Apparently there’s an election coming up sometime in the not-too-distant future. I’ve begun to hear some ads on the radio in support of legalized gambling in Texas. I’m somewhat on the fence on this.
First, if you want to essentially take your own hard-earned money, pile it up in the street, and set fire to it (figuratively speaking), then you should have every right to do so. Who am I to tell you what to do? Others claim that there will be this tremendous windfall of tax revenues resulting from legalizing and taxing gambling (sound familiar?).
On the other hand, gambling (legal and otherwise) has been shown to have a detrimental impact on the social fabric of the areas in which it appears. This effect is most pronounced in areas where there is little tourism to draw people in from outside the area. Las Vegas and to a lesser extent Atlantic City are exceptions to this generality, because they have become tourist destinations in their own rights due to gambling.
They are however, not exactly “family friendly” cities. Regardless of the legality and high degree of government regulation involved, there is still a high degree of corruption of the governments there and significant organized crime involvement as casinos offer opportunities to launder money.
What do you people think?
btw – Why is it that political ads tend to be some combination of brain-damaged and seriously annoying? The ads I’ve heard on the radio have been horrible; “Louisiana” and “Oklahoma” saying how thankful they are that Texas sends its money to them in the form of gambling dollars. They don’t thank Texas for the less savory side-effects of gambling…

I can not say I am pro-gambling since I personally would not participate, however, I am not necessarily anti-gambling either. Wagon, to which deleterious effects do you refer?
I can get on a bus virtually anywhere in Houston for a short trip to Lake Charles for next to nothing. If I am an addict, I have relatively easy access to my “need”. There are already a variety of games courtesy of the Texas Lotto Commission. I could even sit in front of my computer for my fix by playing with real money with online gambling.
Can gambling destroy you financially, emotionally, and socially? Yes it can! My point is that we already have a variety of means to scratch that itch. If we put it in our backyard, will that cause more people to gamble for the first time or gamble more frequently? I do not think so. Those with a propensity to gamble will continue while those who do not, will not.

I find it ironic that there’s folks out there spending a lot of money to convince Texans that we should be more like Louisiana and Oklahoma. If gambling did any good for a state’s bottom line, New Jersey would be the envy of the nation. Of course, those folks spending all that money have freinds in high places now.
We don’t have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem. We shouldn’t be trying to solve a problem we don’t have because it will only make us feel like we’ve solved the problem we do have. Telling me that doing anything to increase the amount of money the State separates from the people is a good idea is like telling me I should send Charlie Sheen a case of scotch. He doesn’t need it and it will probably only make things worse.

I’m not convinced that having gambling in Texas would make us more like Louisiana or Oklahoma aside from the gambling commonality itself. Nor am I convinced that it would make us more like Nevada or New Jersey. TexMo makes a good point. If I want to engage myself in gambling (which I mostly don’t) right here in Texas I already have the ability to do that. Having casinos here wouldn’t suddenly make me want to go out and spend all of my money at one.

Get the government out of the way. There are plenty of unsavory characters hanging around in numerous neighborhoods that do not offer gambling, so maybe they could be concentrated in a gambling area. Let the government tax the heck out of them, and let them buy off the politicians in return to do things the way they want them done – just as it is in Kemah right now even though there is no legal gambling at this time. The little game rooms all over Galveston County would be required to pay taxes or close up shop.
I remember when horse racing was going to solve all our problems, then the lotto, etc. Heck, I even remember when the 1/2% sales tax was going to be the tax to end all other taxes. guess my point of view is simply this – who cares. Grandma can spend her SS check at the bingo hall right now, or the dog track, or the horse track, or the liquor store, or the neighborhood crack dealer, so why not go ahead and offer her another alternative.
I really do wish the government would quit trying to decide what is in my best interest.

Its not a matter of making people spend money, or keeping them from gambling.
The problem is if we keep finding new ways to send money to the State, they ain’t never going to have the incentive to stop spending so dam much. We should be looking at ways to reduce the amount of money the State collects, not give them more money so they can think up more stuff for them to bless us with. Make them do fewer things for us, cuz all the stuff they are doing for us doesn’t really do us much good anyway. Less money for the State means less State in our money.

Just ask yourself the question:
“Do I want to give the State the power to do more for me?”
If the answer is yes, then legalize gambling and tax the he!! out of it.
If the answer is no, then legalize gambling and don’t collect any taxes at all on it.
I bet if the State sees that it ain’t gonna collect any taxes, the enthusiasm in the Lege will die down a bit.

OK Sarge, I buy your argument in #6. Let’s make this revenue neutral… we’ll need a corresponding decrease in the gas tax.

For at least the nest 10 years we should be focusing on reducing both taxes and spending. Anytime a politician comes to you with an idea and says that it will result in more money for the State to spend, hit him in the face with a big piece of raw meat and tell him he just doesn’t get it.
After we’ve cut spending and taxes for 10 years, come to us with new ideas of what the State can be doing for me and how to raise the revenue to do it. Make them do both at the same time. “Here’s what we’re going to do, here’s how we’re going to raise the money to do it, and we won’t spend any more than that.”
But after that 10 years, I bet we’re happier with the State we have and won’t wnat to go back to the one that does so dam much for us.

