Monday Pinedale Shopping Mall Open Comments

The Pinedale Shopping Mall has just been bombed with live turkeys.

Film at eleven.
As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.

Things are moving and shaking in the GOP Primary, with only Romney holding steady, but maybe not so much.

In Iowa, Newt and Herman hold the top slots with Romney at third and Perry with almost half as many points as Ron Paul’s third place.

There’s a bit of a change in NH where Romney has lost three points while Newt and Ron Paul take second and third. Perry still polls behind Jon Huntsman. Paul’s rise is no real surprise to me Those in the state who still have the downeaster ethos are attracted to his type, and the Free State Project (google it) is attracting some folks who are even more politically active than even NH Natives, and they are all pretty much Ron Paul voters. But Romney’s down tick as both Newt, Paul, and even Huntsman see a rise is not a good sign for the master debater. His strategy is built around achieving a victory in NH so massive that it will put the seal on his “inevitability”. But in doing so, and by virtue of the fact that he’s practically a favorite son, he’s built expectations pretty high. Any showing of less than 40% in the primaries will be a kick in the groin.

And it’s looking like SC won’t make his groin feel any better. Cain still holds a commanding lead there, even seeing an uptick since last week, along with Newt. Mittens, and everybody else, has seen a downtick.

Its possible that after SC, Newt, Herman, and Romney will each have won a state. That’s bad news for Romney as it will shatter his claim of inevitability. If Newt keeps rising in SC and Herman holds steady, a third place showing is in the cards for Mittens, and that won’t help his inevitability one little bit.

The next round of primaries are in Florida (where Mittens is not doing well), and caucii in Nevada, Maine, Colorado, and Minnesota. RCP has Mittens up by 6 points in Nevada, but the last poll they show was taken almost a month ago, and we all know that so much has gone on in that time that we can’t rely on old results. I can’t find any reliable polling in the other states this morning.

    Words fail me.

Last year, then-CIA director Leon Panetta said the agency had to maintain “a greater awareness of counterintelligence.” But eight months later, Nasrallah let the world know he had bested the CIA, demonstrating that the agency still struggles with this critical aspect of spying and sending a message to those who would betray Hezbollah.

The CIA was well aware the spies were vulnerable in Lebanon. CIA officials were warned, including the chief of the unit that supervises Hezbollah operations from CIA headquarters in Langley, Va., and the head of counterintelligence. It remains unclear whether anyone has been or will be held accountable in the wake of this counterintelligence disaster or whether the incident will affect the CIA’s ability to recruit assets in Lebanon.

But it seems they ARE facing a formidable enemy:

Backed by Iran, Hezbollah has built a professional counterintelligence apparatus that Nasrallah – whom the U.S. government designated an international terrorist a decade ago – proudly describes as the “spy combat unit.” U.S. intelligence officials believe the unit, which is considered formidable and ruthless, went operational in about 2004.

Maybe they should read some Tom Clancy novels:

But whatever actions the CIA took, they were not enough. Like the Israelis, bad tradecraft doomed these CIA assets and the agency ultimately failed to protect them, an official said. In some instances, CIA officers fell into predictable patterns when meeting their sources, the official said.

I guess the next thing they will try is taking their Bible to the gun range and pop a few caps.

For any of you”city folks” that don’t take the Texas feral hog problem seriously:

Mexico to cull 50,000 wild boars from US invasion
    AFP

Mexican officials have unveiled plans to slaughter some 50,000 wild boars that have crossed the border from the United States and now threaten agriculture in Mexico.

The Ministry of Environment in Chihauha state said some 1,500 hectares (3,700 acres) of farmland in the border town of Ojinaga have been affected by the large number of feral pigs that have come from Presidio County, Texas.

“We must get rid of these European wild boars because they sleep overnight on US soil during the day and cross over to the Mexican side to feed,” Ignacio Legarreta, a state official, told local media.

The boars of European origin, which were imported to Texas as pets and then replicated in the wild, have caused serious damage to the flora and fauna of the area, officials said.

“They have reproduced to reach more than 50,000 animals that threaten the area,” said Legarreta.

That works out to be over 13 hogs per acre.

We used to raise hogs when I was young. I remember how quickly they turned grass into muck. The Mexicans are right – they are devastating to the flora and fauna, especially in such concentrations.

