The news out of Japan just keeps getting worse. One reactor may have partially melted down and another has suffered a dramatic explosion at the Fukushima plant. More and more photos are becoming available showing the extent of the physical damage (click on the picture for more):
The human tragedy is still unfolding. Thousands of bodies are washing ashore, overwhelming those responsible for the rescue and recovery efforts. Thousands are stranded, waiting for assistance, delayed by infrastructure damage.
We should all offer our prayers.

Yes indeed. That and any money you can spare.

Prayers been sent, and so has money.
What I’ve reflected on while watching this is the power displayed. A wave swept across the largest expanse of water on this planet at the speed of a jet aircraft— some 6000 miles—and destroyed boats in harbor on the western shore of this nation. A 30 foot high wall of water swept away the works of man on the shores of Japan. The earth continues to shale in the region.
God created the mechanisms involved, which means He is even more powerful than that.

#3 If you watch at about the 34-38 second mark you see vehicles driving on the street just as the water spills over. Probably didn’t end well for them.

There are some other videos on the right-hand side of the page. Toward the middle/end as the flood is spreading across what looks like farmland, you can see a couple of cars turn around and at least try to get out of the path. -

One other reflection I made about the disasters in Japan.
We have a Rainy Day Fund in this State that is designed to be used in situations such as this. While Texas is not likley to face an earthquake followed by a tsunami followed by a nuclear catastrophe followed by a volcanic eruption, it is easy to imagine a force 5 hurricane following a track up the Houston Ship Channel or making a direct hit on Corpus Christi bay. In fact, its not inconceivable that both events, or two others much like them, could occur in the same season.
Right now, we have Establishment Republicans talking about raiding that fund to avoid making the hard decisions that Conservatives and Tea Partiers are telling them they need to make.

Meanwhile, bedwetters in Germany are schvitzing over nuclear power in their country. I’m pretty sure they don’t have any need to worry about earthquakes and tsunami. Also, typical of the Greenies, they don’t really say where they intend to get the electricity that allows them to stay up all night reading Marx and drawing protest signs, or where they plan to get the gas to put in their Trabants to get to the protests.

Fourteen Point Plan to Cut Spending to Balance the State Budget: Across-the-board
cuts do not get to the root of the over-spending, over-regulating problem. Cutting 2.5%, 5%
or 10% of a department, agency, or program that is outside basic constitutional authority
does not go far enough to solve the spending problem. It is time to get state government
spending under control by:1) focusing on the basic constitutional duties of state government, making those the top
budget priorities;2) employing zero-based budgeting for every agency, department, and program;
3) asserting constitutional and moral duty to first protect and preserve the interests of the
citizens and legal residents of Texas by requiring all public service providers to verify and
report the citizenship/legal residency of those they serve to the State and to the People
of Texas, thereby ensuring appropriate budget allocations can be made for legal Texas
residents, versus those from other States (both foreign and domestic);4) eliminating overlapping, duplicated agencies, departments, and programs (example,
the natural resource agencies: Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Rail Road
Commission, Public Utility Commission, General Land Office, Agriculture Commission,
Parks & Wildlife);5) injecting competition into the delivery of services for improved service quality and lower
costs (outsourcing, improved centralized procurement for volume purchasing discounts, and
efficient contract management);6) determining feasibility of purchase deferrals for all unspent appropriations in current
budget and for new budget requests for capital assets (vehicles, equipment, technology,
new facilities/upgrades/remodels);7) instituting an immediate hiring freeze and review of all state government positions, all
personnel policies, and all benefits; review solvency of benefit funding for state employees;
end longevity pay for state employees; increase contribution levels for state employees
toward their own pension and insurance benefits;8) cutting pay for state employees, including statewide officials. Top officials should lead by
cutting their pay first. (No public employee should make more than the Governor, including
school superintendents.) Care should be taken not to reduce lowest paid state workers to
the point of making them eligible for social services, thereby driving up state costs.9) ending the practice of diverting funds from the originally-intended purpose to other uses
(for example, the state motor fuels tax of which 47% is diverted to non-transportation fund use);10) mandating review of all agencies, departments, and programs to match funding with
originally-intended mission and to determine whether or not the agency/department/
program is producing measurable results; although this is the purpose of the Sunset
Commission, the Sunset Commission needs to be revamped with more private citizen
representation on the review board;11) reviewing state debt for savings through debt consolidation, lower interest rates;
12) suspending funding of parks, bike and walking trails, renovations of historical properties;
13) reviewing and curtailing in many cases state economic incentives and subsidies (our
low taxes, limited regulations, right to work laws, and civil justice system provide plenty of
incentives for companies to come to Texas, when compared to other states);14) reasserting State Sovereignty under the 10th Amendment of the US Constitution. Too
much state spending is driven by accepting unconstitutional federal funding with strings,
regulation, and mandates. All federal funds that come with added strings and regulation
should be rejected. The problem with having taxpayer money in the bank is that cowardly politicians see it as a quick fix to a near term problem rather than facing the long term issues, or the unintended consquences of their politically expedient decisions.

