Hammy, in your linkie it references flouridation in the water. I have yet to see a legitimate (double blind) study that proves taking flouride internally has any known benefits. I will stipulate that taking flouride topically (as in toothpaste) is a great idea and helps prevent tooth decay. I do not recall seeing a tube of toothpaste that does not have flouride in it. The issue is taking the flouride in water, internally.
At Bonecrusher Manor in Glorious Copperfield, we have an RO system at the kitchen sink and all water that we drink or cook with is rendered flouride and chlorine free; not to mention that it is cleaner, has no odor, and makes clear ice cubes that last longer.
Ice cubes that are white are evidence that there is a lot of crapola in the water. Don’t believe me.. . . . . . . fill a glass with white ice cubes and let them melt and settle for a day or two and look at the bottom of the glass; you will see the crap that was in the water. -

Either that or that they froze quickly, trapping dissolved air as is comes out of solution in the form of tiny bubbles.
Most, if not all, of the “crap” in the bottom of the glass is dissolved minerals. This is typical for well water, as it has been hanging out in close contact with underground rock (which is made of …) for likely a long time. Surface water (e.g. from lakes & rivers) does not exhibit the same degree of dissolved minerals (or “hardness”).
I have yet to see a legitimate (double blind) study that proves taking flouride internally has any known benefits.
It’s not that taking it internally has any benefits, it’s simply that the fluoride in the water has to swish around the teeth as it’s being swallowed. It’s not that it does any good when taken internally; it’s that it does no harm.
Fluorine was/is added to water because it is a very cost-effective way to deliver fluoride to the teeth of children on a widespread basis. Tooth decay rates have dropped substantially since it was implemented. Chlorine is a very cost-effective way to kill bacteria and other living pathogens in water. The amounts used are miniscule for the huge benefit delivered. There are other systems in use and in development that use very high intensity UV light to kill pathogens; I don’t know the relative costs (compared to chlorination) for these systems.

Excellent factual response, Mr. Wagonburner.
The State requires water systems to maintain a chlorine residual of 0.02 ppm throughout the distribution system.
The UV method is usually used as a secondary system, most often on surface water sources. -

That crap in the bottom of the glass is indeed calcium carbonate. Ground water in Texas is very hard. There is no economical method to soften high volumes of water at the well site.
The calcium builds up in your pipes over time, mostly at the fittings, faucets and other restriction points. -

There goes another rubber tree plant; GOP Wins in Race to Replace Weiner.
Democrats suffered a setback Tuesday in a congressional election in New York City, where a district they have held for nearly a century elected a Republican who framed his candidacy as a rebuke to President Barack Obama.
The GOP candidate, Bob Turner, was declared the winner Tuesday night over Democrat David Weprin in an out-of-season contest to succeed Rep. Anthony Weiner, who resigned following a scandal over sexually charged messages he sent to women he met online.
Mr. Turner had 53% of the vote to Mr. Weprin’s 47%, with about two-thirds of the total votes counted in the district that includes parts of Queens and Brooklyn.
A former television executive with no political experience, Mr. Turner had sought to make the race a referendum on Mr. Obama’s record, and it propelled him to victory in a district where Democrats outnumber Republicans 3-to-1.

Pyro: Tooth decay has dropped because of fluoride in the toothpaste. A proper double blind study would have a control group that uses fluoridated toothpaste and non fluoridated water, another group that uses fluoridated water with fluoridated toothpaste, non fluoridated water and non fluoridated toothpaste, and finally lousy oral hygiene with non flouridated water or toothpaste.
I would submit that good dental hygiene practices even without fluoridation will dramatically reduce tooth decay over poor hygiene with fluoridated water.
There were/are many factors that contributed to the decline in tooth decay, I think the overwhelming primary factor was dramatically improved oral hygiene; fluoride in the toothpaste a distant second and fluoride in the water a not even amounting to a wart on the dog’s butt. It’s not that it does any good when taken internally; it’s that it does no harm.
If it does no good and is not naturally occurring, why put it in? Do we really know that it causes no harm over the long haul? Have there been any double blind studies to prove that point? Why is it that we seem to have an increase in auto-immune disorders, cancer (which could be linked to an auto immune failure/disorder), heart disease, obesity, and a whole host of other issues since fluoridation of the water?

