Oh my gosh, look at the time! I got up and took out the trash, conferred with my Hubby on business before he left, watered the garden, started the laundry, conferred some more (his helper quit today), hung up the laundry, came inside and got my computer and tea, and made it up to the office (luuuv my commute!). Once here, I turned on the radio and a/c, plugged in my computer, and found out that my cohorts in crime are STILL sleeping in!
Therefore, this is truly an OPEN TOPIC thread. I must begin my real work, and don’t have time to put together a coherent OC comment.
I hope someone does something truly magnificent for July Fourth weekend. I’m not good at the long posts…
I’ve cleared off the couch, there’s still some tea left in the frig, and just don’t lose the remote in the cushions, if you don’t mind. Come on in!

Barf Kitty is actually cute right now – she’s snuggled up under a blanket on the couch, with just an ear poking out.
In my next life, I’m coming back as a house cat. If I were a dog, I’d have to fetch crap.

The Danish.
Doing the work that others won’t do – kinda :
Denmark on Friday approved a decision to re-establish permanent customs checkpoints at its borders, removing the last hurdle to a plan aimed at stopping crime and illegal immigration but which has been strongly criticized in Europe as violating visa-free travel rules.

Reason Number 4,332 why I’m glad I’m a Christian and not a Muslim:
Man who refuses to pray should be killed
Where are all of those liberals when you need them?

Well I’ve been real busy of late, but the “Bound Too’s” came to frution earlier this week and I’m now the proud owner of a red/white Sea Ray 205 Sport complete with the wake board tower. 😀 She’s powered by a 5L 220 HP Mercuriser. it’s hard to believe that I went for about 3 years without a boat. I’ve been boating all my life and have owned at least one boat continuously since I was 17. My 18′ Sea Ray was destroyed in a fire in a storage shed a few years ago.

#11 KatFish The kids are real excited, I didn’t tell them that I was getting it and on Tuesday I called The Boy and told him to come by my house, he couldn’t believe it. I then sent a phone pix to Daughter. The young-uns were the main reason I went ahead and got the boat. It will be our family boat. 😉

Clothilde met a really good looking guy at a music festival in Breaux Bridge. After a couple of dates, he proposed to her. She said,’But we don’t know anything about each other.’
He said, ‘That’s all right, we’ll learn about each other as we go along.’
So she consented, they were married, and off they went on a honeymoon at a very nice resort.
One morning they were lying by the pool, when he got up off of his towel, climbed up to the 10 meter board and did a two and a half tuck, followed by three rotations in the pike position, at which point he straightened out and cut the water like a knife.
After a few more demonstrations, he came back and lay down on the towel.
She said, ‘That was incredible!’
He said, ‘I used to be an Olympic diving champion. You see, I told you we’d learn more about each other as we went along. So she got up, jumped in the pool and started swimming laps in the pool.
After seventy -five laps she climbed out of the pool, lay down on her towel, and was hardly out of breath.
He said, ‘That was incredible! Were you an Olympic endurance swimmer?’
‘No,’ she said, ‘I was a hooker in Thibodaux, but I worked both sides of Bayou Lafourche. 😀 -

Good morning Hamsters. Not quite so pleasant 73 with lightly wearable moist air and ground mist. Two hawks alternately swoop low through the yards and pastures, in some cases barely clearing the heads of cattle egrets roaming through on the ground. The Keystone Kops buzzards haven’t bumbled in yet. Plenty of billowy clouds drift past on a SE breeze and tease even more than yesterday. Scattered showers is a very elastic weather term it seems.
Fort Bend County’s burn and fireworks bans remain in effect. In the west end of the county Pecan Grove Plantation’s fireworks display is kaput; Fulshear’s display is too, but they’ve substituted a laser show. Rosenberg had previously cancelled theirs. And we’re again watering the elephants at our place to keep it green around the house and barn. Last week’s rain greened some of the pasture we couldn’t water, but it won’t last long.
The Richmond Fire Department rescued at cow stuck in the mud of an almost dried-up shallow pond on the undeveloped portion of the Del Webb Sweetgrass subdivision in Richmond on Wednesday. She was fatigued, stressed, and overheated so her rescuers rinsed her to cool her before urging her up the bank and out of the pond, then monitored her until she safely returned to the herd. That must have been quite a sight for the retirement-age new residents of the development.
Y’all enjoy the weekend.

