Weekend “Last Freeze” Open Comments

I hear that we’ve had our last freeze – for a while, anyway.  I uncovered my garden this morning, and I’m afraid my lettuce may not have made it through this last cold snap.  My thoughts now turn to starting some new victims seeds for the upcoming spring garden.
I also need to do some housecleaning.  We do, after all, have a graduation/engagement party coming up.  Spring cleaning was due, anyway.  It is a gargantuan task, in a house this large, so I guess I must begin now.  Maybe if I tackle it a little at a time…but then, little time is all I have!  I still have to manage our business, my family, and performed my daily chores.  I need to start sleeping better, so I’ll have more energy.  Perhaps the right music to get me moving?  Nova Menco has always been great housecleaning music for me.
How are you preparing for the upcoming spring? Making plans for the summer?
The couch is now cleared off for company.  (One item off my list….)

Is your house finished? Construction, I mean, I seem to remember you talking about it being an ongoing project. Oh and a graduation and wedding on the way. YES! Good luck. 😉

One more queston, is your under floor heating gas fired, does it have a boiler? I’ve heard you say that you turn it off and on does it have a thermostat? I don’t know how common these things are in the south but them sure seem like a good idea. I see them often on “This Old House” up in the frozen north.

Our living room ceiling is approximately 28-30 feet high. No amount of forced hot air would work in this space. Our floor is concrete, with a stone pattern rolled into it, and I stained it a dark gray. (It took my sinuses three days to recover from that process!) Many people think it is real stone. Before we poured the concrete (a special mix designed to work with the roller), we attached PEX tubing to the wire frame. We have a boiler that is big enough to manage our potable and heating needs. Hubby is very please with his plumbing. Every zone has its own circulating pump. I believe we even have the front and back verandas plumbed for heat, but I don’t think we have them hooked up.

It really doesn’t take that long for the heat to be felt. The thermal mass of the concrete collects the heat and releases it gradually. During the last freezes we left the boiler running all night. If the days were cold enough, we left it on during the day as well. With the boiler running constantly lately, the floor actually feels warm, especially in certain places where tubing loops come close together. You can usually find the cat sitting in those spots. Our house is extremely well insulated. The dome came with R38 or R39 foam pre-installed, and the walls are 6″ deep because of the design of the dome, so we have a few extra inches of insulation than most houses. This means that on most days I can leave the heat off during the day, run it for 3-5 hours at night, then turn the boiler off for the night time and still be comfortable. There are hookups for thermostats, but they have not been connected yet, so our heat is done “by feel”. Actually, using thermostats with radiant heat is different, since the air temp can by 68 degrees yet humans still feel comfortable – because the heat is being radiated onto our bodies instead of going to heat the air. Think of sitting outside in the sunshine on a moderate spring day. The air may be cool, but if you are sitting in the sun, you feel warm. Same principle.

Hopefully, some day, we’ll get the upstairs finished. Right now it’s just subfloor. We need to run tubing and sleepers before we can put down the finished floor. It’s a lot of work and takes time. And money. When we do finally get it hooked up, we’ll be able to cook this house in no time flat.

Good morning all. Thick frost on everything and 24 at 6. Sunrise was most welcome, and his magic has already warmed us to 39 at 9 as he continues to sublimate the frost directly to his beckoning fingers. Today the potted plants can emerge from their sanctuary in the garage. They’ve been there for 12 days and have survived nicely but now need his direct light and warmth. The stalwart pansies revive yet again at his touch, so all is not desolation in the flowerbeds.

The squirrels and birds are out and about in a victory celebration. Of the 12 days thus far this month out here on the exposed land on the north bank of the Brazos at Richmond, only three saw Sunrise above freezing, and on two of those temps fell precipitously before the ravaging Arctic winds as fronts roared through, passing below 32 without hesitation. We can use a thaw. Thank you, Lord.

