers. The protesters would be warned that they were about to be tazed and that any injuries sustained by them falling out of the tree as a result of the tazing would be their own fault. After the first one convulses on the ground after falling out of the tree, the rest would come down quite quickly.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) contributed to this misdirection by accusing HHS of “ABC: Anybody but Catholics” bias. What the USCCB ought to have condemned, in my judgment, was the harm HHS’s new policy will inflict on victims of human trafficking.

The Church’s victims’ services program is not the only faith-based agency affected by HHS’ new requirement that victims receive the “full range of family-planning services,” including abortions and contraception. The Salvation Army — a huge presence in the trafficking-services arena — and the expanding membership of the Christian Trafficking Shelter Association also will undoubtedly decline to participate in the HHS program. Instead of expanding the pool of organizations working to “rescue and restore” victims of human trafficking, Kathleen Sebelius is advancing a policy that will diminish the reach of these vital services. But that’s okay with our secretary of Health and Human Services who holds that the “positive good” of abortion trumps all other considerations.

This dispute isn’t simply about the morality of abortion in general; it is about the specific harm inflicted on victims of human trafficking by the Sebelius policy. Not only is she creating a disincentive for organizations to serve victims where once there had been an open door; her policy will visit additional harm on the victims. In fact, to provide abortions or regimes of contraception to a person currently being exploited for commercial sex might very well be a death sentence.

    and,

The average age of entry into commercial sex exploitation is about 14. The average life expectancy of someone in commercial sexual exploitation is seven years. Start at 14, dead by 21. The mortality rate for someone in commercial sexual exploitation is 40 times higher than for a non-exploited person of the same age. Helping a victim return to exploitation more quickly by terminating a pregnancy increases the odds of death.

Kristy Childs is a survivor of commercial sexual exploitation and the founder of Veronica’s Voice, an organization in Kansas City that rescues victims. She tells me there have been many live births among her clients over the past 12 years, but she has yet to be asked for help getting an abortion. “Pregnancy often leads a woman to seek rescue and a new life,” she said.

Embattled Attorney General Eric Holder today demanded The Daily Caller stop publishing articles about the growing calls in Congress for his resignation because of the failed Operation Fast and Furious gun-walking program.

As Holder’s aide was escorting the attorney general offstage following his remarks Tuesday afternoon at the White House, a Daily Caller reporter introduced himself and shook Holder’s hand. The reporter asked him for a response to the growing chorus of federal legislators demanding his resignation.

Holder stepped towards the exit, then turned around, stepped back toward the reporter, and sternly said, “You guys need to — you need to stop this. It’s not an organic thing that’s just happening. You guys are behind it.”

#27 TP: I guess the fact that Eric Holder subverted the laws of the land of both Mexico and USA in order to create chaos is not enough of a crime for him to step down. I think we are all aware that the goal of Holder was the same as the one of Reno in that if there is enough gun violence, the people will demand a repeal of the 2nd amendment. The problem is that there is not enough gun violence against innocent citizens for them to demand such a thing. The thing the people are demanding is enforcement of the gun laws on the books and keeping the violators in prison.

I’ve been wandering around the blogosphere reading opinions about Newt.

    Check out these:

A conservative temperament is the essential precondition for the development of a solid, conservative political philosophy.

People who are fountains of big new ideas, who continually express themselves in the most extravagant language “on the planet,” who are so insanely manic that with the least whiff of possibly becoming president they start nattering on about teaching an online course while in the White House, presumably because the primary job is just not big enough for them….friends, this is ~not~ a man of conservative temperament.

A man like this will inevitably seek to reinvent the country and reshape your life according to his never-ceasing stream-of-consciousness big ideas, all of which he thinks are brilliant.

    And:

As I watch this amazing high-wire act of Newt’s, I find myself holding my breath, watching in fascinated horror and waiting for the inevitable crash.

It reminds me of one of my favorite Gary Larson cartoons of all time. A dog is walking a tightrope stretched high above two banks of spectators. He is balancing a ball on his head, spinning two plates in his front paws and a plastic hoop on one leg.

The caption reads… High above the crowd, Rex tried to concentrate… but he was haunted by one nagging thought. He was an old dog, and this was a new trick.

One thing the Bush and Obama administrations did right, among a multitude of wrongs, was to see that banks in the USA were fully and securely recapitalized after the debacle of 2008.

The Europeans have not and it looks as if their governments will have to nationalize the banks or sell them off to foreigners like the US, China, Russia or the Saudis. Not likely to happen.