G’Morning all you slaves to the clock. Fishing was OK this morning, a few trout, no redfish. Still got 4 days, tho. The BIG Rockport Art Festival is Sat. & Sun. so I ‘magine Dee is gonna buy something.
Super Dave, glad you got another boat. Remember, a home without a boat is only half a home.
BTW, g’morning Sally. We were on the road and couldn’t say hi.
Back to fishing and goofing off. Eat your hearts out. 🙂

June 30, 2011 at 1:29 pmI have a VERY personal interest in this topic, so I think it’s important that this information be shared freely:
While Act! For America may or may not be a suspect organization, the Philadelphia Inquirer, along with the NYT has done some serious investigative work on Gulen Schools. They are being investigated by the FBI. No amount of equivocation from the school’s website can make the two journalistic and one Law Enforcement investigations something that is not a fact. Whether or not there is any fire, there sure is plenty of smoke.
The person most responsible for bringing Gulen Schools into the media is a woman named Sibel Edmunds, a former FBI Translator, who is also a writer for Veterans Today. She is described on several websites as an “FBI Whistleblower” and saw fame among the denizens of DKos and DU during the Bush administration due to allegations she made regarding the FBI Translators unit and information she claims they provided the FBI prior to 9/11 that warned of the attack, but was ignored. Some of the allegations she averred made Ashcroft and others look bad.
She has a blog called “Boiling Frogs” where she has posted on Gulen schools, especially her experiences with them in Turkey and as a Translator with the FBI. Of interest to some is that Gulen Schools has hired Karen Hughes to run their Public Relations and to lobby for education funding from the state of Texas. Hughes is very close to GWB, and currently runs the PR campaigns of Speaker Joe Straus. I have no doubt that it is Hughes influence you see in the responses Harmony Schools is making to the media reporting. How it might affect the FBI investigation is another story.
Gulen Schools is receiving more than 100 million of Texas’ Tax Dollars.

BTW;
According to media sources, the FBI is investigating whether or not employees of Gulen Schools are making donations to the Gulen Organization overseas, if their wages are being given them in order to make those donations, and the alleged abused of visas to bring employees from Turkey and other Middle Eastern nations over to the US to work in the schools.

Is there anything aside from insinuation and innuendo to show that Harmony is a “Gulen School”?

Silly me, I thought America was still a place where one was presumed innocent until proven guilty. Apparently some are willing to make an exception to that if the accused doesn’t meet the accuser’s list of accepted religions. So here’s my question to you: when this investigation concludes and Harmony is shown to be exactly what they claim they are, will an apology from their accusers be forthcoming?

#28 – Definitely a fair question – someone get me those 30 hour days and 9 day weeks then I’ll have time to peruse a veritable ocean of news links like THESE
might there be a real story aka smoking gun in any of this huge pile of articles?
I, for one, don’t have time for that much reading……………..so I suppose I’ll wait for someone who DOES have that much reading time to invest………..

Fortunately there are some people with sense out there.
But one conservative protector of the endowment, the Permanent School Fund, says the criticism of Harmony is unfounded.
“There is a lot of misinformation, a certain level of fear and a small helping of bigotry that needs to go away,” said State Board of Education member David Bradley, R-Beaumont.
Bradley said he would be the “first to sound the alarm” if there were anything to be alarmed about. But the board has not received substantive complaints from parents of the 16,000 children that attend any of the 33 Harmony campuses across the state, he said.
“The only thing these guys are guilty of are high scores and being Turkish,” Bradley said.
Exactly right.

