Monday Flaming Foreign Failure Monday Open Comments

It seems our Nobel Peace Prize winner has a steaming load of scatological stuff on his plate. It seems that Pakistan is enraged over a NATO attack. Iran is threatening to go all four-year-old tantrum as an excuse to wipe out Israel. The Euro is about to tank, along with related national economies. Is our sitting president sitting on his hands? He played golf again while the Middle East and the European financial structure started running serious fevers.
Whatever his strengths may be, a sense of propriety or an understanding of appearances certainly isn’t one of them.

Former Enron advisor and Nobel prize-winning monkey sez raise income tax levels above the record levels Clinton raised them in the 1990s.

And I don’t just mean a return to Clinton-era tax rates. Why should 1990s taxes be considered the outer limit of revenue collection? Think about it: The long-run budget outlook has darkened, which means that some hard choices must be made. Why should those choices only involve spending cuts? Why not also push some taxes above their levels in the 1990s?

But don’t stop there! Tax all financial transactions too!

And then there’s the idea of taxing financial transactions, which have exploded in recent decades. The economic value of all this trading is dubious at best. In fact, there’s considerable evidence suggesting that too much trading is going on. Still, nobody is proposing a punitive tax. On the table, instead, are proposals like the one recently made by Senator Tom Harkin and Representative Peter DeFazio for a tiny fee on financial transactions.

Our HNP should fire Timmah and put this genius in charge.

I heard a piece of an interview with your boy Krugman last week. He has clearly drunk of the Kool Aid of the NY liberal establishment. He all but called everyone who was not of the NY liberal establishment a rube, a fool, and a dullard who should just step aside and let their betters (i.e. him) worry about how best to spend their money.

Darren, from last night, this really merits a re-post: Conception to birth, the development from 2 individual cells to a single human being.
How can anyone, after seeing the video in the linkie above have any question about when life actually begins? To say that life only begins sometime after birth, requires that something really important be missing in your person; or to quote Hitlery Robbem Clinton, “it requires an active suspension of disbelief”.

Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) will announce Monday that he is not seeking re-election, ending a 32-year career in the House.

Frank, 71, is the top Democrat on the Financial Services Committee and the architect, with former Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), of the sweeping Wall Street regulatory reform law enacted in 2010.

    Ooooooooh.

    Impressive.

IIRC, the Sociology course I took in college was the single biggest joke course I had the pleasure of wasting time in. I took it in my senior year to fulfill a “social sciences” elective. When finals rolled around, being the geeky math major I was, I calculated exactly what score on the final I had to achieve in order to receive an A in the class. The exam was to be a multiple choice of some length that eludes me at present.

I figured that I would have had to score in the neighborhood of 15 or 20 for my grade to slide to a B. Note that this was below random chance. IOW, I would have had to actively screw up to harm my grade. I decided to actually take the exam (rather than simply fill in all of one of the four options).

Exam day rolls around and I’m feeling all full of myself. I had already taken my math and whatever other classes I had that semester, so I was relaxed. The prof passed out the exams and 7 minutes later, I turned mine in. I got all kinds of dirty looks from the other students, many of whom were seriously sweating it.

    I got an 85.

Your story reminds me of my sciences in college. I was required to take two science classes for my business degree, and as I’ve always been interested in the earth sciences, I first signed up for geology. I learned a lot in that class. We discussed the effects of earth movement on geography, the different methods of mountain making, and rock formations and types. I still can’t drive through hillside cutouts without mentally trying to fold the sedimentary layers in my head. We talked about magma movements and fault lines, and their effect on topography. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed that class, and decided to sign up for geography for my next science course.

My professor for geography was awesome. He brought in liquid nitrogen to help with his discussion of high and low air pressures and they work work. (I still remember him pouring it out on the carpet, the spray upward and outward, and the psssshhht as it vaporized.) Silly putty on the front of this podium gave us a visual for magma movement. We discussed why we get weather fronts – how and where they develop, how and why they move, where they move to, jet stream development, etc. We talked about how geography affects climate and the development of civilizations – and why wars are sometimes fought. It was probably one of the most informative and interesting classes I took in all four years of college. Some of what we discussed I had already been exposed to in my geology class. The instructor made it all seem so sensible and reasonable, and with what I already knew, I skated into the final with a high A average. It didn’t help that his tests were multiple choice, my favorite test type. I could have skipped the final and passed the class.

I walked into the final ready to be challenged, and I found that it was a combination of questions from all previous tests and new questions from our last few weeks of discussion. I whizzed through the questions, and the only one I wasn’t sure about the was the wave length of infrared light. Was it .07 or .007? I guessed on that one and was about to turn in my test when I checked the clock. It had only been ten minutes to answer 100 questions! I felt funny going up so soon, so I reviewed my answers, dawdling over the infrared light question. I finally decided it was stupid of me to sit there when I was done, and so, fifteen minutes after getting the test, I turned it in. Heads were turning as I walked down the stairs, and the TA taking up the Scantron forms said I had time to review my answers. “I already did,” I said, and she looked at me funny. “I took geology last semester,” I said, and she nodded knowingly. I didn’t add that I wasn’t a moron, I just turned to walk out the door.

