Senator Patty Murray, Chair
Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee
Dear Senator Murray:
For many months now, your colleagues in the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee leadership have engaged in a series of disparagements and ad hominem attacks about us, apparently as part of a concerted political and fundraising strategy. Just recently, Senator Reid wrote in a DSCC fundraising letter that Republicans are trying to “force through their extreme agenda faster than you can say ‘Koch Brothers.’”
So you can imagine my chagrin when I got a letter from you on June 17 asking us to make five-figure contributions to the DSCC. You followed that up with a voicemail* indicating that, if we contributed heavily enough, we would garner an invitation to join you and other Democratic leaders at a retreat in Kiawah Island this September.
I’m hoping you can help me understand the intent of your request because it’s hard not to conclude that DSCC politics have become so cynical that you actually expect people whom you routinely denounce to give DSCC money.
It is troubling that private citizens taking part in the discourse have become the targets of White House and DSCC fundraising missives, and we would certainly encourage you to rethink that approach. Ultimately, I expect voters will see through that and will weigh the issues on the merits alone. But in the meantime, if you could provide me some insight on what exactly you are asking of us and why, I would be most grateful.
Sincerely,
Philip Ellender

You gotta admit, it takes cajones to verbally abuse and beat the crappola out of a couple of rich guys and then hit them up for donations – almost like the Chicago way – (you think that was bad, see what happens if you don’t go along this time…) etc. Be nice to see some Republicans follow Jeff Sessions, Marco Rubio and a couple of others and grow a pair, expose the Democrats plot to increase the debt ceiling for promises that will never be fulfilled, and just stand up for what is right for a change. If a dunce like Patty Murray can show some spine, why can’t our guys?

Brought forward from last nite:
Looks like Rick Santelli over at CNBC agrees with me on the debt ceiling/cut spending issue. That gets my side up to around 5 or 6 people now – do I sense the beginning of a wave sweeping the nation?

Just say “no.” Even a Democrat can understand that (I think). -

I think there’s a considerable number of people on your side on this issue. Unfortunately not many of them appear to be congressmen.

Normally I don’t laugh at the death of anyone but I couldn’t help it this time:
“One more thing,” he said as the drugs began taking effect. Then he shouted twice, “Viva Mexico!” at a Texas prison.
I guess he fancied himself a modern day Emiliano Zapata. Prolly would have been dead a long time ago in Mexico.

G’Morning all
Had a great vacation (oxymoron? Vacation=time off from work, but I’m retired, so how can I take time off?). Lots of fishing, steak grilling, Mexican food eating…….
Funny the OC Thread is about fund raising, I got an Obama letter yesterday.
Enclosed was a 4X6 photo (signed with an autopen)of him with a very studious look with his hand on his chin. Across the front was the statement “I value your ongoing support.” On the reverse was “President Obama cannot keep the Republicans from stopping the progress he has made without his support.” BwaaaHaaaaHaaaa
The 4 page signed letter (same autopen) asked me to give up to $30,800.
BwaaaaaaaaaaHaaaaaaaaaHaaaaa, again.I laughed so hard I nearly peed my pants.

Our government always makes the argument that executing Mexican nationals will lead to mistreatment of our citizens in foreign jails. It’s clearly a scare tactic. But it got me to thinking about how bad Mexican jails are already and why our government never protests that. This is from the State Department website:
Arrests and Notifications: The Mexican government is required by international law to notify the U.S. Embassy or the nearest U.S. consulate promptly when a U.S. citizen is arrested, if the arrestee so requests. In practice, however, depending on where the arrest takes place, this notification can be delayed by months, or may never occur at all, limiting the assistance the U.S. Government can provide. U.S. citizens should promptly identify themselves as such to the arresting officers, and should request that the Embassy or nearest consulate be notified immediately.
Prison Facilities: Prison conditions in Mexico can be extremely poor. In many facilities food is insufficient in both quantity and quality, and prisoners must pay for adequate nutrition from their own funds. Many Mexican prisons provide poor medical care, and prisoners with urgent medical conditions may receive only a minimum of attention. U.S. citizens who are incarcerated in Mexico are sometimes forced to pay hundreds and even thousands of dollars in “protection money” to fellow prisoners. Since the beginning of 2002, the deaths of 35 U.S. citizens in Mexican prisons have been reported, including at least seven apparent homicides.
Prisoner Treatment/Interrogations: Mexico is party to several international anti-torture conventions, and the Mexican Constitution and Mexican law accordingly prohibit torture; however, in its annual report, Mexico’s National Commission on Human Rights documents cases of Mexican security forces seeking to obtain information through torture. Convictions for torture or for any alleged abuses by security forces are rare. Some U.S. citizens have reported being beaten, and even raped while in police custody.
UN treaties. Heh.

