Pardon me for being somewhat nostalgic and morbid this Monday morning. With the upcoming changes in our family structure, reflected by the recent royal wedding, I began thinking of those things, those milestones by which we measure the progress of our lives.Β When we achieve those milestones, how many times we go through them, the ones we don’t experience, the manner in which we handled the change – these are all yardsticks of different aspects of our character on our march to the last and greatest milestone.
I remember my first day in kindergarten, my graduation from junior high, and my first kiss. Then came my first break-up.Β Along the way there were various band contests, typing and shorthand competitions, and other evaluations of my skills.Β There was the boyfriend who shouldn’t have been. The first date with my Hubby.Β My first prom, my last prom (I went to three). My tonsillectomy and my first day of college. My graduation from college. My first corporate interview that led to my first full-time job.
From there I remember my marriage, the purchase of our first house, the birth of my first child, the birth of my second.Β There were job changes and other milestones.
I remember watching the first steps on the moon, and the Challenger disaster.
Now, my daughter is graduating from college, engaged to be married, and has already started her personal schedule of milestones, the accumulation of which will define her life. My son is working hard to gain entrance in a university.Β I wish them both to have more happy ones than sad, and to learn the lessons from each step forward in life.

HEY SERGEβ
Where are the Generals telling the American people not to celebrate because it might make the Muslims mad?A question motivated more by a personal animus than it is in serious consideration of the event is niether intelligent, or one that advances understanding. What comes closest to my feeling, and that of our Generals, is MHarper’s statement:

If we still have any good terrorism experts and they say donβt give up the body, letβs do it that way. Maybe thatβs why itβs taking so long for Bammy to get the show started tonight β they are still writing his script, so he doesnβt know what to say yet.The culture that we are fighting will not see this death as an assualt on thier religion. Rather, they will see it as a legitimate victory in battle, made even moreso by the nature of the personal combat and bravery displayed in how it was achieved. I personally suspect that one reason it took so long to take OBL out was that experts recommeded against doing it with smart bombs or paid assassins in favor of the kind of brass ballz personal combat that went down.
Personally, I like to see Hamous’ method of burial occur:
1. chop him up into little pieces and feed him to the pigs
2. grind the pigs up into sausage and feed it to the dogs
3. turn the dogs loose in the Dome of the RockBut that would be seen as an assualt on thier Religion and would end up with the kind of response that came about after the Mohammed cartoons placing our troops in danger, prolonging the war, and making Victory that much harder to achieve. Muslims wll not react to our celebration and commemoration of this Victory in the same manner and the propaganda value of our doing so, especially at Ground Zero, will be enormous. We are the stronger horse once again, and we did it without defiling anyone or anything and if we dispose of his body with the proper religious observation it will be seen as a military victory and respected in that culture as such.
The only thing that’s hurting us right now is the way Obama is handling Syria and Libya. A couple of quick reprises of the Bin Laden raid, but with Momo and Bashar in the starring roles, would go a long way towards ending this war with something that resembles permanence.
For those who want informed opinion on this, unflavored by personal feelings, go here and read the discussions of the professionals fighting this war.

OBL is dead, yes! Happy to hear his demise was up close and personal and his last vision was that of the US military and not some unseen, not knowing it was coming drone shot. But I’m picky in my revenge. Also proud to see the cheers, I thought we had forgotten.