    Oh Canada!

Canada will announce next month that it will formally withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol, CTV News has learned.

The Harper government has tentatively planned an announcement for a few days before Christmas, CTV’s Roger Smith reported Sunday evening.

The developments come as Environment Minister Peter Kent prepares for a climate conference in Durban, South Africa that opens on Monday, with delegates from 190 countries seeking a new international agreement for cutting emissions.

Issues on the agenda include extending the Kyoto emission targets, a move being championed by Christiana Figueres, head of the UN climate secretariat.

Kent said in the House of Commons on Nov. 22 he won’t sign a document at the Durban conference that extends the Kyoto targets.

“Canada goes to Durban with a number of countries sharing the same objective, and that is to put Kyoto behind us,” Kent said

If you were familiar with that part of Flarda you’d be astounded at the pure racially motivated gerrymandering it took to create her district. They had to scoop up parts of counties from west Jacksonville, east Gainesville, west Daytona, clear all the way down to Kissimmee to make sure a black person got elected. Race was the ONLY criteria used in drawing the district.

Yup. The problem is (and this is a rare but real example of the “TPD” Bobo used to rail ad nauseum about) is that BOTH parties sign on to this absurd type of redistricting – Democrats so they can create a reliable district for their plantation overseers and Republicans so they would have a safe district with fewer minorities.

I’m not sure what the answer is but something needs to be done about the way we draw these districts. I’m not sure there’s a way to ever do it non-partisan but there has to be a better way than this.

    1) Load the populations within every zip code in the state into a database
    2) Using major thoroughfares and waterways when possible, program the computer to draw the districts into the most geographical uniform districts possible with as close to equal number of people within each district.
    3) Do not let race, ethnicity, or income have any bearing on the results – straight by the numbers with no gerrymandering.

The mismatch in infant mortality statistics across the globe is appalling. I think it is in Japan, if the baby does not survive for a week it is not considered a live birth, for statistical purposes that is. In the US, if the baby is born with out a head yet the heart beats one time it is considered a live birth. If the infanticidal maniac mother decides to abort ( an otherwise healthy baby) during the labor and delivery process, then that would not be counted as a live birth or a murder, simply a “lifestyle choice”.

I heard Cain’s preemptive “denial” on Hugh Hewitt on my way home from work and he and I agree with the following:

He’s not saying it happened but he’s not saying it didn’t; if it didn’t, and they’re planning to roll out a full denial once the report airs, then this is the worst bit of lawyerly media strategy since Jerry Sandusky’s attorney let him phone in to Bob Costas.

If Cain had no 13 year affair, NOW is a great time to say, “I had no affair”.

Sixty-one calls over four months is roughly one every other day. Cain and White didn’t work together, either: According to her, they met at a presentation he made for the NRA in the late 90s and have been friends ever since. Cain acknowledged that friendship in his interview with Blitzer this afternoon but said his wife has never met White. So they’re old friends, but not close enough friends that White would have met his family, yet close enough that (a) Cain would be willing to help her financially and (b) they’d be in frequent contact even while he was busy campaigning for president.

Two other interesting details. One: The Fox affiliate claims it wasn’t White who approached them with this story but a tipster who knows her and who allegedly was shopping the story to national media. That might explain the peculiar timing of White waiting to come forward until after Cain had already started to slide in the polls. If she was looking to make a buck off the story, she’d have been better off jumping in three weeks ago when he was still the frontrunner and media interest was sky high. The fact that she waited suggests that she might be telling the truth in saying she felt obliged to come forward before some news outlet picked up the tipster’s claim and ran with it. Two: Watch to the end here and you’ll see that she has money problems and has been accused before by a business partner of stalking and defamation. In fact, she lost a defamation case because, supposedly, she never showed up in court to contest the suit. Reason to doubt her credibility? Sure, but if she was stalking Cain or trying to shake him down for money, why didn’t he tell the reporter that when he texted him from White’s phone? And who is that mysterious tipster running around talking to reporters anyway? Click the image to watch.

The bill is reportedly aimed at women who show symptoms of postpartum psychosis. The condition was cited in the case of Andrea Yates, a Texas mother who drowned her five children six months after giving birth to her youngest.

    I friggin knew it.

I am not unsympathetic to women that suffer from postpartum depression/psychosis, but this legislation (PROPOSED) is a slap in the face to women that endured and did not commit such a heinous crime. Andrea Yates should be sitting on death row griping about the possibility of not getting a 5 star last meal.
