It’s hump day.
Buffalo hump – not what I thought. Warning – picture may cause discomfort.
But you CAN avoid the dowager’s hump! Warning: advertising
Then you have humpback whales.

Everything you wanted to know about road humps. I find it amusing that they are called “traffic calming devices”. That isn’t my experience.
Do camel’s humps really hold water? In Vermont, you can walk on one!
I avoided all the R and XXX listing that came up. If you want other versions of “hump,” you’ll just have to look for them yourselves.

Dowagers hump is a self inflicted malady caused by poor posture, overly tight muscles on the front of the body and weak muscles on the back. If caught before it gets too bad, most of it can be reversed through work and therapy.

It’s not a hairball issue, unfortunately. She has a benign growth in her abdomen. We thought she’d be dead by now, but she’s still playful and pathetically affectionately needy, plaintively meowing at squirrels, suddenly rushing off across the room, and making occasional ninja attacks on my ankles when she’s hungry. In other words, she’s not in pain and she’s every inch your typical feline. I have a feeling that she’ll live out a normal lifespan.

The only thing we’ve found that helps is to feed her patรฉ type wet cat food. Dry food is barfed up every time, almost immediately.

    Insanity on parade.

Under AB 889, household โ€œemployersโ€ (aka โ€œparentsโ€) who hire a babysitter on a Friday night will be legally obligated to pay at least minimum wage to any sitter over the age of 18 (unless it is a family member), provide a substitute caregiver every two hours to cover rest and meal breaks, in addition to workers’ compensation coverage, overtime pay, and a meticulously calculated timecard/paycheck.

Of course the Clown that thought this up has NEVER ran a lemonade stand let alone made a payroll.

The private sector created 91,000 jobs from July to August, a shade below expectations, according to a report from ADP that sets the stage for a likely weak report on nonfarm jobs the government will release Friday.

#20 Katfish: From the last part of the article:

Despite the apparent precedent for alcoholism-related lawsuits, EEOCโ€™s case might not be a slam dunk. As the Competitive Enterprise Instituteโ€™s Hans Bader notes, a federal appellate court ruled in 1995 that employers can fire someone for problems caused by an ADA-qualified disability if that disability โ€œposes a significant risk [to others] that cannot be eliminated by reasonable accommodation.โ€
The U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals established that standard when it ruled against an HIV-positive individual who sued the University of Maryland Medical System Corporation for firing him from its residency program for fear that he might inadvertently infect hospital patients with the virus.

I don’t see how “reasonable accommodation” could be achieved by allowing the drunk back in the truck. Mayhaps saner minds will prevail.
Old Dominion should sue the EEOC for its costs in having to contest this ridiculous lawsuit. Sue the VSR at the EEOC who originally filed the complaint and its boss and the director, PERSONALLY, so that this kind of crapola will cease.

I just saw this story about Muslims going berserk after the women were prohibited from riding certain rides for safety reasons. I can understand why the park wouldn’t want to be liable for them being killed when their scarves got caught in the machinery.

Part of my Mommy/Daughter day involved walking along the beach and taking pictures with Lovely. I saw a Muslim family there, the mother in full garb sitting on the sand, and a young almost pubescent girl with her father, playing in the water while wearing blue jeans and a long sleeved shirt. I can only imagine the chafing the young girl was going to deal with. The father and her brother were, of course, in comfortable swim wear.

I told Lovely it must suck to be a Muslim woman at the beach.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney says the timing of the speech is not aimed at overshadowing the next Republican debate, which is cosponsored by NBC News and Politico, and is scheduled to air at the same time as the planned presidential address.

“It is coincidental,” Carney said. “It is one debate of many [that will air] on one channel of many… [and] there are many other factors here” to consider when scheduling a major address from the president, he added.

How can this be anything other than “wire testing”? Just coincidental that he chooses to schedule his BS Campaign speech at the same time the R debate is scheduled ??? The debate was scheduled quite a while ago and I am quite sure that O’Erkle and his staff knew that, what possible explanation could be given other than that of a childish Pizzing contest?

Unfortunately, the administration doesnโ€™t have the best researchers in the world. As it turns out, Solyndra never made a profit, either before or after soaking up $535 million in loan guarantees. The money went to build a massive new facility, but eventually canceled an expansion and started laying off workers. Now, with Solyndra moving into Chapter 11, it looks like all that money is lost for good โ€” and instead of saving or creating jobs, a thousand or more workers will have to start looking for a new job soon.

