Babies are awesome. They can also be a lot of work and cause great worry when they get sick or hurt. In return, they give you lots of love. They can be a source of great amusement.
You can play dress-up:
Teach them how to play with food:
Eventually they’ll get tired, so you’ll have to give them their pacifier:
After baby wakes up from his nap, it’s off to the store with mommy. Sometimes mommy will need to take care of some business, but what to do with baby when there’s no duck tape handy?
Just because baby is still small, doesn’t mean he can’t learn. One of life’s most important lessons is that we all have to pull our own weight. But what can baby do? He can’t walk or carry things. He just skootches along the floor. Well, put him to work using his special gifts.
One day, he will thank you for how well-adjusted he is.

Cute pics, wagon. I like the food dressup and teeth on the picifier the most. Wish I had that binki when my younglings were at that age.

Squawk #172 yesterday;
I refuse to enter into these holy wars.
Good for you, Squawk. And, frankly, that’s quite Christian of you not to do so.
I do go to church to worship and fellowship.
In terms of congregational gatherings, think these are the two primary reasons churches exist.
Is “congregational gatherings” redundant?

Family and I are going to Montgomery County for an Easter egg hunt. Should be fun. Don’t know when I’ll return.

O.K. Hamsters, I have been fighting personal demons and I have a confession to make. I’m not as conservative as you may think. I actually vote Democrat and here are my reasons why:
1. Because I believe oil companies’ profits of 4%* on a gallon of gas are obscene, but the government taxing the same gallon of gas at 15% isn’t.
*(google oil companies’ profits of 4% for a fact sheet.)2. Because I believe the government will do a better job of spending the money I earn than I would.
3. Because Freedom of Speech is fine as long as nobody is offended by it.
4. Because I’m way too irresponsible to own a gun, and I know that my local police are all I need to protect me from murderers and thieves.
5. Because I believe that people who can’t tell us if it will rain on Friday can tell us that the polar ice caps will melt away in ten years if I don’t start driving a Prius.
6. Because I’m not concerned about millions of babies being aborted so long as we keep all death row inmates alive.
7. Because I think illegal aliens have a right to free health care, education, and Social Security benefits.
8. Because I believe that business should not be allowed to make profits for themselves. They need to break even and give the rest away to the government for redistribution as the Democrats see fit.
9. Because I believe liberal judges need to rewrite the Constitution every few days to suit some fringe kooks who would never get their agendas past the voters.
10.Because I think that it’s better to pay billions to people who hate us for their oil, but not drill our own because it might upset some endangered beetle or gopher.
11.Because while we live in the greatest, most wonderful country in the world, I was promised “HOPE AND CHANGE”.
12.Because my head is so firmly planted up my @ss, it’s unlikely that I’ll ever have another point of view.

While I’m on the subject I’ve noticed that Democrats are like a herd of cattle:
A few of them see each day as the last roundup, others as another opportunity to stampede and all the rest see it as an exciting new opportunity to eat grass and point in the same direction as the other cows. -

My “adopted” couple has been doing a lot of cooking lately, and keeping the kitchen clean. They, daughter, her BF, and guests were up way past my bedtime last night, with pool and pianos in the living room, and beer pong in kitchen.
I haven’t cooked recently, but since there are more folks here, I’m re-opening Bob’s Brunch Grille. On the menu today: Eggs any way ya like ‘um, sausage (pattie or linkie) and of course, my nearly world famous griddle biscuits.
I put a batch of sausage on the griddle and started brew #2. I figure the aromas will be arousing the young folks in a minute.

Adee, I’m trying to shove 2#’s of poop in a 1# pail today. I picked berries yesterday and am still cleaning them. Not sure if I have enough for a batch of jam but for sure some cobblers. I’ll try to make it to Sugarland to see the movies, but I’ve got to get the dewberries canned today before I go to the tea party in The Woodlands. Sure wished I could transfer the tickets, but nooooooo. 🙁

She’s the sweetest person that you’d ever meet but I get the feeling that I’d never want to peeve her off……

Geez, with a little more work you could really have something cool and worthy of the effort. Something really to be proud of.
Ingredients
10#s of poo
One (1) 5# sackDirections
Stuff 10#s of poo into the 5# sack.Result
One (1) blivettBlivetts are so much cooler than a pail. You will win friends and influence people with your blivett making prowess. What ya got now is just a pail over flowing with poo.
AND when you are finished displaying your blivett to all your friends, you can set it on fire on your neighbors front porch, ring the doorbell and run like crazy. Stand back and watch hilarity ensue. You cannot do THAT with a pail of poo. The most you can hope for is your neighbor kicking the can and possibly miss stepping on/in the poo.
You can thank me later.

