If you were to think of a US (or any other nation, for that matter) warplane with a reputation for toughness, one would leap readily to mind.
Note the Bombardier’s chair just above the chin turret.
Most of the other crews in the formation thought “Hang The Expense Again III” was lost over France. Somehow the pilot managed to bring her back home. The tail gunner was lost, but survived.

I need to confirm this but I believe it was the B-17 bomber my grandfather flew on during WWII. He was the rear left gunner so basically his job was to shoot down Nazi fighters before Nazi fighters shot his plane down. Grandpa flew his quota of over 30 missions and then was sent home.

Joe Straus caused the Challenger disaster!Yah.
I kind of expected today’s OC post was going to be a missive providing us with all of the evidence to support the claim that opposition to Joe Straus is being orchestrated by a cabal of anti-semitic Christian Fundamentalists bent on taking over the Texas Legislature in order to impose the Christian version of Sharia Law across the Texas plains.
That claim was made last night, but no offer of proof was given when challenged, so I’m guessing you’re going with something easier to prove.

Grandpa flew his quota of over 30 missions and then was sent home.If he flew in Europe, there’s actually a better chance that he flew B24s. They had the same gunner positions that the B17 had and many more of them were produced than the B17. If he flew out of North Africa or in the Pacific, its almost a lead pipe cinch that he flew B24s. It had a longer range than the B17 and the distances between bases and targets across the Mediterrainian and Pacific pretty much disqualified use of the B17.
The B17 has better “PR” than the B24. It was popularized before the war and entered service a bit earlier. There were a number of publicity flights and events done with the B17 by an Air Force that was desperately trying to keep its government funding for new aircraft.

I guess I should mention that the B25s used in Europe also had waist gunner positions similar to the B17 and B24, even though it was a much smaller airplane having two engines as opposed to the four of the larger aircraft.

Jim DeMint
A bold move for a freshman but, like DeMint, he’s perfectly positioned to make it. He comes from the deepest of deep red states and there’s no room whatsoever to run to his right. He’ll hold his seat for 50 years if he wants to, so any establishment Republicans who are bitter about this will have to content themselves with cold shoulders. They’ll never bounce him in a primary in Utah.

Man-O-Man, y’all had a real case of diharreah of the mouth/fingers yesterday. Good grief, I could not even read all of them to get caught up. Does this accurately summarize:
1) Joe Strauss and Sarge are really lovers and neither wants to “come out” so Sarge is telling everyone he’s a butt-head :>)
/major sarc
2) The Jack-inos (jack-azz rinos) in DC screwed us again while they bent themselves over the coffee table for the Ds, LSM and the DC cocktail party circuit.
3) We, as taxpaying schlubbs, will be enslaved forever to pay for the wimpy-ness and stooooooooooopidity of the Jack-inos; and we will likely default in short order (as soon as our bond interest rates start getting over 15%), the sky will soon fall, chickens will stop laying eggs and we will all have to eat VSR sammiches for the rest of our lives.Have I left anything out?

What has been proven is that a person doesn’t like Joe Straus because he’s Jewish.
There are people who don’t like Barack Obama because he’s black.
So what, exactly, is your point?

I’ve mentioned before that my B-17 buddy was thankful he finished his hitch in the 17 because it would fly even if completely shot up. The 24 was full of hydraulics that made it much more vulnerable to a single shot.

Absolutely. But that sturdiness resulted in the 17 being more labor intensive to produce, which is why there were more 24’s in the air over Europe.
It also explains where there are so few airworthy B24’s extant today.

The 24 was full of hydraulics
And they leaked like a sieve……….The line crews commented that the way you checked the hydraulic level was to look under the airplane. If there wasn’t any fluid on the ground, there wasn’t any in the plane.

That “Christian Solution” website you posted has some opinions stated that I personally find repulsive. But the guy has a point that there are forces in the world today that are clearly out to denigrate and destroy Christianity. I don’t know if he is right or wrong that specifically Jewish interests are involved. It’s hard to identify someone else’s motive for their actions. As an atheist myself, I don’t have a dog in the hunt religion-wise, I am only looking at the results of people’s actions. This includes politicians, media, news & entertainment, as well as just plain citizens.