I am a rare gambler, when in the mood I enjoy it. Play a little, lose a little, win a little. What I don’t agree with is all the screaming about how gambling is evil, yet we have horse racing, dog racing, bingos, lotto’s and heaven knows how many other state sanctioned gambling venues. If I wanted I could plaly poker every night of the week, for real money at a real table with real people. It is going on now and it’s not exactly hidden.
I don’t like government telling me what I can and can’t do based on their feelings. Give me some hard, real facts about how it is going to destroy society otherwise legalize it.
I also agree with Sarge, we don’t have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem.
Just my two cents worth.

Its not about the gambling. Its about te revenue. And its about the revenue so they can avoid cutting the spending.
Which means its really about the spending.
Its been well established here that the State isn’t keeping anyone from gambling. The State is just not collecting revenue from the gambling thats going on.

Tobacco has a “detrimental impact on the social fabric.” Make it illegal!
Alcohol has a “detrimental impact on the social fabric.” Make it illegal!
Watching too much (or the “wrong kind” of) TV has “a detrimental impact on the social fabric.” Make it illegal!
An unhealthy diet has “a detrimental impact on the social fabric.” Make it illegal!
Sex outside of marriage has “a detrimental impact on the social fabric.” Make it illegal!
The notion that the state should prohibit people from making unwise choices stems from a point of view that nothing should be “allowed” without the explicit permission of a powerful government. That kind of authoritarian outlook is fine for a voluntary organization such as a church, but it should have no place in the government of a free society.

While I agree in principle with you, gambling is a bit different in that it is often conducted at a specific place (similar to alcohol, but I digress). These gambling businesses (for lack of a better term) have the potential to draw people with bad behavior patterns. I’m not talking about the gambling addict who blows his grocery money; I am talking about those whose conduct is disruptive to the area around the gambling establishment. The local citizens should have the right to disallow these establishments in their neighborhoods, the same as they generally do now with bars and strip clubs.
As to those who blow their grocery money on gambling, what do we as a society want to do with them?

Yesterday was the 1st session for senior portraits for the girls. They had beat me home and was getting the horses and dogs ready to go bye-bye. Apparently, there was a bee’s nest in the trailer. Nooooooo. They couldn’t grab a can of wasp spray. That would be too easy.
They thought it’d be a good idea to take the trailer around the block to remove them. They turned the corner and the trailer went right and the truck when left. (Yes, the safety chains WERE hooked up) They seriously mowed down my neighbors mailbox (which I’m replacing today) and I had to jack up the trailer to be able to hitch it back up. I also couldn’t get the trailer lights to work.
We ended getting some awesome photos, once we came back home to get the grease and grime offa us. No horses were harmed. The girls on the other hand……..

#24 Hayprocessor, according to your flawed and irrational logic, if the people of the State of Texas vote to disallow extramarital sex it means they simply want to strengthen the institution of traditional marriage.
What it really means is that a bunch of nanny state do-gooders think they have the power to use government to control the lives of others to the Nth degree.
btw, Prohibiting lotteries except when they are operated by the government is a blatant statement of duplicitous authoritarianism.

Oh, Save Us from the Celebs Who Save Us
I’ll say.
Madonna is not the only celeb to get tripped up while making a bid to put her mark on the planet.
Oprah Winfrey…flew to Africa to clean the mess from those pricey sheets.
Sean Penn dabbled near treason…before shifting to drive-by trips to Haiti.
George Clooney discovered Sudan as a tool for cleansing guilt at Oscar time. “…you sort of want to do something that makes you feel better,” he told Newsweek…. the actor gave money to a village for a well, huts and a community center.
Those lucky villagers were killed when a neighboring tribe lusted after the neat new community center and that awesome well. Clooney’s response? “Sometimes helping is not throwing money at a problem.”
Jessica Kraft, spokeswoman for Operation Smile. “I’m happy to say we haven’t dealt with anything” that globe-trotting celebs have mucked up.”
Yeah, but we have to listen adoringly – or not – as they tell their adoring public how incredibly awesome and politically astute they are. That is, they don’t really play up the dead villagers or how they’re feeding the corruption overseas. As long as their celebrity egos remain intact, it’s all good.
I’m loving the last three paragraphs:
Madonna now has an image choice to make: Is she a thief?
Or, is she just another idiot star better kept off the world stage?
I’ll go with stupid.
Like we needed her to adopt an international baby and fritter away millions of dollars in a corrupt nation to tell us that. I think the cone bra said it all.

On the radio last night on my way home, Dan Patrick was talking about the Texas budget. Depending on who you listen to and what day it is, they must ct between $15 and $25 billion in spending from the current budget to match projected revenues of ~$72 billion.Let’s extrapolate that out to the Federal government. On the low side, we have (numbers are billions) $3,500 (2010 Fed budget) * [$15 / $87] = $240 (equivalent cut at Fed level).
Those idiots in DC are going on like $7 billion will end Life As We Know It. The reality is that the $100 billion the Reps want is 40% (give or take) of what the Texas Leg is actually doing, because it must. If the Federal budget had to be balanced, cuts of about $1,500 billion would have to be made, which is six times the current Texas shortfall.
Time for term limits is here. We need people focused on governing and not on reelection.

