Well, it seems that one way to help our budgets is to enforce our borders.

The General Accounting Office estimates that as of 2009 there were currently about 350,000 criminal aliens in U.S. prisons, “the majority from Mexico.” At $30,000 per year, per inmate, that’s $11 billion annually, with most of the costs born by the states.
…criminal illegals are putting a strain on budgets, especially in the states with large illegal immigration populations such as Arizona, Colorado, California, Florida, New York, and Texas.
Not coincidentally, many of those same states are facing the largest budget shortfalls for fiscal year 2011 and 2012, including New York and California. Some estimate state budget shortfalls of over $100 billion in 2012 across state governments in the U.S.
In California, it’s estimated that prisoners who are illegal immigrants cost the state at least $1 billion per year just to keep them in prison.

Ya’ think?
But I guess since the elitist northeasterners are being as hard hit as us booger-pickin’, NASCAR lovin’, butt scratchin’ southerners, they can’t be too terribly concerned about it.
That reminds me of an Aggie joke:
A Harvard alumni was at a restaurant and was watching an Aggie order his meal. “Hey, Aggie!” he yelled from the next table. “How’d you know I was an Aggie?” came back the question. Harvard grad said “I could tell by your twang, your clothes, and the way you walk.” “Well, I know you’re from Harvard,” the Aggie replied. “Oh, really,” said the Harvard grad, getting ready to preen himself. “How could you tell that?” “I saw your ring while you were picking your nose,” replied the Aggie.
I takes ’em where I can.

Kalifornia’s illegal immigrant population in the prisons is about the same number as they are being forced to release. The solution should be deport them, next question please …. but it won’t happen.

Want proof Slick Rick is still a Democrat?

From 2000, when Perry became governor, through 2009, he earned a total of $2.68 million, according to his tax records. Of that amount, he gave about half a percent to churches and religious organizations, or $14,243.

Deportation doesn’t work so hot unless the border is sealed. We are always reading about DUIs and other crimes committed here by Mexicans who’ve already been deported several times but they keep coming back.

I just read the intro in Doooooooooood’s #4 above and it is a detailed expose of all of kruggie’s lies, distortions and other crapola. I think the site covers 2003-2008. You’re right. I guess I had NASCAR on the brain since my uncle and cousin were watching it when we stopped to visit at the hospital yesterday. Cousin knew all sorts of information about NASCAR – the cost, the drivers, the pit chiefs, etc.

Although I’m not a big fan of car racing (it’s about as exciting to me as soccer), I am always amazed at the skill and coordination of the pit crews. Every step is choreographed perfectly. The amount of practice it takes to be as good as they are must be astounding. I’d rather watch them than the drivers.

Good morning Hamsters. A lovely 71 at 6 and comfy until about 8 when the Sun made the ground mist prevail and sent the humidity ascendant and the unfeathered bipeds dripping. Breeze was still sleeping but has awakened with vigor from the SSW and is slowly banishing the humnidity. It will be miserably hot this afternoon.

One night of watering a section of pasture has worked wonders to revive the gasping Bermuda grass. You can see where the sprinkler’s reach ended and the green is returning. But as it sustains the plants it does not impart the magic nitrogen-induced green that only comes with God’s rain, borne by lightning and fixed in soil by specialized bacteria. Given the extreme dryness here, it is prudent to have greenery surrounding the house and barn in case of grassfire gone wild. Thus far our area has been spared. Thank you, Lord.

Extremely prudent advice. I would add removing as much dry undergrowth out to your property line as possible. The more fuel you remove, the less there is to propagate wild fires. You would think the forestry services would have figured that out by now?!? How many more millions of acres need to be burned in a futile effort to save the spotted butt-leach or whatever. How many of those kinds of critters survive the wildfire, hmmmmmmmmm?

From your lips to G_d’s ears on that one.

This past New Year’s Eve I and some other guys wound up having to stamp out a grass fire that ignited from careless fireworks handling. We were at some friend’s house who lived in a pretty new development, and the fire started in the tall grass of a still vacant lot, but with houses on either side. The fire reached ~10 – 12 ft. in diameter when we noticed it. We all ran down there with sheets of cardboard, and between that and people just stamping it out with their feet we got it extinguished. It could have been much, much worse had it gone unnoticed. Putting out fires when you’re drunk is not my idea of fun.