A bill being proposed by California ‘DREAM Act’ proponent/Assemblyman Gil Cedillo (D-Los Angeles) provides a perfect lesson in liberal thinking. Cedillo has proposed legislation that “would change police procedures at drunken-driving checkpoints, prohibiting officers from arresting drivers and immediately impounding their cars if their only offense is not having a license.”
Those in favor of the assemblyman’s bill believe AB353 will keep drivers from being trapped at DUI checkpoints. Supporters also believe that — now, this is key — “otherwise law-abiding illegal immigrants” shouldn’t be penalized for breaking the law by entering the country illegally, or by driving illegally when they get here.

As a chemist with 30 years of background in environmental chemistry I can state with authority that what Wagonburner says in #6 is scientifically sound. The “crap in the water” is dissolved solids that fall out during the freezing process consisting mostly of calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium salts. They are left in there on purpose because they provide a layer of calcium carbonate scale in steel pipes that inhibit corrosion. If all the dissolved solids were removed from your water at the treatment plant your house (and most of the delivery lines to your house) would look like a big fountain.

#13 SD: With that outright lie, the skank DWS, has effectively destroyed the last shred of credibility she may retained. A district where Ds outnumber Rs by 3 to 1 and has NEVER been held by a R since it was established in 1923 or so, could not be called difficult in any sense of the word. If the skank DWS, told me that at 9:30am in Houston Texas on 14Sept2011, the sun was up, I would be compelled to go and check as her word is so unreliable/frequently lacking in truth.

I have no problem with the mineral salts and junk in the water in the lines, it just doesn’t make as good a cup o coffee as one made with RO water. I have no problem with chlorine in the water up to my house, I just don’t wanna drink it because it is poisonous. If I take it out at my RO system, right before it goes in my glass or ice cube tray or coffee pot, no harm, no foul; and the water keeps from getting contaminated with pathogens.
The point I was trying to raise is why do we want to have fluoride in the water, and take it internally, when it is darn near impossible to buy toothpaste without fluoride and it will accomplish the objective?
Is there any benefit what-so-ever to fluoride in the water over good dental hygiene practices with fluoridated toothpaste? I don’t think so.
We can’t discount the genetic variability in an individual’s resistance to tooth decay either. -

Why is it that we seem to have an increase in auto-immune disorders, cancer (which could be linked to an auto immune failure/disorder), heart disease, obesity, and a whole host of other issues since fluoridation of the water?
Most, if not all, of the diseases you mention are coincidental to fluoridation, not caused by it. Around the time fluoride began to be introduced, the American lifestyle began to grow much more sedentary as the US rapidly increased its prosperity. This prosperity increased the effects of the sedentary lifestyle because we began eating lots more “manufactured” foods and less of the foods typically found in homes earlier.
Coincidence does not imply causation.

I, too, grew up drinking well and cistern water as well as drinking raw deer lease water all my life. I got 2 bonuses from it.
1 At age 70, I still have all of my teeth, and:
2 I can drink (and have) water anywhere in the world without getting the drizzles. -

Back in the nineties, following the repair of an 8″‘water main that Farmed Brown drilled through with his post-hole digger, we pressured the system back up but did not have any water downstream from the repair point. After hours of searching and using the process of elimination, we dug up the main line at a fire hydrant location ( a natural restriction point). We pulled out of the main a perfectly football-shaped rock of calcium carbonate. When Farmer Brown drilled through the line, the resulting water hammer dislodged the football and it traveled down to the fire hydrant location. It took 20 years for that football to build up over time, somewhere back up the line. I recall we finished up about 4 o’clock the next morning.

On the other hand, we really don’t need a repeat of the last year or so of the Woodrow Wilson Presidency. Maybe we’d best send in Monica Lewinsky for some take-out.
Is it possible to have a quadruple entendre?

