If word were to get out that women were in fact capable of making logical decisions and taking care of themselves
El Gordo, are you on medication or other drugs today, or a victim of identity theft? This does not sound like you!
My apologies for this post yesterday. In my haste, I failed to insert the word “some” between the words “that” and “women.” I can see how the post as written could be confusing to some and that an incorrect inference could be drawn. I might make an effort to be more careful in the future, but I doubt it.

For all the violent, racist rallying the Tea Party has done, all that had to be uttered was treasonous to get their attention? Who knew.

I’d better not catch any of you good folks engaging in any illegal yard watering or car washing. Can you believe this? Any more controls that need to be implemented? Can we burn stuff since we can’t water our yards now? Maybe start driving on the wrong side of the road or run a few red lights? Gotta have some kind of activity to engage in that’s not illegal.
I know – let’s go sell a bunch of guns across the border to some gangsters. Or print up a bunch of currency and throw it out on the street. That should be no problem.

Awright Ted Nugent, You gotta’ killum before you grillum.
I was clicking through the vast wasteland that is cable TV last night and stumbled across Wuss Blister interviewing his master. I only watched a little of it before I grabbed the trash can so I could puke. The most disgusting spectacle that I’ve seen in a long time, Wuss pitching softballs with NO follow up to his Messiah and Obama blaming everyone but himself for the mess HE got us in. A pathetic little man interviewed by one of his adoring followers.

The degree of psychological “projection” practiced by this administration is breath-taking.
Campaigning in Iowa on Monday, the Texas governor said he would consider it “treasonous” if Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke “prints more money between now and the election” in November 2012 — a fresh sign of the political heat the central bank faces as it tries to right the stumbling U.S. economy.
“If this guy prints more money between now and the election, I don’t know what y’all will do to him in Iowa, but we would treat him pretty ugly down in Texas,” Perry said to laughter from supporters in Iowa.
“Printing more money to play politics at this particular time in American history is almost treacherous, treasonous in my opinion,” he said.
/snip
“I certainly think threatening the Fed chairman is not a good idea,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said.I don’t see the physical threat in the above quote. I think it is reasonably clear that this is a rhetorical point, and not a physical threat. I certainly does not rise to the level of “we’re gonna kill Romney” now does it?

I know – let’s go sell a bunch of guns across the border to some gangsters.
Gunrunner/Fast and Furious just keeps on getting worse.
Firearms illegally trafficked under the ATF’s Fast and Furious program turned up at the scenes of at least 11 “violent crimes” in this country in addition to being involved in the death of a U.S. Border Patrol agent in southern Arizona last year, the Justice Department has acknowledged to Congress.
Although Justice did not provide any details about those crime scenes, it has been learned that the additional violent crimes occurred in cities such as Phoenix, where Operation Fast and Furious was managed, and as far away as El Paso, Texas, where a total of 42 Fast and Furious weapons were seized in two separate crimes.

If I were Rick Perry right now, I would come out of the chute ranting about how Obama has tried his best to slow Texas down, be it NASA, moving the Humvee plant out of Sealy, crushing the gulf drilling business, using the EPA to usurp Texas air quality standards and prevent the opening of a refinery in Corpus Christi and threatening to do more on the ship channel, using endangered species act to try to shut down the oil fields of west Texas, doing squat to stem the flow of illegal immigrants who suck our social services dry, and on and on – only to have the Texas economy outshine the rest of the country due to low taxes, right to work laws, and a legislature that only meets every other year and tries to stay out of the way the rest of the time.
What else would anyone need to know. Now don’t get me wrong – I’m not a real gung ho Perry man, but I’d try to get the devil elected to get rid of the Messiah right now.

