Weekend Nice Doggies Open Comments

Cry “Havoc!” and let slip the dogs of war. Or the nice doggies of war.

Today, they’re a central part of U.S. efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan — as of early 2010 the U.S. Army had 2,800 active-duty dogs deployed (the largest canine contingent in the world).

Here’s robo-puppy!

In August 2010, The Register, a British online tech publication, reported that “top-secret, super-elite U.S. Navy SEAL special forces are to deploy heavily armoured bulletproof dogs equipped with infrared nightsight cameras and an ‘intruder communication system’ able to penetrate concrete walls.” The article also reported that the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Group had “awarded an $86,000 contract to Canadian firm K9 Storm Inc. for the supply of ‘Canine Tactical Assault Vests’ for wear by SEAL dogs.”

“I’m a good doggie.”

It was around 1960 or so and I remember riding all the way down to the Ship Channel, the Battleship Texas, the San Jacinto Monument and ultimately the Old San Jacinto Inn on bright, warm Mother’s Days with my parents and grandparents to spend the day gorging ourselves at the Inn and then walking over to the Battleship for a… Read more »

fat albert BSue won’t let me go to the movies. She says she could not stand me pointing out what is gonna happen next (even if I have never seen that movie). All the movies today in any genre follow a fairly predictable pattern. For that matter TV is the same way. BSue and I like to Netflix our movies… Read more »

MY LAST TRIP TO COSTCO Yesterday I was at my local COSTCO buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Jake, the Wonder Dog and was in the check-out line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think I had an elephant? So since I’m retired and have little… Read more »

I was reading an article about movie box office returns this summer. Apparently people in Hollywood are disappointed in our willingness to pay money to see their wares. What’s amazing isn’t the lack of understanding in Hollywood – they’ve been clueless for years. It’s the absolute fury of some of the responses, especially given that this is by no means… Read more »

I’m sure that custom is long gone in most places.

🙂 It is not gone in my little church.

BSue and I took my Mom to church this morning and treated her and Dad to their “favorite breakfast restaurant”……. Denny’s. Hey that is where they wanted to go. Pastor did a wonderful tribute to motherhood and the importance of Moms. Y’all whose Mom (and Pop) have gone on to be with the Lord, I want you to know that… Read more »

I just got the sweetest card and a rose from my son. Lovely was a little too wrapped up in her weekend to remember Mommy’s Day, which is okay. There’s a day for mothers every year – she only graduates college once. It’s nice that my son remembered me, even though I was away all weekend.

#83 Katfish: A beautiful prayer that leaves no dry eyes. Thank you. My Mom and spouse’s Mom are peacefully in heaven. When I was growing up it was still the custom for the women and girls to wear corsages to church on Mothers Day and to whatever celebration afterwards. Red if your Mom was living, white if she had passed… Read more »

If the person with the differing opinion thinks for one moment that everyone should cease all conversation because they expressed their opinion… ain’t gonna happen with me.

Tedtam Congrats to your Daughter and YOU! Wedding just around the corner, life is good!

I know it’s the way it’s supposed to be. It took about 20 years for the umbilical cord to get cut, and now I have to watch her walk away.

It just gets better,…different but better still, trust me. 😉

A very good, perhaps even inspiring article can be found here. The United States has no purpose. That is perhaps its greatest achievement. America’s founding document, its Declaration of Independence, allows that a state exists only to secure life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That’s it. There’s a curious lack of ambition in those words. The United States was… Read more »
