UPDATE: I see Wagonburner has opened an OC thread. I shall defer to his topic matter.
UPDATE: Wagonburner has rescheduled his OC thread, so we now return to our original programming. The Keystone Cops are busy this morning.
Well, I finally got to sleep in my own bed last night. Our trip to Lubbock was fruitful, sort of, for Handsome Son. He has a spot on the basketball team if we can get him enrolled, and therein lies the rub. We’re working on it. Or rather, panic has set in for Handsome, and HE’s working on it.
He did get to see his first tumbleweed, first big dust devil, first High Plains landscape. That was all interesting to him. It was a great bonding experience for us. Usually he just kinda grunts at me and shows up for the occasional meal. He might wash dishes once a week and if we push r-e-a-l hard, he might make time to half-wiss mow the grass. He’s a good kid, just not motivated to do anything that doesn’t involve a bouncing orange ball and sweaty men chasing it. Being forced to spend some time together was good. We had real conversations, and we managed to regain some of our childhood back with the “tuck into bed” tickle, resulting in his instigating a pillow fight (one of our favorite things to do when they were both children), and after I whacked him good in the face, I asked if he wanted me to kiss it and make it better. He said yes, as he laid on the bed holding his face, so the Kissy Monster made his appearance as well. Handsome and I were both laughing and hugging. Good times. It may well be the last time I get to have those childhood moments with him again.
It was about nine hours up, nine hours back, a little driving around Lubbock, viewing the campus, talking with various school officials, working on my motel bed at night, and then handling several business calls on the way home. Yesterday afternoon I got some gardening done, whacked a few weeds, then cooked dinner. (I REALLY needed something to do that didn’t involve sitting!) I was whupped come bedtime, and I slept like a rock. My eyes are still tired today, though my hiny is not as sore as it was on the trip up. I found the seat cushion I packed, and it made a world of difference once I actually started using it. /faceplant facepalm
So I’m still a little tired, but there’s a mountain of paperwork to be done, and now I have a new list of “to do” items. No rest for the weary.

btw – it’s “facepalm” – “faceplant” is what happens when someone falls less than gracefully and lands face-first, generally in an athletic endeavor (e.g., skateboarding when they try to grind a rail, fall off, and grind their face into the pavement; skiing when a guy does a trick and lands face-first into a snowbank).

Well, after viewing this video, I have now seen the error of my ways for lo these many years. I felt a lump in my throat as I was watching, but I soon discovered that it was my breakfast coming back up. There should be a prize if you can stand to watch the whole thing.

ATLANTA, Ga. – A man police say grabbed paper towels from a maintenance cart at a rail station in Atlanta and used them to blow his nose wound up in jail.
So far, no big deal – guy has a sinus issue and has no hankie. He grabs a paper towel, an item destined for similar use in a bathroom, and blows nose on it instead of the “one finger snot rocket”.
A police report says a man identified as Alfred Murphy grabbed the towels at a MARTA station Monday afternoon, and a transit system police officer told him he couldn’t do that.
While perhaps technically correct, the sniveling little piss-ant metro cop should have perhaps advised against doing a similar thing in the future and left it at that, but no. . . . .
It says the officer asked Murphy to leave and instead he picked up a police phone and complained about being assaulted.
Now comes the other side of stupidity:
The report says officers were summoned and Murphy struggled with them.
Note to all: If you struggle with the police you will go to jail.
We have an epidemic of racial hypersensitivity and there is no good that can come from it. If you say a black man is singing out of tune, you are by definition now branded a “racist” and the fact that the guy is 2 1/2 notes off is irrelevant. The transit cop above was being an uptight hypervigilant jackass AND the turd who struggled with the police was looking to start an incident and was most likely totally uncooperative. They are both at fault, they are both jackasses and they both add bricks to the wall between the races in addition to the wall between cops and civilians. They both need a severe ass whippin. -