Dood;
That’s a bit of the battle I’ve been fighting for a while, too. Welcome to the fight. Hope that your position is not as mis-characterized as mine has been—its not a lot of fun. As far as this goes, Harmony is run by the Cosmos Foundation, which is an arm of the Gulen Organization. I just provided the information, and will allow others to make their own decisions. Some of Edmunds’ allegations seem credible, others seem way out there.

doooooode: Yesterday, this was part of my comment #72about the Harmony school:
If there is anything other than a statement from Harmony (kind of like the team captain telling us that his team is #1) that would/could bolster their position I will listen, otherwise I take the concept of taquiyya and consider the source.
A careful reading of this does not render an automatic guilty verdict. Further I have demonstrated that I am willing to look objectively at additional information, should that be presented. I did not accuse Harmony of engaging in taquiyya, what I said is that it is a moooooslim foundational precept that can not be ignored. If those who run Harmony are mooooslim, then taquiyya is a very real concern; it does not guarantee that it is taking place, but to ignore it is foolish.
If I am forced to choose which is telling the truth, and I have only statements from the mooooslim team captain and one who has spent her life exposing the horrors of islam, I am going to side with the exposer of islam. In this case, the exposer, ACT – Bridgitte Gabriel is a devout Christian, and her faith forbids bearing false witness, that can not be said with any credibility about the other side. -

Come on now. Walk into a crowd and throw a penny. It will hit a dozen people who claim to be devout Christians. Half of them will be habitual liars. Your religious heritage is no indication of your truth-telling abilities.

Federal appeals court 3 judge panel has their head up there collective/each other’s rear-ends.
Detroit— Michigan’s ban on using race and gender as a factor in admission to public colleges and universities was overturned today by a federal appeals court, which said the voter-approved measure harms minorities and is unconstitutional.
The 2-1 decision struck down Proposal 2, the 2006 law that had forced the University of Michigan and other state schools to revise their admission policies. The judges ruled that the law violates the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment. The ban prohibited the schools from considering race or gender in admissions. Does that mean that racist and sexist things like class rank, GPA and SAT scores are used to determine admissability? I guess that 2 of the 3 judges just feel that some people/races/genders/ are just more equal than others.
/spits, cusses fumes.
In my not terribly humble opinion, those judges need to be disbarred and banned from ever collecting a publicly funded paycheck for life. -

#36 Couchmaster:
Your religious heritage is no indication of your truth-telling abilities.
That is correct, Tim McVeigh had a Christian heritage, but he was no practicing Christian. I don’t really think that you can say that BG is not a devout practitioner of her faith now can you. In your faith as in mine, lying to anyone is a sin, just as it is in hers. In the moooooslim faith lying to a non-mooooslim is not a sin and in fact it is encouraged.
A faithful Christian/Jew does not lie, an unfaithful one may but not necessarily; a faithful mooooslim will lie, an unfaithful moooslim????
I try to weigh all the relevant factors and the fact that lying is part of the mooooooslim faith is darned significant. -

We just got back from Florida. I’m still on a adrenaline high despite my getting almost no sleep last night due to the drive. Destin beaches are unbelievably gorgeous and although I’ve seen that area before I’ve appretiated the area much more this go around than previously. That said, being home is really nice. Just enjoy my home and three very happy dogs. Youngest Son will be getting baptized tomorrow so we’ll have family come in tonight and tomorrow. When it’s time for them to go Oldest Son will likely run off with his grandparents on his mother’s side to New Mexico for a week. We’re still tryng to work out how to get him back. We shall see.

As far as this goes, Harmony is run by the Cosmos Foundation, which is an arm of the Gulen Organization. I just provided the information, and will allow others to make their own decisions.
Fair enough, but if you’re going to provide information it should be accurate, complete and not out of context. No information is better than inaccurate information. The Cosmos Foundation doesn’t exactly “run” Harmony in the day to day sense.
I don’t know if you can relate to this or not, but I see it similarly to the relationship between a scout troop and their charter organization. On paper, the charter organization is the head of the troop. In reality though, the charter organization has virtually nothing to do with the activities or decisions made by the troop. I’m a pretty active committee member of our troop and I’ve never even personally met our charter org rep. Our Scoutmaster has never met her either.

Neither does NBC “run” MSNBC in the “day to day” sense.
Whatever their affiliation, any organization that gets $100 million tax dollars and is lobby represented by such a powerful and well connected individual should be looked into. Any organization that gets $100 million tax dollars and is the subject of two FBI investigations, doubly so.