But please don’t tell her mom I said so. She gets mad when I point that out. Really mad.

The Atlas Shrugged movie is really well done. Even the wife wants to see it again. The movie only goes through book one of three. I reckon they want to see if this makes any money before doing the rest.

Atlas Shrugged review by the New Wissin York Post. My prediction, having not yet seen the movie, is that the critics will not like it and give it poor reviews while the stoooooopid, ignent, unwashed masses who actually make the country work will love it. I predict that the movie will be a huge and profitable hit.

That’s awesome. Some years ago the only way I could have convinced Mrs. Darren to have another baby would have been to guarantee twins. Since I couldn’t do that we didn’t have any more. There was something about having an even number of children that settled well with Mrs. Darren.

36 & 37,
Most folks watch a movie to be entertained. If Atlas Shurgged The Movie is entertaining then it will succeed and perhaps some of the message will be retained at least 20 – 30 minutes. It probably needs some fiery car crashes and vampires.
One reads a book to learn and be entertained. The message gleaned from a book endures a lot longer than the next commercial break.
I can’t remember if I have EVER seen a movie adapted from a popular book actually do justice to the book. Why would this particular book and its movie be any different?

Hmm. Two of my all-time favorite movies were good screenplays based on mediocre novels: Bridge on the River Kwai and Planet of the Apes. Both books written by French author Pierre Boulle.

And now I think about it, both the book and the movie Jaws were pretty good, although a lot was left out of the movie. Same for Psycho — I liked both. Guess all my examples are from centuries ago, if you wanna hold that against me. 🙂

#44 Simple:
Watch Schindler’s List, directed by Steven Spielberg and based on the novel Schindler’s Ark by Thomas Keneally.
The movie is at least as good as the book. In my humble, but informed opinion it’s the finest movie ever made. It also has a message that will not soon be forgotten.
Also try the 1959 version of Ben Hur, directed by William Wyler from a book of the same name by General Lew Wallace. The book is mediocre, the film is simply superb. Once again the message of the film is direct and enduring.

There are those who would disagree, but I believe that the film adaptations of The Lord of The Rings trilogy, while taking necessary liberties to adapt the books to the screen, were nevertheless faithful and successful, and did full justice to JRR Tolkien’s vision.

I was at the same showing of Atlas Shrugged in Sugar Land as gtotracker (#34). It is very well done and nails the socialist/government is good/ spread the wealth agenda perfectly. It’s also prescient regarding what’s happening now. One of the slimy politician characters is a cross between Bawney Fwank and Unca Teddy Kennedy. A movie definitely worth seeing. It likely makes Hollywood nervous, being an indy on a modest budget and all that. 🙂
The review in Friday’s Chron. was done by a San Francisco Chronicle movie reviewer, and it was surprisingly favorable in places in a grudging way. He said it jumped from subject to subject and was hard to follow at the start. Nonsense. Has he never seen a James Bond movie?
The secretary of Fort Bend County Tea Party Society asked the AMC Theater management what the attendance was at the 1:35 pm showing: 167. Not bad. Will definitely see Parts 2 and 3.

a movie adapted from a popular book actually do justice to the book
True Grit comes to mind as one that does justice to the book, the latest one, that is.
Same goes for Dances with Wolves.
Lonesome Dove nailed it.
Once An Eagle and Roots also come to mind as does Gone With The Wind.
I agree with the assessment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy Fat Albert mentioned above.
I think the first step to making a good movie from a good book is allowing the director to determine the length of the movie or, as is being done with Atlas Shrugged, breaking it up into sections. The “mini-series” craze on TV of the late ’70s is the way it should be done, IMHO. The two worst adaptations that come to mind are Dune and The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy. Both of thoswe should have gone the long form and sequel route to do the subject matter justice. Dune was later done as a TV Mini Series, but did suffer from the lack of a special effects budget that a major motion picture would bring.

