Weekend Workplace Hijinx Open Comments

The world needs more people like David Thorne in the workplace.

Apparently after receiving three, you are meant to have some kind of formal meeting between the parties involved but this never happened. According to the rules, if there are five complaints, an external mediator has to be bought in. This didn’t happen either and I was quite disappointed.

Poor Simon also found out how creative Mr. Thorne can be with Justin Bieber.

While I admire Mr. Thorne’s creativity in his practical jokes the frequency of said acts is high enough in a short time, Feb through August, that is would become pretty darn annoying.

Anyone here remember the tv show Max Headroom? If so, here’s a refresher. If not, a peek into the late 80’s.

When I happened to think of the show, I thought I’d enjoy some clips from it, but it doesn’t seem to hold up well.

I really like “Missing Missy” but yeah, he would get annoying.

So this morning I was laying in bed half asleep listening to the radio and the person giving a summary of the day’s news sez:

Hurricane Irene has been downgraded to a category 1 storm, but it is no less dangerous.

Uh, yeah, it is less dangerous. That’s why they use a scale, you know, to classify its dangerousness.

LQQking @ the Radar, the eye of the storm is just north of Beaufort, NC, coming over land will take some wind outta’ her sails, so it’ll prolly skirt up the coast as a Tropical Storm. Oh this would be about 10:30 eastern Time.

I’m watching the cooking shows, and it still amazes me:

“Just a little bit of butter” – as he throws in two huge chunks of butter.
“Just a touch of olive oil” – as he thoroughly coats the fish filets
“Just a tad bit of salt” – and throws at least a handful of salt into the pot

I guess my idea of “little bit,” “touch,” and “tad” need revision. I guess cooking schools use different size measuring cups or something.

Then I got to thinking (always a dangerous thing) and wondering who is the bigger prankster – David Thorne for messing with some wimp person’s business cards; or the weather media for hyping a hurricane disaster of biblical proportions for something that doesn’t even qualify as a hurricane. Now this is truly Hurricane Shelia Jackson Lee – full of wind and not qualified to do anything.

Where’s my FEMA card? We should all be entitled to a $2000 FEMA debit card just for being subjected to all the hype for the past week or so. Think about it – if Obama were to pass out a bunch of FEMA cards then maybe everyone would believe that the situation is more serious that it actually is. Maybe I’ll e-mail that suggestion to the DNC in case they haven’t already thought about it – they’ll probably have to do a study first and not pass out the cards until just before election time next year though.

. . . .AHEM, SARGE can you hear me? The VSRs climbed over the fence and this was prolly not their first time over that fence. The victim,(car lot owner), had been burgled several times previously in very recent past. The theft(s) represent food off of his table. The VSRs were treated far more gently than what they deserved by the victim. Donโ€™t forget that the VSRs were where they knew they should not be and were armed. The civil jury should have done exactly the same thing as the criminal grand jury and found for the victim.

Ummm–no I can’t hear you. I’m reading this on the internet.

When you break into/onto someoneโ€™s property with the obvious intent to steal, you take your life in your own hands. IF more property owners would follow suit, the VSRs would, perhaps, think of a better way to support their drug habit or wissin quit and be a productive citizen. I kind of look at as โ€œsuicide by wissed off property ownerโ€.

If you can kill someone over a material item, I truly feel sorry for you. I personally feel there is nothing material on the planet that is worth the cost of a human life. Taking a life is a serious thing, and something that can’t be undone. I personally believe that killing a thief, merely because he is a thief, means that we have made it impossible for that person to repent his sin and turn his life and soul to Christ for redemption and rebirth.

Deadly force should only be applied when your life, or the lives of others are in danger. Morally, we are obligated to save lives, even if it means taking another life to prevent that from happening.

As to jumping over the fence:

Corbin testified he saw two armed men charge out of a building and run in their direction, one of them shouting โ€œweโ€™re gonna get youโ€ in an obscenity-laced threat. Corbin, who escaped by climbing over a car and jumping a fence, said he felt a bullet pass by him as someone fired four gunshots.

Fox was standing inside a small shed when a .45-caliber rifle bullet passed through the shedโ€™s door and pierced his heart.

The property owner was shooting at a man outside the fence, endangering lives of innocent people. He shot wildly and irresponsibly and thus displayed a willful disregard for any human life, not just those of the perpetrators. Shooting through a door only underlines that fact.

Furthermore, they attempted to conceal evidence:

Milanovic and his father told police a week before the shooting they would shoot any intruders who returned. Police say the men concealed the rifle in the trunk of a car so well that a police detective initially missed it during a search.

.45 cal. rifle bullet? What was the guy using, a Trapdoor Springfield? If that was a modern smokeless round (Long Colt Carbine donโ€™t count), he is lucky a neighbor or two, or nearby livestock, were not winged.

The story mentions a Heckler and Koch was used. The only product H & K makes that6 is both 45 and can be described as a “rifle” is actually a semi-auto sub-machine gun.