As for gambling, it is well documented that Sarge’s point is correct about the money. Is is also correct that when gambling is made legal the towns that have it turn into a sewer. Las Vegas may be all pretty and stuff, but walk a block from the strip and it is a different world. As is every other city I have been to where Gambling is legal. It is all nice a purdy around the casino areas while mere blocks away it is a toilet.

Lets be clear what the issue here is.
This is not about gambling per se.
This is about allowing slot machines to go into the race tracks that are already here—-which are owned by the family of the Speaker of the Texas House.
That’s it. If it was about “gambling” it would be about allowing it everywhere, not just in places that benefit powerful politicians.

This is great. I can oppose casino gambling on various moral grounds, including the immorality of expanding state coffers.
Thanks, Sarge! -

We don’t have a revenue problem. We have a spending problem.

They thought itโd be a good idea to take the trailer around the block to remove them. They turned the corner and the trailer went right and the truck when left. (Yes, the safety chains WERE hooked up) They seriously mowed down my neighbors mailbox
You might want to invest in some heaver chains, I’ve noticed a lot of trailers that have wimpy chains on them. I’m betting that your horse trailer could gross out @ over 2 tons.

What it really means is that a bunch of nanny state do-gooders think they have the power to use government to control the lives of others to the Nth degree.
What about the people of a county? city? small town? neighborhood?

There’s also the issue of expanding government.
State regulated gambling translates into a State Gambling Commission with all of the high paid appointments that will be available for politicians to reward cronies and donors with, along with the bureaucracy that goes with it.
Want government to stay small or get smaller?
Don’t let it do more stuff.

MEXICO CITY (AP) โ A magnitude-6.5 earthquake shook a wide area of southern and central Mexico on Thursday, sending people fleeing into the streets, but there were no initial reports of damage.
The epicenter was located near the town of Las Choapas, about 370 miles (600 kilometers) southeast of Mexico City, where it swayed buildings for several seconds. In the Gulf coast state of Veracruz, people ran from their homes and school children assembled on playgrounds.
But Gov. Javier Duarte de Ochoa there was no damage near the epicenter nor in major cities in the oil-producing state.
“Veracruz is completely quiet without problems,” he told state television. “It was felt all over the state, but nothing major happened. It was only a scare.”
The also was temblor was felt strongly in the state of Chiapas, bordering Guatemala, where there also were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The U.S. Geological survey said the quake hit a depth of 104 miles (167 kilometers).
So what happens when a tsunami from a Japanese quake hits on from a Mexican quake?

We need government with unlimited power to keep us safe from ourselves, and out of the sewer!
As to those who blow their grocery money on gambling, what do we as a society want to do with them?
What gives “society” the right to “do” anything with them? Leave ‘um alone. Some will learn their lesson, others will not. Making gambling illegal may make you feel good, but it doesn’t stop the behavior, at all.
While in his 20s, mom42’s future hubby went bankrupt because of his poker addiction. He recovered, swore off it, and became a successful programmer — Until his morbid obesity destroyed his health. I used to have to drive up there every couple of weeks to help them with house and yard work. They were living “pay check” to pay check off of her retirement and his disability insurance, and not doing well at it.
A couple of years ago, I called to let them know I’d be by over the weekend. He said it wouldn’t be necessary because they had the money to pay for yard and housekeeping, and instead, they wanted to come down here and treat me to a Perry’s pork chop.
They pulled up in a brand new Chevy Silverado. He told me that he paid cash for it. I was curious, but didn’t ask.
After he died, mom42 told me the source of their income. The dude could count cards like you wouldn’t believe, Texas hold-um had become popular, and there were plenty of newbies ripe for the picking. She’d drive him to three or four games a week, he’d hobble in with his walker (and depends) and Texas clean-um out.
At the time of his death, they had nearly $100K in the bank, and an undisclosed sum stashed away in the gun safe. He knew that he didn’t have long in this world, and was concerned about her future to the degree that he was will to break the law to make sure she was cared for.

@38 Non-sequitur-box
Bob wants to live in a sewer, I prefer not too.
I’ve been to Vegas many times (on business.) Like any other city, there are good parts and bad parts. Your “conclusion” that I want to live in a sewer is neither rational or logical. It seems to be based purely on emotion and anecdotal perception.
While I agree that self governance is good, there has to be a balance between it and limited government power. Otherwise, you have a situation of mob rule, where as long as 50% + 1 voters decide anything it becomes the law of the state or the community, no checks, no balances, just pure mob authority.