Gotta go tend to things. I’ll leave you with this one:
A morose man was sitting at the bar staring at his drink when a biker steps up, grabs his drink and gulps it down in one swig.
“Well, whatcha’ gonna do about it?”
“This is the worst day of my life,” he replies. “I am a complete failure. I was late to a meeting and my boss fired me. When I went to the parking lot, my car had been stolen and I don’t have any insurance. I left my wallet in the cab I took home and found my wife with another man.
“So I came to this bar to work up courage to put an end to it all. I buy a drink, and I drop a poison capsule in and sit here watching it dissolve and then you show up and drink the whole thing.
But enough about me, how is your day going?”

I took a closer look at my garden this morning. Most mornings I turn the sprinkler on from the house and turn it off later, refusing to walk through the growing heat. It seems my garden likes the sprinkler better than my hand held sprayer, and is doing much better now. My pumpkin and yellow squash are doing great and taking over. I have some self-seeded basil popping up, as well as some self-seeded arugula. My pak choi is doing much better in the pot than their mother plant did in the bed. My chard is still hanging on, and my kale is starting to sprout new leaves from the main stalk – surprise! (I actually used some chard, kale, and pak choi in my stir fry last night.) My hot pepper plant is loving life and producing.
Unfortunately, my fourth cantaloupe vine of the summer has fallen to the squirrels. That bed is just not doing well. There’s a big red stray dog that appears to have taken a liking to my other veggie bed, and has dug himself a place to sleep. Fortunately he didn’t kill my bell pepper or parsley doing so.
I think it’s time I start putting those cayenne peppers to use. I have a small cache of them now. Time to soak ’em, blend ’em, and spray ’em all over the garden. Until my hubby finds the BB gun he “borrowed” from the house.

All water utilities are required to have a Drought Contingency Plan.
Each plan is customized for the individual water system.
There are various Triggers for each Stage of the plan. Most plans have a Stage 1 Response involving VOLUNTARY restrictions on water use with a goal of reducing demand by 10-20%. Stage 2 Response usually involves making the restrictions mandatory.By the second week of July, my water system was at 75% of capacity. My six wells can only produce so much water in a 24 hour period.
Some may be annoyed by the restrictions, but they are really going to be annoyed when they turn on the tap and nothing comes out.

I’m just saying that water use restrictions don’t have a damn thing to do with Big Brother or government over regulation.
It’s a simple matter of supply and demand.
And further, water utilities have no control over water main leaks. Piping, valves and fittings get old and they break. Clay soils are very active, depending on moisture content extremes, aggravating the leak problems. I have been averaging more than thirty leaks a month this summer. I have maybe 500 miles of pipe in the ground. Houston has thousands of miles pipe in the ground and reportedly is averaging 600 leaks a day. They have 40 crews working around the clock doing repairs. -

What Hubby and I haven’t figured out is why, in extreme situations as this, why the city doesn’t call on some private contractors to make some of these repairs. We do them all the time, and we certainly have the equipment and personnel to get to the mains. Joe Blow’s Household Plumbing can’t do it, but there are over 40 names on the city’s approved list to work on the water mains that they could call on.
They’d probably get more work done, for one thing. Our guys don’t sit around and our crews don’t have three supervisors on one job site.

Oh, and Hubby was talking to me just last night about a leak at fire hydrant down the street. The city sent a guy to place a little blue flag to mark the leak, but he didn’t take that extra step to turn the valve to cut the water flow to the hydrant and stop the leak. No telling how many gallons of water have been lost because he either didn’t think or didn’t think he had the authority to take that one extra minute to find and turn the valve.
There are some really good people working for the city. Most of the drones, however, keep their brains in their cell phones, only acting when told to.

The next step would be what Big Jolly blogged about down there in Speedtrap. Not enough water in the system to fight fires. All that equipment running non-stop in this heat must be causing problems as well.