Well, I received my “Care Package” on Thursday, 40 rounds of .348 Winchester. Man ammo was hard to find, but The Old Western Scrounger came through. He only had 5 boxes in stock and @ $50 bucks a box I only bought 2. With 40 rounds of brass, I probably will never buy any more ammo since I’m not planning to shoot the.348 that much. I’ll purchase some RCBS dies and roll my own.
The rifle has a bead sight which I’ve always liked BUTT my eyes aren’t as young as they used to be so I’m thinking about getting a William Malcolm Rifle Scope if I can figger how to mount it high enough to clear the ejection port. 😉

With the mid east in turmoil, big sis told Congress the U.S. faces a terror threat. She said she tightened airport security to keep terrorists out of the country.

If they want to come to the United States they’ll have to fly to Mexico and walk across like everybody else.

Rifle discharges, fatally injuring veteran Eugene police officer at private shooting range

A veteran Eugene police officer fatally shot himself at a private shooting range Friday, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Sgt. Jerry Webber, 44, of Eugene was removing a hunting rifle from the back of his vehicle when it discharged, striking him once, said Capt. Bill Thompson, a sheriff’s spokesman.
“There is currently no information to suggest that this incident was anything other than unintentional in nature,” Thompson said.
Deputies and medics responded to the local Izaak Walton league range southwest of Eugene about 11 a.m. on reports of the shooting. Webber was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation by Lane County detectives and the state Medical Examiner’s office continues. An autopsy will be performed tomorrow, officials said.
Local television station KMTR reported on their website that three people were at the gated range when the shooting occurred.
Emergency dispatchers said Webber was off-duty at the time.

But but, I thought only the police were qualified to have weapons.
    1 Why was it loaded?
2 Why was he taking it out with barrel pointing toward him?

Reminder: If you’re driving, keep the plug in the jug and your fingers off the phone.

Coroner: Man texting before deadly SC crash

ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) — A coroner says a South Carolina man who was killed after wrecking his SUV was drunk and texting at the time of the crash and was still holding his cell phone when his body was found.
Anderson County Coroner Don McCown says 22-year-old Charles Dennard was driving home on U.S. 29 early Friday when his 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee ran off the road.
McCown says the driver then lost control and the SUV plowed through a fence and hit some trees before overturning.
The coroner says Dennard sent his last text at 2:47 a.m., but the wreckage of his SUV wasn’t found for four hours.
McCown says Dennard’s blood-alcohol level was 0.24 percent, three times over the legal limit to drive.

Dear Ms. Winfrey: You do not “give” someone respect, they earn it.

    Oprah wants ‘respect’ for Obama
    By MJ LEE | 02/11/11 8:08 AM Updated: 02/11/11 10:18 AM

Oprah called on President Obama’s critics on Friday to “show some level of respect.”
“I feel that everybody has a learning curve, and I feel that the reason why I was willing to step out for him was because I believed in his integrity and I believed in his heart,” the influential TV host said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” in Chicago.
Of the negative mood of the country, Oprah added, “I think everybody complaining ought to try it for once.”
She said the presidency is a position that “holds a sense of authority and governance over us all,” and that “even if you’re not in support of his policies, there needs to be a certain level of respect.”

A couple of years ago on the old couch, I linked to a “political compass” quiz. I liked it because it looked a political opinions on two dimensions, left/right and authoritarian/libertarian. Lot’s of folks took the quiz and posted their x,y results and I used them to make this graph. (Flickr seems to have reduced the size of the graph, it used to be easier to read.)

I ran across another political quiz site that I like even better. It has more questions, and for each one, allows you to rate the importance of the topic.

According to the survey, I am still a little right of center, and very libertarian.
    Left/Right: 0.37
    Authoritarian/Libertarian: -7.53

If anyone’s interested, post your numbers in x,y format, and I’ll try to find time to make another graph sometime next week.

