Friday Big Mo Update Open Comments

Now that its usefulness is declining, here’s a chart to help spell Big Mo’s name:

Big Mo seems to prefer “Gathafi”.
In other news of our favorite little colonel, rebels are announcing that they have him, one of his sons, or both of them surrounded in Tripoli.

“They are together. They are in a small hole,” one of the fighters involved in the battle, Muhammad Gomaa, told Reuters. “Today we finish. Today we will end that.”
Mahmoud Bakoush, a rebel commander at the site, told the AP that rumors that one of Kadafi’s sons might be in the buildings hadn’t been unconfirmed.

This was after an apparent near miss in another location.

Gaddafi was gone from the unassuming safe house in central Tripoli when agents arrived about 10 a.m. (4 a.m. EDT) on Wednesday after a tip-off from a credible source. But, the magazine said, they found evidence that he had spent at least one night there — though it did not say how recently that was.

He also seems to like him some blingage as well as having a bit of an infatuation with his darling “Leeza”.

Didn’t realize lefties had it so rough.

But then, they are sinister people.

I found the last paragraph to be dumbfounding:

If that is so, we should be rejoicing at the recent resurgence of left-handers in politics; you might expect Leonardo da Vinci, Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein to have been southpaws but not Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and David Cameron. But perhaps the real skill or genius in politics lies not so much in being left-handed as in being to see things from both sides, or as many sides as possible, that is being able to bridge the hemispheric and also the ideological divide.

Clinton and Obama – seeing both sides? WTW?!

Obama nominee believes judiciary can re-write Constitution, pass laws
Posted by Jack Minor • August 25, 2011

President Obama has nominated a law professor for a position on the 7th U.S. Court of Appeals. The professor believes that judges have the ability to create laws and that the Constitution “governs no one.”

Nourse was first nominated for the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals on July 14, 2010. The nomination was returned to the President in December and Obama re-nominated Nourse in
January, 2011 Nourse’s views would give the Supreme Court the ability to amend the Constitution based on their political views. “Nourse’s advocacy in favor of judicial usurpation of legislative power – even usurpation of constitutional power – is anti-constitutional. Her view makes a mockery of the Constitution and would grant as few as five judges the ability to amend the Constitution according to their own political views.”

Nourse is also an advocate of using foreign law in court decisions.

    Kinky for Perry
    Aug 24, 2011 7:45 PM EDT

Rick Perry has never lost an election; I’ve never won one. Maybe that’s what’s wrong with the world. On the other hand, I’ve long been friends with Bill Clinton and George W., and Rick Perry and I, though at times bitter adversaries, have remained friends as well.

These days, of course, I would support Charlie Sheen over Obama. Obama has done for the economy what pantyhose did for foreplay. Obama has been perpetually behind the curve. If the issue of the day is jobs and the economy, Rick Perry is certainly the nuts-and-bolts kind of guy you want in there. Even though my pal and fellow Texan Paul Begala has pointed out that no self-respecting Mexican would sneak across the border for one of Rick Perry’s low-level jobs, the stats don’t entirely lie. Compared with the rest of the country, Texas is kicking major ass in terms of jobs and the economy, and Rick should get credit for that, just as Obama should get credit for saying “No comment” to the young people of the Iranian revolution.

As a Jewish cowboy (or “Juusshh,” as we say in Texas), I know Rick Perry to be a true friend of Israel, like Bill Clinton and George W. before him.

There exists a visceral John Wayne kinship between Israelis and Texans, and Rick Perry gets it. That’s why he’s visited Israel on many more occasions than Obama, who’s been there exactly zero times as president. If I were Obama I wouldn’t go either. His favorability rating in Israel once clocked in at 4 percent. Say what you will about the Israelis, but they are not slow out of the chute. They know who their friends are.