With IMF-Frenchy released on bond, I am reminded that someone, I think it was Michael Savage, predicted it would turn out to be an error, or hysterical witch-hunt is what he might have called it.
I thought the charge would hold up myself but I’ve been wrong lots of times.

I don’t know Ms. Gabriel. In fact I never heard of her or Harmony Schools until yesterday. I don’t know anything about the issue (except that Joe Straus is apparently somehow pulling the strings). I’m not making any personal judgement until I know more.
But there are a couple of things I do know:
1. There have been a lot of lies told in the name of Christianity
2. We are ALL sinners -

So look to your heart’s content. Harmony has fully expressed their willingness to go along with the investigation. That makes it no less a witch hunt.

Glenn Beck’s alsoways had a favorable opinion of Texas so no surprise e ‘s gonna move to Dallas. I’m just surprised he’s leasing a home and not buying one here.
I just spotted this on Hot Air regarding Glenn Beck and family being attacked at the park:
To Whom It May Concern:
Just a quick FYI -saw your article on Mr. Beck and his numerous FALSE claims about the way that he was treated at Bryant Park last night. Myself and several of my friends were seated immediately behind Mr. Beck & co (have pictures) and I can tell you that while the crowd was certainly not *thrilled* that he had shown up, his family was left completely alone, and for the most part he was too. Conversely, it was his security detail (two body guards) that seemed to be unnecessarily prickly with the crowd, scolding myself and my friends for acrobatics and other harmless activities taking place well before the movie started, and contributing to a considerably less relaxed atmosphere than is typically experienced during BPMN (I’ve been going for about six years now).
It was my friend that spilled the glass of wine on Tanya -and I can assure you that it was a complete accident. A happy one, to be sure, but nonetheless a complete and utter accident. As soon as the wine spilled (and I question how Tanya became soaked from a half glass of wine) apologies were made and my friends pretty much scrambled to give Tanya & co napkins -no doubt aware that it would look terrible and that their actions could be perceived as purposeful. No words were exchanged after that, as I think that it became pretty clear to Beck & co that my friends and I were doing everything in our capacity to help clean the “mess”.
I‘m sure it’s unnecessary to point out the hypocrisy in Glen’s statements that we were being hateful. I can assure him that we don’t need his sympathy. Incidentally, none of us have made a career of “spewing hate” on the radio, or any other media platform. We live our lives intolerant only of those who don’t tolerate: We have chosen New York as our city for that very reason. We do things like go to Bryant Park Movie Night, and vote to legalize gay marriage. We don’t taunt Glen, or his family. And we certainly don’t waste our wine, even on Tanya.
Thanks, and please let me know if you have further questions.

Hmm. Twitter also turned up tweets from friends, suggesting she “accidentally” spill something on him. Which, of course, her friend “accidentally” did.
According to another website, Piscitell is “a twenty-something who likes to think of herself as a member of the creative underclass,” who, “in between panic attacks and espresso-fueled internet benders,” “likes to write short stories and sometimes poetry.” I include this only because that same description could apply pretty nearly to me … and I would never tweet what she tweeted — not even about, say, Keith Olbermann or an equivalently liberal talk show host. In fact, I probably would have introduced myself and tried to strike up a friendly conversation. But that’s just me.

That the organization is even tangentially connected to a Muslim Religious organization should be troublesome. That there’s enough probable cause to instigate two investigations makes it doubly so.
And I’ve never been impressed when the subject of a Federal Investigation comes forward in the press and claims to be fully co-operating with it. I can’t recall any that have claimed they weren’t going to co-operate at all.

If indeed that is all there is to it, math instruction, I have no problems with it. What happens to the profits this school generates, do they get funneled into the jihad network, do they go to building more schools, do they just line the pockets of some Turk? Like I said, there needs to be more evidence to make a sound judgement either way.

Boney, the school does not generate profits. Charter schools are not that much different than any other public school in that regard, except that the employees make even less than their traditional public school counterparts. The teachers most likely do frivolous stuff with their pay like buying food and other luxury items like that.