In view of all the printer testimonials this week, I thought I’d share the following with the Hamster community. It is the Introduction page from the User’s Manual for the C.Itoh CI-600. (This is the printer that needed a sound-proof enclosure and Shop Mom threatened to bury Shop Pop in it.) The following text was cited in a CompSci dissertation as a classic example of poor translation from Japanese to English.

A printer — just pretty simple as ‘data output machine’, without any other additional usage, can become one of the most intimate friends, helpful assistants, or even the sole vital tool of ‘expressions with one’s own idea or technique’ for whom engaged in accumulating, analyzing, synthesizing, and other complicated processing of various kinds of data, which always require being remodeled into fresh one, due to the efforts of current elite.

By the way, in order to reflect people’s demands on ‘what role a printer should play’, our staff of ‘CI-series project team’ keep in mind the consciousness of manufacturing the communication-bridge between ‘human-being and information’, as well as get into their common stride upon the endless race of polishing efficiency and brightening the talent of printability.

Thus, the latest, top-level DOT-MATRIX-LINE-PRINTER CI-600 of the second product in CI-series has been born and brought up fruitfully, under the mental environment as mentioned above.

And accordingly, CI-600 provides not only the traditional merits of CI-300, the first product in CI-series, such as; ‘high quality against low cost’, ‘diversified functions with compact design’, ‘flexibility in accessibileness and durability of print-head’, ‘being sophisticated in mechanism and possibly agile operation’, etc., but also unique achievements of ‘super express printing’ with ‘600 lines per minute’ in maximum and ‘super resolutions’ with ’60 to 400 dots per inch’ horizontally; ‘288 dots per inch’ longitudinally.

We sincerely expect that the PRINTER CI-600 will be appreciated more than ever, in the fields of ‘data-transformation’ by means of human scale, and the subsequent result of ‘fluent metabolism’ as regards the artificial mammoth creature — systematized information, within the up-to-date human society.

#31 M42, pretty much all surveys have some poorly worded questions.

So far, I’m having no trouble interpreting the input. A (0,0) input plots to the exact center of the chart. A positive value on the x (left/right) axis means right, a positive value on the y axis means authoritarian.

The survey site muddies the math up a bit, but it’s no biggie. If someone reports a positive libertarian score, I know to add the minus sign in the spreadsheet to make it plot properly.

The site has some other interesting charts and maps that are based on the numbers from everyone who has taken the quiz thus far. Yes, I know that it’s statistically invalid because the samples are uncontrolled, but they do include a comparison function based on reported demographics.

Is there really a need for blue laws? Do they support competition and free markets?

In 1979, the Connecticut Supreme Court called shenanigans on mnay of the state’s remaining blue laws. But more than 30 years later, it remains illegal to sell liquor, beer, or wine on Sundays or late at night. Once again this year, drinkers and shoppers have rallied to loosen the laws. And once again, they have come up against opposition from the very businesses they long to patronize.

The ban on Sunday sales is essentially a legally-protected day off for liquor store owners, and a guarantee against competition from grocery stores and other shops with longer hours and more convenient locations. Sure, mom and pop package stores might make a little more money if they were open 7 days a week. But then they’d have to work…7 days a week.

One of the many reasons I prefer to travel to Atlanta via Birmingham instead of the mega-airport is that I can pick up a case of beer in Alabama (we fly in Sunday afternoons) so my colleagues and I can gather for pizza and beer at the hotel and plan out our work week.

It’s illegal to buy beer in Georgia on Sundays, except in restaurants and bars. Guess who lobbies the loudest to keep blue laws on the books there. 😉

Re blue laws, I am reminded that in West Texas many decades ago, when the first national chain discount stores arrived in our small towns, there was a big flap over Sunday store hours. The local stores of course did not want the big outsiders to be allowed to open on Sunday at all, but for a while, there was a legal compromise. The big chain (might have been KMart) was allowed to sell some merchandise on Sunday, so they were open, but with lights out over and chains blocking access to, those aisles in the store where you couldn’t buy anything.