Details are beginning to look a bit disturbing. Not the actualy assumption of room temperature by one of the most evil humans to walk the earth, but the location of the action.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) β U.S. forces finally found al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden not in the rugged mountains of Afghanistan’s border, but in a million-dollar compound in an upscale suburb of Pakistan’s capital, with his youngest wife, U.S. officials said early on Monday.
As reported in the British press:
The compound is just “a stone’s throw” and less than 200 yards from the Pakistan Military Academy, an elite military training centre, which is Pakistan’s equivalent to Britain’s Sandhurst, one local journalist from Abbottabad told the BBC.
Other reports have put the distance at 800 yards.
But the compound lies well within Abbottabad’s military cantonment – it is likely the area would have had a constant and significant military presence and checkpoints.
A comment at SWJ brings this into perspective:
So I’m having a look at the Google map for the location of where OBL was zapped in relation to local points of interest.
Pakistan Military Academy
Combined Military Hospital
Pakistan Military Training Grounds
Military housing and other military facilities all over the placesnip
Imagine it’s 1955, and the Russians just found Hitler living in a somewhat larger than average Levittown house in West Point, New York living amongst a whole bunch of current and prior service soldiers. How is it even POSSIBLE, or more importantly, SPINNABLE?
Two things should be readily apparent:
1. OBL could not have been living there without the knowledge and consent of at least a portion of the cadre of high ranking Pakistani military.
2. We could not have gotten him without thier cooperation or knowledge, or at least the cooperation and knowledge of a different faction within the Pakistani military.
Getting in, doing the deed, and getting out might have been possible to achieve, but it would more likley have been a suicide raid (and I do believe there would have been plenty of volunteers for such a raid). Getting in, doing the deed, and then getting out with the body would have required the kind of transportation support that could only have been achieved with cooperation from Pakistani government support of some kind.
Another commenter at SWJ voices his concerns about this, and what it might mean:
This is wonderful emotionally satisfying news and salutes to all involved in pulling it off, but I am going to make a very dark comment that I hope isn’t true. Why did the Pak Army/ISI give up OBL now after all these years? We have never had the nerve to creditably threaten them or even strongly condemn them in the past. What changed? What I hope to hell didn’t happen was we made a deal, they give us AQ and we give them Afghanistan.
In the short term, this would actually not be a bad trade. In the long term, it would pizzoff the Indians to no end, niether would the Russians be real happy. But seeing as how Afghanistann is a shizzle pile of monumental proportions, I see no real problem with it, especially if the deal involves some kind of agreement for the use of bases to respond to Iranian agression and to keep pressure on thier Eastern border, and to engage in more black ops inside Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan against the fundamentalist Musilm extremists that threaten both the United States and Pakistan.

It will be interesting to find out if General Petreuas’ comments vis a vis the Koran burning were motiviated at all by his fear of the reaction of those inside Pakistan with whom negotiations were going on to get this thing done. It truly would have been tragic if the operation to kill Bin Laden had fallen apart because Terry Jones needed money.

Osama and his ilk are surely manly men; US kills Osama bin Laden decade after 9/11 attacks
Three adult males were also killed in the raid, including one of bin Laden’s sons, whom officials did not name. One of bin Laden’s sons, Hamza, is a senior member of al-Qaida. U.S. officials also said one woman was killed when she was used as a shield by a male combatant, and two other women were injured.

#6 Thatβs a pretty lame stretch. It wouldn’t be the first time such things have occurred. The history of the indian Wars is rife with that kind of thing where negotiations and treaties with one faction of a tribe were undone by actions of others unconnected with the negotiations. I have little doubt that Petreaus’ recent elevation to head of CIA is connected to this particular operation. He has proven himself to be exceptionally adept at navigating his way through the (literally) Byzantine nature of Islamic cultural and tribal nuances to great effect with outcomes that have been positive towards ultimate victory rather than short term emotional gratification.

And lets face it. The culture with which we are dealing resembles that of the Indians of the American West, particularly the Comanche, more than it does anything else in our military experience, with the exception of the Moro War and Phillipine Insurrection.

βCept Terry Jones DID burn a Koran and bin Laden IS STILL dead.Agreed.
But you can’t logically say that buring the Koran would result in a violent world wide Islamic reaction while at the same time it would be a stretch to contemplate that it might have a negative impact on negotiations with some Pakistani Generals, and then make statements calculated to minimize such a reaction in order to achieve the greater goal.

And occams Razor tells me that its far more likley that the public statements made by military and political leaders in this country privy to what was going on was more motivated towards a successful conclusion to an operation that had been going on for four years than nit was towards intentional abrogation of our First Amendment Rights by our military leaders as some have intimated here and elsewhere.

