Monday Jewelry Open Comments

Valentine’s Day is almost here, guys. Fortunately for you, I have a gift suggestion for that special lady in your lives.

I was introduced to the work of Erica Weiner in December during a photo shoot of the folks we crowned the St. Louis Fashion Originals of 2010. Saskya Emmink Bryon was wearing a tiny, unusal, vaguely oval gold charm on her necklace.

It’s not likely that one of her friends will have one, so you know she’ll be the talk of the town.

    G’Morning all
    Everbody sleep in?
I’ll start w/serious note on Egypt. (Personal) Rock and a hard place category. Should a dictator be ousted and maybe have Egypt turned int another Iran, or hopefully, a Turkey? Or keep a known quantity? I honestly don’t know. Seems like ousting is carrying popular opinion, but opinions are like buttholes, everbody has one.

Obama will go down in history as the president who lost Egypt.
Jimmy Carter will go down in American history as “the president who lost Iran,” which during his term went from being a major strategic ally of the United States to being the revolutionary Islamic Republic. Barack Obama will be remembered as the president who “lost” Turkey, Lebanon and Egypt, and during whose tenure America’s alliances in the Middle East crumbled.
The superficial circumstances are similar. In both cases, a United States in financial crisis and after failed wars loses global influence under a leftist president whose good intentions are interpreted abroad as expressions of weakness. The results are reflected in the fall of regimes that were dependent on their relationship with Washington for survival, or in a change in their orientation, as with Ankara.

    SNIP

In the past few months many opinion pieces have appeared in the Western press asserting that the days of Mubarak’s regime are numbered and calling on Obama to reach out to the opposition in Egypt. There was a sense that the U.S. foreign policy establishment was shaking off its long-term protege in Cairo, while the administration lagged behind the columnists and commentators.
The administration faced a dilemma. One can guess that Obama himself identified with the demonstrators, not the aging dictator. But a superpower isn’t the civil rights movement. If it abandons its allies the moment they flounder, who would trust it tomorrow? That’s why Obama rallied to Mubarak’s side until Friday, when the force of the protests bested his regime.

The United States is “losing credibility by the day” in calling for democracy in Egypt while continuing to support President Hosni Mubarak, leading dissident Mohamed ElBaradei said Sunday.

Dee’s only been retired one day and we had our first fight.

We were television. I had the remote and was switching back & forth between a fishing channel and the porn channel.
She became more and more annoyed and finally said:
“For God’s sake! LEAVE IT ON THE PORN CHANNEL!
You already know how to fish!”

    So sad, funny, but sad.

A teacher who advises colleagues on how to avoid affairs with students was caught having sex with a teenager in the back of her car.

Courtney Bowles was found by a police officer naked lying on top of the boy, who was also completely naked, from her school in Colorado.

A partly consumed bottle of vodka was also found in the car with the couple.

Must be part of the therapy to releave stress.

Mr. Gingrich explained that “the big-city attacks” on ethanol subsidies are really attempts to deny prosperity to rural America, adding that “Obviously big urban newspapers want to kill it because it’s working, and you wonder, ‘What are their values?’”

Newt Gingrich, based on this quote alone, is a populist A-hole politician scum-bag who will say anything to get elected. I think we have had quite enough of that already and those types have driven our once powerful country to the brink of insolvency.
The absolute best (most favorable to corn) estimates are that it takes 1.25 gallons of diesel fuel to produce 1 gallon of ethanol – how in the name of sanity can that be called “renewable” or anything but stupid to produce ethanol from corn to use as fuel???

I was late for work this morning, which is kinda hard to do when you work from home.

I blame daughter and her new bf, who somehow convinced me to mix up some Long Islands very late last night. We each just had one, but since I use pint beer glasses, each glass contains a bit over 3.75 oz of 80-90 proof.

It was fun while it lasted. Daughter and I worked long and hard on our 4 hand 2 keyboard arrangement of 13 or 7 to 4 — A Study in Prime Number Time Signatures, while BF picked it out on guitar. We later drug out the flute, sax, and clarinet and mourned the loss of our lips. It was well after 3am when we crashed.

I was only a few minutes late, but while staggering downstairs to start the coffee, I heard bf in the bathroom, driving the porcelain bus.

Some good news perhaps or at least not quite as bad news.

