Weekend Debt Drama Open Comments

Now that the Senate is going to be debating legislation to raise the debt limit, the risk of a government shutdown is lower, but not zero.
The econobabe, Megan McArdle, speculated a bit on exactly what a government shutdown might entail. It’s pretty thought-provoking. We all have things in mind that should be cut; unfortunately, my list is not the same as most other people’s. In fact, there will be many whose list of things to cut is the same as my list of things to keep.
Cutting is easy in the abstract, but less so in the specific.

We currently borrow about 40% of the budget. That corresponds to the non-green segments in the diagram above. What would be the impact of that?

  • You just cut the IRS and all the accountants at Treasury, which means that the actual revenue you have to spend is $0.
  • The nation’s nuclear arsenal is no longer being watched or maintained
  • The doors of federal prisons have been thrown open, because none of the guards will work without being paid, and the vendors will not deliver food, medical supplies, electricity, etc.
  • The border control stations are entirely unmanned, so anyone who can buy a plane ticket, or stroll across the Mexican border, is entering the country.  All the illegal immigrants currently in detention are released, since we don’t have the money to put them on a plane, and we cannot actually simply leave them in a cell without electricity, sanitation, or food to see what happens.
  • All of our troops stationed abroad quickly run out of electricity or fuel.  Many of them are sitting in a desert with billions worth of equipment, and no way to get themselves or their equipment back to the US.
  • Our embassies are no longer operating, which will make things difficult for foreign travellers
  • No federal emergency assistance, or help fighting things like wildfires or floods. Sorry, tornado people!  Sorry, wildfire victims!  Try to live in the northeast next time!
  • Housing projects shut down, and Section 8 vouchers are not paid. Families hit the streets.
  • The money your local school district was expecting at the October 1 commencement of the 2012 fiscal year does not materialize, making it unclear who’s going to be teaching your kids without a special property tax assessment.
  • The market for guaranteed student loans plunges into chaos. Hope your kid wasn’t going to college this year!
  • The mortgage market evaporates. Hope you didn’t need to buy or sell a house!
  • The FDIC and the PBGC suddenly don’t have a government backstop for their funds, which has all sorts of interesting implications for your bank account.
  • The TSA shuts down. Yay! But don’t worry about terrorist attacks, you TSA-lovers, because air traffic control shut down too.  Hope you don’t have a vacation planned in August, much less any work travel.
  • Unemployment money is no longer going to the states, which means that pretty soon, it won’t be going to the unemployed people.

Some are pretty easy, others less so. Many are things the Federal government shouldn’t be doing in the first place. Cutting them out of the Federal budget suddenly with no preparation would result in chaos. Heck, cutting them out of the Federal budget over time would likely result in chaos, just a little less so.

Collectively, there us no easy solution for cutting government. That’s probably a significant reason politicians promise more and do not promise to cut.

I would love to cut the Department of Education, returning that power to the states. The EPA can go as well. I’ll even settle for a significant cut into that without elimination. I’m OK with military cuts and to even reduce benefits for future enlistees. Yup, that’ll cut down the recruitment but if that results in restructuring the forces, I see that as needed as well.

It’s late so I’ll look at the list more closely later. I’m glad wagon included a summary of things that’ll be cut if borrowing ceased. That can make for some good debate and / or discussion.

I keep hearing those claims, I wonder if they account for things such as new people coming into SS and Medicare, and does that blow up the projections? Of course we lose people too, but I’m sure the additions far outway the subtractions.

ok then. Freeze spending and reduce by 2%.

    or 5%

whatever it takes. Companies make these kinds of cuts all the time and the government is way more inefficient, so it should be much easier to find stuff to cut.

I agree totally. What I was wondering was, when a new person comes into the system, (new payment) has that already been projected, and if not, how would the freeze or cut go into play, the average for all goes down?