Hamas is a political organization using the religion to maintain and aquire political power.
Seems to me that is exactly the kind of culture that we are fighting. No, we’re not fighting Islam. On that point I agree. But those who will use Islam to gain political power will use Bin Laden’s death or any other number of things to whip up people into a frenzy. We can’t be politically correct enough to make them happy. Let’s just quit trying.

Under SHARIA LAW, which is the general goal of mooooooslims globally, Islam is political, social, business, and religious. It is involved in and dictates every facet of life. Are there some moooslims who do not want sharia. . . . yes,
clearly so; that does not negate the reality that the vast majority globally do want sharia on a global basis. That describes the end of freedom as we know it. -

FIFYI am making a point and once again you dodge and show your hypocrisy. Goofy pastor burns a book, Generals get all weak in the bowels in fear for what is coming. Now they kill the titular head of a terrorist organization one would think they would be worried about the repercussions. Americans were dancing in the streets and cheering. Wow that has really gotta urinate off the bad guys. And what about winning the hearts of the people huh? You know, those poor souls that wanna kills us. They are just misguided waifs. This has got to be a real set back for that cause.

And there’s nothing politically correct about killing a guy and dumping his body in the ocean.

After bin Laden was killed in a raid by U.S. forces in Pakistan, senior administration officials said the body would be handled according to Islamic practice and tradition.
OK. I don’t have a problem with that. But I don’t have a problem with people in the US dancing in the streets to celebrate his death either. A very bad guy is dead and that is a very good thing.

Agreed and agreed. I started out the moring saying that the propaganda value of these celebrations, particularly at Ground Zero, is incalcuable. FWIW, I’ll point out that this is the reason why our enemy incites the same kind of demonstrations (but admittedly with attendant violence) over there.

Jones had his 15 minutes of fame and the Islamofascists got their 15 minutes of righteous indignation before the fawning Western media. OBL is now chum. To try and connect the two events to bolster your weak argument against our 1st amendment rights is a stretch.

Jones had his 15 minutes of fame and the Islamofascists got their 15 minutes of righteous indignation before the fawning Western media. OBL is now chum. To try and connect the two events to bolster your weak argument against our 1st amendment rights is a stretch.Timing is everything in life, and especially so in military operations. Terry Jones lit the Koran at a time when it is undoubtable that we were negotiating the details of this operation with at least a faction of the Pakistani military, if not the government as a whole.
News reports say that this operation has been in process for 4 years. That pretty much coincides with the Benazir Bhutto assassination
The CIA has concluded that members of al-Qaeda and allies of Pakistani tribal leader Baitullah Mehsud were responsible for last month’s assassination of former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto, and that they also stand behind a new wave of violence threatening that country’s stability, the agency’s director, Michael V. Hayden, said in an interview
We don’t know yet when Bin Laden became a guest of the Pakistani military. It could have been as early as Tora Bora, but I doubt it. I do believe that at some point they became aware of his location, and when Al Queda started making its moves to get the Pakistani nukes, they took him in. We don’t know when we became aware of this. We could have known for a long while and been negotiating with the Pakis, or we could have found out recently and presented them with the damning facts and used that as leverage.
But if its possible for the Muslim world to break out in violent protest over the burning of a Koran, why is it a stretch to think that it might affect negotiations with the muslims who not only knew where Bin Laden was, but who were holding him in protective custody at one of the most secure military installations in their country?

Jones had his 15 minutes of fame and the Islamofascists got their 15 minutes of righteous indignation before the fawning Western media. OBL is now chum. To try and connect the two events to bolster your weak argument against our 1st amendment rights is a stretch.Timing is everything in life, and especially so in military operations. Terry Jones lit the Koran at a time when it is undoubtable that we were negotiating the details of this operation with at least a faction of the Pakistani military, if not the government as a whole.
News reports say that this operation has been in process for 4 years. That pretty much coincides with the Benazir Bhutto assassinationThe CIA has concluded that members of al-Qaeda and allies of Pakistani tribal leader Baitullah Mehsud were responsible for last month’s assassination of former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto, and that they also stand behind a new wave of violence threatening that country’s stability, the agency’s director, Michael V.

