Gaddafi’s rule crumbling as rebels enter heart of Tripoli

http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/middle-east/libyan-rebels-converging-on-tripoli/2011/08/21/gIQAbF3RUJ_print.htmlTRIPOLI, Libya — Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi’s four-decade-long rule over the country was crumbling at breakneck speed as hundreds of rebel fighters swept into Tripoli and took control Monday of the symbolically significant Green Square in the heart of the city.
With rebel leaders saying late Sunday that Gaddafi’s compound was surrounded, that his son Saif al-Islam had been captured and that his presidential guard had surrendered, the six-month-old battle for control of Libya appeared to be hurtling toward a dramatic finale.
The rebel advance had unfolded with surprising speed throughout the day as fighters converged on the capital from three directions. In areas under rebel control, opposition flags fluttered, while jubilant residents honked horns, set off fireworks and stomped on posters of Gaddafi.
Reporters traveling with rebel forces said Gaddafi’s defenses were melting away faster than had been expected. There were reports of entire units fleeing as rebels entered the capital from the south, east and west, and his supporters inside the city tearing off their uniforms, throwing down their weapons and attempting to blend into the population.
A Tripoli-based activist said the rebels had secured the seaport, where several hundred reinforcements for the opposition had arrived by boat, and were in the process of evicting Gaddafi loyalists from the Mitiga air base on the eastern edge of the city.
“The Gaddafi regime is clearly crumbling,” said a statement issued by NATO, whose five-month-old aerial bombing campaign, ostensibly launched to protect civilians from attacks by the government, contributed enormously to the erosion of Gaddafi’s defenses.
NATO said Monday it will continue its combat patrols over Libya until Gaddafi loyalists surrender or return to barracks.
In the rebel capital, Benghazi, where huge crowds gathered to celebrate what they hoped was the imminent capture of Tripoli, Transitional National Council leader Mustafa Abdel Jalil announced that Gaddafi’s son Saif al-Islam had been captured.
Rebels in Tripoli also said that Gaddafi’s eldest son, Mohammed, had surrendered after fighters stormed his home.
There was no information about Gaddafi’s whereabouts, though he had issued a defiant speech earlier in the day in which he insisted that he was in Tripoli and would not surrender. “We cannot go back until the last drop of our blood. We will defend the city. I am here with you,” he said in the audio statement, purportedly broadcast live. “Go on, go forward!”
But it appeared that his control had already unraveled as the rebels swept into the capital, encountering only pockets of resistance along the way.