Good morning Hamsters. Rain, we got rain last night, a whole 2/10 inches! Not complaining about being awakened by thunder in the middle of the night; be it the Lord’s kettle drums, angels bowling, or Thor’s hammer–we’ll take all descriptions.

The Chron strikes again. Yesterday the picture and story of the would-be Fort Hood attacker was above the fold in bold headlline on the front page. Today the follow-up is a single column on p. B3 of the second section, topped by a wimpy headline. Ya don’t suppose that Nasser Abdo, the Druid perp, having admitted his intentions, caught with the explosive goods, and behaving in an insolent manner before the judge had anything to do with the story placement, do ya? Why, that might prejudice a potential jury to have it blasted on the front page. Twits run the wreckage that is the Chron. But we knew that.

Handsome woke me up this morning to tell me his car wasn’t starting. I had to jump up and abbreviate my morning wake-up routine to take him to work. I think Hubby has fixed his car, so now all I have to worry about is picking him up at 3:00. After Handsome and I got into my car, I turned my phone on and heard a beep telling me I had a message. Handsome Son looked at it for me and said “3:00 in the morning! Who’s calling you at three a.m.?” “I’ll bet it’s (office help’s name) – what does it say?” “It says ‘He’s here!’ ”

After all my stories about my long, difficult labors, I guess it had to rub off on Office Help. I estimate she was in labor between 20 and 24 hours. I guess she’s going to miss her granny’s funeral after all. Now that Hubby has released my wheels back to me, I’m hoping to sneak in a visit before I see my mother and then pick up Handsome. Then this afternoon I may make a run to see our tenants at our river property in Sweeny to see what condition the recently vacated unit is in.

    Busy, busy day.

This Nasser Abdo needs to be tried in a ***military court*** for desertion and treason as well as the terrorist attack he was planning. The FBI has announced: “If convicted, Abdo faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a maximum $250,000 fine.” Forget the fine — where is a 21-year-old loser going to get $250K! — but let’s keep this guy locked up till he dies.

This loser was the son of a drug addict and a Muslim foreigner. His father spent 5 years in a US prison for attempted pedophilia (by Western standards) and was deported to Jordan.

I’d start with a five year moratorium on corporate income taxes and permanent elimination of capital gains taxes….for starters.

We’re in a situation that nebulous generalities will not get us out of.

Freeze spending at current levels and cut 1% overall per year over the next six years. That sounds pretty specific to me.

On the other hand, I’m not sure I could ever take seriously anyone with a name like Cornelius Harvey McGillicuddy IV 😉

I’m tired of listening to drought coverage almost as much as this manufactured “debt crisis”. It does absolutely no good to talk about how we’re 17″ behind in rain. If we got 40″ tomorrow and not another drop the rest of the year we would be “caught up” mathematically but we’d still be in a drought. We can’t go back and make it rain in June. You can’t catch up on past rainfall just like you can’t catch up on missed sleep. It’s gone. The only thing that ends a drought is rainfall rates getting back to normal levels for an extended period of time.

Boy, you guys are on a roll!

I just got back from picking up Handsome Son at work. Hubby got his car working – it seems he got some bad gas or somehow water’s getting into his tank. Anyway, I sandwiched a visit to my Office Help and her baby. Baby is beautiful, no signs of Down’s syndrome. He’s got bright blue eyes and long, elegant fingers. Mommy is so in love, and it’s so cute to watch her with him. She’ll probably be coming home tomorrow, hopefully with baby. He’s in NICU being watched until tomorrow. She had to have extra pain meds during the delivery, probably because of her scoliosis, and it affected the baby’s breathing when he was born. Or so they think, but they’re watching to make sure it’s not a permanent thing.

Now Handsome is off doing his thing, so I’ll be going to see my Mom in a few minutes.

It’s always a good day, when there’s a new baby involved!

That said, even simply freezing outlays will require extensive entitlement (SS, Medicare, Medicaid) changes.

Freeze spending at current levels and cut 1% overall per year over the next six years. That sounds pretty specific to me.