EG re debt ceiling: The Rs need to stop being such
pussieswimps about this whole debt crisis. Santelli is correct that the problem is on the spending side. No more out year budget cuts; cut the budget now and cut it deeply; DO NOT RAISE TAXES, FEES OR SURCHARGES.
Places to cut:
1)Dept of Education – 100% cut
2) Dept of Energy – 75% cut
3) Dept of Agriculture 75% cut
4) Welfare – 50% cut
5) welfare housing subsidies 50% cut
6) Mooooochelle O’s personal staff 90% cut
7) Whitehouse staff – 50% cut
8) congressional staff 40% cut
9) EPA 60% cut
10) BATF 80% cut
11) ethanol subsidy – 100% cut
12) ethanol mandate in fuel – 100% cutThe above cuts will free up billions right now and continue the savings well into the future, not to mention freeing up the economy to actually create real jobs. Those real jobs will increase the revenue to the treasury and the cuts will decrease expenses just what the Doctor ordered to reduce the deficit.

executing Mexican nationals will lead to mistreatment
How about shipping thousands of guns to the Mexican cartels so they could kill hundreds of people, including US Border Agent Brian Terry. You don’t suppose that has any effect on our relations, do you?

Michele Bachmann said Obama regards the Tea Party as a bunch of toothless hillbillies.
What’s wrong with that? Hillbillies live in the country on gated property, pay no taxes and have lots of liquidity.
That makes them just a dental plan away from living like hedge fund managers.

Our government always makes the argument that executing Mexican nationals will lead to mistreatment of our citizens in foreign jails.
Here’s an irony for you:
If San Antonio cops had been allowed to ask the citizenship status of this guy when they arrested him, they would have known he was a “Mexican national” at that time and would have known to contact the consulate. It was San Antonio’s Sanctuary City policy that prevented them from doing that.

He may have not realized he was a Mexican national at the time he was arrested. He had been in the country since he was two years old. I also question why he/his attorney(s) waited until now to bring this whole issue up.

Well I have to give them credit. They didn’t say “unexpected” at all in the article. They danced around it, but didn’t actually say it.
Well, they aren’t too worried about it anyway, from the looks of it.
Despite the fact that joblessness has altered many an election and brought a halt to more than one administration.
Despite the fact that when Reagan and Bush were in the White House, all we heard about was homeless people and the poor.
They don’t need rotor on Marine One anymore. The spin machine alone would get that puppy off the ground.

And on the subject of joblessness —
We ran an ad in the Greensheet for a helper for my hubby. It didn’t require any special skills, just someone capable of lifting a certain weight, the ability to dig and handle equipment safely, and the willingness to do a variety of tasks. I have been inundated like never before with people needing work. Some of their stories are heartbreaking, having been searching for work for weeks or months. One man is going through a divorce and is giving his house to his wife because he can no longer afford the payments on it. Some of the people calling used to own their own businesses, which are now shut down, and they are going from employers to hopeful job seekers.
I am not exaggerating when I say that since the ad came out July 5th, I have been taking an average of 15-20 calls an hour, eight to ten hours a day (and a few at night), every day. Some people just send us emails. It’s been difficult to get anything else done, and I have a list of numbers that I’ve missed because I was talking to another applicant. I am going to try to give each of them the dignity of a return call. I never expected such an avalanche of responses.
We talk about politics a lot here, and there are a lot of nasty names thrown around, and we get a little heated at times. I’d like for everyone to take a moment and pray for all of these men and women who are so desperately working to find a way to feed their families or keep their homes. There are real faces and names behind these statistics, and some of them are truly, truly desperate. Some of them have done everything right and still been mowed down by the economy.
I have never felt such a quiet rage as I feel right now. Every time I hear about how the “jobless numbers don’t matter” or “we are in recovery” or “we need to continue the work we began” from this blasted administration, I want to rip someone’s throat out. These people don’t give a rat’s wiss about the real problem. And I don’t ever want to hear about how the Democrat party is “for the poor people”. Wissin’ liars, they are.