Here is a Business Insider list of the 20 banks in Europe guaranteed to collapse should the PIIGS group go down. (Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece, Spain)

The exposure of their equity reaches into the thousands of percent.

    Some big names here.

I saw where the US Federal Reserve had a conference in Atlanta yesterday on the PIIGS crisis in Europe. One of the speakers was a finance official from Greece and after the conference, he was walking around the hotel trying to get some cash, but the ATM machines denied his Greek bankcard. He also couldn’t find any exchange counters that would trade Euros for US dollars. One of the American banking analysts there bought some Euros off the guy just so he would have some walking around cash.

That is how bad it is, for real.

Hedge funder Kyle Bass, of Dallas, realized the value of the metals in a US nickel are worth 6.8 cents.

So he picked up the phone, called his banker, and ordered one million dollars worth of brand new nickels. The 20 million 5-cent coins are sitting in the Brink’s vault in downtown Dallas. Bass made $360,000 with a phone call and metals/mining are skyrocketing right now.

Now, I like the way that guy thinks.

Ann Coulter in her usual gentle way takes issue with the Cain accusers.

With the mainstream media giddily reporting on an alleged affair involving Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain, how long can it be before they break the news that their 2004 vice presidential candidate conceived a “love child” with his mistress, Rielle Hunter?
    /snip

This is the sort of evidence you get with an actual sexual predator: Bill Clinton’s accusers had gifts, taped phone conversations with him and a semen-stained dress.

Gennifer Flowers produced taped telephone calls with Clinton totaling thousands of words between them, with him counseling her on how to deny their affair: “If they ever hit you with it, just say no, and go on. There’s nothing they can do … But when they — if somebody contacts you, I need to know … All you got to do is deny it.”

Paula Jones had multiple same-day witnesses — including the state troopers who worked for Clinton and had already told the press about a “Paula” they brought to Clinton’s hotel room. And that was for a single incident.

Monica Lewinsky had lots of gifts from Clinton, including a hat pin, two brooches, a marble bear figurine, a T-shirt from Martha’s Vineyard and Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass,” all of which she mysteriously placed with Clinton’s secretary, Betty Currie, during the investigation, as well as a semen-stained dress, which Monica kept.

Ginger White claims she had a 13-year affair with Cain — and all she has are two books with inscriptions that could have been written to an auto mechanic who waited in line at a Cain book signing. Even her business partner during the alleged affair says White never mentioned Cain’s name.

These women are like triple-A ball players with the stats being: number of bankruptcies, smallest bank account, number of liens, most false claims, number of children out of wedlock, degrees of separation from David Axelrod, total trips to human resources and so on.

Compared to the baggage of the Newtski and the big govt stooooooooooopidity of Mittens, Cain is looking better all the time. Not one of Cain’s accusers has any credibility, this is a screaming scorched earth destroy at all costs attack pattern from the Ds with the help of the accomplices of the LSM. I really think that now is the time to rally around Herman Cain.

With the latest rumbliings of the euro’s doom, which I do not think are exaggerated, we are especially happy to have exchanged our leftovers for good old US dollars several weeks ago.

There was little surprise on our part when tour guides announced that many merchants would take US dollars as well as euros. Wonder what fellow tourists from other countries on our excursions thought about that but never overheard any conversations on it. We had folks from Canada, England, Scotland, Australia, and New Zealand on the tours as kind of extended family. Many Germans also were touring, though since Germany’s fiscal health is supposed to the best in Europe that shouldn’t be surprising. Best, of course, is surely a relative concept these days. IMHO, the Germans are quite within their rights to refuse to sacrifice their economy for the likes of profligate whiners like Greece.

Pretty much everyone who asked where we were from had no problem knowing where Houston or Texas is. 🙂

As someone who has traveled on several continents, through many countries and encountered people from every corner of the earth, each and every one of them was intrigued and fascinated to meet a real Texan.

When, over 30 years ago, I first traveled to the UK, I stopped one morning for breakfast at an inn in Newark-on-Trent in the Midlands. I was dressed like I usually was in Texas – boots, Wranglers and starched white Western shirt – and then I noticed all the young waitresses gathered together staring at me. Finally, one of them, a brave emissary, came over to my table with a handful of pounds in her hand and shyly asked if I was from Texas. I said indeed I was and asked how could I be of help. The girl said she and her co-workers wanted to know if they could exchange their English pound notes for some real Texas money.

I was a young guy and it took every bit of my strength to not laugh out loud and calmly explain to her that, regretfully, Texas was no longer an independent nation, but was, in fact, a part of the United States and we had no money of our own anymore. I so did not want to embarass her in front of her friends.
