Weekend Open Comments

I guess there’s no media bias:

Chicago, August 11, 2011 – This week U.S. Senator Dick Durbin held a press conference with members of the mainstream media to talk about the downgrade crisis. But the Senator’s scripted storyline veered off-course when a conservative reporter – me – showed up to ask an embarrassing question. Namely, “Senator, you’ve blamed the tea party…but do you bear any responsibility for this downgrade crisis?”
What, you didn’t hear about this incident in the media? For those of you that need more proof that journalism is dead, read on.
/snip
I stood my ground and asked the question a number of times. “You’re not allowed to ask questions during a press conference,” bleated Anderson. “We are going to have you thrown out by the cops,” he said, running interference for Durbin. In addition to doing news for the Illinois Radio Network, Anderson apparently moonlights as an unpaid member of Dick Durbin’s staff.

And, according to John Kerry, et al, this is a “Tea Party Downgrade”. Yep, no responsibility being directed towards the drunken sailor spending policies of the Democrats (assisted by the Republicans). The media will not hold any tender Democrat toes to the fire, and they do whatever they can to assist the liberal agenda and protect their comrades

Then the “regular” media arrive with their puff questions, but the Kelly continues to try to get his questions answered. Some might describe Kelly as rude, when rudeness is considered to be a virtual by some aggressive reporters. Regular media types resent the intrusion and soon try to crowd out .

I’m sure there are a multitude of examples out there. It’s okay with me if they want to report the way they’re doing – as long as they present themselves as biased commentators, not unbiased reporters.

Speaking of media bias, here’s one for all you ignant Texans courtesy of Chrissie Poo. The only good thing about Jimmy Dick getting into the race is we’ll get to see Chrissie’s head explode on a daily basis.

I just found out that my uncle’s suffering is over. I had offered several times to take my mother to see her brother before he died, and she refused me every time. I called her this morning to give her the news, and she told me that my brother was coming tomorrow to take her to see him. I was absolutely dumbstruck and could not speak for several moments.

I guess there’s no understanding some people. She will now have to live with her decisions. I just have to quit being angry at her. I did what I could do, and I after that, it’s all her doing. Or not doing. Whatever.

Excuse me, but I have some things I need to take care of right now. I’ll check in later.

BTW – Chris Mathews is a complete and total hack. He affects me in much the same way as Carville does. I really need to learn to stop letting people push my buttons. It’s not healthy.

Maybe if I just imagine them all riding the short bus as kids, I can deal with it better.

Tedtam, it sounds like your mother may now have some cognitive impairment — this is not just personality, IMHO. And if that is the case, there is no longer any reason to feel anger or resentment over her behavior.

mh42, et al – The reason I’m able to post at such odd hours is that my part time retirement job is at night, and occasionally I can get on line at that time. The other thing about working at night is that it gives you time to think, which is always a dangerous thing. For instance, I got to thinking about Paul Bunyan’s yardstick which he used to measure the distance between the eyes of his beast of burden, Babe the Blue Ox. I believe he measured 42 axe handles and then some. http://americanfolklore.net/folklore/2010/07/babe_the_blue_ox.html

Given that the axe handle is probably as good a unit of measure as anything else, I then began wondering how many it would take to get a good measure of the derriere of the First Lady – I estimate at least 3, but it could be more.

I think it was Walter Cronkite who once defended journalism by stating that liberalism was not a bias, it was just the state of mind of educated people. Or words to that effect. I searched but could not come up with the exact wording or source. There are gazillions of hits for any combination of journalism, bias, liberal, educated.

“The meaner side of life is made visible to most young reporters. I think it affects their sentimental feeling toward their fellow man and that is interpreted by some less-sensitive people as being liberal.” — Unca Walter, 2003

    Sounds awfully patronizing to me.

Most of the welfare recipients are perfectly able-bodied and should be able and required to put forth some actual productive work in return for their upkeep. They all, without exception, had the opportunity to receive at least 12 years of fully paid-for education, yet many decided they had better ways to spend their time.

I realize being poor is no picnic, but these people need to face the consequences of their actions. We need to be a lot less generous with freebie benefits.

Good morning Hamsters. Whew, down to 76 this morning at 6 and fair to middlin’ comfortable before Mr. Sun cllimbed over the treeline. A grogeous setting full Moon lighted the way down the driveway to fetch the paper, and to see her beauty temporarily wiped out thoughts of coming unpleasant temps.