Someone somewhere probably has the answer to this question already figured out, but I believe that the state has already maxed out its revenue streams. Most people and most businesses operate on a budget (or a paycheck or a credit card or whatever that somehow places a limit on their spending). If taxes go up, something else has to go down. If fuel costs rise, something has to give – drive less miles, use more efficient vehicles, get others to deliver for us, etc.; but no matter what, if one item goes up, another goes down. If the good citizens of Texas decide they prefer to gamble with their discretionary funds rather that go see the Texans or the Astros, so be it. If they would rather gamble than eat, then OK. My point is that no matter what pocket it comes out of, there would most likely be little if any net increase in revenues to the state if gambling were legalized.
For instance, how much in fuel tax, tire tax, oil tax, sales tax (cars last longer if they aren’t driven so much) etc. would be lost if those folks who frequent the out of state gambling venues were able to walk to the corner casino? We already see the effect of fuel efficiency on state budgets, causing them to want to charge taxes by the mile driven rather than by the gallon purchased, because their revenues are down by virtue of the public doing exactly what they have been asked to do.
I suspect that if they legalized everything you could imagine and taxed it, the net revenues to the government would not change materially over time.

Re: Gambling
In Canada where it is legal, there are two venues outside of what is available in Texas. One if Video lottery terminals and casinos. The VLT’s are in every bar and the casinos are stand alone. The VLT’s are owned by the government and licensed to the bar. They pay out a ticket that the bar then redeems for cash, similiar to what happens here but there it is above board. The bar receives, I believe, 25% of the revenue and the government gets some and the franchisee, who maintains the machines gets some. Everyone makes a butt load of money.
The casinos are opertated by private groups under license to the government. The games are actually run by trained volunteers, under the supervision of highly trained staff. The volunteers are actually working for various charitable groups, boy scouts, schools, church groups or any registered charity that qualifies. The operators get a cut of the earnings, the government gets their cut and the charity gets a cut.It works so well for the charities that a lot of the annoying door to door and phone call fund raising has stopped. My step-daughters ski team availed themselves of this and pretty much covered their expenses, which saved us a boat load of money.
The system works well for the operators and the charities. The government of course is still broke.

Why is it that you support throwing a gambling addict out on his ear, but want to pay for treatment for drug addicts?

I’ve seen quite a few articles in the past several months that have said Federal revenue as a percent of economic activity has been very consistent, regardless of who actually pays the taxes or what the rates might have been. With very few and small excursions, the rate was almost always between 19 and 20%.

WB, why don’t we throw the gambling addicts in jail too?
I prefer treatment over incarceration because the former is far less costly, and is appropriate only for the small minority that are actually addicted to truly dangerous substances.
It’s a matter of fiscal conservatism and logical thinking, as opposed to self righteous moral authoritarian social conservative blue nosed nanny staters that get their kinky kicks out of telling everybody how to live their lives.

Maybe he was just really stylish…

Seriously, put it to a vote of the people. Let US decide if we want gambling.
Now that’s just WAY too logical. It’ll never work. ๐
Seriously though, I think that’s the best idea. Vote and then we all live with the outcome whether it was in our favor or not. For me, even though I favor it, not having gambling here wouldn’t much affect me one way or another. Definitely a “meh” issue for me. If we don’t have casinos here it gives me as good an excuse as any to go to Las Vegas once in a while.

How did that work in California with prop 8 and Wisonsin with their recent election. Those unhappy with the results don’t tend to sit down and shut up.
In my view a small minority want it, a small minority are opposed and the rest of us are just ambivelent.

Sarge is right about the state needs to CUT FRIGGIN SPENDING.
Bob4and 20blackbirds is right that the state need to STAY THE HECK OUT OF THE GAMBLING PERSONAL BEHAVIOR DECISION.
Bottom line: Let private investment build casinos if they choose and the state should not treat them any differently from any other business, with a similar tax structure. Let the local communities decide yes or no whether the casino will be built in their neighborhood. The state needs to cut spending in the following ways:
1) No more “base line” budgeting. This means no more automatic increases in the budget.
2) No more spend it or lose it operations. Most gov’t budgets contain a provision that if your department does not spend its entire budget you will lose whatever you have saved instead of having it roll over to next year. If we change the procedure, individual departments could save up for improvements just like we mere pathetic citizens have to do.
3) The civil service protections must change. It must be easier to fire incompetent/crooked employees.
4) No more lifetime pensions. All retirement funding must shift to an IRA format, after the employee is on for 5 years or more he is fully vested in the state contribution to his IRA and he is always fully vested in his own contributions. This will end the public pension nightmare that is designed to bankrupt the system.
5) Stop paying for unfunded federal mandates. Texas is a sovereign state. We were a sovereign nation before we joined the union under treaty. That treaty had obligations that the union had to fulfill, like defending the border from Mexican invasion, and those obligations have not been met.
6) Stop spending money that the state constitution does not explicitly permit. If the above is done we will not have budget problems.

Here’s something to think about then.
Texas House Speaker Joe Straus IIIโs family could earn tens of millions of dollars if lawmakers and voters agree to let racetracks install slot machines. The magnitude of the payout is spelled out in a pending lawsuit in Dallas County. Itโs unusualโeven in Texasโto encounter a single piece of legislation that has the potential to put millions of dollars in the pocket of a top state leader.
So. Not only are they making this about “gambling” when its really about slot machines in race tracks, its about slot machines in race tracks that make one of the most powerful politicians in the state richer than he already is.
How long are we going to put up with that kind of thing?
-
Me? Iโd like to vote on gambling in general, as in allowing casinos to operate here. Slots in race tracks? Thatโs fine too. Truthfully havenโt given it a whole lot of thought though.

