Thursday Open Comments

Barney Stinson would be first in line for a TSA job. Especially when looking at this picture. (I didn’t feel it fit in with the “family fare” we try to dish out here on Hammy’s Comfy Couch, so I’m hiding it behind a link.) Our Texas legislature tried to deny this opportunity for sexual perverts to legally touch us in places that would make Hammy’s Grammy blush, but the feds came down hard on our brave would-be protectors, forcing the legislators to back down.
Could the TSA have shut down air travel through Texas?ย  I suppose the airlines would not have been able to fight the ban, since the federal government has so many regulations on them that the government effectively “owns” them. I found this brief article at TownHall.com, and despite the seriousness of the subject, some of the comments were thought provoking and others were just truly funny:

I hate to instigate, but it is about time for states to start considering whether or not the TSA can physically enforce their edicts. The TSA is limited in its number of personnel and their firepower. There are obviously more police in the state of Texas than there are TSA personnel. TSA personnel cannot cancel flights if they are being escorted off the premises.
At the very least, the suggestion of this should incentivize the TSA to back down from the brink. Are they really willing to risk their total delegitimization for the prerogative to carry out an irrelevant security procedure? Are they willing to fall on their sword for random passenger gropings? Especially if more than one state does this.
We have reached a serious juncture when I even have to suggest this. The requirement to have one’s sexual organs groped as a condition of flying is such an egregious and obvious violation of individual rights, I do not think the country can survive over the long term if it allows it to continue. A people who view themselves as rights-less pieces of meat will not defend themselves or their country.
The proper strategy for delegitimizing these out of control federal agencies is to force them to act in such an unreasonable manner that their lawlessness cannot be hidden and cannot be denied. That’s when we’ll make some progress rolling back this nonsense.

I saw somebody at the airport named Pat Down.

Where do you apply for one of those TSA jobs? I can’t even get away with that here at home and I’ve been married to the same woman for 25 years.

I was wondering what they would do if a passenger suddenly began the Meg Ryan routine from the restaurant scene in Harry Met Sally? Would that passenger then be arrested for indecent behavior, but the pat-down specialist be exempt???

We really do need to address the very real issue of serious abuse of power by the executive branch of our government.

The TSA is being unreasonable. Obviously someone’s got their panties in a bunch and this has turned into a competition of wills. The TSA can do everything it needs to do to insure flight safety without groping passengers. They could change their procedures to accomodate Texas but this is a precedence setting issue because if Texas is successful, all the states will probably do it. This is LE management at it worst. Groping is caveman thinking. TSA management should be better than that. I think Texas should pass the law and see what happens.

I read an article that claimed the TSA was part of a effort to accustom air travelers to invasive treatment, as is the custom is other parts of the world. According to the article, pats downs, x-rays, etc, aren’t necessary for safety but they are necessary to break the will and spirit of the people. Throw in an occasional failed bomber and the sheeple will reluctantly accept any indignity for the ‘priviledge’ of flying. Although the psychology seemed sound based on the theory of Obama working to subvert freedom and circumstances like the panty bomber seemed to support the conclusion, I’ve found no support for the underlying conspiracy theory. Nor have I heard stories of the TSA actually stopping terrorists. I don’t fly either when driving or going by train is just as convenient and more enjoyable. When Obama loses the presidency, the next president must reform the TSA.

If the stakes weren’t so high, it would be nice to play chicken with the TSA.

So you agree that restrictions on property rights are legal and your blanket statement was spurious.

Sure, restrictions on Property Rights are legal, never said they weren’t. There are times, however, when two rights collide.

If an employer tells his employees that they can’t keep thier guns in thier cars while at work, he has effectively restricted their rights to keep and bear arms not only on his property, but during their drive to work from home (because they can’t leave the weapon in the car when they get there), at lunch (because there is no weapon in thier car), and on the drive home (for the same reason). He is effectively telling them that the only time they can protect themselves is between the time they get home and the time they leave for work, and during weekends and vacation. He is also forcing them to make a choice between employment and exercising a right granted by thier Creator and codified in the Constitution. (Would you allow an employer to make people choose between employment and their First Amendment right by banning political bumper stickers on thier cars? One does wonder.) The effects of his excercise of his rights, therfore, extend far beyond the limits of his property. An overwhelming number of people not only agreed with that concept, but chose Legislators who would introduce and pass legislation that would solve the problem. The bill passed the Senate on a 30-1 vote and was so uncontested in the House that only a voice votte was required to pass it. Given your position on the issue would you join with or support a law suit brought by a property owner to overturn this law?

When it comes to smoking, the property owner has the right to choose whether he will allow it or not. Do you agree with me on that?

Joe Straus did not agree with that when he allowed the Smoking Ban Amendment to be attached to a fiscal bill, even though a point of order had been raised pointing out the two subject rule may have been violated.

I also think that when it comes to publicly funded colleges, there is no private property involved. It is as public as a park or shopping mall and thus, persons who have passed the testing and background checks to be granted the permission to carry concealed while on campus. There is no logical reason or property rights rationale to support banning CCL from campii. Do you agree with me on that?

