April 12th. Lots of big stuff has happened on April 12th.
April 12, 1861 – Confederate forces opened fire on Fort Sumter, starting the US Civil War. After many hours of heavy bombardment and with minimal casualties, France Union forces surrendered.
April 12, 1961 – Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space, orbiting the Earth one time. This marked the beginning of the space race between the US and USSR.
Hello Comrades!
April 12, 2011 – France inaugurates the ban on covering one’s face in public. This will likely result in substantial seething among the immigrant population in France.

I won’t go into detail about the stupidity of the splined shaft fitting used in this design, but I certainly wouldn’t be buying any GM cars if this is an example of their expertise these days.

Is the President now on the “cut spending” bandwagon – after just submitting the largest budget request that all previous ones combined? I really pleased that he was able to take the lead and get the Republicans to agree to some peanut cuts in this year’s non-budget budget. I guess it will be up to the Chinese to impose financial discipline on us since we cannot seem to do it ourselves.

Thanks WB – I thought I was going to have to throw open the door without an opening topic again.
Another late night, after an exhausting day yesterday….my butt is dragging again and Hubby is already putting me through my paces.
I’m not a coffee drinker, but I may have to start. Heck, I may just start out mainlining the stuff.

That was dang scary about the steering wheel. It reminded me of the time years ago Hubby “fixed” a wheel on my car. I drove freeway speeds across town to my workout club in the Galleria area where I was working at the time. I was cutting through River Oaks when I heard this grinding sound from the back of my car, but it went away after I picked up a little speed. Stop sign, gas, grinding, sound stops. Stop sign, gas, grinding, sound stops. I got out and looked under and around the car, checked my treads, nothing unusual. I drive slowly down the street trying to get out of the neighborhood to a gas station for help. A guy stops me and says my rear wheel is wobbling. Oh crap. Drive more s-l-o-w-l-y, get to the intersection. I can feel a change in my car’s movement now. I crawl through the intersection and just as I turn into the driveway, about halfway into the driveway itself, the car settles, so I stop it. I get out and sure enough, the wheel looks a little retarded. The station manager wants to haul it into his bay and replace my tie rod and whatever else he can get his hands on.
I finally reach Hubby and tell him the problem. He tells me not to let anyone touch my car, he’s on the way over. For half an hour I had to fend off the gas station manager, who didn’t like my little VW Bug blocking 1/4 of his driveway, and kept telling me he could fix my car. Hubby finally arrived, and removed the hub cap. He then took the lug nuts out of the cap, jacked the car up, re-placed the wheel, and attached the nuts.
I had been driving at 60 mph without lug nuts holding my wheel on my car.

G’Morning all
Not quite back on regular schedule from last week, but sneaking up on it.50 short years since the first manned space flight. I was in the Marines when this took place. We were scared to death of the possibilities of orbiting missles.
On April 12, 1961, a Russian cosmonaut named Yuri Gagarin made space history when he became the first human being to blast off into space, aboard a bell-shaped capsule known as Voystok 1.
In 108 minutes, he circled the Earth, passing over the Pacific Ocean, the Straits of Magellan, the Atlantic and Africa before Voystok 1 reentered the Earth’s atmosphere and landed near Engels, Russia.

Fortunately, no one was injured. Unfortunately, daughter’s Firebird is probably totaled. On the way back from picking her up I caught bits and pieces of what happened, but she was still too upset and shaken to give a full account.
After she chilled out awhile, we used the speaker phone to call the insurance company, and I got the full story. A 98 Civic blasted through a red light. She hit the brakes, but still nailed it so hard that it rolled after hitting the curb, taking out a street lamp on the way. (Heh, A poll dancing Civic…) At that point I said, “The only thing this accident lacks is a fire hydrant.”
Never a dull moment.

VW Beetles can do 60mph?
True story. After I got out of the Marines in 1964 and went back to Corpus, I worked for a local Architect. We had a VW for a company car. It would not go up the ship channel bridge with the air conditioner on.

White House ceremony to mark new GI initiative
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will help launch a national initiative Tuesday to support and honor service members and their families.
The initiative is headed by first lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden’s wife, Jill, both of whom will be at the event along with the vice president. It’s planned for the White House East Room. Later, the president meets with John Berry, the director of the Office of Personnel Management. Obama and Vice President Biden sit down still later with Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in separate meetings.I’ve got a great idea on how to honor them. Pay them in accordance with their contract! To not pay them last week has got to be the greatest dissing of them possible, as well as breach of contract. These young people signed a contract with the government to lay their life on the line in return for a specified amount of pay. The contract does not say “maybe” pay them. I think those who didn’t get paid last week should pool together and get a Rusty Hardin type lawyer to file a class action lawsuit for breach of contract.
Leave it to America’s first black president to bring back slavery on the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the Civil War.