Well I guess I will have to try again, thanks hal, you pos.
COMPOUND STUPIDITYATLANTA, Ga. – A man police say grabbed paper towels from a maintenance cart at a rail station in Atlanta and used them to blow his nose wound up in jail.
Perhaps the action was not welcome, however there was no “theft” and grabbing a paper towel off the maintenance cart is FAR SUPERIOR to the one fingered snot rocket on the pavement.
The [police] report says Murphy said he was entitled to them because he’d paid his fare.
It says the officer asked Murphy to leave and instead he picked up a police phone and complained about being assaulted.
The precious paper towels were likely intended for the public restroom, where they would be freely available, so why ask the guy to leave – what was the friggin crime?? This is where the entire situation should have been diffused by the transit wannabee p!ss-ant cop. The cop should have simply advised him not to do it again in the future and made sure that he was supplied with enough paper towels to get him where he needed to go. That would have been what a good public servant would have done.
On the other side of the coin, the trouble making perp/victim should have been nice and not grabbed a police phone and escalated the situation making a false report about being assaulted. Read the article and see just how screwed up the hypersensitive can cause things to be. -

Could be trouble in Wisconsin
Update from Richard Baehr:
Kloppenberg has taken the lead, now 140. Ten precincts left (out of 3630), and all but 1 are in counties she won. It is a huge advantage to head into a recount as the candidate with the lead, especially in a “good government” state like Wisconsin, with a GOP governor who has reviled by most of the state and national media. Kloppenberg lead is now almost 447 with 5 precincts left. 2 of the 5 are in Milwaukee County, and unless they are suburban precincts, Prosser will lose.
Counties with big Democrtic advantage have slowly announced the the last precincts released during the night and early morning — shades of Illinois presidential race in 1960 (how many votes do we need?).

There are some severe mental illnesses that justify treatment using psychotropic medications, but considering the increase in their use for trivial degrees of depression (for example) over the last 40 years, one is encouraged to follow the money trail.
This powerful video contains interviews with experts, parents and victims. It is the story of the high-income partnership between drug companies and psychiatry which has created an $80 billion profit from the peddling of psychotropic drugs to an unsuspecting public. How did these drugs, with no target illness, no known curative powers and a long and extensive list of side effects, become the go-to treatment for every kind of psychological distress?
In a minority of cases, the benefits are worth the side effects. But for the vast majority of people, drugs are bad, mmmmkay?

Once again Serge’ the Pius missing the point of the discussion. The righteous one who passes judgement from his selfish self centered throne.
Yeah Serge’ I read it.
But just for grins I will make my point once again.
1. The Muslims are at fault
2. Seems to me Terry Jones has been vindicated. He wanted to make a point and the Muslims accommodated
3. The Generals committed an act of cowardice in the face of the enemy
4. The Government sanctioned an act that is tantamount to denying a citizens right to free speech
5. And as usual others in the government is considering ways to punish a person like Terry Jones
6. The government is now considering ways to to take away our freedom of speech.and finally people like you think that people disagree with you are sick? What is that all about Serge’? Are you better than anyone else? Do you want to join the government in stifling differing opinions? Pray for yourself Serge’ you need it.