The statement is specific, but the mathematics of how you arrive at a balanced budget after six years of doing that are completely nebulous UNTIL YOU SHOW ME.

At least Wagonburner showed something in #69, however absurd the assumptions are to get to a point where the two lines cross in 2018. For one, he already mentioned the part about the difficulty of freezing entitlement spending into the future where baby boomers are becoming an increasing (NOT DECREASING!) part of that spending. For another, assuming an ongoing +4% growth in receipts is the stuff that rainbow farting unicorns are made of, especially in light of an economy that has papered over its’ true losses since at least 2008. Finally, if we’re borrowing 43 cents of every dollar the fed spends now, what in the world makes you believe that we will continue to enjoy the same low rate on that borrowing we’re getting right now?

Those are some questions just to get started, and realize that even if you get to a “revenue neutral” point in 6 years, you still haven’t paid off all of the debt that is already accumulated – which means we aren’t balanced. So yes, as far as I’m concerned, saying you can get us balanced in six years by reducing outlays by 1% a year is nebulous crap unless and until you show me the mathematics of how you get there from here.

I just walked out on my mother. She started spouting off her talking points, straight from the MSM. I tried to explain the other side of the issue, and she blew me off like I was completely stupid. I warned her twice not to go there with me. After she dissed me again, I got up and told her that I was wissed off and started grabbing my things to leave. She looked at me with this lost look on her face, like “What did I do?” I don’t know if she realizes what she’s doing when she treats us (her kids) like idiots or if she’s truly clueless on her effect on us. Now I wonder if I should be more compassionate because she really is losing her grip on reality, or should I continue to be wissed off because this continues a trend of behavior that has been going on for as long as I can remember.

I better stop now, because I’m about to say things that I shouldn’t say. I love my mother. Sometimes it’s better if I love her from a distance.

#83 TT: I really feel for you there girlie. I have had an ongoing feud with my father about his outright refusal to listen while I lay out an idea. What usually happens is about halfway through he twists about as far as one possibly can, assumes that was my meaning then proceeds to knock down the straw man that he just set up. The fact that he did not bother to actually listen to any details nor even get a rough outline of the complete concept sends me over the wall. He will interrupt and badger with rabbit trail questions and draw me off of my point. The fact that I have asked nicely, begged, screamed in his face, refused to darken his doorway for a year or more to get him to stop the outrageous and hurtful behavior is of no consequence. It will be that or he will refuse to tell me anything about family or friends and just give me the silent treatment. I am the 4th of 6 and I don’t know that he does to the others or not, but I have made it explicitly clear that it is hurtful, it is incredibly destructive to what is left of our relationship, that it pizzes me off to the extreme and it still continues although now not as much. My mother has been a witness to this many of the times over the last 35 years or so and when I appeal to her about his bad behavior, all I get is silence, so she is just as guilty by her refusal to confront the issue. This coming Friday, my family is having the yearly reunion – hopefully this issue will not raise its ugly head again. In all honesty, he usually does not do this when there are lots of other witnesses (other than mom) around so I don’t expect any fireworks.
As far as your mom goes, I hope you can continue to have the strength to deal with her in an honorable fashion, Remember the concept of cognitave dissonance; she has heard the lies for so long that she does not know nor can she recognize the truth when she is presented with it.

You have no idea. When I took over the caregiver duties, there was a collective sigh of relief among my other siblings. This woman has made a career of alienating her own offspring. I am number seven of twelve, and to this day, I still get the occasional “thank you” from one of my brothers or sisters. Mom has stayed with some of them in the past, and they are not eager to repeat the experience. At least I don’t have her in my home, and only have to see her once a week. There are times when I actually can enjoy her company, but when she turns the “wiss you off” meter up, I have a hard time managing myself around her.

It’s always those close to you that know which buttons to push.

Me…I am an independent with a smorgasbord approach to most issues. I’m not a Democrat, Republican, Far Lefty, or Far Rightwing, which pretty much makes me unwelcome just about everywhere.