While I appreciate the reverse illegal immigration angle, I sympathize with the farmers who are just trying to make a living. Go make all the bacon you want, farmers!

Feral hogs are an environmental disaster in the highest order:
A female can reproduce at least once in her first year, after that she can reproduce 2-3 times per year at up to 15 or so per litter.
They live for a long time, well over 5 years, so when you run the numbers, it is not hard to see how they can overpopulate.
They are very destructive to the landscape, they will mark territory by scarring trees which usually kills the tree, they defecate in and near the water sources, fouling it for all other beasts, they will dig out hog wallows in the shallow areas to coat themselves in mud and they will root for grubs, worms and whatever else they can find destroying pastures in the process, not to mention the acceleration of the soil erosion process.
This year Texas legalized shooting the vermin from helicopters because they are such a menace.
Every feral pig needs to be shot on sight, every time, everywhere. Until we as citizens of the Great State of Texas realize that we are at war, the pigs will win.

I was just getting ready to comment on TT’s post. On our deer lease, we have traps around every blind and watering hole. If you see one in the daytime (very very rare, they are primary nocturnal in the wild), it is mandatory to shoot it, even if it means messing up your deer hunt for the day.

So I guess the question is would we rather have a bunch of wild hogs here in Texas or can we trade them to Mexico for some of their citizens. I’d like to be snarky, but frankly the ones that I know are pretty hard working – but I know nothing of their use of social services, schools, and the like.

I am always reminded of Neal Boortz “cat drop” story. He and his fellow skydivers claimed to round up stray cats and take them aloft. Once at altitude, they would toss all the cats out of the airplane then jump out behind them. The diver who landed with the most cats attached was declared the winner….

Needless to say, he got a lot of grief when he told that story – apparently some of his listeners believed him.

I normally agree with Geller but this seems rather trivial. I don’t particularly care what some illegal immigrant from Mexico mutters while he’s hooking turkey feet up to the conveyer that runs their neck through a saw. This is exactly how I have butchered many a chicken on the chopping block, except I didn’t yell Bismillah allahu akbar! as I was subjecting them to the axe. There are more important things to worry about.

#19 Hamous: The Apostle Paul is quite specific about “eating food sacrificed to pagan gods” and that is you should not knowingly do it. The allah that the moooooooooooooslimes worship is NOT the same as the Elohim of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The descriptions of allah in the koran match very closely the descriptions of the evil one in Scripture, the same goes for the 12th immam and the anti-christ.
Just as a reminder allahu does not mean “god” it means “our god” and akbar does not mean “great” it means “greater“. The obvious implication is that they are worshiping a different entity than we are.
This is an example of creeping sharia, one that must be beat back, just as one beats back the camel when it puts its nose under the tent.
This is a much bigger thing than some q-tip in a processing plant shouting something while on the job.

It is in a similar way that the Gas Laws don’t quite describe the behavior of a plasma. Initially it was thought that Einstein’s models worked from infinity backwards and forwards, but as we gain the capacity to push the envelope of what is possible, like create a plasma or build instrumentation to detect a 60 nanosecond difference, then the models start to lose cohesion.

I really don’t want to get into this again, but Paul said just the opposite. For those of us who know there is but one God eating such meat is not a problem. The distinction he made was for those who worshiped idols, eating such meat may defile their conscience because it is already weak.

I won’t go into gruesome details, but all of the workers who did the actual killing and exsanguination were all hired from the pool of recent parolees from the nearby high security prison for the most violent offenders.

These were the ex-inmates that no amount of arm-twisting or political pressure could force anyone to hire. Our friend’s brother said these guys really, really loved their job – every aspect of it.

Now this is not a concern for those who do not consume pork, however, for those who do, whatever these guys are thinking and saying is far worse than “Allah Akbar !”. Who knows what people say or think in food processing plants around the world ? Why would it even matter ?

You were right. That’s a picture of Crackerus Inebriatus Vulgaris var. Blue-topped or “Helmeted Blue”.

It’s unusual to see such a quality specimen moving under its own power. Usually the only time that happens is mid-morning, just after they arise and start consuming their helmet.

Did you see this one ?