Got this in my email from one of my cronies. Noticed the date was last year, but this is the first time I’ve seen it. What reason could OBH possibly have had for turning this offer down?
IBM Turned Down By Obama
Can this be true? All possible support confirms.. National media seems to have taken a pass on this. It would tend to substantiate The idea that the Pres wants things to ” fail ” to then require that the Gov take over the task. IBM offered to help reduce Medicare fraud for free… The offer is true. Mort Zuckermann, US News and World Report, a Democrat, was Interviewed On Fox and confirmed it. IBM has confirmed it. You won’t believe it .
IBM offered to help reduce Medicare fraud for free… What if I told you that the Chairman and CEO of IBM, Samuel J. Palmisano, approached President Obama and members of his administration before the healthcare bill debates with a plan that would reduce healthcare expenditures by $900 billion?
Given the Obama Administration’s adamantcy that the United States of America simply had to make healthcare (read: health insurance) affordable for even the most dedicated welfare recipient, one would think he would have leaned forward in his chair, cupped his ear and said, “Tell me more!” And what if I told you that the cost to the federal government for this program was nothing, zip, nada, zilch? And, what if I told you that, in the end and after
two meetings, President Obama and his team, instead of embracing a program that was proven to save money and one that was projected to save almost one trillion dollars – a private sector program costing the taxpayers nothing, zip, nada, zilch – said, “Thanks but no thanks” and then embarked on passing one of the most despised pieces of legislation in US history? Well, it’s all true. Samuel J. Palmisano, the Chairman of the Board and CEO for IBM, said in a recent Wall Street Journal interview that he offered to provide the Obama Administration with a program that would curb healthcare claims fraud and abuse by almost one trillion dollars but the Obama White House turned the offer down. Mr. Palmisano is quoted as saying during a taping of The Wall Street Journal’s Viewpoints program on
September 14, 2010: “We could have improved the quality and reduced the cost of the healthcare system by $900 billion…I said we would do it for free to prove that it works. They turned us down.” A second meeting between Mr. Palmisano and the Obama Administration took place two weeks later, with no change in the Obama Administration’s stance. A call placed to IBM on October 8, 2010, by FOX News confirmed, via a spokesperson, that Mr. Palmisano stands by his statement. Speaking with FOX News’ Stuart Varney, Mort Zuckerman, Editor-in-Chief of US News & World Report, said, “It’s a little bit puzzling because I think there is a huge amount of both fraud and inefficiency that American business is a lot more comfortable with and more effective in trying to reduce. And this is certainly true because the IBM people have studied this very carefully And when Palmisano went to the White House and made that proposal, it was based upon a lot of work and it was not accepted. And it’s really puzzling…These are very, very responsible people and don’t have a political ax to grind. In Mr. Obama’s shunning of a private sector program that would have saved our country almost $1 trillion in healthcare expenditures, presented to him as he declared a “crisis in healthcare,” he proves two things beyond any doubt: that he is anti-
Capitalist and anti-private sector in nature and that he can no longer be trusted to tell the truth in both his political declarations or espoused goals.Video here:

How much of the credit of the war will he claim for himself
If he hadn’t been personally responsible for taking out Bin Laden and showing that he is in charge of hope and change, the rebels would have been disheartened and would have hung their heads and shuffled back to grovel.
Dang Boney, I thought you knew that.

Good morning Hamsters. Whee, a pleasant 73 at 6 and ground mist over the neighborhood, but that means it’s going to be hot this afternoon. Again. Don’t know how hot it got yesterday since we were out for dinner in the afternoon and got back home under some cooling but otherwise useless–to us–clouds. But other folks got benefit, and it was nice to see dark clouds around again. Green is busting out all over from the 5/100 ” we got on the weekend. Won’t last long without more falling.
Gee, it’s possible ole Moamar’s days are limited in Libya, and all the news media will no longer have to struggle with how to spell his last name. That rates as an unintended consequence. 🙂

Okay, I can get the relationship part. But does it have to be a sexual relationship? Or is the “sexual” just accepted as fact? Is there so much pressure for teens to have sex these days that it just doesn’t compute to have a relationship while saving the sexual side for marriage?
Of course, this is UT study, not an Aggie one.

Air Force recovers stolen materials from Friday’s raid
By Marco Villarreal
CREATED Aug. 20, 2011Las Vegas, NV (KTNV)- We’re learning more on why the U.S. Air Force raided a local gun store Friday. They say it wasn’t guns they were looking for.
It was an afternoon that rocked businesses near Dean Martin and Flamingo. Local and federal law enforcement agencies swarmed in and served search warrants on Citadel Gun and Safe.
http://www.ktnv.com/news/local/128140053.html
What part of the Posse Comitatus Act does the Air Force not understand?
For them to do this either Martial Law must be declared or the President or Governor sends them in because the normal civilian authorities cannot handle the situation.Posse Comitatus Act
The Posse Comitatus Act is a United States federal law (18 U.S.C. § 1385) passed on June 18, 1878, after the end of Reconstruction, with the intention (in concert with the Insurrection Act of 1807) of substantially limiting the powers of the federal government to use the military for law enforcement.
The Act prohibits members of the Army from exercising normally state law enforcement, police, or peace officer powers that maintain “law and order” on non-federal property (states and their counties and municipal divisions) within the United States.
The statute prohibits Army and Air Force personnel and units of the National Guard under federal authority from acting in a law enforcement capacity within the United States, except where expressly authorized by the Constitution or Congress. The Navy and Marine Corps are prohibited by a Department of Defense directive, not by the Act itself. The Coast Guard, under the Department of Homeland Security, is exempt from the Act.
The original Posse Comitatus Act referred essentially to the United States Army. The Air Force was added in 1956 and the Navy and the Marine Corps have been included by a regulation of the Department of Defense. The United States Coast Guard, when acting in its peacetime capacity, is not included in the Act. (The U.S. Coast Guard was originally part of the Treasury Department, was later part of the Department of Transportation, and is now
within the Department of Homeland Security.) However, if, in wartime, a portion of the Coast Guard were subsumed within the Department of the Navy, as it was during World War II, that portion would lose its federal police power authority and responsibility over the federal law-enforcement duties of its civilian mission. This law is often relied upon to prevent the Department of Defense from interfering in domestic law enforcement. -

