Monday Open Comments

Oh, my goodness! I’ve left you all out in the cold again! I was working last night and got up to work out this morning, and totally forgot my duties as hostess…I suppose I thought Hammy or Burner would be here. But then, they ARE the men in the group…
Here, ya’ll, come on in! I’ll make up some sweet tea and move the newspaper off the couch for you.

I think we need to take the PC gloves off and call racism each and every time it occurs.
    Black History month – RACIST!
    NAALCP- RACIST
    Congressional Black Caucus – racist
African American Studies in College – racist
Womens Studies – SEXIST /except when men are “studying” women in the proper sense
    Minority Set Asides – RACIST
    Affirmative Action – RACIST

I long for the time that MLK, Jr. wished for, that a person would be judged by the content of his character and not the color of his skin (or the construction of his/her genetalia).

Oh, I forgot the obligatory “All Hail to and Have a Happy MLK Day!”

Don’t get me wrong, he was a remarkable man. It’s just every time this day rolls around, I have a flashback to a discussion I had with my son’s elementary school principal. I was concerned because my young boy could come home and tell me every detail of MLK’s life, yet could not tell me word one about George Washington. It was like MLK and Black History month six month’s out of the year. When I confronted the principal, I flat out told him that “If he wanted to run a black school, fine, but he needed to be honest with the parents about the curriculum”. He, in turn, later asked if I was racist. I simple said that black history and black leaders should be taught alongside – no in lieu of – other leaders in our history.

He compromised where every month the students studied a different cultural history, such as American Indian, etc.

I taught my son about George Washington myself.

    From yesterday:

“Certainly,” the Chinese man said, “but on one condition. If you so much as lay a finger on my daughter, I will inflict upon you the three worst Chinese tortures known to man.”

That reminded me of when I was a young, hard charging, hard loving Marine.
I met a lovely young thing in the bar and wound up at her apartment. We were rolling around under the covers when the front door slammed HARD. “My God, it’s my husband, you got to get out of here.”
I threw my clothes out the window and was in halfway out the window in a headfirst dive after them when he grabbed me by the testicles. I was in intense pain and wondering what he planned on doing. I passed out when I heard his teeth clicking on his pocketknife blade.

We’re a month late on the rent and he wants to explain that it’s the fault of Sarah Palin and talk radio.

I musta been half out of it this morning when they were on KSEV. I could have sworn that Sam was calling them the “Christmas Addicts” Tea Party group. I thought that was a rather odd name, and even odder that they were going to focus in SJL’s district to start with.

Mike Pence of Indiana gave an eloquent and thoughtful speech at Hillsdale College in September and people are still talking about it.

The powers of the presidency are extraordinary and necessarily great, and great presidents treat them sparingly. For example, it is not the president’s job to manipulate the nation’s youth for the sake of his agenda or his party. They are a potent political force when massed by the social network to which they are permanently attached. But if the president has their true interests at heart he will neither flatter them nor let them adore him, for in flattery is condescension and in adoration is direction, and youth is neither seasoned nor tested enough to direct a nation. Nor should it be the president’s business to presume to direct them. It is difficult enough to do right by one’s own children. No one can be the father of a whole continent’s youth.

Is the president, therefore, expected to turn away from this and other easy advantage? Yes. Like Harry Truman, who went to bed before the result on election night, he must know when to withdraw, to hold back, and to forgo attention, publicity, or advantage.

There is no finer, more moving, or more profound understanding of the nature of the presidency and the command of humility placed upon it than that expressed by President Coolidge. He, like Lincoln, lost a child while he was president, a son of sixteen. “The day I became president,” Coolidge wrote, “he had just started to work in a tobacco field. When one of his fellow laborers said to him, ‘If my father was president I would not work in a tobacco field,’ Calvin replied, ‘If my father were your father you would.’” His admiration for the boy was obvious.

Former Kansas congressman Jim Ryun has begun organizing a draft Pence for president organization. We could certainly do worse.

It looks like with our new RNC Chair Preibus, things will NOT BE BUSINESS AS USUAL.

Outstanding. One of the reasons for dismissal:

Tampa has been selected to host the GOP’s 2012 convention, but there was grumbling from committee members about the cost of the selection and planning process. It reportedly cost 18 times what had been spent in previous years.