It is an irresponsible choice for a personal self defense weapon. It is inaccurate in high stress situations when used by people unfamiliar with the weapon (the owner had borrowed it). It has higher penetration than is desirable in populated areas, as evidenced by its lethality when shot through a closed door. It should only be used in close quarters, and this guy was firing it away through doors and over fences in a junk yard.

I’m beginning to think that the prosecutor should have indicted him for reckless disregard and depraved indifference to the danger he placed his neighbors and passers by in when he sprayed the yard with gunfire.

The above seems a little overblown/overheated. W/o going back to reread the details, I think this burglary attempt happened in the dead of night in a junkyard. It was not in a residential area with a school in session next door.

Sometimes the benefits to society of the things we do are worth the penalty we have to pay. Removing a skunk from a shed without waiting for the animal control folks might be the thing to do under the circumstances. Doing the right thing may not always be the legal thing – but we then have to place our trust in our fellows to sort out the wheat from the chaff and administer justice in an appropriate manner.

There is a legal and moral standard we, as a society, impose to insure the safety of innocents. A .45 caliber slug fired from a carbine length barrel is lethal for over a mile. One assumes that even in the dead of night there are cars on roadways and houses with sleeping people in them within that range if fired from any inhabited location. The same standard of safety that applies at a shooting range should also apply at junkyards, and rifle ranges are generally located in much less populated areas.

Good morning Hamsters. Well it was a bordering on unpleasant 77 this morning at 6 with some ground mist, and it looked to becoming miserable when about 10 the wind picked up out of the NE briefly and on to the NW and finally settled on SW. At first it was coolish because it was dry, but as the humidity tanked (28%) the air got steadily hotter, and it is not pleasant now. The weather folks said this would happen thanks to Irene’s moving northward up the Atlantic coast and dragging dry air in the middle of the country down our way. It will be blistering here today.

Last I heard yesterday from a real meterologist, not someone who plays one on TV, on Sean Hannity’s radio program is the concern that Irene is behaving like Ike did. A worrisome part is the storm surge, and few of the weather folks are saying much about that–or at least were yesterday. Also a major concern is the effect of its winds accelerating among the canyons of tall buildings as happened in downtown Houston when Ike shattered windows. We thought that problem was fixed after Alicia’s winds tore gravel off rooftops and hurled it into windows, and the gravel was replaced with solid surfacing. Not so as we learned when Ike came along. Will be interesting to see what happens with Irene in cities with tall buildings.

Have missed the hysteria thus far by not turning on the radio or TV yet. ๐Ÿ™‚

I personally believe that killing a thief, merely because he is a thief, means that we have made it impossible for that person to repent his sin and turn his life and soul to Christ for redemption and rebirth.

i understand that the ancient Israelites did it.

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker visited Messmer Preparatory Catholic School yesterday, while the school repaired the first vandalism that had occurred at the facility in eleven years of operation. While Walker read Dr. Seuss to the grade-school children inside, unions protested the visit and the school outside. Want to guess which group was more well-behaved? Actually, you donโ€™t have to guess. The MacIver Institute shot video of the protest and the visit and then interviewed Messmerโ€™s President, Brother Bob Smith. We see childishness, petulance, and bullying โ€” and then we see Messmerโ€™s students (via Wisconsin Reporter):

Right from the beginning you hear “Christians for Satan” from da’ youyon. These youyon folks are a bunch of buttheads; and that’s putting it politely. Also, a big LOL for the last sentence. Finally, I’ve no problem in saying that there will big big distinction between the wicked and the righteous when this event is replayed before God’s judgement seat.

I looked a little deeper into the shooting. Most people should do this kind of research before coming to a conclusion. I am even more of the impression that the property owner was not only in the wrong, but guilty of waiting in ambush with an intent to do harm.

Police withheld the report until after a grand jury convened by 4th Judicial District Attorney Dan May ruled last week there was insufficient evidence to indict Milanovic, who was never arrested.

The 145-page report paints a tense – and occasionally combative – account of police interviews after the April 19 shooting, as detectives sought to resolve inconsistencies in the men’s stories. Milanovic clung to the position that he did nothing wrong, even as he acknowledged lying about key details and admitted that he played a role in hiding the military-style carbine rifle he used to fire the fatal shot.

His father, Ljuban Milanovic, told officers that at least one of the burglars was armed and fired first during the encounter. No one corroborated that claim, and detectives found no evidence to support it.

    snip

During a police interview that morning, Milanovic repeatedly changed his story about what happened next. Colorado Springs police Detective Mareshah Hale chided him for his “lies.”

Milanovic initially insisted that he fired a single warning shot from a 9 mm pistol after hearing someone climb a fence onto his property – and that he was surprised to find Fox lying in a pool of blood on the ground. Later, he admitted that he also fired a German- made Heckler & Koch USC .45-caliber semiautomatic rifle, which police found stashed in the trunk of an Audi at the business.

Testing determined the rifle fired the fatal shot. The bullet hit Fox in the upper-left chest, exiting near his collar bone.

Testing determined the rifle fired the fatal shot. The bullet hit Fox in the upper-left chest, exiting near his collar bone.

A neighbor who heard the shots estimated that Milanovic waited 10 minutes after the shooting before using his cell phone to contact police, the report said, although Milanovic said it was no more than two or three minutes.