I get along with my sister by not talking about two subjects; namely we don’t speak about religion or politics. All three of us are the products of a sexually repressed (lmao) family environment; therefore we don’t generally speak of the third topic that should be verboten in polite conversation.

Our Pops was a Yellow Dog Social Democrat to the day that he died. He was a tyrant in all family matters, but at the dinner table discussions your opinion was a good as his. He had only two rules. Personal attacks were not allowed and especially personal attacks on my sister, who my Pops regarded as only slightly less holy than the Virgin Mary. Secondly, he insisted you be ready to defend your point of view.

I have found it much easier to encourage other folks to speak, but when I do speak I avoid the three generally taboo topics for public discussion.

As I said, I told my mother TWICE it was not a good subject for us to discuss. Up until then we had been having a pleasant conversation. She insisted, and continued the discussion in such a way that she tried to dismiss everything I said, and then said “Oh, but you’re a Tea Partier” in the same way she might have said, “Oh, you’re gum on my shoe”.

The only good thing about her lack of political sophistication is that she doesn’t take the time or make the effort to vote.

There’s a storm that is over the top of the island of Hispanola (Dominican Republic and Haiti) that is relatively compact and there is visible counter clockwise rotation. If it goes right over the center of Cuba it could get ripped apart by the mountains, if it veers to the north which is more likely it could wind up in the GOM. This one has greater potential because it is not over the same water from which the popcorn fart Don sucked energy.

#110 Shannon: You are correct in that forgiveness is a tough one; fortunately the forgiveness muscle gets stronger quickly with use. When HE forgives, HE REQUIRES repentance, in fact the repentance has to come first. As I view it, forgiveness with out repentance makes a mockery of the Grace of God.
Look at what happened with Jonah and the Ninevites, they repented and God forgave them. Had they not repented immediately at the word of the prophet, they would have been rendered like that of Sodom and Gomorrah. They ALL repented, (fasting, sackcloth and ashes – the whole 9 yards) from the king on down to the lowest stable mucker.
King David repented about the affair with Bathsheba and the murder of Uriah the Hittite as soon as he was confronted with it by Nathan. His repentance was complete and he never did such a thing again. King David is described in the Old Testament as a man after Y_VH’s own heart; Revelation speaks of the Key of David, what is that and how do I get one? King David still lost his first child with Bathsheeba, the one conceived in sin, but his next with her was Solomon.
King Saul, on the other hand, never made genuine repentance and the kingdom was taken from him and his line was cut off. Saul could be of service to Y_VH only as long as he stayed small in his own eyes, once he got the “big head” he mad fatal mistakes.
Of all of Israel who was “of age” that left Egypt only Joshua and Caleb got into the land of Israel. The rest did not because they would not repent of their lack of trust/faith and “put it all on the line” for Y_VH.

She was giving me the grand tour of the new restaurant when she was called away to take a phone call. She looked so serious and so grown-up. I know in my head she’s an adult, and a darn good one, but my heart still thinks she’s the little girl I loved to hold and play with. While I know she’s doing what she’s supposed to do, it’s sometimes strange to see her act so grown-up. I hear she’s been doing a good job.

I have not read all the posts yet so I don’t know if this has been mentioned:

    ABC News’ Jonathan Karl reports:

ABC News has learned that Republicans and the White House have struck a tentative deal to raise the debt ceiling before the Aug. 2 deadline. It’s not done yet, but here is the framework of the tentative deal they have worked out, according to a source familiar with the negotiations:

•Debt ceiling increase of up to $2.8 trillion
•Spending cuts of roughly $1 trillion
•Vote on the Balanced Budget Amendment
•Special committee to recommend cuts of $1.8 trillion (or whatever it takes to add up to the total of the debt ceiling increase)
•Committee must make recommendations before Thanksgiving recess
•If Congress does not approve those cuts by late December, automatic across-the-board cuts go into effect, including cuts to Defense and Medicare.

