Weekend Realpolitik Open Comments

Forty years ago, Henry Kissinger went to China to visit with Chou En Lai to pave the way for President Nixon to meet with Mao Tse Tung.
Love him, like him, hate him, or have ambivalent feelings, Kissinger had a very distinct, long-lasting, and significant impact on US foreign policy. During his tenure as National Security Advisor and later as Secretary of State, there was little doubt of our position on foreign policy topics.
Kissinger is a strong proponent of realpolitik, the view that relations should be driven from a purely practical perspective, rather from an ideological or moral one. In this view, one does not have allies, per se, but simply shares interests and goals with others.
Ultimately, this view is what allowed the US to meet with China, along with our alignments with some pretty unsavory regimes in order to counter the Soviets in the Cold War. As with most things, realpolitik has some tradeoffs, but foreign relations are a fairly good area for it to work, since many of our adversaries practice similar strategies. It is actually unusual to find others who are anywhere near bound by a moral code. It is purely survival by whatever means you can stomach.
This firm negotiating position and philosophy became the basis for the ancient Vulcan proverb “Only Nixon could go to China”. It contrasts well with President Passion Fingers, who sees foreign relations as some sort of Junior High-like popularity contest, with the goal of being liked, rather than actually advancing our national interests.

President Passion Fingers is no President Nixon.

I’m still in Orlando, leaving in a bit, I hope the traffic will be better today than yesterday. At least there are many hiways byways and pig trails out of here so I’ll take the path of least Resistance. 😉
They said that there were over a million people here for the launch, and MOST of them were on the “Beachline Expressway” yesterday afternoon. 🙁

Athoughtful article here about how the Tea Party can “appeal to the Left” through continuing to focus
    on Constitutionally sanctioned Liberty.

At the present moment, it sounds farfetched to say that only the Tea Party can address this concern in a way that can attract liberal voters to Republican candidates. But does it sound any less farfetched to say that establishment Republicanism can gain the support of any liberals worthy of the name? Again and again, the corporatist GOP bankrolls “centrist,” “pro-business” candidates who become slaves, never masters, of identity politics. And again and again they brutally fail. Lest we forget, the ranks of the Tea Party were first swelled by just this perversity.

That Establishment Republicans are slaves to identity politics can be illustrated by their slavish fear of the Main Stream Media. They will warn against a policy or principal by wating against how such might look in the press, never realizing that their medial slave masters will never portray them in a favorable light no matter what they do.

The cruelest possible fate awaits establishment Republicans who still hope to seduce liberals by promising slightly more take-home pay than whatever Andrew Cuomo can get you — especially in an era when the punditocracy is a-tingle at the prospect of a presidential race in which Andrew Cuomo replaces Joe Biden on the Democratic ticket.

Instead, Republican hopes hang on the ability of Tea Partiers to follow through explicitly on the great implicit promise of their movement. Political liberty increases, not decreases, human flourishing.

And therein lies the central fear of both Establishment Republicans and Establishment Democrats. Both engage in the kind of crony capitalism that uses tax dollars to build staduims and race tracks, and passes laws that give thier freinds and families monopolistic control over horse racing and gambling. That entertainment enterprises like these represent the Bread and Circuses the Romans uses to mollify thier citizens is no happy accident.

The Tea Party scares the bejabbers out of both Estasblishment Replicans and Establishment Democrats, and for the same reason. We are uncontrolled by anything more than a common cause, and that common cause is the increase of Liberty through decreasing the size and power of the government so that we all may flourish and so that we can have our legitmate differences with our Liberal freinds without them being used by the powerful as a fulcrum between us so that they may enrich themselves and thier friends.

Good mornning Hamsters. No rain yesterday, and not even a near miss. Down to 75 this morning and slightly less humid than yesterday (but that’s only relative); mostly cloudy so far and likely unproductive. Sigh
Encouraging observations on the mood of Wisconsin folk likely to affect the upcoming recall elections comes from my decades-long friends in Madison. They have a second home in Door County (in the thumb of Wisconsin sticking out into Lake Michigan) that is a popular resort, vacation, and second home retreat. Small towns dot the peninsula; the largest is Sturgeon Bay (~10,000).
The Fourth of July parade in Baileys Harbor included some hopeful candidates in the recall elections upcoming this month. There are 6 Republicans and 3 Democrats in recalls, all the result of the 14 Democrat senators fleeing to Illinois in February to avoid a quorum and thus stifle Governor Walker’s budget repair bill. It didn’t work but raised animosity to fever pitch. Union thuggery (instate and out-of-state imports) prompted recall petitions against the Republicans in retaliation for conservatives initiating recalls against the Democrats who fled. Union machinations managed to get some petitions against other Democrat senators thrown out.
Friends said the Democrats in the parade received tepid support and loud booing along the route, and the Republicans received loud cheering that drowned out any boos from the liberal supporters. In summer, folks from all over the state and nation are there as well as half of Illinois, so the crowd wasn’t just locals. The recalls should be intersesting. Bucky Badger is roaring.