So would I support Rick Perry for president? Hell, yes! As the last nail that hasn’t been hammered down in this country, I agree with Rick that there are already too damn many laws, taxes, regulations, panels, committees, and bureaucrats. While Obama is busy putting the hyphen between “anal” and “retentive” Rick will be rolling up his sleeves and getting to work.

    From the Alter article:

I want to know, on a substantive basis, why you think he deserves to be in a dead heat with Mitt Romney and Rick Perry and only a few points ahead of Ron Paul and Michele Bachmann in a new Gallup Poll. Is it just that any president — regardless of circumstances and party — who presides over 9 percent unemployment deserves to lose?

I’d like to know that as well. He should be much further behind. It’s not so much the >9% unemployment; it’s the constant >9% unemployment that was never supposed to be above 8% that is really more like 17%.

Good morning Hamsters. A lovely and cool 72 at 6 seems to be the legacy of yesterday’s front that made it this far if you believe our weathervane that steadily pointed N most of the morning. Alas, this is fading fast.

Regarding the Storm of the Century balderdash, of course things are worse when the NE is affected, those elites so studiously looking down their long noses at the rest of the country in their insistence all is disaster because they are the victims. Nevermind the good folk of the Carolinas who are sensibly taking care to prepare for Irene without hysterical TV coverage. But then, they’re merely southerners.

Are we going to see Mayor Bloomberg standing in the wind and rain, up to his knees in floodwaters, being interviewed by a hapless TV reporter ordered to stand out there risking life and limb for a good picture? Now that I would like to see, at least Bloomberg standing out there. 🙂

A few weeks ago California jumped on the National Popular Vote bandwagon:

California is the latest state to sign on to the NPV with Gov. Jerry Brown’s signature of a bill passed by the Legislature, making it nine states, totaling 132 electoral votes. Once a majority of Electors – 270 – is reached, the NPV compact requires participating states to pledge their Electors to the highest vote-getting presidential candidate, assuring his election.

Personally, I think it’s highly likely that NPV is unconstitutional. But I must admit I have a dark longing to see it go into effect, have Jimmy Dick win the popular vote, have California give all its 55 electoral votes to him, and watch “Progressives” spontaneously combust en masse.

Weird, BUTT he broke 9 outta’ 12 clay pigeons at Clear Creek Gun range on his first time out, using a youth model Remmington 20 Ga pump. Your mission, Jim (and readers named something else), should you decide to accept it, is to identify where Obama has been a poor decision-maker. What, specifically, has he done wrong on policy?

Where has he made actual decisions on actual issues? He defers decisions on anything of substance to someone else. He has no discernible policy on virtually anything; he lurches toward whatever offers him the biggest personal benefit at that moment.

What, specifically, would you have done differently to create jobs?

I would have done absolutely nothing and let things work out on their own. Had we done that, we’d likely be enjoying robust growth right now and be a few trillion dollars richer.

Of course Obama is still on Martha’s Vineyard.

When the weather turns bad, he just jumps into the car and heads to the airport. The roads will be cleared for him and all air traffic will stop so he can take off. No traffic jams or flight delays for him. The little people, however, will have to wait even longer to catch a ferry or to take off. He’s still there because waiting to leave the island is for the little people.

Any of you people know of a good/decent Windows-based backup app that:
    (required)
    1. is free
    2. runs in the background
    3. will backup to a network drive
    (optional, but important)
    4. backs up only files that have changed
    5. can detect when network drive is available or not

I use Carbonite for my home systems and really like it a lot. This is for my work laptop. We have space on a network drive we can use for backups, but the problem is remembering to back things up and waiting while manual copies are done (I have lots of files I modify; some big, some small and it’s hard remembering when and which were modified).

I almost lost everything last weekend due to a hard drive failure. I don’t want that to actually happen.

My assistant’s 9 month old daughter just made a quick appearance here, and I gave it to her. She loves the bear, and from what I’m hearing, won’t give it up even to get strapped into her car seat. When she was carried out of the office by her daddy, she had one leg in her mouth and a big grin behind it.