My kids have attended for 3 years now (4th coming up). We are a Christian family with a significant involvement in our church. Neither kid has ever told me anything to indicate that any particular religious belief is being presented by Harmony. I know many of the administration and teachers personally. I’ve broken bread with them and had them in my home. I know like God knows that the allegations against the school are absurd. I am through discussing this now.

The Star Wars-esque scenario could happen by 2012, Carter says… or it could take longer. The explosion could also cause a neutron star or result in the formation of a black hole 1300 light years from Earth, reports news.com.au.
It actually happened around 712 AD

I know like God knows that the allegations against the school are absurd. I am through discussing this now.
Major point here:
The allegations are not made towards the school per se.
They are made against the parent organization, and the organization one more level above that. The taking of wages to send overseas to a religious organization could be analogous to Union Dues, or tithing. Either way, however, it is illegal without the proper reporting. It may actually ensue that a favor is being done for the employees in that they may be able to keep all of the wages they earn. Likewise, the allegation of visa abuse is serious, but as with illegal immigrants from south of our border, the good teacher who is in the country illegally is still here illegally regardless of the ability to teach, the subject matter taught, or how pleasant they are to break bread with.

I took it in the spirit I believe you intended it: fact seeking. The fact is that the school is a non-profit organization just like any other public school. I have no problem providing facts. What I do have a problem with is a witch-hunt fueled by religious bigotry, and that is not something I think is a problem with you.

What makes you assume Harmony is paying them anything? Your question is akin to “do you still beat your wife, fat albert?”.

Just started “Bailout Nation” by Barry Ritholtz last night. Very interesting and well-written (at least what I’ve read so far). He makes a very valid differentiation between FDR’s New Deal and the modern day reaction to market crashes. The New Deal was all about keeping the general population working and fed as compared to modern day bailouts where corporations are kept solvent and the general population is for the most part left to fend for itself. That’s not to defend the effectiveness of The New Deal; I don’t believe that is his intent at all. The point is to differentiate between why and where the “rescues” were / are implemented. What we do now is to privatize gains but socialize losses for corporations. Very different. Hat tip to Low-rents for his recent links to Barry Ritholtz’s blog – which is a good daily read BTW.

The federal decision to stop deportation proceedings against a Venezuela-born New Jersey man who legally married his same-sex partner in the United States — effectively recognizing gay marriage — is an “abuse of executive authority” by the Obama administration, immigration experts told FoxNews.com.
Ya think? Especially after O said his administration will continue to enforce DOMA.

Rubio tells us that he will respond to Obama’s recent press conference, where the president reveled in class-warfare bluster. “Quite frankly, I am both disappointed for our country and shocked at some of the rhetoric,” he says. “It was rhetoric, I thought, that was more appropriate for some left-wing strong man than for the president of the United States.”
“Talking about corporate jets and oil companies,” Rubio says, missed the point. “Everybody here agrees that our tax code is broken,” he says, and he is open to discussing tax reform. “But don’t go around telling people that the reason you are not doing well is because some rich guy is in a corporate jet or some oil company is making too much money.”
¡Viva Rubio!

About the Declaration there is a finality that is exceedingly restful.
It is often asserted that the world has made a great deal of progress since 1776, that we have had new thoughts and new experiences which have given us a great advance over the people of that day, and that we may therefore very well discard their conclusions for something more modern. But that reasoning cannot be applied to this great charter.
If all men are created equal, that is final. If they are endowed with inalienable rights, that is final. If governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, that is final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions.
If anyone wishes to deny their truth or their soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people.
Those who wish to proceed in that direction can not lay claim to progress. They are reactionary. Their ideas are not more modern, but more ancient, than those of the Revolutionary fathers.
I like Coolidge’s progress.

The Cosmos Corporation is a for profit, private corporation headquartered in Bethesda, Md. (just outside of Washington, DC) They have a payroll of 45 to 55 employees and yearly sales of almost $3,000,000. I suppose you could claim that they provide management services for free just ’cause they’re good guys, but I’m guessing that there’s a management fee. There’s nothing wrong with that, per se.
By the way, I’m perfectly willing to beat my wife – if she tells me I can.
