Wednesday Damage Control Comments

In the old days this position was called “Minister of Propaganda”:

Any press is good press, right? The Obama administration apparently doesn’t think so.
The White House has created a new position dedicated to damage control in the media, but it appears the role will focus on spinning negative stories published on left-of-center websites — or “progressive” blogs as the new job defines them — not right-wing news outlets.
In an internal personnel memo first obtained by the Huffington Post, itself a liberal-slanted blog, White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer writes that staffer Jesse Lee will head up the new initiative.
“This week, Jesse Lee will move from the new media department into a role in the communications department as Director of Progressive Media & Online Response,” Pfeiffer writes.
“For the last two years, Jesse has often worn two hats working in new media and serving as the White House’s liaison with the progressive media and online community. Starting this week, Jesse will take on the second role full time working on outreach, strategy and response.”

    Morning all, something interesting
    Sense of Freshness….
A while ago a new supermarket opened in our area.
It has an automatic water mister to keep the produce fresh.
Just before it goes on, you hear the sound of distant thunder and the smell of fresh rain.
When you pass the milk cases, you hear cows mooing and you experience the scent of fresh mowed hay.
In the meat department there is the aroma of charcoal grilled steaks.
When you approach the egg case, you hear hens cluck and cackle, and the air is filled with the pleasing aroma of bacon and eggs frying.
The bread department features the tantalizing smell of fresh baked bread and cookies.
I don’t buy toilet paper there any more.

    Morning all.
I took the day off to attend a funeral and to see about taking care of my very large hospital bill. The person that passed wasn’t family; but an aquaintance from church. He was hospitalized for something, I think cancer, and then died a couple of days later. Very unfortunate.
Take care, all. And, of course, behave yourselves.

Tex-Can, down here in Houston those rustic sound effects were the signature of a big Randall’s grocery store. They somehow directed the aroma from the bakery right to the main entrance/airlock area. I don’t go to Randall’s very often any more because the one closest to me closed several years ago, but your gag rushed me right back to that doughnut scent on entering the store.

Speaking of which, are you recuperated to everyone’s satisfaction? I notice you are usually up pretty late on the Couch again…

    And, of course, behave yourselves.

Prolly asking too much of this gang! But you can ask us to express ourselves.

    From yesterday’s O/C thread:
Prolly my favorite teacher was from Memorial High, here in good ole H-Town; Her name was Polly Koslowski, a chemistry teacher. She was completely ambidexterous, you would have to really pay attention to notice when she changed hands while writing on the blackboard. She taught me about “phase change” that wonderful phenomenon that makes an air conditioner work, and beer freeze in the bottle after you open it, and lots of other cool stuff as well :>)

Another case for bleaching the educational gene pool.

ASHBURNHAM (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – Parents in Ashburnham are questioning a school proposal to buy 150 new iPads for children in kindergarten.

Some question if this is the best use of taxpayer money. Catherine Adair has children in school at Briggs Elementary. She tells FOX 25, “We have no Vice Principal. We have a very bare bones staff. I don’t think kindergartners having iPads is the best expenditure of taxpayer money.”

    Well, this guy noticed something.

This is the third (fourth?) session for campus carry. Since 2009, the house republican leadership, in the form of Joe Straus, has killed campus carry.

THis year, the calendar committee blocked HB750 for more than two months. A senate version finally broke through, but Straus buried it in POO. (I noticed he didn’t use the two subject rule to kill the smoking amendment to a financial bill, but he did to stop a state university RKBA amendment to a state university bill. Proof it’s not about the rules, it’s abut their anti-RKBA agenda.)

I wonder how property rights advocates feel about Straus bending the rules to pass a smoking ban.

I know how gun rights advocates feel about him not bending the rules to allow Campus Carry.

What if there was a guy running for Prez who was as witty as Mark Twain who could speak intelligently without the need for a teleprompter? What if he could debate as well as Newt ?gingrich, but without all the academic, moral, and politicaly baggage? What if he played guitar in a rock and roll band—and the name of the band was “The Second Amendments”? What if he wrote a book and the title was “Seize Freedom: American Truths and Renewal in a Chaotic Age” ? What if he had advised against supporting the uprising in Egypt, warning that the replacement for Mubarak might be worse for this country and peace in the Middle East than he was? What if he was a 4 term Republican member of Congress, a Conservative from the Mid West?

What if he voted against TARP?

    Would you vote for him?

You just might get the chance.

The Twizy has no doors – to “ensure enjoyable open-air motoring”, says Renault – though an upgraded version, the Twizy Technic, does have “side deflectors”.

I think what they mean by “enjoyable open-air motoring” is “freeze your ass off in the winter and get soaking wet when it rains”, but I could be wrong.

There’s the odd look, though we have to say there’s a certain ‘moon buggy’ appeal to it. Sort of.

I think the translation from the French is a bit incorrect. I think “Moon buggy appeal” should have been translated as “death trap good looks.”

Then there’s the battery. It delivers a peak range of 60 miles, but here’s the thing: it’s a separate purchase.

Well, at least its not “Some Assembly Required.”

The defense of Straus centers around his making sure that everybody plays by the rules.

But we show where he did not make the same interpretation in another case.

I acknowledge that the Speaker of the TX House has the power to interpret the rules anyway he wants. Its what makes him one of the most powerful individuals in Texas. I also acknowledge that this is what makes it important that a Conservative occupy the post.

The rulings he has made in just these two cases alone tells me he’s not the Conservative we were told he was. some people are having a hard time admitting that—or at least agreeing with me on it in public.