When Personally Forced to Choose, Socialism Sucks.
by Jason BradleyCase in point: College students take a pass on GPA redistribution.
Oliver Darcy, a recent college graduate, proposes that students with good grades contribute their GPA to their academically sluggish friends. He argues that this is how the federal government takes wealth from the country’s high wage earners and distributes it to the low income earners.
“They all earn their GPA,” said Darcy in an interview. “So we asked them if they’d be interested in redistributing the GPA points that they earned to students who may be having trouble getting a high GPA.”
Darcy, who films his encounters with teachers and fellow students, doesn’t have much luck selling this theory.
He said many students on college campuses support high taxes on the rich, but when put into relative terms, cringed at the thought of spreading around their academic wealth

(CNN) — When someone sends me an outlandish, ridiculous, asinine and flat-out dumb tweet, I will quickly give them a Stuck on Stupid Tweet of the Day award. So when it comes to those folks who are whining, complaining and making hay out of President Barack Obama taking a week off to go on vacation with his wife and children in Martha’s Vineyard, let me be clear that all of you fools have earned that award!
Every year, we can count on nutcases from the right throwing temper tantrums about President Obama going on vacation. And when President George W. Crawford did not have the appearance of richness or lavishness. It was well known that it was set up for presidential functions as well as presidential down time. When Bush went there, it did not have the appearance of spending taxpayer money.
TBO and wife prefer to jet set to Spain and Martha’s Vineyard, in a time when so many of their constituents are losing homes and wondering how to buy their next meal.
Nobody says the president doesn’t deserve some vacation time. It’s a hard job, especially the way TBO is doing it. However, what he does and how he behaves speaks volumes as to how he feels about the people he
rulesgoverns. As they say on talk radio, the optics are bad. Very bad. -

He obviously doesn’t get it.
Crawford did not have the appearance of richness or lavishness. It was well known that it was set up for presidential functions as well as presidential down time. When Bush went there, it did not have the appearance of spending taxpayer money.

Obambie doesn’t have a sense of how people’s perception of his actions effect their perception of him. His lavish and frequent vacations when the country is in the toilet does not sit well with many people. Add to the mix the Mochele just had to be there 4 hours early at a significant cost just adds to “let them eat cake” perception people have of them. This is just one of many instances where they make bad choices and paint themselves as above the rest of us.
They really need an image make-over.

RE; O’Erkle’s numerous vacations: When Bush went to the ranch, he was going to his own property and other than the transportation costs, the taxpayers were on the hook for ZERO DOLLARS. The ranch was not a luxo-palace and Laura Bush NEVER took a jet simply to get there a few hours early, MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOCHELLE has done that repeatedly and has even had the dog shipped separately to add insult to injury. Obummer has played more golf in 2 1/2 years than Bush did in 8.

I believe Bush decline to play golf when the war started, saying it wouldn’t be right for him to be seen on the golf course while men and women were put in harm’s way.
More class in his pinkie than TBO in all his body, including his swollen ego.
TBO needs Lasix for pride and arrogance. EGO-LASIX! That’s what he needs!