This just came in the spitbox and it seems to make real clear sense, given the BEHAVIOR of the potus:
OBAMA’S COLLEGE ROOMMATE SPEAKS OUT
By Wayne Allyn Root , June 6th, 2010Barack Hussien Obama is no fool. He is not incompetent.
To the contrary, he is brilliant. He knows exactly what he’s doing.
He is purposely overwhelming the U.S. economy to create systemic failure,
economic crisis and social chaos — thereby destroying capitalism and
our country from within.Barack Hussien Obama was my college classmate
(Columbia University, class of ’83).
He is a devout Muslim do not be fooled.
Look at his Czars…anti-business..anti- american.
As Glenn Beck correctly predicted from day one, Barack Hussien Obama is following the plan of Cloward & Piven, two professors at Columbia University. They outlined a plan to socialize America by overwhelming the system with government spending and entitlement demands.Add up the clues below. Taken individually they’re alarming.
Taken as a whole, it is a brilliant, Machiavellian game plan to turn
the United States into a socialist/Marxist state with a permanent majority
that desperately needs government for survival … and can be counted
on to always vote for bigger government.
Why not? They have no responsibility to pay for it.
Universal health care . The health care bill had very little to do with health
care. It had everything to do with unionizing millions of hospital and
health care workers, as well as adding 15,000 to 20,000 new IRS agents (who will join government employee unions). Obama doesn’t care that giving free health care to 30 million Americans will add trillions to the national debt. What he does care about is that it cements the dependence of those 30 million voters to Democrats and big government. Who but a socialist revolutionary would pass this reckless spending bill in the middle of a depression?
Cap and trade. Like health care legislation having nothing to do with
health care, cap and trade has nothing to do with global warming. It has everything to do with redistribution of income, government control
of the economy and a criminal payoff to Obama’s biggest contributors.
Those powerful and wealthy unions and contributors (like GE, which owns
NBC, MSNBC and CNBC) can then be counted on to support everything Obama wants. They will kick-back hundreds of millions of dollars in contributions to Obama and the Democratic Party to keep them in power.
The bonus is that all the new taxes on Americans with bigger cars,
bigger homes and businesses helps Obama “spread the wealth around.”Make Puerto Rico a state. Why? Who’s asking for a 51st state?
Who’s asking for millions of new welfare recipients and government
entitlement addicts in the middle of a depression? Certainly not American taxpayers. But this has been Barack Hussien Obama’s plan all along. His goal is to add two new Democrat senators, five Democrat congressman and a million loyal Democratic voters who are dependent on big government.
Legalize 12 million illegal Mexican immigrants.
Just giving these 12 million potential new citizens free health care alone could overwhelm the system and bankrupt America.
But it adds 12 million reliable new Democrat voters who can be counted
on to support big government. Add another few trillion dollars in welfare, aid to dependent children, food stamps, free medical, education, tax credits for the poor, and eventually Social Security .Stimulus and bailouts. Where did all that money go? It went to Democrat contributors, organizations (ACORN), and unions — including billions of dollars to save or create jobs of government employees across the country. It went to save GM and Chrysler so that their employees could
keep paying union dues. It went to AIG so that Goldman Sachs could be bailed out (after giving Obama almost $1 million in contributions).A staggering $125 billion went to teachers (thereby protecting their union dues).
All those public employees will vote loyally Democrat to protect their
bloated salaries and pensions that are bankrupting America. The country goes broke, future generations face a bleak future, but Obama, the Democrat Party, government, and the unions grow more powerful. The ends justify the means.
Raise taxes on small business owners, high-income earners, and job
creators. Put the entire burden on only the top 20 percent of taxpayers, redistribute the income, punish success, and reward those who did
nothing to deserve it (except vote for Obama). Reagan wanted to dramatically cut taxes in order to starve the government. Barack Obama wants to dramatically raise taxes to starve his political opposition. With the acts outlined above, Barack Hussien Obama and his regime have created a vast and rapidly expanding constituency of voters dependent on big government; a vast privileged class of public employees who work for big government; and a government dedicated to destroying capitalism and installing themselves as socialist rulers by overwhelming the
system.Add it up and you’ve got the perfect Marxist scheme — all devised by
my Columbia University college classmate Barack Hussien Obamausing the Cloward and Piven Plan .
True per snopes!

entitlement addicts in the middle of a depression? Certainly not American taxpayers. But this has been Barack Hussien Obama’s plan all along.
His goal is to add two new Democrat senators, five Democrat congressman and a million loyal Democratic voters who are dependent on big government.
Legalize 12 million illegal Mexican immigrants.
Just giving these 12 million potential new citizens free health care alone could overwhelm the system and bankrupt America.
But it adds 12 million reliable new Democrat voters who can be counted
on to support big government. Add another few trillion dollars in welfare, aid to dependent children, food stamps, free medical, education, tax credits for the poor, and eventually Social Security .
Stimulus and bailouts. Where did all that money go? It went to Democrat contributors, organizations (ACORN), and unions — including billions of dollars to save or create jobs of government employees across the country. It went to save GM and Chrysler so that their employees could
keep paying union dues. It went to AIG so that Goldman Sachs could be bailed out (after giving Obama almost $1 million in contributions).
A staggering $125 billion went to teachers (thereby protecting their union dues).
All those public employees will vote loyally Democrat to protect their
bloated salaries and pensions that are bankrupting America.
The country goes broke, future generations face a bleak future, but Obama, the Democrat Party, government, and the unions grow more powerful. The ends justify the means.
Raise taxes on small business owners, high-income earners, and job
creators. Put the entire burden on only the top 20 percent of taxpayers,
redistribute the income, punish success, and reward those who did
nothing to deserve it (except vote for Obama). Reagan wanted to dramatically cut taxes in order to starve the government. Barack Obama wants to dramatically raise taxes to starve his political opposition. With the acts outlined above, Barack Hussien Obama and his regime have created a vast and rapidly expanding constituency of voters dependent on big government; a vast privileged class of public employees who work for big government; and a government dedicated to destroying capitalism and installing themselves as socialist rulers by overwhelming the
system.
Add it up and you’ve got the perfect Marxist scheme — all devised by
my Columbia University college classmate Barack Hussien Obama
using the Cloward and Piven Plan .