Let’s just hope that sentiment is nationwide. I kind of have a feeling that 2010 will be like the fat lady clearing her throat before her really big song in 2012. If things keep going the way they are we could be looking at an R (TEA-PARTY) landslide, including the congress, that makes the Reagan Revolution look tame by comparison.

I did it (the auto bailout) all for the unions.

At a farewell dinner of the Auto Task Force held in the restaurant Rosa Mexicano in late July 2009 that you allegedly said “I did this all for the unions.”

Mr. Bloom: No I did not say that.

Rep. Burton: You didn’t say that?

    Mr. Bloom: No sir.

Rep. Burton: So, you were misquoted?

    Mr. Bloom: That’s correct.

Rep. Burton: Well, I’m going to call that guy up and ask him if you said that. You know that you are under oath here?

    Mr. Bloom: I’m fully aware.

Rep. Burton: You made no comment like that at all?

    Mr. Bloom: No sir.

So now the question is: Did Bloom say it, not say it, or did he say it and it was a joke? Bloom says he didn’t say it. But ABC News reports that a White House source is referring reporters to Rattner’s book, adding that Rattner “clearly writes that Bloom made the comment as a joke.”

That has Republicans on Capitol Hill confused. “Bloom is denying having said it in the first place, but the White House is saying it’s just a joke,” says a Hill source. “Well, you can’t have it both ways.”

If they don’t go after this guy like they are going after Roger Clemmons there’s gonna be riots and people with clubs and pitch forks storming the capital. We can no longer allow the Ds (or anyone else for that matter) to lie under oath and get away with it.

    HPD investigation-speed:4 furlongs per fortnight.
It only took 3 months to figure it out.

HOUSTON (KTRK) — It all began with a video showing a scuffle between Patti LaBelle’s entourage and a West Point cadet. At first, it was a case of he said, she said. Now two people have been charged with a crime.
LaBelle’s hairdresser and bodyguard have warrants out for their arrest; both are charged with assault even though the original story to police painted a much different picture.
There was no audio of the March 11 incident at Bush Intercontinental Airport, but according to court documents, the video speaks for itself. Patti LaBelle’s bodyguard, Efrem Holmes, originally told Houston police he was just defending LaBelle’s son. After watching the video, three months later, an officer reached a different conclusion.

US President Barack Obama urged Democrats and Republicans on Saturday to take a “balanced approach” to cutting deficit before a new round of key talks aimed at averting a debt default.

“I believe we need a balanced approach,” Obama said in his weekly radio address. “That means taking on spending in our domestic programs and our defense programs.”

It looks like it may really hit the fan in Malaysia:

If he is put under popular pressure, Najib may reconsider plans for a snap election and hold back on reforms such as cutting fuel subsidies or unwinding an affirmative action program for the country’s Malay majority.
    /snip
Najib took power in 2009, and inherited a divided ruling coalition which had been weakened by historic losses in the 2008 polls. He has promised to restructure government and economy and introduced an inclusive brand of politics aimed at uniting the country’s different races.

Najib’s approval ratings have risen from 45 percent to 69 percent in February, according to independent polling outfit Merdeka Center. But analysts said recent ethnic and religious differences have undermined his popularity.

It looks like affirmative action fails everywhere it is tried.

Bonecrusher has a good #14 post regarding Ron Bloom lying under oath. Ron Bloom holds some pretty prestigious positions in the Obama administration. I just spotted the following on The Blaze where, as with many other things, Glenn Beck was the first to point out Ron Bloom’s love for Mao Zegong (or Tse Tung) and virtually endorsed the concept of power coming “from the barrel of a gun.” Bloom said this in front of a United Steel Workers meeting.