#59 I dodged nothing
You need to work on your dodging the question technique. Allow me to restate:
Why is it that you support throwing a gambling addict out on his ear, but want to pay for treatment for drug addicts?
I clearly stated the fact that treatment for those who actually need it is far less costly than 40 years of the prohibition/enforcement/incarceration approach. What part of that did you not understand?

Who said anything about jail?
So stop dodging the question. If you fall off the fence on the side of prohibition of gambling, how do you think that prohibition should be enforced? Incarceration for breaking the laws is not uncommon at all.
So, do you think gamblers should be tossed in jail, or not? Should we use SWAT teams to enforce the will of the people and keep our neighborhoods from becoming sewers of inequity?
Once government is endowed with power, that power will be abused. The less power, the less it will be abused.

The US Constitution was written by men who were disgusted, rightfully so, at the abuse of government power. The constitution was written in such a fashion as to put chains on the scope and reach of the federal government. The document was constructed to allow for change, should it be needed, but that change was, by design, darned difficult in order to prevent frivolity. The following statement by Bob4and20Blackbirds would be heartily endorsed by the authors of the US Constitution and that is why they wrote the document the way they did.

Well stated Bob, I agree with you and the empirical evidence in favor of this position is overwhelming.

TT: How did you hormone crazed students like the first slide describing human sexuality?
Here it is in a nutshell:
Most men want sex almost all the time, most wimmins donโt. Men put up with love and/or marriage to get sex and wimmins put with sex to get love and/or marriage. Those couples who are serious about the whole relationship thing understand this and work together so both sides are accommodated. Sometimes it takes a while to get the wimmins trained to bring beer and sammiches promptly but eventually it will happen.I would like to know how you expounded on this:>)

And to be absolutely clear on what we’ll be voting on.
Its NOT to allow gambling.
Its to create a new State Bureacracy
House Joint Resolution 112, which is supported by the Texas Gaming Association, would call for an election on a constitutional amendment that would allow the creation of a five-person Texas Gaming Commission. A fiscal note has not been published.
Once created, the Texas Gaming Commission would issue up to eight licenses to operate slot machines at racetracks. It also would issue up to six licenses for casino gaming in different urban areas in Texas.
Additionally, the bill also would allow the commission up to two licenses for casino gaming on islands in the Gulf of Mexico.
The commission would also an Indian tribe to operate slot machines or have casino gambling.
So what we would actually be voting on is the creation of 5 more appointed positions (probably at a couple hunnert grand a year) and a new Commission (that would need offices, equipment, vehicles, and employees to support the fat cats) who would be apppointed by politicians who would be getting rich off the licenses the folks they appoint to the position would grant.
Nice work if you can get it.

I used it as a first slide, to get a laugh. It did. I posted this last night:
Survived another sexuality class. My bouncers said that the students were actually listening, and I agree. There were a couple of tough girls that seemed to be blowing off the class, but one of them was actually taking a lot of notes. It was weird that her gal friend threw away her notes at the end of class. I guess the โcrab in the bucketโ syndrome was kicking in.
Miss Bag of Chips and her boyfriend actually seemed to be listening. Miss BoC not as intently, but I saw him leaning back in his chair (away from her) and paying attention. She would listen for a while and then put her head down on the table.
I asked the class at the end if any of them were actually going to at least consider holding off sex until marriage. Four of them were brave enough to raise their hands. My bouncer said he wished that he had seen my presentation when he was a teenager. I had confiscated a note during class, which had a lot of Spanish in it, and he (the bouncer) was trying to read it. Unfortunately, his heritage is Puerto Rican, and some of the words were probably teen slang. He was able to make out something about โtelling your motherโ about sex. It seems that the girl might have been thinking about talking to her mother or her friendโs mother about a sexual relationship. Thatโs a first step, anyway.

Which is a dam good argument for not establishing State Regulated Gambling.
Thanks. It’s good that we can agree (on some thingies.)
Even if our masters grant we the people the freedom to gamble (in certain places, at certain times,) it will be heavily regulated and controlled, and the laws and regulations will be written by the corporatist politicians on the advice of the interests who $lobby$ them, and who will financially benefit from a protected market.
Meanwhile, the semi-rational social conservatives will get pseudo-libertarian feel good chills over their magnamous generosity in “allowing” people to think for themselves, on the condition that they do so only under the government’s powerful thumb.

Who appoints the Commissioners?
How much will they be paid?
What will be the budget to run the office?
What happened the last time somebody created a government commission to oversee and grant licenses to businesses that make money off leisure activities like, oh I don’t know, sports franchises?
Are we going to end up spending tax money to build a casino at the Astro Dome complex?
If you’re going to legalize gambling, legalize gambling.
If you want to make it possible for fat cat polticians to use your tax money to reward thier freinds, vote for the bill that’s being considered.