It’s possible that he turned off the hydrant, but the leak is on the other side of that valve.
But you are probably correct.
The City probably pays that guy 60’grand a year to ride around, confirm leaks, and mark it for a utility locate request. And some other guy gets paid to ride around with a valve wrench. -

At his speaking engagements, Obama stressed the need to extend payroll tax cuts and to rebuild the nation’s roads, bridges and other union-made infrastructure kinds of stuff. Also some free-trade agreements. This was a repetition of what he had said on the first day of his Grand Ground Tour.
On his 938th day in office President Obama also said he would soon have a completed jobs plan. Maybe early fall, something like that. And he complained, “We could do even more if Congress is willing to get in the game.”
Tomorrow with all this heavy work in his rear-view mirror, the president is scheduled to join his family on Martha’s Vineyard for a nine-day vacation.
I used to think this guy was smart. He’s not smart at all. Our Boy Wonder has been told all his life how special he is. It’s no wonder he actually believes it.
I heard him berating congress for not passing free trade agreements with Korea, Columbia, and Brazil. The idiot hasn’t even submitted them to Congress for ratification yet.

But Shannon, how can that be. We have the Messiah in the White House, and these things are not supposed to happen any more.

Oh, and Obambie’s bus was built in Canada, probably by grilled cheese eating non union canuks.
http://www.nypost.com/p/news/national/canucklehead_obama_bus_ted_gyztvw89k5MyKNS4B7Qp7OAnswers a question I had this morning:
The bus was ordered by the Secret Service in July 2010 and delivered two months ago.
That means they began planning this tour sometime in 2009.
He knew then that he’d have to do something like this to get re-elected.

This is enough to make you want to pull your hair out.
A U.S. supercomputer laboratory engaged in classified military research concluded a recent deal involving Chinese-made components that is raising concerns in Congress about potential electronic espionage.
The concerns are based on a contract reached this summer between a computer-technology firm and the National Center for Computational Engineering at the University of Tennessee, whose supercomputers simulate flight tests for next-generation U.S. military aircraft and spacecraft, and simulate submarine warfare for the Navy.
The storage system for the contract calls for using software from U.S. cybersecurity firm Symantec installed over devices made by Huawei Technologies, a Chinese telecommunications giant that U.S. officials have said has close ties to China’s military. Huawei and Symantec formed a joint venture in 2008, with Huawei owning 51 percent of the shares of the enterprise.
Security, schmecurity we don’t have anything to fear. . . . . . . Spoken like a true beaurocrat.

#61 Sarge: I think the order had to be for three buses and not just one, so when they quote the price for one the contract was for 3 and therefore one can reasonable triple the price. . . . .kind of like what he did with Bush’s worst deficit.

The cost is almost beside the point. They are touting this tour as being “Trumanesque”, mimicking Truman’s whistle stop tour in his run for re-election against impossible odds. Purchase of the bus was done to achieve exactly that image.
Design specifications would have had to be written and reviewed, then plans and proposals by vendors would have to be written and submitted and then reviewed (and probably amended and reviewed again) before the order was placed. He took office in January of 2009. The bus was ordered mid 2010. That means that sometime around the end of 2009, they knew he wasn’t going to skate back into the White House on a wave of stupendous recovery and a strong economy, and would need something like this.

#64 Sarge: Let’s not even try to pretend that this is anything other than campaigning for re-election; why the wiss can’t we get the federal election goons to force these expenditures to come out of his campaign instead of SS budgets? That the presstitutes in the LSM aren’t claiming it as outright campaigning is further evidence that they have lost all credibility.
O’erkle is taking his 4th vacation this year, is that correct? How many other people can afford the time, not to mention the money to take 4 vacations before the end of August? I can only imagine that there will be a couple more before the end of the year. Remember how Dan Blather would go on and on when W would spend a long weekend at his ranch? NO double standard at all, nothing to see here folks, just move along.

My friends cow had twins and she rejected one. That calf has been bottle fed for about 6 weeks now and she is really friendly. She is now Daisy the House Cow, but she lives in the barn. She will prolly not be integrated back into the herd, she may wind up being a milk cow. Right now she acts like a playful puppy.

From your link:Sequin, an owner of four cats, was devastated last week after finding part of her neighbor’s cat in her yard.
Four cats = crazy.
“We have raccoons, coyotes and foxes. Sometimes larger animals like lions and bears do come into town,” Jennifer Churchill with Colorado Parks and Wildlife said.
She live in a zoo? All she’s missing is tigers and she’d have a full set with the lions & bears.
I wonder if manbearpig has been spotted recently?