Of course it can often seem that these reveling details are lost in the fast moving news cycles and giant machinery of the bureaucratic system. Until recently when Congressman Connie Mack (R-FL 14) brought a little poetic justice to our political process during a late June hearing for Stimulus Oversight and Government Spending by asking Mr. Bloom a tough series of questions about the remarks he made in the video. Mack played the clips for Bloom as he awkwardly tries to explain them away.

This ocurred at the same meeting Bonecrusher cited above. There’s vide on on it in the link as well. The irony here is that about 2 minutes after playing the video of Bloom saying “the free market is nonsense”, Bloom says he didn’t say that. This is most likely because earlier in the oversight eeting Bloom said it as a joke. A gesture. I think the O admininstration is having confusion over joke and serious speech. That’s probably revealing as to why the the O administration’s policies are ineffective for the economy. The administration itself is a joke.

The video from the blaze that shows Beck’s take on Bloom is not available. Perhaps The Blaze did not get Beck’s permission to play it. 😉

Though winning the GOP nomination looks unlikely at this point for former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson, that hasn’t stopped him from getting creative when seeking much-needed campaign contributions.

After making surprise appearances on online poker forums earlier this week, Johnson opened a new page on his website Thursday geared exclusively toward poker players. “You’re getting a raw deal,” it reads. “It’s your money. 1,200 miles gets them almost to Greece, eastern Bulgaria & Romania, and southern Ukraine. While this is likely (and should be) troubling to Israel & her supporters, it’s less alarming than it may seem on the surface.

Accuracy of these missiles is probably measured in several tens, if not hundreds of meters. This means that they are terror weapons, not dependable tactical or strategic ones. Even if they develop a nuclear weapon, they would still have to miniaturize it and get the overall launch system to a state of very high reliability before it would be a serious threat – they would only get one shot.

A much more reliable delivery system would be a shipping container.

As Bryan noted here, Texas went ahead on July 7th with the execution of a Mexican national who had been convicted of rape and murder years ago. Texas did so because the Supreme Court, quite properly, refused to make her stop. I just updated my blog article here to note that Mexico is all upset.

As Bryan noted here, Texas went ahead on July 7th with the execution of a Mexican national who had been convicted of rape and murder years ago. Texas did so because the Supreme Court, quite properly, refused to make her stop. I just updated my blog article here to note that Mexico is all upset.

    Pobrecito México.

    Don’t mess with Texas.

    Yup, good advice.

Here’s a good take on Hamous’ MMA and gays.

Two NY Men Can Marry Now — Why Can’t They Fight?

Last week, after a long and heated battle in Albany, New York state’s gays won the right to marry. Whatever your views on same sex marriage, this was a historic occasion. Yet now that two men can get married in New York, why shouldn’t two men be allowed to compete in the full-contact sport known as mixed martial arts (MMA)?

I come from a deeply religious Catholic background, but because of my strong libertarian streak I appreciate the case for gay marriage. Perhaps this same libertarian streak is why I am an avid fan of MMA, an exciting and surprisingly graceful blend of martial arts disciplines such as muay thai, kickboxing, karate, Brazilian jujitsu, and wrestling. For those readers who haven’t heard of it, you will. MMA promotions are sponsored by such household names as Harley-Davidson, Burger King, and Bud Light.

In April 2010, I wrote about the ongoing fight to legalize the sport in New York, one of the lone holdouts among major states. Since then the effort has gone nowhere, having passed a vote in the state Senate for the second time only to be kept off the assembly agenda by the stall tactics of opponents.

And if Hamous still thinks MMA is “gay”, he could not be more wrong. 😯

Dude, relax. Depending on the definition of where the boundaries of the Indian Ocean actually are, they could use these:

Maybe relaxing is the wrong thing to do.

China and Iran are constructing a series of strategically placed harbors – their strings of salt water pearls – partially for independent strategic reasons but equally to ensure maritime commerce in oil, gas, other licit resources, and illicit technologies between both nations can continue uninterrupted. Those ports provide facilities for the two countries’ warships as well, extending their military power into a region hitherto dominated by the U.S., Britain, and India. To ensure the Indian Ocean’s vital transportation lanes continue remaining accessible to all nations and transfer of prohibited items does not occur, the U.S and Britain need to remain actively engaged in building political, social, and economic relations with several nations in South Asia. Diminishment in access to Indian Ocean ports will have serious long-term consequences for American and British military and commercial operations in a troubled yet important region of the world.