Another brilliant column by the estimable Walter Russell Mead at the American Interest.
And this is one Tedtam can especially identify with.
To get these jobs, we have to change the way our cities work. Essentially, we have created urban environments in which the kind of enterprises that often hire the poor — low margin, poorly capitalized, noisy, smelly, dirty, informally managed without a long paper trail — can’t exist. The kind of metal bashing repair shops that fill the cities of the developing world are almost impossible to operate here. Plumbers, carpenters, electricians, pushcart vendors and day care operators need licenses; construction work has to comply with elaborate guidelines and city bureaucracies disgorge the required permits slowly and reluctantly.
I know of a day care center here in our ultra-glamorous borough of Queens that wanted to expand the services it provided to mostly low income families. To do that the center needed to use a church basement. The last I heard the staff had been trying for several years to get a definitive answer out of the city bureaucracy about whether this would be possible and under what conditions. They had hired an “expediter” (a person who specializes in getting New York City bureaucrats to act slightly less slothfully than usual) for a cost they could not afford and still had no answer.
As a member of a coop board I have learned that the building I live in frequently spends months and even years simply trying to get questions answered from the city about how to proceed with needed repairs. Rich people and established businesses can survive this kind of thing; small businesses with no capital cushion and untrained, perhaps poorly educated proprietors cannot — but these are the only people who can generate the jobs the urban poor so desperately need.

The jobs report came out yesterday for June and the American economy created a whopping 18,000 jobs in a nation of 320 milion people.
Instapundit is on a heavy roll today. He must have 20 posts this morning on the unemployment figures.

The destruction of lower income society at the hands of white liberals is devastating. Ann Coulter blasts single motherhood and the damage to the children as a result.
Various studies have shown that children raised by a single mother comprise about 70 percent of juvenile murderers, delinquents, teenaged mothers, drug abusers, dropouts, suicides and runaways. Imagine an America with 70 percent fewer of these social disorders and you will see what liberals’ destruction of marriage has wrought.
A 1990 study by the (liberal) Progressive Policy Institute showed that, after controlling for single motherhood, the difference in black and white crime rates disappeared.
Meanwhile, adopted kids, on average, turn out better than even biological kids raised in two-parent families.
Of course, there aren’t a lot of studies of adopted children because they aren’t constantly mugging us. They’re too busy running Oracle (Larry Ellison), the District of Columbia (Anthony Williams), or fantastic political websites, like “Big Government” (Andrew Breitbart).
Ah, those pesky things called facts. When confronted with same, the libs never seem to take the blame for the destruction that is a direct result of their actions. Mayhaps that will change real soon.

As I say many times, four things will keep you (and your family) out of poverty:
1. finish high school
2. get a job – any job
3. wait until you are married to have kids
4. stay out of jailYou may not get filthy rich, but you will likely end up being fairly comfortable at the very least.

#18 OTL. Beautiful video collage. An accomplished dressage rider and accomplished horses. Together they make it look so easy–which it is once both are accomplished. Not so getting there–that is work, but a labor of love.
#19 mharper42. Don’t have any pictures of elephants on our place. 🙂 The fountain was down two gallons this morning, so I filled it. It loses around a gallon a day to evaporation and whoever drinks at night.
The past two days Richmond and Rosenberg got almost 4″, and we got a spit only. All went just south of the river. Arrrggh.

That’s on top of yet another downward revision to prior data – in this case April & May of 44,000 jobs.Contributing to the weak tenor of the report, the department said the economy created 44,000 fewer jobs in April and May than previously thought.
So the net would be a decline of 26,000.

Wow. That’s ……. unexpected 😉

Tedtam’s eye-opening experience in listing the job opening should shake all of us out of the satisfaction we might have about the comforting economic security Texas enjoys. It ain’t optimum by a long shot; we’re just–by God’s grace–not as desperate as the rest of the country–other than likely North Dakota. Thinking about this makes the rage level shoot up when listening to the ignorant/arrogant BS spewing from the Administration in DC. Pantywaist Pubbies beware. We are watching you.