I had one when I was in high school. A couple of friends and I went down to San Francisco for some reason (make fun of the freaks, catch a Giants game, who knows). I caught a stoplight on one of the hills. Light turns green, I floor it and release the clutch (and the parking brake), and nothing happens. I had to let it roll back so the back of the car was pointing straight into the curb and the front was in traffic (parallel to the cross-street). I then floored it and blasted out while turning right so I was pointed up the hill again and made it on the yellow light. It could handle a couple of us, but three or four was too much for it.

It would not go up the ship channel bridge with the air conditioner on.

Wonder if the same is true for the modern “personel cars?”

Michigan town bans Tea Party signs and banners at a rally because they are “too political” and “too controversial”.
Exactly what part of:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
do they not understand?

Seems like Pigford is ALL smoke and mirrors:
Dr. John Boyds credentials checked. Turns out the whole thing is a package of lies. From lobbying the President of the United States to accusing a congressman of racism on national television to driving a tractor up to the steps of the capitol in Washington DC, DOCTOR John Boyd has been the public face of the Pigford Settlement movement over the past several years. Everywhere you turn in the Pigford story, DOCTOR John Boyd is there. Big Government’s Lee Stranahan was curious about the DOCTOR’s credentials and about the institute that bears his name.
Stranahan did some investigating and the results are bizarre, amusing and infuriating. You won’t believe what you see when you learn the truth about DOCTOR John Boyd and The John Boyd Institute.

I would imagine their power to weight ratio is a little better. In college I had a Toyota Corolla with a mighty 1.2 liter engine. On I-40 in Arizona (?), there are several long up grades. I would get it going as fast as I could (~60) and it would hold that speed fairly well, until I would get caught behind a truck passing another truck. I would then have to drive about 40mph to the top of the hill. ๐
Those were great trips. Arizona & Southern California in late May with vinyl seats and no A/C.

You should drive one across the Golden Gate bridge. Really narrow lanes. Huge cross wind. Those things are like driving a sail.

I too once drove a VW beetle in Corpus Christi. There were a few steep climbs along the bay frontage road where we lived, up into the downtown area. The bug did not have synchro-mesh in 1st gear, so if you were stopped on a hill and then needed to get into gear headed up while “rolling backwards into the bay” as my husband called it — it was scary for a West Texas flatlander like me.

They didnโt teach you how to double clutch?
Oooh, that comment brings back memories. First the players:
Me: A high school teenager, learned to drive on automatics, then dating Hubby
Hubby: a very competent mechanic and driver, liked to autocross (bracket racing), a VW fan and drove nothing else
Hubby’s Brother (aka PITAbro): wanted to be an artchitect, very smart but failed to apply himself, generally annoying, putting me in the same room with him isn’t pretty
Hubby’s Parents: had not met me yet, lived south of Angleton
VW Squareback: Hubby’s car, bigger than a VW bug, kinda like a stunted station wagon, NOT an automatic!Hubby was going to teach me how to drive a stick, and we were taking his Squareback to see his folks. To get to their house, we’d have to drive down highway 35 from Pearland. PITAbro was in the back seat as Hubby had me drive around the residential areas, making me shift up, down, up, down, up, down. Along the way he kept saying things like “Watch out for those kids! Stop at the stop sign. Turn on your blinker.” I already knew it was bad form to run over a kid on a bike. I knew what a stop sign was for. I knew to let others know I was turning. At first it was mildly annoying, then majorly annoying, then I wanted to rip his face off. PITAbro would occasionally throw in a comment, but he just sat in the back seat and watched for the most part. I held my tongue except for the occasional “I know, I KNOW!”. Finally, Hubby decided I was ready for the big road. We were to stop for gas and then make a right turn to get to 35, make a left, and then I would drive straight for about an hour. I was looking forward to that long, straight drive, without reminders about blinkers and stop signs!
I was so frustrated that I overshot the gas station. Hubby said, “Tedtam, you were supposed to turn in there.” It was a logical, calmly stated comment, but it was the proverbial last straw. I pulled into the Kroger parking lot and proceeded to unload a stream of invectives upon my future husband that included a few words that I’m not even sure sailors are familiar with. PITAbro just sat in the back, mouth wisely held shut, because if he had said even — one — word —-
Hubby let me vent. I finally ran out of cuss words, those well-established and a few I made up. As I sat there, the pulse pounding in my ears and me panting for breath, he apologized for making me so crazy and he would back off on the “instruction”. I slammed the car into gear and went to the gas station. Hubby filled up with gas, PITAbro continued to hold his tongue, and I got us onto the highway without breaking the stick off the transmission. Things were starting to ease up. I went through the gears, got up to 40 mph, 50 mph, 55 mph, 60 mph…and I was off to meet my boyfriend’s parents.
It was real quiet for about ten minutes. PITAbro was still quiet. Hubby was still quiet. Finally, he said, “Tedtam, you can put it into fourth now.” I forcefully put it into fourth gear and avoided flying engine parts.
His parents loved me. They told Hubby what a nice girl I was. I guess neither Hubby nor PITAbro explained my lapse of civility.