Since we weren’t in a big hurry and didn’t know how bad the traffic would be on the Florida Turnpike, we headed up through Apopka, Leesburg, Ocala and stayed on US 27/Alt27 all the way up to Perry Florida, then US 98 to Newport, next, Pig Trails to Bristol, crossed the Chattahoochee at Blountstown then turned north and headed to Alabama. If you’re ever in that part of the world, US 27 is a neat road, 4 lane from Ocala to Perry with only a few small towns to go through and like most roads in Florida, it is mostly straight as an arrow. US 27 along with US 17 and US 41 used to be the Yankee expressways for the northerners coming to Florida. On US 27 you’ll see a lot of beautiful horse ranchs with huge pastures and barns with all the board fences. US 98 is only a 2 lane here and goes through the Apalachicola National Forest with all it’s spring feed rivers/creeks. Hey, I made it in 7 hours, WITHOUT ever getting on a freeway! 😀

House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) abandoned efforts Saturday night to reach a comprehesive debt-reduction deal worth more than $4 trillion in savings, telling President Obama that a mid-size package was the only politically possible alternative to avoid a first-ever default on the nation’s mounting national debt.

After speaking with Obama — who is hosting a key meeting Sunday evening on steps forward on the debt issue — Boehner issued the following statement:

“Despite good-faith efforts to find common ground, the White House will not pursue a bigger debt reduction agreement without tax hikes. I believe the best approach may be to focus on producing a smaller measure, based on the cuts identified in the Biden-led negotiations, that still meets our call for spending reforms and cuts greater than the amount of any debt limit increase.”

The impasse on the massive plan leaves Obama and congressional negotiators back at the smaller package of cuts to federal agency budgets and more modest reforms to entitlement programs. That package, which had been negotiated by Vice President Biden and key GOP leaders including House Majority Leader Eric I. Cantor (R-Va.), would come to somewhere between $2 trillion and $2.4 trillion in savings, allowing for Congress to approve an extension of the federal debt ceiling into the spring of 2013.

    I’d like $4T but would $2T suffice?

Conservatives are the least likely to believe that the Bible is simply a book of fables (7 percent). Moderates (20 percent) and liberals (31 percent), though, are much more likely to accept this notion. However, 48 percent of liberals and 55 percent of Moderates believe that the Bible is the “inspired word of God). Still, when it comes to the belief that the words actually come from God, Republicans (46 percent) trump both groups.

That’s because Conservatives tend to know truth better tan the poltical alternatives. 🙂

#76 Darren: When do the “cuts” take place? If they are more than 2 years out they mean nothing and will never happen. All Federal spending must be reduced to the FY2007 levels as a starting point and we make big cuts from there. We must not let our elected representatives forget that blowing out the budget (which is what happened as soon as Nanzi Pelousi became speaker) and then claiming that this is the new baseline is nothing but bovine processed hay.

I don’t know exactly when the cuts take place but I think talks like these usually focus on a ten year time span. So the $2T in cuts would spread over 10 years. So I guess we’d be talking about $200B/yr cuts (that would still leave us with about $1.2T in yearly defecits) if Boehner walks away with $2T in cuts.

You got to hand it to the D’s. With a second rate community organizer, they blew the R’s out of the water on the budget negotiations – going all the way back to the D’s just blowing off the budget altogether under that wench Pelosi..

What a bunch of political incompetents the R’s are. They let the D’s, for the umpteenth time, use class warfare successfully against them and baited them to go on record in support of the wealthy and big corporate interests – while they cemented their disingenuous position of supporting the common man.

It’s just more political theater that accomplished nothing for the coming fiscal crisis and buys a small amount of additional time for the political class – which was the goal in the first place. True to form, they will take us right up to the countdown of the coming fiscal collapse.

    Pretty much sums it up:

    The GOP’s Fiscal Reykjavik Moment

Most folks who recall the 1980s—or who have read chapter 10 of my book—will know that the climactic moment of Reagan’s Soviet diplomacy was the Reykjavik summit in October 1986, when Gorbachev offered huge concessions to the United States on nuclear weaponry, culminating in the central agreement to abolish all strategic nuclear weapons in 10 years. But there was a catch: Reagan had to give up development of missile defense. Reagan said “Nyet,” and the summit collapsed, amidst gloom and doom and near universal condemnation of Reagan for stubbornly refusing to yield on his silly missile defense idea.

