Wednesday All Souls Day Open Comments

Today is All Souls’ Day, the day the Church celebrates the faithful departed, those who we believe have gone to be with God, but have not been formally canonized by the Church. These are also the souls that may continue to harbor the stain of venial sin and must be cleansed before they can be welcomed into full fellowship with God.

The theological basis for the feast is the doctrine that the souls which, on departing from the body, are not perfectly cleansed from venial sins, or have not fully atoned for past transgressions, are debarred from the Beatific Vision, and that the faithful on earth can help them by prayers, almsdeeds and especially by the sacrifice of the Mass.

This is the post-death form of the sacrament of reconciliation, also known known as confession & penance. The Church prays for these souls, that they may quickly be cleased of their sins and be united with God in Heaven.

    G’Morning all

Happy All Soul’s Day, Day of the Dead and all of the other names it goes by. I find it interesting about religions that that even before Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, Shintoism and all the others, that humans as far back the Stone Age (and maybe even further back) have always had a concept about a higher power. That leads me to believe that the Divinely created Universe and it’s inhabitants have always had the knowledge of God and they expressed it in the available communications of their time. Makes for a kinda awesome God in my humble opinion.

    Sheriff Wright is right.

MSNBC Host: Why Should People Have Guns When We Have Cops
    Katie Pavlich
    News Editor, Townhall

As I always say, you can be a victim, or not, the choice is yours.

Yesterday, Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright of South Carolina told women during a news conference to obtain their concealed weapons permit in order to better protect themselves from rapists and criminals in the area.

“I want you to get a concealed weapons permit,” Sheriff Chuck Wright said at the Monday news conference, as reported by TV station WYFF. “Don’t get Mace. Get a firearm.”

The sheriff alleged that a 46-year-old man named Walter Lance abducted a woman while she was walking her dog Sunday afternoon and attempted to rape her.

Lance was arrested and charged with kidnapping, first-degree criminal sexual conduct and grand larceny, the Spartanburg Herald-Journal reported.

In the news conference, Wright said Lance had been convicted of 20 crimes dating back to 1983, including disorderly conduct, domestic violence, assault and battery with intent to kill, and resisting arrest, among others.

“I can tell you that our form of justice is not making it,” he stated.

“I’ve had liberals call me and tell me, ‘The chain gang is not going to work.’ Well, let me inform you that your form of justice isn’t working either.”

However, unsurprisingly MSNBC fill-in host Craig Melvin seems to be more worried about the fate of potential rapists, rather than the safety of women. During an interview with Sheriff Wright today, Melvin suggested law enforcement should be the only necessary protection for women and society against criminals. At the beginning of the interview, Melvin asked:

Sheriff, if law enforcement is charged with protecting the public, then, then, then why should that not be sufficient? Why should folks have to go out and get guns and arm themselves if we’ve got cops?

    To which Wright responded:

We can’t be everywhere, and we are a fool if we tell everybody that we can take care of all of our problems.

Later in the interview Melvin has the audacity to suggest a woman defending herself against rape is “implying guilt rather than innocence.”

Melvin: If women are shooting potential attackers, aren’t they presuming guilt before innocence? What if a woman kills an attacker? Isn’t that opening another whole legal can of worms?

Sheriff Wright: Well, it’s easy to fix that. Just don’t attack a woman.

Melvin was also shocked to learn the Sheriff suggested women use a .45 calibur handgun to get the job done. What did he think the Sheriff was going to suggest? Spitballs? A rubber band gun?

Last night Mitt Romney was interviewed by ESPN and he came out squarely in favor of the Crimson Tigers.

From the not thinking things through dept.

I’ve had a possum eating the cat food in my backyard for a while now. I tried scaring it away several times but it comes back in about 2 days. I then shot it a few times with my CO2 pistol but the 50′ from my back door to the food dish is out of “kill or maim” range for it. Yesterday I bought a live catch trap for it. The one recommended for possums and coons cost $70.00 and the one for cats and rabbits cost $30.00. I say to myself, “Self, your possum isn’t any bigger than a cat so I don’t need the big trap.” I baited it and set it out, and sure enough, the possum went in, ate the bait and walked out of the trap. I forgot to take into account the thick stiff tail they have. It sticks out of the back of the trap and when it triggers, it hits his tail and stops the latch from locking in.