#38 Bob: My beautiful spousal unit, Mrs. Bonecrusher, in on meds because she needs them and they work. We have tried to get her off them and the results are not good; on the meds she is stable, relatively calm and generally at peace. The alternative is me not knowing whether I will come home to a loving kitten or need a whip and a chair. In our particular case, the meds are a life and marriage saver.

#38 bob, I can’t view the video now but if it’s about the drugging of kids, I’ll chime in. Years ago, we had a friend that wanted to put her boy on “Ritalin” because he was hyper active, so they said. I told my wife that, this was total BS, the boy was very smart and was mostly being a kid. They only had him on it for a couple of years and fortunately he turned out just fine. Later they put their younger daughter on it and she’s STILL on it. Later on she started getting in trouble with drugs and booze before she turned 16. She had a baby @ 16 and didn’t know which one of the three boys she hung out with fathered the child. Her mother is raising the little girl now and she’s a brat. She’s about 6 now. The daughter got pregnant again @ 18 but didn’t marry the kid that fathered the child. She did marry another guy and they moved out of state.
About 8-10 years ago, I read about a family that sued the company that made one of the drugs. It seems that the drug was used in institutions on the truly mentally ill. In court it came out that the drug companies were sending out information on the advantages of using it on so called Hyper Active kids, to the Psychiatric community and even school counselors. This has been going on for 30 years. SAD indeed. 🙁 -

Good morning Hamsters. Well it started off at 46 this morning at 6, and the windshift to the south continues warming things fast, 72 at noon. Steady breeze with some hefty gusts earlier has moderated a bit, though still too boisterous to water the yard and have most of it actually hit the ground where we want it.

– Are the teachers/counselors bound and gagged by the PC police thus rendered in-effective in their jobs – once again highly likely

#44 Bones, I’m glad they work well for your better half. Such was not my experience. The ex used all of the popular medications (Zoloft, Paxil, Ambien, Prozac, etc.) constantly during our last 10 years together. They didn’t help her, or our relationship. I suspect it was at least partially psychosomatic, but she experienced the “common side effects” of each and every med she was prescribed. Especially after she read the fine print included with the drug.
When she started insisting on medicating the daughters too, I threw in the towel and initiated our separation. One of the drugs that she was insisting that the girls needed was “black labeled” by the FDA 6 months later because of correlations to an increase in teen suicides.
I insisted that our decree include a clause requiring joint consent before any anti-depressants or psychotropics could be prescribed for our children. I was not completely unreasonable. When a psychologist told us that the best way to tell if your child really had ADHD was to try the meds and look for results, I said fine. But after observing no improvement, her mom still insisted that she take them anyway. Those pills were the first drugs daughter abused.
She later tried to end run the divorce decree by insisting the daughter needed inpatient treatment for eating disorders, despite the fact that a side effect of the ADHD stuff was suppressed appetite. That’s when I plunged eyeball deep in debt to win the custody suit. I still love the woman, but I could not stand by and allow her mental issues to harm the girls.
Sorry for the rant, and again, I’m glad that you and your spouse have had better luck with the meds than my ex did. Some folks do, a lot don’t.

Seems to me Mr. Jones provided a valuable service to our armed forces in Afghanistan. By getting “certain elements” all wound up and inciting “unrest”, he showed who in that general geography are the troublemakers. Once their identities are established, it would seem a fairly straightforward task to deal with them directly.Options at that point include (but certainly are not limited to):
1. Opening up a dialog with them, so we can better understand their motivations
2. Having an open and frank discussion of topics of mutual interest
3. Distribute pictures of them participating in some hot, forbidden porcine love
4. Disappearing them
5. Whacking them in their sleep and leaving the body there to be found later
6. Whacking them in broad daylight as an object lesson to others who might get similar ideas in their little turban-covered headsThere are others, but I’m sure people as intelligent as yourselves can come up with them on your own.

