Today is All Souls’ Day, the day the Church celebrates the faithful departed, those who we believe have gone to be with God, but have not been formally canonized by the Church. These are also the souls that may continue to harbor the stain of venial sin and must be cleansed before they can be welcomed into full fellowship with God.
The theological basis for the feast is the doctrine that the souls which, on departing from the body, are not perfectly cleansed from venial sins, or have not fully atoned for past transgressions, are debarred from the Beatific Vision, and that the faithful on earth can help them by prayers, almsdeeds and especially by the sacrifice of the Mass.
This is the post-death form of the sacrament of reconciliation, also known known as confession & penance. The Church prays for these souls, that they may quickly be cleased of their sins and be united with God in Heaven.