In college I drove a 72 Pinto with a 3.5 cylinder engine (it had a habit of burning up the #1 cylinder valves every 6 months or so.)
I lived in Lake Charles, and worked across the Calcasieu river. The steep I-10 bridge was a bit too much for the Pinto, even with good valves, so I took the longer route over the I-210 bridge. I had to get a running start before the bridge, attaining it’s top speed of 72 mph, and still had to downshift to make it over the top.
Those were the days.

They were the typical under dash units of the day.I’ve never seen a beetle with AC, how did you cool the condensor coil? The VW was air cooled and didn’t have a raditor. It had a fan that ducted air down over the engine but nowhere to put the coil. I’m guessing it had an electric fan. Also a 64 vintage VW would have had a generator not an alternator so it would have a hard time keeping up.

The VW was air cooled and didnโt have a raditor. It had a fan that ducted air down over the engine
In Northern California, it rains from about October through April, what seems like all the time.
The heater for the Beetle uses the exhaust airflow from the engine cooling air. I was going down Hwy 101 in Santa Rosa and exited the freeway into a big puddle/small lake. The water hit the hot cylinders and presto! steam was coming out the heater vents. Outside air temp was around 40, so the windows instantly fogged over. I had to roll the windows down to get the steam out of the car before the windows would even start to clear (I tried wiping them down, but they fogged back over real quick).

http://www.radicalislam.orgYet, as Western leaders rush to profess their abhorrence at what one American did to one inanimate book, letโs take a quick look at what many Muslims are doing to many living and breathing Christians around the Islamic worldโto virtually no media coverage or Western condemnation:
Afghanistan: A Muslim convert to Christianity was seized and, according to shariaโs apostasy laws, awaits execution.
Bangladesh: A Christian man was arrested for distributing Bibles near Muslims. Since Wednesday, thousands of Muslims have been rioting, injuring dozensโnot because of Jones, but in protestation of womenโs rights.
Egypt: A Muslim mob burned down another Coptic church and dozens of Christian homes; when Christians protested, the military opened fire on them while crying โAllahu Akbar,โ killing nine. Another mob cut a Christian manโs ear off โaccording to sharia.โ
Ethiopia: Muslims went on a rampage burning down nearly 70 churches, killing at least one Christian, and dislocating as many as 10,000. Christians living in Muslim majority regions are being warned to either convert to Islam, abandon their homes, or die.
Malaysia: Authorities detained and desecrated thousands of Bibles.
Pakistan: Two Christians were shot to death as they exited church; a Christian serving life in prison for โblasphemyโ died in his cell under suspicions of murder.
Saudi Arabia: An Eritrean Christian has been arrested for sharing his faith with Muslims and is facing the death penalty; other missionaries continue to languish in Saudi prisons.
Somalia and Sudan: Christian girlsโincluding a mother of fourโwere recently abducted, raped, and killed for embracing Christianity. It should be borne in mind that none of these atrocities were performed in retaliation to Jonesโ Koran burning; theyโre just business as usual in the Muslim world. Moreover, the above list is but a quick and cursory sampling

I still have my first car. Cranked her up this weekend after about 18 months. Just had to spray a little ether in the carb and she fired right up. Took her for a spin around the block and quickly realized a 400 with a cam and an automatic is a little too much for drum brakes that need bleeding. Trying to hold that beast at a red light was a little challenging. But it convinced me now is the time to upgrade the brakes.