His story changed yet again during the civil trial.

According to his testimony, Milanovic, 32, tripped and dropped his Heckler & Koch rifle, which went off and hit Fox, who was standing in a small shed. Meanwhile, Foxโ€™s accomplice took off running, scrambled over a car and jumped a fence and got away.

A man who knows he is in the right doesn’t lie as much as this guy did.

Lying in wait is intent to commit murder, even if the victim is a criminal. The person committing the act appoints himself judge, jury, and executioner. That’s not how it works in a well run society. I can’t think of a single human being walking the face of the planet I would want to give that power to.

No. You can’t. Not even in Texas. Lying in wait is a crime. You can defend yourself, and that’s as it should be. But you cannot decide before the fact that you’re gonna kill the next sumbiotch that comes in the yard.

The legal standard is that if you know you’re going to be in danger before the fact, you have to call the authorities. The moral standard is the same.

I have a gun in my home (more than one). If someone comes in uninvited, they will find that out very quickly. But if I know somebody is coming, then the first thing i will do is call the police.

Seems to me that he was lying in wait in the event that someone broke in. He did not know someone would be breaking in.

The distinction here is that lying in wait for someone who appears on a predictable schedule (e.g., a bunch of kids showing up every Friday night after the football game) has a greater degree of premeditation. The junkyard owner had a problem with different people breaking in at different times and was guarding his property.

If the people broke in, then I wouldn’t fault him for brandishing the weapon if he called the police immediately (or especially prior to). Shooting the guy through a door (regardless of what kind of gun it was) was clearly and unequivocally wrong, unless the guy actually did shoot at him from the shed.

Now if he had merely beaten the living cr@p out of the guy, I’d sit back and applaud.

He planned on shooting somebody. he wanted to shoot somebody. He waited for the opportunity to shoot somebody, and then he shot somebody. Waiting 10 minutes to call the cops after the shooting him so he had time to hide the weapon is proof that he knew in advance that he was doing something wrong.

On the night before the shooting, he said, they stayed up and drank beer before the burglars arrived. Under questioning, Milanovic frequently voiced regret, saying that he hated guns and never wanted to hurt anybody.

But a part-time employee at Milanovic’s business told police he expressed no such qualms in private. Two days before the shooting, Stanley Naillis said Milanovic told him that he was “tired of the system” and if the burglars ever returned to the shop, he would take matters into his own hands.

“That’s not the way it works,” Naillis said he was told. “If somebody comes in, you just shoot them. You kill them.”

Neither would I, and shooting through the door is the crux of the biskit, and proof, at least to me, that his intent was not to protect himself or his property, but to exact revenge and usurp a system he thought was failing him.

Ok, watch who you have sex with; The downside of sex with Neanderthals.

There was good reason for Neanderthal and Denisovan immune system genes to have spread through the populations of modern humans who encountered them. Both Neanderthals and Denisovans had established themselves long before modern humans arrived. Their immune systems had adapted to the threats of the local environment. When those genes crossed into modern humans, they conveyed an advantage. Natural selection took care of the rest.
But the scientists think there was a downside. Inheriting Denisovan or Neanderthal immunity genes will have helped modern humans to fight the diseases of the day, but beyond the age of reproductive maturity they might have a more harmful effect, turning our immune systems on ourselves.

We had 106 today, and the pic of the weather station display to prove it. Not that I’m proud of that! I went out to get the mail, early afternoon, and my (fully legal in COH) 7-10 a.m. watering was just all boiling up out of the yard. Blazing hot and oh-so-humid right there.

Reminded me of another case years ago; Ellie Nesler, Mother Who Killed Her Son’s Accused Molester, Dies at 56.

Nesler was convicted of voluntary manslaughter, but her 10-year sentence was later overturned because of jury misconduct. She cut a deal with prosecutors to plead guilty to manslaughter and get out after serving three years because she had breast cancer.

There is NO WAY a decient human being could convict this lady! In this country you are tried by a jury of your peers and they are not only to judge the crime, but also the law. Don’t ever let a Judge tell you that you can’t judge the law. Oh, and if you want to get thrown off a jury panel real fast,…ask what “Jury Nullification” is?

Interesting article here by the Uneconomist. Written in 2002 he gives the following advice on how to improve the crappy economy we had back then:

The basic point is that the recession of 2001 wasn’t a typical postwar slump, brought on when an inflation-fighting Fed raises interest rates and easily ended by a snapback in housing and consumer spending when the Fed brings rates back down again. This was a prewar-style recession, a morning after brought on by irrational exuberance. To fight this recession the Fed needs more than a snapback; it needs soaring household spending to offset moribund business investment. And to do that, as Paul McCulley of Pimco put it, Alan Greenspan needs to create a housing bubble to replace the Nasdaq bubble.

Interestingly enough, one of the lessons at tonight’s church service included this from Paul’s letter to the Church in Rome:

Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” No, if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

I weep when I see the over blown macho rhetoric of some of these tacticool wannabes who think that crime can be solved through vigilante justice. There isn’t a stereo or a car out there that is worth a human life—-even a meth addled one.