I saw that footage last night. I had to watch it twice just to wrap my head around the massive amounts of water involved and the power that wave generated.
It wasn’t just one wave 20 feet high (or whatever the measurement was). It was 20 feet high and 3 miles wide.
That’s a lot of power.
My heart goes out to the Japanese people, both there and those here who are wondering if loved ones are alive, or will ever be found. This will be a long and protracted recovery, but if anyone can do it, the Japanese can. Look at what they’ve done with Hiroshima. I admire their people and their culture. Did you see the polite lines queuing up for water and supplies? Even in the face of disaster, they remain cooperative and supportive of each other, not like the mobs I’ve seen elsewhere.
I pray for them all.

I saw the other day where the earthquake moved Japan over 8 feet. Wonder what that means for the eastern edge of the Pacific Plate. (San Francisco, Los Angeles, et al) I’mnot a geophysicist, nor have I played one on TV, but it seems like that could make the left coast in a possible situation for “the big one”.Quake moved Japan by 8 feet: USGS
Washington, Mar 13, (AFP) :Japan’s recent massive earthquake, one of the largest ever recorded, appears to have moved the island by about eight feet, the US Geological Survey has said.
“That’s a reasonable number,” USGS seismologist Paul Earle told AFP. “Eight feet, that’s certainly going to be in the ballpark.”
Friday’s 8.9 magnitude quake unleashed a terrifying tsunami that engulfed towns and cities on Japan’s northeastern coast, destroying everything in its path in what Prime Minister Naoto Kan said was an “unprecedented national disaster.”
The quake and its tectonic shift resulted from “thrust faulting” along the boundary of the Pacific and North America plates, according to the USGS.
The Pacific plate pushes under a far western wedge of the North America plate at the rate of about 3.3 inches per year, but a colossal earthquake can provide enough of a jolt to dramatically move the plates, with catastrophic consequences.
“With an earthquake this large, you can get these huge ground shifts,” Earle said. “On the actual fault you can get 65 feet of relative movement, on the two sides of the fault.”
He said similar movements would have been seen for Chile and Indonesia.

On a lighter note, I used to use the old quote
“Nature states you must grow old, but there is no natural law that states you must grow up.”
I read this one this morning, think I’ll start using it instead.
“There comes a time in life when you walk away from all the drama and people who create it. Surround yourself with people who make you laugh, forget the bad and focus on the good. Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don’t. Life is too short to be anything but happy. Falling down is part of LIFE. Getting back up is living.” — Anonymous

I believe the same report said that the earth’s axis had been shifted 4 inches as well.
Mapmakers will be very busy. I wonder how this has affected ocean currents around the island? Will it portend changes in the island’s contours later?
I just have a hard time comprehending the magnitude of the event.

