Well, I see that Obama has decided to use partisanship as a shield: WH Rejects Subpoena Request for Solyndra This is gonna get interesting.
I’m heading off to the Houston International Quilt Show this weekend. If you’ve never been, you should go at least once. Some of these are absolutely a-maze-ing. Catholics will like #18 in the slide show. Trust me, pictures don’t do the quilts justice.
I don’t understand – they beat Texas. And the only place Obama hates more than Israel is Texas. You’d think the White House would reach out or something. Maybe he doesn’t see how they can help him get elected.
Well, did he or didn’t he? Watch the whole thing before you decide.
Know your meme.

Rice is playing some team I never heard of before this afternoon at Rice Stadium (I don’t know why they never named it after Jess Neely). It’s homecoming, and I haven’t been over there in a few years, but I’ve got a hot date celebrating her 40th reunion and I’ve been invited to tag along. Hope I can keep up with a younger woman.

Michael (eat) Moore made it to town but was too busy selling books at the Brazos Bookstore to make it to the D’oH rally. The poor dears. Major down twinkles.

much shorter local riding today as we get lil MsQueenBee & Ryder ready for their court appearance next week – THIS is what it’s ALL about in the re-empowerment process.
Not sure if I ever shared our mission statement:
Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) exists with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. We exist as a body of Bikers to empower children to not feel afraid of the world in which they live. We stand ready to lend support to our wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization. We work in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. We desire to send a clear message to all involved with the abused child that this child is part of our organization, and that we are prepared to lend our physical and emotional support to them by affiliation, and by our physical presence. We stand at the ready to shield these children from further abuse. We do not condone the use of violence or physical force in any manner, however, if circumstances arise such that we are the only obstacle preventing a child from further abuse, we stand ready to be that obstacle.
OOOOOOOOOO-RAH!!!

G’Morning all
Katfish- Kudos for standing up for the kids. When we were younger, we took in several teens (probably about 20) that needed help. We still keep in touch with several of them. One just took and passed the bar exams.
Thanks for “taking our place”.

Warning: Do not use or open or, especially, try to print anything in the SmileBox format from your friends or relatives.
We use only web-based email programs here as an extra layer of protection. I don’t want Microsoft or anyone else dumping weird, malicious mail into our computers.
I have both Avast Pro and Malwarebytes Pro antivirus and anti-malware programs running in tandem. Neither one recognized or blocked this problem.
Her Highness received an invitation to a baby shower from an old friend in her AOL inbox. She opened it and read it online and all was fine because it was off-site. This morning HH decided to print the invitation, bringing a file into her computer for printing. When she did this, it closed the browser and would not let it re-open.
When I checked the program files, the invitation software called SmileBox, had installed an 8 MB program and a toolbar on the computer. It had also hijacked the homepage designation. When I tried to uninstall these programs, it locked that feature up also and blocked any access to Help menus.
The one thing I did not want to do was restart the computer because surely that would unleash even more crap. So I went into System Restore and restored the unit to 5 days ago.
Problem solved, but close call.
The Smile Box
These guys are a “legit” company out of Redmond, Washington and they brag on the net about surreptitiously loading this crap on people’s computers. Obviously, if you want to leverage your effect, you would sucker people into using your free invitation software because they will be sending it out to dozens or hundreds of others who will open the mail because it is from a friend or relative.
They claim to offer software for cutesy invitations, photo albums, scrapbooks, etc and this is the way they trick people. I mean these are nice, warmhearted craftsy folks, right ?
What I would do to the ba$tards cannot be printed on this site.

#14 Katfish: The union “meadow muffins” went after tooth and nail to be sure that NO ONE looked into any union financial arrangements. Ifn we actually had a Justice Department instead of a legal bully arm and cover up department, they would take the actions of the union in this case as probable cause and engage in a full scale investigation and prosecute those who went after the woman AND the union officials that were stealing money. Ifn they weren’t stealing, why would they care if the books were audited?

There is nothing wrong with credit unions or using them for checking accounts. We use a local bank that has 2 locations. The employees, executives, and stockholders are all local people and the bank is very good about helping the town and businesspeople here. I have no desire to punish them by not doing business with them just because I am angry with Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan and Citicorp.
Like I said before – Denninger needs to relax before he has a stroke.

#15 Katfish:
I’ve been using a Credit Union for all of my banking needs for the last 25 years. They seem to function much like the small local banks that I remember from my youth. When I walk in they recognize me, I can usually set up a loan over the phone, and, if a problem develops (rarely) they work to resolve it immediately.
Mharper, I get online bill pay and online transfers. Not sure if I could get online images, I’ve never asked. I also never pay checking account fees – regardless of my balance.
The only thing I haven’t been able to do at my credit union was to set up a checking account for a trust fund.