#37 Hambone, if memory serves it’s a 69 Firebird, and it would have had drum brakes? Discs were optional in those years and very co$tly! The car came off the assembly line with drums and then was converted to discs. The Z-28 option was $800! This, on a car that cost $3000.

I’m a principled reformer, and my goal is to see the country turn around,” Bachmann said. “I’m also committed to being a one-term president if that’s what it takes in order to turn things around, because this is not about personal ambition.
Sarah Palin was quick to one up Bachmann, stating, “If I decide to run, and am elected, I commit to being a half-term president, if that’s what it takes.”
Seriously folks, I’m in no way impressed with Obama, but also not impressed with the current slate of republican hopefuls. -

Note a couple of interesting details in the picture. The cars are all parked crossways to the street to prevent runaways (also for the reasons I alluded to earlier). They had to cut stairsteps into the sidewalks.
This is one of the streets that led Bill Cosby to coin the phrase “drifting back into the bay”.

I don’t blame Palin for stepping down before she finished her term. Given all the lawsuits the libs were filing against her, the mounting legal bills threatening to drive her into bankruptcy (Alaskan law prohibited the state from paying her legal bills), and the amount of time those suits were taking away from her doing her job – I think it was the right thing to do. Her replacement could do a better job of governing Alaska than she could with the kind of burden the left was piling on her. She actually put her duty towards her state before her personal desire to stay in office.
The fact that she’s done so well after leaving office is gravy.
But then, those people who just don’t like her or think they know better won’t be swayed by that argument, and will continue to make mean-spirited and ignorant jibes at her.

#44 Tedtam, I don’t blame her either. She made the best decision for her family, and her financial future. But that doesn’t mean I won’t crack a joke about it. ๐
My theory remains that the McCain camp picked her because he wasn’t doing too well with the SoCons, and they needed something to salvage the down ballot turnout from that portion of the base. Polling done before and after her selection supports that theory.
She was a tool of the political industry. It’s not that unusual.

#47 Until you have read the trial transcripts, and see for yourself what a wiss poor case the defendants brought, and how radically different it was from the $40 million dollars of fear mongering free speech prior to the election, you have absolutely no factual basis, at all, on which to accuse the judge of bias. But that’s not unusual with this political football topic either, is it? It’s simply another iteration of the politics of fear–A popular and successful tactic.
But if you want to joke about it, that’s fine with me. ๐

Administrator Charles Bolden announced that Shuttle Enterprise, the first orbiter built, will move from the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York. The Udvar-Hazy Center will become the new home for shuttle Discovery, which retired after completing its 39th mission in March. Shuttle Endeavour, which is preparing for its final flight at the end of the month, will go to the California Science Center in Los Angeles. Atlantis, which will fly the last planned shuttle mission in June, will be displayed at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor’s Complex in Florida.

From a link on your link (translink?)CLPP 2011: Transfeminisms
explores trans and gender justice activism, reproductive rights, feminism, and the connections between our movements. How does transmysogyny affect all of our communities? How can we build strong connections among trans communities? Panelists will discuss their experiences with community building, movement building, representation, connecting with allies, and infusing gender justice into our understanding of feminisms.
CLPP is “Civil Liberties and Public Policy” But wait, there’s more!
โThere are a lot of ways that violence intersects on bodies, and the bodies of transwomen in particular, and the media continues to represent trans women in the same way. Itโs not that those things arenโt true and arenโt happening, but there are a lot of amazing things that transwomen are doing in our various movements. How can you actually envision a life thatโs different than that, if you only see yourself being portrayed as a victim, as meeting some horrible death or being oppressed day in an day out?โ
Why is this crap even thought about, let alone studied?
Some people have way too much time on their hands. At least when the economy totally collapses (in part due to non-productive crap like this), most of this will wither on the vine.