NASA records released to resolve litigation filed by the American Tradition Institute reveal that Dr. James E. Hansen, an astronomer, received approximately $1.6 million in outside, direct cash income in the past five years for work related to — and, according to his benefactors, often expressly for — his public service as a global warming activist within NASA.

This does not include six-figure income over that period in travel expenses to fly around the world to receive money from outside interests. As specifically detailed below, Hansen failed to report tens of thousands of dollars in global travel provided to him by outside parties — including to London, Paris, Rome, Oslo, Tokyo, the Austrian Alps, Bilbao, California, Australia and elsewhere, often business or first-class and also often paying for his wife as well — to receive honoraria to speak about the topic of his taxpayer-funded employment, or get cash awards for his activism and even for his past testimony and other work for NASA.

Here’s where we’re all supposed to raise a glass to government paralysis. Granted, that’s preferable to a trillion dollars in new taxes, but (a) thanks to the scheduled lapsing of the Bush tax cuts, paralysis in this case means we’re still on the hook for that trillion (and more!) and (b) we desperately, desperately, desperately need Congress to act on entitlement reform. Paralysis means the status quo and the status quo simply isn’t sustainable. So, hurray?

The statement from Hensarling and Murray:

“After months of hard work and intense deliberations, we have come to the conclusion today that it will not be possible to make any bipartisan agreement available to the public before the committee’s deadline.

“Despite our inability to bridge the committee’s significant differences, we end this process united in our belief that the nation’s fiscal crisis must be addressed and that we cannot leave it for the next generation to solve. We remain hopeful that Congress can build on this committee’s work and can find a way to tackle this issue in a way that works for the American people and our economy.

“We are deeply disappointed that we have been unable to come to a bipartisan deficit reduction agreement, but as we approach the uniquely American holiday of Thanksgiving, we want to express our appreciation to every member of this committee, each of whom came into the process committed to achieving a solution that has eluded many groups before us. Most importantly, we want to thank the American people for sharing thoughts and ideas and for providing support and good will as we worked to accomplish this difficult task.”

Breaking: Super Committee declares defeat; Update: No downgrade, says S&P

Just to reiterate what El gordo said yesterday.

The Super Committee’s much-to-the-surprise-of-no-one super failure is now a reality. This quote from the Drudge linkie is revealing:

The committee, in the end, could not resolve that Republicans would not go as far as Democrats wanted on allowing more revenue raisers, and Democrats did not want to move on entitlement reforms.

The Rs tried to compromise and actually proposed “revenue enhancers” which is Bravo Sierra DC-Speak for a tax increase and that was rejected by the Ds as not enough. On the other hand the Ds did not yield at all on entitlement reforms. Anybody with two brain cells to rub together knows that it is the entitlements that are unsustainable and are causing the overwhelming majority of the problem. We do not have an income problem, the problem is spending; as if anybody doesn’t already know that. The Rs almost got rolled again by increasing taxes and getting nothing in return. So now we have the automatic cuts, my understanding is that the majority of which will come from defense, that will only make us weaker and kick the stooooopidity can down the wissin road.
Fix the problem now, cut everything 10% across the board and freeze spending at that level for 2 years. Then get the big knife out and cut another 20% and freeze again for 2 years.

Terror – and civil society – on trial in Boston

    By Charles Jacobs

Tarek Mehanna, a young Muslim student, son of an Egyptian immigrant, was arrested two years ago at his home in Sudbury; accused by the FBI of plotting a Mumbai like machine gun massacre of New England shoppers in Attleboro’s Emerald Square Mall – and for giving material support to Al Qaeda in Iraq. His trial began on Oct. 24.

Prosecution documents tell of Mehanna’s attempt to seek terrorist training in Yemen and Pakistan. They describe the pleasure he and his friends took in watching videos of Americans being beheaded and of American soldiers killed and mutilated in Iraq. Watching a scene of an American soldier whose chest was ripped open and whose innards then set ablaze with gasoline, Mehanna called it “a Texas barbeque.” When asked by a fellow extremist if the soldiers should not have received some sort of trial, Mehanna said no, “BBQ sauce is the way to go.” Mehanna and his friends talked online about how his own translations of Al-Qaeda recruitment literature into English made him part of “the media wing of Al Qaeda.” In these same conversations, monitored by the FBI, he has said that he “looks to Osama Bin Laden as his real father” and “loves him,” and that he wasn’t sorry for the victims of 9/11; he was just sorry “for the buildings.”