Didnโt Bob once say that if you canโt enforce a law, you should repeal it?
Among other things, I’ve pointed out that the war on a plant is unenforceable, ineffective, and a complete waste of taxpayer money, and that only a brainwashed authoritarian or a professional politician would think that any of that would change after 40 years of that failed effort.
There is a huge difference between that, and saying that any law that does not deter the harmful behavior 100% should be repealed. That would be as stupid as Hammie’s lame insults in-lieu of rational arguments today.

The topic is presented in this way:
1) Resources – I give them a list of books and pass some around during the presentation
2) Definitions – dating vs. courtship, intimacy (physical vs emotional), love, lust, masturbation, abstinence, etc.
3) Illustration of physiology and chemicals produced during sexual activity – endorphins, oxytocin, stimulus/response reactions, etc.
4) Discussion of brain development (or lack thereof) at the teen level
5) How the previous two items, plus cultural pressures, leave the teenager/young adult vulnerable to succumbing to sexual pressures. One of my favorite slides has the famous Indiana Jones sword/gun fight with the caption “Teens trying to manage sex is like taking a knife to a gunfight”. I like it, but it never gets the reaction I hope for. I’m still leaving it in.
6) The Catholic ideal of a relationship – a God centered, monogamous relationship, and how premarital/extramarital sexual relationships cut God out of that relationship. Also how masturbation affects the individual and his/her relationship to significant others. There’s some scripture thrown in near these slides, but I try not to get too preachy. Nothing like turning a teenager off and missing the whole message
7) What is the difference between chastity and virginity? The possibility of regaining chastity even after virginity is lost. Is it possible to be chaste and not virginal? (Absolutely! A married couple is chaste.) Why date if you don’t want to get married? Why is this not fair to the dating partner?
8 ) How to handle social pressures regarding dating and sexual relationships. Tools on how to control sexual urges, avoid near occasions of sin, manage problematic friendships, etc. Basically, if you know your endorphins are overpowering your better judgment, then avoid getting those brain chemicals revved up in the first place.
9) What to do while not having sex – finding new hobbies, discovering one’s self, being open to new avenues of self-fulfillment. Not being tied down to one person at such a young age opens them up opportunities that they’ll never have again. (THIS is where some of them really start to perk up. They never thought of NOT having a boy/girl friend could be such a freeing circumstance.) They need to find out what God has planned for them.
10) Can one really live a chaste life? Can a teenager survive without having sex? I give them a website and discuss the fact that there are whole communities of people their age living chastely, having fun, and supporting each other. I also play a phone call from KSEV from when Pat Gray was doing podcasts, of a 19 year old virgin and how happy she was to sort the creeps from the rest and not have all that emotional baggage of crappy boyfriends. At the end of it all, there are usually a few questions but no time. I answered what I could, and I’ll try to pick up the rest at a later class.
My bouncer couple stayed to watch the whole thing. They thought it was really interesting that I went into the physiological thing so much at the beginning. As I explained to them, “If you don’t know what makes it go, how do you know how to stop the darn thing?”

So, do you think gamblers should be tossed in jail, or not? Should we use SWAT teams to enforce the will of the people and keep our neighborhoods from becoming sewers of inequity?
If the offense is flagrant enough, then jail time might be warranted. Generally fines and loss pf proceeds should work. I am in favor of allowing low-level governments to decide whether they want gambling in their communities, pretty much like bars are regulated now.
Not every arrest is made with a SWAT team. Even you know that.

Telling me that doing anything to increase the amount of money the State separates from the people is a good idea is like telling me I should send Charlie Sheen a case of scotch. He doesnโt need it and it will probably only make things worse.
Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys.

I just took Senator Jim DeMint’s Senate Conservatives Fund membership survey for 2011. >5000 responses so far. I joined this group before the 2010 midterms and have donated to it. Membership self-identifies as heavily Tea Party leaning.
The list of possible 2012 presidential candidates is a bit scary. There are people listed I’ve never heard of at all. 10% for Donald Trump is scary. I guess the best news is 22% are undecided, since we don’t know who is really running yet.
Not sure if this link to the results is accessible to all, but it’s worth a try.

27 Can a man take fire in his bosom
And his clothes not be burned?

And his feet not be scorched?
29 So is the one who goes in to his neighbor’s wife;
Whoever touches her will not go unpunished.

#91 TT: Sounds like a pretty good class. This quote could be useful the next time you do the class:
Prov 6:27-29
27 Can a man take fire in his bosom
And his clothes not be burned?
28 Or can a man walk on hot coals
And his feet not be scorched?
29 So is the one who goes in to his neighbor’s wife;
Whoever touches her will not go unpunished.

I try not to mention “punishment” too much at this age. It sounds too much like Mom and Dad saying “Because I said so!” I try to focus on the positive – why it’s good to wait for your life partner, why sex within marriage is so much better for you than marriage outside of marriage, the potential experiences that can be had as a single, etc.,
Carrots work a lot better with teenagers. They may not like carrots much, but they like them better than sticks.