TO THE VAST, UNPAID, RESEARCH STAFF:
Could one of you erstwhile engineer/nuclear physicist/brain surgeon types please point me to a competent source of instruction? I would like to learn how to calculate the wind load on the side of a structure or vehicle. What I am specifically looking for is: How much wind would it take to overturn our 5th wheel RV, The Gallopin’ Ghetto? I have googled ‘til my fingers cramped trying to find a formula but nothing comes up that is a direct answer to my query.

Good afternoon Hamsters. Recovering from yesterday’s 31 and glittering frost all over everything at Sunrise, and this morning brought us a sedate 36 and dew all over everything, shining but no glitter. And regular fronts are on the way at last. Thank you, Lord.
We’re having low spots in the yard filled in that–when we had regular rain–collected and held water, killing the grass. Last night the woodsy creatures tracked all over a large area and left interesting and rather inscrutable footprints and a couple of half-hearted holes. Suspect the same will happen tonight. Our plan is to sod the bare spots with Amerishade St. Augustine, which is more shade tolerant than regular SA. We had trees thinned last fall, and the original SA slowly crept into the dead spots over summer but is not going to be the best solution. Of course everything could benefit from regular rainfall.
Got this from a friend in North Carolina who recently found it, attributed to Sir Winston Churchill. After being defeated by Clement Atlee in 1945, and after he took office, Chruchill remarked: “An empty taxi pulled up to No. 10 Downing Street and Atlee got out.” That can be altered to what we got on Inauguration Day, 2009, “An empty linousine arrived at the White House and Barack Obama got out.” Love it.

Wish I could take credit for the variation on the Churchill theme, but my friend is the brain behind it. Clever fellow he is, and solid conservative who is a long-distance (North Carolina) member of Greater Fort Bend County TP. 🙂 Couldn’t find a TP group he liked around Asheville and so joined ours and finds it most informative. -

Pakistani police said a suicide bomber targeting the country’s Shiite minority killed himself in a premature explosion in southwestern Pakistan Saturday.
Hamid Shakeel, deputy inspector general in Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province, said the incident took place on the outskirts of the city, the Associated Press reported.
A man in his twenties was heading toward a Shiite mosque when his explosive-rigged suicide vest went off prematurely, just short of his apparent target, he said.

Although some businesses have been targeted and vandalized by Occupy Oakland protesters, there is at least one businessman who refuses to be intimidated.
Phil Tagami is a well-known Oakland developer. Late Wednesday night, instead of going over paperwork or brokering deals, he was forced to defend a downtown building where he personally oversaw $50 million worth of renovations.
He also has an office there.
“We had people who attempted to break into our building,” the landmark Rotunda Building on Frank Ogawa Plaza outside City Hall, Tagami said. According to comments he made to the San Francisco Chronicle, Tagami grabbed a shotgun that he usually keeps at home, went down to the ground floor and “discouraged them.”

An interesting concept I read on Karl Denninger’s Market Ticker – He advocates us ALL yanking / killing our bank accounts in favor of doing bidness only with Credit Unions………………………..what say Yall?
We recently moved our accounts from JPM to Prosperity Bank. While I understand the intent of the call to move your money out of large banks into credit unions, I can tell you we are completely satisfied with Prosperity. I’ve neither heard nor read anything to indicate that Prosperity Bank is anything but an upstanding institution. We will be keeping our accounts exactly where they are.
As to this:
I have some features on my BofA account that I’m not sure I could get, or get free anyway, at a credit union. Online bill pay, online transfer between checking/saving, online image of cancelled checks, etc.
You can get all of those services you mention (at no cost) with Prosperity. I would certainly not let that be a reason to keep my money in a bank like BoA. As much as I dislike JPM, my impression from reading and speaking with others is that BoA is even worse.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it looks like Prosperity has 3 locations in Houston and none are close to me. Although I do 99.9% of my banking online, someone occasionally sends me a pesky check calling for a personal visit. I like my bank’s location since I selected it in 1983, when it was a University Savings branch. -

Although I do 99.9% of my banking online, someone occasionally sends me a pesky check calling for a personal visit. I like my bank’s location since I selected it in 1983, when it was a University Savings branch. -
mh42,
There are a lot more than 3 locations in the Houston area:
http://www.prosperitybanktx.com/loc-houston-region.aspx
I do completely understand the convenience factor. It’s one reason I stuck with JPM as long as I did. For me though, there are a couple of Prosperity locations conveniently close to home, and one close enough to work that I can literally walk there in just a few minutes. It was an easy transition for us to make.