Life taking is serious business, but you wouldn’t beleive it reading some of the blog comments I’ve seen in researching this story. I am more alarmed at what that says about the state of our society than I am at the rate of stereo thefts in used car lots. Like the poor, thieves will always be with us, and its not because we don’t kill them for thier crimes.

Even soldiers in combat have rules. Even they don’t get to decide at their whim who dies and who does not, and if they don’t follow those rules, they go to jail. Legally, we make those decisions based on the collective wisdom of the People, exercised through the Judicial and Legislative branches of government, and we decided long ago that theivery never rises to a level sufficient to take the life of the perpetrator. If we as a Society have decided that the State does not have that power, we surely should not grant it to individuals. Morally, it is wrong to take a life unless your life, or the life of another, is in danger.

This man was wrong. In countless blog postings of this story, this one, and several that cater to pressionsals and concealed carry advocates, are the only ones where I have seen anyone post the actual facts. The business owner expressed an intent to shoot someone. He obtained a weapon that was far beyond the needs of self defense. He fired that weapon irresponsibly through a fence, and into the body of a man hiding in a 6′ x 9′ wooden shed behind a closed door. He waited 10 minutes to call for help of ANY kind, let alone medical help for his victim. He hid the weapon and lied about the circumstances of the shooting. He changed his story again during the civil trial, claiming it was an accident. Nobody with a clear conscience lies that much. Nobody who knows he did the right thing does that.

A man in my house without my invitation represents a danger to me. A man in the parking lot of a used car dealership probably doesn’t. And a man hiding in a 6′ x 9′ shed with the door closed, or one who has jumped over a chain link fence and is running away certainly doesn’t.

I noticed the same thing when I read a few more stories about the killed burglar. I was surprised that virtually all of the Colorado commentary at the time of the shooting in 2009 was unsympathetic to the burglar and his parents. I thought Colorado Springs was a liberal town in a liberal state, so my preconceived notion was not upheld in the comments. Now the news about the jury award has gone national so the comments are coming from a wider audience.

A man hiding in a shed is a huge unknown, certainly doesn’t is flat out wrong. The guy running away is free to rob that place again, but now he knows the guy will shoot at him and he will likely go someplace else. Ifn the VSRs would have stopped REPEATEDLY BUGLARIZING this man’s business, they would not have been shot (at).
I have zero sympathy for VSRs stealing other peoples livelihood; ifn they get caught in the act whatever happens to them is on their own head because they were in the wrong and they knowingly placed themselves in jeopardy by their own criminal behavior.
Now if they were to escape and then they repent of their evil, wicked ways and restore that which they obtained by criminality, then the victim (the car lot owner) should forgive them because he has been “restored”. It is not the responsibility nor even in the power of the car lot owner to see into the future and discern that this particular VSR may eventually change his ways; he has a responsibility to his family to protect his livelihood.
Is it reasonable for the govt to give the death penalty for theft via the court system – no; is it reasonable for the property owner to take the life of the thief in the act of stealing his property – yes. If more thieves understood this concept there would likely be a lot less thievery taking place. Does this mean that I think that a 10 year old kid should be executed by the store owner for shoplifting a pack of twinkies – of course not; the store owner needs to apprehend the kid and call the police and the kids parents. If a big deal is made on the little stuff in the beginning, the problem usually gets handled then and the bad behavior is stopped before it escalates into the bigger stuff.
I am not excusing the potential irresponsible behavior of reckless discharge of the firearm and I am darn sure not about to give the VSR thieves a free pass because they got shot and at. I would be willing to bet that the VSR that did not get shot will prolly change his ways because he saw the bad consequences of his behavior, his friend got killed and he almost did as well. Sometimes it takes looking death in the face to get your attention. It will be very interesting to follow this current day VSR and see if he changes his ways and becomes a responsible and productive citizen.

A man hiding in a 6 x 9 shed is a known, especially if its your shed and you know there are no weapons in there and only one way out. You merely tell him to stay inside until the cops show up. That is the sensible and moral thing to do.

The guy running away is free to rob that place again, but now he knows the guy will shoot at him and he will likely go someplace else. Ifn the VSRs would have stopped REPEATEDLY BUGLARIZING this manโ€™s business, they would not have been shot (at).

But the bullets can hit anybody. And he poses no threat.

Are you an advocate of the death penalty for thieves? They’d love you in Tehran.

I have zero sympathy for VSRs stealing other peoples livelihood; ifn they get caught in the act whatever happens to them is on their own head because they were in the wrong and they knowingly placed themselves in jeopardy by their own criminal behavior.

I have no smypathy for them either. I just don;t think they should be killed, especially when they are off the property and running away or cowering in a shed.

Now if they were to escape and then they repent of their evil, wicked ways and restore that which they obtained by criminality, then the victim (the car lot owner) should forgive them because he has been โ€œrestoredโ€. Neither is it the responsib ility or in the power of the car lot owner to mete out justice at his own whim.

Is it reasonable for the govt to give the death penalty for theft via the court system โ€“ no; is it reasonable for the property owner to take the life of the thief in the act of stealing his property โ€“ yes.