No really Serge’ you got some love thing going on with Straus.

Another Liberty Bill that could make it to the floor if Joe Straus would let it.

There is nothing about “liberty” in the bill. It is about reducing frivolous lawsuits against gun ranges. And to further show you do not know what you are talking about (and the story even mentions this) it is the House calendar committee that has to push this out.

Typical for you though to obfuscate and confuse the issue.

Spurious on it’s face. By that line of reasoning every deed restriction, zoning law, city ordinance, etc. in the country would be null and void, If you lived in River Oaks mansion and your neighbor decided to bulldoze down his house to build a 10,000 head guinea farm, there’s nothing you or the CoH can do?

Speaking of which, are you recuperated to everyone’s satisfaction? I notice you are usually up pretty late on the Couch again…

Medicine helps to keep the blood pressure under control. It’s still high for where it should be but the meds make a huge difference. One day I left for work realizing in the car I didn’t take it and I had to return home by 10:30 to take the pill and go back to work after. What a difference that made. I could feel a TIA coming on when ont on it. So I’ll probably be onthe meds the rest of my life.

Overall the diet’s the same. No soda, more veggies, lots of water. It can improve but it’s a whole lot better than it was before.

Knowing I wasn’t going to work today I let my guard down and stayed up later than I sholud. I decided to take one last spin on the hamster wheel before crashing. You have my permission to keep on my case regarding my sleep. I think the relaxing nature of sleep does help keep the blood pressure under control. So good amounts of sleep is important.

The coaches would referee the fight and the aggrieved would put on a pair of 16oz gloves and have at it until somebody quit. Most fights lasted about 2-3 minutes with nothing more than bloody noses or fat lips or black eyes the result. The school at that time figured it was better than the fight taking place off campus and somebody really getting hurt.

Just about the whole student body would show up to watch and almost always the matter was settled right then and there.

I first posted about Guereño being shot 60 times in his home during a police raid HERE. Bob Owens at Pajamas Media has a piece written about the same incident.
First and foremost, I obviously missed the significance of the Sheriff’s name. Sheriff Dupnik’s deputies carried out the raid on Guereño’s home. Owen’s article reminded me as to who Dupnik is. Every hamster blogger here should know Dupnik as the sheriff who blamed the rhetoric of the Tea Party for Rep. Gifford’s tragic shooting earlier this year. That remark infuriated me and I’m sure it did everyone else here.
Here’s how Owens describe Dupnik’s SWAT team.

Dupnik’s SWAT team initially claimed that Guereña fired at them while they were serving a warrant — as he slept. They claimed that his bullets hit the bulletproof shield that the entry team hid behind, and that the barrage of bullets they fired back was in self-defense.
Only, Guereña never fired his weapon. Awoken by his wife with screams that men with guns were invading his home and threatening his family, Jose Guereña armed himself with a AR-15 rifle and crouched in the hallway. The SWAT team unloaded upon Guereña on sight. He apparently recognized the home invaders as police. He took 60 rounds, but never — as the Pima County Sheriff’s Department was forced to admit — took off his weapon’s safety as he was being killed.

    (snip)

Not only has the Pima Sheriff’s Department tried to justify firing 71 shots at one man in a small hallway, hitting him (thankfully, just him) 60 times in a home where his wife and child were present. They’ve attempted to justify their refusal to let a team of paramedics treat Guereña, who was still miraculously alive after being sprayed mercilessly with bullets. It takes a competent SWAT team just a handful of minutes to “clear” a residential home during a raid. Dupnik’s SWAT team refused to declare the scene “clear” for an agonizing one hour and 14 minutes, and not until Jose Guereña had already died.

    (snip)

Not content to blame the victim for his own death, they attempted to insinuate he was a drug dealer, even though they were forced to admit under direct questioning that no drugs were found in his home, and that a clumsy cop falling down may have triggered the bloodbath.

If Owen’s description is nearly accurate, this is atrocious. SWAT came in unannounced, a clumsy officer may have lead to 71 shots fired at Guereño, said SWAT tried to blame Guereño, for being shot, the victim here is Hispanic (that means “racial minority). This happened all under the sheriff who says the Tea Party is responsible for shooting people and for racial prejudice causing violence in his county.

    Sickening.

After surviving two tours of duty in Iraq, only to lose his life in an encounter with Clarence Dupnik’s keystone cops, Jose Guereña was buried with full military honors.

Unfortunately, this is the only “good news” from this story. God bless Jose Guereño and his family.

While working on Saturday, Steven McCormack slipped between the cab and the trailer of his truck and was impaled in the thigh by a high-pressure air cylinder which saw his body pumped full of compressed air.

Driving to the office this morning, I was following a Jeep Wrangler that had a COEXIST bumper sticker
    [ http://www.amazon.com/PeaceMonger-Coexist-Bumper-Sticker/dp/B002QSX8P8 ]
and a Yin/Yang design cover on the spare tire on the back of the car. That was bad enough, but then danged if it didn’t turn into the same parking garage as I did!

Well it’s been a loong day but after work, I just ’bout got all my crap together for the road trip. Daughter called a while ago and told me that her long time roommate’s older sister committed suicide last week. It’s a long sad story, but the much older sister had a 15 year old daughter that has always been a problem child and now the roommate will probably have to take care of her. I’m guessing that you’ve all been reading between the lines and realize that the sister had major issues also. Daughter and her roommate lived together for 3-4 years in College Station and always took care of each other. She is one of daughter’s best friends and she met her after she left home. Sad, Very Sad.