So, if this report is accurate we’ll see if this “special committee” makes the cuts called for. I’ve little to no faith in government taking what it wants now and promising to cut later.

Lily Anderson is just 10-yrs-old, but her rendition of the National Anthem before Thursday’s Braves-Pirates game at Turner Field in Atlanta inspired the longest standing ovation Braves pitcher Peter Moylan has ever witnessed.

Lily’s remarkable performance was part of “Rally Night,” a special event for kids fighting cancer. And fighting cancer is exactly what Lily has been doing since she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma Cancer in 2009.

Is This The Best Version Of The National Anthem EVER? 10-Year Old Girl Fighting Cancer Delivers it With Poise

Musically I did not find this to be the “best rendition” ever but all things considered, it was moving.

    Ladies, get your lawyer on.

Few people expect the bar exam is going to be easy, but does anyone ever anticipate it being this labor-intensive?

“A certain Northwestern Law alumna went into labor during the second day of the Illinois bar,” an unnamed source told law publication Above the Law. “She finished the exam and had her baby, her first, at 5:58 p.m. I think that is worth noting.”

    It’s definitely worth noting.

The very pregnant test-taker (who has kept her name confidential) had contacted proctors before the exam to ask permission to leave early from the exam if she were to go into labor. Usually, everyone taking the test is required to stay in the room for the entirety of the allotted time period, but proctors made an exception for the very-soon-to-be mother. One of them even helped her carry her belongings across the street to Prentice Women’s Hospital at Northwestern after she finished the exam.

Just before 6 p.m. — that’s no more than two hours after she finished her test — she gave birth to a healthy baby boy, via Caesarean section.

More info on the debt deal.

There will be a short term increase in the debt limit (as Garret says “days not weeks”) to get the legislation to pass which will include:

$2.8 trillion in deficit reduction with $1 trillion locked in through discretionary spending caps over 10 years and the remainder determined by a so-called super committee.

The Super Committee must report precise deficit-reduction proposals by Thanksgiving.

The Super Committee would have to propose $1.8 trillion spending cuts to achieve that amount of deficit reduction over 10 years.

If the Super Committee fails, Congress must send a balanced-budget amendment to the states for ratification. If that doesn’t happen, across-the-board spending cuts would go into effect and could touch Medicare and defense spending.

No net new tax revenue would be part of the special committee’s deliberations.

So, in other words, they are going to Cap, Cut, and maybe Balance.

There must be a special place in hell for this kind of lawyer

But he was stunned when he saw the amount: $0.00.
His award had been $10,005, but his lawyers at the firm Worby, Groner, Edelman & Napoli Bern lopped off $2,579 for unitemized legal expenses.
Then they took a 33.3 percent fee of $2,124.
They also subtracted $352, a fee to the lawyer who referred him.
The remaining $4,950 was withheld for unspecified “liens,” the letter says. Galvis thinks this was repayment of workers’ compensation for aid.

The scum-bag lawyers manage a “settlement” of $10K, they work on a contingency basis so they get paid out of the “settlement” BUT FIRST THEY GET TO DEDUCT UN-ITEMIZED EXPENSES? Then, once they recover the expenses they take the agreed 33%. Then the wiss-wads keep the rest for unspecified lien?? This group makes it clear why people hate lawyers.

Good morning Hamsters. Well, we made it to 72 at 6 and pleasant until Mr. Sun got over the treetops and ruined things. It’s dry (despite the ground mist from our pitiful rainfall being pulled into the sky), and it will be hot as blazes today. A light NE(!) breeze briefly teases us by ruffling the banners on the front porch and swaying the leaves in the back yard.