We have this story about the MLK statue

Poet and author Maya Angelou says a recently unveiled monument to civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. is inscribed with a quote taken out of context that makes the preacher seem “arrogant.”
I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness, the inscription on the 30-foot-tall statue of King reads.
    /snip
The quote was taken from a sermon King gave shortly before his death, where he imagined what his own eulogy would sound like.
“If you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice,” King said. “Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter.”
Angelou, who read a poem at Bill Clinton’s first inauguration, told Weingarten that taking out the “if clause” at the beginning of the quote makes King sound conceited, as if he were praising himself for no reason.

I can’t believe that I am about to type this but I agree with Mayo Angelou, the quote is really screwed up.

Anyone who purchased gold three years ago because they pulled out of the stock and bond markets and invested $10,000 in that precious metal would have today $12,750.

If the same person had bought $10,000 shares of Ruger firearms, they would have $19,000.

Texpat I think you may be mistaken. Gold was around $800 3 years ago and it is around $1800 now. That $10,000 investment would be worth over $20K now.

Okay, I misunderstood the original post I read which was unclear.

Here is one with more clarity.

What’s been a better trade than gold over the last five years? Guns. But not just any guns: guns made by Sturm Ruger & Co.

The stock has been on a tear, up about 80% in the last year, while the S&P 500 is up only 4%. Even the mighty SPDR Gold ETF is up about 40% in comparison.
If you thought the global debt-fear trade was a boon for gold, the yellow metal’s got nothing on firearms. Sturm Ruger more than quadrupled over the past five years, while GLD is up “only” 157%, and the S&P is down 9% in that period.

In some ways, you could think of RGR as a levered proxy for playing the rise of gold. Sturm Ruger got killed in the 2008 collapse of the financial system. When GLD was liquidated for cash, so was Sturm Ruger. Its stock dropped from $20 in the fall of 2007 to a low of $5.18 in November 2008.

At a time of hyper-concern for economic collapse, some thought gun sales would propel the stock higher, but it got milked for cash just like any other stock. Since then, the stock has risen quickly and steadily to its current price above $26.

On Monday, while the U.S. debt downgrade roiled the markets and sent indices down more than 2%, Sturm Ruger’s stock was up.

It’s actually a better return on Ruger than I thought.

    RE: my # 56

If you had invested $10,000 in Ruger stock at $5.18 in the fall of 2008, you would now have at least $50,000.

If gold has risen 157% over the same period, with the same investment you would have $25,700, if my math is correct.

FWIW; I bought Ruger in the spring of 2008,..I think, for about $8.00 and now it’s in the $35.00 range! Oh and I bought 1000 shares of Ford @ 5.97 after they were the only ones left standing and it went to $18.00+, last I checked it was around $12.00. Nope, picking stocks is NOT Rocket Science, just common sense. Oh, I forgot about Sirius XM, more than doubled my money on that one. Dittos, “Sara Lee”, at least doubled in a couple of years. ๐Ÿ˜‰

There are only two really good pistols in the world today. John Browning’s design of 1911 and the Ruger MkIII

Everything else is just a copy of something else.

One might want to put the Browning Hi-Power in there, but I’d only do it if it were chambered in .45 ACP

Good evening Hamsters. Another hotter-than-it-had-to-be day is almost over. Rain is or isn’t in the forecast, depending on the whims of the tropical low/distrubance/whatever. We leave the torrid month of August to the record books with great hope that September doesn’t catch the heat as well.

Went to Pete Olson’s town hall meeting tonight in Richmond at the just-opened Fort Bend County Justice Center that contains the new courthouse, sheriff’s office, and jail in one complex.

No Move-On thugs showed up at this town hall, but one outspoken and cranky fellow who wouldn’t hush was escorted out the doors. Had the thugs appeared they would be dumb as a sack of hammers for raising a disturbance with the sheriff’s department and jail right next door, and Sheriff Milton Wright present along with several deputies. So this time Congressman Olson got a chance to speak and take questions. The audience was polite, attentive, and mostly supportive. ๐Ÿ™‚

The Hi-Power does represent the apogee of John Browning’s genius. I just wish he had done it in a man sized caliber. I’ve never understood why it is not more popular than it is, especially given the modern love affair with 9mm pistols.