Made it to 102 again out here yesterday, just the environment in which you drip standing still. Spouse saw our pair of barred owls drinking from the small tank in the side pasture around dusk last night, then perching on the top fencerail to sit a spell. Maybe they were scoping out dinner. The third one (their kid?) wasn’t around.

Talked with a landscaper about designing a sprinkler system for our yards yesterday and should have a preliminary layout available on Monday–and price. 🙂 Handy to consult someone born and raised in the county who knows the soils and trees and what our area looked like before large and small subdivisions trickled in. Ours dates from 1972; we moved out here in 1980–just in time for that record hot summer.

#4 TT and #7 mharper42, agree with you both. Mom and reality are not in sync any more, so do not waste time getting upset over what cannot be fixed. Maybe your brother, TT, can break the news to Mom about her brother’s passing and leave you out of it. 🙂
Condolences to the family on his passing. His suffering is over, and he’s in the Lord’s loving hands.

Ms.Mharper, you’re being kind. Trust me, it’s not cognitive, it’s personality. But it’s her problem, not mine. I’m trying to let it go. Perhaps my brother was more insistent than I was, but then – he doesn’t deal with her on a regular basis like I do. And he’s known as the family wisshole, so he gets away with being more obnoxious than I do.

Adee – news is already broken to her, and that’s when she told me she had plans to visit. Thanks for the sympathy, though.

That is one nasty-looking suit (pea-green? yellow? jaundice?) Perry chose to wear to make his big announcement. Hope this doesn’t seem too petty but it really hit me wrong. Or is it possible this photo was just published out-of-true by ABC to make Perry look bad? The “white” stripes behind him also have a yellowish tone.

Here’s my bicycle story. City streets, me in a previous old Toyota pickup I had, heading to work, stuck behind a cyclist. Finally had a chance to pass him in the leftward lane, gunned the truck which promptly (unintentionally) backfired. The guy musta thought he was shot — like that gal with the biscuit dough on the back of her head — because both he and bike fell over onto the adjacent sidewalk. I kept going but really felt bad about the incident.

#25 mharper45, Perry’s suit shows up on my monitor as light tan. I don’t see any greenish or yellowish tint to it in this picture from 8-12-11. Imagine different brands/ages of monitors can project colors differently. The monitor with spouses’s pc is much newer than mine and has much better color quality. Maybe I should check Perry’s suit color on it.

Adee, I hope that’s all it is. I had looked at it on 2 different monitors (one very new) and both were yellowish. But because I was pretty sure that was a ginormous flag behind him, which means the stripes should be white, I had done a mental transform to take the yellow out of the flag which made the jacket a khaki/tan which would be a good choice with a light blue shirt. So I am glad to hear that is what you see.

Keelie was being watched by friends while her parents were out of town and darted out of the front door of their home on the corner of Jerome and Studemont last night (8/6/11). She is a shy, black and brown lab/hound mix. A picture is attached. Please keep an eye out for her. She is shy and will best respond to a calm person kneeling down to her.

    Thu Aug 11, 2011 3:13 pm
Keelie is STILL missing. We have been searching for her nonstop since her disappearance on Saturday (8/6), and thank you to all of you that have done your own searches for this girl. We are organizing two search parties for Saturday (8/13) (one in the morning and one in the evening).

    Fri Aug 12, 2011 9:25 pm
Organized search tomorrow morning & evening
Where: Meet in front of Matt and Sara’s house near Studemont and Jerome.
When: 8am (There we will break off into teams of two, we will have supplies)

    Sat Aug 13, 2011 8:22 am

Keelie update: a lady that had seen the emails & flyers saw her near Reagan Park, not too far from where she had squeezed out the front door and she came right to her. Some people had been looking for her since 6:30 this morning and another group (including me) was about to head out with more flyers when we got the call. They had been searching for her daily! She probably lost a few pounds but looked great overall and seemed very happy to be home!!

Why is it that union goons and the organization its self are never charged under the RICO statutes when they do stuff like this?

LEMONT FURNACE, Pa. — State police in Uniontown said a 29-hour loss of landline phone service was caused by an act of criminal mischief when someone went into locked underground Verizon vaults and shut off the power.

