Well, it seems that one way to help our budgets is to enforce our borders.
The General Accounting Office estimates that as of 2009 there were currently about 350,000 criminal aliens in U.S. prisons, “the majority from Mexico.” At $30,000 per year, per inmate, that’s $11 billion annually, with most of the costs born by the states.
…criminal illegals are putting a strain on budgets, especially in the states with large illegal immigration populations such as Arizona, Colorado, California, Florida, New York, and Texas.
Not coincidentally, many of those same states are facing the largest budget shortfalls for fiscal year 2011 and 2012, including New York and California. Some estimate state budget shortfalls of over $100 billion in 2012 across state governments in the U.S.
In California, it’s estimated that prisoners who are illegal immigrants cost the state at least $1 billion per year just to keep them in prison.
Ya’ think?
But I guess since the elitist northeasterners are being as hard hit as us booger-pickin’, NASCAR lovin’, butt scratchin’ southerners, they can’t be too terribly concerned about it.
That reminds me of an Aggie joke:
A Harvard alumni was at a restaurant and was watching an Aggie order his meal. “Hey, Aggie!” he yelled from the next table. “How’d you know I was an Aggie?” came back the question. Harvard grad said “I could tell by your twang, your clothes, and the way you walk.” “Well, I know you’re from Harvard,” the Aggie replied. “Oh, really,” said the Harvard grad, getting ready to preen himself. “How could you tell that?” “I saw your ring while you were picking your nose,” replied the Aggie.

Good question. My understanding is that when the electric grid is down, the local magic unicorns run off taking away with them their farting rainbows which power “green” vehicles.

As far as I’m concerned, the less FEMA gets involved, the better. My concern focuses on whether or not government picking and choosing whom to “help”? New Orleans got FEMA. Indeed, FEMA showed up in Houston (pre-Obama) so why not Alabama? Picking and choosing whom to assist is the Chicago way of “doing business”.

Electric cars: How well will they perform during an evacuation emergency, especially if the grid is down? Think Hurricane Rita with electric cars. I think power was out at my house for 2 days that time.

Keep on hanging on, and let us know from time to time how you are doing. We’ll celebrate when you announce it is permanent.
#54 Darren That guy in the tornado-destroyed home had insurance. So why was he asking for a gubmint handout? I am very sympathetic to these disaster victims, but you need to take care of yourself when you can, don’t think “Uncle Sugar” first thing after the wind dies down. FEMA is a gubmint agency, how can we expect them to… Read more »

Update: A number of twitterers who were there agree that the judge has expressed an intention of releasing a ruling within 24 hours. Yes, that hearing is today. Walker has not, to my knowledge, been called to that hearing, but he will be there for another hearing on his use of video from the trial (in violation of his own… Read more »
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a column for The Week in which I questioned the notion of electric cars being a green option. My arguments got swift rebuttals from backers of electric cars, but a new study produced in partnership between the British government and the car industry shows just how correct I was. Not only do electric… Read more »

#54 Darren: Can there possibly be any doubt left that the foul “O” is nothing but a vindictive thug? He would not know “statesmanship” if it hit him in the face. I seriously doubt that any FEMA-terdnozzle ever bothered to look at the house, they just made a blanket rejection. It is possible that they checked voter registration (RvsD) and… Read more »

Jefferson County resident Jonathan Stewart said he laughed in shock after the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) claimed the house his family lost in the deadly April 27 twister was ‘not unsafe to live in’. If you see the picture directly above this paragraph, you’ll clearly see there’s virtually nothing left of their home. Displaced families in tornado-ravaged Alabama are… Read more »

The one thing we can’t say with certitude is that Anthony Weiner has been registering his vehicles with the DMV. The New York Daily News did a little investigating after seeing expired tags on his Nissan Pathfinder, and discovered that not only has the car not been registered, but the plates on them belong to a different car (via JWF):… Read more »

I could see that (from my sober perspective).
We’re in a mainly multi-acre plot subdivision with some homeowners having horses and more than one lot. Our adjacent neighbors’ pastures, like ours, are kept more like giant lawns than typical pasture–mowed regularly, fencelines kept clear. The families in the subdivisions on either side of ours appreciate that; the majority of their lots are lawns + homes. The Brazos is… Read more »

Sarah Palin email frenzy backfires on her media antagonists. One can only assume that the Left-leaning editors who dispatched teams of reporters to remote Juneau, the Alaskan capital, to pore over the emails in the hope of digging up a scandal are now viewing the result as a rather poor return on their considerable investment. If anything, Mrs Palin seems… Read more »