An upper middle class fellow with an advantaged background hates his neighbors and his country? Aren’t we told that poverty produces radicals?

Despite all this, the very people who have been telling us for years that they are true moderates have developed a Free Tarek Mehanna (FTM) Committee, which describes Mehanna in a petition as “a person with strong ethical values” who is “intelligent, charismatic, influential and trusted by many in the local Islamic community.” A role model.

The group has been aggressively politicizing the judicial proceedings against Mehanna. Its spokesmen accuse the FBI of a national effort to harm the entire American Muslim community. FTM has targeted individual prosecutors and harassed the US Attorney’s office with repeated phone calls and sit-ins. It labels anyone who dares to raise concerns about radical Islam as bigots and Islamophobes.

On Sept. 24, the leadership of the Islamic Society of Boston mosque in Roxbury organized an event there that featured pleas for support by Mehanna’s brother and by the families of three convicted terrorists from Georgia, North Carolina and New York (Ehsanul Sadequee, Ziyad Yaghi and Syed Fahad Hashmi, respectively). Speakers claimed their communities were “suffering under the war on terror,” which they called a US government plot against Muslims.

Whether Tarek Mehanna violated the law is an issue that should be left up to the courts – without mob pressures.

But what everyone in Boston should be concerned with is that Boston’s Muslim leadership, under the guise of protecting free speech, is celebrating a man who sees himself as a hateful enemy of our society and was prepared – says the FBI – to kill his fellow New Englanders.

One of the leaders of FTM is Imam Abdullah Faaruuq, president of the umbrella organization of all the mosques in New England (Islamic Council of N.E.) and the Muslim chaplain at Northeastern University. Imam Faaruuq caused a stir when, in response to Mehanna’s arrest, he encouraged Boston Muslims to “pick up the gun and the sword, don’t be afraid to go out there and do your job.” Faaruuq, by the way, is a man who has been embraced by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. While my organization has made both Patrick and the Northeastern administration aware of Faaruuq’s activities, both have refused to repudiate him. There’s a money angle as well: Northeastern student activity fees paid for a Support Mehanna event on campus in April. Last year, Faaruuq gave the Patrick administration $50,000 for “Muslim sensitivity training” for police.

In supporting an anti-American Islamist radical, Boston’s Muslim leadership is promoting a sort of tribalism, which sees all Muslims as “our brothers and sisters” who must be defended regardless of their actions. Rather than shunning indecent behavior found among fringe people in their own groups, as all decent Americans have learned to do, they are teaching their children to embrace people who want to kill their neighbors. This can only encourage future acts of hatred and terror.

Truly moderate Muslim leaders would want a fair trial for Tarek Mehanna, but would strongly condemn his hateful beliefs and might even undertake to investigate how these awful thoughts and radical ideology penetrated their community. We can only hope such voices emerge.

It’s disheartening to watch privileged children of Muslim immigrants who have benefited so generously from America turn toward hatred while their communal leaders exploit America’s tolerance to promote and lionize an indecent young man who is also an accused terrorist. In my view, the most disturbing facet of this story is the utter failure of Massachusetts media and political leadership to honestly deal with the growing radicalization of young Muslims.

I hope that Massachusetts’ civic and political leadership will summon the courage to ensure that justice is served and Mehanna’s trial proceeds without political interference or mob pressure.

On Sunday, Glenn Beck was honored in New York City at the Zionist Organization of America’s (ZOA) Justice Louis D. Brandeis Award Dinner for his ardent defense of Israel. But the ZOA wasn‘t the only one singing Beck’s praises. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also recognized Beck’s efforts.

“I also want to congratulate Glenn Beck for winning the … defender of Israel Award,” Netanyahu said. “Glenn … you stand for a lot. You too have been fearless in defending Israel against the slanders that are hurled against [it]. You’ve done that with considerable personal cost, but you’ve never backed off, you’ve never flinched, you’ve never walked away. There is no time like the first time you go camping in the woods overnight, without adults, at 9 or 10 with your buddies and you’re all lying there in the tent, in the pitch dark, when the bobcats start screeching….