What? “Spending reductions in the tax code”? The tax code isn’t where we spend, it’s where we collect, and that…. ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I guess what you said is tax “code”, code for raising taxes. You managed to talk about a tax hike as a spending reduction. Can we afford that and the royalty checks you’re going to have to send to George Orwell? That’s the weirdest way of… just say “tax hike”! That’s like saying, “I’m not going on a diet, I’m going to add calories to my excluded food intake!”

53 Mr Seagull,
You are easily entertained.
I read far more books than I watch movies. Oh, I sometimes have to have to sit thru some cable offering with my grandson. His taste tend toward explosions and autos doing a spiral spin thru the air before crashing. I keep my mouth shut for the sake of intergenerational bonding.

Sarge, remember when the last mule-packing unit of the U.S. Army was eliminated shortly after Korea some of the Generals said the U.S. wouldn’t win another war without the mule.
So far, they’re right.

The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy isn’t a clean example of movie matching or not matching the book.
H2G2 started out as a BBC radio drama. Then they made the BBC TV show. Then Doug Adams wrote the novelization. Then finally the movie that didn’t match any of the prior story lines very closely…

54 Sarge,
I have to agree with you on Lonesome Dove. It is hard for me to think of the book characters of W.F. Call and Gus McRae without associating them with the faces of Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall.
I don’t think the same of Streets of Laredo. The film maker missed the end of the novel and the mini-chapters, which focused on the redemption of Call as a human being.
Lonesome Dove has been around since 1972, when it was going to be made into a John Wayne Western with Jimmy Steward and Henry Fonda. I love the Duke, but there is no way he could have brought home the bacon in 140 minutes in terms of fairly representing the book. However, I suspect that it would have been a top seller.

Agreed. Hondo is another example of the type that started out as a short story that was made into a movie that was then written in book length and then made into a TV series.
Been thinking about books faithfully made into movies that have more than 20-30 minutes of impact.
To Kill A Mockingbird came to mind.
God is My Co-Pilot and Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo both did as well. And they brought to mind another film that, although not based on a book, had lasting impact on the populace and that was With The Marines At Tarawa which was controversial at the time because it was brutally honest about the war being fought.
Film can have much more impact on the psyche of the public at large because it is so much more accessible and easier to understand. If film didn’t have at least the possibility of impact, Micheal Moore would weigh in at 150 pounds and selling auto insurance in Walla Walla, and Spike Lee would have nose bleed seats for Lakers games.

We enjoyed a really nice bottle of wine last night; Duclis Rosso, this was a mildly sparkling red wine that was on the sweet side. It was not so dry that it tasted like cleaning fluid, like most of the hoyty toyty wines nor so sweet that it tasted like cough syrup. This one was light on the tongue and still let you know that it was made from grapes instead of industrial products. Made in Italy. Very pleasant and easy to drink and enjoy.

There are those who would disagree, but I believe that the film adaptations of The Lord of The Rings trilogy, while taking necessary liberties to adapt the books to the screen, were nevertheless faithful and successful, and did full justice to JRR Tolkien’s vision.
I’m not a big book reader so I’ve never read The Lord of the Rings. The movies, however have been declared my all-time favority trilogy. They’re superbly made. All of them. My wife has read the books and her cousin, who is a die-hard fan of the books, has read then several times. Both enjoy the film adaptation very much and that is consistant with many fans of the books I have encountered.

I read the LTR trilogy and saw the movies. The big screen simply ain’t no match for my vivid imagination. I still enjoy movies based on books but the books are usually better for the above reason.

In the hour between services the choir hangs out in the kitchen and nibbles on whatever folks bring. (We’ve been there for two hours at that point, are hungry, and still have a couple hours to go.
Today, the guys took a break and the ladies choir is doing the services. I sneaked into the kitchen during the first service and set up a table with a couple of cheese cakes, fresh sliced/sugared strawberries, and chocolate and strawberry syrups.
…And a dozen roses, signed “from anonymous.”

further to my #77 above, if one has to “develop a taste” for sumptin it is probably better left unconsumed. Scotch never tasted good to me while bourbon always did. I also really like a well made rum, like Mount Gay, or some of the other darker rums; baccardi really does not fall in that category.