Heh Bob42 just pulled the tail of the jackass. Lucky you did not get kicked,
there are good parts and bad parts.
Okay Bob here goes. Look it up for yourself, Google is your friend. In EVERY case where legalized casinos have been approved, within 3 years the crime rate goes through the roof. The area around Atlantic City has experienced advanced rural decline and deterioration rather then promised revitalization. Apparently you did not walk just blocks off the strip. Bad news big time.
Your โconclusionโ that I want to live in a sewer is neither rational or logical. It seems to be based purely on emotion and anecdotal perception.
Naw you don’t Bob. You just want Folsom Street foisted on everyone. You want to take away my right to not hire freakazoids that if given a chance to come to work high because their drug of choice is now legal, you would deny me the right to deny renting to Fred and Barney because i disagree with teh gay marriage.
Sorry Bob there is nothing anecdotal about what I say nor emotional. I am far from being an emotional flaming hyper sensitive baby.

Speaking at the IDF’s Southern Command Thursday night, Defense Minister Ehud Barak spoke about an earlier incident in which a teenager riding in a school bus was critically injured by an anti-tank missile fired from the Gaza Strip.

Ain’t it interesting that many desperate people turn to gambling be it in the form of scratch offs, a card game or slot machine to get out of their problems. And here we have the State of Texas obviously in financial straights cause they ain’t got the guts to cut programs are thinking about legalizing gambling. An act of desperation?
No where has gambling solved any states problems. Louisiana is a prime example.

For all you nostalgiageeks:
Almost 30 years after its original release, the Commodore 64 is making a comeback as a high-end PC – and it’ll run Crysis.
Commodore’s announced it’s to recreate the 8-bit machine near-perfectly, and boost its original 64 kilobytes of memory up to 2GB of DDR3 (expandable to 4GB), with a 1.8ghz dual-core Intel Atom D525.
The new Commodore 64 can run original 8-bit games through an emulator and is said to be “as close to the original in design as humanly possible”, with genuine Cherry brand key switches and the exact same shape keys as the original.

#122 Squawkie, are your stats a result of people being “allowed” to gamble, or a result of government protecting the wealthy and influential gaming interests by geographically restricting it to certain areas?
If you and your nearby neighbors don’t want a glitzy casino in your backyard, fine. That’s a far cry from the state wide criminalization of nearly all forms of gambling that exists today. Could we at least agree that the proposed legislation is likely to be abused and used to create a protected market for those who are funding such a compromise?
My take: At a state or national level, it ain’t none of the gubmint’s bidness. But then our state gubmint doesn’t have much of a track record at minding their own bidness.
If your neighbor holds a regular poker or other form of game on his property, or plays online individually, it is up to you to substantiate and provide a rational reason for the laws that prohibit them from doing so. I don’t think you can. “It neither picks your pockets nor breaks your legs.”

How can you swap two values in memory without using any other memory? IOW you can’t copy one of the values to a third location as in:

temp = x
x = y
y = tempThe above method uses the extra memory location “temp”

#139 I used a single instruction compare/swap “hand loop” (called such because you dialed it into core using binary switches) to diagnose intermittent register failures on now ancient mainframes that kept registers in separate hardware from other storage, in the interest of speed. Once it was looping at full machine speed, you had to put the scope on all 9 bits, and be patient, but once you found the flakey bit it stood out like a sore thumb.
But now I’m dating myself. (I’ll spare y’all the obligatory Christine O’Donnell joke.)

Gambling is not prohibited by the federal gubment, ergo:
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
States can decide whether they want to prohibit, regulate, or open the whole thing up for a gambling free-for-all. It’s not up to ANYONE here to provide Teh Bobo any explanation, rational or otherwise, as to why the state of Texas chooses to disallow casino or any other form of gambling. If Teh Bobo wants legalized gambling it is up to Teh Bobo to convince enough voters to elect representatives that will make it so. Sorry Bobo, but that’s how a constitutional republic works.

Things is gettin downright interesting in Wisconsin.
Update: Randy Melchert says Prosserโs netted another 200 votes in New Berlin while Kloppenburgโs only picked up a few in the (still ongoing) re-canvassing of Madison. Good lord. We might actually win this.
Update: Whoops, tiny mistake in the last post. New Berlin isnโt a county but a city in Waukesha County (which was heavily pro-Prosser). Now corrected.
Update: We are indeed trapped on a seesaw. Randy Melchert is still updating and says that, after several new counties have reported, Prosserโs actually lost votes on the day. Kloppenburgโs lead has expanded by 55 votes, putting her overall advantage at 259.
Update: Sorry, my mistake: I misread Melchertโs numbers. Kloppenburgโs overall lead hasnโt grown, itโs shrunk. According to Melchert, itโs now 83 votes overall, down from 204 this morning.Latest info?
After Tuesday nightโs Wisconsin Supreme Court election, a computer error in heavily Republican Waukesha County failed to send election results for the entire City of Brookfield to the Associated Press. The error, revealed today, would give incumbent Supreme Court Justice David Prosser a net 7,381 votes against his challenger, attorney Joanne Kloppenburg. On Wednesday, Kloppenburg declared victory after the AP reported she finished the election with a 204-vote lead, out of nearly 1.5 million votes cast.
On election night, AP results showed a turnout of 110,000 voters in Waukesha County โ well short of the 180,000 voters that turned out last November, and 42 percent of the countyโs total turnout. By comparison, nearly 90 percent of Dane County voters who cast a ballot in November turned out to vote for Kloppenburg. -