#51 SC: From the text of your linkie thingie, it appears to be more of an evolution of the relationship rather than a severing. They will continue to work together:
In the statement on Wednesday, Mr. Beck said he would be starting a “new phase” of a partnership with Roger Ailes, the chairman of Fox News. “I truly believe that America owes a lot to Roger Ailes and Fox News,” he said.
Mr. Ailes said in the statement, “Glenn Beck is a powerful communicator, a creative entrepreneur and a true success by anybody’s standards. I look forward to continuing to work with him.”

#54 Bob: A huge part of our success in this department is prayer, the other is that she really wants to be emotionally and psychologically healthy. I would suspect that a lot of people who are psychologically deficient actually like it that way as it can be empowering over others. This, of course, is evidence of deeper issues. It also tends to be evidence of a lack of faith and prayer. Having a loving and supportive spouse is immensely helpful as well.

The girls’ relationship with their mom has improved greatly since they both became adults, and so has mine. Today, they are both healthy, happy, well centered, and beautiful young adults. No, I’m not biased (not much, anyway.)

I reckon Jon Stewart will need to find a new source for his satire. Apparently the rumors were true.
FOX NEWS AND MERCURY RADIO ARTS ANNOUNCE NEW AGREEMENT
(New York, NY) Fox News and Mercury Radio Arts, Glenn Beck’s production company, are proud to announce that they will work together to develop and produce a variety of television projects for air on the Fox News Channel as well as content for other platforms including Fox News’ digital properties. Glenn intends to transition off of his daily program, the third highest rated in all of cable news, later this year.Maybe Beck will toss his hat into the ring for the 2012 presidential race. He’d fit in well with most of the crowd there. 😉

We just rented our vacant warehouse w/living quarters. The new tenant is something else. He has/is/involved/does:
– a fireman. Would still be except “I’m a white male”. He was ready to make a career, but obviously there were issues
– a shooting expert – he trains and retrains police officers to improve their shooting. (He showed me his CDL, which means I just saved money on his background check)
– does IT work. We discussed the pros/cons of different systems as he took measurements of the unit.
– owns two fire trucks. (One reason he needs a warehouse)
– welds
– started up an energy company. Guess who he’ll be buying his power from?
– knows real estate law, as he used to deal in real estateI don’t know what all else he does or how many toys he actually has. He ought to be a real interesting tenant. Nice guy. Probably in his forties. He had no problem writing us a check.
I like that last part best of all.

plus my sexuality class tonight at church.
Here it is in a nutshell:
Most men want sex almost all the time, most wimmins don’t. Men put up with love and/or marriage to get sex and wimmins put with sex to get love and/or marriage. Those couples who are serious about the whole relationship thing understand this and work together so both sides are accommodated. Sometimes it takes a while to get the wimmins trained to bring beer and sammiches promptly but eventually it will happen. -

The War in Afghanistan began on October 7, 2001, today is Wednesday, April 6, 2001 and “we” are still trying to win the hearts and minds of the people. So tell me Serge’ the Oracle, when do we start fighting to win the war?
Oh I forgot to win the hearts and minds of the people Generals have to go to some goofy pastor’s church and try to get him to shut up and Lindsey Graham wants to add restrictions to our 1st amendment. And Serge’ the The Oracle, The Pious agrees. I mean the muslims might get mad if we live our life as the founders of this country intended.
Looks like “they are winng the war”.
It is time we left Afghanistan. If we are not going to do what needs to be done in that country to remove the threat, then I want us out of Afghanistan. If our generals are so afraid of the bad guys that they believe that shutting up some podunk paster is the best course of action, then I want my soldiers home.