Contrary to popular belief in the West, the Muslim Brotherhood is not a militant Islamist group with close ties to al Qaeda, and its active participation in Egyptian politics would not turn Egypt into a terrorist safe haven. In fact, Ayman al Zawahiri, al Qaeda’s deputy leader, criticized the Brotherhood at length in 2008 for operating within the bounds of the Egyptian constitution and not “recognizing the authority of Shari’a.” Likewise, Al Fajr Media Center, the official network responsible for disseminating messages from al Qaeda factions, released an audio tape in August 2010 called “Manufacturing Terrorism” that stated the following: “The Muslim Brotherhood thinks that democracy is the path to take [for change], while jihadi groups believe the path is through jihad.”

Anyone want to speculate on how the folks at the House of Saud are feeling right now after observing how Big O treats our allies? Or is Big O himself a party to this effort to return the entire middle east to militant Islam? And yet, given all the risk, we still cannot drill for our own oil, he’s shutting down the largest coal mine in West Virginia, and is frantically working to shut down natural gas production and oil refining in Texas. This just cannot be coincidence – it has to be orchestrated by someone somewhere.

Well this may well be their goal, I doubt it will be successful. The Iranians see that as their true destiny and will object to Egypt taking the crown. No matter what they profess to be their higher motives, setting up the caliphate, it is all about increasing their personal power and influence. After all, somebody has to run the caliphate and I doubt the Iranians, Sauds, or whoever is going to be willing to share power. It’s just not in their culture. IMHO

The legislation (HB 1551) titled the “Scientific Education and Academic Freedom Act” singled out “biological evolution, the chemical origins of life, global warming, and human cloning” as topics that are controversial and thus questionable.

The open and honest debate of various points of view should be encouraged. It creates critical thinking skills, something sorely lacking in many people. As long as the teacher doesn’t promote or judge a single view, let the young people discuss it. I remember being taught about people believing the earth was flat, centre of the universe, et al. Open debate is, as they say, good for the soul.

It is an interesting take on things. Another contributing factor is the number of people some of these countries (esp. Tunisia) have sent to college (for free or very cheap). These people then graduate and end up un- or underemployed because the economy cannot absorb them all in jobs that will use their educations. They then wind up flipping falafel and seething.

So far so good – except now they want to be able to live under sharia and not the US Constitution, they want special rights that apply only to them. I say that if you want to live under sharia law then go back to the sewer from whence you came. Sharia, like diarrhea, when left unchecked will eventually kill the host.

#43 Tex, I do see problems–Two of them in fact. First, politicians should not micro-manage curricula to the degree that they desire. Secondly, they’re being completely dishonest in regard to their motives. “Teach the controversy!” is just the latest in a series of attempts promote young earth creationism through the use of a false dichotomy, “If there are weaknesses in evolution, creationism must be true.” Such attempts in Texas, OK, LA, GA, and other states are fully documented by the National Center for Science Education.

Kern doesn’t want to limit her defensive meddling to high schools. In 2009, she supported a resolution condemning the invitation of Richard Dawkins to speak publicly at the University of OK.

A Resolution opposing the invitation to Richard Dawkins to speak on campus; encouraging the University of Oklahoma to engage in a certain discussion of certain scientific theories; and directing distribution.

WHEREAS, the University of Oklahoma is a publicly funded institution which should be open to all ideas and should train students in all disciplines of study and research and to use thinking and free inquiry; and

    WHEREAS, the University of Oklahoma, as part of the Darwin 2009 Project, has invited as a public speaker on campus, Richard Dawkins of Oxford University, whose published opinions, as represented in his 2006 book “The God Delusion”, and public statements on the theory of evolution demonstrate an intolerance for cultural diversity and diversity of thinking and are views that are not shared and are not representative of the thinking of a majority of the citizens of Oklahoma;

Folks like Kerns don’t want an honest debate. There is every indication that they fear it, as well as any scientific discovery that doesn’t fully mesh with their opinions.

I’m not critical of Kern’s beliefs. She is free to hold them. I am very critical of her obtuse dishonesty and repeated attempts to force the state to promote her opinions to everyone else’s kids, and that is precisely what she has been doing.

The educated peoples, western educated, have seen a better, much different life and want to have it. This is unlike some of the other arab states where the population is illiterate.

I may be mistaken, but the only person I recall ever using that term here is you. I assume you refer to those who believe the earth is only 10 thousand years old. As has been stated here before by others, many people are comfortable with the idea of the big bang and the resulting evolution of the planet and various species. The difference is how the fuse was lit, God or something else.
And I see no reference to that in her bill. My interpreration is she wants both sides given. I also disagree with her attempts to disinvite someone who’s views she disagrees with, just like the university that disinvited the Palin girl.