A juvenile squirrel visits the front porch and scouts out the living room while perched on the windowsill, looks in briefly, and heads on to more interesting things. Fortunately for woodsy creatures there are still plenty of acorns and pecans on the ground from last fall. The smaller water tank in the side pasture is down about half and needs a refill. Hawk feathers floating in it probably means one of our locals bathed there recently. Can’t deny them some small comfort. The fountain’s down about 2 gallons this morning, so its refill is on the list along with watering the porch/patio plants. The lawn can wait until tonight.

For Tedtam’s conundrum of dealing with her Mom, I can offer some advice as a been there, done that survivor. First make a list of all her meds and dosages as well as whatever supplements/vitamins she might be taking. Try to determine if she has taken them as directed or not. Make an appointment to discuss these and her behavior with your pharmacist (in a consult room, not over the counter). Pharmacists usually know much more about meds side effects, drug interactions, food and supplement interactions with drugs, and correct ways to take meds than physicians do, as this is their only business. This advice came from a dear friend who was Professor of Physiology at Baylor College of Medicine who has a degree in pharmacy and a PhD. Possibly a problem with medication could be affecting her behavior. It certainly did affect my Mom’s behavior.

Seriously consider taking her to see a physician who specializes in geriatric patients. They are kinda the opposite end of the lifespan to the pediatrician, and they have to be keen observers. Wish I could have gotten Mom to see one. Sigh

I agree others’ advice to make light of her hard-headed views that lead to miserable discord. You cannot reason with an irrational person any more than you can reason with the child that has not attained the use of reason. This does not mean the person must be irrational about everything. The veneer of civilized social behavior can fall into increasing tatters with aging or medication, letting loose the underlying mindset with greater frequency and vigor. The me-me-me 2-year old is on a roll at times, with great joy in pushing bottons to get the desired result. Keep your cool; change the subject and keep steering away from the point of contention; keep the conversation as light as possible; and have a ready excuse to leave when things get too much to bear. But don’t give the satisfaction of showing it’s gotten to you. This is not easy, Lord knows.

It is a shocker to realize that the person you’ve known all your life is mostly or totally not there any more–the exterior looks the same. It seems so much harder to cope with a mental decline that a physical one. Accepting this intellectually takes a bit of time, but that does not necessarily means the gut accepts it simultaneously. When the gut accepts the situation it is easier to be content with the knowledge you/the family have done whatever reasonably can be done given the circumstances. It comes to a point that there is no fixing things this side of Paradise. The rest is up to Providence. God bless you all.

A local real estate guy here told me yesterday he was visiting his niece in Scottsdale, Arizona a couple of months ago. She lives near the big Phoenician resort there and there is a builder in her neighborhood who has been trying to sell several spec homes he built in 2008.

The one closest to her is on a 1/4 acre lot with mature orange, lemon and grapefruit trees all over it. House is 2,600 sq. ft., 3 bdrms, 2-1/2 bath, patio, deck, nice pool with adjoining Jacuzzi, large 2 car garage, fully landscaped, sprinkler system. Never lived in – brand new.

The builder told my friend when he was there if he would write him a check for $65,000, he would hand him the deed. Original list was something like 240K.

Dang, if he bought that house for $65,000 and then successfully rent it out (in times when people are buying less homes to live in, they are renting homes to live in) for $800-$1000, he’d be making some good money on that house. It’ll pay for itself withing about 6-8 years.

However, the added McConnell wrinkle is interesting — and potentially a big win for Republicans. Essentially, Republicans get to claim credit for the cuts while laying blame for the debt increases on Obama. If they “disapprove,” Obama will veto the disapproval and end up owning all of the political baggage for the debt-ceiling increases. That’s a steep price to pay for Obama just to protect himself through the next election, although he could turn it on its ear and refuse to veto the second increase disapproval and force this fight all over again. That would, however, put the country back in “crisis” mode, and that would still be all on Obama.

This brings the deal closer to what I predicted yesterday; in fact, it almost matches it exactly. But can the leaders get the votes for it? If Obama endorses this deal, most Democrats will have no choice but to back it; after all, they have been doing the most Chicken Little screeching about the consequences of legislative failure. Boehner and McConnell will lose a significant number of Republicans, but both will probably hold a majority of their caucuses. I’d expect an agreement along these lines to pass quickly through Congress, maybe fast enough to avoid having to pass a $50 billion, two-week extension to gain time for the debate.