I have no problem with chlorine in the water up to my house, I just don’t wanna drink it because it is poisonous.
You do realize that table salt contains oodles of chlorine, right? And that when a salt dissolves, its components dissociate? That means that in the case of simple salt water, there’s lots of chlorine and sodium ions floating around in the water. Seawater chloride ion concentration is about 19,000 ppm. Lots more than 0.02 ppm.

More Federal Insanity. No, this is not a Monty Python send-up. This is REAL bureaucracy at work. Code V91.07XA: “Burn due to water-skis on fire.”
Walked Into a Lamppost? Hurt While Crocheting? Help Is on the Way New Medical-Billing System Provides Precision; Nine Codes for Macaw Mishaps
By ANNA WILDE MATHEWSToday, hospitals and doctors use a system of about 18,000 codes to describe medical services in bills they send to insurers. Apparently, that doesn’t allow for quite enough nuance.
A Code for What Ails You.Search for diagnoses codes from the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, by typing in a keyword. We’ve provided a few to get you started.
[CODES09111]And see the full table of codes at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services site. Click 2011 Code Descriptions — Long Format, Table Format and README files.
A new federally mandated version will expand the number to around 140,000—adding codes that describe precisely what bone was broken, or which artery is receiving a stent.
It will also have a code for recording that a patient’s injury occurred in a chicken coop.
Indeed, health plans may never again wonder where a patient got hurt. There are codes for injuries in opera houses, art galleries, squash courts and nine locations in and around a mobile home, from the bathroom to the bedroom.
SNIP…….
Some codes could seem downright insulting: R46.1 is “bizarre personal appearance” while R46.0 is “very low level of personal hygiene.”
It’s not clear how many klutzes want to notify their insurers that a doctor visit was a W22.02XA, “walked into lamppost, initial encounter” (or, for that matter, a W22.02XD, “walked into lamppost, subsequent encounter”).
SNIP……..
With the move to ICD-10, the one code for suturing an artery will become 195 codes, designating every single artery, among other variables, according to Optum Insight, a unit of United Health Group Inc. A single code for a badly healed fracture could now translate to 2,595 different codes, the firm calculates. Each signals information including what bone was broken, as well as which side of the body it was on.

Pyro: I am not trying to make an iron clad causation issue with the fluoride- health thing. Why put it in when it may be a factor or a catalyst to spur along other things that may or may not happen? If it does not need to be there for tooth health (and as I have tried to demonstrate above, it does not) why put it in at all?

#27 Pyro: Is the ionic state of the chlorine in the water the same as that in the sea water or water that has salt dissolved in it? If yes, why is it that I can smell the free chlorine in the tap water but not in the RO water with salt dissolved in it? In the case of seawater and RO water with salt dissolved in it, the chlorine ions are balanced with the sodium ions. In the case of chlorinated water (or swimming pools) the chlorine is not balanced with sodium and is in a more or less free state in solution, that is what gives it its effectiveness in killing pathogens, because it is wissin poisonous in that state.

Let’s all be honest here. It’s time to fully come clean on this scandal — that’s right — the gig is up — time to acknowledge the fact that you’re living double life. I’m not here to judge you (hey, we’re all in the same boat) — rather just to point out what everyone is bound to figure out anyway. If your significant other is clueless about it, don’t worry — I won’t say anything — filling him or her in on the details is up to you.
There’s no need to feel ashamed or embarrassed about this — on the contrary, you should be thoroughly outraged! You start your work day early. You work extremely hard to provide for yourself and your family. It may require a 2nd job, or maybe your spouse has to work full-time as well in order to make ends meet. What ever it takes, right? You pay your bills, you pay your taxes — you pay your taxes.

Wall Street fell three percent after President Obama’s Thursday speech and fell two hundred points after Monday’s speech. This presents a major problem.
Fox News could be charged with insider trading just for revealing the time and date of OBH’s next speech.

It would be too time consuming to explain here, especially because I couldn’t post the pertinent tables, but strong chlorine odor in your water indicates the free chlorine levels are too low.
Even when I have the tables, no one wants to believe it. I have been fighting this battle for almost a decade. I don’t even make the attempt when the customer reveals, “I’m a certified engineer, buddy, and I know what I’m talking about.” -

#44 Shannon: When you smell the chlorine in the water it is actually the chloromines correct? Either way, having the stuff in the water is fine up to the point of consumption, at that point it makes sense to take it out if possible and activated charcoal makes it real easy.