Posted April 11, 2011 at 4:58 pm | PermalinkIโm not sure if I agree entirely. I too am working to become more trans-inclusive in my politics, but I donโt know if ceasing to conceptualize of abortion as a womenโs issue is entirely productive. It is not just women who get abortions, but predominantly that is the case. And I know that healthcare access is a huge issue in the trans-community, but anti-abortion healthcare politics predominantly affect women. I would argue that anti-abortion politics are a direct attack on women and their bodies. Yes, transpersons are affected by this as well, but they are not necessarily the target. Itโs like men and eating disordersโ yes it happens to men too, but there is no denying that eating disorders is a gendered issue that disproportionately affects women. I am afraid that if we stop thinking about abortion as a womenโs issue, we might lose touch with how anti-abortion politics work to systemically oppress women because they are women. I definitely think itโs helpful to examine how people who are not sis-gendered women are affected by this, but I donโt know if an entire paradigm shift in how this issue is gendered is necessarily the most effective strategy.
I am still unsure about this, and am definitely open for discussion and disagreement.
Here’s the rebuttal (in part):
Alex Myn, you are not a trans ally, stop kidding yourself. People like YOU actively reinforce cissexual privilege.
When you refer to abortion issues as womenโs issues, you are stating to all the trans people reading your comment that trans men (who need access to abortions) are women, and trans women (who do not need access to abortions) are therefore, not women. So your speech is broken.
I wonder if the first commenter is really “Alex Mann”? I also wonder why they don’t spell “woman” as “womyn” like the really true-blue wimmins do?
They then go on to yapping about how pro-life people are that way because they are anti-wimmins.

It’s all fine and good to make fun of the fringes, and sometimes funny. Heck, I think Pat Robertson is fricking hilarious! But I don’t paint everyone with his nonsensical drivel.
But the fact of the matter is that a significant portion of voters want their government to disadvantage people based on what they do with with their private parts, on their own property, and a smaller number go out of their way and stoop so far as to be dishonest in the interest of convincing others to fear a non-threat.
That’s pretty messed up, if you ask me.

Why is this crap even thought about, let alone studied?
Because as a society we no longer ostracize behavior that was once considered destructive and abhorrent by all societies. We indulge these mentally deficient twits. Wanna know why the cost of higher education has skyrocketed? Look no further than the “studies” programs that educated this idiot. Wanna fund Head Start programs? Fine. Cancel all liberal arts degree programs that end in “Studies” at all public universities. I read stuff like this and I almost long for an economic collapse just to give the gene pool a good Cloroxing. And you know there’s no need to worry about these walking testimonials to the virtues of retroactive vasectomies going all “Lord of the Flies” on us. They’ll be cowering in the corners of their ivory towers still waiting for their mommies and daddies to pick them up from “interpretive dance” classes (or hormone injections).

Exactly where do you draw the line?
Where the law gets passed.
As opposed to the long-standing norms of society.
For example, the French have a long-standing social norm of being able to see each other’s faces when out and about in public. This served them well until a bunch of medieval idiots showed up and decided that their wimmins should go around wearing Coleman Campmaster 3000 tents when in public. Faced with this, they passed legislation that will likely set the medieval crowd into a long seethe banning people from hiding their faces in public.
Told you it was obvious.

So if a religious nutjob “society” like fundamentalist Islam “passes a law” that says all womenz must wear tents, it’s OK with you because “society” has spoken, and passed some silly law?
…Didn’t think so.
But in both cases the principle is the same, and you have still not answered the question. Is there a delineation between society and government power? I think there should be. How bout you?

Let’s see now – The One sent the humvee manufacturing to another state, shut down gulf exploration activities, had EPA take over air quality monitoring from the State (and subsequently denied opening a couple or refineries which had previously been approved and built in Corpus Christi), closed out the Johnson NASA facility, and I’m sure had done a few other things to try to penalize Texans for their unwillingness to see the light and vote for him. And you are surprised that he awarded shuttles elsewhere – there was never any doubt that Houston would be excluded.
As to the pending dollar and economic collapse, someone pointed out the other day that if you are the Son of God and are omnipotent, why would you worry about the future. Good point for him I guess, but not necessarily for me.

#85 The whole line of “reasoning” is a red herring anyway. Religious nutjobs as described above aren’t elected and don’t pass legislation using power mandated from the people. They install themselves as dictators and issue edicts. You don’t get to vote on edicts.

Seems that should be up to the society and its freely-elected government. As transhamous points out, Islamic nutjob governments don’t count because they don’t govern with the free consent of the governed. As a result of the lunacy foisted on society in general over the past few decades, what was once a clear societal norm has become the subject of governmental power. A prime example of this is same sex “marriage”. From the dawn of time until a few years ago, same-sex “marriage” was not even an idea for a topic of conversation, let alone something for which people would be agitating.