It looks like the schizzle may soon hit the fan.
Iranian state television ran a report on Monday saying Israeli military aircraft were massing at a US air base in Iraq for a strike on Iran.
The report appeared on the website of Press TV. Jerusalem said it had no knowledge of such a strike plan and Iraq’s air force commander denied the Iranian report.

Good morning Hamsters. The front arrived before 6 am, and it was a delightful 61 long into the morning. Clouds abound but no rain in sight. Weather radar is temporarily nonfunctioning on the long range so no hint of what might come this afternoon.
Yea for the Navy Seals, yea for the years of interrogations at Gitmo under the Bush Administration that got the info chain. Recall that O forbade enhanced interrogations (whatever he meant by that) once he was immaculated. So Pakistan gave Osama cover and shelter. Didn’t George Bush say that those who harbor terrorists were equally targets for retribution? And what is O’s view on that, or is he voting present–again?
Where’s the photo of the body (or what was left of it)? Where’s the DNA evidence? Agree we want to see the long form of the death certificate. π

Are we supposed to say “hearing impaired” or “auditorily disabled”?? More PC STOOOOOPIDITY!

#35 SD: More from the linkie-thingie:
Alfred Stewart, 31, was partying at the Ocean’s Eleven Lounge in Hallendale Beach, Fla., with some friends who were also deaf on Saturday night when the group’s signing caught the eye of gang-banger Barbara Lee.
The 45-year-old Lee though the group was throwing gang signs at her, and responded by flashing gang signs back at them, cops said.
This oxygen thief has been a gang banger for how long; I mean she is 45 years old?!? What is she, the den mother or ‘ho of last resort’ or what? Multiple counts of attempted capital murder sounds about right, she deserves the big dirty spike to hell. Or maybe they could fire-up “old sparky” and let her ‘ride the lightning’?

We just found out that we are required to have TWO certified flagmen if we are going to park our trailer on the street while working.
For only a few hours.
Even on quiet residential streets, with little traffic.
Or, we can have one officer -how does that figure for traffic safety?
We’ve been doing this for years w/o flagmen, and have had no accidents.
And we are told to just “pass the cost on to the customer”./spits

re: bin Ladin becoming βchumβ, Well Done Obama. This is perhaps the first thing he has done that I actually agree with.Interesting perspective on that can be found here.
Finally, President Barack Obama deserves great credit for taking the risk of ordering this raid. He likely knew that the past record of such high-visibility raids was not good and that much more can go wrong with these operations than go right. He must also have known that another Desert One fiasco could have been disastrous on several levels.
However, I disagree with him on this conclusion:
Most notable was Obamaβs willingness to shatter Americaβs relationship with Pakistan in order to take a gamble on getting bin Laden. For this raid is a black day for Pakistan and its relationship with the United States. As the White House background briefing on the raid makes clear, the United States kept the raid completely concealed from the Pakistani government.
The Seal Team engaged in 45 minute fire fight at a compound a couple of football fields away from the Pakistan Military Academy, Combined Military Hospital, Pakistan Military Training Grounds, and Military housing and other military facilities all over the place, to iclude the residences of retired Pakistani military officers, then withdrew with the bodies of at least one dead terrorist, adn there was absolutley no response from the Pakistani Army or Air Force until after the action had been concluded. That simply defies credulity.
It looks to me that the Pakistanis would rather have thier people believe that they were punked by the US rather than admit they are cooperating with the infidels.

