The Years of Shame

Is it just me, or are the 9/11 commemorations oddly subdued?
Actually, I don’t think it’s me, and it’s not really that odd.
What happened after 9/11 — and I think even people on the right know this, whether they admit it or not — was deeply shameful. Te atrocity should have been a unifying event, but instead it became a wedge issue. Fake heroes like Bernie Kerik, Rudy Giuliani, and, yes, George W. Bush raced to cash in on the horror. And then the attack was used to justify an unrelated war the neocons wanted to fight, for all the wrong reasons.
A lot of other people behaved badly. How many of our professional pundits — people who should have understood very well what was happening — took the easy way out, turning a blind eye to the corruption and lending their support to the hijacking of the atrocity?
The memory of 9/11 has been irrevocably poisoned; it has become an occasion for shame. And in its heart, the nation knows it.
I’m not going to allow comments on this post, for obvious reasons.

    Krugman is a prime example of the effete bed-wetters who think that 9-11 is our fault because we did something to offend the nutter community within Islam.

    I lived in Turkey for two years in the early 1970’s. We lived about three blocks from the Officer’s club (it and lots of other US/NATO military offices & functions were located in town). It was bombed two or three times while we lived there. Other facilities were as well. We got out of school (which was on base) several times because of “civil unrest”, meaning the local Muslim nuts were causing trouble and a 30 or 40 American kids in a blue Air Force bus was considered too juicy of a target.

    This was thirty years before 9-1 and Muslim nuts were running around causing trouble because it was and still is the only way they can get attention, since their ideas don’t attract anyone else because of their merit.

    Where’s that mental health warrant for Krugman? Get the fellows with the butterfly nets and the funny jacket. The NYT does not cover itself in glory by running his opinion pieces. It covers itself in something quite the opposite. Same goes for every paper that runs his stuff.

    If Krugman is trying to get attention to show that he is an idiot, then he has succeeded!!! When somebody like this moron makes outlandish statements like those, then he is playing the “stupid” card for what it is worth. Why didn’t Klugman blame GWB for the 9/11, they blame him for everything else?

    If Krugman is trying to get attention to show that he is an idiot, then he has succeeded!!! When somebody like this moron makes outlandish statements like those, then he is playing the “stupid” card for what it is worth. Why didn’t Klugman blame GWB for the 9/11, they blame him for everything else?

    By Krug’s logic, the Mayor and the President and all of their first responders should have cowed down in bunkers and waited for the dust to settle. Then they could come out, count the bodies, denounce the acts of violence, promise to get to the bottom of it, make the necessary changes to prevent future events of this type, and then get back to the business of being politicians.

    By his logic (and that of our fearless leader), since it’s all our fault to begin with, our only response should be a thorough self inventory (aka navel gazing) followed by loud vocal apologies and never ending promises to change our evil ways – even an invitation to slap us again is we don’t get it right soon enough.

    These people should be institutionalized, but unfortunately, the people running the institutions often seem to think the same way.

    Unrelated war my butt. Huessein was neck deep in promoting jihadists. Krugman today is free to write about his disdain for George Bush and the “neocons” in huge part becuase of the efforts that people like George Bush made post 9/11.