O.K., go back and buy the one that’s taken that into account. You can tease me and whip me, just don’t nominate me for a Darwin Award.

Bloggers rejoice, Copyright Troll being forced to pay settlement against itself.

Looks like it’s time to turn out the lights on Righthaven. The US Marshal for the District of Nevada has just been authorized by a federal court to use “reasonable force” to seize $63,720.80 in cash and/or assets from the Las Vegas copyright troll after Righthaven failed to pay a court judgment from August 15.

Good morning Hamsters. Getting warmer in time for the next front tonight. A comfy 56 at 6 and heavy ground fog blanketed the moors out here on the north bank of the Brazos, soupy and spooky in the predawn gloom. Now it’s merely a white gauzy presence at 9; the Sun is busy drawing it upward and clearing the ground.

Went to early vote yesterday afternoon at Pecan Grove Baptist Church on FM 359. The poll workers–bless them–were not very busy, as expected. As of yesterday afternoon there had been only ~220 voters for the entire early voting period up to then. Eeek. I was #27 for yesterday. Lamar CISD has a hefty bond issue for new schools on the ballot as well as the amendments.

Conservatives, get out and vote en masse. We can defeat the spending amendments that appear so innocently described that those who don’t think very deeply can be easily taken in by. West Fort Bend County has explosive growrh ongoing, subdivisions popping up like mushrooms. It’s clear new schools will eventually be needed, but if temporary arrangements must be made to fill the need until our economy recovers, so be it. Folks out here can’t afford to hold the bag for another bond issue right now. We have the 65+ exemptions, but most of our neighbors do not and still have mortgages and growing children.

From BigGovernment.com: The Police are just a wittle bit confused

We represent the 645 police officers who work hard every day to protect the citizens of Oakland. … We are severely understaffed with many City beats remaining unprotected by police during the day and evening hours.

As your police officers, we are confused.

On Tuesday, October 25th, we were ordered by Mayor Quan to clear out the encampments at Frank Ogawa Plaza and to keep protesters out of the Plaza. We performed the job that the Mayor’s Administration asked us to do, being fully aware that past protests in Oakland have resulted in rioting, violence and destruction of property.

Then, on Wednesday, October 26th, the Mayor allowed protesters back in – to camp out at the very place they were evacuated from the day before.

To add to the confusion, the Administration issued a memo…to all City workers in support of the “Stop Work” strike scheduled for Wednesday, giving all employees, except for police officers, permission to take the day off.

That’s hundreds…encouraged to take off work to participate in the protest against “the establishment.” But aren’t the Mayor and her Administration part of the establishment they are paying City employees to protest? Is it the City’s intention to have City employees on both sides of a skirmish line?

It is all very confusing to us.

Meanwhile, a message has been sent to all police officers: Everyone…must show up for work on Wednesday. This is also being paid for by Oakland taxpayers. Last week’s events alone cost Oakland taxpayers over $1 million.

The Mayor and her Administration are beefing up police presence for Wednesday’s work strike they are encouraging and even “staffing,” spending… taxpayer dollars for additional police presence – at a time when the Mayor is also asking Oakland residents to vote on an $80 parcel tax to bail out the City’s failing finances.

All of these mixed messages are confusing.

We love Oakland and just want to do our jobs to protect Oakland residents. We respectfully ask the citizens of Oakland to join us in demanding that our City officials…make sound decisions and take responsibility for these decisions. Oakland is struggling – we need real leaders NOW who will step up and lead – not send mixed messages. Thank you for listening.

I agree. These poor guys are getting it from every direction.

    From the comments:

Step 1: Lower your expectations. Don’t expect anything coherent to come from the city gov’t.
Step 2: Repeat step 1 for the state gov’t
Step 3: Repeat step 1 for the federal gov’t

You’lll feel much less confused. Not better, but less confused.

    How true. Sad, but true.

I came across the story belatedly of the Sugarland controversy where the Hyatt hotel there canceled Pam Geller’s appearance for a speech a couple of weeks ago. The meeting was moved to the Sugarland community center at the last minute.

It seems the person behind all this was Farha Ahmed, the local Islamic activist and recently failed candidate for Sugarland City Council. Ahmed was involved with and at one time appointed as counsel by Aafia Siddiqui, the Pakistani “Lady Al Qaeda” chemical weapons expert convicted for planning to bomb the Statue of Liberty, among other sites.