Finally it appears that someone has a brain on the east coast.

CARLISLE, Pa. – A central Pennsylvania school has a woolly plan to keep its grass neatly trimmed.
The Carlisle Area School District says it can save up to $15,000 a year by turning over some landscaping chores to sheep.
The Patriot-News of Harrisburg reports the district is using the sheep to keep the grass near its solar panels neatly trimmed. The sheep nibble grass in the morning and take refuge in the shade of the panels in the afternoon.
With the food already on hand, the district need only supply the sheep with water.
A middle school assistant principal is providing the sheep. Eric Sands says he’s still trying to figure out exactly how many sheep he needs to use to keep the area clear.

That reminds me of a catch I made one night – nothing like his – but it amazed my class and my “cool” factor went up a notch or two.

One of the first things I warn my students each year is that I throw things. Usually it’s candy, but I have been know to throw markers, erasers, and pens at students who are not paying attention, especially if they are talking. One night I threw a Bic stick pen at a table of slackers, and then continued on with the lesson. I was sitting at the front table, reading some of my notes, when I saw in my peripheral vision the pen getting tossed back at me. I only had a split second to react, and I never took my eyes off my page nor did I stutter or pause in my reading. I just reached up and grabbed the pen like I was taking it off a shelf. As I continued reading, I put the pen down and continued on with the lesson.

It took a few seconds for the “oooooooooohs” to die down.

You don’t mess with me when I’m teaching.

One can only assume that the Left-leaning editors who dispatched teams of reporters to remote Juneau, the Alaskan capital, to pore over the emails in the hope of digging up a scandal are now viewing the result as a rather poor return on their considerable investment.
If anything, Mrs Palin seems likely to emerge from the scrutiny of the 24,000 pages, contained in six boxes and weighing 275 pounds, with her reputation considerably enhanced. As a blogger at Powerline noted, the whole saga might come to be viewed as “an embarrassment for legacy media”.

We’re in a mainly multi-acre plot subdivision with some homeowners having horses and more than one lot. Our adjacent neighbors’ pastures, like ours, are kept more like giant lawns than typical pasture–mowed regularly, fencelines kept clear. The families in the subdivisions on either side of ours appreciate that; the majority of their lots are lawns + homes. The Brazos is the southern border of our subdivision. Fortunately our neighborhood committee sees to having the vacant lots mowed regularly during the growing season if the owner does not manage it him/herself. Neighboring multi-acre subdivisions do likewise, but there are several large cattle pastures in the area that have scrubby bushes and weeds the cows won’t eat. They are for sure a concern for the neighborhoods.

The one thing we can’t say with certitude is that Anthony Weiner has been registering his vehicles with the DMV. The New York Daily News did a little investigating after seeing expired tags on his Nissan Pathfinder, and discovered that not only has the car not been registered, but the plates on them belong to a different car (via JWF):

When Weiner (D-Queens, Brooklyn) was photographed by the Daily News fleeing the Capitol in his Nissan Pathfinder, it was clear the July 2007 registration sticker in his window was expired, and there was no inspection sticker to be seen. Weiner, through a staffer, said the 1988 Nissan Pathfinder was registered in New York State.

Not so, said the state Department of Motor Vehicles.

The New York license plate bolted on Weiner’s Pathfinder – US Congress 9 – had expired as of 2006, according to the DMV.

“That license plate should not be on a car,” a DMV spokeswoman said. It wasn’t even issued to the Pathfinder, but to another one of Weiner’s cars, a Honda, according to vehicle records.

Finally, a Weiner scandal not involving a weiner.

Jefferson County resident Jonathan Stewart said he laughed in shock after the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) claimed the house his family lost in the deadly April 27 twister was ‘not unsafe to live in’.

If you see the picture directly above this paragraph, you’ll clearly see there’s virtually nothing left of their home.

Displaced families in tornado-ravaged Alabama are outraged after being denied federal aide to rebuild their flattened homes – due to ‘insufficient damage’.