18 times the cost of previous years?? I am stammering and spewing venom at the very thought of it; do the R insiders have no (*&^*&^(*&(&ing clue about fiscal responsibility, is this why there is so much crapola in the national budget? Food for thought:
IN AFRICA, during the early slave trading days (it still goes on today) one tribe would conquer another and sell those it chose not to kill or use for themselves into slavery. If the slave trade did not exist at that time, those that otherwise would have been sold would have been killed as they would have been unwanted surplus. All those poverty pimping race hustlers actually owe their very existence to the slave trade as those who claim slaves as ancestors would not have had those ancestors in existence in the first place and they would not be here at all.

#27 WB, that was a good read, and balanced. It’s not often that I see a correct account of how and why the War on a Plant really got started.

The modern debate over the decriminalization of drugs in the United States can be traced to the spring of 1972. That March, a commission appointed by President Nixon to review America’s drug policy and led by former Pennsylvania governor Richard P. Shafer made a shocking recommendation: Marijuana should be decriminalized. Simple possession, Shafer’s commission recommended, should no longer be an offense and the “casual distribution” of small amounts of pot for no, or little, remuneration should be decriminalized as well.

Nixon was livid. Even before the report was published, the president vowed not to loosen penalties for pot possession.

Many have theorized, and the Nixon tapes now confirm that he trashed the report because he wanted a means to arrest war protesters who were critical of him–Many of whom were hippies and stoners.

But forty years and a Trillion bucks later, that has changed. Many of the 60s stoners cut their hair and got real jobs, paid taxes, raised families, and (shock) didn’t “gateway” to hard drugs.

    From Wagon’s Boston Globe link:

But the numbers aren’t all positive. According to the latest report by the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction, the number of Portuguese aged 15 to 64 who have ever tried illegal drugs has climbed from 7.8 percent in 2001 to 12 percent in 2007. The percentage of people who have tried cannabis, cocaine, heroin, amphetamines, ecstasy, and LSD all increased in that time frame. Cannabis use, according to the drug report, has gone up from 7.6 to 11.7 percent. Heroin use jumped from 0.7 to 1.1 percent, and cocaine use nearly doubled — from 0.9 to 1.9 percent.

No connection between increase cannabis use and hard drugs? Did the increase in hard drugs occur because people decided to just go ahead and use them? I cannot tell for sure according to the stats published here but a connection seems very plausible.

Many of the 60s stoners cut their hair and got real jobs, paid taxes, raised families, and (shock) didn’t “gateway” to hard drugs.

The same cannot be said of all of them. Tell me, what was your experience between the chain of events betwen smoking cannabis and then subsequentially moving on to try harder drugs among peple you personally knew?

#27 It’s an interesting read but one should be hesitant about projecting Portugal’s experience with decriminalization onto the US.

Portugal has a population of 11 million. The US has a population of 309 million. Portugal has a border with Spain, not a real hotbed of drug syndicates or producers. The US has a 2000 mile border with Mexico, one the most corrupt governments in the Western hemisphere, where drug syndicates virtually control the country. In addition, every other drug-producing country in Central and South America are at our doorstep.

Given our ever-growing inability to accept personal responsibility in this country, the money we would end up spending on treatment and rehab costs alone would make the evil WoD look like the funding for a branch of the Robert KKK Byrd Memorial Library in Harper’s Ferry.

Well Daughter is working in Her Clear Lake store today so She stopped by for dinner, Her and Her Mom had Chick-Filet, I had leftover Kung Pao Chicken from our Soiree @ PF Changs in Sugarland last night. That said; I highly recommend this place, we had Crispy Green Beans, Lettuce Wraps and Calamari tossed with Scallions for appetizers’. For the meal we had a big bowl of Egg Drop Soup and Fried Rice along with our initial entrées, the Kids got everything from chicken, pork, beef, shrimp and duck. All were outstanding and we finished off with dessert consisting of, Banana Spring Rolls, New York-Style Cheesecake and something called Flourless Chocolate Dome all were served with fresh berries and raspberry sauce. Last but not least, fresh coffee. YUM-YUM!! I hurt myself! Since it was Daughter’s birthday She made the mistake of getting two Mai Tai’s, She got a little giggly before we left, not to worry Hubby (two beers) was driving Her home. The best thing was that all 7 of us were able to get together we all had a great time….Yes Life is Good!
BTW; The Kung Pao Chicken was a lot hotter this morning than it was last night. 😉