I have no idea what it’s going to be, but sometime between now and November 2012 Michelle Antoinette is going to put something in her mouth (besides her own foot) that will seal the fate of this presidency.
Peacock?
Unicorn?
Rabbit stew?
Any guesses what it might be?Might I suggest a Ridley’s Kemp sea turtle soup with side order of roasted whooping crane shis kabob?

Robert M would undoubtedly find 9 other comments about FLOTUS with the ear buds. If I’m not mistaken, even in a dim shot through the limo window, she has a sourpuss look. Actually, they both do. And is that a limo they are riding in, or a tank, or what? -

Interesting find, glad you posted it. The rife hypocrisy of FLOTUS on the warpath about obesity, and yet most pix of her these days show her shoving something into her mouth.I have no idea what it’s going to be, but sometime between now and November 2012 Michelle Antoinette is going to put something in her mouth (besides her own foot) that will seal the fate of this presidency.

My guesses are along the same line as Boney’s thinking: something endangered (how about that West Texas lizard?) or maybe just illegal in the US (dolphin or whale meat)…

Maybe that will be his excuse for not running again. His family is so important and the job is taking such a toll that he will humbly 🙂 chose not to re-run. -

I must take exception to the remarks about their personal bond. I have seen nothing to suggest that Obummer is not a gallant husband. Contrast to numerous other presidents where the facts are well and widely known. On her part, she might now be a junior partner in a law firm somewhere, had she not accepted his proposal, but she doesn’t exhibit any recognition of that fact. -

I think Hitlery is gonna jump in and challenge him from the lefter position. Perhaps she will challenge him from the right side of the far left wing or try to triangulate that he just did not get liberalism correct so we need to try her brand instead his failed policy.
Dya think the people have been aroused from their slumber yet? Do they realize what this wiss-wad is doing to the country, Do the people realize how far left wing-nut-bat-schizzle-crazy the LSM is and how they have been lied to for 40 years? -

Because they are in something black with odd windows, I thought just for a split second they had airlifted Blunderbus out to the island. But of course the presidential bus had the windows painted black. Whatever this vehicle is, ya have to wonder if there are 20 SVUs ahead of them and another 20 behind, to escort these “-OTUS’es” down to the beach.

Reply to No. 35: I saw that picture of the two trying to sneak off for some time at the beach without the kids, the mother-in-law and however many other family relatives that the taxpayers are paying their vacation for. So if you want captions, try this “Top Ten” list of captions on the conversation going on inside that car:
1) You know Barry, it sure is nice to live off the taxpayers.
2) Living and especially eating off the taxpayers finally makes me “proud” of this country.
3) Barry, your hard work deserves more vacation time. Look at these brochures I have.
4) Before we get to the beach, I want to stop off and get some french fries.
5) Either I’m eating too many french fries or this backseat is too small for the two of us.
6) Barry, why did you have to bring that damn “sand wedge” along on this trip?
7) Barry, somehow you got to figure out how to fool the voters into giving you “four more years”.
8) Michelle, do you think you can adjust to life outside the White House.
9) Michelle, you know all that fried food is starting to give you zits.
10) Michelle, I hope our kids finish my jobs creation plan before our vacation ends.
There, does that help explain what is going on in that gas guzzling car they are riding in? Are you sure they are not sneaking off to a fundraiser?

You have a good point there Hammie; it would be really hard to hide behind the machinery of the Texas lege ifn it comes down to whether he signs his name or not. But no, that’s not the line of succession in Texas. The President pro tempore of the Senate would become Lt. Governor temporarily. The full senate would then elect one of their own to be Lt. Gov. He would be elevated to governor, then they would do it again to select a new Lt. Gov. Joe the Devil is third in line.

Governor Perry gets a hearty endorsement… sort of
America’s trial lawyers are getting ready to make the case against one of their biggest targets in years: Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
Among litigators, there is no presidential candidate who inspires the same level of hatred – and fear – as Perry, an avowed opponent of the plaintiffs’ bar who has presided over several rounds of tort reform as governor.
And if Perry ends up as the Republican nominee for president, deep-pocketed trial lawyers intend to play a central role in the campaign to defeat him.