    (snip)

Mr Stewart told AL.com a FEMA inspector saw first-hand the Pleasant Grove residence he shared with his wife, Lisa, and their two children was ripped from the ground.
Three days after the visit, however, he received a letter reading: ‘Based on your FEMA inspection, we have determined that the disaster has not caused your home to be unsafe to live in.

‘Although the disaster may have caused some minor damage it is reasonable to expect you or your landlord to make these repairs. At this time you are not eligible for FEMA housing assistance.’

While I’m not heartbroken with the lack of FEMA help, I do wonder if the federal governent isn’t being vindictive with its resources. After all that IS the Chicago way and there is a Chicago-based politician runnning (or trying to) the show.

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a column for The Week in which I questioned the notion of electric cars being a green option. My arguments got swift rebuttals from backers of electric cars, but a new study produced in partnership between the British government and the car industry shows just how correct I was. Not only do electric vehicles produce just as much carbon in their overall cycle as internal-combustion engines, the need to replace the batteries actually makes the less green than current technology (via Jeff Dunetz):

ELECTRIC cars could produce higher emissions over their lifetimes than petrol equivalents because of the energy consumed in making their batteries, a study has found.

An electric car owner would have to drive at least 129,000km before producing a net saving in CO2. Many electric cars will not travel that far in their lifetime because they typically have a range of less than 145km on a single charge and are unsuitable for long trips. Even those driven 160,000km would save only about a tonne of CO2 over their lifetimes. …

The study was commissioned by the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership, which is jointly funded by the British government and the car industry. It found that a mid-size electric car would produce 23.1 tonnes of CO2 over its lifetime, compared with 24 tonnes for a similar petrol car. Emissions from manufacturing electric cars are at least 50 per cent higher because batteries are made from materials such as lithium, copper and refined silicon, which require much energy to be processed.

Many electric cars are expected to need a replacement battery after a few years. Once the emissions from producing the second battery are added in, the total CO2 from producing an electric car rises to 12.6 tonnes, compared with 5.6 tonnes for a petrol car. Disposal also produces double the emissions because of the energy consumed in recovering and recycling metals in the battery. The study also took into account carbon emitted to generate the grid electricity consumed.

Keep up with the Volt production, GM. On second thought, cancel that. After GM returns to the private sector, THEN they may continue with the Volt production if they want.

Update: A number of twitterers who were there agree that the judge has expressed an intention of releasing a ruling within 24 hours.

Yes, that hearing is today. Walker has not, to my knowledge, been called to that hearing, but he will be there for another hearing on his use of video from the trial (in violation of his own order).

The disgusting thing in reading this is that virtually none of the people opposing this motion deal with the issue honestly, pretending that this is simply based on the judge’s orientation. The motion is crystal clear that it is concerned that the judge has an interest in marrying, and is therefore possibly literally deciding on his own rights.

    As I wrote before:

By issuing a statewide injunction applying to all gay couples, that meant that if the ruling was upheld, and the stay is lifted, Judge Walker could go to a justice of the peace, and request that this person marry him to his long-term same-sex partner. And if that JP refused, the Judge could then go back to the federal court and move that the Justice of the Peace be held in contempt of his own order. Indeed, if he was not retired, according to the Anti-Proposition 8 forces, he could sit in judgment in the contempt proceedings.

Indeed there was (potentially) tons of bias in Judge Walker’s decision to tell the people of California to stuff it regarding Prop 8. I do hope the courts get it right this time.

Just a Reminder: Judge Ware to Hear the Motion to Vacate Judge Walker’s Proposition 8 Ruling Today (Update: The Hearing’s Over)

That guy in the tornado-destroyed home had insurance. So why was he asking for a gubmint handout? I am very sympathetic to these disaster victims, but you need to take care of yourself when you can, don’t think “Uncle Sugar” first thing after the wind dies down.

FEMA is a gubmint agency, how can we expect them to get it right every time? They probably just mixed up the paperwork. A house that is down to the slab + rubble is clearly not one that even an incompetent gubmint toad would intentionally declare inhabitable.
