Wednesday Presidential Aging Open Comments

A comment from Simple on the Michelle Bachmann issue triggered a thought last night. Simple made the point that we are electing people and not Saints. This is true as far as he took it.
If one were to take the next step, we can see that the job takes a tremendous toll on the occupant of the office. I found a site that had before & after pictures of all the presidents from Gerald Ford onward. All show significant aging; some moreso than others.

You should see what I look like before and after living under Obama for only 2.5 years. I’ve gone from a healthy, good looking, middle aged gentleman to a broken down physical, emotional, and mental wreck. And whoever thought that the President would have little or no impact on the average citizen.

I still believe today that Pres. O is a bigger threat to my personal security than the Taliban.

I have a few comments to update and to add to yesterday’s discussion as follows:

Ms. Bachman is not qualified to be President simply by virtue of the fact that she is a woman, and like it or not, is controlled by emotion rather than reason. By her trying to overcome that normal, inherent feature, she winds up with debilitating headaches. She should accept that she is a female, hard wired the way she is, and deal with it.

The balanced budget amendment is merely another cry for help and admission by the Congress that it is unable to do the right thing left to its own devices. It might sound good, but it’ll never get off the ground. Until we elect principled people to represent us in Congress we will continue to head down the gold paved road to hades. I’m reminded of the reason given for Congressional salaries and expense accounts – they have to make enough to not be susceptible to bribes. How about just hiring some honest people to start with.

Lastly, as to the debt ceiling, I predict in the end there will be great hoopla from both parties, and the effect of their efforts will change nothing (if we are lucky). If not, taxes will go up, spending will go up, the deficit will go up, and we will be told how bad it would have been had they not made the deal. (that’s something like peeing on your leg and telling you it’s raining I think).

It does set the stage well for Rick Perry to play the part of the White Knight.

If the constitution as is couldn’t stop 1/6th of the U.S. economy to be “deemed” derailed, some little old amendment is not going to get in their way to get their way. Laws are there to not so much prevent the action, but to punish it after the fact.

CC&B is too little too late. Not saying it shouldn’t be done, but it’s closing the barn door after the horses have all run off. Consider this article in NR by Kevin Williamson. Some choice snippets:

I was in Washington Monday, debating Cato’s erudite Dan Mitchell about the no-new-taxes pledge. Mr. Mitchell and I agree on the fundamentals and differ on the politics. What I found mildly despair-inducing, however, was the question-and-answer session, during which the predominant concern expressed by the audience was how to ensure that our guys “win” the debt-ceiling debate. While I understand that you have to win elections to get things done, we simply must head off a downgrade, even if at great political cost. Nobody is going to “win” a downgrade.

This is too important to be about winning elections, yet even a lot of very smart people are caught up in making sure “our side” wins. The problem is, there will be NO winners:

The thing that has not been sufficiently understood, I think, is this: The United States is not on a downgrade watch because the markets fear we won’t raise the debt ceiling in time to avoid a default; the United States is on a downgrade watch because the markets believe the debt-ceiling debate presents the last real opportunity for the government to enact a meaningful fiscal-reform program before it is well and truly too late to avoid a national crisis. The credit agencies, wisely or not, aren’t worried about the short-term political fight leading to an immediate default, but about the near- to medium-term fiscal situation, which is plainly unsustainable.
I sincerely hope that in five or ten years, I will have to sheepishly admit that I was among the alarmists back in 2011. But right now, I believe that the question isn’t how to “win” the debt-ceiling fight, but how to survive the underlying economic disorder it represents.

Food for thought, even if it is depressing food. Trust me, I’d rather be talking about baseball.

Was walking down the driveway to fetch the wretched Chron at the time appointed (5:43) for the shuttle and ISS to fly into view just over the horizon for the last time to see them together. Regrettably the trees blocked the view. But I’d seen them in years past on flights visible to Earthlings, and that memory is clear. Bright and lovely as any planet they’d streak across the night sky for several minutes and then disappear over the horizon, embraced by God’s endless creation. Thank you, Lord.