#71 Hambone, Yup, they’re a little tastier than the Snappers. In south Alabama we had a lot of Snappers but very few Soft Shell Cooters, so iffin’ you caught one you were defecating in high cotton! When I first moved into my neighborhood, here in Webster, back in the early 80’s, I caught a huge snapper in my front yard, this was in the Summer and it was real dry so the turtle may have been looking for water. I dressed it and fried most of the meat and made turtle soup with the rest. Dayaam, it was good. 😀

You don’t know what you’re missing. That said, one my favorite meals is a 1/2 dozen young Squirrels, battered and fried and served with homemade biscuits, grits and gravy! This would be breakfast, of course. When I first moved away from home I lived in Fort Walton Beach Florida for about a year and then moved to Brunswick Georgia. A few months later I married my lovely bride and we generally made trips home to Alabama about every other month. In the fall of the year, my Dad would save/freeze 6 of the youngest/most tender squirrels that he bagged in October when we came home for Thanksgiving, he’d invite Lil’ Sister over and we would pig out! My wife, (a country gal) had never eaten squirrel before because her Daddy was a quail hunter. But now it’s one of her favorite meals.

In answer to the question, “Is Squirrel Meat Halaal?”, the following was posted at the Ummah.com Forum:
Good news for New Jersey squirrel eaters
October 30, 2007
NEW YORK (AFP) — Squirrel eaters in the US state of New Jersey have been told that the bushy-tailed rodents are likely safe to eat, after earlier being advised the unlikely delicacies could contain toxic metals.
The Environmental Protection Agency said earlier this year it had discovered high levels of lead in a squirrel taken from near a waste dump in the Ringwood area and advised people to eat the rodents no more than twice a week.
Officials have now said the test results were an error.
“A blender that was used to process the tissues into usable samples was defective and was identified as the source of the lead contamination,” the Environmental Protection Agency said in a statement dated Monday.
The New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife describes squirrel as “good table fare,” offering recipes for squirrel chowder, stew and barbecue.
Just wanted all you hillbillies to know you were safe with Allah and Sharia Law.
Just be sure you don’t eat the brains. They contain Mad Cow Disease, don’t you know.

FWIW; I don’t like brains of any kind. The sweet taste and mealy texture is not to my liking. BUTT if you cook the heads to 180 degrees they are OK.

There was a demographic study I remember from maybe 30 years ago that showed how there were some number of different groups in the US. A group was a socioeconomic, cultural, behavioral, shared-origins construct, consisting of citizens who were alike in important ways and recognized others in the same group to be kindred spirits. People who were more than 3 groups’ worth of separation along a continuum from your own group were like aliens to you. I’ll try to dig this up sometime and see if I still think it has any validity.

Au contraire, mon frère. Mad cow disease is caused by a simple (but abnormal) protein that is not easily destroyed.
Incineration [of prions] is possible, but it isn’t as easy as burning the carcass in a fire. Temperatures of more than 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit — sometimes up to 1,800 degrees — are required to effectively neutralize prions. Unlike most bacteria, regular cooking won’t help at all.

A few days ago this august assemblage of our merry band ensconced on the comfy couch briefly discussed the large and cute capybara native to South America. Long ago and far away during our grad school days in the 60s, a frequent stop for an evening out was the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison–it was free. A stroll through it and an icecream cone topped the evening. Our monthly income in those days was ~$550. Everybody faint together now. Spouse had a stipend from the Atomic Energy Commission, and I worked as an editor in the publications department of UW Extension.
The zoo had a capybara in residence, and a big fellow he was. We used to visit him every time there, maily because he was also a favorite of our neighbors downstairs in the apartment building, students also. We never offered him any forbidden treats–or any treats–but he sometimes got to sample our neighbor’s cooking failures. Very much under cover of course. Guess we wanted to see if he survived them. 🙂 He did as far as we knew.