I’ve seen cardinals in my yard during warmer winters, but even the neighborhood pigeon flock that lives under a bridge seemed to be thinned out this year. I had mourning doves and sparrows every day. We saw a young red-shouldered hawk perched on our wooden fence one very cold day, swivelling his head in all directions hoping to find something to eat.

I don’t believe there ever was such a person. I was once on the phone to C.Itoh office in California to order some replacement part, and I asked if there was an English version of that manual. When the woman realized I just meant one that was GOOD English, she was offended.

Thankfully, the nuts-and-bolts part of the manual could usually be figured out OK. Line printers like the CI-600 are museum peices now, but this model will live in infamy because of that Introduction.

You could always hope for a Rosetta Stone manual done in several languages like the safety placards in airplanes. But then any of the other languages familiar to the customer could be equally messed up. Picture = 1,000 words—sometimes.

Well, I just finished some yard work. I’ve weeded two of my veggie beds, clearing the winter weeds from around my lettuces – Letti? – lettuce plants and beets. Those weeds are now on top of compost pile #2, where I think some carrot tops have taken root. Compost pile #1 is now lovely soil and I have top dressed my two beds with it. I moved a little more real estate from Mirkwood, and potted up some seeds. I took my seedlings and plants back outside and watered them all. I also pulled up two of my smaller heads of lettuce and they are waiting in a container of water for use either tonight or tomorrow night. I am now inside, and Barf Kitty has taken root on my chest, just under my chin, making this post a little difficult to type and read. Ah, she has decided to indulge herself with some neck kneading. Hubby is bringing dinner home, and I will be taking a shower soon. Barf Kitty will just have to repair back to her warm blanket on the couch.

It’s been a good, productive afternoon.

Good morning all. Well yesterday afternoon we (mostly spouse) hauled the plants out of the garage where they’d spent the last 11 days in sanctuary and survived nicely. They likely needed sunglasses for the shock of all that wonderful light. And a car, banished outside for that period, regained its rightful place in the garage after I swept up the dead leaves and blossoms that littered the floor. The decision to restore everything to its rightful place pretty much rested on the forecast of a low of 33 overnight in the vanguard of more seasonal temps
to follow for the next week or so.

Not so much, unfortunately. It surely was 33 someplace overnight but not here. At 6 am it was 28, no idea how long it had lingered there in the dark of night. Frost everywhere, pansies again prostrate in the flowerbeds, white grass and roofs, frost on the newspaper sleeve, 32 in the barn. All the plants on the patio and close to the house are fine. We had been cautious not to put them back in their usual, pre-ice-age places. And the warm southerly wind is kindly making the world around here comfortable. Thank you, Lord.

Well, my hamstrings and other body parts (which I’m not mentioning, remembering the crowd with which I am conversing) are sore today. It’s a good kind of sore, letting me know that I enjoyed yesterday afternoon in productive ways. I now have to go back to church to celebrate our new permanent deacon. It’s a wonder he was ordained, the man is — okay, time to be charitable. Let’s just say that when I die, I don’t want this man arranging my funeral. There were groups of people who let the diocese know they didn’t think he deserved to be ordained. I guess he was able to bullwiss the diocese, as he has done with our past several pastors.

So I will slap a smile on my face, take my finger food contribution, and welcome our new deacon. Come home. Puke.

    Go to confession.

#68 Tedtam, we currently have an “interim” minister at our little UU church as we spend the 18-24 months it will take to find a permanent replacement for our prior minister who moved on earlier this year.

The interim is a nice enough guy, as well as experienced. But he’s a little boring. I hope they find someone more like Matt. I didn’t agree with him on everything, but that’s to be expected in this kind of fellowship.

