I’ll start w/serious note on Egypt. (Personal) Rock and a hard place category. Should a dictator be ousted and maybe have Egypt turned int another Iran, or hopefully, a Turkey? Or keep a known quantity? I honestly don’t know. Seems like ousting is carrying popular opinion, but opinions are like buttholes, everbody has one.
Obama will go down in history as the president who lost Egypt.
Jimmy Carter will go down in American history as “the president who lost Iran,” which during his term went from being a major strategic ally of the United States to being the revolutionary Islamic Republic. Barack Obama will be remembered as the president who “lost” Turkey, Lebanon and Egypt, and during whose tenure America’s alliances in the Middle East crumbled.
The superficial circumstances are similar. In both cases, a United States in financial crisis and after failed wars loses global influence under a leftist president whose good intentions are interpreted abroad as expressions of weakness. The results are reflected in the fall of regimes that were dependent on their relationship with Washington for survival, or in a change in their orientation, as with Ankara.

In the past few months many opinion pieces have appeared in the Western press asserting that the days of Mubarak’s regime are numbered and calling on Obama to reach out to the opposition in Egypt. There was a sense that the U.S. foreign policy establishment was shaking off its long-term protege in Cairo, while the administration lagged behind the columnists and commentators.
The administration faced a dilemma. One can guess that Obama himself identified with the demonstrators, not the aging dictator. But a superpower isn’t the civil rights movement. If it abandons its allies the moment they flounder, who would trust it tomorrow? That’s why Obama rallied to Mubarak’s side until Friday, when the force of the protests bested his regime.

I was late for work this morning, which is kinda hard to do when you work from home.
I blame daughter and her new bf, who somehow convinced me to mix up some Long Islands very late last night. We each just had one, but since I use pint beer glasses, each glass contains a bit over 3.75 oz of 80-90 proof.
It was fun while it lasted. Daughter and I worked long and hard on our 4 hand 2 keyboard arrangement of 13 or 7 to 4 — A Study in Prime Number Time Signatures, while BF picked it out on guitar. We later drug out the flute, sax, and clarinet and mourned the loss of our lips. It was well after 3am when we crashed.
I was only a few minutes late, but while staggering downstairs to start the coffee, I heard bf in the bathroom, driving the porcelain bus.

Well this may well be their goal, I doubt it will be successful. The Iranians see that as their true destiny and will object to Egypt taking the crown. No matter what they profess to be their higher motives, setting up the caliphate, it is all about increasing their personal power and influence. After all, somebody has to run the caliphate and I doubt the Iranians, Sauds, or whoever is going to be willing to share power. It’s just not in their culture. IMHO

The open and honest debate of various points of view should be encouraged. It creates critical thinking skills, something sorely lacking in many people. As long as the teacher doesn’t promote or judge a single view, let the young people discuss it. I remember being taught about people believing the earth was flat, centre of the universe, et al. Open debate is, as they say, good for the soul.

I find it really interesting how the evolutionist claim to be the “tolerant ones” yet when the other side, ID, wants to discuss the issue the ID side is branded intolerant and the issue does not get discussed. IMHO, the reason the evolutionists are so strident in their opinion, and are usually atheists is that if they concede that there could be an Intelligent Designer, then they would have to accept that there are absolutes, good and bad, right and wrong, etc and they can not/will not make that leap away from the “I, myself am my own god” position.