This is pretty cool. I keep it going in the background, and can here the hum when Phoebe returns to the nest to feed the chicks.
Phoebe is a Channel Island Allen (S.s. sedentarius) hummingbird in Orange County, California. She has been laying 4 to 5 clutches each year for several years and I’ve been broadcasting her nest since 2007.
My feeders are up, but are not often visited yet. With all the cats around here, I doubt if any hummers would build a nest, but they’re still fun to watch. Sometimes I think they get a kick out of teasing the cats.

No need for apologies on that. Sometimes you need to illustrate absurdity with more absurdity.
BTW, Mark Steyn nailed Graham to the wall on this topic. Then Graham “responded” to the nailing and the commenters pretty well destroyed what shreds of Graham were left after Steyn was through with him.

‘He’s absoluetly despondent over the fear of prison.
‘Over the last year, he’s lost about 20lb and friends are concerned that he’s escaping reality with booze.
‘In early March, his legal team told him there was a strong chance he could be indicted, and John completely lost it.
‘He cried his eyes out and said, “I won’t go to jail. I’d kill myself first!”Well Boo-Hoo-Hoo. He screws around on his wife, WHO HAD CANCER, with a horse faced slut and now he’s worried about going to jail,…poor baby.

You using a Wang to develop your presentation materials?
Tonight at RCIA, we’re doing Baptism & Confirmation with our Pastor. He’s a really good speaker – he hardly ever uses notes when delivering his homilies. We figured it’d be a good time to schedule it because about 30 or 40 of the students (the Elect) are gonna receive those sacraments in a couple weeks.

Thanks for the links. Here is my bottom line feeling on the whole issue. The muslims loathe the fact we live, period end of story. If our CIC and Commanders do not think they can keep us safe or their troops reasonably safe in an area where we have so much invested in “winning their minds and hearts” THEN GET OUT AND COME HOME.
If I am going to die for living and practicing the freedoms and liberties fought and died for then let me die standing and not on my knees cowering before the enemy.

I think I’ll just post the links from now on, those who are interested can read them, those who aren’t don’t have to.

You brought this drubbing onto yourself Sarge. If your little ego gets bruised because someone disagrees with you then I would suggest you limit your discussions to Barney books or maybe Clifford the Big Red dog.
I did not ramp this up to this personal level till you decided to tell folks that people that disagree with you are sick and have no compassion. No you did not mention names but it was obvious who you were talking about. You wanna set yourself up as the authority, you best be prepared for someone like me to pull your sheets.
You need to get some thicker skin, grow a pair and man up or get out.
My conscience is clear.

Bob –
At our Parish Center, there’s a small parlor with windows that used to have a small tree right next to the window. A pair of doves made their nest there, and we could watch them raise their babies. They never came back. It was rather cool to see them grow.

Yeah, we’re already on our second round of dove squabs and it’s only April. I very rarely here the soothing sound of a mourning dove anymore. They seem to have been driven out of the area almost completely by the more raucous and somewhat annoying noisy white wing.

When the commander of troops tells you that soldiersm will die if you burn a book, and then you go ahead and burn the book, you’re just as much at fault as them that did the killing.
Holding someone who burns a book just as much at fault for a murder as the actual murderer because he exercised his rights guaranteed him by The US Constitution is a subversion of the very principles this nation once stood for. Play semantics with this all you want. I’m done now too.

I have Inca and Mourning Doves here around my house. They are just a joy to watch. I start my day watching them off the front porch. LOL I wish we had grackles and mockingbirds but don’t. Grackles just crack me up unless they defile my truck in a Walmart parking lot then I hate em.
Strange thing this year with the birds though. We had a group of Gold finches hang around for a week and then they boogied. I usually see them for a month or so before they move along. Guess they did not care for this years feed. I place thistle for them but they devastate my other feeders first.

I think my favorite bird of all is the little Carolina/house wrens that make nest in every nook and cranny they can find. They are fun to watch bouncing around. My wife and I have nick named them L.B. Roosters. That is Little Bird Roosters. They are better than any alarm clock I could buy for waking me in the morning.

Let me weigh in on dove species: we have mourning, white wing, a few aztec this year (had not seen any the previous 3-4 years), and I am hoping to see a collared dove (non-native) again this year. We had one in the neighborhood last year and I would see it around in various places, usually flying or perched by itself, except when I put out mixed seeds on the patio, it would then sometimes be seen among the other doves.
And lots of “pigeons” — more properly, rock doves.