I find the whole “Accuse them of being racists.” tactic (of which this just a variant) without any actual proof to be nearly as despicable as the racism itself.
I find that we’ve become attuned to it when Democrats and Liberals (but I repeat myself) use the tactic to protect Obama, along with calling Tea Party moms names like “screeching harridans”, but we are less so when Establishment Republicans use the same tactic.
We should not accept it in either case, and should condemn it in both.

Most of the other crews in the formation thought “Hang The Expense Again III” was lost over France. Somehow the pilot managed to bring her back home. The tail gunner was lost, but survived.
It would be interesting to hear the story of the tail gunner and how he survived. The sentence below is the only info I could turn up (posted many places).

There is one story, recounted n a book by Martin Caidin, of a B17 that had its tail blown off. The tail gunner landed safely on the ground inside of it. There was enough lift given by the empennage that it was a relatively soft landing.

We hate it when Democrats do it, we should hate it equally as much when Republicans do—and treat them the same way we do the Democrats who do.

I doubt if that was Urich, since there was at least one brief reference I turned up that mentions a parachute…Hang the Expense III 351st BS,100th BG Hit by flak over Frankfurt, the blast blew the tail gunner,Roy Urich, out of the plane. The rest of the crew learned later that Urich survived unhurt.
As you probably know, the TG in the 100BG aircraft was assumed to have been KIA, yet turned out to have parachuted, injured and was found to be a PoW.
Photo of the crew, including Urich, who was listed as POW.

I have no particular love for Joe Straus – or most of the other establishment Republicans, including D_n P_tr_ck. I think he did a poor job as Speaker this last session, and I doubt seriously that I would ever vote for him (if I had the chance). He is however only one among many who deserve criticism. To focus solely on him is to give a pass to others who are equally at fault.
Sarge’s single minded obsession with him is alternately excruciatingly funny, excessively annoying, or just predictably boring. (the funny part is wearing thin, fast.) A little good natured taunting might help him to learn a bit of moderation.

Three years ago these guys were saying that if we wanted change, we were supposed to get active in the Republican Party.
Silly us, we thought they were saying “We appreciate your input, welcome your participation, and will work hard to make the changes you seek.”
Instead we find out that what they were really saying was “Shut up and do what we tell you to do, say what we tell you to say, and if you don’t, we will make your life a living Hell.”

#69 – Cool! But hey Gracie is waterproof so parkin her outside is aok
Coleman makes an even easier to set up tent – amateurs do it in 2 minutes
There’s a smaller version I own – sets up in 60 seconds EASY
But my camping days are long since behind me – today “camping” = “no room service”!!

I don’t understand the “Party Time” pic on Drudge right now. Obammy is celebrating his birthday one day early to raise campaign $ in Chicago. But why the pic showing Michelle in that chenille bedspread dress she wore to the Inauguration Ball?

That doesn’t preclude his riding in a Flying Fortress it just means that the math makes it about 60/40 that he was in B24s. In fact, his flying out of England probably bumps the odds up a bit. There were about 18,000 B24’s produced and about 12,500 B17s. A good number of the B24s went to the Pacific and Mediterranean theaters because of their longer range and higher payload.

Good afternoon Hamsters.
History update: The Challenger disaster caused Joe Straus. The Columbia disaster just made him worse. 🙂
We return to the intermittently scheduled comments. Good news at the cardiologist’s office this morning. My atrial fibrillation continues to be minor and well under control with minimal meds. Next appointment in one year, as usual. Thank you, Lord. The condition runs in Mom’s family.
Love Tim Conway. Mrs. Wiggins has to be somewhere around. 🙂

Carol Burnett had some of the best comedy ever. “I Love Lucy” will also be remembered for year and years. They had class. Their comedy was clean and based on the foibles of human nature. I will always remember Harvey Korman and Tim Conway trying so hard not to bust up laughing during the skits – and all that accomplished was make us laugh harder!
God bless their hearts, and for those that are entertaining the angels now, God rest their souls.

I’ve remembered this episode for 36 years!
The Mary Tyler Moore Show: The Happy Homemaker Takes Lou Home
“Happy Homemaker” Sue Ann Nivens (Betty White) has decided that Lou Grant (Ed Asner) is the man for her. With the reluctant assistance of Mary Richards (Mary Tyler Moore), slinky spider Sue Ann lures feckless fly Lou into her seductive web. Once seen, Sue Ann’s gadget-laden “bachelorette” apartment can never be forgotten. “The Happy Homemaker Takes Lou Home” made its first network appearance on December 6, 1975. -

Speaking of all these old TV shows – I’m really enjoying watching MeTV, channel 57.5 here in Houston. The Kube, channel 57.1, also runs old shows. My husband got to watch Mary Tyler Moore for the first time this week.