So how bad does a stereo have to be before its not worth a human life any more? Or are you saying that people should die for even petty theft?

I am not excusing the potential irresponsible behavior of reckless discharge of the firearm

You most certainly are. Just a few senteces ago, you were excusing the discharge of a fkirearm in the direction of a man running away from a car lot on the grounds that he might streal again.

Sometimes it takes looking death in the face to get your attention. It will be very interesting to follow this current day VSR and see if he changes his ways and becomes a responsible and productive citizen.

I have looked death in the face, and it did get my attention.

A man hiding in a shed is a huge unknown, certainly doesnโ€™t is flat out wrong.

It is not the responsibility nor even in the power of the car lot owner to see into the future and discern that this particular VSR may eventually change his ways; he has a responsibility to his family to protect his livelihood.

Neither is it the responsib ility or in the power of the car lot owner to mete out justice at his own whim.

    As do I.

That said, we have a system of laws in this country that we all live under. Unless and until we as a society decide that petty theft and vandalism warrant the death penalty administered by a private individual without even the semblance of a trial, we must allow the legal system to do what it does.

Killing someone over a car stereo when that someone represents no threat to anyone is not even close to what I as a Christian believe is just and right in the eye of God. I am having a more and more difficult time rationalizing capital punishment for any crime whatsoever, even when our system of jurisprudence is scrupulously followed.

Remember, regardless of what a person does, he was created in the image of God. His life and soul are immeasurably precious to God. So precious, in fact, that each soul is of equal value to God, regardless of what we as imperfect humans choose to do with our lives. All human life is precious from the moment of conception to the naturally-occurring death.

Every person ever born has a kernel of the Holy Spirit dwelling within his soul. Some choose to nourish and care for that kernel; others try to bury it. Taking a life without just cause (e.g., self-defense, in a just war) is depriving that person of the opportunity to repent, in effect usurping God’s judgement. I do not presume to be able to speak for God.

Total non sequitur. It’s the middle of the night. An intruder has come over the fence and darted into the shed on your property. How could you possibly know what type of weapons the thief brought with him? Now it turns out that he only had knives on him. But you would not know that. Nor would you know exactly where he is in the shed if you fire at the structure. Lacking Xray vision, you do not know that if you fire at the door, you will hit him in the chest because that happens to be where he was standing.

So you can’t simply hide behind something substantial and watch the shed until the guy inside gives some clue that he’s an actual threat before you start shooting the place up? You don’t even know if the guy actually had a weapon before you open fire through a door.

We don’t kill theives because its wrong to kill thieves. Its wrong to kill thieves because they can be redeemed, both in the civil and spirtual sense of the word.

No car lot owner should have the pwer to decide who can or should have the chance for redemption. There is only one Arbiter of that.

The point is you DON’T know. You have to have reasonable and prudent knowledge of a fatal threat against your person or another person in order to exercise lethal force.

The owner originally claimed that he HAD been shot at. Then he claimed that he had fired only one shot from a 9mm pistol, not a mag dump from a .45 semi auto. Then he hid the weapon.

I suggest those are the acts of a man who just shot someone he knew was not a threat to him.

I’ll also point out that the reports state that the lethal wound entered his lower left chest and exited tthrough his right collar bone. Thats not a wound one gets when attacking someone. Put your a finger on your left hand on any spot in your lower left chest, and one from your right hand on your right collar bone and you’ll see what I mean.

Christian Adams wrote the following over at the Tatler:

A curious worldview is on full display in this Huffington Post piece by Paul Blumenthal โ€“ โ€œReligious Millionaire Backed Rick Perryโ€™s Career.โ€ Dr. James Leininger is a successful Christian businessman who has supported Perry financially. There was a time in this country when this piece would have never appeared. If it did, it would receive an odd reception rather than a place in a leading media forum. Imagine โ€“ โ€œChurch Goers Support Coolidge,โ€ or, โ€œSeminarian Volunteers Time for Kennedy.โ€ But apparently there is a part of America that finds the following commentary in the Blumenthal piece noteworthy:

โ€œSince the 1980s he [Leininger] has pushed a mix of religious right fervor and pro-business activism.โ€ Oh, the horror!

โ€œIn 1994, Leininger pumped tens of thousands of dollars into the candidacies of three Christian conservatives seeking seats on the State Board of Education.โ€ Yikes!

Even worse, โ€œthe board members he supported also shared Leiningerโ€™s Christian conservative values.โ€

And โ€“ โ€œLeininger has also bankrolled a number of anti-abortion groups, including Texas Right to Life, Heidi Group and the Christian Pro Life Foundation.โ€ One thing is for sure, they never tried to kill anyone.

Which brings up an important point. Apparently to Blumenthal, close association with a successful Christian is worth him spending the time to write the piece. That there might be an audience for this is doubly unfortunate. Notably, Blumenthal has never written any other guilt-by-association pieces (if such a thing was possible about Dr. Leininger) about William Ayers, Bernadine Dohrn, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, or other surprises I will be covering in my forthcoming book Injustice.