Before long, however, it became clear that Reagan’s “stubbornness” (the history books will—already are—understand it as “statesmanship” rather than stubbornness) was the key to getting the Soviet Union essentially to capitulate on nearly all of Reagan’s terms, and fairly quickly, too.

The budget talks in search of a “grand deal” that are apparently under way this weekend look like the fiscal equivalent of Reykjavik: Obama may well offer substantial reform of entitlements a decade down the road, in return for a GOP concession on taxes today. On the surface it will look like Obama is willing to break with his base, and in a sense he would be, as Nancy Pelosi will prostrate herself in front of the Social Security Administration. But Speaker Boehner should nonetheless say “Nyet” to this deal, as we’ve seen this movie before—with the 1982 budget deal that was supposed to deliver $3 in spending cuts for every $1 in tax increase. (It had the opposite effect: one study concluded it results in $1.06 in new spending for every $1 in new taxes.) President Bush I’s 1990 budget deal was arguably a little better in its outcome, but note that it didn’t stop Bill Clinton from raising taxes further when he arrived at the White House because, well, that’s just what Democrats do. There’s simply no ay to guarantee that a future Democratic Congress (or a weak Republican one) won’t simply cancel future entitlement reforms five or ten years down the road before they go into effect.

What happened after Reykjavik is instructive. Gorbachev went back to Moscow, and the Politburo reassessed its position, concluding that they had to abandon their demand to junk SDI and reach a deal with Reagan. Similarly, if the budget talks between now and August 2 (the debt ceiling deadline) collapse because of a GOP refusal to raise taxes, liberals and the media (but I repeat. . .) will howl at the moon, but Obama will have little choice but to come back to the table on Republican terms.

One little bitty problem. Weepy is no Reagan.

I wear headphones at work. On weekday mornings I listen to Dennis Miller on the web through a live broadcast on a radio station located in the NY Fingerlakes region, then switch to Limbaugh on WBAP in Dallas. From there I go to my Pandora station (Guy Clark and other Texas artists, with a bunch of Texas Swing mixed in). Pandora will let you listen to 40 hours of free music per month, after that you have to pay for it. I usually spend 2-3 hours or so a day on Pandora and I can generally go all month without reaching that limit. UNLESS I listen to it while I’m working on the weekend. When I’m working on the weekend, I’ll line up a bunch of You Tube videos before I start work and listen to those so I don’t burn up Pandora time.

    Well;

If Boehner is saying “Abso-freakin-lutely no” to any tax hikes, then I’d say he’s reached that Reyjavik moment. Reagan didn’t trade away Star Wars for a deal, and Boehner’s not trading tax hikes for spending cuts down the road.

Tax hikes is what Barry and his base have wanted all along, now they aren’t getting them. The Dems HAVE to accept the cuts, or they are going to be the ones who look like they are standing in the way of any deal.

The proof will be in the pudding, but this does look like a line in the sand to me, even if its not all that I want.

In the Spring of 2009, the Obama administration called for the banning of “assault rifles” and .50 BMG “sniper rifles” due to their use in crimes by Mexican drug cartels. Obama dubiously alleged that 90% of these weapons were tracked back to the United States, implying that Americans have an obligation to surrender some of our freedoms to keep these weapons from being smuggled illegally over the border and used in Mexican-on-Mexican violence in Mexico. In this vintage clip, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre discusses Obama’s proposals with Glen Beck.

Obama backed off these proposals a month later, noting that such a ban would not be politically feasible at this time.

In Fall of 2009, the Obama Administration conceived Operation Fast and Furious, in which the ATF sold thousands of advanced weapons to Mexican drug cartels in order to track them once they were used in crimes. This policy perfectly dovetailed with Obama’s gun control arguments. First of all, by selling guns to the cartels that the ATF could definitely trace back to the US (because they were bought from the ATF), the percentage of guns used in Mexican crimes traceable to American guns would increase. ATF supervisors rejoiced at their success when they found that these guns were being used for violence in Mexico.

    (snip)

And which guns did the ATF sell to the cartels? AK-47-type assault rifles and Barrett .50 BMG sniper rifles. Exactly the types of guns that Obama hoped to ban due to their use by the cartels.