The day after Netanyahu hints that he may consider 1967 lines as a basis for negotiation, this happens.
Palestinian Grad rocket explodes near Kiryat Gat
The attack represents an escalation in the firing of longer-range rockets. The last time such rockets were fired at Israel was in March, when a number of projectiles landed in the Ashdod and Lachish area, and schools in the area were closed. Also Wednesday night, a Grad rocket fell near Ashkelon. Police said the rocket landed within Ashkelon city boundaries and damaged a road. A police response team was on the scene.
snip
A police response team drove out to the scene of the attack to recover and analyze the projectile. Hours later, the Air Force bombed a number of targets in Gaza in response.I continue to marvel at the patience and long suffering of the Israelis in the face of such constant harassment and acts of war. I think it is long past time to send all the palestenians to allah. How many times do they have to prove that they do not want peace but to kill Israelis?

US debt shot up $238 billion to reach 100 percent of gross domestic project after the government’s debt ceiling was lifted, Treasury figures showed Wednesday.
Treasury borrowing jumped Tuesday, the data showed, immediately after President Barack Obama signed into law an increase in the debt ceiling as the country’s spending commitments reached a breaking point and it threatened to default on its debt.
The new borrowing took total public debt to $14.58 trillion, over end-2010 GDP of $14.53 trillion, and putting it in a league with highly indebted countries like Italy and Belgium.
Whoahoo, let’s double that!

He says he refused to answer questions because of concern about confidentiality, and the agents handcuffed and blindfolded him, kicked him in the back and threatened to shoot him if he tried to escape. Both sides say he was then transferred to an unidentified location for three days before being flown to Camp Cropper.
For his first three months at Camp Cropper he says he was held incommunicado in solitary confinement with a hole in the ground for a toilet, only rarely allowed short trips outside in the middle of the night. He says he was then moved to cells holding terrorist suspects hostile to the United States who were told about his work for the military, leading to physical attacks by his cellmates that left him in constant fear for his life.
His lawsuit claims guards tortured him by repeatedly choking him, exposing him to extreme cold and continuous artificial light, blindfolding and hooding him, waking him by banging on a door or slamming a window when he tried to sleep and blasting heavy metal or country music into his cell at “intolerably loud volumes.”
Sounds like towards the end the accuser had a part of a time.

This morning I did not play Rubio’s 10-minute speech but I listened to it tonight. One sentence hit me wrong so I found a transcript to be sure I had it right. I can’t quite understand why he wanted to include it (bolded below).
And the division on how to solve it goes to the root of the dispute that we face in America between two very different visions of America’s future. By the way, one not more or less patriotic than the other. Patriotic, country-loving Americans can disagree on their future vision of what kind of country we should be. But this division, this difference of opinion, is the reason why even though this bill passed, this debate we just had is going to move forward for some time to come.
http://rubio.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?ID=4e610996-1f8f-43c8-becb-c1f09012f47d
While I was looking for the transcript, I came across this opinion piece with which I completely agree.
Other than the part where he says “No party less patriotic than the other” he’s dead on. The fact is you can’t be an American and believe SOCIALISM is the way forward. You can’t be a Communist and believe that’s the way forward. It is not possible to believe Government is best part of America and be a part of “Patriotic America” it’s not possible.

While I was looking for the transcript, I came across this opinion piece with which I completely agree.Other than the part where he says “No party less patriotic than the other” he’s dead on. The fact is you can’t be an American and believe SOCIALISM is the way forward. You can’t be a Communist and believe that’s the way forward. It is not possible to believe Government is best part of America and be a part of “Patriotic America” it’s not possible.

At long lasty, the Muslim/Mormon connection:
“At 48%, Muslim Americans are by far the most likely of major faith groups surveyed to say they have personally experienced racial or religious discrimination in the past year,” the report said. “The next most likely are Mormon Americans, although less than one-third of U.S. Mormons say this.”
Whoohoo, goooooooooo persecution!
Unlike Muslims though, Mormons also adhire to a seek and destroy mentality.
So, Which Religious Group Is Most Optimistic About the Future? The Answer May Surprise You
