Tuesday Wide World of Weird Sports Open Comments

There are many athletic competitions around the world. Most of them are relatively familiar:

  • Footraces of various distances (100m to 26.2mi)
  • Soccer
  • Various skiing events (cross-country, downhill, jumping)
  • Basketball
  • Jumping (high, long, triple)
  • Field events (shot put, javelin, hammer throw)
  • Gymnastics
  • Swimming

There are other sports that are more regional, more obscure, more unusual, weirder.
Curling, which apparently involves yelling at a rock sliding along on some ice:

Crab racing – people just want to see the crabs crash.

Some, we all know the rules for, like RPS:

Cheese racing – are you faster than a cheddar?

Then there’s the ever-popular dwile flonking:

Buzkashi, aka dead goat polo:

You left out the most popular contest engaged in by millions throughout the world on a daily basis – that of sport farting. And of course, there’s always chugging beer and dwarf tossing. The list of competitive sporting events is virtually limitless, yet our liberal leaders want to eliminate the concept of winners and losers and focus instead on feeling good by just “participating” (which includes watching, thinking about, talking about, etc. I think). While solo farting can make you feel good, there’s nothing that feels better than winning a spontaneous competitive event. Wanna pull my finger?

Truth stranger than fiction – washed up lefty actress Susan Sarandon flat-out calls the Pope a Nazi and nothing happens, after washed up country singer Hank Jr. loses his 20 year MNF gig for an analogy involving Hitler and Netanyahu. Not going unnoticed is this:

Meanwhile, the American Nazi Party on Sunday issued a statement of support for the Occupy Wall Street crowd, which during its early days in Zuccotti Park earned a visit from an education-seeking Sarandon. Sarandon’s resume also includes a turn in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,” the premiere of which was attended by billionaire Warren Buffett, who thinks that rich people should pay higher taxes.

    Who’s really the Nazi?

When Republicans took control of the House in January, they pledged to make deep cuts in federal spending, and in April they succeeded in passing a bill advertised as cutting $38 billion from fiscal 2011’s budget. Then in August, they pushed for a deal to cut an additional $2.4 trillion over the next decade.

Some analysts have blamed these spending cuts for this year’s economic slowdown.

    But wait! There’s more:

In fact, in the first nine months of this year, federal spending was $120 billion higher than in the same period in 2010, the data show. That’s an increase of almost 5%. And deficits during this time were $23.5 billion higher.

We all knew this was going on. Looks like the congressional republican leadership has co-opted the Dem’s playbook that says a decrease in the rise of a budget is a cut.

Republicans too stupid to understand the Constitution

We have this spectacularly moronic proposed legislation from Republican Mike Rogers, 3rd District of Alabama. Rogers is adamant about all those social issues and I’m sure he shows up at those Tea Party rallies, but he is so profligate with taxpayer money, he earned a 23% rating from Citizens Against Government Waste and a sad 50% rating from the American Conservative Union.

But, by golly, he’s gonna protect those poor TSA folks from anybody making fun of them on YouTube or Vimeo.

This bill would expand the current 18 U.S.C. § 709 to include the use of certain symbols, words, and acronyms relating to the Federal Air Marshals and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). This is part of a larger authorization bill for the TSA. It would be a crime for a person or a corporation to, without written permission, use the words, acronyms, or symbols of those agencies on apparel or in a publication “in a matter that is reasonably calculated to convey the impression that the wearer of the item of apparel is acting pursuant to the legal authority of” the agencies or “to convey the impression” that the written materials “is approved, endorsed, or authorized by” the agencies. A violation of 18 U.S.C. § 709 by a business entity is punishable by up to a maximum fine under Title 18, U.S. Code. A violation by an officer or member participating or “knowingly acquiescing” in a business entity violation, or a violation by an individual, is punishable by imprisonment for up to one year and a maximum fine under Title 18.

So, ladies and gentlemen, if you and your friends or the Saturday Night Live cast or any comedy group produce a satirical video of the TSA, you can all be charged with a felony and be fined or imprisoned, or both.

This Mike Rogers needs to be fired.

Seems like it’s a pretty clear-cut First Amendment case.

Besides, humor is best if there’s an element of truth. Calling the TSA a bunch of dolts who couldn’t find a weapon if a pistol was laying on the x-ray conveyor by itself because they’re too busy feeling up a 3 year-old kid looking for a nuclear weapon is pretty true.

Greek unions are practicing for what’s gonna happen if they don’t get their collective cr@p together.