Having read The Hobbit & the LOTR trilogy several times, I wasn’t expecting much from the movies. It would be a tall order to match the books, so I’m not going too hard on the director. There were parts I thought were well done, but overall they were boring. Chances are I’ll read the books again in a few years. Chances are slim that I’d sit through the movies again.
I agree with WB about 2001 A Space Odyssey. It was well done.
There’s only one case where I enjoyed a movie more that the book on which it was based: Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughter House Five.

You bet. Usually peat = smoke in these tasting notes.
Don’t forget that medicinal, iodine-like taste, with hints of phenol and kerosene.
Read the tasting notes on the first one. It tastes like a light bourbon that has a port/sherry aroma, like a cognac. Very little smoke.

From Drudge’s link to TSA SINGLES OUT PEOPLE WHO COMPLAIN
http://www.cnn.com/2011/TRAVEL/04/15/tsa.screeners.complain/
The 9/11 commission’s report says that “none of the checkpoint supervisors (on September 11th) recalled the (successful) hijackers or reported anything suspicious regarding their screening.”
Some years back I saw an interview with a ticket agent who let Mohammed Atta in, even though he got chills just looking at Atta, because the TSA would raise he11 over any Arab profiling. And that was before 9-11.

It would be a tall order to match the books
I don’t think that would be possible. Especially due to the length of the books and the story line. Frodo, for example, spent many years in the Shire before leaving for his journey, correct? Talk about making a boring movie by adhiring to the books. One advantage I think of books is that it allows the reader to get a very deep description of the characters. Stories told in books are “allowed” to drag on whereas movies are a media that has to move the story along much quicker. This makes adaptation frm book to movie difficult. While I’ve no doubt the books are more entertaining and intriguing, the films’ adaptations of the LOTRs trilogy are very well done. The only significant “quarrell” I’ve heard of would be around the manner in which Saruman died.

Mount Gay produces several fine varieties of rum. I did not know they have been around for so long, though. Other favorites; Lemon Hart Demerara 151 (Guyana), Barbancourt (Hatit), Coruba (Jamica). Not sure if the Lemon Hart is again available in Texas yet. Something about change of owner ship and U.S. import laws.

Man, Y’all have been busy, I’ve been real busy all weekend and so far I’ve not accomplished anything! Not that there’s anything wrong with that. 😉
LQQking back, @ Bobs breakfast, Daughter and Hubby spent the night with us on Friday night because they went to a “Clear Creek Flair” dance for a step sister. Saturday my Bride got up and went to work for a few hours and the rest of us slept late. I rolled outta’ bed around 7:45 and got some deer sausage out of the freezer and cooked it up with grits, eggs and toast. Man if I’d seen Bobs post I’d have sent them over to his house, I bet his griddle biscuits are great! Is a griddle biscuit like a hoe cake? I do love hoe cakes but I only make them when I have “Mater Gravy” and for the Yanks out there, if you’ve never had good old fasioned “Mater Gravy” you don’t know what you’re missing.
I went to the Pasadena Gun Show yesterday and it was one of the better ones, with at least 3 big dealers. The First big dealer had 4, Ruger 44 Specials!? Then later on I found a dealer with 3 of them. I guess it’s the Cowboy Action shooting that brought them back?
It’s a great old caliber that has been obsolete for years. I was LQQKING for a 1911 that didn’t have all the bells and whistles in honor of it’s 100 th birthday. I want a Para-Ordnance GI 45. -

Survived another HOA Easter Egg Hunt. I hope I got a few good pix for the newsletter. Truth is, I may have screwed up the first half of the pix I shot. Squawkbox & ST were FB’ing last night about smoke from North Texas wildfires, causing me to go out and look up. There was some odd stringy-looking stuff blowing across the near-full moon so I got the camera set up for night shots and took several.
Then today I took a bunch of Egg Hunt pix before I realized I was still in night shot mode. After resetting the camera, I resorted to taking some posed shots of kids picking up bright colored plastic eggs to be sure I had the different age groups covered. Heckfahr, don’t all the professional photojournalists do it that way? 🙂

For those who are interested, Atlas Shrugged opened this weekend with a box office of $1.7 million. This was for a limited release of only 300 screens. It was the top grossing limited release (released only in selected areas) of the weekend.
Depending on who you listen to the results range from “disappointing” to “encouraging” probably depending on the political viewpoint of of the commenter. It’s certainly no secret that Hollywood would prefer that this movie just quietly dry up and blow away.
The producers appear to be positive about the results. They are getting positive feedback from exhibitors and are planning to expand their release in the next week.