Staying in Brevard County but up the road apiece from Eau Gallie, we have Dennis Chamberland planning to live out his Lloyd Bridges fantasy and set up housekeeping 200 ft underwater in the Gulf Stream:

oday, the Chamberlands live under the sunny, blue skies of west Cocoa. Soon, they hope to gaze up through aqua-gray tints of Atlantica, the world’s first permanent undersea colony.

They’re determined to do so by 2015, somewhere off East Central Florida, maybe even Brevard County. They’ve signed up 13 others to live with them in cylindrical steel modules, 200 feet down and tapping into the Gulf Stream for energy, oxygen and scientific discovery.

The Chamberlands envision quarters safe enough for children. Even their cat, Snickers, will go with them, transported in a submarine-like cylinder with a glass bubble port.

The 59-year-old is quick to point out that NASA isn’t involved in his project, dubbed the Atlantica Expeditions. But for Chamberland, pioneering the first undersea colony would fulfill a lifelong crusade — what he describes as the inborn “splinter” in his mind.

Maybe there’s something to this “crazy Floridian” thing Wagonburner keeps pushing. Ah wait…

The seeds of Dennis Chamberland’s boyhood obsession — his “splinter” — germinated about as far as away from the ocean as American child can grow up, on the great plains of Haskell, Okla., a town of 1,800 just south of Tulsa. The local library provided the only outlet for his yearning for ocean adventure.

He’d spend countless hours in his tree house, watching morning rays pierce the leaves, relishing the sanctuary and separation from the ground.

I wonder if there were unicorns up there? ¿Quien es mas Macho? ¿Lloyd Bridges o Dennis Chamberland?

A “superstorm” could hit California. 125mph winds. Inundation of 1/4 of the state’s homes. It even sounds Biblical:

The scientists built a model that showed a storm could last for more than 40 days and dump 10 feet of water on the state. The storm would be goaded on by an “atmospheric river” that would move water “at the same rate as 50 Mississippis discharging water into the Gulf of Mexico,” according to the AP. Winds could reach 125 miles per hour, and landslides could compound the damage, the report notes.

#34 Darren, you and I will never agree on this.

For the benefit of other readers, I’ll not again climb the entire mountain of evidence that flies in the face of your undying, irrational, and illogical support of drug policies that waste money, are ineffective, expensive, violent, and cause demonstrably more harm than good. I’ll speak only to the points you raised earlier today.

Did the increase in hard drugs occur because people decided to just go ahead and use them? I cannot tell for sure according to the stats published here but a connection seems very plausible.

In light of all the facts, it is less plausible and less likely than you seem to want to think. The number of people who admit to cannabis usage is bound to increase when criminal prohibition of such use is no longer a threat. No surprises there.

Tell me, what was your experience between the chain of events betwen smoking cannabis and then subsequentially moving on to try harder drugs among peple you personally knew?

I usually avoid anecdotals, but since I’m a nice guy, and since you asked nicely, I’ll answer. Among the people I’ve known since, and those I’ve kept up with from my college/radio/music days, a very small fraction who consume or have consumed cannabis in the past “gatewayed” to more dangerous or addictive substances. I can count them on the fingers of only one hand, and the total is several hundreds. My experiences correlate closely with the national stats on the gateway issue. A very large number of people have used cannabis, a very small number have become addicted to truly dangerous and highly addictive substances.

This statement betrays the overall weakness of your argument: “The same cannot be said of all of them.” The same was true of our failed attempt alcohol prohibition. Those who proposed it were seeking a 100% effective solution of government authoritah and power, yet they failed miserably.

Recently, I posed a question and you answered it. Thanks. The question was something like, “if someone you loved was dying, and thought cannabis might help, would you support their decision, or assist them?” I recall you responded in the negative, and that’s fine with me. That is a personal decision on your part, and I will not criticize it.