Just to show the liberals, of which there are probably very few that read this website, that I can write captions for anybody no matter what party affiliation, so here goes my “Top Ten” captions for the picture:
1) I’ll bet if I said I have my “sights” set on the White House some anti-gun nut will misinterpret that.
2) Is it always open season on Dummycrats or what?
3) Don’t you know the two of us are driving the anti-gun nuts crazy?
4) Do they give out any points for just “winging” them?
5) Not to be like “Robin Hood”, we will be taking our guns to this fight.
6) I wonder if that certain pansy has even held a gun before?
7) We need to show those clowns in Washington D.C. what Texas politics is like.
8) I didn’t know the President could choose which amendments he wishes to defend or not defend.
9) Let’s shoot all the targets on the “left” and not shoot any on the “right”.
10) Ted, you’ll never guess where I found the most “mo-fo”s.
I hope the liberal readers out there appreciated what I did in writing these captions for Ted and Rick. It’s really hard going against an ABO candidate.

He claimed that he could “hustle” his group into follow the leader. In short, he had no respect for his delegate constituants. On another matter, as Governor, he refused to stop the execution of Scott Willingham, even though DNA overwhelmingly absolved Scott of the arson deaths of his children.

I don’t think so. The cover she’s moving is almost the same shade as the darker square she’s moving the cover to. I think it has to do with the squares surrounding the cover shes moving. It’s seems incredulous but also legitimate.

Notice in the #110 video that the colors change as she drags it across. That is why think it’s a transparency. The shadow of the cylinder does cross the square as she moves it, and the color of the square shifts to what is under that square that is moving. Hence my belief it’s simply a transpareny, and will reflect whatever color it’s adjacent to.

And, yes, beying the Ten Commandments is an ecxellent wya to get there. But I want to be more specific. Catholics definitely believe in being saved by grace. I do too. But I would like to know what the Roman catholic Church doctrine is regarding the role of good works in salvation. It seems that Catholics believe in good works as a necessity and that a person after coming unto God through His mercy in Christ could lose that grace of salvation by not doing good works, namely by sinning and not repenting. I believe in this as well.

I intended to today but my laptop decided that today was the day to test out it’s brakes. Hopefully it’ll be more cooperative soon.
Thanks, wagonburner. Maybe God didn’t want me to know it today. 😉

I’m sure everybody here has heard of the Obama bus being manufactured in Canada. And, of course, the immediate thought from my brain was, “yeah, way to go with that creation of American jobs, Obama”. But, I didn’t think of what Rush said. It give further depth to my retalatory thought.

Well LQQkie here, I just got my “1854 Seated Liberty Half Dime(with arrows)” in the mail. She is a beauty, even if she’s only a EF 40. I’m not sure why, but I have become a big fan of half dimes, maybe because they are silver and really old? This coin was minted Xactly 100 years before I was born. 😉

Darren – here’s a short and sweet Catholic answer: If you have faith in Jesus Christ you are called to live your life like Christ. That means works necessarily come with faith. Faith and works cannot be mutually exclusive.

When it comes to understanding salvation and baptism, I tell my students that baptism opens the doors to God’s grace, but it’s up to us to walk through the doors. Non-Catholics tend to look at baptism as a choice we humans make, whereas Catholics see baptism as a gift bestowed upon us. That’s why we have no problems with infant baptism. Not to mention that infant baptism was referenced in the Bible, as whole households converted.
Was it Peter or Paul that said he “works out his faith in fear and trembling”? If faith in Jesus, accepting him as one’s personal savior, was all we needed to gain access to Heaven, then why would he “work out his salvation in fear and trembling”? It would have been more like “celebrating my salvation with joy and gladness”. That usually throws the confused Evangelical for a loop.