#91 I have cooked far more elaborate stuff, but the “griddle biscuits” are a classic lazy bachelor/single dad dish of my invention. No mixing, no bowls, no measuring, and no oven are necessary.
Ya crack open a can of Pillsbury Croissant rolls, but instead of rolling them up, lay ‘um flat on the griddle. A minute or so later, flip ‘um over to brown the other side, and bang, you’re done. The critters that hang out here luvs um.
When I returned from my covert cheesecake mission this morning, they were griddling up some French Toast. It was pretty good.
When the kids are cooking, I only offer advice when asked. The other day I silently observed them add way too much pasta to a pot of boiling water, and I hung around just so I could see them reach the conclusion that there was too much pasta for the pot.
It’s fun to watch them learn.

LQQking @ my #91, I plum forgot about the fun with the chain saw, and YES I still have all 21 appendages’ 😀 My Bride has been wanting me to trim up the Black Cherry in the back yard and remove the barren plum tree, not to mention the Pyracantha from He!! on the front of the house, so late yesterday I got out my trusty 40 CC, 20″ Poulan chain saw and started to some serious tree/shrub trimming. My Bride showed up and insisted on trying out the chain saw, I gave her my gloves and safety glasses and she whacked away at the plum tree, did pretty good I’d say. Although She thought that the chain saw was real heavy, Butt, she is 5’ 8” and weighs all of 98 Lbs soaking wet. It was a great end of the day for me. 😉

Open Office is great if you don’t have to maintain interoperability with colleagues in your place of work who will generally be using MS Office. Also, OO is good, but MS Office has a lot more functionality if you need to avail yourself of it.

The U.S. government under Barack Obama is deeply committed to battling any belittlement, criticism, or questioning of Islam. (“I consider it part of my responsibility as President of the United States,” he said, “to fight against negative stereotypes of Islam wherever they appear.”)
At the same time, however, it is OK, in the Obama regime [SEE BELOW FOR AN UPDATE], for the U.S. government to burn Bibles. Yes, that’s right. Bibles were sent to U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan. But the U.S. government determined that the presence of Bibles in this “devoutly Muslim country” might inflame the natives. So they burned them. Why did they burn them? Because it is military policy to burn its trash.
What’s another reason for the US government to burn Bibles?
A new video at the website AnsweringMuslims.com expatiates on this contradiction:
1. “You don’t burn the Koran, because if you do, Muslims might go on a killing spree.”
2 “You do burn the Bible, because if you don’t, Muslims might go on a killing spree.”
Can I now formally spit on the President of the United States? Both current and former?
UPDATE: I hate to spoil the fun of the many commentators who have gleefully pointed out that the actual confiscation of the Bibles (and hence, presumably, the burning) took place in 2008, on the watch of Geroge W. Bush, not Barack Obama. The story broke in May 2009, and I failed to register the fact that it referred to an earlier event. I apologize for that error; butI also note that it changes the point of the column not one whit. Although I greatly admired George W. Bush personally, I always thought — and several times wrote — that his Islamophila (“Islam means peace,” remember that?) was disastrously misplaced. Obama has merely upped the ante, preposterously making a fight against criticizing or “stereotyping” Islam a prominent part of his regime. When it comes to his coddling treatment of Islam, Obama is like Bush, only worse, much worse, as I’ve often had occasion to remark in this space and elsewhere. The point remains, in the words of that witty and frightening video I link to:
Why It’s OK for the U.S. Govt. to Burn Bibles But Condemn Burning the Koran

No Cheating! See if you can guess the name of this song with out clicking the linkie.
It was released as a single by the Doobie Brothers in 1974, as the B-Side of Another Park Another Lonely Sunday. The A-side didn’t get as much air play as it might have because some program directors had a problem with the phrase, “…radio brings me down.” The B-side became their first chart topper.
