I remember watching a shuttle nightime landing when we lived in Tomball, so it would have been in 1999. An incredible sight, a red streak completely across the sky. From horizon to horizon in about 20 minutes IIRC.

I probably saw the same one. We were returning from a late night water main repair. We pulled into the nursing home parking lot on the North side of Bellville, got out of the truck, waited about three minutes and right on time it streaked silently across the sky. A heart stopping witness to a 17,000mph fireball trailed by a huge, steamy contrail. It seemed you could reach out and touch it. Then BOOM!!!!!!

Good morning Hamsters. Only made it to 98 in our back yard yesterday with humidity in the low 30s, but on the road to Richmond it was 100 on the car thermometer. Ugh. Started at 75 today at 6 and stuffy rather than mugly. Not a good omen.
Last evening we had a hawk, a piliated woodpecker ( Wood Woodpecker type), and a young squirrel doing a kabuki dance around the small tank in the side pasture. Squirrel was perched on the side getting a drink. Woody flew down from the fence rail to the tank, and Squirrel leaped up to the fence rail, eyeing Woody. He finished drinking and flew back to the fence rail as Squirrel jumped down to the tank again. Woody on the fence and Squirrel at the tank left when Hawk approached to drink, but Squirrel went to his fence rail and watched. Hawk drank and left, and Squirrel remained for a time facing the tank as if guarding it. Got the impression Squirrel thinks he owns the tank.
As for the vote yesterday on the spending ceiling, I applaud the Republican no votes, especially Ron Paul and Ted Poe in our area. They all have titanium spines. As for those who voted yes, they have lots of ‘splainin’ to do and better hop to it today. Senators Hutchison and Cornyn will sadly likely have ‘splainin’ to do today as well. The ‘splainin’ better be good.
Kevin Brady called in to KSEV early this morning and gave his explanation. Good for him for not hiding. Waiting for the rest of the area Reps to explain as well.

The noisy cavity excavation work attracted starlings that were trying to take over the nest site, and they finally succeeded.

They did make a huge step in at least changing the conversation from “We gotta raise taxes and not cut spending, except for teensy symbolic cuts we were gonna make anyway” to “The problem is spending; taxes are high enough, if not too high.” Is is exceedingly difficult to make great changes in direction or pass major legislation when you hold only one house in Congress and not the Presidency.

I am an early riser (4-4:30AM) and I take my coffee out on the patio for my morning meditation, just me, 3 yard cats and the infinity of space. Makes one feel pretty humble and gives a good start to the day.
You would be surprised at how much space junk makes a fiery re-entry to the atmosphere. At least every two weeks a piece will go burning across the sky, about the visual size of a dime and leave a glowing trail behind it several hundred miles long. Pretty awesome sight.

mharper42 and Shannon, These Woodys are fun to watch. A few years ago we had three pairs sitting on a fence rail, proud as could be. I think they mate for life. A little later they were pecking for carpenter bee larvae laid in holes in the underside and sides of the rails. So there they were hanging upside down by their not so tiny feet gripping the top of the rail and going at it. The holes they enlarged were impressive. They hit paydirt.
They are loud, and I wondered what keeps them from getting massive headaches. Saw a piece in a bird book explaining they have a built-in shock absorber behind their beaks that takes the concussion. Guess that’s why they can peck for a long time and not fall exhausted off the tree trunk.
The one last night spent quite a while pecking in the live oak next to our garden room before he went over to the water tank. Did not see a mate around. The are quite elegant.

Today’s shining example of “No Good Deed Goes Unpunished” comes from Fredericksburg, VA, where a young girl prevented the family cat from pouncing on a lost baby woodpecker and her mom ended up with a $535 ticket (and faces the possibility of jail time) for violating the Federal Migratory Bird Act.
Despite the fact that 11-year-old Skylar Capo actually saved the tiny lost woodpecker from a violent death, and then successfully released the bird back into the wild, a Virginia State Trooper was still dispatched to the Capo home where Skylar’s mom was slapped with the $535 ticket.

This wasn’t a question of getting more or strategy for me. It was a question of right or wrong. The right thing to do would have been to not raise the debt ceiling. Period. End of discussion. I’m speaking in the past tense here because it’s pretty well a done deal that this abomination will pass the Senate later today. You’re welcome to your opinions. I have my own, and I have no inclination to support anyone, R or D, who does the wrong thing for political or strategic reasons.

What really would have happened is that current Treasury bonds, SS, Medicare, Medicaid, critical Defense spending and just a tiny bit more would have been paid and pretty much the entire rest of the Federal Government would have been defunded.
Massive chaos would also have ensued.
The Republicans would have gotten the blame for it (mostly rightly) and would likely never see any chance to move their agenda forward again. Ever.