The dang’d ol’ innernet is just freaking awesome. Fixed an engine miss on Sweetie’s Jeep today with the help of Algore’s invention but tonight it developed a high idle. Type in the question on Google and before I finish, the question (and answer) is already there.
Awesome times we live in.

51 Bonecrusher:
Thanks for your help. I looked at the links you provided and the links that linked to those links. My mathematical savoir faire is such that I run out of fingers and toes long before I get a conclusive answer. I did discover a couple of PhD dissertations that helped a lot. As a pilot, I have always been concious of the trailer’s limitations in a crosswind but I was curious to find out specifically how much wind I could expect to tolerate while still maintaining enough control to avoid becoming a hazard to others.
One thing I learned today is that the trailer actually gets “lighter” at increased speed thanks to aerodynamic lift attributed of the shape of the roof. That’s part of the reason why slower speeds yield increased control in higher winds. My tires are rated for only 65 mph and I NEVER exceed that speed while hitched.

Wow, I see what you mean! When I searched for “Prosperity Bank” + Houston, google only drew 3 spots. I see the one closest to me is in Spring Branch about 5 miles away. Unfortunately there is nothing else in that area that I would be going for. -

NASCAR took an unprecedented step Saturday morning at Texas Motor Speedway when it parked Kyle Busch for his remaining two races this weekend for “aggressive driving” in Friday night’s Camping World Truck Series race.

Well, myself and my date went to her 40th reunion at Rice yesterday. It was about a 60 mile drive to pick her up, another 25 or so to the stadium, and then a return after dark, but overall a trip well worth it. BTW, Rice did beat UTEP in what was an overall good, clean (I think only one or two flags were thrown the entire game). If you have kids and haven’t experienced Rice football, you are really missing something. It’s very kid friendly and they let them run around all over the field before and after the game, etc. It’s really amazing how much catching up there is to do when you haven’t seen an old friend for 20 years or so. From the time I arrived back home until the snoring started can probably be measured in milliseconds – these younger women are just hard to keep up with these days.

I caught some Dennis Prager last night and he was talking to a Carnegie-Mellon prof about the EU debt crisis. An interesting comment was that workers in southern Europe (Greece, Portugal, Spain and Italy were mentioned, in that order) are nowhere near as productive as German workers. They want to work fewer hours and retire sooner, but they also want to be paid the same amount as the more productive Germans. They want to be given a lifestyle they have not earned.

Instapundit’s Dr. Glenn Reynolds in the Washington Examiner today:
It’s not that the education system is our only public-spending failure, it’s just that the Occupy movement has done such a persuasive job of illustrating the particular failures of the education system.
Or course, the Occupy movement has helped the Tea Party in another way: By keeping lefties busy. While the occupiers have been holding their drum circles, the Tea Party movement — now long past the mass-rally stage — has been going about the less conspicuous work of registering voters and organizing.
As I wrote back in 2010, “Rallies without follow-through are just rallies. And the Tea Party movement is now following through with the grunt work of politics: Organizing precincts, waging primary battles, registering voters, and compiling mailing lists.”
Rallies don’t win elections. Neither do drum circles. Organizing does. Let Occupiers and Tea Partiers alike take note.

Good morning Hamsters. Leave it to Mark Levin to deliver a stemwinder speech that oh so elegantly slices and dices the liberal/progressive/ marxists and their useful idiot acolytes. Love the Michael Moore knockoff attire, just too delicious.
The Cain-Gingrich debate last night was what a debate ought to be: civilized, informative, and instructive. Yea for the good Tea Party Movement guys for arranging it and to C-Span for carrying it live. Again, Texans lead the way in getting to the essence of things. The heartbeat of Don’t Mess With Texas accelerates and scares the pants off the libs every time we do something like this. 🙂
Unfortunately local reporting of the event on Channel 11’s football game delayed 10 o’clock news swooped in to focus on Herman Cain’s purportedly making several anonymous women “uncomfortable” 15 years ago. This fiasco reporting casts Channel 11 close to the abyss of yellow journalism. The substance–and there was great substance–of the debate got tossed aside. Shame on Channel 11, shame on CBS which undoubtedly was pleased with it. I doubt the other stations were any different.