Monday morning musings: “Just 17% Believe American Muslims Are Treated Unfairly”
While reading this article, I came across the Rasmussen categories “Political Class” and “Mainstream Americans”. The Political Class seems fuzzy to me but the concept really irritates some liberal bloggers I came across while searching for its definition — so I think it’s a good thing. The way these groups are determined is explained in:
“The American people don’t want to be governed from the left, the right or the center. The American people want to govern themselves,” says Scott Rasmussen, president of Rasmussen Reports.

Because these are civilized people behaving in a civilized manner. Not like the Katrina aftermath.

Right now, we have Establishment Republicans talking about raiding that fund to avoid making the hard decisions that Conservatives and Tea Partiers are telling them they need to make.
I would suggest that all of us Hamsters email our state Lege’s. and Sen’s. and remind them that Nov. 2010 was all about getting us back fiscal responsibility and remind them it can happen again.
P.S. Also tell all of your friends and neighbors.

I don’t think the east and west edges are connected as in a solid piece — they are separated by the Pacific’s mid-ocean ridge.

In 1923 there was a similar event in Japan. The earthquake leveled Tokyo. To make matters worse there was a typhoon approaching. The winds created massive firestorms that in one case incinerated almost 40,000 people gathered in Tokyo. Many believe that the utter devastation from the earthquake, tsunami, typhoon, and firestorms, and the subsequent declaration of martial law set the stage for the militarization of Japan and their entrance into WWII.

No, the Hawaiian Ridge is just a “tear” in the Pacific Plate and dead ends at the islands. The Pacific Plate is continuous.

You might note that the press release in the link is from the Tea Party Advisory Committee, whcih means that there is an even more powerful tool available to us, and that is to voice that support through local Tea Parties so that we can show that we not only have the numbers, but we’re organized as well—which makes a difference during Primaries. The suggestions made are concrete and would work if given half a chance. They represent statements of Principal that should guide our representastives. But Establishment Republicans, unwilling to make the hard choices and to give us the Leadership required, have been criticizing the suggestions made because they are not “specific” enough or do not include hard numbers of amounts saved. Its a direct assault on the Tea Party leaders involved and the elected representatives who not only support them, but invited thier participation in the process.
What is going on here on the Establishment side is a complete abrogation of responsibility. Those elected officials told us they could do the job when they ran for office. Now they say they can’t do it because we can’t provide them with exact numbers. EXACT FRIGGIN NUMBERS IS THIER FRIGGIN JOB. If they are unwilling or unable to do that work, then we don’t need them and should get some folks in there willing to do the work required. They should do the math, tell us how much is going to be saved, and if its not enough, come up with even more ways to cut spending and regulation.
But the truth of the matter is that they don’t really want to because to do so diminishes thier power and increases that of us ignent peasants. The more tax payer dollars they control, the more power they have, so saving too much will put power back in the hands of people they think are too stupid to understand how to use it. Their excuse will be that we “just don’t get it” and need thier help to get to a place where we “understand” the problem. Some folks will be fooled by this, but the reality is that its those Establishment clowns that don’t get it:
The People are the ones who are supposed to be running things. Thier job is not to get us to understand, thier job is to understand what we’re telling them.

Also where do you take the loot and how do you get it there? Seems to me there would a big logistics problem (for looters) involved due to the level of devastation.Damocles
If you lived in a non devastated location you’d take it there, probably in some sort of car. -

I saw that story also. Don’t know as I like glorifying killing anyone, but if anyone deserves a quick kill shot, it’s Taliban who oppress their countrymen and killing anyone who disagrees with them, without remorse. -

I was trying to figure out why no one was blaming this on global warming, then I remembered where we are, who the players are, what time of the election cycle it is, and it all began to make sense. Remember that weather machine that Karl Rove had that he and President Bush used to make Hurricane Shelia Jackson Lee demolish NOLA? Well, how do you top that? The current occupant of the White House and chief leader of the thugocracy, couldn’t stand to be outdone by the old Bush administration in any respect. I have it on good authority that this earthquake, tsunami, volcano eruption, nuclear meltdown scenario is merely a demonstration of what could happen here if The One is not reelected. His weather machine is capable of things to the power of 10 beyond anything Karl Rove could even imagine, plus he is hard hearted enough to use it more than once. Just remember, you read it here first when it finally starts showing up on the Fox shows.