Obama the hypocrite.
In November 2009 the Obama Administration charged 4 Navy SEALS with assault for slapping terrorist mastermind Ahmed Hashim Abed and giving him a fat lip.
One of the Navy SEALS was cleared of charges in April 2010.
The SEALS were accused of mistreating a wanted Iraqi terrorist who was behind the murder of 4 US contractors in Fallujah in 2004. -

Oh, quite a bit actually. Despite a little initial whining on the part of my daughter because we were taking them to a movie that wasn’t a kid movie, I think both of them are actually a little better for having watched it. My son wants to read the book now.
On the technical merits of the film, I was not disappointed in the least. Tells me a lot about what the opinions of professional movie critics mean (or don’t mean) to me. And I was pleasantly surprised at how many people were in the theater. Don’t get me wrong; it wasn’t packed. But it sure wasn’t empty either. I’d estimate it was filled to ~25% capacity.
I didn’t see any other kids there besides ours which I think is a shame. The bulk of the crowd looked to be in their mid 50s min. ranging up to some folks I’d actually call elderly. I tend to think younger people are going to be the ones who can really benefit from watching this though. I’d guess that most of the people who watched had already read the book, but that’s purely conjecture on my part.
The story line was consistent with the book. Obviously there has to be some omissions for length though. It’s a 3 parter as it is! My family is looking forward to seeing the rest of this movie as it’s made. Money well spent as far as I’m concerned.

The producers had originally concieved of it as a 12-14 hour miniseries which would have helped with exposition and character developement. They opted to go with the three part theatrical release when the agreement they had with the Rand Institute, which owns the rights, was getting uncomfortably close to running out and they hadn’t gotten a cable outlet to agree to present it.

Yep, it’s all City of Houston crap. They’ve been hiking their permit fees and permit requirements HUGE over the past year or two. Not only have the permits doubled or tripled or more in cost, they are making us get more of them.
If we just had one work truck, we wouldn’t need to get these permits. Since we have to haul a trailer for our backhoe and air compressor, we have to get these other permits.
Hubby’s about had it. He’s talking about quitting doing meters and working for the school district, and doing service jobs on weekends, maybe do some irrigation meters. Irrigation meters don’t require the heavy equipment. This bullwiss from the city is driving us crazy. It makes no sense.

That makes sense. The three part format doesn’t bother me. In a way, if it makes people want to dig into the book (like my son for example) to get more background, maybe it’s good that they leave certain elements a little sketchy.

Allow me to add even more.
The main reason I beleive that we had the cooperation of the Pakistani Government is that we are dealing with President We Can’t Attack Anybody Without a Concencus Among Other Governments. I don;t think he would have agreed to it without a nod from the Pakistanis (or concluding a deal with them that favors them disproportionatly), nor would he have taken the chances of the op going south the way it did with Desert 1. The only way to insure that would be an agreement with the Pakis not to respond to a military action in thier own backyard. As it is, one of the Blackhawks despatched was either shot down or crashed due to mechanical problems. This would have complicated extraction exponentially, unless the team could be reasonably sure that there would be no response from Paki forces near the scene.

I suspect that the sequels will do much better than the original. It wouldn’t be the first movie to do so. There’s a couple of franchises that did well after folks watched a movie on DVD and enjoyed it enough to go to the theaters for the sequels.
I remember that Shrek did so badly in its intial release that they were giving out free tickets at Krogers (Elizabeth and I got a pair). That spread word of mouth and the resulting DVD rentals went through the roof, which made for Sequel Heaven for the producers, actors, and product marketing folks.

Sarge,
If I may interject. I have not seen a lot of hoopla concerning OBL’s demise in the Middle-Eastern Press or not at least to the extent that it is in US Newspapers.
Checkout Al Jazzera if you doubt. Is it possible that the times and events in the Middle-East have passed him by? One did not see any OBL posters or American flag burning during the recent “citizen” uprisings in the Arab dictatorships.
I suspect that OBL had overstayed his welcome and usefulness. We were allowed to evict him.
Then again…I could be wrong.