Ok, here I go again, dissing Michelle Obama. I came across a big slide show of the presidential couple through the years and actually thought I’d find some new tacky fashions from which to get a laugh. But for the most part, Michele looked good in her clothes, had good hair days, and usually had a big smile on her attractive face. Then I came across a shot I just couldn’t let slide. I’d okay the use of taxpayer money to send Michelle to charm school if they could teach her how to sit gracefully:

A pose like that makes her legs look very chunky. And speaking of chunky, there was a reason why First Lady Hillary Clinton switched to pant suits after a few pix of her ankles in a skirt had been released.

I never had a Wang, remember?

I’ve made it through the reception for our new deacon without once having to talk to him. His wife did come up and hug me and thank me for my support, without which they couldn’t have done it. We normally attend different masses on Sunday, and this is the woman who for several years kept asking me why I had come back to the parish, even after the first two times I told her we never left. She thought we had left the parish because I sent Handsome Son to a different church for his confirmation prep rather than have him turned off of his religion by being taught by the man who is now deacon. Lovely barely made it through his prep! When he took over confirmation prep, the whole confirmation team left within three months.

His wife thinks their son can do no wrong and is totally wrapped around her husband’s little finger. She thinks he has a good singing voice, because he thinks he has a good singing voice. Think of metal plate being dragged over gravel. He may be on pitch, but it’s still painful. Their son is a self-centered little PITA, who openly treats altar server duty as something just to get through because his parents are making him do it. He fidgets, he ties his shoes, he messes with his rope belt, he rolls his eyes occasionally, he sometimes looks like he almost falls asleep. I watched him at the reception, feeling like Mr. Big Shot because his daddy was the center of attention. (Anecdote: When I ran the youth ministry and was still on good terms with Mr. Deacon and his wife, they brought their very young son (about six) to one of our dances. Mr. D had volunteered to be our DJ, and was playing music the kids had brought instead of approved tunes as I had asked. I was somewhat horrified to hear some of the lyrics being put over the speaker, and he wouldn’t relent to my demands that the music be screened. Anyway, after several hours, he and his wife started to panic because their little boy was missing. We had teenagers all over the church campus, calling his name, looking behind bushes, checking locked doors. We were about to call the cops and begin searching the neighborhood when suddenly little Mr. Wonderful was found, “asleep,” behind a lawn mower. Instead of correcting his behavior, perhaps suggesting that the next time he come to her when he got tired, perhaps removing portions of his rear end, she only said “He’s just a little boy” and hugged him. Little Boy sat there with a wiss-eatin’ grin on his face, and never volunteered nor was asked to apologize for putting us all in a panic.)

He lost his confirmation team for the same reason he lost my respect – when I got tired of his “help”. His help usually involved him taking over and telling everyone what to do. His idea of a “retreat” for teenagers is pretty much to tell them what they think, why it’s wrong, and what they should be thinking – according to him. And rules don’t apply to him, either. And he can do no wrong. Trying to make him see why his method won’t work is like talking to a brick wall. I bruised my forehead on that wall until it was a bloody pulp for several years, and I just avoid him as much as possible now.

I don’t doubt that our new deacon wants to serve our parish. I just wonder if it’s for the right reasons. I wonder even more if he realizes why he thinks he wants to serve. This puts him in the catbird seat for dictating to others even more. I just hope and pray, sincerely, that God finds a way of helping him see himself as others see him. With some humility and true discipleship, he could become a very good deacon. Today, however, I just avoided him.

But the cake was delicious, and I got to catch up with a lot of my friends.

    Just my luck…

For a couple of months now, I’ve noticed a new face at church. She visibly enjoys our music, and in chatting with her at coffee hour I’ve learned that she has a nice, easily induced laugh, is not too young, got her masters, and her youngest is in college.

I’d made up my mind to ask her out next time she showed up, and was ecouraged when she smiled, waved, and motioned me over at coffee today. Then she said, “Bob, I’d like you to meet my partner…”

What the heck. Her partner is nice too. I think I’ll suggest we all do lunch sometime.