I’m still recovering from the quilt show. I just uploaded my pictures to Flickr and I’ll be posting a thread sometime…when I can. I felt a little vertigo-ous this morning, probably from being so tired. I need to go get some rent and then stop off at the store for some ribs to barbecue, so we’ll see.
My friend and I (Lovely didn’t make it, dangit) walked that floor from about 10:30 to 1:30, when I was about to fall out from not eating. We had started pushing faster around 12:45, trying to get through the quilts before we stopped to eat, but I just couldn’t make it. I didn’t want to fall out and have medical come get me, because then we’d NEVER get through the exhibit! We stopped to eat, then hit the vendor floor. I failed to find this year’s Santa, which was disappointing; usually I can find one I like, but even the Jim Shore designs I saw this year didn’t “talk to me”. The chosen Santa has got to make me wanna buy him. There’s only been one or two exceptions to the “talk to me” rule. I’m not picky where I get ’em from. One I got at a dollar store and the most expensive ones – the Jim Shore models – I’ve gotten at the quilt show. I have old world Santas and a snow skiing Santa. I still have time. It’s not even Thanksgiving yet.
Anyway, we heard the “we’re closing” announcement and had still missed about three vendor rows and about three quilt rows. One day is just not enough.
You’ll see why, when I get the posting up. I think I’m well enough to drive now, so I’m headin’ out. Catch up later.

I submitted this question to The Physicist:
“I would like to know how to calculate the wind speed needed to blow my 5th wheel RV over. Is there a formula I can use to figure out the answer?”The Physicist replied:
“Depends on the properties of your rv, weight, shape, etc”I guess one gets what one pays for and free advice is usually worth the price.

Feds trying to grab private property in MO.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, citing restrictions on private developments around dams, says thousands of residences, decks, patios and boathouses appear to encroach on land belonging to the hydroelectric project in violation of federal regulations.
/snip
The dispute pits the government’s rules for hydroelectric projects against the potential vagaries of land records and private transactions that go back more than 80 years. Riley and other property owners say they have legal deeds to their land that permitted construction. The agency says it has regulations protecting the lake’s recreation, scenery and environment against development. This is yet another black mark against an overly aggressive federal govt. Will the foul “O” step in to save the day and look like a hero? Did he instruct them to start a bunch of crapola so that he could step in and try to bribe the state of MO into a win for him in the upcoming election? I don’t put anything out of the realm of possibility with this bunch other than behaving in a rational reasonable constitutional manner.

I woke up this morning feeling really good after getting that extra hour of sleep.
Sat down in my favorite chair with my morning muffin and java and started flipping through the channels with the ole remote and inadvertently landed on Channel 2.
Meet the Demonic Press was on and right there in the middle of the screen was MSNBC’s Obumma loving tingly legged spitter.
Seconds later I was astonished to find out how chewed up muffin and coffee can become dangerous projectiles when upchucked in a violent reaction upon viewing the image of the tingly legged spitter.
Needless to say I changed the channel quicker than the Disciples of Goebbels Media can gin up another story about sexual harassment and Herman Cain.

timdenchanter, In case you have not found an answer,
A wind load analysis is a bit pricey to have an engineer do it. We were putting up some pole lights at a soccer field and the City of Houston petty tyrant inspector wanted a wind load analysis. Our company has been in business since 1954 and owns one of the oldest master’s electrical license in this town. We had ever heard of this before. The short version of this story is we found a firm in Louisiana that would do it and provide the documentation. Trying to explain the unexpected cost to the customer is another story. -

All I was askin’ for was a formula but I already figgered out how to get the answer myself anyway. Next time we have a tropical storm, I’ll just park the Gallopin’ Ghetto so the wind is perpendicular to the long axis of the trailer. Then when it rolls over I’ll jump out with my handy dandy wind gauge and see what the wind speed is.
As one might say: Simple

Anything with the words CITY OF HOUSTON and LICENSE or PERMIT in it is, by definition, expensive. One of my duties in another life was keeping up with the permits for one of Exxon’s office/research facilities. We finally took all the permits to the CoH permit office and had them each renewed on the same day so they all expired at one time. It cost a few extra bucks that year but it eliminated a whole lot of headaches and overlooked expirations. All the permits were framed and hung on a wall which they covered from one end to the other. Whoda thunk you would need so many permits but they kept finding things that we couldn’t do until we got another permit.
I think there is a Spanish term for it that roughly translates to “the touch.”

I think there is a Spanish term for it that roughly translates to “the touch.” -
Over and out! Headed to IAH to pick up the marathoners.
Happy Birthday Mr. Bonecrusher.

Happy football weekend in this household since U. of Wisconsin and Green Bay both won.
The LSU-Alabama game was a heart thumper, and both teams should be proud of how they played. -

Many thanks for all the kind b-day wishes. I shot 100 from the blues on the Masters at Bear Creek, first time I have swung a club in at least 6 months. I just got a 90 minute massage.
Life is real good! I am a blessed man. -