Shannon, being of the Electrical Engineering genre, I’m not qualified to make a statement, but wouldn’t that be similar to S02 not having an odor at elevated levels?

I remember our well water growing up. As I remember, that water was hard enough to hammer nails. AND we had visible sand grains floating in it. It was common to get a glass of water and let it sit for a while, or we could feel the grit as we drank it down.
Keeping the tub looking clean was certainly a chore.

At this point the subject gets complicated and guess what, I have to go investigate a reported water leak.
The amount of chlorine required to disinfect water is called chlorine demand. If your source has a high chlorine demand, it ultimately becomes cheaper to use chloramines (chlorine w/ ammonia) as opposed to free chlorine only. Chloramines also produce less (harmful) byproducts such as trihalomethanes.
Chloramines are applied more and more often in the United States as an alternative for chlorine during secundary disinfection of drinking water. in the year 2002, 20% of the US drinking water production companies used chloramines. The main reason for the transfer from chlorine to chloramines is that chloramines react with organic matter less often than chlorine.
Little to no trihalomethanes (THM) and other disinfection byproducts are formed during chlormaine disinfection.
Chloramines will remain actively within the plumbing much longer. This is because it takes long for chloramines to be broken down.
Chloramines do not give off any taste or smell and are relatively safe.http://www.lenntech.com/processes/disinfection/chemical/disinfectants-chloramines.htm

One other thing, the “drinking water” you see in the grocery stores has been thoroughly deionized and purified. They then add back a certain recipe of minerals to give it a taste. Distilled water contains only water – no minerals, no nothing else.

In citing Canada’s abortion laws, an Edmonton appeal court ruled that an Alberta woman who strangled her son with her underwear after secretly giving birth in 2005, will face no guaranteed jail time.
Katrina Effert was sentenced Friday for killing her newborn and then throwing the body over a fence into the neighbor’s yard on April 13, 2005, when she was 19. She was given a three-year suspended sentence by Judge Joanne Veit wherein if she abides by the court’s conditions for the next three years, she will not spend time behind bars. CBC notes the justification given by the judge for such an astounding sentence:

You do realize that table salt contains oodles of chlorine, right? And that when a salt dissolves, its components dissociate? That means that in the case of simple salt water, there’s lots of chlorine and sodium ions floating around in the water. Seawater chloride ion concentration is about 19,000 ppm. Lots more than 0.02 ppm.
Now you’re going off the, um, reservation. Chlorine in water is dissolved Cl2 gas. It does not become chloride ion. Table salt and salt water contain chloride ions, not chlorine. The chemical properties of the two are vastly different. You can swim in 19,000 ppm solution of chloride. Try that with a 19,000 ppm solution of chlorine and you’ll no longer have any skin.

The nation’s second-largest Indian tribe said on Tuesday that it would not be dictated to by the U.S. government over its move to banish 2,800 African Americans from its citizenship rolls.
“The Cherokee Nation will not be governed by the BIA,” Joe Crittenden, the tribe’s acting principal chief, said in a statement responding to the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Relative to surface water, groundwater has very limited amounts of organics. City of Houston uses lots of surface (Trinity River) water. City of Brenham’s source is Lake Somerville. These guys have to worry about organics, turbidity problems and numerous other challenges. Treating surface water is whole different world from mine.
How Houston produces the fine water they do is simply amazing.

Dude in Mississississississippi who was abducted by aliens assumes flying saucer temperature.
Hickson, then 42, was fishing with 19-year-old Calvin Parker Jr. on a pier near Pascagoula, Mississippi in October 1973 when they said a cigar-shaped UFO with flashing blue lights suddenly appeared above them.
A door opened up, the two men later told authorities, and they were pulled into the craft by aliens, who paralyzed them, examined them on a table and then let them go.
But poor, poor Buford wasn’t so lucky. After his colonoscopy, they ate him.