#45, Bonecrusher, Alberta has the same problem in Canada. They brought in huge numbers of Somalians and other Africans to work in huge meat packing plant with government subsidized wages, full benefits, the whole nine yards. Within 10 years the once nice town is a complete opening in an outhouse. Three of my kids lived and worked there with their families, they all moved out six years ago. Drugs, rapes and all kinds of assorted crimes are rampant. The natural Canadians have all left or moved way out. Just walking down the street you feel like you’re in some third world country. They brought in Somali speaking teachers, eating establishments, grocery stores and all their crap from back home.

I find it really interesting how the evolutionist claim to be the “tolerant ones” yet when the other side, ID, wants to discuss the issue the ID side is branded intolerant and the issue does not get discussed. IMHO, the reason the evolutionists are so strident in their opinion, and are usually atheists is that if they concede that there could be an Intelligent Designer, then they would have to accept that there are absolutes, good and bad, right and wrong, etc and they can not/will not make that leap away from the “I, myself am my own god” position.

#49 Bones, sorry, but it has been repeatedly demonstrated that ID and creationism are one in the same, and that people who support the former don’t hesitate to employ blatant dishonesty in their attempts to call them “science.”

In Kitzmiller v Dover, the NCSE, using the Discovery Institute’s own documents, clearly proved that the text book in question was a find-all/change revision of an earlier version of a creation “science” textbook that had been ruled unconstitutional multiple times.

After the trial, there were calls for the defendants accused of not presenting their case honestly to be put on trial for committing perjury. “Witnesses either testified inconsistently, or lied outright under oath on several occasions,” Judge Jones wrote. “The inescapable truth is that both [Alan] Bonsell and [William] Buckingham lied at their January 3, 2005 depositions. … Bonsell repeatedly failed to testify in a truthful manner. … Defendants have unceasingly attempted in vain to distance themselves from their own actions and statements, which culminated in repetitious, untruthful testimony.”

The judge in the Dover case is a Christian, as well as a conservative republican Bush appointee. He went easy on the perjurers and DI’s “expert” witnesses who completely collapsed under cross exam.

ID is not science and has no basis in science. Neither is irreducible complexity. Perhaps we could discuss that in more depth a bit later.

Personally, I find no problem with the coexistence of religions and scientific research. Deistically “guided” evolution is not outside of the realms of possibility, but again, it is not science and should not be taught as if it were. In sociology, philosophy, or history, various religious topics are quite appropriate–But not in biology.

Like Mr. Canuck said I think the genie is out of the bottle. I disagree with the article OldTimer linked to. I do not believe we have failed in our two wars. On the contrary we have allowed tens of millions of people to vote for their own leaders. Freedom is highly contagious. We have seen massive protests in Iran. Now we are seeing massive protests in Tunisia, Yemen, and Egypt. The Tunisians have successfully replaced their autocratic ruler and hopefully they will have the opportunity in the near future to elect their leaders. I do not see the vast majority of Egyptians marching for more hardliners that come with Sharia law. I see them marching for a chance to be heard. I believe that the U.S. will still have an ally in whoever replaces Mubarek.

On a separate but related note, I saw an interesting commercial while I was eating my lunch today at a restaurant. The TV was tuned into an arabic news station that was broadcasting live images from Egypt. They went to commercial. Keep in mind I do not read or speak Arabic, but the gist of the commercial came through (or so I hope I interpreted it correctly). It showed several Arabs in different settings depositing money into little containers. These appeared to be charitable donation boxes. All of the boxes were put into a wooden crate and shown on the back of a truck driving off. The next frame shows the same crate opening and the money has been replaced by AKs and scores of ammo tins. Then you see your local neighborhood terrorist lockin & loadin. Some words flashed on the screen and were then splattered with blood. I believe the commercial was an admonishment to be careful of who you donate to and what they do with your money so that you do not have innocent blood on your hands.

“Young Earth” creationists believe that the Earth/Universe is ~10,000 years old.

Intelligent Design proponents believe that the Universe is several billion years old.

ID proponents believe that God brought the Universe into being through some unknown mechanism and set things in motion to bring about the world as we know it, either from the outset or through his guidance across the millennia.

ID proponents generally agree with the evolutionists on everything except the prime cause (and potentially how all those pesky molecules happened to form RNA/DNA, etc.).

I will firmly state that some organisms change due to competitive pressure. A fish remains a fish and a bird remains a bird; that their form changes somewhat does not change them from a fish or a bird. To believe in evolution theory, one would have to believe that random chemicals just happen to randomly associate into self replicating life forms then change over millennia into different forms, fish to dinosaurs to birds to snakes or whatever into mammals into apes into humans – BS, it did not happen that way and any rational look at the actual data and the actual form of organisms today vs the fossil record will show you that it is impossible.