RUSH: You’re more than welcome. I’ve got the solution to all this. I’ve got the solution to most crime in America. From this day forward, somebody propose it, liberals should not be allowed to buy guns. It’s just that simple. Liberals should have their speech controlled and not be allowed to buy guns. I mean if we want to get serious about this, if we want to face this head on, we’re gonna have to openly admit, liberals should not be allowed to buy guns, nor should they be allowed to use computer keyboards or typewriters, word processors or e-mails, and they should have their speech controlled. If we did those three or four things, I can’t tell you what a sane, calm, civil, fun-loving society we would have. Take guns out of the possession, out of the hands of liberals, take their typewriters and their keyboards away from ’em, don’t let ’em anywhere near a gun, and control their speech. You would wipe out 90% of the crime, 85 to 95% of the hate, and a hundred percent of the lies from society.

Well he left his shaving kit, and they are leaving my other brother’s in Porter, can we meet him halfway with it and just go to that Walmart at 242 and I-45 where everything is in a different place than in our Walmart and lots more people go to?

There are two types of deacons in the Church. The first is a transitional deacon, which we are lucky enough to have. This deacon is on his way to becoming ordained priest; his diaconate ordination allows him to perform certain functions a lay person (not ordained) would not be able to do. He can preside over wedding and funeral ceremonies that do not involve a mass. He learns how to handle confessions and practices giving homilies (sermons) during mass. He works with a pastor to learn how to handle a parish, with the intent of learning everything he needs learn in order to minister to his flock as both a priest and administrator. Our deacon told us that his diaconate will last about nine months. Transitional deacons should not be married, since he is planning to be a priest.

A permanent deacon, which is what we gained on Saturday, is a man who is not planning to continue on to the priesthood. This means he can be married. A permanent deacon can preside over certain ceremonies such as weddings and funerals, as long as a mass is not included. Because he is not a priest or planning to become a priest, there is no training for confessions or other sacraments that require a priest. Permanent deacons can be part-time or full time, and are used as an assistant to the priest. They assist the pastor with whatever the pastor needs for them to do – plan liturgies, assist in wedding preparation with couples, assist with office administration, etc.

Well, we had a lemon butter sauce on our chicken tonight, using a lemon from my lemon tree. We also had a salad with lettuce from our garden.

I planted some more lettuce in the garden. One square of collards. Not big on collards, but going to give ’em a try once this year.

I read an article about what is most feasible to plant in the garden. Lettuce was high on the list. When a head of leaf lettuce is well over a dollar a head and our fondness for salads, it will be worth my while to see if I can keep some lettuce going for a while.

Bob42, I just don’t see how he was able to achieve ordination at any level. This man is personally responsible for destroying a well-oiled confirmation team, wissing off and running off the whole Spanish choir, almost demolishing the altar server program, being personally responsible for the decline of the high school faith formation class, and offending an untold number of parishioners, some of which will never return to our parish, especially now.

But of course, he has no idea that he caused all of this decay at our parish, because he is never wrong. It’s not that he disagrees with you on any topic, it’s just that your words bounce off him. It just never sinks in that he’s not perfect.

There are other greens you could try. Mustard, Swiss Chard, Kale, Kohlrabi, Turnip Greens, and many others. Most have a bit milder flavor; all are very nutricious and good for you.
Don’t forget spinach. It’s not really related, but is still very tasty and good for you.

Ah, yes, spinach seedlings growing, and I’ll be seeding a few squares soon. I’ve killed the kohlrabi before, but it did give it the old college try. I have some swiss chard, but haven’t had much luck with it. Not like that’ll stop me! 😉

Tedtam, perhaps it might help if you thought of him as the Catholic equivalent of the Church Lady. 😉

Also, I’m no psychic but I think I see a greenhouse in your future.

Yes, when Hubby’s snoring drives me from the bedroom, it might be nice to have a nice, warm, quiet place to sleep. 😉