Joe Straus apparently disagreed because when a point of order raised by a Liberal
Democrat that said an amendment to a college funding bill that would allow concealed carry on campus violated the two subject rule, he said it did, now the voice of the people will once again not be heard on this issue, and thier representatives will once again not be allowed to vote on it.

Do you think that one, both, or neither of those rulings was right and correct on Straus’ part?

I also think that shooting ranges that have already been established and are in business should be somewhat protected from politically motivated nuisance suits brought by anti-gun groups, as well as big developers who buy the land next door knowing that nobody will buy houses next to a gun range. Its not hard to tell that you’re,buying property nexty to a shooting range. When you look at the property you want to buy you hear guns shots and see signs and a parling lot—stuff like that. So if you buy thge property then sue the range owner, you intended to sue him all along, so you shouldn’t be allowed to. Do you agree with me on that?

My position on property rights is pretty consistent, except for where the property owners exercise of his rights violates or infringes on mine. Do you agree with me on that?

Joe Straus, OTOH, has not been consistent. When it came to violating the rights of property owners as regards smoking, he let an amendment that was not exactly on subject with a bill pass through and be passed (it was a fiscal bill that ahd to be passed). When it came to expanding the rights of CCL holders, he ruled that an amendment in the exact same subject circumstances could not be voted on.

At the beginning of the Lege, defenders of Straus did so by saying he was a Proven Conservative Leader, and alleging that any criticism of him was anti-semetic, crazy, or destined to make the Tea Party look bad.

Now, his defenders just say “Don’t talk about it. Its boring.”

In the meantime, he gets rich off gambling legislation that benefits only a few people, most of them in his family, he takes action to abridge property rights, and to deny passage of popular leglislation.

Yet the folks who want to talk about it are the bad guys.

Is there any wonder why we’re in the mess we’re in now? Is there any wonder the Establishment Republicans keep poking sticks in the eyes of Conservatives?

    So, lets discuss Struas.

Was he right to let that amendment pass through that created a smoking ban all across the State?

Was he right to not let an amendment pass through that would have allowed CCL holders to carry concealed on campus?

Both issues were challenged on a Point of Order regarding the “Two Subject Rule.” Both were attached to fiscal bills that needed to be passed. Yet he ruled that one should pass and the other should not. Does that demonstrate anything at all regarding his priorities, political ideology, and protection of the rights of individuals?

Lets just keep me out of it.

Hey Serge – get over yourself. That comment doesn’t have one damn thing to do with Liz.

It has every thing to do with your name calling and berating, that I’ve been on the receiving end of, that you’ve apparently forgotten about – but I haven’t.

I couldn’t care less about your tax problems – my comment was a reference to your berating my education and credentials, along with the comment that you’d “never let me do your taxes” awhile back.

The archives will bear me out – if you care to look.

Bet the inquiries about installing sprinkler systems are growing daily. One would certainly be handy here……hint to spouse. Daily hauling sprinklers (aka watering the elephants) is already old.

We got back to Katy Saturday night after spending a week on an Alaska cruise. When we decided to go, we were advised to bring along a couple of water bottles to avoid the high prices of refreshments on the ship as well as ashore. We bought two 32 ounce, stainless steel bottles and attached them to our carry on backpacks. They went through the x-ray machines at IAH and were never opened to verify the contents. Same thing when we flew back home from Seattle. When we were finally wedged into our seats on the Continental torture chamber and launched, the woman in the seat in front of us reached in her purse and pulled out a five-inch, pointed, steel nail file and proceeded to tend her manicure. I feel so much safer with Thugs Standing Around protecting me. And a word of advice: never get in line behind a musician with metal stuff sticking out all over his head and body.

#31 Hamous, You won the rain lottery last night.

Saw a cardinal, a bluejay, and a wren all taking a bath in the sprinkler spray yesterday, standing not that far apart and getting along. The resident hawk recently swooped through the spray but didn’t land. All creatures great and small seem attracted to the yard when watering is going on. Horses and squirrels regularly drink separately from the small (50 gallon) tank in the side pasture in daytime, and who knows what critters visit at night.

We installed a new freestanding fountain to replace the smaller wall fountain that splashed too much over everything including windows. Hope its bottom basin is too high up to encourage coons and possums to wash their dinner in it. They regularly left debris in the wall fountain that required regular and labor-intensive cleansing consisting of bailing out as much water as possible and getting the rest with a turkey baster, then wiping off the pump. The taller fountain gets some tree debris in the basin thanks to the ever-present southerly wind, but it is much easier to scoop out. So far the birds don’t seem to have discovered it.

While I wait for a kit, I’ve been trying to research a PSA I heard on the radio. The spokesperson said that having low-income earners file for the Earned Income Tax Credit gives them dignity. My thinking is that EITC is welfare, and where is the dignity in having the gubmint send you money that someone else actually earned? This is a feel-good scam like the self-esteem nonsense that has overwhelmed our culture.