Just as a side note, human interest story. A coworker of mine told me Friday she was concerned because her parents in law were in Japan. I asked her this morning if they had been heard from as they were supposed to be traveling by train. They were between trains when the quake hit and were totally unaware of the devastion to the north. A local Japanese man drove them an hour and a half to the airport where they caught a flight back to the US. They were still unaware of what had been going on and showing pictures of books that had fallen off shelves and the like. The kids, who had been worried sick, told them to turn on the darn tv. Reality hit them hard them and they understood why the kids were upset they hadn’t called or been in touch.
A local story with a happy ending.

#35 Darren: I saw that one on Drudge as well, but you beat me to the punch. The article is really a great read, if you are into that kind of thing. From the article:
Most of the kills were at a range of 1,200 metres using the 7.62 mm L96 sniper rifle.
The snipers used suppressors, reducing the sound of the muzzle blast. Although a ballistic crack could be heard, it was almost impossible to work out where the shot was coming from. With the bullet travelling at three times the speed of sound, a victim was unlikely to hear anything before he died. The 7.62 is the same, I believe, as the .308 winchester round.
Within 40 days, the two marksmen from 4 Rifles, part of the Welsh Guards Battle group, had achieved 75 confirmed kills with 31 attributed to Potter and 44 to Osmond. Each kill was chalked up as a little stick man on the beam above the firing position in their camouflaged sangar beside the base gate – a stick man with no head denoting a target eliminated with a shot to the skull.

Satellite photos show devastation in Japan.
You can scroll back and forth to see the before and after shots. Notice all the low land that was reclaimed by the Japanese only to have the sea reclaim it. A lot of it is under water now. 🙁 -

Fire on the Altar

Torah : Leviticus 6:8-8:36
Haftarah : Jeremiah 7:21-8:3; 9:22-23
Gospel : Mark 7:31-8:38Thought for the Week
A religious life without faith is like offering a sacrifice on a cold altar. There is no means to elevate it to Heaven. It simply lies lifeless and cold, a noble effort but ultimately earthbound.
Commentary
“The fire on the altar shall be kept burning on it. It shall not go out, but the priest shall burn wood on it every morning; and he shall lay out the burnt off.” (Leviticus 6:12)
The fire upon the altar was to be kept burning continuously. As we will see in next week’s reading, the altar fire was ignited by the presence of God. This sacred fire was never to be extinguished. “The fire on the altar is to be kept burning on it…the fire shall be kept burning continually on the altar; it is not to go out.” (Leviticus 6:12) Fire brought from some other source than the altar fire lit by God is referred to as “strange fire.” (Leviticus 10:1)We can understand the mitzvah to keep the altar aflame homiletically. The pyre on the altar is the medium which transcends this world. Whatever is consumed by that fire is elevated to Heaven in heat, smoke and energy. It is the altar flame which lifts the sacrifice to God.
In this sense, the flames of the altar can be likened to the flames of faith in Messiah. It is only by that faith that our lives and actions transcend the mundane world and can be lifted up to the plane of the Heavenly. A religious life without faith is like offering a sacrifice on a cold altar. There is no means to elevate it to Heaven.
It simply lies lifeless and cold, a noble effort but ultimately earthbound. Any mitzvah might be measured the same way. For example, the mitzvah of keeping the Sabbath is worthy and noble, but if it is done as a rote matter of course, without faith in Messiah, it is merely a day off from the week. However, when we combine the mitzvah with faith in Messiah, a circuit between Heaven and Earth is closed. Our mitzvah is immediately elevated to a level of holiness and righteousness. It is regarded as if Yeshua Himself has performed the mitzvah through us, as indeed He has.
We learn from this that true faith is kindled within us by God Himself. We cannot fake faith. To do so would be to offer ‘strange fire.’ True faith is kindled by God, but it is our responsibility to feed and nurture that faith. We are to tend the altar. We are to stoke the flames. We are to remove the ashes, and we are to offer the fresh sacrifice of our willing obedience continually, daily upon it.
Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams. (1 Samuel 15:22)