Thankfully the hardened heart world view of Paul Blumenthal is a distinct minority in this nation. The founders made no secret of the importance of virtuous influence on public officials. That Perry attracts the support of such people, to most Americans, is hardly a liability.

Good points and I like the sarcasm.

There’s times when he annoys me but Anderson Silva is an inmensly capable fighter.

Okami’s strengths made this an interesting matchup. The Japanese fighter is big for the weight class and other fighters rave about his strength in the clinch. Silva never let him get into a rhythm.

After following Silva around for the first two minutes of the first round, Okami (32-6, 10-3 UFC) worked the clinch for almost two minutes. Silva never wilted and looked plenty strong enough to deal with the ground-and-pound specialist. Once the fighters separated, the end of the first provided a preview of things to come.

Silva closed the round by landing a nasty head kick. Okami stumbled backwards and ate a knee at the close of the round. When Silva came out for the second, he meant business. He charged forward throwing from different angles. After a minute of that, he backed up and basically put his hands at his side, daring Okami to hit him. Okami took the bait. Instead of charging forward and attempting a takedown, Okami threw some sloppy punches.

Just 36 seconds into the round, Silva landed a hard jab with the right and down went Okami. Silva backed up and let Okami stand up. He repeated the pattern and less than a minute later, he put a lot more mustard on a right hook. Okami fell to his back and his arms went to the side.

It was over. Silva, the world’s No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter, jumped on top and threw 25-plus unanswered shots. Okami did nothing aside from cover up. Referee Herb Dean had to save him.

Silva’s been defeated once in six years and holds 14 straight wins.

As Hurricane Irene prepares to batter New York, federal disaster officials warn that internet outages could force people to interact with other people for the first time in years. Residents are bracing themselves for the horror of awkward silences and unwanted eye contact. FEMA advises: โ€œBe prepared. Write down possible topics to talk about in advance. Sports… the weather. Remember, a conversation is basically a series of Facebook updates strung together.

Just saw where the official temp. yesterday was 109F. That’s real temp, “not feels like”.
I heard a commotion outside and looked out the window.

It was a 40 mule team pulling a borax wagon.

Good thing Irene turned out to be a dud after all. Look who decided to take charge of the situation:
    http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2011/08/how-to-politicize-a-hurricane.php

On the other hand, why didn’t he just wave it away with his mystical powers and be done with it. That proves he wanted to make it a point for a photo op, when he could have just as easily waved it off with no concerns to the American public whatsoever. No, he wants his subjects to suffer and be forced to come to him for sustenance – that’s what hes all about from the start.

Good morning Hamsters. Pleasant 74 with a little ground mist at 6, ever so much nicer than smothering 87 a bedtime last night. Another blistering day forecast, and it’s regrettably probably right.

#113 Katfish, Ole Iowahawk forever. He makes the DoJ and Holder the laughingstock they richly deserve to be. Rep. Issa’s committee works to expose the sinister aspects of DoJ machinations and begin exacting punishment so long overdue. Sinister is Latin for left, and the DoJ these days matches the several connotations of the word.

I finally read the list of complaints against David Thorne. This is nothing but THorne being a wissin bully. I would have taken more dramatic steps much earlier in the process and stopped this crapola in the bud.
It also serves as an excellent example as to what happens when people stop standing up for themselves and defer to “the authorities”. Had the wimp Simon, after the first one or two incidents simply confronted Thorne and made it clear that the behavior would not be tolerated and that he would be in extreme pain if it continued; it would have likely stopped. Instead, he “went through channels” and nothing was ever done. Kind of like telling the cops you have been repeatedly burglarized, they tell you to file a report and nothing changes except the value of your investment. Your property continues to be destroyed or walk away and the cops do nothing.

the only thing different her is that Irene went up the coast and hit New York. It’s not even a freakin’ hurricane; it’s a really big thunderstorm. I’ve seen straight-line winds in Oklahoma that were well into tropical storm force that weren’t even associated with an actual storm of any kind.

In the late ’70s, there were straight-line winds over 80 kt in Norman. Those yankke sissies don’t have any clue what they’re talking about.

Well I guess it was a washout; After Irene: Little damage seen in many places. heh heh

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (AP) โ€” From North Carolina to New Jersey, Hurricane Irene appeared to have fallen short of the doomsday predictions. But with rivers still rising, and roads impassable because of high water and fallen trees, it could be days before the full extent of the damage is known.
More than 4.5 million homes and businesses along the East Coast lost power, and at least 11 deaths were blamed on the storm. But as day broke Sunday, surprisingly light damage was reported in many places, with little more than downed trees and power lines.
“I think it’s a little strong to say we dodged a bullet. However, it certainly could have turned out worse for the Hampton Roads area” in Virginia, said National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Montefusco.

I hope that Gibson sues the crapola out of each agent that took place in the raid, their bosses, and the head of the department. They produced the official paperwork declaring that all the wood was from sustainable harvest and the feds jack booted thugs screwed with them anyway. If we the people do not stand up for our rights and fight tooth and nail each and every time they are violated, as in this case, we will lose them to the power mad federal VSRs.