I’m not saying that the Obama Administration intentionally magnified the precise circumstances that they were using to justify their gun control proposals. However, their reckless policy not only had this effect, but provided guns to criminal gangs that were used to murder U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, ICE Special Agent Jaime Zapata and about 150 Mexican law enforcement personnel. Those involved in this tragic irony must be punished accordingly. It is vital that the public comes to know who in the administration knew what and when they knew it. Kudos to Congressman Issa for bringing this deadly scandal into the light. Shame on the MSM for not making this a top story.

#119 Darren: This is right out of the Saul Alinsky playbook:
    Goal: Increased gun control
problem: public does not want gun control laws
solution: put more guns into the hands of known criminals and when violence necessarily goes up, public will demand more gun control laws
goal: satisfy public with more gun control laws

They tried the same BS during Clinton’s admin; they refused to enforce current gun laws so gun crime would go up and the public will demand that the feds “do something” which, to the feds, always means more gun control laws. Remember the “assault weapons” ban, the decreased magazine capacity, and the 7 day waiting period? Those were instituted by the Clinton admin gun grabbers and were undone under Bush 43.

The problem that the foul “O” admin faces now is that the public KNOWS that the ATF was pushing the arms into the hands of the criminals, which is a federal crime, a “high crime and or misdemeanor” if you will. The massacres at Ruby Ridge and Waco are still fresh in the minds of those who are awake. The real question now is how high up the food chain does this go, what did they know and when did they know it? My suspicion is that it rests on the desk of the foul “O” himself and that of Valerie Jarrett. I doubt that Joe “the d1psh1t” Biden has the mental capacity to have any involvement in this.

My suspicion is that it rests on the desk of the foul “O” himself and that of Valerie Jarrett. I doubt that Joe “the d1psh1t” Biden has the mental capacity to have any involvement in this.

Regarding loud music played even louder: Those who do pay dearly for it in hearing loss. So do folks who work or play in noisy environments without ear protection. Eventually it takes its toll. But some unlucky folks lose hearing by being too close to one very loud noise like a gunshot or explosion. While I do not want to reengage in another Ramos and Compean debate, here’s what I find very similar in the Ibrahimi case wit hthat of the two ex-border patrol officers.

A moment later, Angel, 29, of Laurel, was on the ground, bleeding from a single shot to his buttocks in a nearby parking lot. The man with an “Only god can judge me” tattoo across his chest died later that morning at the Prince George’s County Trauma Center.

Hmmmm, not to bring up an old argument or anything but since when is getting shot in the back buttocks considered self defense?

    Just before that:

The store owner opened fire – releasing a volley of six hollow-point bullets into the cold winter air.

    Wreckless shooting?

While Angel was apparently unarmed, running away and shot from behind, prosecutors decided earlier this year not to file charges in the Dec. 28 shooting. They also didn’t take the case before a grand jury.

“The law is not crystal clear. One can make arguments for charging or for not charging,” Deputy State’s Attorney William Roessler said. “In the end, we felt the self-defense claim would ultimately prevail.”

Despite the prosecutor’s decision – which surprised legal experts contacted by The Capital – the case raises questions about what constitutes the line between self-defense and murder.

Sole discretion of the prosecutor saved Ibrahimi from being prosecuted, not Ibrihim’s actions themselves.

“It just doesn’t look like self-defense to me,” said George Harper, an attorney representing Angel’s widow, Nancy Aldano. He plans to file a wrongful death lawsuit against Ibrahimi in the coming weeks.

He’ll probably win especially considering the location.

“It looks like he chased him down and killed him,” Harper said.

In an interview with police, Koran recalled Ibrahimi followed the robber outside and opened fire.

“As soon as he got out the door (he started shooting). It wasn’t even a second,” Koran said, according to a police recording. “I just thought he was a little reckless for shooting.”

    Hmmmm…

What transpired outside the gas station on Route 198 not far from the Laurel Park race course was neither fully captured on video nor witnessed by Koran or Dieye. For details, police and prosecutors were forced to rely primarily on Ibrahimi’s version of events.

Which conflicts with other’s testimonies. Testimonies from those who did not see the entire thing.

“He looked at me right away with his hand in his pocket. That scared me so much I shot the first shot,” Ibrahimi told Detective Jason McNemar, explaining he thought Angel was turning around to shoot. “My estimate at that moment, I be dead.”