On the subject of unemployment, it is fairly bad here in the NYC/north NJ region, but it is much, much worse in other places.
No matter what it may seem like in your personal circumstances, Texas has it better than anywhere.
The financial and securities industry is to this area what the oil & gas business is to Texas. As the O&G industry is not just fat cat oil zillionaires, but millions of people fulfilling all the roles it takes to make the system work, so also is the financial world of Wall Street made up of millions of people performing tasks to make it all happen every day. Everytime a broker, investment banker or trader loses his job on Wall Street, at least 3.5 people lose their jobs – taxi drivers, waiters, dry cleaners, clothing salesmen, etc, etc.

You would think by the likes of typical leftist agitprop in the seething transnational swamps of coastal Massachusetts, the very idea of American patriotism would have long been in the grave.
Had you been there and stopped in the grocery in Cape Cod on July 1st at 5:00 PM, you would have seen this:

Yeah, talking to a buddy I grew up with in Toledo, he says there are places in town that I would no longer recognize as the middle-class, working neighborhoods I remember from my youth. Lots of neighborhoods turned into ghost towns.

#43 No doubt thanks to Boo Ben Konop, the JS of Toledo.
Every time I hear that name it reminds me of a poem I had to learn in CCE classes:
Abou Ben Adhem (may his tribe increase!)
Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace,
And saw, within the moonlight in his room,
Making it rich, and like a lily in bloom,
An angel writing in a book of gold.
Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold,
And to the Presence in the room he said
“What writest thou?”—The vision raised its head,
And with a look made of all sweet accord,
Answered “The names of those who love the Lord.”
“And is mine one?” said Abou. “Nay, not so,”
Replied the angel. Abou spoke more low,
But cheerly still, and said “I pray thee, then,
Write me as one that loves his fellow men.”The angel wrote, and vanished. The next night
It came again with a great wakening light,
And showed the names whom love of God had blessed,
And lo! Ben Adhem’s name led all the rest. -

If every committee did such impressive work, committees wouldn’t have a bad name.
Four hundred years ago, King James of England commissioned several dozen scholars to update and improve on prior translations of the Bible into English. Their handiwork — known as the King James Version — put an indelible stamp on the English language and on the Anglo-American mind.
It sure did and this article is a very good summary on the impact of the King James version of the Bible upon English-speaking societies.
The prodigious task took roughly six years. Just printing it was an undertaking. Initially, a typo appeared on average once every ten pages of text. One edition was called the “Wicked Bible” when the word “not” was accidentally left out of the admonition, “Thou shalt not commit adultery.”
LOL! On a more serious note:
Typographical struggles aside, the translation was inspired and came to seem almost unimprovable. It culled from prior English translations, forging a synthesis that rose at times to the level of poetry. As Benson Bobrick notes in his history of the Bible in English, Wide as the Waters, the King James Version stayed true to Hebraic turns of expression and kept language that was already archaic in the 17th century.
All of this gave it a majestic lift that swept away all competition in both England and America. One historian has written that “its victory was so complete that its text acquired a sanctity properly ascribable only to the unmediated voice of God; to multitudes of English-speaking Christians it has seemed little less than blasphemy to tamper with its words.”
An archbishop of Dublin scandalized a conference of clergy in the 19th century when he said of the King James Version, “Never forget, gentlemen, that this is not the Bible.” They needed reminding it was only a translation of the Bible.
The ascendant King James Version had a profound influence on the language. As Alister McGrath writes in his book In the Beginning, “It did not follow literary trends; it established them.” It made commonplaces of phrases that we have forgotten are biblical in origin: “to fall flat on his face,” “to pour out one’s heart,” “under the sun,” “sour grapes,” “pride goes before a fall,” “the salt of the earth,” and on and on. Without it, McGrath reckons, “there would have been no Paradise Lost, no Pilgrim’s Progress, no Handel’s Messiah, no Negro Spirituals, and no Gettysburg Address.”