EG: When the IRS got caught repeatedly pulling this sort of jackbooted thuggery, the law was changed to allow the citizen to personally sue the agent, I think it cuts across the board. Lok at what happened to Mike Nifong and the Duke Lacrosse team fiasco. The feds must be made to pay a severe price individually and collectively when they abuse their authority as is obviously the case with Gibson. I wonder if someone who competes with Gibson, bribed a higher up at that agency in order to gain advantage?? You know how it is, follow the money and you usually get to the source of the misbehavior.

Spouse just returned from errands in Richmond and reports the car thermometer was reading between 102 and 104 on the roads coming home. Thermometer on the anemometer pole in the back yard is sliding into shade but stays at 108 as it was in full sun. Just going outside briefly to move the sprinkler to another flowerbed is a miserable chore.

The fountain was down 2 gallons this morning, and the small tank in the side pasture was down about 1/3 overnight. The mares could not have been the sole customers as they are in the barn at night and have a larger tank available in another pasture. Some crows are playing in the sprinkler in the front yard, and Mariposa is watching them from the living room windowsill. She hasn’t shown any interest in going outside. Smart kitty.

Colin “large intestine” Powell is “misrepresenting” the facts.

Powell said that when Armitage realized he was the anonymous source cited by syndicated columnist Robert Novak in an article that revealed Plame’s CIA connection, Armitage contacted Powell and they spoke to the Justice Department and the FBI for the probe ordered by Bush.
“If the White House and the operatives in the White House โ€” on Mr. Cheney’s staff and elsewhere in the White House โ€” had been as forthcoming with the FBI as Mr. Armitage was, this problem would not have reached the dimensions that it reached,” Powell said.
Instead, Powell said, the FBI continued for two more months trying to find out what had happened in the White House and that a special counsel ended up conducting a two-year probe of what he called a “mess.”

As I recall, Elliot Spitzer knew all along (or within 1 week of opening) the investigation that Richard Armitage was the leak and that Scooter Libby did not have anything to do with it; why then did he continue to “investigate” Libby when he knew the source of the non-leak??? It was a witch-hunt from the beginning to tarnish the Bush admin and any reasonable look at the situation should lead one to the same conclusion. If Powell knew, why the wiss did he not simply go on air and let it out so that the merciless persecution of Libby could have been avoided??
This is another reason I have zero respect for Large Intestine Powell.

Well, I had a great day, since it was soo hot, I decided that I would load up the 100 rounds of 44โ€™s that have been in the tumbler since the end of May. I went upstairs and started cleaning the primer pockets. My wife came up and asked me, โ€œwhy donโ€™t we go over to Bolivar and see how much of it has been rebuiltโ€?
I told her that it was awful hot and I have been wanting to do this for weeks. After a little while I thought about the fact that we donโ€™t seem to do things together as much as we used to so I said โ€œletโ€™s goโ€. We headed up 146 to I-10 and over to Wallisville, then down to Anahuac, then down to the Wildlife Refuge where we saw a few Gators and lots of waterfowl. Next we headed over to High Island and then to Gilchrist. Driving down the beach from Gilchrist to Crystal Beach we saw hundreds of Brown Pelicans feeding just off shore! Now I know where to surf fish. Iโ€™ve never seen that many in that area before, but it has been years since weโ€™ve been there. We came out and went by where our old cabin used to be, nothing but a concrete slab and a motor home. We sure had a great time there when the kids were small. Usually 2-3 couples and 5-7 kids. Next we crossed over on the Ferry, 3 boats, no waiting. I can remember waiting over 2 hours when they ran 4 boats. Some of the best times my kids ever had was riding on the Fantail and feeding Cheetos to the Sea Gulls, holding the food up between their fingers so the birds could grab it. The occasional pinch of the fingers always made for a squeal and then back for more. We stopped and ate at Joes Crab Shack and then headed home. While we were on the dock at Joes, my wife saw a Coast Guard Boat with its lights on and a Crew member manning a small machine gun on the bow. She asked me about it and I said theyโ€™re in condition 1, so they may be escorting a ship of some sort, although there were none in sight. About that time the Carnival Cruise Liner came around the corner, heading out. It was under its own power and going real slow, barely leaving a ripple in the water. YUP,โ€ฆ Life is GOOD! ๐Ÿ˜€ Insert โ€œ1000 marbles hereโ€.

Perfect Storm of Hype: Politicians, the media and the Hurricane Irene apocalypse that never was.

For the television reporter, clad in his red cagoule emblazoned with the CNN logo, it was a dramatic on-air moment, broadcasting live from Long Island, New York during a hurricane that also threatened Manhattan.
โ€œWe are in, right, nowโ€ฆthe right eye wall, no doubt about thatโ€ฆthere you see the surf,โ€ he said breathlessly. โ€œThat tells a story right there.โ€
Stumbling and apparently buffeted by ferocious gusts, he took shelter next to a building. โ€œThis is our protection from the wind,โ€ he explained. โ€œItโ€™s been truly remarkable to watch the power of the ocean here.โ€
The surf may have told a story but so too did the sight behind the reporter of people chatting and ambling along the sea front and just goofing around. There was a man in a t-shirt, a woman waving her arms and then walking backwards. Then someone on a bicycle glided past.