Darren, I am with Tedtam–I am too darn tired lately to get into a big theological discussion. You’ve asked for a simple explanation of the Catholic position on works vis a vis Grace and justification. I contend there is no such thing. The subject does not lend itself to simple explanation.
The closest thing to an abbreviated treatment is contained in the Joint Declaration on The Doctrine of Justification–a document released in 1999 after thirty five years of dialogue between the Catholics and Lutherans.
The pertinent section is as follows.’Please note that
#37 is a statement of where the parties agree
#38 is a statement further clarifying the Catholic position
#39’is a statement further clarifying the Lutheran position4.7 The Good Works of the Justified
37.We confess together that good works – a Christian life lived in faith, hope and love – follow justification and are its fruits. When the justified live in Christ and act in the grace they receive, they bring forth, in biblical terms, good fruit. Since Christians struggle against sin their entire lives, this consequence of justification is also for them an obligation they must fulfill. Thus both Jesus and the apostolic Scriptures admonish Christians to bring forth the works of love.
38.According to Catholic understanding, good works, made possible by grace and the working of the Holy Spirit, contribute to growth in grace, so that the righteousness that comes from God is preserved and communion with Christ is deepened. When Catholics affirm the “meritorious” character of good works, they wish to say that, according to the biblical witness, a reward in heaven is promised to these works. Their intention is to emphasize the responsibility of persons for their actions, not to contest the character of those works as gifts, or far less to deny that justification always remains the unmerited gift of grace.
39.The concept of a preservation of grace and a growth in grace and faith is also held by Lutherans. They do emphasize that righteousness as acceptance by God and sharing in the righteousness of Christ is always complete. At the same time, they state that there can be growth in its effects in Christian living. When they view the good works of Christians as the fruits and signs of justification and not as one’s own “merits”, they nevertheless also understand eternal life in accord with the New Testament as unmerited “reward” in the sense of the fulfillment of God’s promise to the believer. [See Sources for section 4.7].

That’s sound logic to me. If i may
“18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.”
(James 2)
I’ve heard from an Evangelical that this scripture means that one shows **to man** his works to show his Christianity to man. But it is through faith alone that one is saved. I simply reply that my understanding from this scripture is that you have faith in Christ unto salvation but if you choose not to work based on your faith than your faith is dead. And dead faith is nothing to hope for.
Thanks for your reply. I was seeking a short and clear answer.

Tedtam;
From assurances of faith.
“There are few more confusing topics than salvation. It goes beyond the standard question posed by Fundamentalists: “Have you been saved?” What the question also means is: “Don’t you wish you had the assurance of salvation?” Evangelicals and Fundamentalists think they do have such an absolute assurance.
All they have to do is “accept Christ as their personal Savior,” and it’s done. They might well live exemplary lives thereafter, but living well is not crucial and definitely does not affect their salvation. ”
Yup,that’s been my experience with Evangelicals/Pentacostals. Such a concept goes against my faith and it’s never settled well in me personally. It’s always made sense to me that one “should be good” to get to heaven. No doubt that we are saved by grace for none of us deserve God’s salvation nor his blessings I may add. But by His infinite love and mercy, He bestowals them both upon us. Many if not most of his temporal blessings, I find, are unconditional but salvation, I think, has certain conditions upon them.
I’ve come across “Catholic Answers” before and it seems like a very reliable source to explain Catholic doctrine. I’m glad you sent me your own approval. And I had forgotten to mention “mortal sins” to the Evangelical blogger. I did have it in mind but forgot to add it in the conversation/debate. By it’s nature, it says “be good or else”.
So, it does seem that I am accurate to run around the blogoshpere and say that Catholics believe that good works are necessary for salvation.

Shannon;
I actually began reading that 1999 (“Concordia” is it called?) you cited. It was mentioned to me several months ago by an Evangelical Lutheran and he said because of that treatise (if it’s called that) the Evangelical Lutherans were in communon with the Catholic Church. I don’t know how accurate that is though. and Anglican Catholic recently told me that wasn;t the case but I don’t entirely trust that response neither.

Amen to that.