Wished I had those words of advise. Here’s my bicycle story. I was coming home to the ghetto apartments. A drunk was in the road. I honked. Scared the crap outa him and wrecked his bike, fell into a pothole and was drowning. Yes. My twins were 6 at the time and vividly remember. Anyhoo, got out, pulled him outa the pothole. Instead of Lovey, rolling down my window, she opened up the hatchback. The man got into the back of it. Soaking wet. We had a language problem. And what to do with his bicycle?? He held onto it for a block. Called the cops. Waited for 30 minutes for them to show up. Kids were crying almost the whole time. I finally got them to laugh…Why? Why couldn’t I have just had Ms. Harper’s advise? /scrolling back up unless I get side tracked……

Howdy Hamsterousians! Actually saw a monster thundercloud today which probably went somewhere over Hwy 6/Pearland or thereabouts. Didn’t get a drop here in my part of FB county. No water restrictions here that I know of — very rural, and private well.

(CAUTION: RURAL ENTERTAINMENT STORY AHEAD, In two parts)

    Part I

So rural, that I had to perform an exciting wildlife relocation procedure. Instructions: Water your favorite tree/shrub/lawn area so the armadillos will be attracted to and then tear up the nicely manicured lawn looking for whatever the he!! they eat. Find a sturdy plastic storage box about 2 feet long. Make sure the lid will STAY ON. Have some tape ready, just in case. (Blue masking tape is a fashionable choice.) When it’s dark and you hear them digging and crunching in the grass as you are hauling hoses hither and yon, go back and get said sturdy plastic box.

Sneaking up silently and slowly so as not to disturb their evening meal (yet), let ’em work their way around the bushes toward you as you half-crouch in a frozen position, box at the ready (open side down).

When they are within pouncing distance, POUNCE! HOLD ON TO THE BOX! Put your weight on it! It will feel like a runaway bowling ball on steroids rattling around in there! Don’t give up!

Now you have an armadillo in an upside-down box, thumping and jumping and clawing and trying to stick his nose out of the bottom edge as you continue to keep your weight on it. In the dark. With fire ants just waiting for your tender body parts to come within range.

The lid of the box is halfway across the lawn.

Now what?? Well, you ascertain which end of the box the armadillo is in, and move the opposite end of the box ever-so-slightly toward the lid. As Armadillo commences more thumping, jumping and clawing, move the appropriate side of the box toward the lid. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Etc.

Eventually, you reach the lid. Ever so carefully, slide lid under box while Armadillo continues to thump, jump, and claw. This will be made even more exciting because the lid has plastic tabs all around the inside which, of course, catch on the edge of the box as you try to slide it.

When you succeed in this task, you now have an armadillo in a box which is upside-down, the lid sagging under his weight as you try to move it toward the house, where the tape is. Inside. So you scoot the box toward the front porch, still holding your weight on it and re-fastening the lid as needed. Of course, there is continued thumping, jumping, and clawing.

    Part II

Upon reaching front door, you catch your breath, then actually are brave enough to scoot the box INSIDE THE HOUSE so that you can reach the tape. On the table. In the light. 😀 Fortunately, Armadillo has now resigned himself to his fate (or just got tuckered out, or he thinks it’s daylight so he should be sleeping) and has settled down a bit.

You retrieve the tape from the table, meanwhile keeping an eye on Armadillo in case he gets rambunctious, and attempt to wrap sticky tape around an upside-down box with a sharp-clawed bowling ball in it. When you have a few wraps of tape on both ends, you sit back and catch your breath. Then you turn the box upside down — slowly so Armadillo is not stressed and begins to thump, jump and claw — and release a shower of Texas dirt which was caught in the lid of the box onto your clean tile floor. Oh, joy.

You contemplate your next move. The cold adult beverage in the fridge calls. You answer.

You bring forth broom and dustpan and sweep up dirt.

It is time for Armadillo to be moved to his/her new location. You go out to your vehicle and move all the junk — er, useful stuff — around so that there is room in the back seat for the box. With loving care you bring Armadillo to his ride. Seatbelt won’t be necessary as public roads will not be used.

Half a mile down the dirt road near a water trough you stop and rip off all that tape you oh-so-carefully put on the box. You bring the box to the fence and anxiously open the lid, ready to spring back. You tip the box (away from you, dummy) and allow Armadillo to slide out, landing gently on his feet.