Political shenanigans on government projects are nothing new. That’s how Houston got the Space Center to begin with. There was no logical reason to put it here other than LBJ was instrumental in pushing the project and then became VP. It’s no surprise that politics entered into the decision on who gets a shuttle.
Btw, BAE Systems in Sealy is still running. They were awarded a couple of contracts not too long ago.

Isn’t it amusing at how much the D-terd-nozzles (redundant, I know) love to gripe about the exclusionist ‘good ole boys network’ and still they routinely demonstrate that they, the D-terd-nozzles, are the group far more likely to engage in that which they decry? Just another example of glaring hypocrisy from the D-terds.

Hammer, the Tremec 5 speed OD is really the ultimate in street performance if you enjoy grinding the gears. Personally, I have a Muncie wide ratio 4 speed in my Camaro, with a 3.70 Ford 9″ with a Detroit Locker. 0-60 is just all kinds of fun – but cruisin’ at 70mph winds the 383 to 3,000 rpm. That’s where the Tremec OD would come in handy – but reality is I don’t really drive it enough to justify the $3,000 plus investment. One Saturday nite before it gets too hot, you need to take your Firebird over to the Niftee 50ees show:
Let me know in advance and I’ll fire up the Camaro and join you.

Is there a delineation between society and government power?
There is no line.
In our form of government, government derives it power from the governed.
(but you should know that. Oh wait you might have gone to public school and not learned that fact.)
And now TOO DO TO DOOOOOO a definition.society |sษหsฤซษtฤ|
noun ( pl. -ties)
the aggregate of people living together in a more or less ordered community. So ummm no there is no separating line. What you propose is pure anarchy when you suggest there should be some separating line. The preamble to the Constitution says WE DER FOLKS established the Constitution for which our governing body should follow. Again no dividing line. I like things like they are. Keeps people like you from turning my country into a cesspool quicker than what Obama is.

Concerns for Sex Workers Amid Serial Killer Investigation
Sex workers are being advised to use the buddy system so that someone knows where they are.I thought they were called prostitutes, or hookers?!?
This is another example of the left hi-jacking the language to soften the crime. Calling them “sex workers” gives them an air of legitimacy that is not warranted. How many of us here on Hammy’s couch want our doughters or sons to grow up to be “sex workers”? Is there nothing sacred with the left other than abortion? -

#92 Squawk,
So ummm no there is no separating line.
So as long as it’s OK with “society” government has unlimited power anytime “society” decides it should have it?
Nothing in the the definition you provided indicates that society is a monolithic entity. I don’t understand how you can arrive at such a conclusion without assuming that it is. Government, on the other hand is intended to be a monolithic entity.
There is a difference. Or at the least, there should be.

This is why we have elections. My problem is the same as yours. You get your knickers in a twist cause voters turn down cannabis and teh ghey initiatives. I get my knickers in a knot with idgits that vote for the same ole same ole and wonder why we got Obammy today.

Overall, elections are a good thing, but they don’t substantiate the existence of any kind of monolithic “society” at all. Nor do they justify an omnipotent government at the will of a simple majority.
An “aggregate of people living together in a more or less ordered community” will never agree on everything. That’s pretty much human nature. Hence the need, and the benefit, of limiting government power with checks and balances.

OK, This would be my unbiased opinion about the Shuttles, yes I said unbiased, based on facts. In the order of priority;
#1 The Smithsonian, our countryโs Museum, a no brainer.
#2 Johnson Space Center, THE โManned Space Centerโ, home to โMission Controlโ, all the support engineers and technicians, not to mention all the astronauts and their families.
#3 Kennedy Space Center where the shuttle was readied, launched and usually landed.
#4 Dryden Flight Research Center @ Edwards AFB, where it was initially tested and landed many times before they built the strip in Florida. It was a back up landing site after that.
#5 Marshall in Huntsville, one of the oldest faculties along with Edwards where a lot of the structural testing was done.
After that it starts getting muddled, BUTT, New York & California?!?!
Beam me up Scotty!
BTW; How do you think that the families of the Challenger and Columbia disasters feel tonight?

First car, 1964 GTO with a Catalina 2+2 421 tri-power bored out to 428. Power was not a problem. Stopping on a single master manual four wheel drum brake system was. I went through a lot of stop signs, any paved surface was a 1/4 mile back then. Muncie four speed rock crusher, sounded just like this on the two lane asphalt intersection at 518 and 528 where Friendswood ended.
I had a friend who was into VW bugs. He would follow the four wheelers into the rice fields. The darn thing was too light to sink and get stuck. He just sort of skated around them. They were not amused. This was opposite the Sun Meadows subdivision, which was a bit remote back then.

