Thursday Gamblin’ Open Comments

Those of you who think legalized gamblin’ will mean the end of budget shortfalls and will provide lots of jobs and other economic benefits might want to rethink. Las Vegas of the East has experienced a sharp decline in its fortunes in the last four or five years.

Four years ago, some Atlantic City casino customers were shelling out $1,000 for a brownie sprinkled with edible gold dust in a Baccarat crystal they could take home.
Nowadays, some wait until 11 p.m. to eat so they can get a steak dinner for $2.99.

Atlantic City has seen its position erode not only because of the economy, but from increased competition in neighboring locales. People voted with their feet for other options for a variety of reasons that left Atlantic City wondering what to do next.
The upshot is that what was once a sure bet for generating piles of cash has run its course and a city that once had all that cash finds itself with a $1.5 billion hole in its revenue.

    G’Morning all
Greetings from the tree farm. Sister had her one year breast cancer checkup yesterday. Still all clear. Thank God and modern medicine. Getting a few inquires about oil shale leases up here. Nothing to salivate over yet.

I have seen the reports about gambling profit declines, but
My personal belief is if you want to gamble, go for it. Laws should be made to protect me from other people from me and me from other people.

The problem with Atlantic City is the area located two blocks off of the boardwalk and casino row is a combat zone. It isn’t quite the blighted appearence of Newark, but it isn’t far from it.

Wanna gamble? Sure go ahead; just don’t tell me it will solve all of our tax problems and make sure you don’t make me pick up your markers when you inevitably lose.

Let them gamble all they want to, and tax the heck out of it – it still won’t change a thing on the bottom line. The gambling dollars will come at the expense of some other form of entertainment out there. Remember how the lotto was going to save us, how horseracing was going to save us, how dog racing was going to save us, how off track betting was going to save us………

Let’s get the government out of the moral equation. Handle gambling just like liquor – by local option. If a municipality want to turn into a gang infested gambling mecca, let them have at it. If they don’t want it, they don’t have to have it. Much ado about nothing really since it’s just adding more competition for the discretionary dollar.

Reply to No. 6: “Much ado about nothing really since itโ€™s just adding more competition for the discretionary dollar.” is correct but that discretionary dollar is currently being spent in the casinos in Louisiana. And any tax benefit to a state is going to that state. And any jobs associated with the gambling industry is also in that state. So better here then there if there is going to be any discretionary spending.

No new jobs will be created, at least with the current legislation. The current legislation only puts slot machines in existing race tracks (most of them owned by the fambly of the current Speaker of the Texas House). Delivery of the machines will be done by currently employed drivers. Service of the machines will be by current employees of the race tracks. Any revenue generated by Gramma staring at a machine like a zombie while pushing quarters into a slot will be negligible and of more benefit to a powerful politician than it is to the citizens of the state.

B-b-b-but that would mean that politicians couldn’t set up industries that benefit their friends and contributors by creating competition free access to the dollars of the citizens.

Great good morning Hamsters. Whee, celebrating 67 at 6 out here in the country on the north bank of the Brazos at Richmond. Had to double check the home weather station to be sure that’s what it was reading. Sure felt like it on the way to the barn to feed the mares, and they were enjoying it too. Ground mist in the distance and barely a breeze completed the picture, but now the mist is long gone, and the breeze is awake. It will be hot again this afternoon, so must do the outdoor stuff now or wait until evening.

Apparently the rain chances for the weekend are slowlly evaporating, but with a tropical disturbance one never knows. Think of Allison that would not go away, not that we need or want a rerun of it. So it’s back to watering the elephants today to stay a step ahead of wilted leaves and drooping stems. ๐Ÿ™

#8 – While you are adding up the gambling jobs and profits taken from the Louisiana coffers, don’t forget to adjust for the loss of revenue from gasoline sales, tire sales, driver salaries, highway repairs, auto sales and repairs, and the like that would be lost or diminished by adding local venues. As I said, the net is probably not much, and even that is a shift of revenue, not actually a change.

Handsome Son pulled his back this morning. His new girlfriend is coming over to help him swap out cold/heat packs and to fetch and carry for him. He has a two hour tutoring session this afternoon – I hope he can sit long enough to sustain his concentration.

Got this one in an email:

HOW TO BE A GRACIOUS B***CH

Jennifer’s wedding day was fast approaching. Nothing could dampen her excitement – not even her parent’s nasty divorce.

Her mother had found the PERFECT dress to wear, and would be the best-dressed mother-of-the-bride ever!

A week later, Jennifer was horrified to learn that her father’s new, young wife had bought the exact same dress as her mother! Jennifer asked her father’s new young wife to exchange it, but she refused. ”Absolutely not! I look like a million bucks in this dress,
and I’m wearing it,” she replied.

Jennifer told her mother who graciously said, ”Never mind sweetheart. I’ll get another dress. After all, it’s your special day.”

A few days later, they went shopping, and did find another gorgeous dress for her mother.
When they stopped for lunch, Jennifer asked her mother, ”Aren’t you going to return the other dress? You really don’t have another occasion where you could wear it.”

Her mother just smiled and replied, ”Of course I do, dear…..I’m . . .

wearing it to the rehearsal dinner the night BEFORE the wedding.”

For anyone who may be interested, Iowahawk has now enlisted the help of the ace detective Dan Rather to solve the case of the Weiner hack. You may recall that Dan was involved in earlier capers including the case of the Bush flight school absences, John Edwards involvement in an extramarital affair, and several others. In fact, if you haven’t read all the Detective Dan stories, you’re missing out. Check it out.
