This is widely regarded as the granddaddy of all car chase scenes in motion pictures. There have been several like it, but this one in the movie Bullitt, starring one of my favorite actors, Steve McQueen set the standard.
Do yourself a favor and watch it full-screen.
Here’s a little more on the story behind the filming of the scene.
btw – for those of you who haven’t had the opportunity to drive in San Francisco, some of those hills are very steep. Especially when you’re trying to drive them in a clapped-out 1971 VW bug. ๐

gto #108; From your link: John and his brothers quickly went back to the shop where John demonstrated with an old lever-action Winchester 73 rifle that a block could be propelled across the shop just by the gases coming from the barrel. The next day, Browning took that same rifle and with the help of his brothers, Matt and Ed,… Read more »

Squawk #107;
You are a master at subscript usage.
Bonecrusher #9; The usability seems nice but I’m really looking for something more along the lines of free. Oh, well, I have patience. #11; I first learned of Browning about 5 years ago and asked my father-in-law about him. He sent me a biography on Browning but wanted it bakc rather quick. I didn’t get to read much of it.… Read more »
Japanese TSA spoof.
Funny because it’s so close to the truth!
It looks like the birther movement may have some Democrat allies.
It’ll be good when this is all over. Obama can’t use the birth issue anymore in an attempt to brand his opponents as crazy nutjobs.
Or not?
Perhaps the Dems are just as tired of this as the rest of us.
SD, the safety is behind the trigger and pushed to the left. The bolt release is on the right and above the magazine feed. Given the source this should be a late 50’s or early 60’s gun. Barrel says made in Belgium. Back at a Houston gunshow in the 80’s, I found a police riot Savage version of this gun.… Read more »
Super Dave, there is nothing light about my son’s Auto-5. it kicks. But he does like the gun. When he first got it we went to the Texas City shooting range at the dike. That is a really fun place to shoot. After a few rounds, a guy asked my son to swap guns as he had not seen a… Read more »
Oh and Goat, where is the safety? In front of your finger, you push forward to release or behind the trigger guard and you push it sideways? My Dad grew up “Dirt Poor” and when he got back from WW II he purchased what he thought was the best shotgun made in his time, a Browning Auto 5, paid $147.50,… Read more »
goat Super Dave, my son has an Auto-5 he inherited from a great-grandfather he had the fortune to know. Interesting how the barrel moves with the action. Well, no one did guess it. It was not what one would expect from, well basically a middle-aged hippie. But it was a nice story with a sentimental ending.
#107 Squawkie, firstly, you failed to provide the correct answer to the question (though I suspect you could have guessed it) so no steamer or knives for you. What you mean I did not win the steamed knives AGAIN? Iโm done playing your games. ๐ Secondly, you are not eligible to win such a prize. I recall that Bsue forbids… Read more »
Re my last post, read to the disclaimer at the end which clarifies Browning did not invent the machine gun.
I needed a grin today!
How John Browning came to invent a self re-loading gun. Trying shoot this contraption and not smash one’s fingers must have been interesting. Super Dave, my son has an Auto-5 he inherited from a great-grandfather he had the fortune to know. Interesting how the barrel moves with the action. Re the chase seen. #103. Prime, heavy aged cat? – If the gal was thinking clearly she could have sold that to her local oriental food restaurant and made enough to buy another one.
#103 hamous
Couldn’t she have just gone down to the shelter, picked a cat out at random, taken it home, and applied a generous slathering of Nair?
Lots cheaper than paying whatever exorbitant rates the breeder charged, plus the $300 airfare.
#102 I tried using mint once.
It was hard to roll, didn’t want to stay lit, and tasted awful.
HelloGoodbye Kitty. If she had got a cat with some fur on it instead of an inbred deformed mutant it probably would have lived.
Has anyone used Mint? Is it any good? I have an old version of Quicken that I’m using, and it’s full of old crap. I’m trying to decide if I want to start with a new set of accounts in Quicken or use something like Mint. I worry about security.

The Tattoo Tale: As each daughter turned 16, I consented to belly button piercings. #30 TT So I guess the answer to my question is that at least some Muslim males are NOT repulsed by partially clad women. But these dudes look westernized — they’re wearing jeans and don’t have beards down to the wishbone. I was more wondering about the ossified males in the Middle East… Ya know, the kind whose garb makes… Read more »

The Taliban once again show the depravity that they have come to exemplify. ‘There are people who call it inhuman – but in doing so they insult the Prophet. They want to bring foreign thinking to this country.’ Well, let me join the civilized people of the world in calling it inhuman. Furthermore, anyone who adheres to this ‘religion’, including… Read more »

Yuck! That’s worse than a life long reminder of my ex-wife! I can take her panties off (of me) anytime I like. The same is not true of a tattoo.
re: tat guesses. So far they’ve been logical, but nowhere near correct. While I’m an advocate for drug policy reform, a cannabis leaf is more suitable for a gravatar than a tat.