Pica is a disorder found most commonly in toddlers and pregnant women who lack certain nutrients, causing them to crave non-nutritive substances like chalk, coins, batteries and even dirt.
Sometimes itโs caused by stress, and Adele admits her first time happened during a very emotional period in her life, when her parents were on the brink of divorce.

Oh, my! I run errands for some hours and come back to find I cannot keep track of all the news! Trannies of all types, Bobo back on his confusing “I support this today because nobody else likes it” kinda thing, it seems that Hammy and Squawk are playing tag or something, Houston gets b-slapped by the administration (probably because our state voted the wrong way), and Squawk’s long-lost daughter is coming home! Wow! Ya’ll have been busy, busy, busy!

That story about the VW “floating” in the mud reminded me of yet another Bug story:
Back years ago when I worked for The Major Local Airline, I was only about a mile from the headquarters where I was officed. Waugh Drive was my usual route, and it has a few slight bends in it, one of which is near a church. At the time, Hubby and I were short on money, and I was driving a VW on which he had done engine work and the owner had never come to recover it. We got an abandoned title to the car and I used it until after Lovely was born. Anyway, although the engine was in good shape (Hubby’s a good VW mechanic), the floorboard was not. I had to make sure the floor mat was kept over the hole in the floorboard so my foot wouldn’t go through it. It wasn’t hard to do and we couldn’t afford to fix it, so I drove the car that way all the time. It never really caused a problem.
One morning as I left for work.I saw my father-in-law at the apartments. They owned them (mom-in-law still does, Hubby’s father passed years ago) and we were living in one of the bottom units. As children of the owners, we rated a covered parking spot, next to the trash cans bin (it had a cover on it, no fly issues). I said good morning to FIL, got in the car, and took off in the rain to get to work.
I turned onto Yoakum, crossed over Montrose to Waugh, and proceeded on my merry way, the windshield wipers not quite keeping time to the music on the radio, and I came around the aforementioned bend in the road. There was a puddle, which didn’t look like much at the time. It didn’t matter, because even though I let off the gas, I really didn’t have time to slow down much, so I gripped the wheel a little tighter in preparation for the drag the water would put on the tires.
What I wasn’t prepared for was the tidal wave. Yes, I said TIDAL WAVE! The water came up through the floorboard, out from under the floor mat, and I remember seeing a sheet of water come up in front of the dash, hit the roof, and come down on the top of my head. I kid you not, I had a little piece of Hawaii right in the front seat of VW Bug. I was drenched! My hair, which I had brushed and rolled and styled, was now hanging about my ears. There was at least two inches of water in the floorboard, not draining because of the ever trusty floor mat. I turned the car around and went back to the apartments to clean up and change. As I pulled back into the parking space, my father-in-law was still there. I grabbed a broom and began sweeping the water out of my car. My suit was clinging to my and I kept pushing dripping curls out of my face as I leaned into my car, swooshing the water out.
Father-in-law turns to me and said, “Well, that was quick! You don’t have to work today?”
I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. The man was sharp as a tack when it came to figures, but everyday stuff….

Hence the need, and the benefit, of limiting government power with checks and balances.
Had the gays not started pushing for same-sex marriage to be legalized, there would have been no need at all for the countervailing push to prevent that from happening.

Sounds to me like it is YOU who need the prayers โ that she stays with you this time for the long long haul.
She did not leave me last time. We left each other. Heck our biggest down fall was selfishness, neither of us could get over ourselves. Seriously, we have NO secrets, nothing to hide. Do we get mad at each other? Yup but what we learned together is just because we are mad at each other it is not about loving each other.
Getting back with her after a 16 year separation was a miracle too. Yanno there was a time when “at best” I was agnostic. Enough has happened in my life and I have seen miracles in others to be absolutely convinced there is God that cares bout all of us. I am convinced there is no such thing as coincidence either. My Gosh just look at what I have written here. Ya really think I could have orchestrated any of this? I think not.
Anywho I have lived a full life with my lovely wife this time around and figure to continue on for a long long time.

Licken the toe jam from between my toes is a small price to pay for three hots and a cot.
She has free run of the property, treats, fed on a regular schedule. BTW did I mention she took over our LEATHER love seat a week after it was delivered?Sheesh and they call it a dogs life. I should have it that good.