Like Mr. Canuck said I think the genie is out of the bottle. I disagree with the article OldTimer linked to. I do not believe we have failed in our two wars. On the contrary we have allowed tens of millions of people to vote for their own leaders. Freedom is highly contagious. We have seen massive protests in Iran. Now we are seeing massive protests in Tunisia, Yemen, and Egypt. The Tunisians have successfully replaced their autocratic ruler and hopefully they will have the opportunity in the near future to elect their leaders. I do not see the vast majority of Egyptians marching for more hardliners that come with Sharia law. I see them marching for a chance to be heard. I believe that the U.S. will still have an ally in whoever replaces Mubarek.
On a separate but related note, I saw an interesting commercial while I was eating my lunch today at a restaurant. The TV was tuned into an arabic news station that was broadcasting live images from Egypt. They went to commercial. Keep in mind I do not read or speak Arabic, but the gist of the commercial came through (or so I hope I interpreted it correctly). It showed several Arabs in different settings depositing money into little containers. These appeared to be charitable donation boxes. All of the boxes were put into a wooden crate and shown on the back of a truck driving off. The next frame shows the same crate opening and the money has been replaced by AKs and scores of ammo tins. Then you see your local neighborhood terrorist lockin & loadin. Some words flashed on the screen and were then splattered with blood. I believe the commercial was an admonishment to be careful of who you donate to and what they do with your money so that you do not have innocent blood on your hands.

Wrong again. DI and other orgs have published and pushed multiple textbooks in multiple places, and there have been multiple decisions against them. ID is not science, and that point has not been refuted by anyone, at all, here or elsewhere.

I may not be a typical atheist — I don’t know a lot of them personally in Houston for comparison — but atheism does not require one to say there is no right or wrong. For example, Ayn Rand was an atheist but Objectivism is a moral philosophy.

Personally, I think the Chick-fil-a nugget party platters (available in different sizes) are a proven price performer, having soothed the nearly insatiable appetites of hoards of hungry teens that used to hang out here more often, and quite tasty to boot. It would be nice if they were open on Sundays too, but that’s no biggie. The nuggets are good cold too. I’ve seen kids devour them for breakfast.

First, politicians should not micro-manage curricula to the degree that they desire. Secondly, they’re being completely dishonest in regard to their motives.
Obviously bob doesn’t pay much care about California’s school curriculum.

So I’m watching The Greely Expedition on American Experience on PBS. I dig those historical accounts. Very well done…then they get to the epilogue. One of the interviewees had to make sure we knew the data gathered by the expedition is now being used … to prop up MMGW. Is there any escape from this madness?

I actually agree with the then senator Barak Obama’s position. It makes perfect sense. It’s kinda poetically just when a judge uses O’s own words to declare his benchmark legislative achievement unconstitutional.

I view myself as an Independent and not as a R or D and therefore inhabit the middle rather than either side of the aisle.
My point was that the arguments on some subjects such as WOD, Evolution, and the role of religion in society have been hashed sufficently that I (and I hope everyone else) has a pretty good idea where the other stands. I suspect that most of the folks on this blog have pretty strong beliefs that they have developed over many decades. These beliefs are at the core of their being and it is not an easy task (futile) to dissuade them. It only makes them mad and spoils any chance of getting agreement on other issues where there might be common ground.
I am not in Bob’s camp with regard to drugs. Indeed, Ms Simple and I suffer the consequences of the failures of the War on Drugs daily. We are raising the child of our drug addled daughter. I am very angry at Texas House and Senate Republicans for their inabilities to close the legal loopholes that allow the sham “Pain Clinics” to still exist. I am waiting to see if this session will do anything on the issue.
I do agree with Bob on a purely philosophical level that the government does not have any business telling me how to run my personal life, as long as, I do not impact others. I think Bob should be able to go smoke a joint at the beach and enjoy the sunset if he so desired.
My observation is that most folks cannot limit themselves to responsible recreational usage. I have worked in Engineering/Construction most of my adult life and I have vivid memories of what construction sites were like before drug testing. One could get a contact high walking past the “blue room” toilets at sites. Accident rates dropped dramatically once we implemented testing.
I do not feel especially threatened if the wait staff at Pappasitoes is high, but the crane driver moving heavy loads over the top of my head is another story. Clearly there are jobs out there where the slightest drug use cannot be tolerated. If an employer wants to have a drug free workplace; then I feel that is his right to implement those policies.
I do agree with Bob that the War on Drugs so far is a dismal failure, but only as far as the tactics and not the goals. I would like to see a lot more of the monies spent on drug rehab and less of it sent to #$#$% Central and South American militaries to support their Keystone Cop interdiction efforts.