But when vocal War on a Plant proponents like you want to excessively empower our government, take my>i> money, use it to commit violent and demonstrably counterproductive acts, after 40 years of abject failure at doing so, I draw the line.

You are wrong. What your doing is wrong. I has not worked and it will not work, no matter how much of everyones money you want to spend on it.

I’ve stated my detailed case for a more rational cannabis policy to you many times, perhaps too often. This is your War on a Plant, Darren. I hold you and more so, the self interested professional authoritarian politicians that exploit your and others cognitive dissonance regarding the matter for their own gain, fully responsible for the damages caused by forty years of failure.

On a needed lighter note (not higher, just lighter) I don’t know why daughter and I didn’t think of this sooner, but there’s this complex piano piece that we both like to play. A couple of days ago, we simultaneously stumbled upon the idea of playing it four handed, one pair on the Baldwin, and another on the Rhodes.

It worked. And we knew it would mid-way through the first try at it. It’ll be a while before we finish re-arranging it to be less than full unison throughout, and a little longer before I figure out how to record us, but when both happen, we’ll share it online.

In the mean time, getting there is most enjoyable. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I seriously need to practice.

Wow, bob you’re not very nice responding to a nicely asked question.

I simply pointed more reported usage of cannabis, made a possible connection to mary jane and harder drugs ad you reciprocate by declaring yourself a nice guy, express gratidude for me framing my question to you “nicely” can then try to pound my into the sand because you do not like my socially political views on drugs. Due to the nature of your response I’m gonna respond a bit. Even if it’s rhetorical (meaning I don’t expect you to respond to my responses), I need to make the comments open.

    (1) Whatever is authoritarian by wanting to make drug posession a state issue beats me. Then again you’re the one who supports judges making a state issue into a federal issue.

    (2) If you think 40 years of a drug war has cost the nation “a trillion dollars” (note that I’m not disputing that claim) then if you want to venture to guess how much money it’ll cost the state (your money) to treat drug users, please let me know. You know, for the benefit of the readers and all.

    (3) Was Portugal’s guerra contra uma planta based on possession or use? Because here in the states there’s nothing illegal in using marijuana, only possessing it.

They decided to decriminalize the possession of all illicit drugs — from marijuana to heroin — but continue to impose criminal sanctions on distribution and trafficking.

Sounds like it’s the possession that’s illegal in Portugal, not usage. Therefore, why would people NOT admit to using drugs before the Portuguese decriminalization of drugs?

    (4) Which brings me to ask, “where did I cite “admitted” usage?” I believe that stats declared that more people **used** drugs post decriminalization. I do not recall any specificality on **admitance** of drugs use, just usage. Now, if for whatever reason you conclude this means that more people are admitting to drug use after decriminalization (there is a strong connotation that such is the case with prisioners), than it only stands to reason that you should explain my curiosity/inquiry expressed in my #3.

    (5) You declare that you don’t use antedoctal stories and yet you admit that you asked “if someone you loved…” That’s funny. Not, like, “hey bob that was clever” but funny in that you provide evidence that says the exact contrary to your self-delcaration. (Note, this caused Hamous to choke, probably on a bong, so I hope you’re proud of yourself, young man).

    (6) ” fully responsible for the damages caused by forty years of failure.” Hmmm, instead of using that sae reasoning against you , I’ll just let THIS stand and let you decide who’s responsible for what. I luvs ya despite the fact that you’re such a jerk at times.

I do thank you for your reply and my experience is the same though I would not declare it a “very few” of the potheads I knew who went on to try harder drugs. Yes, a minority but it doesn’t take near a majority of people to try harder drugs to cause big social problems, including having to spend my money and your money to deal with those problems. My point of contention is that had they not tried pot the likelyhood of them trying cocaine and LSD would be far less. But nothing’s guaranteed in this world.

My point of contention is that had they not tried pot the likelyhood of them trying cocaine and LSD would be far less. But nothing’s guaranteed in this world.

To be clear, I didn’t mean to imply that I didn’t get a little chuckle out of it. I did, but find it tasteless nonetheless.

Nobody ever said that even though people should judge each other by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin, that their skin should not be silky smooth and free of dry flakes.