Hey, uh, Charlie, did you hear that ? It sounds like there’s a baby crying all alone out here in the woods.

    Yeah, sounds pretty scary…

…and then the coyotes begin to start howling in the distance which sets off the ones ever closer so it sounds as if they are moving in towards your camp.

You ALMOST,…almost feel sorry for the pigs.
From the E Mail ; This Texas feral hog shooting chopper video (LOACH on the job) is fascinating.
The pilot has a fixed rifle with optics rigged back to his helmet and eye-piece. He doesn’t miss and his scout-chopper flying skills are down pat with the hogs behavior and pack or group running style. This came from Greg Cooper who has a huge ranch SE of Brownfield, Texas …south of Lubbock . I don’t know where the chopper hog hunting op is but it is clearly West Texas . This is a long run video but the hogs get it ! I don’t see them dropping flags or stakes from the air to ground-mark their kills so as to go find them easily but I assume they “know” the country or wait for the turkey buzzards to tip them off. The pilot is really good!
Oh and I have NO IDEA about the paint ball crap at the end. Weird~ 😉

This woman is a an absolute beast.

Recently, the Lifestyle Section of the Washington Post interviewed the Congresswoman. She was asked about efforts by the leadership of her own Church to ensure that there are conscience provisions in place to prevent Catholic Hospitals and Doctors from having to dispense contraceptives, (some of which are abortifacients) or perform abortions under the Obama Health Care legislation.

She once again claimed “‘I’m a devout Catholic and I honor my faith and love it – but they have this conscience thing’. She went on to assert that Catholic medical professionals who opt out of performing abortions would be “letting women die on the floor.” She said that efforts to protect health care providers from violating conscience were “savage.”

So, I’m reading this story about how the drought has lowered some lakes enough to expose buldings and even towns that had been there before the laes were created, and I come across this:

“If you don’t see it now, you might never see it again,” said Carol Standke, of Center Point, as she and her husband inspected the ruins a mile from where concrete seawalls ordinarily would keep the lake from waterfront homes.

If they are on a lake, shouldn’t they be called lakewalls instead of seawalls?

    Just sayin.

The man holding the bobcat is actually my grandfather. Coincidentally his name was Charlie (grandfather, not the cat). The picture was taken about 1965 in Campbell Station, Florida. I don’t think the town even exists anymore. It was South of Kissimmee. The cat had been killing chickens for a while before he was dispatched.

But he is Dang good and you have to remember he is flying a helicopter! I have flown a Bell Jet Ranger and it is tough! At 150 Kts it’s just like a small plane, but to stop and hover, very, very hard. If you can stack ten greezed bowling balls on top of one another, you can fly a chopper. 😉

The last report I have from an unimpeachable source was on a handout at the
Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge year before last. It mentioned 5 known to be ranging throughout the mountains. They have been spotted frequently in the Refuge itself.

TPWD reports that there have been cougar sightings reported in all 254 Texas counties, with confirmation in 67.

In January last year, there was a confirmed sighting in Atoka in SE Oklahoma.

That’s not really that far from the reported site of the pic, at least as far as ranging mountain lions go. They cover a lot of territory, and as each new generation comes in, they tend to spread out. There are those who think that there may poissibly be more mountain lions in the west today than there were 100 and more years ago.

To give an idea of why a cougar in Northeast Texas is at least plausible given the know cougar population in SW Oklahoma and the sighting in SE Oklahoma, the Cougar Network reports this

A confirmation in June, 2004 in Oklahoma is very interesting in that it is the longest migration of a collared cougar ever recorded. This cat was collared by South Dakota State University researchers in the Black Hills of South Dakota, moved into adjacent Wyoming and then ended up killed by a train near Red Rock, Oklahoma, a distance of about 667 miles if he went in a straight line. Most likely this cougar traveled almost 1000 miles following river corridors. SDSU researchers Daniel J. Thompson and Jonathon A Jenks published a very interesting research note on this incident entitled Long Distance Dispersal by a Subadult Male Cougar from the Black Hills, South Dakota which was published in the Journal of Wildlife Management. This research note is accessible from Dr. Jenk’s web page at http://wfs.sdstate.edu/wfsdept/faculty/jjenks.htm.
