Monday Open Comments

LOUISIANA, MO. — He’s a hard-core biker with a sensitive soft side. Truly, how many Harley owners do you know who stitch quilts on the side? And have you ever met a HOG lover who makes his quilts out of women’s panties? And let’s not forget this character has his nickname “Shovelhead” tattooed just below the bridge of his cap. Yep, right there on his forehead so you won’t forget his name—as if anyone could forget ol’ Shovelhead.
But back to the panty quilt…
Louis “Shovelhead” Garrett rents out the basement of his mother’s house in Louisiana, Mo. That’s where he crafts his one-of-a-kind quilts. He’s kind of picky with his panties. He’ll accept silk, acetate, nylon, even rayon. But polyester panties need not apply.
“I don’t want them cheap, dollar store, not-sexy-farm-girl panties. I want classy.”

Yup. He’s got classy written all over him. Oh wait, that doesn’t say “classy”.

    I guess he needs to meet up with the “Women’s Foundation” quilt I saw some years back at the Brown. It had bras and girdles all over it.

    Now that we’ve got the wimmins covered, I’m waiting for one made with jock straps.

    This is going to be a rough day.     PF/OBH once again stated that he wanted Israel to retreat back to the pre 1967 borders this weekend – and this was at an AIPAC meeting no less. I am reminded of the citations in Revelation:

What we are witnessing is the separation of the sheep from the goats; there are those who want to pursue the goals of Y_VH, and those who want to go the other direction.     Good afternoon Hamsters. Back from the comparative winter (for us) of Colorado Springs and environs. Spouse’s professional society meeting at the Broadmoor outside Colorado Springs went well, and we enjoyed the hospitality of a 5-star hotel. Had never stayed in a place like that and could get used to such good surroundings and service.

    Following the meeting we moved a few miles down the road to the La Quinta–this on our own nickel. A week in almost springtime Colorado was a dash backward to our winter, requiring layers of clothes that constitute winter wear here. Experienced lows in the upper 30s higher up and several episodes of snow flurries on day trips following the meeting; heavy snows up in the mountains reported on the weather news; the cog railway up Pikes Peak could only go halfway up because of heavy snow and winds the day we had reservations (got a partial refund).

    Colorado suffers drought as well, and usual snows in the lower elevations did not come this winter. Grasslands are brown as seen from the air, stock tanks partially filled, trees late leafing out at moderate elevations. Winter flowers still going strong in landscaping. In the high country there’s plenty of snow from winter, and more falls with each new front. Spring thaw has not really begun, and when it does there will likely be flooding. Fire danger is elevated pretty much everywhere near the foothills and higher up. The folks there have heard of the wildfires in Texas and well understand our situation.

    The Broadmoor has a wonderful carriage museum, with rows of elegant harness lining one wall. There’s also an interesting side saddle collection, some saddles missing some parts, and the variety undoubtedly represented many different saddlers. The curator was delighted to have some commentary from someone who rode side saddle and learning the significant differences between riding astride and riding aside.

    Good to be back home to the routine of watering the yard and flowers. Mariposa is very needy and follows us everywhere now that she’s been bailed out of the cattery. Mara is also happy to be home from boarding at the vet clinic. We’re delighted she does not have a tumor in her throat but rather an inflammation of the larynx that’s squeezing the windpipe when she grazes. A course of antibiotics should shrink that.

    Can see we missed a lot being out of the news loop for a week.

    George W. Bush’s greatest domestic achievement was to provide us two very good judges on the Supreme Court. It is very safe to say that Ruth Bader Ginsgurb will retire during the next term of the sitting president. 2012’s vote is therefore that much more potent. One more conservative judge on the Supreme Court would tip it into that direction. That’s what we need, not Justice Kennedy.

One more conservative judge on the Supreme Court would tip it into that direction. That’s what we need, not Justice Kennedy.

    And electing just any Republican is no guarantee that we’ll get a decent replacement. Why?

    Look at who appointed the Justice you don’t like:

    Reagan nominated Robert Bork first, but the conservative Bork met fierce opposition in the Senate and ultimately failed to win confirmation. Reagan then turned to Douglas Ginsburg, a judge from the U.S. Court of Appeals in the District of Columbia Circuit. Ginsburg, however, withdrew himself from consideration after only nine days when allegations leaked concerning his past marijuana use. Reagan, on the advice of Meese, finally turned to Kennedy to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court. Kennedy’s nomination, unlike Reagan’s two previous picks, encountered little resistance. Most observers viewed him favorably and even liberals thought of him as pragmatic and fair-minded. The Senate unanimously confirmed Kennedy on February 3, 1988 and he took the oaths of office a few days later.

    And his Veep didn’t do us any favors either:

    Governor John Sununu promoted Souter to the New Hampshire Supreme Court in 1983. Souter quickly established himself as a knowledgeable jurist and an independent thinker. President Bush appointed Souter to the U.S. Court of Appeals in 1990. Justice William J. Brennan retired five months later, however, and Bush decided to move Souter up again. He was all for the CCW because he figured that it would allow people to get a license only after jumping through hoops. When I heard of this nonsense about giving the elected officials special privileges I knew that he had went from being the “Citizen Senator” to one of the “Elite Ruling Class”. SAD INDEED. 🙁

He loves kids and so does his lovely Bride. Daughter spent so much time in school that she wants to live on her terms for a while.

    Yes Senator Dan has changed in many ways. I’m waiting for the day it will go full circle, remember during the property tax fight years he’d have everyone burning up the politicians phone lines? Well Michael Berry when on Houston City Council was the recipient of those phone calls for a time there. The day will come the Berry Brigade will be dispatched to go after our good Senator. And I will laugh.

Gordon Liddy because he said, (Liddy, that is) if the Jack Booted Thugs break down your front door and you’re innocent, shoot for the groin because it will not have any protective body armor. Dan was appalled that Liddy would tell folks to defend their home against an invader.     On another note, I’m looking for another pocket pistol. I have a Kel Tec P-11 and it is okay but the trigger pull is very long, about like my SW 686 357. Looking at the Kel Tec PF9 and the Kahr CM9 right now. Any others?

    I have 2 Kahr’s a MK 9 & a K9 they’re sweet, double action only, striker cocked and 7 Lbs trigger pull. They’re also some of the thinest autos around, less than 1 inch wide. The Kel Tec’s are inexpensive, (not cheap) polymer framed pistols that are a little rough but a very good buy.

    WB, I didn’t know that Desert Eagle made a 380. Interesting. But I want to stick to 9mm so that I only have to worry about one type of ammo. Love my Glock 17 but the 26 is a bit large for my pocket, which is where I like to carry.

    #63 wagonburner, Do you own a Desert Eagle? If so you know that they are bad to “stove pipe” if not keep completly clean. They’re neat but way too bulky to carry, he!! my 44 Ruger is more cancelable than a 4 Lb Eagle.

But he cannot be smeared as a radical kook. He’s from swing state Florida — and Florida, remarkably, has never had a candidate on a national ticket. West is also black (not that it matters, but to some, it does). Far from the liberal caricature, we live in a country where that is, by far, a net gain — especially for a black conservative.

    Allen West speaks with authority like nobody else in politics. Sometimes his rhetoric on his military service can be self-congratulatory, almost Pattonesque. And that’s slightly cliché in some corners of 2011 America. But it’s not insincere. One listens to him speak and it is evident that they are listening to a leader. West is a man for these times.