Just got this Halloween joke from my sister:
A man was walking home alone late one foggy night, when behind him he
    hears:

    BUMP…

    BUMP…

    BUMP…

Walking faster, he looks back and through the fog he makes out the image
of an upright casket banging its way down the middle of the street
    toward him.

    BUMP…

    BUMP…

    BUMP…

Terrified, the man begins to run toward his home, the casket bouncing
    quickly behind him

    FASTER…

    FASTER…

    BUMP…

    BUMP…

    BUMP…

He runs up to his door, fumbles with his keys, opens the door, rushes
in, slams and locks the door behind him.

However, the casket crashes through his door, with the lid of the casket
    clapping

    clappity-BUMP…

    Clappity-BUMP…

    clappity-BUMP…

On his heels, the terrified man runs.

Rushing upstairs to the bathroom, the man locks himself in. His heart is
pounding; his head is reeling; his breath is coming in sobbing gasps.

With a loud CRASH the casket breaks down the door.

    Bumping and clapping toward him.

The man screams and reaches for something, anything, But all he can find
is a bottle of cough syrup!

Desperate, he throws the cough syrup at the casket…

    And,

(hopefully you’re really ready for this!!!)

    The coffin stops!

Indeed she says this global warming standstill since the end of the Nineties – which has been completely unexpected – has wide-reaching consequences for the causes of climate change and has already led many climate scientists to start looking at alternative factors that may have contributed to global warming,

other than carbon gas emissions. In particular she has mentioned the influence of clouds, natural temperature cycles and solar radiation.

    November 1, 2011, 11:36 pm

Colorado voters have rejected an attempt to raise state income and sales taxes temporarily to support public schools and colleges, The Denver Post declared Tuesday night as preliminary election results were coming in. Supporters of the measure, known as Proposition 103, had hoped for its passage to help make up for steep cuts in state spending on education and for the loss of federal stimulus support. But with 61 percent of precincts reporting, Coloradans were voting heavily against the measure, with 35 percent in favor and 65 percent against.

After all the realignment dust settles Mr SEC propose realignment of the divisions based on their mascots:

    Cats & Dogs Division

    Auburn
    Georgia
    Kentucky
    LSU
    Mississippi State
    Missouri
    Tennessee

    Original Thinkers Division

    Alabama
    Arkansas
    Florida
    Mississippi
    South Carolina
    Texas A&M
    Vanderbilt

He probably doesn’t realize A&M’s mascot is a collie, but that would make for uneven divisions. If they ever go to 16 teams they could move A&M into the C&D division and add two to the OT division.

Obviously, the people of Colorado didn’t believe the politicians either. The news breaking in the last week that total college student debt in the US has exceeded 1 trillion dollars surely didn’t help the pro-side.

We had one visitor Halloween night about 7:30, but he didn’t ring the bell. Just checked out the front porch and ambled down the sidewalk to the driveway. He was a cute juvenile racoon and probably munched on some acorns or pecans from trees in the front yard that got water this summer. I guess all racoons major in cute….

Yea for the sensible folk in Colorado for turning down more spending for schools. Bet that shocked all the California libs who migrated there and turned the state from red to blue and now to purple on the way back to red in 2012. 🙂

Here is a story for everyone…

A local government entity which has limited bonding capacity is going out asking for more bonding capacity. This entity has been around for 30+ years and has only issued 14million of the 20 million in bonding capacity. So why you ask is this entity going and asking for more like so many other government agencies? Well they have in the near future almost 20 million in repairs and improvements that need to be made so that they can continue to provide the services that they have been charged with providing. Also they are asking that certain restrictions on where tax revenue that they collect be changed to allow them some more flexability with covering expenses as well as debt payment.

Would you vote for or against these requests?

#25, Texpat. Pamela checked into the Hyatt the day before the event. They yanked the room for the book signing the next morning. The Sugar Land Community Center did not exactly welcome us with open arms. They refused to open the doors at the agreed time and made setting up on time difficult. Then they said we could not sell anything. One of the members bought several cases of Pamela’s books for sale and signing. We had to hand most out with a promise to pay on the website later.

I think Pamela enjoyed it. She had an SRO crowd, lots of time on Q&A, everybody was polite, she signed books, talked to every one in line and posed for pictures.