I have seen one pigeon in all the years I have lived here. He was a friendly cuss. Hung around for a few hours visited like he owned this place, took off. I guess he told the others this place lacked in basic pigeon amenities.

I like the chimney swifts (often incorrectly called chimney sweep) which build mud nests under the eaves. My love for them has to do with their extraordinary flying agility. They are like a fighter jet screaming by close to ground….unlike the purple martins, which fly like a harrier.
Worst flier?
Probably the bluejay. I’m always expecting him to just sputter face first into the ground. What a dork. -

Yeah, doves are very awkward on landing. There are chimney swifts at my next-door neighbor’s house, but I can’t tell for sure if they are flying out of the chimney or not. It looks to me like they are. Neither they nor we ever use our fireplaces so birds could certainly nest in there. In fact, we have in several springs heard baby bird chittering coming from up inside the fireplace somewhere.

‘collared dove’ I think that is a ringed neck turtle dove. They are an import that, much like Quaker Parakeets, froze to death during winter. They too have since adapted. Even the hunting regulations list them (doves) now. As a non-native species there are exclusions for bagging them. I remember Christmas shopping with Dad at downtown department stores. They had turtle doves in tall cages. I guess they added to the festive spirit. They just let the birds fly away as expendable seasonal ornaments after Christmas. We caught one that was too cold to escape once. ‘Coo Bird’ lived for ten years or so as I recall.
White wing doves. I have been shooting doves whenever I can for a while. They are delicious and bacon is involved for fans of that. White wing doves were very rare this far north ten years ago. I lived in the Valley in ’94-96. Jokes about shooting illegals flying across the river had to be carefully told. Usually about two weeks into the season the rains started and the white wings went south. Last week there must have been 60+ in the neighbor’s tree. Bet we will still have to buy the stamp to shoot them no matter how numerous they are.

Bones, that would be like eating Bambi. I feed them, they don’t feed me.
I am engaged in an email thread tonight with my next-door neighbor (on the other side, not the family with the chimney swifts) regarding hawks in our yards. He thinks the bird seed I put down — attracting a gazillion kinds of birds but volume-wise mostly pigeons — causes red-shouldered hawks to hunt in my yard. I’ve seen the hawks but haven’t seen them after any birds. Cooper’s hawk, different story, has taken birds on my patio.
Neighbor thinks piles of loose feathers he has seen are hawk leavings. I think they are from predation by loose cats brought in by a mentally ill woman on our block.

#137 M: Once you have bambi burgers you never go back – they are yummy!
I used to feed the birds but got tired of the poop. On occasion I would put the seed near some bushes for a kitty ambush but never got to witness one. If you consistently feed the little birdies the predators will come by. I think Disney in Fla had a problem with that some years ago. They would release lots of white doves at the same time every evening and the local hawks figgered it out and hung around for “show time”. -

Survived another sexuality class. My bouncers said that the students were actually listening, and I agree. There were a couple of tough girls that seemed to be blowing off the class, but one of them was actually taking a lot of notes. It was weird that her gal friend threw away her notes at the end of class. I guess the “crab in the bucket” syndrome was kicking in.
Miss Bag of Chips and her boyfriend actually seemed to be listening. Miss BoC not as intently, but I saw him leaning back in his chair (away from her) and paying attention. She would listen for a while and then put her head down on the table.
I asked the class at the end if any of them were actually going to at least consider holding off sex until marriage. Four of them were brave enough to raise their hands. My bouncer said he wished that he had seen my presentation when he was a teenager. I had confiscated a note during class, which had a lot of Spanish in it, and he (the bouncer) was trying to read it. Unfortunately, his heritage is Puerto Rican, and some of the words were probably teen slang. He was able to make out something about “telling your mother” about sex. It seems that the girl might have been thinking about talking to her mother or her friend’s mother about a sexual relationship. That’s a first step, anyway.
I’m glad it’s over. My brain feels a little run over about now. It was a lot of information to share in the time I had.

Squawkster, I don’t disapprove of hunting, but it is not my cup of tea.
I just realized I said “aztec” dove when what i meant was inca. I think that’s what I meant. Long day at the office. I feel like an office puppet, my strings are still jangling. Nightall.