Greece braces for shutdown as austerity vote nears

They’re planning to shut the country down for a couple of days, which is what’s gonna happen – for a lot longer – if they don’t start getting serious about turning their economy around.

In one sense, I hope Greece just goes down in flames. Not that I have anything against the Greek people and such an outcome would cause them and likely many others across Europe and around the world a terrific amount of pain, but there are too many people here and elsewhere that just don’t understand how the system works and that you cannot continue to squeeze a dry sponge and expect to get any water out of it.

Aside from the civically suicidal effects of overcriminalization at the federal level, this amendment to a larger TSA bill, should it become law, will be challenged in federal court and eventually ruled unconstitutional. There is abundant precedent by SCOTUS establishing public figures and institutions as fair and open targets for satire.

But why waste all this time, untold taxpayer funds and private monies to rid ourselves of something that should never have been ? The attorneys involved will be enriched, the taxpayers further in debt and private citizens somewhere will be poorer for having to fight this nonsense. And yet, no consequence of any kind will redound to Rep. Mike Rogers for having wrought this havoc.

Good morning Hamsters. We have Windchill. Started off with overcast and a still 71 at 6, and then the front’s leading edge rolled in and the temp just kept on dropping to 63. Wind gets stronger as the morning goes on, blustery enough to take the porch banners down so they won’t blow away. Leaves and acorns fly across the yard in the gusts; branches sway not so gently. The fountain splashes overboard in the steady breeze and enthusiastically in gusts. Will have to put in two more gallons by day’s end. Fall is here. Thank you, Lord.

Gather round and share the sheer, stark terror of flying a two-seater CAF Canadian Hawk combat training aircraft as you ascend from 70 feet, at the end of the runway in Moosejaw, Sakatchewan, and suck a big goose into the intake of your left engine.

You are too low to eject and live so you hope and pray you can maintain enough power to rise to 3,000 feet in order for you and your student to eject and hopefully live to see another day.

Maybe I am missing something, but the wording looks like it is extending the provisions about impersonating an officer to TSA and restricting things like satire or humor. Precisely my point.

I was rebutted on an email thread for misunderstanding the intent of Rep. Rogers and my reply is this is not rocket science; say what you mean and mean what you say.

The American people are under daily assault by the federal government via regulatory and statutory agents of the executive branch by an avalanche of both civil and criminal legislation written by morons or at best, lazy elected officials. They seem incapable of writing laws that are concise, unambiguous and reconciled with constitutional principle.

I am particularly concerned with the vague, recondite nature of laws passed over the last three decades which have enabled a veritable army of prosecutors, regulators and agency counsels to create a living hell for citizens, property owners and business people in this country because the lawmaker who originated them didn’t bother to make very clear the limits of the intent and scope of that law.

An email I received from Fat Albert regarding this issue:

Speaking of corrupted laws – a few statistics:

The current Code of Federal Regulations comprises more than 157,000 pages (typically 8 pt text, double column) contained in 50 plus volumes, that take up some 35 linear feet of shelf space. These regulations are written by bureaucratic lawyers who take the “laws” passed by Congress and turn them into actual regulations. Because they are written by lawyers, to interpret laws written by other lawyers, and they are designed to be enforced by still other lawyers, they cannot be interpreted or understood by normal rational human beings. In fact, it’s quite common for different lawyers, from the same agency, to disagree on how to properly interpret a regulation that their own agency was responsible for writing.

These so called “administrative laws” impact every single aspect of our day to day existence. And, by some estimates, compliance costs about $1.8 trillion, every single year

I am hoping John Boehner will continue to live up to his promise to restore independence and authority to House committee chairs that was taken away by Gingrich and perpetuated by Hastert. I am for a less centralized authority in the most important chamber of the most important branch of our federal government.

It is high time these chairmen took a stronger role in reviewing these laws proposed by members for content and coherence. This bill should be tabled by the relevant chairman and sent back (with some tutors) to Rep. Rogers to be re-written.

The newer generation certainly has them, but I don’t know whether this particular aircraft did or what its age was. Even with the zero/zero ejection, I think the pilot was trying to give them some space and even then, the pilot suffered some serious injuries with the canopy destruction system and his parachute. The student pilot got off with minor injuries.

Even worse is the way in which regulations from different agencies overlap. Occasionally they cancel each other out, but more often they make things much worse.

I remember a time when I was in a meeting involving the EPA, the DOT and the TCEQ. The meeting involved the final disposition of some empty 55 gal steel drums that had originally contained pesticides.