You must travel in a vastly different circle than I do. I can remember the last time I ran across one of those defensive theocratic religious authoritarians. I have had and continue to have excellent discussions with people of many diverse faiths or those lacking faith.

And I see no reference to that in her bill. My interpreration is she wants both sides given.

On the other “side” are defensive theocratic religious authoritarians who feel threatened by real science, and do not hesitate to use dishonesty

Three travelers, Bob, Sarge, and Texanadian get off a train in Scotland. The first thing they see a lone black sheep standing sideways to them in a field.
Bob immediately exclaims, “Look, all sheep in Scotland are black.”
Wherein Sarge patiently explains, “Actually all we know Bob, is one sheep in Scotland is black.”
Then the Texanadian points out, “Actually all we know is one sheep in Scotland is black, on one side.”
Bob, painting all creationist with the same brush based on your interpretation of one woman’s views is I feel, jumping to a rather large conclusion. I think that arguing with bob about evolution is the same thing as mud wrestling with a pig, one gets dirty, worn out, accomplishes nothing and the pig enjoys it.

I think its an excellent way of exhibiting how left leaning ideologs like Bob use hate speech to further their goals. In this case, he has taken someone’s religious beliefs and used arguments unsupported by any facts pertinent to the actual issue, and extended that through his bias to condemn all persons whose beliefs are even tangentially connected.

In short, Bob is a religious bigot.

#60 Nice diversion Sarge. You still have not offered a single shred of evidence to support your labeling me as a hypocrite.

In Kitzmiller v Dover, the NCSE, using the Discovery Institute’s own documents, clearly proved that the text book in question was a find-all/change revision of an earlier version of a creation “science” textbook that had been ruled unconstitutional multiple times.

Wherein Bob42 uses his incredibly broad brush to paint millions of people by using a single court case based on a single book.

Wrong again. DI and other orgs have published and pushed multiple textbooks in multiple places, and there have been multiple decisions against them. ID is not science, and that point has not been refuted by anyone, at all, here or elsewhere.

I’m not going to get into this evolution fight again in a major way, but I do want to comment on this one item:

usually atheists is that if they concede that there could be an Intelligent Designer, then they would have to accept that there are absolutes, good and bad, right and wrong, etc and they can not/will not make that leap away from the “I, myself am my own god” position.

I may not be a typical atheist — I don’t know a lot of them personally in Houston for comparison — but atheism does not require one to say there is no right or wrong. For example, Ayn Rand was an atheist but Objectivism is a moral philosophy.

52 Percent of republicans still agree with this statement:

God created humans in present form within the last 10,000 years.

34 Percent of independents and democrats agreed with it. So yes, Virginia, there is more than one young earth creationist black sheep in right wing America. Only 34% of republicans agreed with old earth, divinely guided evolution.

Broad brushing? Not on my part. I’ve done my homework.

Hyms as I recall are religous songs praises, God, Christ, the Holy Spirit and other things religous and related to the beliefs of the church and God. Yet as an avowed atheist you sing this songs that inspire people to believe in something that you don’t. Now, this odd situation may have been discussed here before, but if you only sing in order to have a better social life, meet lil sisters and such, that does strike me as hypocritical or at least dishonest. There may be true believer who would like to participate in the choir and while he/she may not have a voice as nice as yours, their faith would bring something to the music that you, as an unbeliever can never bring. He he he, the evil minds that created Obamacare forgot to include a severability clause in all 2,000++ pages, ergo if one part of it violates the Constitution, the whole thing is unconstitutional. That major detail had been noticed shortly after the monstrosity was enacted, and very few media types paid any attention–mayhap because they had no clue what it was. In the alternative, some patriot mole with access to its creation made sure a severability clause was not in it. But given the judge’s careful opinion it sounds like he would have declared it unconstitutional regardless of the presence or absence of the clause.

On to SCOTUS to drive silver stakes through its heart and bury it for good.

Define “present form”. How much evolutionary change happened within the past 10,000 years?

I’ll postulate that the size of a large round number varies directly with the portion of the population able to grasp the significance of the difference between it and another large round number. e.g., A sizable percentage of the population cannot grasp the real difference between say $10 billion and $1 trillion. Or that 10,000 years is an amount of time that is sufficiently large that most people are not able to put it in its proper perspective.