Ibrahimi saw no gun; just shot Angel because Angel scared him.

Ibrahimi, a Jordanian immigrant, fired a total of six Federal-brand rounds as he chased Angel around the building.

Is chasing someone while shooting at them considered “self-defense”?

Ibrahimi told detectives he kept firing because Angel kept turning around toward him.

Only one of the shots connected with Angel, striking him in the right buttocks.

    “Hmmmmm” to both.

It didn’t matter that Angel – an illegal immigrant with only traffic crimes on his record in Maryland – was trying to run away at the time of the shooting, Roessler said. Under his reading of state law, a store owner is allowed to pursue a thief and try to reclaim his property.
    ______________________________________________________________________
    On the flip side:

“The owner was under no obligation to remain in his store or to retreat,” Roessler said.

He added that since Angel said in the store he had a gun, Ibrahimi was within his rights to use lethal force when he saw the man swing his arm around.

    That makes sense to me.

“If you believe the store owner, and we have nothing to contradict him, then he responded legally,” said Roessler, stressing that he found Ibrahimi to be serious, candid, soft-spoken and “believable.”

I guess this is one area which fell apart for Ramos and Compean. Despite the other’s testimony regarding Ibrahimi, prosecutors decided there wasn’t anything to contradict Ibrahimi’s story and thus did not pursue charges.

Harper, the attorney representing Angel’s widow, disagrees. In a June 6 letter to the State’s Attorney’s Office, he argued Ibrahimi became the aggressor as soon as he left the store in pursuit of Angel.

“Once (Angel) had exited the store and begun his retreat, Mr. Ibrahimi had a duty to retreat,” Harper wrote in the letter. “The peril was not so imminent that he could not safely retreat. He did not stand his ground to defend himself, he pursued.”

To support his argument, he cited one of the standard instructions judges give jurors in cases involving claims of self-defense.

“Before using deadly force, the defendant is required to make all efforts to retreat,” the jury instruction reads, according to Harper.

    Figures, considering its Maryland.

“It is a shame he had to die, but he put himself in that position,” O’Neill said.

‘He’ being Angel and I toatlly agree.
    _______________________________________________________________________
Again returning to my original statement:

Roessler agreed the location of the bullet wound raised some questions for his staff, but he said it did not mean Ibrahimi lied about Angel swinging his arm around in a threatening manner.

    Hmmmmmm…

    Bonecrusher;

    Here’s my answers.

    1) How many times has this store been robbed? According to the report, this was the second time in two weeks and the fourth in 17 months.
    2) How many times has angel robbed a store? Don’t know. That doesn’t matter to me in this case. But good question none-the-less.
    3) How many times has angel robbed this store? (See my #2)
    4) Why should the store owner be forced to retreat instead of using deadly force to protect his property, which was in the process of being stolen via wissin deadly force? It was the threat of deadly force in which the store was robbed. I still see Ibrahimi as justified in retaliation and in trying to take back the store’s possessions.
    5) How long is angels rap sheet? Don’t know but according to the report he had only traffic tickets on his rap sheet..
    6) What about his rap sheet in other states? I don’t know.

As far as he being an illegal alien obviosly he should not have been in the states. I wonder if his wife is an illegal alien as well or could she have been used as an “anchor” to allow Angel to remain as a nillegal resident. Either way, it is amazing how much legal protection illegals get in our country. While no illegal alie should be here, those that do make a better lives for themselves and are good people do not bother me. Scum like Angel really do bother me in being here when they should not.

Amid disturbing signs that the US recovery has stalled, President Barack Obama took a huge gamble in his approach to the debt-ceiling talks last week. Believing he had an understanding with John Boehner, leader of the Republicans in the House of Representatives, he declared he wanted a $4,000bn “grand bargain” on the budget. Barely a day later, Mr Boehner said the deal was off. By Sunday evening, with talks about to resume at the White House, the president’s gambit appeared to have failed.

Boehner called off negotiations because the democrats will not take increasing taxes off the table.

Priscilla Todd took the birds in, hoping a veterinarian would separate them and give them a chance at survival, Salt Lake City’s Deseret News reported.

Couldn’t they have just fried up the birds?