As Armadillo trundles off into the moonlight, you wish him well and hope he NEVER SETS FOOT IN YOUR YARD AGAIN!!

    – # –

Hope this has cheered you up!

(retreats back into LurkCave, eyeing spider web for eventual removal via broom when it’s NOT dark. Shhh — what’s that crunching noise??)

LGW – I can recommend an easier way to deal with the armadillo relocation program (no it does not involve a .22 caliber weapon). Turn box right side up and place lid against the side of the box. Approach armadillo from the rear, pick him up, place him in the box, put lid on box, fasten securely, then proceed with the rest of your plan. You might consider wearing gloves since they are rumored to carry leperacy, but they are deaf, so no problem catching them.

    very rural, and private well.

Private well water is one of the least long-term-reliable ways to get your water. Gubmint can decide at any time that subsidence is a problem in the area, and mandate sealing up all private wells after you switch to municipal water supply.

Loved the story about relocating the ‘dillo. Just wondering, why didn’t you have all the tape and stuff ready? It would have been a real mess if the critter had got loose inside your house. Still, a bold and manly plan!

Howdy Hamsterousians! Well, after all that excitement, looks like the yard will survive. Big patch of scruffed up roots and dirt about the size of a 2-foot box (imagine that!) after the battle. And lots of fresh holes, probably from Armadillo’s associates who still prowl the area. Don’t worry, they’ll be relocated too. 👿

I am not trying to maintain a “golf course lawn”. I just try to save the concrete slab foundation first, as the door does not open when the ground dries out, and then the little bitty trees and shrubs (3) when it’s really bad and they are wilting. Concern about the groundwater table is always present.

Found an interesting bit about water technology. Linkie is cde.cerosmedia.com/1O4e086377b4ab3259.cde with the http:// before it so as not to offend any of the copyright gods.

Good afternoon Hamsters. Thoroughly hot and miserable this afternoon with nothing but fluffy clouds here and there that only give some shade as they drift by. Weather forecasters’ hints of increased chances of seabreeze rains like yesterday’s–only better they emphasize–seem, ahem, premature. Nothing really promising in view right now, though there is some overcast moving in. Counting chickens and all that is also premature.

LGW #83-84 Love your tale of armadillo humane removal. Our numerous armadillo hunts through the yard and flowerbeds over the years let us sympathize. They can run pretty fast even if they can’t see very well, as in one repeatedly bonking its head on the bottom fencerail trying to squeeze under it when spouse chased it across the yard toward the pasture. It eventually figured out it had to lower its head, and then it got under and escaped for one night anyway. It or somebody else came back the next night. Sigh

Bless them, they were behind 5 doors when the Lord handed out brains.

The fuel is the small change part of it.

    Marina Fees
Dry Dock at least once every 24 months
    Insurance
Complete change out of Nav Aids & Electronics every 5 years.

At least one (better two) permanent crewmen. The helm must be manned 27/7 on
a crossing to the Caymens or to Belieze; plus there is always those nagging “paint this”,
“patch this”, and daily freshwater washdowns.

Liquor, Beer, Food, and Bait (gotta keep the priorities straight)

If I win the Lotto or some previously unknown benefactor remembers me in their will; then I will down at the broker’s shop bright and early in the morning ordering my boat.
Talk nice to me and I might invite your for an overnight cruise to Corpus Christi. It would have to be for free since I could not take passengers for hire; I don’t have a Master’s(OUPV) license.

Just getting started on my day – trying to (still) do some catching up in a vain attempt to make my cpa’s bookkeeper happy. On the way down to Sweeny yesterday to help with the make-ready on our unit, I actually went through A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM! It didn’t last long, but it was enough to make a few people pull over on the side of the road. I have some of those old-folks amber glasses, and I put those on and could see just find, so I kept going. Slowly, but going. Only one place where I felt a slight hydroplane. About 6:30 we called it quits and got in the boat, which is Hubby’s therapy. He drove it up and down the river for a while, then we hitched it up and went to eat at a seafood place we like in West Columbia, then took it all home. Long day, but productive, and it got me out from behind this computer before my butt took root in the chair.