KBR is asking a woman who sued them over allegations of sexual assault to pay up.

Jamie Leigh Jones filed a civil lawsuit against the company, saying she was raped while working for KBR in Iraq in 2005.

But last month, a Houston jury ruled against her.

Now, KBR is demanding that she pay their attorney fees.

The company said Jones’ lawsuit was frivolous and that the law allows for attorney fees to be awarded to the prevailing party.

I’m in favor of loser pays for civil suits. It’s not necessarily fair that Ms. Jones be asked to pay all of KBR’s legal fees, but she should be liable for at least some. What seems fair to me is that you should be liable to pay the winning party the lesser of the amount they spent on their legal fees and the amount you did.

If I am harmed by a defective product, I want to have recourse to the courts, but the ability of a major company to field a battalion of lawyers would make the prospect of losing too harsh. Reimbursing the winning side for an amount I am willing to spend on my own behalf seems fair.

In the case of contingency fees, the losing lawyers would have to pay up.

    Crazy eyes never lie:

When the time came to put up or shut up, Jones’ “gang-rape” claim simply disappeared. DNA evidence showed she’d had sex with one only man, and he claimed it was consensual.

In fact, the whole crime disappeared: After an investigation, no criminal charges were brought.

Instead, Jones’ lawyer brought a civil suit against KBR and its employees — with a much lower burden of proof — alleging only a routine he-said, she-said date-rape case.

Jones’ claim that she had been drugged with Rohypnol was demolished by tests taken by a female military doctor the day after the alleged attack. Rohypnol is detectable for 72 hours, but there was no trace of it, or any “date rape” drug, in her system.

Jones said the attack was so brutal that her breast implants were ruptured and her pectoral muscles torn, requiring massive reconstructive surgery. This was contradicted not only by the female doctor who examined her the next day, but also by her own plastic surgeon back in Houston.

Her claim that KBR management had held her at gunpoint in a shipping container vanished when it turned out she had only remembered that part of the story two years after it supposedly happened (coincidentally, just as the media frenzy began).

Perhaps the Rohypnol made her forget something else: KBR employees, including security guards, don’t even carry guns, much less machine guns.

Even before leaving for Iraq with KBR at the age of 20, Jones had made rape accusations against two other men. A few years earlier, she told a doctor her boyfriend had raped her, and right before leaving for Iraq she accused a KBR supervisor of raping her. There was no evidence she was raped in Iraq other than her word — and she was already 0-for-2 on rape allegations.

Dude, I’m gonna side with the jury on this one.

Fox was standing inside a small shed when a .45-caliber rifle bullet passed through the shed’s door and pierced his heart.

If you’ve got a perp penned up inside a shed, while you’re outside with a rifle, you call the cops and tell him not to come out until they get there. If he tries to come out, you’ve got a good case, but if you shoot him through. the. door. you screwed up.

I’m guessing it was the bullet holes in the door that convinced the jury.

I think a prosecutor would be able to make a reasonable case that a jury would not convict on grounds of reasonable doubt. If I were sitting on the jury, I wouldn’t vote to convict the property owner of a crime, and I doubt you’d be able to find 12 people in Colorado who would. It would have been a waste of taxpayer’s money.

Civil court was the proper place to try this. The property owner should have settled out of court.

    OR;

He should have told the perp to come out and then shoot him in the yard. He could have made a believable case of being in danger if he’s laying in the yard with those knives on him.

But shooting through a door is only allowed in actual combat situations where you know the guy on the other side is armed with a gun or explosive device.