    According to the IRS:

“You could have extra money right there in front of you. Money youโ€™ve already earned.”

    http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=233420,00.html

This is an Orwell-speak definition of “earned”. I looked on the 2010 IRS 1040 Instructions tables. If your income is $1, your tax is $0, but your EITC can be up to $11. You did not earn the extra $10 in any real sense. It is a gubmint giveaway.

I didn’t find the specific PSA I heard, but I learned that

    * States that have income taxes may also have their own EITC

    * The IRS does not disallow illegal aliens from receiving EITC

My sister and her hubby have all sorts of whirligigs and streamers hanging in their garden. Her hubby has a “scarecrow” that he’s put together of squirrel tails, a squirrel skull he found, some feathers, and a few other odds and ends.

Just warnin’ the critters what’ll happen if they mess with his garden.

I saw a cardinal hopping on my rainbow chard after I finished watering yesterday. I still have some bowls that ST brought to my house for a party many, many moons ago; they are bright red on the inside. I put one of those out and am keeping water in it, hoping it’ll help keep the birds out of my ‘maters. I’ve see a couple of bluejays drinking and trying to bathe in it.

Garden is just sputtering along. I water every day, but germination still takes forever and many seeds just aren’t coming up. I have a tomato plant that hasn’t grown since I planted it in the dirt. The one next to it is producing, kinda. I was excited about my eggplant seedling – and it was gone the next day. I was excited about some bean seedlings finally sprouting – they were gone the next day. Same for my second cantaloupe seedling. I had a first cantaloupe seedling goin’, but it’s just been sitting there twiddling it’s proverbial leafy thumbs. It finally put on a second set of leaves and it’s stalling again. I’ve fertilized, I water – is there some kind of magic incantation I need to know?

My sister says they are having the same kind of problems with slow germination and slow growth – but their garden is doing 10x better than mine. Maybe I need to get me some whirligigs. P’haps my plants just aren’t entertained enough.

THe most effective bird repellant I have ever used is a well made pellet rifle with a 4X scope; it just takes a touch from aunt sugar to put em to sleep and they don’t ever come back – theyre yummy too.

    Turns out the money-grubbing, self-mutilating grifter is a … um … money-grubbing, self-mutilating grifter and more:

It appears that Nikki Araguz could have a new plot line for the proposed new reality TV show about her increasingly turbulent life.

Araguz, the transgender widow of a Wharton firefighter embroiled in a legal battle over her husband’s death benefits, boasted on her Facebook page in February about getting a new Rolex watch.

It turns out Araguz is accused of stealing the Rolex, valued at $2,850, from a woman who told Houston police she was drugged shortly after meeting Araguz and another woman about 11 p.m. Feb. 24 at Eddie V’s Bar, 2800 Kirby Drive.

According to court records, the woman who reported her watch missing said she began to feel ill shortly after meeting Araguz.

Just my opinion. Straus has done well for his family and was the best the democrats could hope for. As long as the republicans have at least a one seat majority, the democrats will keep him as speaker. He has no concern about conservatives or losing a few seats to dems next time around. It would almost be worth a democrat majority to watch the republicans howl when the dems toss Straus.

    I donโ€™t know. Is your name โ€œMelvinโ€? โ€œMarvinโ€?
And the final question: Would you ever in a million years give your wife a Christmas present like that magnet-cranker device that Tedtam posted tโ€™other day?
If you answered NO to all, youโ€™re OK.

Hummm, not so sure, I answered no to them all BUTT I did get my Bride a “Radio Flyer All Terrain” wagon for her birthday, to use when she works in her flower beds, did I strike out?
    She loves it BTW. ๐Ÿ˜€

    He’s the Democrats favorite Republican.

The only way to get rid of him is to get rid of the Lege members who pledge to him now.

John Zerwas is on my list.

Before anybody says it is usual to give the opposition some seats, this is parity. Not the same thing. This is what we will get again after Straus gets rid of some conservatives.

The wagon for a gardener seems terrific to me! A dumbax gift for wimmins is something the man likes but she will absolutely hate. The real problem is giving your S.O. something without having a clue whether they will like it or not. Of course, we all misjudge and mess up a bit occasionally.

Well ole Dave has been busier than a three legged cat burying a turd on a frozen pond. I spent all morning trying to finish up all the paper work that has to be done before I get back, then I had to go to the Cal Lab to pick up 38 microphones and log them in so that we can run the next acoustics test next week. I was determined to leave @ 2:00 so I could go by and get my ears lowered, BUTT then I had to go to another Building to get some old accelerometers to send to back the Cal Lab. I did get out a little after 2:00 and went to the barber shop and then loaded up the old pick-um-up. Later I took the wife out to eat and she decided to come along also! If you don’t know the details, she went to Hawaii for 9 days for a wedding and didn’t think she could get away for more than 2 days but she found that she didn’t have to work on Saturday and will be off on Monday so she’s leaving on Saturday morning and heading straight to Florida, about 9-10 hours, instead of going Alabama 10-12 hours. Lil’ Sister will be coming down on Sunday,…Yes Life is Good! Thank you Lord! ๐Ÿ˜€