It seems this admin, as well as other D admins, makes a concerted effort to NOT ENFORCE existing gun laws/fully prosecute those who use guns in crime/let them out of prison way too early in order to generate public outrage, therefore giving them cover to enact far more draconian gun control legislation. The pattern is the same, create or magnify a problem, wait for public outcry, enact law that public would never have accepted but for the creation of the problem in the first place.
Gun walker is an excellent example:
1) Refused to stop straw buyers of semi-auto rifles, knowing they were going across border illegally. Add to this they were illegally purchased; illegal and were flagged as illegal under current law.
2) The ensuing/escalating violence across border caused loss of US agents lives
3) Now the push for more stringent laws due to outrage at failure to stop.Had they enforced existing law, the buyers would have been busted and no guns across border; escalation of gun violence across border would not have been as great, therefore no outcry, and as a result they would not have the perceived cover to tighten restrictions on legitimate gun owners.
Remember that the objective is to take the guns out of the hands of legitimate owners. -

I seem to recall that the rooooskies were not exactly, shall we say, dependable on holding up their end of the construction phase of the ISS. Weren’t they behind in payments as well as producing their modules? Have they paid their debt yet? Are we collecting interest on that debt?
. . . . .inquiring minds want to know. -

Very interesting. But I hate the dry female voice narration, which sounds like all the movies where a female voice counts down the seconds till a doomsday event. No mention of what I thought was good evidence that the BOP had been damaged during an earlier test that gone awry due to a mistake made by someone on the rig.

Democrats seemed to be obsessed with corporate jets and yachts again. They tried this back in the 90s when they passed a “luxury tax”. Thousands of manufacturing jobs were lost and the amount of money we paid the unemployed was higher than the revenue generated by the tax. Damn those rich people! They’re not playing fair.

The central theme(s) to our current problems are:
1) The wissin lib-terd-nozzle Ds keep insisting that we use the tax code for social engineering instead of revenue generation
2) THe wissin lib-terd-nozzle Ds keep insisting that we let them buy votes with tax dollars
3) The Ds don’t understand that they spend too much wissin money
4) Joe McCarthy was absolutely right about commy infiltration our govt, schools and entertainment
5) Lower tax rates produce more revenue to the treasury because it allows the economy to grow; so the govt gets a smaller portion of a much bigger pie yielding more pie to the govt. Libterds never can seem to understand this point, also it dramatically interferes with #1 -

Some of the comments remind me of a local ad I saw for electricians. I don’t remember the exact wording, but it ended with this; ‘Only those actually working as electricians in the last six months will have applications taken. Estimators, project managers, or engineers will not be accepted.’

This is the website for the goons who ‘work’ for Boeing.
As of yesterday, they had a piece bashing Obama for bashing corporate jets. The same page champions the NLRB for dictating where Boeing can build jets. I thought the irony pretty funny. Looks like they took down the bash Obama bit. Boeing is going to be stuck in the NLRB’s administrative law racket for years, or until they cry uncle.

Well I witnessed the last Shuttle Launch today. It was great, the clouds started clearing around 9 and although it was still overcast there were several clear spots. The shuttle went behind the clouds at about 3000′ and then came back out of another opening and disappeared again about the time it was turning downrange. Later in the afternoon it clouded back up and and rained a little. It must have been “devine intervention” because we had a 70% chance of rain. Yesterday everyone thought that it would cancel because it rained most of the day with one “frog strangler” around noon. Luckily we were it the KSC Visitor center at the time. FWIW: I had a great time, Wednesday evening, Pre-Launch Reception, Thursday, Awards Breakfast, then to the KSC tour and Visitor Center. To the launch today then back to the Pratt & Whitney/Rocketdyne Post-Launch Reception with a well stocked bar including champagne. The Awards Breakfast was for our company only and the one today was for all the contractors.

Scientists have finally demonstrated that sex is useful.
A team from Indiana University found that worms that have sex were better able than asexual worms to stay one evolutionary step ahead of dangerous parasites.
The finding, published in the journal Science, provides the first direct evidence that sexual reproduction improves a species’ ability to survive in a fast-changing environment. And it suggests that parasites, including bacteria and viruses, are one reason species developed sexual reproduction in the first place.
Obviously avoiding viruses through having sex doesn’t apply to humans. And do the scientists (following their own line of thinking) think the lack of being immortal may have influenced the development of sexual reproduction?
Scientists say sex has been a mystery because it doesn’t make much sense, from a biological perspective.
For one thing, this approach to reproduction requires males, which consume resources even though they may not contribute much beyond their DNA, says Levi Morran of Indiana University, the new study’s lead author.
They have no idea what they are talking about.
OK, Off to watch a flick on the big screen with the home theater system crancked up. After that I think I’ll go for a cruise around town in my F-350 pick up (only because there’s no 450 models available).