. . . . .AHEM, SARGE can you hear me? The VSRs climbed over the fence and this was prolly not their first time over that fence. The victim,(car lot owner), had been burgled several times previously in very recent past. The theft(s) represent food off of his table. The VSRs were treated far more gently than what they deserved by the victim. Don’t forget that the VSRs were where they knew they should not be and were armed. The civil jury should have done exactly the same thing as the criminal grand jury and found for the victim.
When you break into/onto someone’s property with the obvious intent to steal, you take your life in your own hands. IF more property owners would follow suit, the VSRs would, perhaps, think of a better way to support their drug habit or wissin quit and be a productive citizen. I kind of look at as “suicide by wissed off property owner”.

About 11 years ago a homeless crowd set up a cardboard city under the I45 and Scott Street overpass. Needless to say break-ins became common. They were smashing out windows and doors to break in. Like a few neighbors, I was camping out at the office to stop this. The machine shop owner down the street had one of the bums lined up in his sights. The bum had kicked in a sky light and dropped in. The owner thought about the grand jury and civil suit (those bums are always somebody’s dearly departed), and decided it was not worth it. I think he was right. Now we use web cams and call a security service. I watched a break in live once and called HPD. They brought a bunch of guys and Rin-Tin-Tin. Caught the guy hiding under a sink. The crack heads know the place is watched and problems are down to a nuisance level.

Bonecrusher, here’s a little comment on the 45-70 ballistics: Bullet weights in factory-loaded cartridges run from 300 to 540 grains, and are loaded with bullets capable of fully penetrating a cape buffalo. Quick-expanding hollowpoints or heavy bullets made of solid brass or copper offer outstanding performance on small whitetails or massive pachyderms. Eighty years after being declared obsolete, the .45-70 is now more popular than ever, due in large part to Marlin’s introduction of the modern Model 1895 levergun.

OSI reportedly just released a new comic book titled Methadone Man and Buprenorphine Babe — which encourages drug addicts to use Methadone and Buprenorphine to combat heroin and other opioid drug withdrawals and even to fight HIV.

I originally found this Pajamas Media link from Patterico’s site.

Remember this story from July 20th? The essentials are, that a science team was working on a paper using CERN data that seemed to show a link between cosmic rays and the formation of clouds in earth’s atmosphere. This would be a key finding; cloud cover has a massive impact on temperatures on the earth’s surface. CERN, for its part, was pre-emptively trying to keep scientists from opining about the data, in effect muzzling a science story as it unfolded. That’s a big science no-no.

CERN Update: Cosmic Ray Data will Force Climate Models to be ‘Substantially Revised’

I kinda figured those climate models were not accurate.

Biden has condemned the one-child policy in the past and, while a Delaware senator, in 2000, Biden called China’s one-child policy “beyond the pale” in a speech on the Senate floor. “No member of Congress condones the practice of coerced abortion in China or anyplace else,” he said, according to Delaware online.

Yet, Biden was one of 24 Democrats and 53 senators voting to defeat an amendment that year by then-Sen. Jessie Helms, a North Carolina Republican, for a non-binding resolution from the Senate condemning the one-child policy. He claims that doing so would jeopardize trade relations with the large Asian nation.

Somebody said to me a few years ago there was no difference between conservtives and liberals. I said this off the cuff, and it was a keeper: Conservatives promote the protection of innocent life and the punishment of the evil. Liberals promote the destruction of innocent life and the protection of those who are evil.

A woman goes to the doctor all black and blue …

    Doctor: “What happened?”

Woman: “Doctor, I don’t know what to do. Every time my husband comes home drunk on Bud Light he beats me to a pulp.”

Doctor: “I have a real good remedy for that. When your husband comes home drunk on Bud Light, just take a glass of sweet tea and start swishing it in your mouth but don’t swallow. Just keep swishing and swishing until he goes to bed in his Bud Light stupor.”

Two weeks later the woman comes back to the doctor looking fresh and reborn.

Woman: “Doctor, that was a brilliant idea. Every time my husband came home drunk on Bud Light, I swished with sweet tea. I swished and swished, and he didn’t touch me!”

Doctor: “You see how much keeping your mouth shut helps?”