My prime gripe was the complicated scenario for retrieving voice mail, which I don’t often do; in between events I forget the dance steps necessary, which produces frustration. Also the button for picture taking was inconveniently located on the side where it is sooo easy to take a picture of your feet by accident. There were likely many pictures of my feet in the memory. Adding names to the directory was also a chore only spouse could fathom. The owners manual was long, not very clear, and written by someone whose first language is not normal English (maybe techie someting). 🙁
So we looked at the phone store and test drove several brands, read the literature, played with the likely ones a bit more, and decided on the iPhone 3. We don’t need a postcard -sized computer for a phone. The easy cheat-sheet insert is rather vague, and the salesman warned about that. Spouse downloaded part of the owners manual and learned how to run the phone, e-mail, and internet connection stuff. He’s coaching me, and I think I have the calling part under control. I picked up oldest Son from the airport today. His grandparents wanted to keep him (awwwww) but he really missed his home (awwww). He had lots of fun with Grandma and Grandpa. They went shooting, cave exploring, and laughed when they heard the line in Captain America of something like, “no Captain America, you’re going to Alamogordo”, because that’s the town where they all saw the movie. I just sent both my boys to time out because Youngest Son kept hitting Oldest Son’s friend and oldest Son smacked Youngest Son in the eye with a large bouncy ball. Things are definitely back to normal here.
On a more serious note, oldest son’s grandpa couldn’t participate in some activites because he’s been having recent heart and breathing problems. Mother-In-Law says his complexion has turned pail. He needs to be on oxygen at night. It almost sounds like he needs a pace maker as well. I hope and pray he’ll turn out OK. We like having him around.

The federal government is now trying to classify all rural farm and ranch vehicles and trailers as commercial requiring drivers to have the same licensing, compliance and insurance as full-time 18 wheeler operators.
“It’s a huge deal for us,” said John Youngberg of the Montana Farm Bureau. After years of allowing state governments to waive commercial driver’s license requirements for farmers hauling crops or driving farm equipment on public roads, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is poised to do away with the exceptions.
Regulators are suggesting that all wheat shipments be considered interstate, even when farmers making short hauls to local grain elevators aren’t crossing state lines. The change would make commercial driver’s licenses — and all the log books and medical requirements that go with them — a necessity for farmers. Some might not qualify.
The licenses would also be required of farmers driving farm equipment down public roads. Farmers hauling grain for a neighbor or landlord would be considered commercial drivers hauling for someone else.
Ranchers hauling livestock in trailers as small as 16 feet would also be subject to the new rules.

After years of allowing state governments to waive commercial driver’s license requirements for farmers hauling crops or driving farm equipment on public roads, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is poised to do away with the exceptions.
Regulators are suggesting that all wheat shipments be considered interstate, even when farmers making short hauls to local grain elevators aren’t crossing state lines. The change would make commercial driver’s licenses — and all the log books and medical requirements that go with them — a necessity for farmers. Some might not qualify.
The licenses would also be required of farmers driving farm equipment down public roads. Farmers hauling grain for a neighbor or landlord would be considered commercial drivers hauling for someone else.

He’ll hold his seat for 50 years if he wants to, so any establishment Republicans who are bitter about this will have to content themselves with cold shoulders. They’ll never bounce him in a primary in Utah.
Hehehehe, ain’t that the truth? This is, of course, talking about my man, Mike Lee. Lee wants to form a new PAC and perhaps use it to primary Republican incumbants. Lee says:
“The purpose of it is to help find and support candidates for federal office who share my view that federal government has become too big and too expensive and believe in the need to restore what I refer to as constitutional-limited government,” Lee told The Hill…
“It would be hypocritical of me if I were to say never, ever under any circumstances would I try to support someone trying to come here the same way I came here,” Lee said.
He added, however, he does not have his mind set on supporting any particular challenger against a particular incumbent right now.
Question: Would he consider supporting Jason Chaffetz’s primary challenge to Orrin Hatch? The idea of an incumbent senator campaigning against his colleague from the same party and the same state is almost unthinkable, but Lee and Chaffetz are both young tea-party favorites from Utah and Lee famously won his seat by ousting a longtime incumbent who was considered too centrist in the primary. If he backed Chaffetz, it’d be a signal to those same primary voters that it’s time for another old blood/new blood transfusion. It’d also give Utah, hands down, the most conservative state caucus in the U.S. Senate.
Yup, yup, yup. Utah’s the place to do it too.
but Hatch also has support among influential Republicans that Bob Bennett lacked. Just tonight, in fact, his campaign sent out an e-mail announcing that Sean Hannity has endorsed him. And since this next term will probably be Hatch’s last (he’s 77 now) and Chaffetz is in his mid-40s, Lee may figure that there’s no sense provoking an ugly fight now when Chaffetz is in line for the seat later.
But if I read Lee correctly, I’d say Lee’d have no problem endorsing Chaffetz over Hatch. Orin Hatch is owed nothing by Republicans.

Anywho, I’d get real cream of coconut and pineapple juice (not the cheap mix crap) and put the Bacardi Rum with the blender carafe in the freezer for a while and then shave the ice in the blender, add the coconut, pineapple juice and rum. Yum Yum. It would make two of the tall Commodore Crowley glasses with just enough left over for the bar-tender. 😀

She told me that she made frozen margarita’s in a 30 gal trash can, mixed with a canoe paddle. They kept it a walk in cooler until they put it in the slurpee machine. Yes, I know that there is NO SUCH thang as a frozen margarita, it would be a margarita flavored slurpee.