Economists typically value the opportunity cost of a person’s time at his or her wage rate. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the average American’s hourly wage was $17.57 in September 2007. Assuming that it takes everyone 10 minutes to move all of their clocks and watches forward or backward by an hour, the opportunity cost of doing so works out to $2.93 per person. Multiplying that number by the total U.S. population (excluding Arizona) yields a one-time opportunity cost for the nation of just under $860 million—or, to be more precise, $858,274,802. Since clocks must be changed twice every year, this back-of-the-envelope calculation must be doubled, to approximately $1.7 billion annually.”

This is a funny political ad from Canada.
The voice over was done by one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. He was the drummer for our garage band in high school, and helped me get started in radio. I recently tracked him down on facebook to thank him.
He and his wife were a successful morning drive time team in several markets. Now he’s retired, and does voice over work whenever he feels like it, and she writes children’s books. -

I don’t pay much mind to comment ratings. They seem to be frequently irrational. For example, I think it’s very odd that someone found reason to dislike my “happy pi day” comment. But, folks will be folks.

I’ve been reading a series of three informative posts by Evelyn at Skepchick. They give an easy to understand description of the type of reactors that are in Japan, their issues, and the efforts to keep them safely contained.
The plants at Fukushima are so called Boiling Water Reactors, or BWR for short. Boiling Water Reactors are similar to a pressure cooker. The nuclear fuel heats water, the water boils and creates steam, the steam then drives turbines that create the electricity, and the steam is then cooled and condensed back to water, and the water send back to be heated by the nuclear fuel. The pressure cooker operates at about 250 °C.
The nuclear fuel is uranium oxide. Uranium oxide is a ceramic with a very high melting point of about 3000 °C. The fuel is manufactured in pellets (think little cylinders the size of Lego bricks). Those pieces are then put into a long tube made of Zircaloy with a melting point of 2200 °C, and sealed tight. The assembly is called a fuel rod. These fuel rods are then put together to form larger packages, and a number of these packages are then put into the reactor. All these packages together are referred to as “the core”.Hysteria is not necessary. Don’t panic! (And remember to bring a towel.)

if one looks at the map of where Sendai is located, please note that it is indented (concave) to the line of the coast. This geographical feature would tend to focus the energy of the tsunami as opposed to deflecting it as a convex feature would. If you look closely at the 2nd linkie thingie above, you will see that the quake was somewhat north of dead center of the bay area. It is hard to imagine a worse outcome, but if the quake were centered in front of the bay the damage would have been even worse.

I initially thought that only registered users could rate comments. Turns out that feature is only available on the pro version of the plugin and I don’t think that’s an important enough feature to buy it. So you’ll just have to live with the knowledge there may be a few lurking slugs that don’t like you no matter what you say. Based on who is getting “disliked”, even for the most benign of comments, I’ve got a pretty good idea who the sluglurker is. I wouldn’t lose too much sleep over it.

That’s nothing
Still shaking my head. I am fine with everyone making their cornbread and chili (good combination, BTW) to their own preference.

Ten recipes for cornbread. Four for chili, none with beans. There is a recipe for armadillo that uses beans. Also has the real King Ranch Casserole recipe.