Despite what some of the self appointed experts on the Internet who critize the tactics used by our Generals have said, we have been very successful in knocking the absolute dog shizzle out of Al Queda. They did it by recognizing that Islam is a conglomeration of sometimes competing schisms and tribes rather than as a monolithic structure, and that Q was only one very small part of that puzzle.
Our Generals, Petreaus in particular, has made us look like the strong horse instead of the blind giant. I think that, as well as AQ’s over reaching within Pakistan, is what ultimately led to the Pakis to allow us to evict him.
The danger is if the citzenry in general sees this as “Mission Accomplished.”
And I still want to know how much of the store Obama gave away in order to get the Pakis to go along with this.

Point #1) That danger will manifest itself by a blind embrace of members of “that” group of people. This will enable the violent jihadis to sneak in under the radar and gain valuable strategic positions like: Drinking water purification plant operator, air traffic controller, cop, food plant operator, etc. Just imagine if our water supply got contaminated in a big area like Houston; how much poison would it take to render lake Houston undrinkable/untreatable?
Point #2) The potential for malfeasance on the part of dumbo in this case is staggering. Did he give the UN a green light to occupy prior to the next election? Did he abrogate our 2nd amendment rights? Did he “sign over” the US to the NWO? Only time will tell. -

Point #2) The potential for malfeasance on the part of dumbo in this case is staggering. Did he give the UN a green light to occupy prior to the next election? Did he abrogate our 2nd amendment rights? Did he “sign over” the US to the NWO? Only time will tell. -
Point #2) The potential for malfeasance on the part of dumbo in this case is staggering. Did he give the UN a green light to occupy prior to the next election? Did he abrogate our 2nd amendment rights? Did he βsign overβ the US to the NWO? Only time will tell.
Its more likely that he gave control of Afghanistan to Pakistan for its cooperation and a promise to destroy the Taliban and grant the use of some bases, giving us a better reason to leave by the promised date. The long term problem with that is this gives Pakistan a secure flank and supply route if it ever comes to war with India. It would give them some access to the Caspian Sea through Turkmenistan if any of her Indian Ocean ports are ever closed.

#68 Imagine that your scenario is correct:
Its more likely that he gave control of Afghanistan to Pakistan for its cooperation and a promise to destroy the Taliban and grant the use of some bases, giving us a better reason to leave by the promised date. Now imagine that the M-Zombies take over Pakistan and start the same crap that is emmanating from Iran and Syria, dya think that we could get some real cooperation with India and squash the region from both sides, including Iran? USA coming from the North/West from Iraq and India from south/east, would make a real powerful hammer and anvil situation. If India ever REALLY got her dander up against the paki’s the pakis would not stand a chance. Let’s not forget that they both have nukes.

There’s only one thing we do that riles up the Islamofascists. We exist. They don’t need any other excuse. Case in point:
βWhat was done by the Americans is forbidden by Islam and might provoke some Muslims,β said another Islamic scholar from Iraq, Abdul-Sattar al-Janabi, who preaches at Baghdadβs famous Abu Hanifa mosque. βIt is not acceptable and it is almost a crime to throw the body of a Muslim man into the sea. The body of bin Laden should have been handed over to his family to look for a country or land to bury him.β
What about the bodies of the 3000 people, some of them Muslim, killed on 9/11? Many were never found. What about the constant beheadings of Muslims and Christians we had to watch? Where was the outrage on the Islamic street? To hell with these people. I would have made a videotape of the pigs eating his stinking carcass and sent it to al Jazeera. That would send a message – mess with Americans, they feed you to the pigs after they let your dead body ripen in the sun, then they feed the pigs to the dogs. Osama becomes ManPigDog. If there’s any creature on earth less deserving of respect it was this one.

Ummmmmm—
According to the “all the muslims are all the same” theory so voluably espoused here, the M-Zombies are already in charge in Pakistan.
Perhaps you’re moving over to the side that says there are some Muslims we should be concerned with, and others we should not be.
If it came to war with India, Pakistan would nuke them and they would nuke the Pakis. Not much spilt milk about Pakistan in that case, but India is too important to our economy and well being for us to do anything that would give the Pakis an edge or feel more secure in contemplating a war with India.
As to launching any kind of offensive towards Iran based in India that would have to go first through the mountains of Pakistan, then through Afghanistan—which is only acessible from Pakistan through the Khyber pass. Not really militarily feasible and the endstate more achieveable through other means and avenues. Unless we’re already in Afghanistan, which is whyn its stupid for us to leave, and why I’m worried that Barry has set this whole thing up to make it easier for us to do so.