As those idiot liberals try to shut down the oil industry, coal and forestry in this country, they are worried about what? Shopping

“Around 85 per cent of revenue shops would have taken this weekend will โ€˜evaporateโ€™, and it is especially bad because back-to-school is the yearโ€™s second largest shopping event, he said.
One tenth of shopping ahead of school restarting would have happened this weekend, as many parents would be taking their children on holiday for Labor Day next weekend.”

Yeah. At one point, a CNN reporter was unaware he was on camera. He didn’t realize his audio was live also. He’s talking nonchalantly to the producer, thinking he was getting ready to go on. Once he knew he was live he all of the sudden began to stumble around like he was getting buffeted. What a show.

Pros & cons of Colin Powell have been argued before on LST and/or Hammy’s. There were strong feelings on both sides. This will probably fan the argument up again. Me, I abandoned all regard for Powell when he endorsed Obummer. There was no rational reason for him to do that, so I concluded it was racially motivated. And I have no use for racists.

Hello Hamsterousians! Good golly gee whiz, it’s hot. Feels like I’m stepping into a huge convection oven. Stayed out just long enough to turn on a sprinker as the birds are so parched, they just pant like a dog with their little mouths open. When the spray hits the branches of the shrub, they act like it’s their own private shower and just sit in it and fluff themselves and have a total blast!

All the critters are suffering. Saw Baby Dillo today. He was rooting around beneath my “prize” shrub and I didn’t have to energy or time to box ‘im up. So I clapped my hands to shoo him off and he just looked at me with miserable eyes and slowly went off toward the woodline. His little hipbones and shoulders were outlined in his shell, he was so skinny. Poor little thing, I don’t have the heart to chase him away any more. The dehydration might do more than all my boxing efforts.

May God have mercy on all of us, we are totally in His hands.

(retreats back into LurkCave, tear in eye and hands in prayer)

I don’t think Powell is a racist. I would describe him as a racialist. Jesse Jackson is a racist. Quanny Dix is a racist.

Thank you for kindness to birds and baby dillos! The birds that come to my yard for seeds are not skinny, but their feathers are in poor condition this year. With the COH watering restrictions, I’m no longer able to have a sprinkler going except on my 2 legal mornings, but it’s nice to see the birds enjoy it those days. We topped out at 107 today.

We’ve settled on 104 as the high temp here at our place for today since that’s the highest it got in the shade. Miserable enough. Didn’t slip below 90 until after 9, and it’s still smothering at 88.

Pete Olson hosted a BBQ get together at Safari Texas Ranch on FM 1464 in Richmond this evening to introduce the Republican US Senate candidates, and I attended along with numerous fellow Greater Fort Bend County Tea Party members among a large gathering that filled the ballroom. Candidates speaking were Tom Leppert (former Dallas mayor), Elizabeth Ames Jones (Texas RR Commissioner), Glenn Addison (businessman), Lela Pittenger (registered nurse), Ted Cruz (former Texas Solicitor General), and–gasp–latecomer who only decided to join this week, David Dewhurst. Mr. Dewhurst had been a no-show at tea party candidate forums all over the state, but I guess since Congressman Olson was hosting, he’d deign to show up.

IMHO best presentation was by Ted Cruz, whose table before the speakers began had attracted the largest gathering and whose comments received the largest applause of the evening. Mr. Leppert and Ms. Pittenger also espoused solid conservative values that definitely pleased the audience; Ms Ames Jones and Mr. Addison also did so but with fewer specifics and a bit less passion. However, Mr. Dewhurst embarrassed himself with a patchwork of platitudes, few specifics, and a clumsy and a bit condescending embrace of the Tea Party Movement as if he’s been there since 2009.

IMHO It will be a two-person primary between Ted Cruz and David Dewhurst, and if David keeps coming across in the campaign the way he did tonight, he shall self-destruct. As Rush says, when somebody is making a fool of himself, stand back and let it happen. He mentioned the Tea Party Movement in his remarks, but what galled more were several hand- painted signs on the wall behind his table that mimicked the kind seen at TP rallies, made by ordinary folks; those seemed more mocking than good props, and many of us took them as clumsy insults. His campaign would have been much better advised to have only the one printed sign on the front of his table and not had the pseudo TP rally signs behind. That he signed up so late to attend was bad enough, but to look so hastily put together compounded the impression that he didn’t have anything better to do tonight. IMHO, the train has already left the station.

Someone at church today mentioned that with Irene we may break our high pressure situation in Texas and get some rain. Let’s hope so.

Glad to hear Texpat’s OK. I remember one year in Des Plaines, IL when a huge storm was coming everyone was running to get inside while my dad went outside in rain gear. I watched him make a ditch at the side of the townhouse that would direct water straight to the center of the side and then he dug out another ditch from that center point to the middle of the side yard. It turnso ut we were about he only house in the neighborhood which did not get about two feet of water in the basement. We had damp carpets but that’s it. My brother and I had to go to other people’s homes to “play” in their flooded basement. Well, basically to see what a real flooded basement looked like.
