The Battle of San Jacinto

Today marks the 175th Anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto. As the inscription on the monument reads:

Measured by its results, San Jacinto was one of the decisive battles of the world. The freedom of Texas from Mexico won here led to annexation and to the Mexican War, resulting in the acquisition by the United States of the States of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California, Utah, and parts of Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas and Oklahoma. Almost one-third of the present area of the American nation, nearly a million square miles of territory, changed sovereignty.

    G’Morning all

God bless Texas, and thank you Sam.

Since its arrival in the museum over 70 years ago, a bust of Sam Houston sculpted by Gutzon Borglum has languished in storage at the San Jacinto Museum of History. Borglum, famous for designing the monumental presidents’ heads at Mount Rushmore, was also known for his public works of art honoring important people and events in American history. The 33-inch tall paraffin wax bust of Houston has never been able to be publicly displayed.

To commemorate the 175th anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto fought in 1836, there are plans to stabilize and conserve this important work of art, acquired by the museum in 1939 as a gift from historian and museum founder Louis Wiltz Kemp. The museum is raising funds for the conservation and exhibition which is expected to cost approximately $50,000.

Six people were arrested this week and accused of luring a 15-year-old boy to a Florida home, shooting him several times, burning his body in a fire pit and putting the remains into paint cans, authorities said.

That’s a wee bit more than “mean”.

This makes me smile, a big slap in the face of the hollywood establishment. I have not seen it yet but hope to make some time this weekend to do so. I have read the book two or three times and while I usually skip the smalchy parts, I always enjoy the concept.

As you may remember I tried to go Galt last year. Quit a great job and hit the road. The idea was work a whole lot less, make less and avoid the tax burden. Well, tax time came and went and guess what? I still made to too much and had to pay. I guess if you’re a producer you just can’t help but produce. I may have to try again in the future with a better plan.

Alleged concubine, that she was in El Presidente’s tent is embellished history. I remember reading her name as Emily Morgan. Recent research has revealed her name to be Emily West.