Recipes… I don’t wanna, I don’t haveta, I’m (almost) retired. Get my cornbread at a grocery with a good in-house bakery. Quite content to get my chili out of a can. I’m partial to Wolf brand Texas Style Hot. My oven hasn’t been on since Christmas Day.
Once upon a time, I baked my own bread (including before I had a bread machine) and cultured my own yogurt. Then later on, I cooked up a storm once a week to have enough chow for a week’s worth of meals, in spite of working 50-60 hrs a week. Now I don’t cook. Like I said, I dont haveta.

“get my chili out of a can.”
That is, without doubt, the most vile, heinous, blasphemous, comment ever posted. Are you from Jersey or some other alien land? All real food has Trappey’s jalapenos added at some point or at least the chance to do so. Can?? gadzookes.
/shudders at the horror

You are correct, bob.
(as I grab my chest in horror)
There’s nothIng quite like pouring the batter into that pre-heated greasy skillet, knowing you’ve done all you can to insure that perfect, dry crust on the bottom and edges, watching the batter pop just as it’s pour in……ahhhhhhhh -

It’s Okay, mharpie.
Even a chili snob like me enjoys a can of Wolf brand every once in a while.
Reminds me of Mom, who thought chili was invented by Wolf. -

Bob’s Red Mill brand of stuff has the only real yellow grits I can find. Which is a pain because that means a trip to Harold E. Butts. I hate that place. The layout defies any sense of logic. If you can find the Red Mill display try that in cornbread. It tastes great They also have a naturally blue coarse ground corn meal. Tastes great as well but the blue colour takes some by surprise. Use no white flour and an extra egg to compensate. Bacon grease and cast iron skillet are a given, didn’t think that needed a mention.

I haven’t seen yellow grits in any grocery store here. Whenever I go back to Florida I always pick up a few bags of Dixie Lily yellow grits to bring home. Canino’s has some good stone ground yellow corn meal. I fry my cornbread. In lard. With cracklings mixed in. Hmm. I think I’ll mix up a pan to go with my leftover pot roast.

#113 Hamous (and eggs, with a side of grits) I too have noticed a lack of yellow grits lately. They were readily available 10 or so years ago, and I’d very much like to send some to my friend from Philly for his birthday in April. Apparently up thar, there ain’t no grits at all.
If you run across a connection for the yellow stuff, please turn me on to it. I’ve sent him a few boxes of white over the years, but I’m sure he’d enjoy the real deal.

And here’s something I hope we can all agree is worthy of a hanging. I got a rope.

“The larger kid on the right [being bullied], is my son’s friend Casey – thankfully they don’t go to the same school. Poor Casey has been bullied his whole high school life, and this is what happens when he snaps!! But guess who was suspended in this scenario – Casey!!

These stories about buying food online and sending to folks recalls a rather horrible story I heard this winter when a colleague from Beijing spent 2 weeks in Houston for some training. She mentioned shopping for family as time neared for her return. When I asked what she had bought to take back, the really sad item was powdered milk for her 2-year-old son. Powdered milk is sold in China but no one trusts it not to be contaminated with plastic resin or who knows what. They can order it from the US but shipping it is expensive.

Go to National Review Online and search “Happy Pi Day”. I think either Wagonburner or Shannon wrote the script.

Animal lover that I am, I appreciated Drudge’s link to the story of the 2 pet dogs that survived the tsunami.
I have been quite surprised to see the number of news shots showing survivors holding small fluffy dogs. I had no idea pets had become popular in Japan.
Night all.

Me too. Only my curiosity wondered if the Japanese ate dogs; or was that just the Chinese and Koreans? I’m glad the pooches are doing well and I hope and pray that the people are doing better.

Why Are the Libertarians Silent About Radical Islam?
Good question. Answers anyone?
Noticeably absent from the debate is America’s libertarian movement.
Cato, Reason, the Libertarian Party, the Ron Paulists, have all kept largely silent on King’s hearings.
[List of bad things Islamists do and intruduce the right and left libertarian groups]
(snip)
Thus the silence on the subject of Radical Islam among left-libertarians.