I understand that you are too tireed for a deep theological discussion (which I wasn’t seeking for, just the simple explanations I received tonight) but you also have some armadillos to shoot. Just warn us if Mrs. Shannon will go out and do the shooting. That’s a sight we don’t need to see. 😉
Take care.

Darren – I think the Lutheran position sprang from the Reformation when a Catholic Luther criticized (rightly so) his fellow Catholics for twisting the Gospel so that works were used in an attempt to win favor from God. Similarly the clergy sold indulgences, surely a corruption of God’s plan. Luther’s exit also led to a counter-reformation in the Church but alas, it was too late to mend the rift.

mHarper, well alot of folks don’t realize how much agriculture there is out here in Hawaii. Pineapples are not our only crop, although they are our main export. We also export alot of fish from coast to coast on the mainland. Mexico used to have a thriving pineapple business too until Vietnam undercut them. But most everything we produce costs more because of shipping costs from the mainland. Consequently we consume locally most of what we produce – cattle, coffee, bananas, guava, oranges. That’d being said, I hope he meant Illinois, and that he no longer considers Hawaii “home”.

If a man were marooned on an island and he had not good works to perform for others, does that mean he would be excluded from Heaven? Long story short, God knows who is a good person, and who is contemptible and evil. It is up to Him to weigh it all and decide the final place we shall be. I keep in mind that Christ the man got pretty darn made and went after the people in the temple with a whip and drove them and their livestock out and dumped their tables over. There is a time for righteous indignation, and when talking and making nice won’t do.

Others don’t have to be present with you for you to perform good works. For instance, a lot of people pray for others every night. I think that is a small way you could live more Christ-like.

From Robert Heinlein:
How anybody expects a man to stay in business with every two-bit wowser in the country claiming a veto over what we can say and can’t say and what we can show and what we can’t show — it’s enough to make you throw up. The whole principle is wrong; it’s like demanding that grown men live on skim milk because the baby can’t eat steak.

Howdy Hamsterousians!
Well, here we are again, another evening of “Adventures in Armadilloland” bringing the score to Humans 2, Dillos 0.
Another dillo showed up tonight, larger than Baby but not quite as big as Monster Dillo. This time, having had a little practice in the fine art of dillo pouncing, things went a little quicker.
Mr. Dillo made his way through the bushes while they were being watered and got himself into an open position. I, of course, circled around downwind, box in one hand and cover in the other. Whap! The sprinkler cycles back and smacks the cover (and me)! Dillo beats feet at the noise and scampers about 5 yards away. After a minute he finds himself something to dig for and forgets all about me. Silly dillo.
Stalk. POUNCE! The fight is on! Thumping, bumping, clawing! Cussin’ and fussin’! The stupid cover is far enough away that we have to go through the “scoot the box” exercise again. Aside from taping the cover to my back, there’s no way to do a two-handed pounce and have it nearby.
OK, Dillo is now safely in the box, the tape was in my pocket this time (amazingly enough, it didn’t fall out in the fray) and in the back porch light the cover was secured. There’s enough room in the back seat of trusty vehicle to put the box, and off we go.
Pulling back into the driveway, whom do I see? Baby D!
I get the box out. But he’s fast! And scoots all the way around the house into the back yard. Apparently he remembers the last time when I almost got him, and doesn’t want to stick around this time, either. He has taken shelter under the tool shed. Don’t worry, I’ll get ‘im. Later.
Time for recuperation and that cold adult beverage in the fridge…
‘Nyt all!
(retreats back into LurkCave, contemplating buying new track shoes for catching Baby D)
P.S. Hey Bigs, do you have dillos in Hawaii? Want some? They’re really fun to catch 😀

Lurker, there are no native mammals in Hawaii. All the mammals here are imports…even the rodents. I did have armadillos at my place in Oak Ridge North, and plenty out the back gate in the woods when I lived at FM 1488 and Texas 242 (College Park). I’m just stocking up on ammo in case Obama gets elected again and the whole darn thing falls apart.