They can also take out the cast of “The Unit’ in a heartbeat second

Hey, don’t disparage actors. I once saw Superman actor Dean Cain, of “Lois & Clark”, contend on American Gladiators and he did extremely well. (That was back when I could stay awake until midnight.) (Also back when that show was actually on. 🙂 )

And while I was watching the Seal Team show tonight, I saw an ad for the show “Man vs Wild” — I don’t watch it — that will include actor Jake Gyllenhaal. I believe he’s the one with the immortal movie line “I wish I knew how to quit you.”

I know one of the gay cowboys/ (MMA fighter?) was on Ocyober Sky and Jake Gyllenhaal is the first actor listed in that movie. So I do believe you know your gay movies. Congrats! 😉

    ‘That’s racist.”

It’s a comedic catchphrase these days, popularized by an online clip from a 2005 TV show Wonder Showzen on MTV2. It’s not as iconic as Gary Coleman’s “What ’chu talkin’ ’bout, Willis?” or Fonzie’s “Ayyyyyy” or even Bart Simpson’s “Don’t have a cow, man.” But what it lacks in pedigree, it makes up for in ubiquity and social relevance.

Across the country, it’s a staple of schoolyards, Internet discussion groups, Twitter, and sitcoms.

For instance, when a character on NBC’s Parks and Recreation explains to a co-worker how to do laundry, he says, “Okay, so you always separate your lights from your darks.”

    She responds, “That’s racist.”

‘That’s Racist’: The accusation becomes a punch line.

It sure has and with that said I must share with you all the recent smash musical hit in our household. Racist Coffee.

    Enjoy!

Just saw this via Human Events.

Leaders of the transnational organized criminal gang Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) even ordered a hit on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in New York.

There are now reports that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Tampa Field Division, ran a gun-running investigation that was walking guns to Honduras using the techniques and tactics identical to Fast and Furious. 1,000 of those guns were sold to MS13 buyers.

Congress gave the ATF $29 million in 2009 including $10 million in stimulus money for “project gunrunner,” the predecessor of “fast and furious.” A year later it got $37 million more to expand gunrunner.

Bold in NOT mine. It’s in the original post. This gun runnnig scheme is simply beyond belief. Perhaps some in the O administration consider MS-13 just as legitimate as the Muslim Brotherhood (or whatever their new name is).

ATF Tampa Office Walked Guns to Honduras and MS13 Gang Members: Paid for by stimulus cash.

The latest Gunrunner post I saw was this: http://sipseystreetirregulars.blogspot.com/2011/07/gunwalker-miscellany-calls-for-special.html . That post lists five other news stories regarding Project Gunrunner.

Also, many here will enjoy this post at Vandervoegh’s blog:

Sean D. Sorrentino’s idea for The Official Project Gunwalker Tee Shirt has been ripped off by World Net Daily. Let WND know what you think.

To be fair, Sorrentino, the mad creditted for originatng the Gunrunner T-Shirts, said:

UPDATE: WND DOES THE RIGHT THING! After a quick email conversation with WND Editor Joseph Farah, he has pulled the shirt from sale and will commence an investigation on Monday when everyone gets back to the office.

Please join me in thanking the WND Editor and CEO for his swift resolution of this issue. Read the update on this post! http://bit.ly/nCcX9G

    The investigation should be tomorrow.

Here’s from Vondervoegh’s first link in my #156 link from Vondervoegh’s Gunrunner post.

Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee says he does not believe Attorney General Eric Holder gave accurate testimony under oath to Congress during the House Judiciary Committee on May 3.

Asked in May when he learned of Operation “Fast and Furious” and “Project Gunrunner,” Holder claimed he ‘probably’ learned of it ‘over the last few weeks.’ In the testy exchange that followed, Issa pointed out that two Americans were killed by weapons associated with the botched operation, and that in the end, no major criminals were brought to justice. Issa also implies that the Department of Justice was deliberately slow-rolling the request for documentation about the program. You can watch the exchange between Holder and Issa here.

Unfortunately for Holder, an April 2, 2009 speech in Cuernavaca, Mexico documented his boasts about Operation Gunrunner to Mexican authorities.

Last week, our administration launched a major new effort to break the backs of the cartels. My department is committing 100 new ATF personnel to the Southwest border in the next 100 days to supplement our ongoing Project Gunrunner, DEA is adding 16 new positions on the border, as well as mobile enforcement teams, and the FBI is creating a new intelligence group focusing on kidnapping and extortion.

    Wow.

    Holder Lied, People Died