60 & 62,
Construction is about hustle and experience. You don’t need the brainiest of electricians to do construction…just the guy who can run conduit and make terminations fast and accurately. Some office pogues might have been able to do that in the past, but those are skills that are quickly lost if not used.
I have been a Construction Site Supervisor and there are no gold stars awarded for having the smartest crew. You do get stars for coming in under budget, ahead of time, and without killing or maiming someone.
I am also an Electrical Engineer and most EE’s could not function as an apprentice on a Construction Site. I understand why the ad was written the way it was.

Super Dave – glad you got to see one. I’ve been supremely lucky to see five or six from about 40 miles south of the Cape over the years. I just seemed to time my trips right. Three of them were at night and that is spectacular. The most interesting one was flying into the Orlando airport just as it was launching. What a sight!

This is old news. They were teaching this decades ago when I was taking biology classes at UT. You get LOTS more variability in the offspring when you mix the genes from 2 parents. With more variation, better chance that a few will survive no matter what new threat pops up.
But there’s nothing wrong with publishing new cases that demonstrate this.

Hambone, Back in the early 90’s we took the kids on their first Disney World trip, the Shuttle was due to launch on a Monday and I started to drive over to the Banana River causeway and watch it, BUTT they were prone to delay and I only had 5 DAYS so we didn’t go, sure enough, we were standing in line @ Disney World and saw the Shuttle take off! I couldn’t believe how neat it was from 45 miles away. I didn’t count that as watching a launch, but you know, it was pretty neat, so maybe I’ve seen two? 😉

Oh, and did I say traffic?! It took me 3 hours to get from Cocoa Beach to Orlando this afternoon, this was after making 2 U-turns and starting over. I wound up taking I 95 north to State 50 then over to Christmas FL and turning north on CR 420 until I got close. The 528 toll road was bumper to bumper from I95 to Orlando, with the traffic moving 6 miles in 35 minutes, (ax me how I know this?). 😉

A former Florida assistant state attorney who lost her job over teaching about the Founding Fathers and the Constitution settled her case for an undisclosed amount Thursday against the Florida state attorney who fired her.
KrisAnne Hall was fired last year after participating in a number of political speaking engagements, including at tea party rallies and on talk radio, in which she discussed her originalist views of the Constitution. Her boss, State Attorney Robert “Skip” Jarvis, said he received a complaint about her activities and gave what Hall described as an “ultimatum,” telling her to choose between her speaking engagements and her job.
“I told him I could not make that choice. I believe that my First Amendment right is my right and I would not stop speaking,” Hall said in an interview with The Blaze.
Hall subsequently filed a federal lawsuit after her dismissal, alleging her rights had been violated and Jarvis had no standing to order her to stop speaking on her own time. Both parties agreed to settle the case Thursday.
Hall would not discuss details of the settlement, except to say she was very satisfied and had her attorney fees paid. She will not be returning to the state attorney’s office.

Well, we’re back im Alabama, left Orlando and meandered up this way, taking the senic route. Since we weren’t in a big hurry and didn’t know how bad the traffic would be on the Florida Turnpike, we headed up through Apopka, Leesburg, Ocala and stayed on US 27/Alt27 all the way up to Perry Florida, then US 98 to Newport, next, Pig Trails to Bristol, crossed the Chattahoochee at Blountstown then turned north and headed to Alabama. If you’re ever in that part of the world, US 27 is a neat road, 4 lane from Ocala to Perry with only a few small towns to go through and like most roads in Florida, it is mostly straight as an arrow. US 27 along with US 17 and US 41 used to be the Yankee expressways for the northerners coming to Florida. On US 27 you’ll see a lot of beautiful horse ranchs with huge pastures and barns with all the board fences. US 98 is only a 2 lane here and goes through the Apalachicola National Forest with all it’s spring feed rivers/creeks. Hey, I made it in 7 hours, WITHOUT ever getting on a freeway! 😀