The EPA was adamant that the drums must be recycled – they could not be disposed of.
The DOT was equally adamant – the drums must be disposed of, they could not be re-cycled.
The TCEQ didn’t care, but was dead set against the company storing the empty drums on-site.

When I pointed out that the only way to satisfy all three agencies was to cease doing business, all 3 representatives looked at me and agreed that that might indeed be best for all concerned.

Some people get the best jobs and the rest of us…well…

This year Mallucci conducted a three-month study to pinpoint the exact factors that make a woman’s breasts attractive. Titled Concepts In Aesthetic Breast Dimensions: Analysis Of The Ideal Breast, Mallucci’s study analysed the breasts of 100 topless models.

‘For 30 years The Sun has been putting a picture of a topless girl on Page 3 every day, making it one of the paper’s most enduringly popular features,’ explains Mallucci. ‘The fundamental rule is that for a girl to make it on to Page 3, she must have entirely natural breasts.

‘The fact that Page 3 remains as popular now as ever shows that the woman who selects these topless models – and interestingly it is a woman – is doing something right.

‘It made me question what it is that makes readers find these breasts appealing to the eye, and whether there is a common theme between them that might define that.’

OK, So over the years I’ve been through “TQM”,” ISO Umpteen thousand”, “6 Sigma”, “5-S” and now I have been asked forced to go to a 3 DAY CLASS on Kaizen! WTF!
I went to the Orientation today, (1 hour) and the class is on Nov 7-9, since my manager and his manager are going, along with 3 of our engineers, I figgered that I should stay in the lab and mind the store, me being the lowest manager in the bunch, BUTT no, I’ll just be wasting my time…..Sigh, 🙁 The 5 of November is opening day of deer season and we usually leave on Friday and come back on Monday but my huntin’ buddy and I will now have to take separate trucks so I can get back. Crap!

Listen, I am a world class expert on the aesthetics of the human female form with masters degrees in mammarian, gluteals and legs, but nobody asked me to participate in the study and I would have donated my services. Hah !

I didn’t have to suffer through large corporate torture rituals like TQM, Sigma 6, ISO +/-X, 5-S to reach this elevated level of achievement either.

A childhood friend of mine was the executive assistant to the guy who dreamed this crap up. He was in Houston way back when.

She sat down, all excited, at a family dinner one night and explained this new TQM concept to me. I looked at her and said this is complete bulls**t and asked if people were actually dumb enough to pay for this. She just laughed and said, “Yeah, right, but we’re already making a ton of money off of it.”

Occupy Wall Street protesters said yesterday that packs of brazen crooks within their ranks have been robbing their fellow demonstrators blind, making off with pricey cameras, phones and laptops — and even a hefty bundle of donated cash and food.

“Stealing is our biggest problem at the moment,” said Nan Terrie, 18, a kitchen and legal-team volunteer from Fort Lauderdale.

“I had my Mac stolen — that was like $5,500. Every night, something else is gone. Last night, our entire [kitchen] budget for the day was stolen, so the first thing I had to do was . . . get the message out to our supporters that we needed food!”

Crafty cat burglars sneaked into the makeshift kitchen at Zuccotti Park overnight and swiped as much as $2,500 in donated greenbacks from right under the noses of volunteers who’d fallen asleep after a long day whipping up meals for the hundreds of hungry protesters, the volunteers said.

Who’d have thought that a crowd of people demanding the seizure of wealth from banks, corporations, and the wealthy might also have a few thieves? I’m shocked, shocked to find theft occurring in a group that has hijacked private property it refuses to leave. I can’t imagine that a crowd that demands free higher education and the forgiveness of tens of thousands in student debt would also think of someone’s Mac or an iPhone as equally as communal as a college education.

    Haha!

Speaking of CNN and the rest of the Disciples of Goebbels Media, it’s great to see and watch their coverage of the OWStreeters.

They love em and adore em.–I think they especially love all the trash and waste they leave in the streets and parks.

And the reason they love all the trash and waste is because that’s exactly what they report, write and spew day in and day out–Trash and Waste.

So here’s a little number dedicated to the Trash and Waste dispensers, aka the Disciples of Goebbels Media.

One more thang, ’bout my #52 have you heard about “Scaffolding Trailing” I’m guesing that Texpat knows about this, but some years ago a few small companies popped up to offer Scaffolding Training that was Blessed by OSHA and shortly after almost NO COMPANY did their own scaffolding, it is contracted out to companies that meet all the requirements for safety. The reason that I know this is because we use scaffolding occasionally and we have the engineers and technicians that can draw up blue prints and assemble it up to about 40′ for our acoustic chamber.