When you see TWO generals going to ONE AMERICAN CITIZEN pleading with him not to burn the Koran, well if it looks weak to me, i know it looks weak to the bad guys.

I am not talking about world wide body of Muslims riots in the streets. Simple above nailed that
ObamasOsama’s day in the sub has passed. Al Queda has not been defeated, they are very much alive and well and they are still in Iraq. I am talking about the reprisals that are sure to come and they will come. And my argument with you remains the same, if they are so worried about some twit preacher in Florida causing a revolt, what makes you think there will not be death and destruction form our killing of a figure head? Just sit back and watch Serge’./Side note. I have not been consciously this proud of our military in a long while. I am always proud of them for the job they do but this is a red letter day. Just a shame that two Generals had to become Obama twits in the name of Obamalitics.

Right now I’m saying that it looks like Petreaus’ reaction may have been more from concern about the reaction of those in Pakistani government with whom we were negotiating. Whether it was the government itself, some disaffected military officers, or some local constabulary or military who they bribed we don’t know.
Reports state that we became awarew of the site and the probability that OBL was there in August of last year. Intelligence efforts would have begun at that time in order to plan and execute the raid, and that effort would almost certainly include identifying and obtaining resources and personnel near the site that would be able to give up to the minute information, if not outright assistance, right up until the moment our guys started rappelling down the ropes. The fact that they were so close to several military sites and no quick response to the assault was made by local forces suggests to me that those assets included officers at a command level sufficient to be able to give orders to delay the dispatch of local security forces. Given that all such assets would be muslim, its natural to be concerned about thier personal religious reaction and any effect it may have on the outcome of the raid.
So it seems less and less liley that Petreaus reaction was that he was “weak in the bowels” about world wide reaction, especially when one considers that reaction to the Koran burning was limited mainly to Afghanistan, and then only to a couple of towns where Taliban presence is or was relatively high.
And apparently, nobodyn in our military, Petreaus included, is all weak in the bowels about any reaction to the killing of Bin Laden.
As far as that goes, Petreaus is leaving a trail of bloody baby killer corpses behind him. he’s won one war and was cerainly deeply involved in the operation that took Bin Laden out. To call a man with a record like that “weak in the bowels” is, quite franklyu, an insult the man does not deserve.

But its still stupid to give away Afghanistan when you have it and already have your troops on thier border in favor of a assault from India. For that matter, if you’re going to enter Iran on the coastal route, you’re better off with a seaborne assault across Hormuz than you are fighting across Pakistan from India.

Naw only when some half cracked preacher decides to burn a Koran. THEN they get all weak in the bowels and decide it is time to try and suspend the first amendment.
NONE NONE of the Generals I worked for would have done that for any president. Not one. Showing that type of cowardice in the face of an enemy would never have happened. They believed in protecting our freedoms, not even suggesting that one person’s 1st amendments rights be suspended for a moment.

95 Boney,
You know…I used to think that crab meat, shrimp, and lobster were all unclean. (scaleless fishes of the sea).
I have some Arab relatives and we were all together at a family get-together when I noticed one of my nieces eating some crabmeat salad. I asked her about it not being halal and she educated me.
Crabs, lobsters, and shrimp are not fish. They are crustaceans. Catfish, eels, and sharks would not be kosher or halal as they have no scales. I find this amusing because shark is a lot cleaner meat than crabmeat, but the dietary laws are the dietary laws.