Deal update: $2.4T in cuts and ceiling hikes — both in two parts

My understanding is that real estate egents as well as many banks tend to look at rentals in the same light as residential property. In other words, a homeowner is seen as someone who wants an additional home whereas he really wants a property to rent out to others. If seen as somene who wants an additional home, it is very difficuilt to secure a loan for such.

We keep hearing those enticing ads for Fort Bend County locally as well. Traffic in Sugar Land gets heavier by the year, being pretty much the crossroads of the county with the Southwest Freeway (59), Highway 6, and US 90A running through it and Grand Parkway (TX99) not far away. And apparently it’s the most diverse county in the country, pretty much by happenstance. Kinda like a university town mix without the big university (other than a branch of U of H). Houses and business places pop up like mushrooms. It’s already Katy bar the door heading toward Richmond on 90A and coming south from 10 past FM 1093 (Westheimer).

The Del Webb Sun City folks finally completed their first section of the Sweetgrass development in Richmond close to 59, and early residents have moved in. The site is next to an exhisting golf course/country club, a block farther to the main Fort Bend County Library, shopping centers on both sides of 59 just south down the road, and it’s a short dirve to Sugar Land’s amenities. There are several new medical and dental offices/clinics farther north on the road from the library and a new award-winning veterinary clinic/hospital. What a change from when we moved out in the countryside 31 years ago across the Brazos from Richmond.

The U.S. Secret Service does more than protect Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. — the agency also pays him rent.

Since April, Mr. Biden has collected more than $13,000 from the agency charged with protecting the lives of he and his family, for use of a rental cottage adjacent to the waterfront home he owns in a Wilmington, Del., neighborhood.

    1. Home invasion in a nice suburb of Houston, perp had whole family face down on the floor, a little kid started to cry and Mom raised up to comfort him. Perp shot her in the face with a shotgun but she survived, horribly disfigured.
    2. After some muggings/armed robbery at an auto dealership on the Southwest Freeway, perp was robbing customers in line at a restaurant or cafeteria nearby. Shot and killed one man in front of the victim’s wife.

When the original theatrical versions of Lord of the Rings were released on Blu-ray, much was made of the quality of the transfers, particularly that for Fellowship. The image was very soft for a film that was under a decade old and it seemed to be made using an older master. In this case, New Line looks to have gone back and redone the mastering for the extended editions and there is more detail than there was before. Of course, they also went back and did some color correction on the image, which has led to a firestorm of online controversy.

Phew. When The Lord of the Rings first went to Blu-Ray and I read that the video was poorer than that of regular DVD, I thought, “why would anyone want to buy the Blu-Ray?” I also decided that if this happened with the extanded version there’s no way I’d want it on Blu-Ray. So I’m glad to read that it does look more detailed. that said I’ll be happy for anyone to buy me the LORT extended version on Blu-Ray.

The dramatic resolution lifted a cloud that had threatened the still-fragile economic recovery and rattled global markets.

The agreement would slice at least $2.4 trillion from federal spending over a decade, a steep price for many Democrats, too little for many Republicans.

The deal, with scant time remaining before Tuesday’s deadline for paying government bills, “will allow us to avoid default and end the crisis that Washington imposed on the rest of America,” Obama said.

I’ve no idea as to any specifics.

It’s a deal: Obama, Congress will avert default

I either never knew that story or had forgotten it. I was so sick of the Clintons I probably skipped the story at the time.

Coulter: It’s Fun to Keep Making Dems Vote Against Balanced Budget Amendment

    Goes something like this:

Host: “We know the balanced budget amendment won’t pass”

Coulter: “No, but it’s fun to keep the Democrats voting against it.”

    LOL!