Yes, and as a boolean operator XOR exists in the instruction set of pretty much all processors if I’m not mistaken. So bang through the math using Pyro’s example where:
x = 10110010
y = 10010110First, x = x XOR y
now
x = 00100100
y = 10010110Second, y = y XOR x
results in
x = 00100100
y = 10110010finally, x = x XOR y
gives you
x = 10010110
y = 10110010which is a swap of their original values, if I’ve done my math correctly.
(for those of you who don’t know boolean algebra, XOR results in a 1 output only when both inputs are different – spent many hours in college doing this stuff many moons ago)

And I said gambling is not prohibited by the federal government, and that is a fact. If it were we wouldn’t have thousands of casinos, racetracks, Jai Alai frontons, etc. scattered all over the dang country. Duh!

As the one in the family with an interest in genealogy, I received the family history from the German (mother’s) side of the family. One of my most prized items is a set of letters. They are not the original handwritten ones, but one set is typed up in German and they are translated into English. It is interesting to note the price on items and what they talked about. There was mention of the Catholic persecution in Germany, and how they prayed for their families and friends back in the old country. The saddest thing I read, however, was the story of two young men, riding horseback from New Braunfels to Fredericksburg. Along the way, one of them sliced his wrist while cutting some bread and cheese for a meal. He was rushed to Fredericksburg, where the doctor treated his wound with wax, hoping to keep him from bleeding to death. Of course the wax didn’t totally staunch the bleeding, and any movement of the wrist would break any kind of seal he might have had. The other young man rushed back to New Braunfels to get the parents, who made it there just in time to see and hold their son one last time before he died.
It really makes one grateful for what we have today.

Hey! I have that T-shirt! Enjoy seeing people read it and then look puzzled. You know they don’t get it as soon as they say “ten” and not “one zero”.

#166 Tedtam, your geek credentials are clearly unquestionable.
I was only x’0C’ years old when I first shoved a stack of cards into the reader and IPL’d the beast. You, on the other hand, cut your teeth on a WANG. Nobody can beat that (without risking blindness.)
Time to run. This has been fun. And I needed a distraction.

#77 Ms. Harper: Senior portraits are not the same as when we were kids. Neither are proms, homecomings, etc. High School portraits are done on location or with some really bad-a backgrounds. I’m poor. I can’t hire a photographer but am doing trade-out with a wonderful friend of mine. We hafta use real backgrounds. Had to start early since we wanted the beautiful field of yellow flowers offa 242. We don’t hafta worry about anymore until about July. Outdoor shoots will early. (sweat and all). Next shoot is at an old, abandoned slaughterhouse near us. Hey, it’s all about capturing the personality! We’ll do some serious stuff in July. /your 80 post got a snikker!!!
#82 IPA Bill: Hiya shuuug! Welcome back!
#86: Hiya Malcolm. Sorry about the extra chemo. Puleeeeze keep us posted and you are in my prayers. I’ve had NUMEROUS prayers answered lately. Keeping the kids safe and the latest is the WI Supreme Court vote. Ain’t no way the libs and pull 10K votes outa their butts! ๐
#90 BigTex: The 1st showing is on April 15th in Houston. I’m attending the 1:35p showing on the 16th in Sugarland. Then I’m off to a Tea Party in The Woodlands.

Maybe the Republicans finally learned something. Let the demomcrats sneak in all their votes, as needed, before releasing their tallies.

I don’t know. They’s got some big wiss butts. If you can tell where the head ends and the butt begins, anyway. And I never misunderestimate the ability of the left to lie, cheat, and steal.
Especially when it comes to elections. -

ARRRRGGGHHH! I would love to go and see Herman Cain! Lovely has requested my presence for a mommy/daughter sorority event that weekend. And I may bring some of her stuff back. She’ll be leaving her last dorm room soon….and be on her own before I know it.
Somebody – quick – hand me a tissue.

PS….both make my toes curl. I could not even imagine me, burying them. I’d be in some serious trouble. I have met my match. And I’m a racist, ta boot!!! Imagine that……
Even though this particular tea pary is the one I split on because they are a PAC, I’m going to see Herman Cain and give Ted Poe a bumper sticker. “The GOP Surrenders Almost As Fast As The French Do”. I’ve met him before. He’ll love it. ๐

I’m so confused. Is the toe dig different than the toe curl? And where does the hair twirl and eye bat fall into all this?

Toe digs go with eye bats, hair twirls, and puppy dog eyes to get her way. She uses them to get her way.
Toe curls are caused on her by others whom she is sweet on for one reason or another.

hair twirl – eye catching movement, leading to toe digs and other flirty movements
eye bat – a way of flirting up close, designed to make the male feel sooooo good about himself
toe curl – what results from the flirty movementsI hope that clears things up fer ya.