Drudge has a story about a goofy sheik in UAR who has his name imprinted on an island off the coast of Abu Dhabi.

    http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3703941/Billionaire-sheikh-carves-out-his-name-in-desert-in-capital-letters-visible-from-space.html

I was surprised to see that it is visible right now on Google maps, although geographically upside down. Guess it must have been there for quite a while. Seed Google maps with “Al Fuţaysi” then zoom in a bit on the south-east coast of the island. The “HA” shows up much better because those letters are water-filled and show as very dark against the sand.

The anonymity of the Internet makes it easier for people to say what’s on their mind without fear of retribution. That can be a good thing in certain situations, but this cloak of the online world is too often used as a cover for spewing bile that most people would never let slip in face-to-face conversations.

You don’t need to look much further than most local news sites or blogs to see tirades based on race, politics or assumptions.

After all, it’s easy to just type out what’s on your mind a push the post button when you don’t have to worry about an immediate, in-person confrontation.

That anger-inducing comment may appear only in cyberspace, but at the other end of a computer, it’s making someone mad in real life.

Instead of adding to that anger, just remember what your mom told you before making your next online comment: If you can’t think of anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

    I couldn’t help myself:

When Franks [Rep. Gary Franks elected from Connecticut in 1990] was defeated for reelection in 1996, CBC member Bill Clay of Missouri wrote a six-page letter to the departing lawmaker, characterizing Franks as a “foot shuffling, head-scratching ‘Amos and Andy’ brand of ‘Uncle Tom-ism’” and a “Negro Dr. Kevorkian, a pariah, who gleefully assists in suicidal conduct to destroy his own race.” Rep. Clay described Franks as one of those “Negro wanderers” whose “goal … is to maim and kill other blacks for the gratification and entertainment of — for lack of a more accurately descriptive word — ultra-conservative white racists.” No other member of the CBC was willing to condemn or criticize Clay’s remarks.

during the Contract with America debate, Charles Rangel complained that “Hitler wasn’t even talking about doing these things” that were in the Contract with America.

In the course of addressing the Congressional Black Caucus in September of 2005, Rangel, still exploiting the aftermath of Katrina, likened President Bush to Bull Connor, the Alabama police commissioner notorious for his racist opposition to the early civil-rights movement.

Said Rangel: “The racism in this country is well known. Arizona has just pulled the sheets off of it.”

When I was battling HISD for the proper education for my son, I cried. I cried a lot. I was put through eight hour long meetings (no food breaks, only restroom breaks), was ganged up on (our last ARD meeting had 15 people from HISD, while my hubby and I were only allowed 1 friend to take notes and three others that we had requested; three others were denied entry to the meeting despite my reading the federal law out loud to the assembly that gave us the right to invite whomever we chose), and had to relive my son’s trials and tribulations over and over again. This was my baby boy, and I had to do what I had to do to try to get him appropriately educated. It’s hard to discuss your kid’s hardships and not get emotionally involved. It got to the point that as soon as I took my seat, a box of tissues was placed in front of me.

One educator complimented me on my tenacity. My response was “I may tear up, but I don’t give up!” She agreed and some of the others smiled (not all of them were motherwissers, mostly just the higher-up bureaucracy).

So, even though women may get emotional, don’t you for a moment think it makes them ineffective. I’ve always known I’m not fit for political office, but a stable woman even in the throes of PMS is not likely to make a decision that would (1) be incredibly incorrect or (2) not fixable. Heck, we’ve had enough men make crappy decisions that were long-term or permanent, and they didn’t have the excuse of reproductive organ misfires.

    Wait…maybe they did….

You left off Jeane Kirkpatrick on the list of exceptional women who don’t fit the mold. Regular readers know that I acknowledge that of a US population of approximately 150 million women that there are a few who I do admire, in addition to my mother of course. Contrast and compare Sarah Palin to Ms. Bachman. Both are conservative and talk the conservative line – but one embraces her femininity while the other seems to have difficulty dealing with it and suppressing her feelings, resulting in physical pain from time to time.

The fact is that men and women are wired differently. In spite of the liberal liberated woman philosophy prevailing after 50 or 60 years of government force feeding, that fact remains unchanged. Want to see a screw-up organization – find one headed by a woman who’s trying to prove that she is just as tough as a man. Common sense is thrown out the window, minor cases are made into mountains in an effort to claim a few scalps, and the policy manual rules without regard for individual circumstances. Anyway, that’s all for now. Some day I’ll write the complete book on the subject.