This morning, our deacon made a fool out of himself. We have a priest here for about a month, while the diocese decides where to send him. (We have extra sleeping space in the building which used to the be convent.) Our deacon, who is NOT well loved nor respected, tried to introduce him as Nigerian, then looked over at the rather slender, elegant looking man who was pursing his lips behind his prayer-positioned hands, shaking his head and saying “No, I am not Nigerian.” The deacon laughed it off and proceeded with the mass. He gave the homily today, and I don’t know if he was showing off for the new priest or what, but he started interjecting his politics into the homily. I got a little upset when he tried to blame the riots in London on “people who have not been listened to for years, and who are suffering from this economy”. Then he proceeded to lecture us about how we want to hold on to things which are not even ours, working in the debt ceiling debate as “people saying ‘This is mine! You can’t have it!’ and the other side saying ‘No! This is mine, and you can’t have it!’ ”

It was at that point that I quit mouthing my “no” and “you’re an idiot” comments and shaking my head. I just picked up the bulletin and began reading it instead of listening to the imbecile, now ridiculously and over-theatrically posturing himself before the altar, portraying himself as the Canaanite woman begging for scraps from the table. (Did I mention that we sit in the second pew from the front, right in plain sight?)

He should have sold tickets. It would have been a good fundraiser for the church.

Man, what a day, we had a great time, we went out to Redfish, (first time I’ve been there since it was rebuilt) and the bay was smooth as glass, not unusal for August in Texas, BUTT very unusal for this year, it’s been windier than I ever remember. There were only three other boats there and one was the Greatgrandson of simples, a 240 Sea Ray Sundancer. It was neat, had AC an Onan, running water with fresh/grey water tanks, just like home. We left there and went up Clear Creek and skied/wake boarded, The Boy’s Bride and Daughter Hubby were real hits, she was just learning to wake board and did good and Daughter’s Hubby is really good. They also liked the way my Bride popped up like a cork on my Ancient Slalom. I did good, if I do say so myself, I can still drag my elbows in the turns but I get Tarred real fast, doubt that I could make 4 bouys on the Slalom Course,…..35′ off, Fugeddabout it. 😉 We rolled in about 5 and washed down the boat and after the young-uns left I hit the shower, just got out and found the wife asleep on the couch. Yessir Life is GOOD! 😀

We got an inch and a half out here in deep Waller county according to my neighbor who pays attention to those things. If it does that everyday for the next month it might do some good.

The armadillo may be cute, blind and stupid but it is also a pest. Living out in the country like I do, I get annoyed when people live trap their problems and then relocate them out here. I don’t know how many of these relocated creatures I have had to deal with but I am tired of it. This includes the cute little kitties and puppies that city folk have decided to release into the wild. The coyotes kill them, they are hit by vehicles, they chase my critters and I deal with them.
Take some responsibility folks, if it’s a problem for you, it will be a problem for me.

I would rather have the Sea Ray 670. I think you would have a better chance of breaking even on a charter service with it. Not too many clients could handle the kind of money it would take to charter Tiger’s boat.

It is all a dream anyway, but if one is going to daydream about an affair with a good looking woman; it might as well be Sophia Loren.

Regarding your #146. I don’t expect the President or any of our Representatives to stay locked up, unless they have been indicted for something felonius. Still, you would think that these saps would realize that leadership is by example and appearences are important. Oh well…the peasents are revolting!

When I got back from boating I smelled like a combo of cheap sun screen, salt water and sweat,…

I say the next Hamous get together should be on Superdave’s boat.

Is it French to be furry?

On the legs and in the armpits. Hopefully nowhere else. 😯

Well, I guess toe knuckles would be OK.

Or would it be just toes? The hair doesn’t actuallly grow on the “knuckles”.

Ministers are drawing up controversial plans to remove benefits from those convicted of taking part in the riots that engulfed England last week, in a move Liberal Democrats and independent experts have condemned as counter-productive and overly expensive.

So the sane ones in England are saying “stop paying for bad behavior” and the Liberal Demoncrats (but I repeat myself) are saying that it won’t work and will cost more; isn’t the same thing happening here?

Should this be the o/c topic for the day?

Planking, then Owling, then Coning (I missed that one and have no idea what it is) now Horsemaning:

“Horsemaning,” or fake beheading, involves posing two people so that they appear to be a single body with a detached head — and is a revival of a photography fad popular in the 1920s.

Check out some of the lame-azzed photo examples. This new facebook fad is sweeping the world. . . . . . .DILLIGAS?

Is it possible that cheap Chinese crap is going to get more expensive as more and more people protest poor working conditions, pay and pollution in China?