Osama’s funeral occured on board the USS CARL VINSON, a fitting place as the first air sorties flown in the war on Afghanistan were flown from her flight deck. It is rumored that just as it began a message was broadcast over the 1MC (PA system for landlubbers):

Stories emerging about the mission that got bin Laden point very clearly that the early decision to capture and interrogate al Qaeda terrorists paid dividends in intelligence over the years. Captured terrorists broke and spilled information about details large and small, among them the name of bin Ladenβs favorite personal courier. That was important because OBLβs Abbottabad compound had no phones or internet connection. He had to rely on personal messengers, and having found his, U.S. forces could find him. It is also now beyond debate that taking the fight to al Qaeda in Afghanistan was the right thing to do, and staying there enabled our forces to fly in and kill the terrorist. Had our forces not been basing in Afghanistan, they might have had no place from which to move in and get the kill.
President Bush took a great deal of criticism from many quarters, including the current president, for the decisions regarding captured terrorists. He was dubbed a βwar criminal,β a designation many on the left hesitated to place on the author of 9-11 itself. But it was his decision to treat them as illegal enemy combatants, and it was a decision for which he weathered a storm of criticism. And now we know, it was a decision that set America on the course to get bin Laden.
Vey well said.
I love the title of the post as well.

Mr Seagull,
I found it to be a prudent policy to maintain a good distance from the “head shed”. Officers above the rank of Major always made me a little nervous.
It was never a good ideal to be so familiar with the upper brass that they knew your name. I suppose it is all different now and everyone sits around the campfire and sings Kombaya.

Wikipedia has a good description of what a DD214 is and is used for.DD Form 214 is the capstone military service document, as it represents the complete, verified record of a service member’s time in the military, awards and medals, and other pertinent service information, such as promotions, combat service or overseas service, Military Occupational Specialty identifiers and record of training and schools completed.

Thanx. Bet you don’t want to compare your DD214 with John Kerry’s DD214. Isn’t he, like, the most decorated person in military history when comparing medals to time served?

126 Seagull,
One of my mom’s brothers was in the old Air Corps and flew B-27 Liberators in Europe. He got shot down in the Ploeski air raids, broke his back getting out of the plane, and spent a awful time in a German POW Camp.
He never talked about it, but I know now that he had to be some kind of tough to climb into that bomber knowing the odds were terrible on coming back.
I had other uncle who were in the Pacific. None of them ever talked about it. I remember telling my favorite uncle (former Marine) that I had joined the Marines. He proceeded to tell me how stupid I was.

However, if Barry made a deal with them that gives them effective control of Afghanistan after weβve left, then he has effectively helped thier defensive posture as it applies to any futre conflict with India.
Right. Pockeystahn doesn’t even have effective control of Pockeystahn. I’ll put my money on 1.2 billion Indians in the midst of an industrial revolution over 170 million cave-dwelling inbreds still living in the dark ages.

Hamous;
I had a couple of roomates from India in my college years. One in particular was what you’d call jingoistic. He criticized the US for condemning India from developing nukes when Pakistan had nukes for a while previous to India developing them. Although I got tired of his superior nationalism and anti-Pakistan rants, I found that specific rant educational.
Also, this probably explains some of the zombies in your #30.

Your friend was wrong. It’s the other way around. India tested its first nuclear weapon in 1974. Pockeystahn didn’t test one until the late ’90s. Both countries started a nuclear program with the intention of making weapons in the mid 60s.

Crud, I’m probably mixing up my details. I know he expressed some outrage over something the US protested regarding nukes between the two countries. Maybe he was angry that Pakistan finally got nukes and thus countered India’s advantage. I know I was impressed about something in his rant. π

Maybe I confused this with something my roomate said.
Pakistan Blasts U.S.-India Nuke Deal
I was well out of college by then.
Shakti Nuclear Weapons Tests May 11-13, 1998
This, I believe, resulted in some sanctions by the US and Japan against India but I would not have been on college campus at that time.
Perhaps he referred to some previous friction/pressure by the US on India not to develope their nuclear program.

Well, the dark areas in the distance look like lakes. No? Cloud shadows?
I also went and looked at Google Maps satellite views around Midland, and there are unmistakeable converging channels south of town, also at least one lake.