#3 Hamous. Now that is a great find containing a most sensible argument. The last thing Michele Bachmann needs is entanglement with this fringe thinking by association, which has already done damage to her image. At least it has with me. I was embarrassed for her strident rejoinder to Rick Perry on the Gardasil matter at the debate; it seemed to me to be the cart of emotion ahead of the horse of good thinking. His objection to her comments/accusations was delivered about as courteously as I can imagine a Southern gentleman could muster.
I supported her campaign financially. Can’t do it any more. The role model should be The Baroness, Lady Margaret Thatcher.
The topics all the Pubbie candidates must focus on are the rape of our economy, Obamacare’s utter and complete defeat, the horrendous unemployment rate, our national security’s declline, the illegitimate Obama czars and the deviltry they invoke, energy independence with our own sources, to name some big ones. A snit fit over the Gardasil incident, for which Perry is doing penance all out of proportion to the assumed sin, shows a distressing lack of focus. The same goes for the rest of the gang nitpicking on one another’s failings that does not advance the vital mission of taking our Republic back. The schoolyard behavior should be so far in their past that it is barely remembered.
Dismount soapbox.

What they all need to do when asked a question on a particular topic is state what their plan is/would be to address that particular topic, not start going off on what an evil heathen the other guy is for whatever sin, real or imagined, he may have committed.
Comparing and contrasting is legitimate discourse, but it should be directed at the plan/idea, not at the person.

Supporters like you are the reason I’m here, and the values we share have always made our organization more than just a political campaign.
So whenever I can, I want to take the opportunity to meet you. Last month, that meant I got to talk to folks in Iowa about small-business opportunities, and sit down with a group of volunteers from around the country who helped build this campaign in their communities this summer.
Today, I want to ask if you’ll join me and three other supporters for a meal and conversation sometime soon.
Please donate $5 or more to be automatically entered for a chance to join me for dinner.
If this sounds a bit familiar to you, it’s because we’ve done this before. In fact, my hope is that I’ll be able to keep doing these dinners throughout the campaign.
They’re a chance for me to talk one on one with people like you who are taking ownership of this campaign and connect with the work going on every day in neighborhoods across the country.
These dinners also set our campaign apart. No matter what our opponents do over the next 14 months, dinners like these are how we will continue to put people at the heart of this campaign — and prove that we don’t need checks from Washington lobbyists or special-interest PAC money to win an election. We can do it person to person, in our neighborhoods and backyards, and over the dinner table.
That’s why I’m asking for your donation today. I hope you’ll take a minute to help build this campaign. When you do, you’ll have a chance to join me for dinner:

Maybe I’ll get to thank you in person.

Well, I went to the church to make copies of my handouts for tonight’s class. This is the second class of the year. I had my three bouncers in the room with all 16 of my students last week, and we were at odds with what to do with ourselves. We’re not used to such a small group.
I checked with my DRE this afternoon, and we should be more comfortable this evening. My class load is up to 42, with two more weeks of registration.
Fresh meat…heh heh heh… /rubbing hands
Tonight’s class will be:
For this week’s new attendees – they have to catch up on last week’s rules and regs, get their mug shot taken, and then they get to join —
Last weeks’ attendees – our study of personality types, and how certain Biblical characters fit certain types. I wanna make these characters real to my students, and not just names on a page.Besides, I can’t get into the real hard stuff until next week, when I hopefully will have most of my class firmly ensconced in their chairs and on my roster.

“They yelled at me ‘Is anyone else in the house,’” Clemens recalled. “I did say ‘yes, my wife is a CBS News correspondent. She’s upstairs nursing our infant baby.’ That seemed to de-escalate things a little bit.”

Can the butterfly nets and that funny jacket be very far behind?#97 Robert M,
FLOTUS is doing a superb job of downgrading herself. We all need to just stand back and get out of the way. 🙂 -

You can’t fool me any more with these cheap political tricks. Every time POTUS approval numbers start to tank, someone trots out one of these pictures of FLOTUS to try to make us feel sorry for him. Well I’m here to tell you that he made his own bed, so he has to sleep in it – I’m through feeling sorry for him because he made a few bad choices in life. Just think, once the pressure of being President is over, he will still have to deal with this. Sometimes it seems that life just isn’t fair.