Personally, I think the Chick-fil-a nugget party platters (available in different sizes) are a proven price performer, having soothed the nearly insatiable appetites of hoards of hungry teens that used to hang out here more often, and quite tasty to boot. It would be nice if they were open on Sundays too, but that’s no biggie. The nuggets are good cold too. I’ve seen kids devour them for breakfast.

Dang! I’ve been running all day, with nary a chance for a calm breath, and I come back to find that the usual suspects are beating each other with dead horses again.

The horse is dead. No amount of arguing will bring that horse to life, guys.
The horse is big and heavy. Don’t you get tired of swinging it around?
The horse is stinky and is gathering hordes of flies. Just let Bob have it – he seems to enjoy stuff that smells funny.

We used to call that the “Eradication of the Defunct Rodent Syndrome”.

I quite agree with your thoughts. All of this along with the War on Drugs has been hashed around so many times that this blog is beginning to smell like a Waffle House. Yet, my keen powers of observation indicate that no one has had an epiphany of the spiritual or secular nature.

The “Queen Tinkles” thing was old before it even started.

And if you want to waste your time arguing with Bob over things that he will never change on, especially when I think you’re just feeding his need to be ornery and contrary, go right ahead. I stopped reading those posts a long time. I just skim them long enough to say, “Oh, dead horse” and move on.

I just went outside to cover my garden and turn on the flood light I have hanging inside. My hope is that the lettuce – which I haven’t killed yet and actually seems to be thriving, go figure! – will make it through this next week.

My Bibb lettuce is really pretty. The oak leaf lettuce and the green leaf are pretty darn gorgeous, too. I’ve made several salads with them so far. I have one kale that seems to finally be picking up steam, but my other kale is kind of limping along.

My sister with the chickens gave me a bag of chicken compost, which I worked into one of my dormant beds. That was some strong stuff! I’ll be very interested to see how that section does this year.

So I’m watching The Greely Expedition on American Experience on PBS. I dig those historical accounts. Very well done…then they get to the epilogue. One of the interviewees had to make sure we knew the data gathered by the expedition is now being used … to prop up MMGW. Is there any escape from this madness?

“I note that in 2008, then-Senator Obama supported a health care reform proposal that did not include an individual mandate because he was at that time strongly opposed to the idea, stating that, ‘If a mandate was the solution, we can try that to solve homelessness by mandating everybody to buy a house,’” Judge Vinson wrote in a footnote toward the end of his 78-page ruling Monday.

I actually agree with the then senator Barak Obama’s position. It makes perfect sense. It’s kinda poetically just when a judge uses O’s own words to declare his benchmark legislative achievement unconstitutional.

    117 Darren,

I view myself as an Independent and not as a R or D and therefore inhabit the middle rather than either side of the aisle.

My point was that the arguments on some subjects such as WOD, Evolution, and the role of religion in society have been hashed sufficently that I (and I hope everyone else) has a pretty good idea where the other stands. I suspect that most of the folks on this blog have pretty strong beliefs that they have developed over many decades. These beliefs are at the core of their being and it is not an easy task (futile) to dissuade them. It only makes them mad and spoils any chance of getting agreement on other issues where there might be common ground.

I am not in Bob’s camp with regard to drugs. Indeed, Ms Simple and I suffer the consequences of the failures of the War on Drugs daily. We are raising the child of our drug addled daughter. I am very angry at Texas House and Senate Republicans for their inabilities to close the legal loopholes that allow the sham “Pain Clinics” to still exist. I am waiting to see if this session will do anything on the issue.

I do agree with Bob on a purely philosophical level that the government does not have any business telling me how to run my personal life, as long as, I do not impact others. I think Bob should be able to go smoke a joint at the beach and enjoy the sunset if he so desired.

My observation is that most folks cannot limit themselves to responsible recreational usage. I have worked in Engineering/Construction most of my adult life and I have vivid memories of what construction sites were like before drug testing. One could get a contact high walking past the “blue room” toilets at sites. Accident rates dropped dramatically once we implemented testing.

I do not feel especially threatened if the wait staff at Pappasitoes is high, but the crane driver moving heavy loads over the top of my head is another story. Clearly there are jobs out there where the slightest drug use cannot be tolerated. If an employer wants to have a drug free workplace; then I feel that is his right to implement those policies.

I do agree with Bob that the War on Drugs so far is a dismal failure, but only as far as the tactics and not the goals. I would like to see a lot more of the monies spent on drug rehab and less of it sent to #$#$% Central and South American militaries to support their Keystone Cop interdiction efforts.
